CLINICALLY INSPIRED LEARNING IS ON TRACK Since the start of Dr. Oberstein’s presidency, one of his priorities has been to have students start learning adjusting skills earlier in the program. Implementing the Clinically Inspired Learning (CIL) transformation in the curriculum is the first Strategic Initiative in the college Strategic Plan. 2021 has seen the entire 14 quarter track and the first 5 quarters of the 12 quarter track finalized with the new CIL curriculum and the remaining 7 quarters of the 12 quarter track are being completed now. Clinic Learning Lab and other enhancements now see students entering the Health Center with noticeably more confidence and competence than previously.

ADMISSIONS HIGHLIGHTS Over the calendar year we matriculated the largest quarterly classes in over ten years! We welcomed students from the USA, Canada, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Thailand, Korea and China. The gender balance was almost 50/50. The college is thriving and without your support we could never continue to graduate first class chiropractors, filled with passion, knowledge and skill, and ready to change the world one spine at a time!

CONTINUING EDUCATION THRIVES WITH ONLINE OPTIONS Online continuing education programs grew through 2021 as chiropractors warmed to online learning. Enrollment in on-demand CE increased 150%. Live online classrooms were full while on-campus courses continued when county and state regulations allowed. Our CE department issued 3,350 CE certificates for Life West programs in 2021, and 4,427 certificates through our CE partners. That’s a lot of learning! Check the CE webpage for our continuous online programming, as well as upcoming on-campus events.

DR. OBERSTEIN ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF ACC As Chairman of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges beginning in 2021, Dr. Ron worked and continues to work on a broad agenda with a focus on engaging with NBCE to improve the board examination system for students, planning and strategy, and focusing the association on education priorities.

PRECEPTORSHIP Under the vision of Dr. Ron Oberstein and the leadership of Dr. Scott Donaldson, the preceptorship program at Life West has literally taken off like a rocket. This was a clear and obvious need that the president identified early in his tenure and is now growing every quarter. Validation of how powerful this experience is for setting our graduates up for success in practice is evidenced by the graduates and preceptor doctors, and how they perceive the experience. Surveys of the interns showing that they LOVE being on preceptorships. The real test of competence and confidence comes in the real world private clinic and in 2021 the college Health Center achieved the mark of over 80% senior interns out on preceptorship.

LEARNING COMMONS TRANSFORMATION One of the largest and most exciting projects at Life West in the last decade has been the transformation of our traditional library to the new Learning Commons. This is a contemporary and technology enhanced space. Almost all stacks have been removed, new carpet and furniture installed, and the space brightened with new color and decorations. An Anatomage table has been added and will be the centerpiece of a new anatomy learning space in the Learning Commons. The addition of the Museum to the space has generated great interest from students and visitors alike.

ANNIVERSARY YEAR LONG CELEBRATION March 13th set off our year long celebration of 40 years as Life Chiropractic College West. On that day the Board of Pacific States Chiropractic College resigned, a new board was elected that changed the name to Life Chiropractic College West and elected Dr. Gerry Clum as interim President. The rest is history! LCCW graduated its first class in 1983 and in 1991, at the request of Dr. Sid Williams, Dr. Oberstein joined the Board of Regents of Life West.

13

Dr. Gerry Clum was still in the president’s seat not only growing and building the college, but doing amazing things politically in the state of California. Fast forward another 30 years and the college has graduated 6,000+ DCs, all the while staying true to DD’s and BJ’s vitalistic and salutogenic philosophy and staying grounded in Dr. Williams’ values of Lasting Purpose - Giving, Doing, Loving and Serving out of one’s own abundance.

MARCH /A PRIL 2021 YEAR IN REVIEW

All through 2021 the college celebrated the 40th with new banners and wall art in the Standard Process Assembly Hall and parking lot, an anniversary issue of Life West Magazine, each quarter’s student activities and events themed with the Giving (Winter), Doing (Spring), Loving (Summer), Serving (Fall) values, and a very special webinar series hosted by Dr. Oberstein in March.

DRS. SID AND NELL WILLIAMS MEMORIAL COURTYARD For many years students at Life West have taken what little grass they had around the campus and made the most of it. The Grassy Knoll was one such place but in winter with the leaf drop, rain and lack of sun to dry out the ground, the knoll became unusable. Dr. Oberstein knew that with the right funding in place, the space could be repurposed into a new year-round outdoor leisure courtyard and so the wheels were set into motion. He and Dr. Zeigler explained the need at conferences, meetings with alumni and friends, and finally at Dynamic Essentials, along with other potential donors. Within a matter of months the college had fundraised what it needed to make the courtyard a reality. Construction began in January 2021 and in April the Memorial

15

Courtyard was opened in time for our Life West Discovery Weekend. When asked about the inspiration for the courtyard, President Oberstein commented: “I was looking for a way to share the vision of Drs. Sid and Nell Williams while integrating nature’s elements, which both Drs. Sid and Nell treasured. This multi-purpose Memorial Courtyard will be a landmark on our campus and also enshrine the Williams as the founders of Life West.” Without the generous support of our donors, none of this would have happened. Our gratitude goes out to all the individuals and organizations who donated for helping to make the Memorial Courtyard part of the Life West experience for our current and future students, faculty and staff.

D&I SUMMITS AND THE CERF FORUM Diversity and Inclusion is the second Strategic Initiative in the Strategic Plan and 2021 saw a lot of positive action. Life West hosted two D&I Summits in 2020 that culminated in a hands on Workshop in June 2021 for a total attendance of 148 participants representing 13 chiropractic colleges, 9 associations/organizations and 4 companies servicing the profession. We were invited to present the outcomes to the Chiropractic Education Research Forum (CERF) in December. The outcomes included a Planning Sheet that provides over 130 individual actions any organization can use to increase their diversity and a ready made plan content and structure for them to adapt to their own circumstances. In June Silvia Bielser joined us as D&I Coordinator, moving from her previous work as D&I Manager at the U.S. Tennis Association Northern California. In April the college held a D&I Symposium with over 100 attending students, faculty and staff. The symposium resulted in all college departments setting their own individual D&I targets and incorporating these into the departmental annual plans.

GIVING DAY In June we had a tremendous amount of support from those who contributed, and we’d like to say thank you! After 40 years of excellence, Life West offered alumni the opportunity to make a profound contribution to the lives and education of the next generation of chiropractors studying at Life West. Each donation was used to aid in advancing the educational experience, facilities, and student experience for current and future current and future students. All donations were automatically doubled through a grant from a generous benefactor. 2021 we were able to complete the renovations in the gym, student lounge, library, museum, and finance some exciting initiatives that will come to fruition in the months ahead. We look forward to 2022’s Giving Day! Let our alumni voices be heard on the next Life West Giving Day so together we create a strong foundation for the future chiropractors of the world.

In June Life West hosted the American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA) annual convention which welcomed chiropractic students and DCs from across the country. As an institution we were honored to have all our ABCA friends at Life West especially after a difficult year without our community close to us. From student intern Xavier Crawford, SABCA president at Life West: “ABCA’s primary goal since its inception has been to promote diversity in chiropractic specifically by uplifting Chiropractors of color. This past weekend Life West was able to sow into that. We were able to celebrate together in an auditorium full of caring Chiropractors of color. An act of fellowship worth its weight in gold.”

AUGUST 2021 YEAR IN REVIEW

THE WAVE WENT VIRTUAL The annual Life West Wave in August was a highlight of the 40th anniversary year. It was to be a return to campus and celebration of alumni support and sharing of memories from all that is Life West. A day before the Wave began, the college was required by Alameda County to cancel the on-campus event due to Covid restrictions. With over 600 registered participants the choice was clear: we know how to do this! The pivot to virtual was seamless. Several vendors did arrive just in time to see the vendor hall being dismantled a day after it was set up. The Virtual Wave in 2020 was the model and 2021 again saw large attendance. With the pivot we still had over 500 in attendance online. Make sure you book now for Wave 2022. Tickets are free so use the QR code to register now! The dates are August 5-6, 2022.

ADMINISTRATION SIGNS UPDATED CBA WITH FACULTY UNION A significant milestone this year was the signing in November of the three year Comprehensive Bargaining Agreement. The negotiations were tough but fair and the outcome reflected that. MEN’S RUGBY VS LIFE UNIVERSITY After eight years of anticipation, the men’s rugby team finally met their Life U counterpart in an elite game. Held at Boxer Stadium on a beautiful sunny day in San Francisco in November, the game was played in great spirits and frenetic pace. Life West took the honors 42-29 in this historic first encounter.
