COVER STORY

Delivering safety 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Polokeho Lifting & Testing Services might very well be the new kid on the block, but don’t underestimate the knowledge and experience this new company holds within its folds. Lifting Africa spoke to founder and managing director Eben du Preez to find out more. Starting a business is hard work in any environment, but it is a lot harder doing so amidst a global pandemic. Despite the tough economic climate and the challenging period faced by businesses the world over, Du Preez opted to go ahead and Polokeho Lifting & Testing Services saw the light. “We had already registered and established the business back in 2018, but only started trading last year shortly after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is no denying that it was difficult, but we were up for the challenge and we have managed to find our feet despite the pandemic and all of the challenges it has brought to the business.” Du Preez has been involved in the lifting industry for many years. He started his career as a rigger’s assistant. “My dad was in the lifting industry and had dedicated his life to lifting and rigging. Following in his footsteps I started working at a young age as it was all I ever wanted to do.”

Working both locally and abroad, Du Preez has built a reputation for himself as a reliable rigger and LMI that finds no job too heavy or too light. “I worked my way up from the bottom starting as an assistant before qualifying as a rigger and later as an LMI. The dream was always to have my own company. It was time to make the move and the result is Polokeho.”Bringing together years of hard work, knowledge and experience Du Preez has put together a team of qualified and highly experienced Red Seal Riggers, Lifting Machinery Inspectors, and mobile crane operators. Safety first “As specialists in all aspects of the mobile crane, rigging and lifting industry, our daily goal is to live up to the name of our business. It describes the basis on which we operate and deliver services,” says Du Preez explaining that Polokeho means safety in Sesotho. “We don’t cut corners and we don’t take chances. I have worked in this industry for a long time and I have experienced first-hand what happens when safety is not the top priority. It is not negotiable within our company.” He says having had to do several crane recoveries while working for some of the world’s largest crane operators safety is not compromised at Polokeho. “It is our main focus every morning when we arrive on site. We are only ever as good as our last job and that means we need to deliver a service that is reputable and safe every day.” According to Du Preez, it is not just about sharing his extensive knowledge and experience, but employing the right people. “We place a lot of emphasis on knowledge. Our teams are constantly training to ensure they are up to date with the latest industry developments and know the equipment they are working with well. We also make sure that every job we tackle is handled thoroughly and no issues are overlooked.” Relationships are important for Du Preez. “Throughout my career, I have always been focused on building relationships with clients and service providers alike. It is partly why we have managed to establish our business during these tough times as people know what I stand for and what I deliver. It is the same for the company as we set out to fulfil our clients' needs in the most

LIFTING & TESTING SERVICES

professional and timeous manner.” The company just recently finished a project for Concord Cranes which saw eight rigging teams with certified rigging equipment on-site daily. “We are a growing team that works well together. The emphasis in the company is on our people – they are a real asset and make all the difference when we get to the site. When it comes to our business, a good deal of knowledge and experience is required to do the job safely and promptly.” Going forward Du Preez has big plans for Polokeho despite the ongoing pandemic and the tough economic environment. “Yes, it is difficult out there, but we are not going to let that stand in our way. For us, at Polokohe a challenge or an obstacle is just an opportunity. We have registered the company as Lifting Machinery Entity at the Department of Labour and adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety regulations. We have LMIs in our full-time employment as well as ten Red Seal rigging teams and mobile crane operators who are all fully qualified and trained.” Already operating across South Africa, with a predominant footprint in the Northern Cape where they service the mining and renewable energy sectors, in particular, Du Preez says growing their footprint in the rest of the country and across several other sectors such as the petrochemical industry, construction and engineering are all part of the strategy going forward. “At the moment most of our focus is on rigging and load testing. Our larger goal over time is to grow the business to such an extent that we can do a complete scope of work for clients.” It is important, he says, that the company does not grow too fast and Du Preez has set clear, achievable goals. “We are versatile and agile enough to grow, but we are also dependable and when we commit we deliver. Diversifying the business is important in these times as it makes for sustainability, but we are not in a hurry and are working very systematically towards our bigger goals.”

INDUSTRY NEWS

The ECSA and LMI registration dilemma Amidst an ongoing global pandemic, economic uncertainty and new methods of operating in the past 18 months have not been easy on companies and individuals alike. As if this is not enough LMIs are reporting further challenges with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) that they say is impacting their ability to operate. Lifting Africa spoke to several parties to find out more. The complaints vary. Some LMIs report years of struggle, others say it is a recent phenomenon exacerbated by Covid-19. What is clear, however, is that a general feeling of unhappiness exists within the industry towards ECSA, mandated by the Department of Labour to register and regulate LMIs. “In my view, they are simply not interested in our business,” says one LMI. “From an industry point of view, I am not sure what the value is for us. We pay registration fees, scope fees, extension fees creating a good revenue stream for ECSA, but what is the benefit of that to our industry?” Another LMI agrees to say that while there is a good collection of fees, not much is received back for

the monies paid. “I emailed ECSA on several occasions to simply request a letter of my scope. After the second email, I received a reference number, but to date, I have not received the letter I asked.” Several LMIs Lifting Africa spoke to shared the same experience. “If they are unable to deal with a simple request such as a letter of scope, how do they deal with the serious issues where people’s lives are at risk out in the field?” Another common concern is finding the right person to deal with. “The staff turnover is pretty high and one can speak to someone about something today, only to find they are no longer there the very next day. It makes it very difficult to build a relationship with people when they are constantly changing.” This has been even more of a challenge during Covid with many people working from home. “Getting hold of anyone is a near miracle. You are just passed from one person to the other and leaving a message is pointless as no one ever returns one’s calls.” Going to the offices in person is no help either as they have instituted Covid-protocols prohibiting anyone from just walking in. “I was near the ECSA offices recently and wanted to drop off my registration

8

Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

documents in person and was told they would not be accepted. I either had to send them online or have them delivered via courier. It just does not make sense.” LMIs, have consistently been sharing the concerns with industry body LEEASA that in turn has added its voice to the growing concern around ECSA and its ability to service the lifting industry well. LEEASA has been asking its members to keep it abreast of the issues and a long list of complaints have been collected. The Association says it continues to monitor the situation and address problems as it can. According to LEEASA, one such solution is to improve the mentorship programme that is currently used at ECSA. This comes after one of the challenges identified was that of ECSA Board members asking LMIs to pay them large sums of money to mentor them through the registration process and prepare them for interviews. More woes LMIs state it can take months if not years to register with ECSA. Without registration, they can’t operate impeding their ability to earn a living. One man says he has tried unsuccessfully since 2009 and has since given up, opting to find another avenue of work completely. “I just gave up. I simply could not get it right,” he says. Another LMI says he found himself deregistered. “It took me months to get to the bottom of the problem and to understand why I was no longer registered. It has now taken several more months to get registered. I was unable to work

According to Millicent Kabwe, ECSA Manager: Stakeholder Relations and Marketing, the process for registration as a specified category including registering as an LMI can be found on their website. “Usually, the time it takes to update or change scopes follows the same process as new applications with the turnaround time being four

months. Although ECSA complies with registration process timelines, we do have a challenge of a limited pool of available peers to assist with the reviewing of LMIs and LMEs applications. Numerous calls have been put out for more LMIs and LMEs to participate in the ECSA registration process as peers. Not only will this improve our four months turnaround times but it will further strengthen this category of registration.”

hand. “Should the LMIs and LMEs experience any challenges related to registration, ECSA is at liberty to engage directly with them. We have always opened our doors to assist individuals who are having difficulty with our processes. Furthermore, to facilitate assistance at all times, queries are managed through our call centre and where necessary issues can be escalated to the relevant office for speedy resolution.”

On the issue of deregistration with LMIs that have had issues, Kabwe says ECSA has a clear process that guides how de-registrations are managed i.e the de-registration process is preceded by notification to those who are about to be de-registered using details which were provided during the time of application to register. “Some registered persons do not update such personal information leading to ECSA notifications being sent to originally given contact details but these are no longer in use.” The spokesman says it is important that LMIs update their contact details regularly to make sure that ECSA has the correct information at

“There are complex cases that ECSA deals with and some of them are legal and resolution timeframes can be long depending on the intricacies of the complaint and if there are multiple stakeholders involved,” concludes Kabwe. So, whatever the existing issues are with LMI registration, the fact is that Users lifting machines have to be examined and tested as per DMR 18 requirements. The sooner the process is streamlined and the above issues are addressed and sorted out, the safer lifting machines and the public will be, which is after all the main objective of the ECSA LMI process!

for more than a year.” Another LMI says it has taken 7 months to get a change of scope from ECSA, while someone else says changing his scope has proven to be near impossible. “I am not sure how we are expected to work with these timelines. They are simply not realistic. In the meantime, I can’t work as an LMI and am unable to earn an income.” Another major problem according to the industry is the process around complaints. “It is in the interest of safety and industry to deal with it timeously and quickly,” says an LMI we spoke to. “The time frame we have been given to deal with ethical matters is eight months and 12 months on technical matters. That cannot be considered a reasonable time frame by anyone’s standards.”

INDUSTRY NEWS

Activity in the market has been closely linked to lockdown in the country as the fight against a global pandemic continues Hopes are high that with the Covid-19 vaccine programme now underway, the economy will grow and business will pick up. Lifting Africa spoke to Mishen Naidoo, engineering and solutions manager at Manitou Southern Africa, about the current market trends, challenges and opportunities. The market conditions in 2020 were volatile and uncertain, not just in South Africa, but around the world. “The Covid pandemic has had a severe impact on business,” says Naidoo. “CAPEX has become a challenge for many businesses and it also led to global material shortages. More recently shipping constraints have been experienced and supply chains continue to be disrupted.” But, says Naidoo, as the vaccination drive continues to gain traction, there is a great bounce-back that we experienced in the first half of 2021. “Internationally, markets are on a sustained growth trajectory already. Our factories are ramping up to be able to supply the increasing demand.” Meeting demand According to Naidoo, Manitou Southern Africa has continued to see growth and recently separated into two entities: one being a customer-facing and focussed entity in the form of Manitou Centres, and the other remaining as the Manitou Group subsidiary, Manitou Southern Africa, which provides dealer support and development. “This has been a natural transition, born from the desire of wanting to be closer to our customer base,” he explains. “From a Manitou Group perspective, there have also been some new developments such as an exciting drive towards greener, sustainability-focused machines. This means that the Manitou

10

Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

electric range of equipment is growing, and becoming more popular. In addition to this, Manitou has redefined the Manitou rotational telehandler - the MRT Vision range.” “This range offers a 3 in 1 solution: telescopic, basket and suspended loads, offering a versatile tool carrier with a variety of attachment

possibilities. The newly designed panoramic cabin ensures exceptional visibility and access has been made easier through all 4 sides of the machine, no matter the position of the turret. The cab visibility and easy access put the operator’s safety at the forefront.” Naidoo says there has been a rapid move towards automation as the

of the machine to allow for service alerts and proactive response, thus minimizing operational downtime.

“Another global trend which is becoming prevalent in South Africa is environmental concerns, particularly in terms of emissions and recycling. Manitou leverages on their re-manufacturing programs to extend the life of machines and subsequently reduce an operational carbon footprint,” he says. “The Internet of Things (IoT) is another trend with artificial intelligence

“When it comes to attachments in the industry, there is always a need for new attachment options for new applications,” says Naidoo. “There is also a strong focus on safety and more machinery features are required to prevent operator error, e.g., fatigue monitoring and pedestrian monitoring.” Asked about an increase in demand for material handling solutions

for backhoe loaders has also increased this year in the plant hire, construction and agricultural sectors.” Going forward “In many areas, we are still behind the rest of the world. For instance, internationally there is a drive for hydrogen or electric powered machinery but in South Africa, we are constrained by our electricity grid. This raises a challenge, which we believe may be short-lived, as alternate energy sources are becoming more accessible.”

INDUSTRY NEWS

scope of tasks is getting larger and wider and the speed at which tasks need to be carried out is increasing.

Naidoo says internet accessibility and stability is also not as strong in Africa as it is in Europe and other first world countries, but also this is improving. “Safety is paramount. This is a trend we are seeing everywhere in the world. In this regard training is important.” According to Naidoo, opportunities exist in the market to show the benefit of the rotational telehandler. “The versatility of a rotational telehandler results in a long term cost saving. This has been demonstrated in the international marketplace.” Short term rentals are also an opportunity for material handling, particularly in the current business environment as it gives businesses access to equipment for short term projects without the need to purchase.

already being used extensively in the supply chain and warehousing industry. This will likely carry through to other industries, as has already been seen in the agriculture industry.” Machine telematics is also becoming a common feature in material handling machinery. This allows for the tracking of both the machine location and the health

locally, Naidoo said there was a definite leap from the stagnant market in 2020. “The first half of 2021 saw an incredible spike in heavy telehandlers, across the mining industry linking to the current mining supercycle that is underway, with some construction companies on a buying cycle for reach telehandlers. The demand

“Manitou offers a subscription option to their customers. This option differs from the typical short term rental and offers far more flexibility in that the machines are not charged for on a daily rate but rather customers subscribe to a contract over a set period with a base monthly contract fee about their estimated usage. This is ideal for businesses whose operations are cyclical or seasonal as they only pay for the hours that they use.”

FORKLIFTS

The perfect forklift fit renting vs buying

Many businesses grapple with the choice between buying and renting a forklift which could impact both their efficiency and bottom line. As specialists in the materialhandling industry, Masslift Africa understands that no two operations are the same and thus expertly guides clients to choose the correct solution to fit their unique business needs. Although most of Masslift's clients choose to rent forklifts, this may not make business sense in some cases. When choosing between renting or purchasing a forklift, a business must first answer a few questions to assist in the decision-making process. Masslift's Chief Executive Officer, Marco Caverni stresses the importance of assessing the specific needs of each client, to ultimately make the correct decision for the client. "Businesses must weigh up different factors such as the frequency the forklift would be used, the cost of capital financing and maintenance," says Caverni. Frequency of Usage Caverni says the decision ultimately hinges on how frequently the client expects to use a machine. He suggests that renting with ownership or outright purchasing is best for lower utilisation applications. If a forklift is used for less than 150 hours per month 12

Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

– less than 9 000 hours in five years – it makes sense to own the asset and sweat it for another three years thereafter until it reaches the 14 000 hour ceiling. “With a forklift being a grudge purchase as it either adds to your cost of production or your cost of distribution, it is vital you get the maximum use out of the asset over the period of its economic life. At Masslift we believe that it becomes uneconomical to maintain a forklift after 14 000 hours.” says Caverni Renting makes better business sense for higher utilisation applications. A forklift that operates around 200 hours per month would do approximately 12 000 hours after five years. This would leave limited additional time to sweat the asset further. In this case, renting is advised, which allows the client to return the machine after five years and replace it with a new one. Additionally, if the use of machines is seasonal and the types of machines required vary in the client’s operations, it is more convenient to be able to rent the required machines during busy season without incurring storage and maintenance costs for the off-season periods. It also becomes possible to have different types of

machines meeting the operation’s requirements without buying them. Cash Flow Considerations Clients need to assess whether they have the necessary cash flow to pay for a forklift which could also be hampered by required capex approvals internally. If not, then a rental or rental with ownership is the natural solution. Caverni says opting to rent instead of buying means the client faces indefinite payments towards an asset they would never own. "Most people rent for 60 months, and on average, the forklift will have around 6 000 to 9 000 hours on the clock at the end of the term, and then the customer replaces it with a new unit and starts the process again," he points out. "If you purchase a quality forklift, it can run to over 14 000 hours. So you lose out on sweating the asset for that extended period – the additional 5 000 hours." However, the benefits of renting often outstrip the costs, including saving on the large capital investment especially in the current economic times where financing institutions are more stringent with their lending criteria. From a cash-flow perspective, it is more

Masslift’s Offering Clients can rent forklifts from Masslift on an hourly, weekly or monthly basis, while there is also the option to extend the term to as long as 120 months. Caverni says the ultimate benefit to clients is the peace of mind they receive from Masslift's industry-leading service and the world-class forklifts. "When you are renting a forklift, your three main requirements are that the forklift is legally fit to be used, the forklift is reliable, and that the forklift's running costs are as low as possible," Caverni says. "At Masslift, we ensure all forklifts on our fleet are load-tested annually,

FORKLIFTS

attractive to rent as the monthly amount is determined upfront and is unlikely to change over the rental period. The consistent monthly rental payments provide predictability of cash flows within the business. A rental also comes with an inbuilt maintenance contract, so you have the peace of mind that backup is not far away if the forklift ever breaks down and those costs will not affect your bottom line.

and we do not rent our forklifts without a valid load test. We also only rent forklifts younger than 10 years old with lower hours, rather than renting older units with major hours on the clock like a lot of other companies do. And lastly, the Mitsubishi Forklift is incredibly fuel efficient, and will save the client money throughout forklifts life. " For clients who can afford the initial capital outlay required for an outright purchase or have the required credit facilities, Masslift offers over 170 models of reliable Mitsubishi forklifts with an 8 year/12 000 powertrain warranty – the longest in the South African forklift industry. Along with being

known for our varied product offering, Masslift is also renowned for exceptional customer service. Regardless of whether a client buys or rents, clients can claim 250% of their procurement spend with Masslift towards their B-BBEE spend. Masslift is the sole distributor of the robust and reliable Mitsubishi Forklifts. The business has 25 service centres across Southern Africa with the major focus centred around service excellence.

HEAVY LIFTS

Heavy lifting equipment runs on polymer bearings Up and coming dock-levelling manufacturer, REV Designs, recently completed the design and construction of three of the country’s largest scissor lifts ever produced with a capacity of up to 40 tons per lift. The Springs-based manufacturer incorporated a host of clever designs to facilitate the heavy-lifting ability of the scissor lifts, which will be used in the sawmilling industry. It also included the latest polymer bearings to enable heavy lifting with minimal wear and damage for and considerably longer service life and maintenance intervals. According to REV Designs chief designer and founder, Ricardo Viljoen, the use of igus highperformance polymer bearings ensures that the pivot points work smoothly with vastly reduced wear compared to traditional bearings and the added advantage of not requiring either lubrication or daily maintenance.

Tough environment “The bearings needed to be very strong to withstand the kind of forces that are placed on it in this hard-pushed timber processing environment.” “The bearings also have a distinct advantage in this kind of “dirty environment” with potential for the ingress of sawdust, woodchips and other debris that could snag lesser bearings. “With this in mind, we chose to work closely with igus’ polymer bearing specialist, Juan-Eric Davidtz, who was able to match the right bearings for our requirements. Our design uses 33 bushes per lift and each one has specific operational

requirements,” says Ricardo. He adds that polymer bearings supplied by igus have become integral to nearly all new designs due to the bearings rugged and long-lasting abilities. That means that the bearings can last as long as the best materials used on the company's lifting equipment, docklevellers and other equipment. Growing demand The success of the bearings in the massive scissor lifts has also buoyed Juan-Eric, who says the company’s polymer products are increasingly being used in all kinds of industries and the timber industry is the latest one. “We are an international supplier of motion plastics such as bearings, energy chains to protect cables and hydraulics, as well as speciality cables for different applications. Our motion plastics take things to a different level and usually result in machines and equipment using our products being more effective and long-lasting than those using traditional materials.”

The new entries in the Magni range

The rough terrain scissor lift range offers lifting heights from 12 to 22 metres and load capacities from 363 to 750 kg. These are perfect to operate in extreme conditions. They provide unrivalled off-road performance thanks to several technical features common to the entire range: • Four-wheel drive and positive traction control ensure unrivalled off-road performance and allow to work on all types of terrain. • The oscillating axle senses the terrain and adjusts its position based on ground conditions to ensure maximum stability and grip. It is specially designed to work on uneven and rough terrain. • Solid rubber non-marking tyres are standard on all models. They are extremely durable and designed to withstand the damage and debris found on a typical job site. Besides providing optimal traction, the deep tread extends the serviceable life of the tyres. • Auto-levelling stabilisers provide greater stability to work safely on uneven terrain. Once the machine reaches a certain working height, they activate automatically and adapt perfectly to the working surface. The two new entries in the rough terrain range are the ES1523RT

and ES1823RT models, which join the corresponding diesel models to further expand the range. In addition to the essential features common to diesel models, these scissor lifts stand out because they are fully electric. This results in a silent-running, zero emissions and easy maintenance. OVERHEAD CRANES

RGM Cranes supports productivity at Sandvik’s new facilities

Leveraging a healthy existing relationship with RGM Cranes, Sandvik Mining RSA appointed the company to provide 19 overhead single and double girder cranes, ranging from 3 to 30 tonnes in capacity, at its new facilities in Kempton Park. Anthony Breedt, Technical Department Project Coordinator at Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions Southern Africa, explains that in addition to RGM Crane’s track record, factors that were taken into consideration in the awarding of the contract included customer service, the ability to quickly and efficiently formulate bespoke solutions, and the ready availability of spares and components. “As an added bonus for Sandvik Mining RSA, RGM Cranes’ overhead single and double girder cranes are highly affordable, making the costto-performance ratio extremely favourable,” says Shaun Field, Sales Engineer at RGM Cranes. Field says the selected RGM Cranes overhead cranes incorporate Guralp equipment that includes a hoist monitoring system, electromagnetic 20

brakes, predictive maintenance application, programmable control unit, variable speed drive control on cross and long travel motions, as well as load limits in a sheave bracket to assist with uncalibrated loads. The hoist monitoring system quickly identifies and provides feedback on any crane faults; operator faults and mishandling; overloads; excessive use; the amount of lifts completed in one shift and the number of hours a crane is in operation on a daily basis. The project rollout was conducted in three phases: • Workshop 1 – Rebuilding of all steel track units. • Workshop 2 – Rebuilding of all rubber tyre vehicles with local components in accordance with customer requirements and OEM

standards. • Workshop 3 – Production unit where Sandvik will build new units locally. RGM Cranes worked closely with the Sandvik team to develop a floor plan and workshop layout that would optimise the functionality of each of the cranes. “The cranes are being used for various operations within a number of sections that include maintenance, production, processing, wash bay, components department and the manufacturing department. It was important

to offer a combination of crane configurations that would maximise crane usage for the different area applications and equipment to be lifted,” says Field. Breedt says the project was expedited in a seamless manner, with RGM Cranes installing and commissioning all cranes ahead of the original schedule. “A major factor in the success of the project was the open line of communication the RGM Cranes team maintained from the outset. In addition, the uncompromising technical advice and support

provided by RGM Cranes has ensured that the installation has been completely stress-free and safe for all stakeholders.” “This is a perfect example of a company that doesn’t just want to sell their products, but provides the right type of equipment for our specific applications to ensure maximised productivity for Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions.”

MOBILE CRANES

Allied Crane Hire’s new Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 mobile crane Liebherr has delivered the first LTM 1230-5.1 mobile crane to the African continent. It went to the crane and heavy transport company Allied Crane Hire, based in Cape Town, South Africa. The long telescopic boom of the 230-ton crane and technical innovations such as VarioBallast®, VarioBase® and the Liebherr SingleEngine Concept were important decision-making criteria. • Liebherr delivers the first LTM 1230-5.1 to Africa • Long telescopic boom and innovations offering more economy and flexibility are important decision criteria • Allied Crane Hire is an established specialist for crane hire in subSaharan countries Allied Crane Hire has established itself as a specialist in crane hire in sub-Saharan Africa. The 24-year-old company operates more than 80 mobile and crawler cranes, which are mainly used in petrochemicals, mining, wind and solar farms and the construction industry. The company bought its first Liebherr crane 20 years ago. The LTM 1230-5.1 is now the latest model in the fleet. André Engelbrecht, Managing Director at Allied Crane Hire, explains: “Crane experts will agree that Liebherr has the best technology in mobile and crawler cranes and is a pioneer in the industry. An important criterion for us in choosing the LTM 12305.1 was its 75-metre telescopic boom. This allows us to do many crane jobs without having to set up a lattice jib”. The Liebherr LTM 22

Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

1230-5.1 is an ideal crane for work in steep positions and at great heights, for example in wind turbine maintenance or petrochemical operations. With lattice extensions, the LTM-1230-5.1 reaches a maximum lifting height of 111 metres. Another important purchase criterion for Allied Crane Hire was the Liebherr VarioBallast®. The ballast radius of the LTM 12305.1 can be adjusted between 4.8 and 5.7 metres. “Operations in the petrochemical and mining industries are extremely challenging: little space, time pressure and constantly changing conditions. This calls for high flexibility from the cranes," declares Engelbrecht. Mobile crane specially designed for VarioBase® The engineers at Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH put the multiaward-winning VarioBase® support technology at the heart of the structural steel construction when creating the concept for the LTM 1230-5.1. This makes it the first crane to have an asymmetrical support base: The width is 7.4 metres at the front and 8.1 metres at the rear. “Thanks to VarioBase®, it’s now possible to enable really high lifting capacities, especially in the rear working area, over the 8.1 metre wide supports – calculated

in real-time by the LICCON controller”, explains Erik Benz, Head of the Mobile and Crawler Cranes Division at Liebherr-Africa. “This new digitalisation option has a major influence on the structural steel technology, while enhancing customer benefit in the form of increased lifting capacities”. “We call the combination of trapezoidal and variable support base VarioBase®Plus”, adds Francois Pretorius, Sales Representative at Liebherr-Africa. “The single-stage sliding beams at the front are lighter. The weight saved could be used to increase the boom length.” Allied Crane Hire also appreciates the many other technical Liebherr innovations, such as the SingleEngine Concept and ECOmode, which reduce fuel consumption and noise emissions. “Many of our working conditions are really tough – so efficiency is a fundamental requirement for all the machines we operate. The new LTM 1230-5.1 is characterised by high performance, economy and flexibility – thanks to Liebherr's systematic advancement of successful technologies,” states Engelbrecht.

and limited by rotary limit switches defining and limiting travel extremities. The crane's lift, swivel and crab movements, and all hydraulic grab and release functions, can be operated by either remote control or backup pendant. Commenting on the newly completed crane, Condra’s managing director Marc Kleiner said that that the large size of the machine and the complex task of designing it to achieve optimal productivity, had excluded most crane manufacturers from competing for the contract.

Underground jib crane will recover spilled ore Condra has designed and manufactured a very large jib crane for bulk recovery underground of ore spilt at an unnamed mine. Delivered last week, the 5-ton crane has a lifting height of 9 metres, a slewing radius of 5 metres, and is equipped with an orangepeel grab and electromagnet combination that allows bulk ore to be gathered, lifted and positioned while simultaneously separating the iron ore within it using the electromagnet. After installation and commissioning at surface level for trials, the crane will play a key role in a prototype ore recovery process. Permanent installation underground will take place after six months of tests. The mine’s surface-level prototype solution comprises five different types of machines working together. Ore spilt along the conveyor lines will first be recovered by small articulated loaders which will place it on dump trucks for depositing in a purpose-built pit. The jib crane will then retrieve the ore from the pit using a combined grabbing, magnetising, lifting, slewing and travel functionality, depositing the ore into a feed hopper from where 24

Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

a secondary conveyor belt will transport it to re-join the main ore stream on its way to the crushing plant. The Condra jib crane is the key to this solution and has been designed and built to withstand a harsh underground working environment with minimal maintenance. It comprises a pillar-supported double-girder beam topped by the crab-mounted hoist, an arrangement that maximises the grab’s lifting height and optimises productivity in the execution of a repetitive but complex lifting task within the spilt ore recovery process. The crab itself is jam-packed with equipment, holding not only the 5-ton variable-speed-drive hoist, but also the hydraulic power pack, two hydraulic hose reels serving the opening and closing functions of the orange-peel grab, and the cable-reeling drum serving the electromagnet. Slewing action is delivered by power from three swivel drives,

“The jib crane market is very competitive at its entry-level or small-machine end, and we do not actively compete in that segment,” he said. “But as crane size and complexity increases, Condra becomes difficult to beat in terms of engineering and design expertise. “We have worked hard over many years to achieve an ability to align with both end-users and multiple third-party suppliers to deliver the required solution,” he added. Principal co-suppliers for Condra’s ore recovery crane were Rec-OQuip, which designed the overall multiple-machine concept process, and MMH Recycling Systems which supplied the five-tine hydraulic grab. Asked about Condra’s plans for the jib crane market, Kleiner said that increasing manufacturing efficiencies within the production process for this type of crane would make the company more competitive in bids for smaller, standardised designs. “These efficiencies will also reinforce Condra’s position as the manufacturer of choice for large jib cranes such as the machine just completed,” he said. Further jib crane orders are anticipated.

Performance. Comfort. Versatility.

GANTRY CRANES The versatility of portable lifting equipment and gantry cranes has been successfully demonstrated by REID Lifting in the Bloodhound land speed record project. Lifting Africa finds out more. Bloodhound is possibly one of the most exciting and ambitious projects to date. This UK-based project is aiming to break the world land speed record using the most advanced straight-line racing car ever built. The current world land speed record (LSR) of 763.035 mph (1,227.985 km/h) was set over 20 years ago by a British team including Bloodhound LSR driver Andy Green. Advances in engineering design, materials and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) since the last record was broken meaning the team is increasingly confident of breaking this record. According to Simon Luke, Managing Director of REID Lifting, it is a project his company is delighted to be involved with. Not only is this project helping to push boundaries and demonstrate pioneering new technologies, but it is also showcasing the importance of the lifting industry. Many of the aspects of the land speed record car have required engineers to think in new ways and manufacturers to develop novel production and testing 26

Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

methods. The same goes for the lifting experts. Offering an extensive range of lightweight and versatile and portable lifting solutions REID Lifting is considered a global leader in the design and manufacture of aluminium portable lifting and access systems. With more than 25 years of expertise and operations in major countries around the globe, the company has expertly engineered its systems through the use of lightweight aluminium as an alternative to steel, setting a precedent for innovation and successful experimentation. “Innovation is at the heart of what we do,” says Luke pointing out that the company has a solid reputation for designing high-quality and resilient products for use across a diverse range of industries. “There is no better example of our innovation than with our catapult lift that weighs only 18kg but can easily lift up to 600kg.” With safety and efficiency in any environment at the top of the priority list, the company’s transportable lifting solutions has continued to be a

focus. “This is one investment for multiple applications,” says Reid. “It is more profitable to have a transportable lifting solution that can be easily moved rather than investing in several fixed equipment. In this way, maintenance, labour, installation, testing and insurance costs can be reduced considerably.” Solutions to overcome challenges "At Reid Lifting we are more than just product providers," said Luke. "It is important to us that our products are used as effectively and safely as possible." With words such as unique and innovative often used to describe the company, it comes as no surprise that they were called on by the Bloodhound team to find a solution for the heavy lifting of the car used to attempt to break the land speed record. “The bloodhound project really does demonstrate the versatility and portability of our lifting equipment,” says Luke. Whilst built and engineered in the UK, the land speed record attempts are all

"We were asked to come on board to provide bespoke gantry lifting systems," explains Luke. "Bloodhound LSR needed tall, portable gantry lifting solutions which it could use at its construction and technical centre and take to testing locations around the world. Initially, these needed to be capable of lifting the upper chassis and a 1.5-ton Rolls Royce EJ200 jet engine normally found in a Eurofighter Typhoon fighter plane, but over time the requirement has extended to lifting the whole vehicle." Delivering value Lifting solutions also had to be easy to assemble and transport, as well as being customisable to

suit the rapidly changing demands of the project. Having originally ordered a 1996kg lifting system with a 14' 11" long beam and integrated CMCO Yale 300 chain block via an approved reseller, the Reid team have become partners in the project and these days are intrinsically involved in the lifting solutions for the project. “The solutions have had to be portable as the facilities in the workshop could not accommodate an overhead crane. Thanks to the portagantry’s versatility to be able to accommodate various heights of lifts and beam lengths it allowed for a single gantry to be used for various lifting challenges.” The gantry showed it's worth proving to be exactly what the Bloodhound team were after. This led to further demand and Reid now supply a port gantry system with a 3000kg lifting capacity. “This custom built gantry has a chain-free, rope controlled system for movement of the trolley and wind-up jack legs for uneven ground and load spreading for use in the desert testing location.”

Both gantries were used during the race at Hakskeen Pan last year when the vehicle reached an incredible 628mph (1,010km/h) - the equivalent of driving the 1400km from Johannesburg to Cape Town in just one hour and 23 minutes. “Being able to ship the gantries to South Africa allowed the team to utilise the same lifting solutions in the field,” said Luke. “Key to the success of the partnership has been Reid’s ability to work closely with the Bloodhound team as the project has developed. For instance, before the South African run, they needed to test the hinges on the hydraulic doors which form part of the vehicle’s braking system, alongside a parachute and braking on the wheels.” “Reid was able to supply tackle and gantries which enabled the team to test weights on the hinges of up to 5 tonnes and replicate the forces they would face.”

HARBOUR CRANES

Looking towards the future The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority recently took delivery of new Liebherr mobile harbour crane technology. The port is already successfully operating two LHM 280 for bulk handling operations for many years and is now preparing for future challenges. A new LHM 550 will allow TLCPA to handle bigger grabs and heavier project cargo goods. • Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority (TLCPA) is operating two LHM 280 for many years and recently upgraded its crane fleet • A new Liebherr mobile harbour crane type LHM 550 is operational at the port since summer and will contribute to further growth of TLCPA • The new machine allows TLCPA to operate bigger grabs and opens them to the business field of heavier project cargo Rostock (Germany), September 2021 – The Port of Toledo is predominantly industrial and is one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes. Toledo is a city in Lucas County in the northwest of the US state of Ohio, located southwest of Lake Erie. The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority has been in charge at the port since 1955. Since 2010, two LHM 280s have been in operation at the Port of Toledo. Both cranes are primarily 28

Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

used for bulk handling. TLCPA is very satisfied with the performance of the cranes and especially appreciates the reliability of the two machines. To be able to serve its customers more quickly in the bulk-handling sector in the future, a new and much more powerful Liebherr mobile harbour crane of the type LHM 550 has been ordered. The LHM 550 is equipped with a 4.80 metres tower extension and a 54 metres boom for best reach. With a maximum lifting capacity of up to 144 tons, the new crane can use much larger grabs and thus handle more bulk material in a shorter time. In addition, the significantly higher payload, compared to the two existing machines, opens up the possibility for the customer to handle heavier project cargo in the future. Investment in future growth “The investment in a third mobile harbour crane creates a more efficient cargo handling performance at the Port of Toledo

that results in shorter lay times for cargo vessels,” said Thomas Winston, President and CEO of Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. “The new crane means further growth for us, not only in the bulk sector, but also in the project cargo business sector. In addition to increasing performance, the LHM 550 is an eco-efficient crane that has a Tier 4 final emissions standard and a highly efficient hydrostatic drive.” Shipment by SAL The new machine was transported in a disassembled state from Rostock, Germany to Toledo, USA. The heavy-lift carrier "Imke" of the SAL shipping company transported the crane over 4000 nautical miles to Toledo, Ohio. At the port of Toledo, the crane was then assembled, tested, and handed over by experienced Liebherr service engineers.

TELEHANDLERS

FS 7.32 Compact, next generation of Faresin telehandlers Veneto previewed the FS 7.32 Compact, the first of the new FS range of Faresin Industries telehandlers. Faresin has chosen to do so broadcasting in “Closed Room” mode from a hangar at the Breganze plant. A minimalist yet high-tech live video entirely focused on the technical and functional contents of the new product. A multi-voiced story that saw as its protagonist the FS project team led by President Sante Faresin and by his daughters Silvia and Giulia, respectively Vice President and Operations Manager of Faresin Industries.

A true paradigm shift with an eye to the future, because the range was created ready for the integration of new developments in "IoT" technology, which is becoming increasingly strategic for fleet management and manmachine interaction on farms and construction sites. FS 7.32 Compact was designed from scratch to respond to the evolution of demand and the growing environmental awareness in all sectors. A true "systemic" response

that brings FS 7.32 Compact to the top of its sector as it impacts on all the main functions of the machine, focusing on the operator, the connection between the vehicle, its management and functional and assistance control. The FS 7.32 Compact project is the result of 20 years of experience in the telescopic sector and relies on an industrial system where Research and Development, Production and MarketingCommercial work in a single integrated process that puts the customer at the centre of everything. All the structural components of the new machine, including the sophisticated software that manages the integrated sensors, were designed, tested and manufactured at the Breganze plant. A Made in Faresin technology that is revolutionising the sector and that has already attracted global attention with the introduction of the first fully electric handler worldwide. The new FS 7.32 Compact will be presented to the general public at Eima International

TELEHANDLERS

in Bologna, where visitors will be able to learn more about this technological gem first-hand. New livery and functional design FS 7.32 Compact comes with a new design that started from a Faresin R&D idea and was developed in collaboration with prestigious specialist firms and cutting-edge partners exploiting executive technology. The goal was to create a distinctive product, which combines exceptional performance with a captivating style that only Made in Italy can create. For the FS range, the livery was also completely redesigned to mark the change. With the Faresin red identifier that stands out on the new cowlings, the Faresin grey boom is the same as the under bonnet and mudguards, which have also been revised. The ennobling silver-grey has been retained on the sidebands bearing the model name and on the rims. The characteristic element of this livery is the "scratch", the white mark that runs along the rib of the bonnet to emphasise its profile while at the same time assuming the role of a distinctive feature. The markedly tapered inclination on the right front wheel of the bonnet sets a new level of visibility for telehandlers. The result is an appealing, yet the unprecedented design that sculpts an original and innovative driving position with unparalleled visibility combined with clean and decisive lines. FS 7.32: the first of a new species The first model of the new FS Range is the FS 7.32, a compact telehandler with 3.2 tons maximum lifting capacity and a maximum lifting height of 7.1 metres. The further characterising data are a steering angle of 37° which, together with the turning radius of only 3.8 metres, for a machine with a wheelbase of 2.95 metres, make this a high-performance machine with unique agility and with equally important stability. Available in two versions, the standard one and a lowered "Low Cab". With only 2.06 metres at the highest point of

the cab, this version is destined to become the ideal machine in many operational situations. In summary, FS 7.32 is a telehandler designed to respond with the versatility to the daily needs of off-road handling in all possible sectors of use. Engines with higher performance and lower consumption Designing with a focus on the future also meant thinking about reducing environmental impact, lowering consumption and, at the same time, improving performance. There are five engines available for the FS 7.32, all 4-cylinder Deutz from 2.9 to 3.6 dm3, water-cooled with power ratings from 55.4 kW to 100 kW. All comply with Stage V emission regulations with after-treatment technology using oxidation catalyst (DOC) or urea (SCR) and particulate filter (DPF). All the engines are common rail, turbocharged, with intercoolers to meet the variable power needs linked to specific uses with optimised torque curves for high performance and rapid availability of power with low consumption. In addition, maintenance intervals of up to 1,000 hours result in a significant reduction in operating costs. We also paid attention to safety with the introduction of the "AutoStop" which turns off the

engine when the operator gets up from the seat and then switches it back on again, also autonomously, upon return. Solutions that add fuel savings to the operator's protection. The hydraulic cooling fan automatically adjusts the rotation speed according to the temperature, reversible and electronically controlled, combines perfect temperature regulation with reduced consumption and represents the definitive solution for use in dusty environments. The optimisation process of the spaces under the bonnet has achieved an efficiency of the air flows, also favoured by the new grids. In addition, the new layout of the engine and radiant units guarantees convenient access to all maintenance checkpoints. Transmissions for every use All versions of the FS 7.32 are equipped with Ecodrive hydrostatic transmission, an advanced solution capable of providing the power delivered according to the driving mode to obtain the most effective use of power with a consistent reduction in consumption and emissions. Two transmission solutions differ in the number of ratios and maximum speed: a single gear with a speed of 0-30 km/hour for the Dynamic set-up. The twospeed mechanical gearbox allows reaching a maximum speed of 40 Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

TELEHANDLERS

km/h while enjoying a reduced ratio for tasks that require greater traction. This solution is present in the Performance and Excellence versions. The differential can also be chosen based on the intended use of the machine. There are two solutions available: axles with 45% limited slip automatic differential lock and an advanced solution with 100% hydraulically operated differential lock. The latter allows the FS 7.32 to tackle any terrain in absolute safety and with full traction control. Intelligent hydraulic system The hydraulic oil circuit adopts the same design logic to provide solutions for each user using a modular system. There are two solutions for the hydraulic oil circuit: gear pump or variable displacement piston pump, therefore in load sensing. The hydraulic part is the real muscle of the machine as it is oversized to guarantee versatility of use with flow rates from 120 to 180 litres/ min, depending on the set-up, capable of ensuring rapid work cycles. The highly efficient flowsharing distributors guarantee excellent multifunctionality and, with the introduction of the innovative electronic management

system, there is simultaneous programmable control of several boom actions. The efficiency of the system is enhanced by the presence of the Ecofast valve which regenerates the oil coming out of the cylinder during the descent of the boom, improving the movements of the boom even at low speeds with significant savings on fuel consumption. The same logic was adopted with the regenerating valve which optimises the outreach times by reusing the oil coming out of the jacks. Their combination is programmable by the same operator through FS Display or FS Selector. Ergonomics, comfort and visibility The designers have revised the interior of the cab making it a true flagship. The position of the controls has been completely redesigned to make their use more intuitive, becoming an outstanding feature of the cab. The result is a harmonious and pleasant arrangement of the controls, grouped by functional logic on a dashboard that has been completely revised in terms of layout and colours. The steering wheel is adjustable in height to adapt to the operator. All information is now gathered

in the FS Display, a 7-inch, antireflective colour touch screen, positioned on the right-hand mast. The engine operating parameters, load charts and other accessory functions such as the cab radio, air conditioning controls, headlight control, etc. are now visible in a single position. The driver's seat with multiadjustment pneumatic suspension is fitted with the FS Joystick on the right armrest which brings together the control commands of the telescopic boom. Quick movements on the uneven or rough ground are made safer by the integrated armrest. Switching between screens and the changing of settings takes place directly on the FS Display or through the FS Selector, an intuitive wheel control system, also positioned on the armrest. In the compartments of the console, there are two USB sockets as well as several compartments in which to conveniently store various objects including a bottle-holder. The result of the new cab is a pleasant, tidy, comfortable, safe work environment, with 360° visibility to the outside. The new line has significantly reduced shadowy areas, thereby improving safety. The ventilation and heating system from the cab with 4? adjustable vents represent a powerful demisting system; the air conditioning system also provides the operator with maximum comfort even in very dusty external conditions. Two large rear-view mirrors offer wide visibility and the lighting system is provided with an LED solution. Everything has been designed to provide unique operator comfort. Access to the cab is facilitated by a comfortable and safe platform with a courtesy light and an internal LED dashboard that is activated when the door is opened.

Shackles and the lifting industry are synonymous Utilized for all types of lifting and rigging operations the role of the shackle is pretty significant. With this in mind, much time and effort go into research and development at Green Pin that has added to their range of products by introducing the fixed nut shackle. Lifting Africa finds out more. Fears of accidentally releasing a load when it is under dynamic load or when exposed to extreme vibration is real, says Roan Retera, general sales and marketing manager at Green Pin. “Sometimes, shackles are also used in more permanent constructions. These can then also be subject to dynamic loads and/or extreme vibrations. In such applications, there is a risk that, over time, the nut starts moving over the thread. To avoid this risk Green Pin have extended their range of products and now have a fixed nut shackle available.:

According to Retera, the fixed nut can be fitted into just about any type of standard bolt and nut shackle. A wide variety of Green Pin’s shackle range, including its standard, Polar and Super shackles, can be equipped with an extra AISI 316 securing bolt that is drilled through the nut and shackle pin. This securing bolt is fastened with two sets of Nord-Lock washers and a securing nut. This, says Retera, will keep the shackle nut in position. The NordLock wedge-locking washers lock when subjected to extreme vibration or dynamic loads.

There are several benefits to using fixed nut shackles. "It offers triple safety," he explains. "A safety bolt split pin and a fixed nut are in place. It is perfectly suited for all dynamic loads or where extreme vibration is experienced. It is also suitable for very heavy lifting up to 175t WLL.” Emiel van Norel, product manager at Green Pin, says the fixed nut application is also available as heavy-duty, sling and wide mouth shackles. How it works The process in itself is extremely simple, says Van Norel. It requires a standard shackle that a hole is drilled into and secured with a bolt and washers. “The Nord-Lock washers are critical components to our fixed nut shackle solution,” he says. The company created the original wedge-locking technology that secures bolted joints, even when exposed to severe vibration and dynamic loads.

36

Lifting Africa - Sep/Oct 2021

“Previously securing required adhesives, tab power or locking wires – all of which were very dependent on the operator, were time-consuming and required special tooling. With the NordLock wedge lock system, this is no longer the case. It is unaffected by lubrication; untightening is quite simple and it remains tight regardless of the conditions.” These washers were therefore the optimum choice to secure the fixed nut shackles. Van Norel explains that the washers have to be used in pairs on the shackle nut. “Never use a single washer to keep the bolt secured. The through-holes require two pairs of Nord-Lock washers to keep the bolt secured when tightening the nut.”

nut shackle together. “The shackles are standard from the Green Pin shackle ranger. The fixed nut part is outside the loadbearing part and so the original shackle maintains all of its certifications.” Applicable industries While the fixed nut shackles can be used in a wide variety of applications, they are particularly popular in use with grabbers be it transporting waste to a waste plant, moving sand or rocks from the sea bottom or off-loading cargo from a ship, a process that is particularly violent and hard on equipment in its own right. “These fixed nut shackles can easily withstand these heavy-duty operations and are particularly beneficial to use in areas where there is a high risk of the shackle breaking,” says Retera.

“Another popular application is for floating objects at sea where due to the movement of the waves the shackle is constantly moving. A lot of movement under harsh conditions can be problematic, but not with the fixed nut shackle.” The fixed nut shackles have also proven to be useful in applications where there is a lot of hammering taking place such as foundation piles being hit into the sea bed for example. “There are many situations where these fixed nut shackles prove to be very beneficial and can save time and cost in one’s operations,” concluded Van Norel.

Green Pin, sales@vanbeest.eu, www.greenpin.com

Lubrication free

Tension, he says, makes the bolt self-locking. The pair of washers also expand more than the corresponding pitch of the thread. The key is the difference in angles. According to Van Norel, assembly is not difficult. Easy to follow and use instructions come with the product. “In short, other than always using the washers in pairs, one pair is under the head and one pair under the nut. Do not use any other washers or filling places. Finally, fasten the bolt to the recommended torque.” The shackle pin and fixed nut belong to each other, adds Retera. “They cannot be interchanged with other shackle bodies. Once inserted the various components can also not be removed or replaced. It is manufactured as a unit and designed as a set. There are no spare parts that can or must be replaced and under no circumstances does one put the pin in a different body or vice versa.” No specialized tools or equipment are required either to put the fixed
