POINTERS FOR PARTIES

Food is an integral part of any special event, party or impromptu get-together. Ensuring the food is handled and served in a safe manner is the key to keeping guests from getting ill.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that more than 200 known diseases are transmitted through food. Physical reactions can range from mild gastroenteritis to life-threatening neurologic, hepatic and renal syndromes. Food-related diseases often send people to the hospital, but these conditions are largely preventable.

Hosts and hostesses do not aspire to send guests home with a case of stomach troubles. Practicing food safety and knowing the guidelines to keeping food safe to eat should be on any party host’s todo list. Here are some pointers to consider. • Keep clean. Always wash hands before handling any food. Hands are the easiest way to contaminate foods, especially raw items that will not be cooked and have the opportunity to destroy bacteria.

• Use a clean spoon. If you will be testing the seasoning or flavor of something cooking, always use a clean spoon or fork to do so. Double-dipping is not adviseable. • Designate servers. Have someone serve the food to minimize the number of hands in the food. It also helps ensure portion control so you don’t run out of food. • Use small platters. Use small platters to serve food. This way you can replace small platters instead of refilling large ones that may have old food sitting on them. When keeping track of buffet foods, don’t top off half-filled trays with more food. Replace the tray with fresh food.

• Watch out for bugs. It can be difficult to control the conditions at outdoor parties. Heat and weather can wreak havoc when serving food. Another concern are insects. Flies carry contaminants, and if they land on food, they can ruin the meal. Keep foods covered whenever possible.

• Keep an eye on food. Don’t leave food unattended at room temperature for more than 2 hours. This includes dips, cheeses, luncheon meats, and anything else that may spoil. If it’s been out for a while, throw it in the trash.

• Designate cutting boards. Separate utensils and cutting boards should be used for meat and poultry and fruits and vegetables. This way bacteria from animal products will not contaminate other items. • Be cautious of allergies. Another way guests can become sick from food at a party is if they unintentionally eat something to which they are allergic. If you suspect any items would be troublesome (nuts, eggs, coconut, etc.) post the ingredients of the dish. A party should be an enjoyable event. Ensuring guests enjoy the food and don’t become ill afterward requires practicing proper food safety.

• Keep temperatures consistent. Hot foods should be kept at 140 F and above, while cold foods should be kept at 40 F and below. If foods will be served buffet-style, cold foods need to be served on ice. Hot foods can be kept warm in chafing dishes over sternos. If guests are running late, keep hot dishes on low in the oven so they don’t dry out but remain warm.

• Wash produce thoroughly. To remove dirt, foodgrade waxes, pesticides, and other contaminants, always wash produce before eating, even if it says it has been previously washed.

DID YOU KNOW? Celiac disease is a condition that damages the lining of

the small intestine, preventing it from absorbing parts of food. When a person has Celiac disease, his or her immune system attacks the villi, or areas along the lining of the small intestine, whenever foods that contain gluten are eaten. The damage that results from such an attack makes it hard for the body to properly absorb nutrients, causing many people to become malnourished regardless of how much food is consumed. Found in foods such as bread and pasta, gluten is a protein that can be avoided if people adopt a gluten-free diet. Such a diet means avoiding foods, beverages and even medications that contain wheat, barley, rye, and possibly even oats. While a gluten-free diet wonʼt cure Celiac disease, it can cause the symptoms to disappear and help the villi heal. Celiac disease is often mistaken for irritable bowel syndrome, so if such a condition has been diagnosed but nothing seems to be working, men and women should request they be tested for Celiac disease.

How to encourage kids to be more physically active Kids who embrace physical activity from a young age are less likely to be overweight or obese as adults.

When today’s parents reflect on their childhood, many likely recall seemingly endless days spent playing outdoors. But when today’s kids become tomorrow’s parents, chances are their recollections won’t recall nearly as much time spent idling the days away under the sun. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 17 percent of American children and adolescents between the ages of two and 19 are obese. In Canada, where self-reporting data collection methods have made such statistics more difficult to quantify, the prevalence of overweight and obese children is also on the rise, according to the Canadian

Community Health Survey. The rise in overweight or obese children is likely a byproduct of several factors, not the least of which is that many of today’s kids prefer to play a video game on the couch instead of going outdoors and being physically active. The potential ramifications of youngsters choosing a more sedentary lifestyle are dangerous, as it increases their risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, respiratory ailments and joint problems, among other things. What’s more, numerous studies have found that obese or overweight children are more likely to become obese or overweight adults, which highlights the

importance of embracing a physically active lifestyle as a youngster. Parents know it’s not always easy to get kids to be more physically active. But the following are a few tips parents might find useful when encouraging their kids to embrace a more active lifestyle. Give toys that encourage physical activity. Kids love toys, and their toys will often dictate how they spend their days. Instead of buying the latest video game console, give kids toys that encourage them to be active. This can include balls, bicycles, jump ropes, or even a backyard swingset. Kids who embrace these activities at a young age are more likely to continue doing so into adolescence and adulthood.

Reduce time spent in front of the television. Parents who can effectively minimize the amount of time their child spends in front of the television, whether reducing their time spent watching television or playing video games, will likely be more successful at instilling a love of physical activity as well. To further reduce kids’ time watching TV, don’t allow televisions in their bedrooms, as that will only make it harder to monitor just how much time kids are spending in front of their TVs. Remember that physical activity should be fun. Not all kids are athletic, and some will likely bemoan participating in recreational sports leagues. But that doesn’t mean parents should give up on encouraging physical activity. Instead, find a physical activity that your child finds fun and encourage his or her participation. This might be non-tradi

tional kids’ sports like cycling or jogging or activities like dancing, hiking or even bird watching. Once a child exhibits a healthy interest in a physical activity that you have deemed safe, encourage it. Set a positive example. Kids, especially younger children, look up to their parents and often try to emulate what Mom and Dad are doing. Parents can make the most of that adoration by setting a positive example and being physically active themselves. Go for a nightly bike ride or a walk around the neighborhood with your youngsters in tow. Or put that elliptical machine in the basement to good use. Whatever physical activity you choose, you can bet your children will express an interest in it as well, and that’s a great way to make them more enthusiastic about having a healthy and active lifestyle.

Feel like cheating? Forget what the inside of your home looks like for just a bit and focus on your home’s exterior.

KEEP YOUR HOME EXTERIOR IN TOP SHAPE

“The exterior of your home makes a lasting and daily impression on your friends and family, along with your neighbors,” says Mark Clement, professional contractor and host of MyFixItUpLife home improvement radio show. “While the weather is good, my advice is to get outside and fix up problem areas, work on the landscaping and invest in products that make your home’s exterior not only look great, but work great.”

Clement, who is in the middle of an ongoing renovation of his 100-year-old home, recommends assessing your needs and then diving in on projects. “On the exterior of the home there are three big, critical areas I recommend people evaluate every year — the roof, the windows and the entry door. Those are key areas because, along with being visual focal points of the home, they help protect a house from severe weather. And, if you have problems with older windows, doors or roofing tiles, you’re looking at higher energy bills and growing problems that can affect your wallet long-term.”

Contractor Mark Clement installs polymer roof tiles on his home.

CLEMENT OFFERS THESE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME EXTERIOR IN TOP SHAPE

ROOFING TIPS

1. Check your roof yearly (from a ladder or from a neighbor’s home with binoculars) to determine the condition of your roof. Look for problem areas, such as missing or broken shingles, along with roofing tiles that may be “flapping” in the wind. These are all indications that a new roof may be in your future.

2. Don’t forget to check the sides of your roof. The southern exposure weathers significantly faster than the other sides of the roof, so make sure to carefully examine this one. Also, shallower pitches weather faster than steeper pitches. So again, if your roof has a shallow pitch — like a shed dormer — make certain you can clearly see it to get a true indication of the condition of your roof.

3. If you’re in the market for a new roof, investigate polymer roofing tiles as a good option. These impact-resistant slate and shake tiles are man-made in a wide variety of colors. Some tiles have a 50-year limited warranty and are ideal for all types of weather conditions.

4. Since the installation of a new roof exceeds the capabilities of most homeowners, make sure to research and hire a professional roofer. Check to make sure your roofer is insured, licensed and certified. Ask for a written job estimate and references along with warranty information for both the roof you select and his installation services.

ENTRY DOOR TIPS

1. If you can see light around your main entry door from the inside, the door is hard to close or lock, or the door itself is warped, it’s time to consider a new door.

2. Even if you can’t see light, air may be moving through gaps in the weather stripping at a surprising rate. On a very cold or hot day, hold the back of your hand an inch or so away from the bottom and perimeter of your door. If you can feel air moving or a significant cold spot, that’s a signal your existing door could benefit from better sealing.

3. Determine what role you would like an entry door to play on your home’s exterior. Do you want it to be a focal point with a splash of color? Is it important that you have decorative glass in the door system? Will you need vented sidelites to allow more light and air into your home? Search the web for online tools to help visualize how a new door will look on your home.

4. Think about the weather conditions your home’s door faces along with your energy bills. If either run to the extreme, consider replacing your entryway with a highperformance fiberglass door (which has four times more insulation than wood doors). You can also request features such as enhanced weatherstripping, corner seal pad, door bottom sweep and profiled sill that all work together to provide strength and stability in your entry door.

WINDOW TIPS

1. Evaluate the functionality and decorative appeal of your current windows. If you have condensation between glass panes, the windows are hard to open or close, your energy bills are soaring or if there are drafts coming in around the window units, then it’s time to seriously consider replacement windows.

2. Vinyl framed windows are the category of windows with the highest growth rate in the country. Why? These frames are extremely energyefficient and some of the best have fusion-welded corners and multichambered construction. Plus, maintenance hassles are so low you’ll forget the horrors of rotting frames, scraping and repainting that come with wood windows. 3. Investigate your window options and stick with a national manufacturer that can stand behind a long-term warranty.

4. Remember that a thermally-efficient window is sealed tightest when it’s locked. So, to keep your energy bills lower, don’t just close your windows, make sure to lock them.

TRIM TIPS

1. If you have the opportunity to replace your entry door or windows, make sure to finish off the job with stylish window and door trim. Lightweight and easy to install, weather-resistant synthetic mouldings, shutters and entryway surrounds are are a definite do-ityourself project for any homeowner.

2. Take an eagle’s eye look at your home. Most houses have louvers placed high above the attic or garage space to allow ventilation in those areas. And, most houses have wooden louvers that can rot with time. Replacing louvers with insect-resistant and rot-resistant synthetic louvers can improve the home’s appearance and functionality.

3. Wrap it up. Clement recommends that if you have unsightly porch posts you can easily transform them into showpiece parts of your home by using column wrap kits. The decorative synthetic pieces can be installed in less than 15 minutes around existing structural posts and columns to give an upgraded look to any home.

Things to consider when budgeting your home improvement project

Study close to home where you’ll experience small class sizes and an enriched learning environment.

Before beginning a home improvement project, homeowners should construct a budget to ensure the project is a success.

Home improvement projects have become de rigueur for today’s homeowners. Be it a kitchen remodel or the ever popular man cave project, home improvement projects remain a goal for many homeowners. As enticing as a home improvement project might be, no project can be successful until a budget has been established. The right budget will keep homeowners from going deep into debt when improving their homes, ensuring that, upon the project’s completion, they can fully enjoy their revamped castles without the specter of significant debt hanging ominously over their heads. Before beginning a home improvement project, homeowners can take the following things into consideration. • Personal finances It sounds simple, but homeowners must examine their finances before starting a home improvement project. Just because a bank will loan out money for a project doesn’t mean the project is affordable. Homeowners should compare their monthly expenses with their incomes, and then determine what’s left that might be able to go toward a project. Monthly expenses include everything from groceries to mortgage payments. When the comparison between monthly expenses and monthly income has been made, homeowners can get a grasp of just what they can and cannot afford. • Credit score Many homeowners finance home improvement projects with loans from the bank. Particularly in the current economy when banks are being forced to tighten lending requirements, securing such loans isn’t easy. Homeowners with significant credit card

X Arts & Science, Business, Education, Social Work, and more. X Full-time, Part-time and Continuing Education programs.

debt should eliminate such debt before beginning a project. Doing so serves multiple purposes. First and foremost, eliminating outstanding debt will free up more money to allocate toward the project. Eliminating debt will also make loan applicants more attractive to prospective creditors, increasing their chances of securing a loan and a lower interest rate.

• The project’s priority Budgeting a home improvement project also involves being honest as to just how necessary the project is. For example, a man cave might be a dream project, but should it be a priority over other things around the house? If wear and tear is taking its toll on the roof, for instance, the money going toward the man cave should probably be allocated to replacing the roof instead. If a project is low on the priority list but high on the want list, reexamine those projects higher up on the priority list to determine if they are more deserving of immediate attention and funds than vanity projects.

• Overrun costs Not every home improvement project will come in at or under budget. Many, in fact, go over budget due to a host of factors. Homeowners should not be caught off guard when a project goes over budget. Instead, plan for the project to go over budget and expect such frustration. Allocate extra money in the original budget for overrun costs. This will reduce stress and frustration, and if the project comes in under budget, then there’s extra money when the project is completed.

DANCE

hidden language of the soul

Dance is one of the purest forms of expression. It is the hidden language of the soul. We dance for art, for celebration, for cultural tradition, and for healing. Maya Angelou once said “Everything in the Universe has rhythm. Everything dances.” The heart beat is the internal rhythm that drives us all. This means everyone has the ability to dance as everyone carries this rhythm within. “In large group dances, something exceptional often occurs. When enough people move together with a common pulse and a common purpose, a profound force can take over. People stop moving as individuals and begin to move as if they were parts of a larger body, a group shift.” (planetary dance.org) The healing effects that dance offers is immeasurable. The combination of movement, with intention, and connection to our internal rhythm helps ground your energy, and create release on every level of your being. We constantly dance through life whether conscious of it or not. Bobbing, weaving, leaping and rolling through our daily routines and activities, some of our movements are smooth and effortless. Others feel

static or disjointed depending on the mental or emotional challenges one comes up against. Each dance will look different to each as only we can dance our own dance. Maybe your dance is a way to avoid a method of release, a bold movement forward, or a leap of faith into the unknown. Whatever you choose remember to embrace the opportunity to dance with an open and daring heart as “life is the dancer and we ARE the dance.” (Eckhart Tolle) Beth McKean www.balancedbodystudio.ca

When making a meal, be it an intimate dinner for two or the main course for a dinner party, the entrée often gets the bulk of the attention. But as any cook knows, the side dishes can make just as big an impression as the main course.

Few side dishes are as versatile and beloved as mashed potatoes. When making your next feast, consider the following recipe for “Irresistible Basil Mashed Potatoes” from Marlena Spielerʼs “Yummy Potatoes” (Chronicle Books).

Irresistible Basil Mashed Potatoes Serves 4 to 6

2 pounds floury, baking-type potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks Salt

2 to 3 cups fresh basil leaves of any type (2 to 3 ounces — a nice big bunch)

A tasty take on a beloved side dish

T

2 cups heavy (whipping) cream or half-and-half

4 tablespoons butter Black pepper

2. Meanwhile, blanch the basil. Plunge it into a saucepan of boiling water, cook a moment or two until the leaves wilt and slightly change color and lift out of the pot using a slotted spoon, then plunge into a bowl of ice water. Leave for about five minutes or until it turns brightly colored, then lift from the ice water.

3. Heat the cream in a saucepan until bubbles form around the edge of the pan.

4. Squeeze the basil in your hands gently to rid it of excess water from cooking. Place in a food processor and whirl to purée. Slowly pour the hot cream into this puréed basil and whirl until it forms a fragrant, pale green cream.

5. Coarsely mash the potatoes with a masher, then add the basil cream and mash it in; work in the butter, and season to taste with salt and pepper. If youʼre serving duck or lamb, serve the potatoes with a drizzle of the port reduction around the edge.

Settling For Poor Customer Service!

he pharmacy landscape has changed in Ontario. The government significantly reduced funding for us last year. Some pharmacies, as a result, reduced expenses by reducing staff and services. This has resulted in longer wait times, poor customer service and possible prescription errors. We feel that you should not have to wait for hours for a medication that you need now! At Laclie Pharmacy, we have invested in your health and safety. We have two pharmacists on duty most weekdays and ample staff to ensure that your prescriptions are filled in a timely and efficient manner. A real person answers the phone and we are open 7 days per week. Our focus is on YOU not cosmetics, groceries or appliances!

1. Place the potatoes in a saucepan and fill with water to cover. Add a big pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook, covered, for about 10 minutes, or until the potatoes are just tender. Drain, return to the heat and shake for a few minutes to dry them out; turn off the heat, cover the pan and keep warm.

The Steampunk Phenomenon Is Growing

A

bout a year ago, if you asked anyone in Canada about Steampunk, they would have had no idea what you were talking about. If you opened your search engine you would have found very few references to it. Now, it is becoming one of the most popular art forms of expression in the world.

Just what is it?

Take the clothing of the Victorian Age and add all the steam gears of the machine age, including Art Deco. Throw in a side order of Star Trek and you have the makings for the Steampunk era. As early as 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Captain Nemo’s submarine with all of its mechanical drives, pipes and machinery, fit the Steampunk category. Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory had many Art Deco and machine operated gizmos. The movie Wild Wild West with Will Smith is probably one of the most outrageous Steampunk features of our modern day! The clothing of this movement includes formal Victorian dress (or undress) with goth accessories. World War I army fatigues with leather hats and definitely the goggles are a starter in the clothing department, then add brass gears with leather appendages. Many robot-oriented items that an imagineer can come up with are being used, not just in clothing, but in every other category from computers to robotic animals. Machine-age

jewelry has been in vogue for many years and, even more so now, that the miniatures from old clocks and watches are being used. Vehicles from unicycles, motorcycles and even two large buses are being completely “Steampunked.” I've seen complete houses with the interior and exterior covered in the machine age style. Furniture is especially popular. Illustrator art of the 50s, like Vargas, will now have a WW1 theme of accessories and outrageous gears attached to them. Ray guns are now being remanufactured for this look and any other accessories that the artist can dream up. Musical instruments are now being accessorized with total insanity added to them. I have seen great guitars built with everything from chrome and grass snaky accessories to hundreds of buttons, clock gears and bits of machinery. Even music is affected by this. The group Roche has a new album out called Clockwork Angels and their tour is centered around the Steampunk era. Included in this article are a few pieces of my Steampunk art. Before items are relegated to the trash, individuals can think about ways these same items can be reused and reincarnated into several other purposes. Today’s younger generations have grown up in a time when disposable items are de rigueur. But long before disposable items became the norm, men, women and children were forced to make due with items that were long past their expiration dates, even reusing them in new ways. While this practice might have been replaced by the convenience of disposable items, eco-conscious citizens can still embrace this old and environmentally friendly trend.

It may take a short inquiry to the company or the work of a handyman to repair a broken item and set it right again, but such efforts are worth it.

Polish pots. With thorough cooking and oxidation, copper pots and even steel ones can begin to look dingy. Regular old beer can be used as a polishing agent to get them to sparkle. Because of beer’s subtle acidity, it can help boost shine without staining the metal like a higher-acidity liquid would.

Embrace newspapers’ versatility. There are millions of newspapers printed and used worldwide. The average household may have one or more newspapers delivered each week, and newsprint is also used for junk mail and advertisements.

While recycling does help cut down on newspapers, there are other ways to put old papers to good use. Line the bottom of refrigerator drawers with the paper to catch spills and eliminate odors. Use shredded paper as kitty litter or in bird cages. Wrap unripe fruit in newsprint to help it ripen faster. You can also place newspaper at the bottom of a planting bed before you cover it with soil or mulch to keep away weeds.

Give old jeans a new life. It’s hard to part with that favorite pair of jeans sometimes. Whether they’re stained or simply don’t fit anymore, you can turn the denim into something new. Doll clothes are easily crafted from scraps of denim. Or, why not turn pieces of denim into a durable, reusable shopping bag to take to stores? A patchwork quilt made of squares of denim can be used as a picnic blanket or beach throw in a pinch. Jeans can also be donated so the less fortunate can benefit from the clothing.

Swap and share. Before buying anything, find out if others might lend you things that you need. You may not need a specialized power tool for more than a day or so, and borrowing items can allow you to do a test drive of sorts before you actually make a purchase. There are social networking sites that enable people to connect with others to share and swap things they have.

Skin care and hygiene products today are sold on the market and said to be safe but no one really truly knows the truth about what is safe, and what is not. The general public is being exposed to more high-risk neurotoxins and petrochemicals than ever before. The easily recognizable petrochemicals found in these products include: mineral oil, petrolatum, petroleum, artificial dyes and colours as well as artificial fragrances. All kinds of side effects in varying degrees can be expected over a period of time from these chemicals. The most common side effects are fatigue, memory loss, personality changes, sleep disturbances and sexual dysfunction. Even worse many of the same oils that cause these symptoms are also known to cause cancer. Cosmetics are also found to have powerful yet unregulated and untested ingredients. GREAT GIFTS

The dawn of the digital age has made photography more popular than ever before. Amateur photographers can now take photos with a digital camera or even their cellular phones and post their pictures to the Internet in a matter of seconds. Though online photo albums are popular, a traditional photo album is a thoughtful and inexpensive gift for a loved one who can’t take enough pictures. New parents might also consider giving their youngster’s grandparents a photo album filled with photos of the family’s newest addition.

that won’t break the bank

Giving is synonymous with the holiday season. But in a holiday season where people are still dealing with a sagging and unpredictable economy, giving in a way that won’t break the bank is imperative for many thoughtful holiday shoppers. In response to the economy, many families have set limits on how much family members can spend on holiday gifts. Such budgets are a great idea and can even make holiday shopping more fun as shoppers hunt down the perfect gift without having to worry about how they’re going to pay for it. Low-cost holiday gifts come in many shapes and sizes, and the following are a few ideas to help you get started.

Pet Parents

Pet parents are enamored with their furry friends, so a petoriented gift is sure to make their holiday season even more special. A new bowl, a flashy new collar or some additional attire aimed at helping their beloved pooch or cat stay warm through the winter months won’t cost much, but it’s certainly something most pet owners and their pets need. For the pet parent who seemingly has everything, remember that pets can never have enough toys. Pets tend to play rough, so their toys aren’t known for their longevity. Some new pet toys can be had on the cheap, and pet parents will appreciate the gesture.

Food & Beverage

If you need to find an inexpensive gift for the family foodie, then you’re in luck. Plenty of culinary gifts can be had for less than $25. Early risers might appreciate some gourmet coffee beans accompanied by a new coffee mug, while those who prefer tea instead of coffee would no doubt appreciate a variety pack of herbal teas and a new teacup or teapot. Men and women who embrace mealtime as an opportunity to experience various styles of cuisine would likely love a cookbook filled with recipes from all over the world or a particular country whose cuisine inspires them. Another great gift for foodies is a membership to a club such as “Pastry of the Month” or “Coffee of the Month.” Such gifts cost a little more than thrifty shoppers would care to spend, but there are some deals to be had on such memberships come the holiday season.

Film Fans

Movie buffs are passionate about their favorite films, and feeding that passion can be easy and inexpensive. Many film fans have a favorite director or actor, so why not gift a collection of that director or actor’s work? Perhaps thanks to the growing popularity of streaming movies online, DVDs are now more affordable than ever. Many film fanatics are also interested in the history of the film industry, so a book detailing that history might appeal to your loved ones. Of course, all film fans generally appreciate a gift certificate to their local multiplex.

Rest & Relaxation

Arguably one of the best holiday gifts is one that won’t cost shoppers a penny. Offer to babysit a loved one’s kids so the adults can enjoy a worryfree night on the town or simply relax at home without the kids. Another R&R gift is to book a spa trip for you and a loved one. While this won’t necessarily qualify as an inexpensive holiday gift, you can often get great deals on spa treatments and other luxurious services when you book for two. And booking such a trip is also a way to reward yourself for surviving another holiday season.

Gifts

NO SPORTS FAN SHOULD GO WITHOUT

Sports fans enjoy indulging in their love of a particular sport with video games, making a new game an ideal gift for the family sports fan.

Few things make holiday shoppers happier than giving a gift that instantly lights up a loved one’s eyes. All the work that goes into finding and securing the perfect gift becomes worth it and then some when the recipient’s smile stretches from ear to ear. A great holiday gift often involves someone’s favorite hobby. When gifting to the family sports fan, the options are endless. Sports fans tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves, and they’re liable to be just as vocal with appreciation if any of these gifts are waiting under the tree for them this holiday season. Magazine subscription: Many sports fans feel they can never get enough information on their favorite teams and sports. A magazine subscription to Sports Illustrated or another periodical focusing on a particular sport can provide insider access for a year or longer. Magazine subscriptions are typically inexpensive, but they provide lots of bang for your gifting buck, especially weekly publications. In addition, many magazines now give print subscribers access to exclusive content online, playing to your favorite sports fan’s evergrowing desire for more knowledge. Sports apparel: According to IBISWorld, a California-based market research firm, online sporting apparel sales were expected to approach $5 billion in 2012. Driving those sales are sports fans who can’t wait to don the gear of their favorite teams. Apparel makes a great holiday gift, whether it’s an authentic player jersey, a team logo hoodie or a personalized T-shirt that directly connects fans to their teams. Memorabilia: Sports memorabilia can be costly, but shoppers can still find great deals on everything from autographed items to relics of a franchise’s fledgling days. Shoppers without knowledge of the memorabilia industry might want to focus on less expensive items that will be a hit under the tree but won’t be a hit to their bank accounts. Video games: Many sports fans indulge in their love of a favorite sport by playing video games. Like most technology, video games are consistently reinvented, so last year’s game might already be outdated, making video games an ideal holiday gift. Those who want to go the extra mile can include a new gaming console along with the latest video game. Tickets: Of course, sports fans might like nothing more than tickets to see their favorite teams play. Buying directly from a sports team is a safe bet, but it can also be expensive. Savvy shoppers can explore the legal secondary market. When gifting tickets, do so far enough in advance of the game so fans have time to plan their trip and, if need be, take a day off from work.

FOR THE FAMILY Gifts IDEAS GLOBE-TROTTER

The perfect holiday gift isn’t always easy to find. Shoppers may scour the malls looking for ideas or spend countless hours online in the hopes of landing the gift that is sure to make their loved one’s holiday unforgettable. When shopping for the holidays, shoppers often discover that the best gifts are the ones that speak to a person’s passion. A sports fan, for instance, might want nothing more than tickets to watch his favorite team play. When catering to a person’s interests, shoppers should find out what that passion is and then the process of finding the perfect gift becomes a lot easier. Of course, passions can vary. For those with an on-the-go loved one who’s seemingly always planning his or her next globe-trotting adventure, the following gift ideas are sure to please.

The Backpacker

Travelers come in many shapes and sizes. Those who prefer backpacking through the woods instead of jetting off to the nearest island resort may love a new backpack. When shopping, don’t look for backpacks tailor-made for students. Instead, visit your nearest outdoor store and look for a bag that’s sturdy and capable of storing a variety of items needed for camping. Daypacks are smaller and made for campers who frequently take day trips or shorter overnight trips. These packs are lightweight and boast enough room for a small amount of supplies. Medium-duty packs typically provide more storage and support than smaller daypacks. They often feature internal frames and can be used when backpacking through a variety of trails. An expedition pack will be larger and is ideal for campers who need to carry a lot of weight because they tend to go on longer camping or hiking trips.

The Road Tripper

Despite the high cost of fuel, some people still

feel road trips are the best way to travel. Travelers who can’t get enough of the open road would benefit from a gift card to a gas station, which can drastically reduce the cost of their next adventure. When going this route, shoppers should be sure to buy a gift card to a gas station their loved one is bound to encounter on the road. Another thoughtful gift for the family road tripper is a membership to a roadside assistance service like CAA. Such memberships can prove invaluable if or when your loved one’s car breaks down. These prepaid memberships ensure drivers will have access to emergency roadside service, discounts at many hotel chains across the country and even maps and directions to help them plan their next trip. The cost of membership is relatively inexpensive, but it can save travelers substantial amounts of money should a car not prove as reliable as its owner hoped.

The Jetsetter

For those who feel travel is best done in style, one of the often dreaded parts about following their wanderlust is sitting in airports or on airplanes as they anticipate the adventures that await them at their destinations. Such restlessness might be quelled with an e-reader that enables travelers to read books, stream movies and television shows and update their status via social media apps so their friends and family can follow them on their adventures. Some new luggage may also make a jetsetter’s holiday that much better. While a completely new set of luggage might break the bank, consider a nice duffel bag or a small travel bag with room for toiletries and other small items no traveler can do without. Traveling is a passion for many men and women. This holiday season use a loved one’s love of travel to help you find him or her the perfect gift.

MAGNETIC COOKINGGifting POWER item will catch fire when it is too close to the stove. Also, even if a piece of paper were between the pot and the cooking element, heat would only be generated in the pot and not cause the paper to ignite. Should a child touch the heating surface, there would be no risk of burns.

An induction stove kitchens is a relatively new innovation that uses with new magnetic energy to technology induce a current and can be eventually heat food. It works by way of welcome a copper wire that is holiday underneath where you’d place the gifts cooking pot. An alternative electric current then goes through the copper wire, creating a magnetic field. The current flowing through the pot generates the heat in the pot and the pot alone. The food cooks, but the actual heating element of the stove remains cool to the touch. Many home cooks prefer cooking with gas instead of electricity. However, the safety, speed and cooking provided by induction cooking methods may make induction stoves more popular. Fast cooking: Heat is transferred directly within the pan’s metal when using an induction stove. That means that little energy is lost between the pan and the heating element as would be the case with other stoves. Pans heated on an induction stove heat up quickly and can cook meals much faster. Safety: Safety is another consideration with induction cooktops. There is no open flame or hot electric element. This reduces the propensity for burns and there is no chance that an errant towel or other

Environmentally friendly: Because of the concentrated heat delivery, induction stoves waste less energy than their electric and gas counterparts. In addition, they will not heat up the kitchen while cooking, which means homeowners or professional chefs do not have to factor cooling systems into their kitchens to combat excessive heating. Almost no ambient heat is generated through induction cooking. Furthermore, you are using less energy, which means lower electric and gas bills.

Easy clean-up: With heat generated inside of the pan or pot, you will not have to worry about spilled-over food burning and sticking to hot cooking elements. Also, there are no grates or grease traps to contend with while cooking. This means that cleaning up after a meal may only require a damp cloth to clean the cooktop surface.

It is important to note that induction stoves can be three to four times more expensive than gas and electric models. That said, homeowners will recoup some of those costs thanks to lower energy bills. You also will need to purchase ferrous metal pots in order to cook with the stove. Otherwise, a special ferrous disk will have to be placed between a nonferrous metal pot and the induction cooktop in order to generate the heat.

Homeowners looking to give the gift of a kitchen renovation and outfit the room with the latest in appliance technology probably won’t want to pass up on an induction stove. With fast cooking times, improved safety features and the novelty factor of cooking through magnetic energy, these cooktops have quickly become prized possessions.

Consumers can often find great deals

big-ticket items, including on

washing machines, during the holiday season.

Before purchasing a big-ticket item, talk to a merchant about the company’s return policy. Some merchants will offer a full refund if an item is returned within a certain time period, while others may only offer a partial refund. But some merchants might be willing to work with you if you purchase an item only to find it is being sold for less money by another retailer. Some will match the lower price and refund you the difference. • Warranties: When purchasing a big-ticket item, a store representative will likely try to sell you an extended warranty for the item. On the surface, such a precaution seems like a worthy investment because, in theory, it’s offering added protection for an item that’s costing you a lot of money. However, most electronics and appliances already come with a standard manufacturer warranty, and the extended warranty, which can cost several hundred dollars, might just be duplicating coverage you already have.

If you’re leaning toward purchasing an extended warranty, know exactly what it does and does not cover before buying it. Many of today’s appliances are built to last years, and the extended warranty might not cover problems that result from normal wear and tear. Research the product, including consumer reviews, so you know what problems to expect from it. If the problems are minor, then the extended warranty is probably not worth the investment.

• Price: The price of an item is the determining factor for many buyers. If the price is right, consumers will buy an item. If not, they’re likely to move on. But even if the in-store price for a bigticket item seems like a great deal, it’s still in a consumer’s best interest to shop around. Many retailers offer better deals online than they do inside their brick-and-mortar stores, and you might even be able to pick the item up just as you would if you bought it in-store. In-store pickup can save you the cost of shipping, which can amount to considerable savings. Don’t be too quick to purchase a big-ticket item no matter how deep the discount. Be patient and comparison shop. Doing so might save you hundreds of dollars.

• Reputation: Agood deal is only a good deal if you’re getting an item that’s worth buying. Do your homework before buying a bigticket item, researching its pros and cons. Consumer reviews can be an especially valuable resource, as consumers like you have no incentive to embellish or mislead others about a product. The product’s reputation among industry professionals and fellow consumers should bear considerable weight in your decisionmaking process.Aheavily discounted piece of junk is still a piece of junk.

The holiday season is a great time to find bargains on big-ticket items. Educated consumers can come away with a great deal and a great product.

Holiday traditions are fun. This year it may be time to begin some new ones to add even more enjoyment. Much of what makes the holiday season so special is the traditions that people hold dear. While families have traditions that stretch back decades, there is plenty of opportunity to embrace new means of celebration to breathe new life into Christmas, Chanukkah or the seasonʼs other holidays. Chances are youʼre already hanging stockings or going caroling this year. You can add some of these and modify as they fit for your family. 1. Feed the wildlife. During the cold days of winter, birds and small animals that donʼt hibernate may find it difficult to forage for food. By trimming an outdoor pine tree in edible snacks youʼll have a beautiful tree and one that benefits the wildlife as well. String peanuts and other nuts for the squir-

rels. Make little ornaments out of suet and string for the birds. Berries and corn can be enjoyed by all. Be sure to choose a tree that is far enough away from the home, so you donʼt have too many scavengers hunting and pecking around the house. 2. Create a photo Advent calendar. Make your own Advent calendar that has small doors that open up to photos of different family members. Or use a collection of childrenʼs pictures that showcase how theyʼve changed as theyʼve grown older. 3. “Adopt” a child for holiday gifts. Each year you can bring a smile to a child in need by purchasing a present for an underprivileged kid. Some post offices sponsor “Letters from Santa” events where participants can respond to one of the thousands of letters mailed to The North Pole. Or work with a local charity that organizes events to bring gifts to children in hospitals or in foster care. 4. Holiday story countdown. Every night in December watch a movie or read a story that tells an uplifting holiday tale. Use this as a method of counting down until Christmas. On the night prior, reading “ʻTwas the Night Before Christmas” should suffice. 5. Remember someone who has passed on. The holiday season is one made beautiful by lit candles and twinkling lights. Remember a loved one or a friend who has passed away by lighting a remembrance candle in his or her honor.

Itʼs a way this person can still be part of the festivities. 6. Have a holiday sing-a-long. Sure it may be tradition to go around the neighborhood singing carols, but itʼs just as fun indoors. Have a singing party where guests are given lyrics to popular tunes they can sing around the piano or karaoke machine. 7. Bring some joy to a public servant. Police officers, firefighters, military personnel ... many of these workers do not get off for the holidays. There are a certain number of public servants who must remain on call in the event of an emergency. Treat these people to something enjoyable when they may be missing their own festivities. Cook or cater a meal for a fire house, deliver cookies to the police station or put together care packages for people living on a military base. 8. Banish the holiday blues. When the holidays are set to go for another year, many people find they become a little down. After all, a home that was once filled with merry trinkets may now go back to the bare essentials. Create a tradition where everyone in the family receives one more gift — a personalized ornament that can be packed away for use next year — thatʼs given in January before the decorations are packed away. Itʼs another opportunity to open a present, and it symbolizes looking forward to the joy of next year.

What to do with all those holiday leftovers

With a few creative ideas, anyone can turn leftover holiday foods into new meals.

The food cooked during the holidays is often enough to feed an army. Too often, hosts and hostesses prepare and serve much too much food, only to find themselves left with a refrigerator full of leftovers when guests don’t eat as much as hosts had suspected. In order to avoid wasting food, many people attempt to create new meals from their excess holiday ingredients. Putting leftovers to good use can take a little ingenuity to disguise the reality that you’re eating turkey or ham for the third consecutive night. All it may take is a little inspiration to create delicious meals with repurposed holiday foods. The first thing to keep in mind when using leftovers is food safety.Any food remaining after the holiday meal should be packed into storage containers and refrigerated or frozen no more than 2 hours after the meal has ended. This ensures that bacteria are not able to proliferate in the food and cause foodborne illnesses. Choose shallow containers, which will enable the food to chill more uniformly and not create warmer spots that take longer to reach a safe storage temperature. Do not save any foods that have remained at room temperature for too long or seem questionable, especially dairy products. It is adviseable to discard leftovers (even if refrigerated) after 4 days. Use it or lose it! Now that leftovers are properly stored, you can think up some creative menu ideas for using them in the next few days. • Turn stuffing into croquettes or burgers by mixing chopped turkey with stuffing or adding a new meat to the equation, like sausage. • Dice ham and potatoes and add to the morning helping of eggs for a country-

style omelette. • Promptly boil the turkey carcass to make homemade stock for soups and stews. • Turn leftover mashed potatoes into a creamy potato soup, with the addition of cream, bacon and scallions. • Use cranberry sauce in place of butter on bagels or toast. • Mash up leftover sweet potatoes and bake into a moist and delicious sweet potato loaf bread. • Create open-faced sandwiches for lunch by layering ham or turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy on top of a thick slice of bread. • Diced meats, vegetables and onion can be added to a batter of pancake mix and turned into an easy quiche. • Host Mexican night and use leftover turkey meat to make spicy fajitas, complete with sour cream and salsa. • Use stale bread to make homemade croutons for salad or use in a bread pudding recipe. •Add cranberry sauce to boxed muffin mixes for a tart treat. • Turn leftover holiday meats into anAsian stir-fry with the addition of water chestnuts, bean sprouts, soy sauce, and mixed vegetables. • Grind meats to make a hearty meat loaf. • Make leftover potatoes into hash browns. • Cube leftover cake and serve on skewers and fruit for dipping into chocolate fondue. • Use pie crust and small ramekins to turn turkey or ham into savory pot pies.

There are so many ideas for using leftover holiday foods this season. Experiment with flavors your family will enjoy.

holiday party

Host a merry, memorable The holidays are the most festive time of the year, and no holiday season is complete without a party or two with family and friends. Be it to celebrate a religious holiday or to ring in the New Year, a holiday party is an essential element to the holiday season. While it’s always great to be a guest, hosting a holiday party is a great way to show friends and family how much they mean to you. This holiday season, consider the following tips to ensure your holiday party is as memorable as the season is merry. Make it a themed party. The holiday season is filled with festivities, from office parties to neighborhood gatherings to gatherings with family. For more casual affairs, set your party apart with a theme. For example, a Christmas sweater party, where each guest wears a Christmas sweater, can be a fun way to excite guests and inspire a few laughs. Give a prize to the guest with the most ornate sweater. If sweaters aren’t your thing, then encourage guests to dress up like some favorite holiday characters, including Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman or even Rudolph. Don’t forget the holiday fare. Just like parties are a staple of the holiday season, so, too, are certain foods and types of music. Few people indulge in some eggnog outside of the holiday season, so make sure there’s plenty of eggnog on hand. And don’t forget the gingerbread cookies, either. As people enjoy holiday goodies, make sure they do so with holiday music playing in the background. Choose songs that guests know and to which they can sing along. Such sing-

alongs might become especially memorable once guests have a glass or two of eggnog in them.

Host a holiday giveaway. Though it can be fun to do a Secret Santa, chances are guests already have enough gifts to buy. But hosts can spice things up with a holiday giveaway that rewards guests. Host a holiday-themed round of Trivial Pursuit or a holiday movie trivia game that encourages guests to compete for prizes. Prizes can be small and inexpensive, but guests will be sure to enjoy some friendly competition for holiday-themed prizes.

Don’t be afraid to take it outside. For those who live in regions with significant snowfall, consider inviting guests outside to have some fun in the snow. While fun in the snow is often left to the kids, don’t assume adults won’t enjoy building some snowmen or a good old-fashioned snowball fight in the backyard. If outdoor fun is going to be on the docket, be sure to remind guests to dress appropriately. And make sure there’s plenty of hot chocolate ready once everyone goes back inside to warm up.

Prearrange transportation home for guests. A successful holiday party is one that is safe, so be sure to prearrange travel home for guests just in case anyone overindulges in holiday cheer. When sending out invitations, seek volunteers to be designated drivers, and avoid drinking alcohol yourself. For larger parties, call a local taxi service and arrange for a couple of cabs to be on call when the party ends.

Put some ‘green’

in holiday plans

Using recycled wrapping paper and turning to LED lights on the tree are green ideas for the season. With the holiday season on the horizon, many people’s thoughts turn to charitable giving and other altruistic efforts. Amid giving a helping hand to those who need it and donating to worthy charities, individuals can think about giving back to the planet as well. Many people equate the holiday season with trying to do more or give more. While these efforts are well-intentioned, the “bigger is better” mantra often turns into a season of excess. From thousands of twinkling lights adorning homes to pounds of wrapping paper used on gifts, the toll the holiday season takes on the environment is substantial. The Clean Air Council estimates that an additional 5 million tons of waste is generated during the holidays, and 4 million tons of this is wrapping paper and shopping bags. Incandescent twinkle bulbs consume considerable power, especially when every house in the neighborhood is lit up. Extra food is often purchased to make holiday meals lavish, and plastic or disposable dishes and utensils is commonly chosen for convenience. There are several ways to reduce the impact the holidays have on the environment. Making smart choices and being conscious of when you could be adopting the “bigger is better” philosophy could help. • Switch holiday lights to LEDs that use 80 to 90 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. Plus they are supposed to

last longer before burnout. Although their initial cost is higher than standard bulbs, energy savings and longer lifespan mitigate these initial costs. • Place lights on a timer so that the light display turns off overnight. If you don’t have a timer, simply turn the lights off when going to bed. • Buy items with less packaging to reduce waste. If you plan to purchase the same items as other friends and family (i.e. adhesive tape or tissue paper), think about buying one bulk package and splitting the contents. • Reduce reliance on wrapping paper. Many people now forgo wrapping paper for gift bags because they are easily portable and can be used over and over. If you select wrapping paper, choose types that can be recycled and papers that are already made of recycled materials. You can also use unique materials for wrapping items, such as cloth with ribbon or handkerchiefs. • Trim the tree with handmade items. Stringing popcorn and berries to make a homemade garland is a much greener option than plastic tinsel. • For those who want a real Christmas tree this year, buy one with the root ball intact. Then plant the pine tree in the yard after the holidays are over. • Choose locally grown or organic food for holiday feasts. These foods might be more fresh, and you will know they were raised in a way that doesn’t compromise the environment. • Limit gifts that require batteries. Batteries routinely end up in landfills and damage the environment when they are carelessly discarded. Select toys and gadgets that use rechargeable batteries or ones that can be easily recycled later on. • Reduce reliance on disposable entertaining items. Skip the plastic cups and paper napkins. While it may take a little extra effort to clean up, using china dishes and stainless flatware reduces waste that ends up in the garbage. This holiday season, when the spirit of giving reigns supreme, don’t forget to give back to the planet as well.

Origins of a holiday staple

The thick, spiced drink we know as eggnog has become synonymous with the holidays. It is so linked with the Christmas season that a person may be hard-pressed to find it sold in the supermarket any other time of the year. But eggnog wasn’t always the holiday beverage it has become. Eggnog is believed to have originated in 17th century Europe, primarily as a drink for the elite, since the ingredients in the beverage were hard to come by and thusly relegated to the very rich.

There are different theories on the origins of the word eggnog itself. Some believe it has gotten its name from the Old English word “nog,” which meant “strong beer.” The “egg” refers to one of the ingredients in the beverage, fresh eggs. Others surmise that it comes from the word “noggin,” which was a vessel for serving drinks in taverns. The drink was called “egg in a noggin,” which was shortened to “eggnog.” Still, there are others who say its name is derived from the term “grog,” which was another term for booze. “Egg n’ grog” was eventually abbreviated to “eggnog.”

Although there is little certainty to the origins of the name, the recipe for eggnog has essentially remained unchanged throughout the centuries. It consists of beaten eggs, cream or milk and sugar mixed with some sort of alcoholic spirit. The Old English were believed to mix it with wine, though once the drink was brought to the New World, colonists substituted rum for the wine. Rum was readily available through tradesmen running between the Americas and the Caribbean and therefore less expensive than another spirit. As America grew and eggnog was enjoyed in different parts of the country, the rum was replaced with regional spirits, including bourbon or grain alcohol. Other ingredients were also added to give it a customized flavor. However, the use

of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves has become traditional flavors for the holiday brew.

Although eggnog is widely enjoyed throughout the holiday season, in the past it was served at special events and social occasions. As a warmed beverage it can easily chase away winter’s chill. This is how it may have come to be enjoyed primarily during the holidays. Love it or hate it, eggnog is a drink that can evoke strong feelings of the holidays within minutes. There are variations of eggnog sold commercially, but many people swear by homemade versions for their taste and authenticity. Try your own homemade eggnog with this recipe, courtesy of Cooks.com. Holiday Eggnog (Spirited) 1 dozen eggs 1 pound powdered sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup vanilla 8 cups evaporated milk 3 cups water 1 quart spiced rum Nutmeg, to garnish Beat eggs until light in color. Gradually add sugar, salt and vanilla. Then add milk and water. Stir in rum (brandy, bourbon or rye may also be used). Cover the nog and ripen for 24 hours in the refrigerator. Stir and serve sprinkled with nutmeg.

Some dos and don’ts of holiday travel

The holidays are a festive time of year, but they can also prove stressful for the millions of people who travel to visit friends and family or use time off during the holidays to go on vacation. Because so many people travel during the holidays, airports are crowded more than usual and the nation’s roadways often experience heavy traffic, especially on the days immediately before and after a holiday. While there’s not much travelers can do to reduce the number of fellow travelers come the holiday season, there are certain dos and don’ts that can make holiday travel much easier. DO plan ahead. Leaving holiday travel plans until the last minute is a recipe for disaster. Some air travelers feel it’s more affordable to book flights in the weeks leading up to the holidays rather than months in advance. While it’s possible to find last minute airline deals, it’s very possible such deals will put travelers on standby. Book travel plans as early as possible to avoid the hassles of last minute bookings. DON’T blame airport staff if things go awry. Airline employees, particularly those who work at ticket counters, are too often treated poorly by travelers who need someone to blame for flight delays and cancellations. The same goes for the people who work at bus or train stations. Should travel plans be delayed or cancelled, remain courteous, compassionate and respectful of staff. DO insure your trip. As mentioned above, flight delays and cancellations are common during the holiday season. Heavy snowfall can wreak havoc on travel plans, even for those people who live in relatively temperate climates. Insurance is often inexpensive, and can protect travelers if their flight plans go awry. The peace of mind insurance provides can also reduce the stress of holiday travel.

DON’T try to make up for lost time. While there’s little air travelers can do to make up for lost time, those traveling by automobile often try to make up for lost time by driving aggressively. Nothing could be more dangerous, as the roads are often overcrowded and driving conditions during the holidays are rarely ideal. No matter where you are going, be it a hotel or to a friend or family member’s house, they will understand the situation and they will certainly prefer you get

there safe and sound, even if that means getting there a little later than originally planned. DO be an early bird. If traveling via automobile, get up early and hit the road before most drivers are even out of bed. It might not be fun to get up so early, but you will likely start your trip off with little to no traffic.

DON’T overdo it. Traveling too much can lead to exhaustion, which is especially dangerous for those traveling by automobile. If possible, spread out holiday travel as much as you can, and attempt to spend at least two nights sleeping in the same bed before hitting the road again. Holiday travel doesn’t have to be so difficult. Adhering to a few dos and don’ts can make this year’s holiday travel far less stressful.

REIKI

Reiki (RAY KEE) is a 2500-year-old system of healing. Introduced to the Western world in the mid 1900s, it has been adopted by a number of progressive hospitals and other health care facilities. Reiki is a treatment that works by simple placement of hands and channelling of energy. Reiki does not diagnose nor interfere with medical treatments. It enhances medications, quickens healing time, reduces stress and is effective in pain management. A Reiki treatment often feels like a warm, glowing radiance flowing through and surrounding you. Reiki treats the whole person – body, mind and spirit. Treatment is a simple, natural, and safe method that can work even if you don’t believe in it. Reiki energy flows through the practitioner’s hands into the client who is lying on a massage table fully clothed. Treatments can also be given while the client is seated or even standing. The practitioner places her hands on or near the client’s body, and Reiki, an intelligent energy, flows to the greatest need. The practitioner may be drawn to place his/her hands on several areas of the body. Reiki is easy to learn. In a one-day Reiki Level I class, the student is attuned to the Reiki energy. When you are channelling energy during a treatment, you receive this healing energy at the same time. Reiki does not drain the practitioner. In fact most practitioners feel energized after they give a treatment. Learning more about Reiki and perhaps trying it may be one of the most beneficial things you will do this year. Dale McKay

Mickey Mouse Is One Thing...

Most people love Mickey Mouse. However, none of us want to see mice in our homes. Do you hear scratching noises in your walls at night? This, or signs of chewing or damaged food packaging, may mean that you have an invasion of rodents. Mice are prolific breeders. Ignoring the problem will simply lead to a severe infestation. Mice are attracted to areas where they can find food, water and shelter. They can enter your home through openings the size of a dime. Prevention is the key to controlling rodents. Use steel wool around pipes before caulking, cover vents and soffits with fine mesh metal screening, patch cracks in foundations, use weather stripping around doors and windows, remove clutter in yards, and cut back grass and weeds near the house. Never put fatty food waste, eggs or milk products in your compost. Eliminate water sources such as leaky taps and open drains. Keep the kitchen area clean and store dry food, including pet food, in metal or glass containers. Use caution when near urine or droppings since mice carry disease. Wear rubber gloves and a dust mask during cleanup. Always wear gloves when disposing of dead rodents. Never vacuum or sweep dry droppings. The dust raised can cause illness. Wash your hands thoroughly. If, after following these precautions, you still get mice, your

CORK

not just for floors anymore

ver the last several years, homeowners have increasingly looked for ways to make their homes more environmentally friendly. From more complicated projects such as installing ecofriendly home fixtures to simpler measures like replacing incandescent lightbulbs with compact fluorescent lightbulbs that consume far less energy, the options for eco-conscious homeowners are numerous. Perhaps no eco-friendly home improvement has garnered more attention and acclaim in recent years than cork flooring. Because only the bark of a cork tree is harvested to produce cork flooring, the cork tree can continue to flourish after the product is removed. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency notes that even after cork is initially harvested from a cork oak tree, that tree will likely live another 100-120 years and can continue to be harvested every 9-12 years. What’s more, cork is extracted entirely by hand, without any machinery that might potentially harm the environment. Homeowners who have chosen cork often cite its structure as one of its most appealing qualities. Because it is soft, cork flooring has a cushioning effect that is both comfortable and helps reduce noise around the home. In addition, air cells within the cork help trap heat, meaning cork flooring acts as an insulator that can help homeowners reduce energy consumption while lowering their heating bills along the way. But as beneficial as cork can be around the house, it’s no longer restricted to flooring. That’s thanks in large part to New York-based entrepreneur and environmen-

LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE talist Michelle Brown, who discovered cork on a trip to Portugal, where the versatile eco-friendly material was used to create a host of products. “In Portugal I was introduced to items made from cork and couldn’t understand why this amazing resource was vastly underused,” says Brown, who soon decided to bring this versatile material to the North American marketplace. Within two years of her trip to Portugal, Brown had done just that, founding All Cork, which produces eco-friendly and vegan handbags and other fashion accessories for men and women that are lightweight, durable, and stain- and water-resistant. Produced during a detailed and labor-intensive process, these products are proof that cork’s longstanding appeal is now stretching beyond flooring and into fashion. “Cork has evolved far beyond its traditional uses, and the possibilities for this leather alternative are endless,” says Brown. “I am excited and extremely proud to be a part of the movement towards eco- friendly fashion.” More information about cork can be found on the internet.

Tips to help manage exam time at school

Anxiety Is Normal We all experience anxiety – during roller coaster rides, first dates, job interviews, exams or other events and responsibilities. Anxiety helps us during dangerous situations by producing adrenaline to prepare the body to defend itself or perform well.

During exams, too much anxiety can be harmful because our body reacts as if there is danger when there is none. When we’re anxious, we can have an elevated heart rate, sweating, nausea, dizziness, chest tightness, and shakiness – this is not ideal during an exam!

Stress is a fact of life – it keeps us motivated and stimulated. Too much stress, however, makes our brain function poorly because stress turns off the frontal cortex (the thinking part of our brain). To think clearly, we need to calm down. To feel calmer, we can change unhelpful thoughts to helpful ones – think about how well you’ve studied and prepared rather than how you’ll fail. What we think or say has a powerful effect on how we feel.

To reduce stress, study thoroughly before the exam and eat well. Don’t write on an empty stomach or rely solely on caffeine and donuts. If you’re cramming until the wee hours, you’re not learning, but simply memorizing. Get to bed early. During the exam, attend to oral and written instructions and plan your time. Don’t panic if you don’t know an answer – go to another question. Breathe in slowly through your nose, hold it, and breathe out through your mouth to help calm yourself.

Whether you are studying, writing an exam, or preparing for an important event, these tips can help reduce stress and turn anxiety from being overwhelming to being manageable. And remember, you can always discuss concerns about your anxieties and how to manage stress with a counsellor or family health professional. Deb Stephens, MSW, R.S.W., B.Ed.

Steps

to choosing undergarments

When getting ready for a company Christmas party, there are so many little factors that a woman considers before the festivities! Apart from the location and whether or not it is a black tie event or something a little more casual, typically the first question a woman asks herself is: What am I going to wear? Once she has established what her outfit of choice is going to be for the party, the next series of questions which usually follow are: What shoes am I going to wear? What kind of jewellery should wear? How am I going to wear my hair? What style of make-up should I apply? There are so many little details that we pay attention to about our outer image, that sometimes we overlook the bare essentials! Yes! Our undergarments! When deciding what to wear underneath your outfit, there are many facets that need to be addressed; such as types of bras, panties, shapewear and/or hosiery. "What will work best for my outfit?" So to simpify this process I have put together six condensed suggestions that can guide you to choosing the perfect undergarments to fine tune your outfit! 1) If you are wearing a slinky cocktail dress, whether it is a long length or a short length, you may want to consider the Spanx Higher Power, which is a shapewear undergarment that situates on your body from just below your bust line all the way down to your mid-thigh. This item will help enhance a smooth seamless finish while providing that extra control that you may be seeking to ensure that your curves are finely and flawlessly addressed. 2) If you are wearing a skirt or dress pants, you may want to consider the Spanx Power Panty or the Spanx Undie-tectable Brief. The Spanx Power Panty is a long-legged panty that will provide you a smooth seamless finish from your waist to your mid-thigh, reducing cling and increasing your confidence! The Spanx Undie-tectable Brief is the same concept, although they are without any leg band. 3) If you are wearing a sheer or semi-sheer blouse, you may want to consider wearing a beautiful push-up bra accented with lace or perhaps a stunning all-lace-lined camisole to wear underneath. Either of these items will tastefully fine tune a sexy image without

looking inappropriate or offensive. 4) If you are wearing high heels with your skirt or dress, you may want to consider some festive hosiery such as all sheer or fishnet which may or may not contain rhinestones, Swarovski crystals or a back seam to add that little extra detail of tasteful feminine flirtation. 5) If you are wearing a backless or low plunge dress or blouse, you may want to consider the Nu Bra seamless, adhesive bra which will allow you to be worry free of unsightly straps while maintaining the support required in an everyday bra. 6) Last but not least, there is always the delightful option of wearing lingerie underneath your outfit! Something that will make you feel super sexy and feminine or perhaps even to entice your date. You may want to try a lace teddy, maybe a bodystocking or perhaps a sexy garter belt with some stockings. There are so many options in this category that the sky truly is the limit! It really does boil down to your confidence level and your personal preferences. So there you have it, my 6 simple solutions to help you accentuate your Christmas party attire!

Cruising is the no-work vacation People who are looking for a laid-back and fuss-free vacation can turn to cruising. Cruising remains popular and that popularity continues to grow. Data from the Cruise Line International Association, Inc. market profile survey for 2011 found that cruising ranks second as the most popular vacation behind land-based nonresort vacations. Almost 71 percent of the total vacation market has an interest in cruising. Among past cruisers, survey respondents said they will most likely take another cruise over the next three years. CLIA research indicates that cruisers tend to be middle-aged, predominantly married couples with a median income of $97,000. The higher household income may account for the ability to cruise amid a floundering economy. What’s behind the popularity of cruising? One of the main draws to cruising is its relative ease. From the moment a ship embarks, cruisers are aboard a floating hotel. All of their needs are met within the confines of the ship,

Cruising is one of the least labor-intensive vacations for travelers.

and there’s no hassle with baggage or layovers like there is for air travel. There’s also no traffic on the open seas, and cruisers can customize their days and do as little or as much as they like. The all-inclusive nature of cruising extends to meals. A popular factor of cruising is that one needn’t look far for the next meal. Unlike other hotels and resorts, there’s no traveling far for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and passengers don’t have to carry around extra money for meal expenses. Cruise packages often include allyou-can-eat options. This can seem like a bargain, as the cost of meals on other vacations tends to be a significant. According to Ehow.com, vacationers spend upwards of $600 in food for a week-long vacation. In comparison, cruising costs on average $1,500 per person, which covers the accommodations, meals, some excursions, and onboard activities. Travelers who are not interested in planning a day-to-day itinerary to keep busy often like the

amenities of cruising. Most cruises have a cruise director who leads guests in various activities during the day. Most modern-day cruise ships offer ample entertainment options. From swimming pools to skating rinks to rock walls to surfing simulators, there are activities for most age groups. For an additional cost, cruisers can leave the ship and go on specialized excursions at ports of call. Still, cruisers who just want to sit on deck and relax can do just that. Because most cruise ships travel in international waters, they are not governed by the rules of the land. For example, gambling is often legal aboard ships when they are out of port. Cruising remains one of the most popular types of vacations. And since CLIA says that many people still book cruise vacations through a travel agent, cruising may be one of the easiest vacations to plan and enjoy. Simply pack a suitcase and set sail.

Pharmacy compounding is a long-established tradition that offers customized care to meet the specific needs of individual patients. In the 1930s, the majority of prescriptions were compounded. The Skinny On Grape Skins Tannins come from grape skins and seeds and provide colour, flavour, and structure, giving them that astringent mouth feel characteristic of red wines. Winemakers can now experience a better wine using wine kits featuring grape skins. The wine kits enable you, the amateur winemaker, to increase your wine's exposure to the skins, allowing for more tannins to be extracted and more varietal character to develop, giving you a wine that is truer to its varietal style. In addition, grape skins are loaded with antioxidants. Resveratrol, an antioxidant found in grape skins and seeds, has been linked to numerous cardiovascular health benefits and is one of the main reasons red wine is celebrated as a heart-healthy drink. Antioxidants are found in all wines but, because of their prolonged contact with the grape skins, are most prevalent in reds. A serving tip for reds? Powerful, full-bodied reds show best just slightly above room temperature. Serve tannin-heavy wines at 18 to 21 degrees celsius (65-70F) to retain bold qualities.

Better Wine Making

Are Expert's Wine Ratings Irrelevant For Most People?

According to a new study, yes! Researchers at Penn State and Brock University, Ontario, measured the tasting ability of hundreds of wine drinkers and found that wine experts, professional winemakers, wine writers and wine judges have a fundamentally different sense of taste. Though training and experience do help develop the palate, the study found wine experts are just biologically more sensitive to subtle taste differences, meaning they can taste things the average person can't. So, if everyone, literally, has their own taste, should we bother listening to experts' recommendations? The answer? Drink what you like, regardless of what an expert says. Up north there’s a land without fences. Animals outnumber people, sunlight shines at midnight and nature reigns. Life is different. This northern frontier still boasts pristine landscapes, majestic wildlife and a coastline that is one of the most enthralling waterways in the world. Beyond Alaska’s fortress-like glacier walls lie scenic ports of call, treasured national parks, and abundant wildlife.
