APSDA News
Changing strategies in challenging times South Africa was in trouble well before Covid-19, down grading to junk status, recession pressures, lock down, no new artisans stepping up to the plate and qualified personnel in the industry getting few and far between. With all of us having to get use to social distancing it’s been tough to find the right training personnel, the regulations and safety protocols makes it hard to get things going again to more-or-less where we were before lockdown. We at Southern African Pump Systems Development Association (SAPSDA) have already started training for your staff at lower costs and with the correct safety protocol. We are diversifying our training to include practical training that is driven toward the end user. This is where our experienced members have the opportunity to share their expertise at a low or no cost to the trainees, reducing course cost. The addition of MERsita accreditation to our courses will further add value. With each member joining Southern African Pump Systems Development Association (SAPSDA), it expands the networking opportunities for the rest, whether individual members or companies. We want to reduce the value of the costs to be a member and create a platform for the end user to get valued training in the industry as well as to create mentorship programs for people who enters the industry. While abiding by the Covid-19 rules, we have had our first Introduction to Pumps Training Course in

Women in the Industry Challenges faced in the pumps and valves industry Import versus Local manufacturing is always at the forefront of difficulties local manufacturers face but the seriousness the government has shown on this issue is to be applauded. Another challenge the industry faces is the lack of skilled workers in the pumps field. This is why I support training and upskilling in our industry. Something that few people know about you That I sing most of the time while I work. The few who do know were very shocked to have experienced it. Management style It is a mix of democratic and authoritarian, tailored to suit the individual. Personal Best Achievement Overcoming my fear of confined spaces. My fear was so great, that at 8 months pregnant, I took the stairs of a building for 11 floors to avoid the elevator. Overcoming that has been a great accomplishment to me. Women in the Industry Setting the course for diversity & inclusion in Africa’s water industry • Provide D&I events that include Xylem Africa’s customers, suppliers, partners and communities. These include gender-based violence awareness, International Women’s Day, Heritage Day, breast cancer awareness, and distributor events in Africa around female participation Create Africa Awareness sessions on D&I to people managers, including health awareness for females
Xylem Africa is proud to share its Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) goals for 2020 and beyond. As we celebrate women in August, it’s a good time for individuals and companies to consider how they support and celebrate diversity in the workplace. This matter sits close to the spirit and soul of Xylem, where through our water projects, we routinely impact lives, work with communities and experience first-hand the importance of celebrating differences. “We will not be the most innovative company if we do not create a diverse and truly inclusive environment where people feel they can bring their authentic self to work every day,” said Patrick Decker, Xylem’s global President and CEO. Xylem Africa’s D&I goals Africa is a diverse continent with many unique people, hosting many microcosms of D&I where different people work together to realise their futures collectively. Xylem Africa has developed its D&I goals to celebrate this spirit of cooperation and potential: Create gender parity in all occupational levels, currently, we have approximately 90% of our goal • Create gender parity in all occupational levels, currently, we have approximately 90% of our goal • Aim for the numerical goals of Xylem Africa’s threeyear employment equity plan to address our diversity disparities, including people with disabilities • Recruit diverse candidates on final shortlist, with diversity defined on a country basis • Achieve a 10% increase in previously disadvantaged employees • Create a workplace female leader group
"Diversity and inclusion are not about Xylem Africa's image," said Jeanette Greenwood, HR Director for Africa at Xylem. "It's about how we achieve our successes. Homogenous teams start well, but because they are so similar, they soon run out of creative ideas for new solutions. The challenges and requirements surrounding water demand new ideas, often at a very grassroots level. D&I is a critical part of delivering the best services and solutions wherever we operate on the planet. The D&I goals from Xylem Africa will bring us closer to that." Touching real lives Women play a crucial role in Xylem Africa’s operations. Lynette Mkwebo is building a solid career as both a knowledge expert around legal metrology - standards of weights and measures, etc. - and as an invaluable team member thanks to her high-quality work and natural motivation of others. A single mother, she joined Sensus, a Xylem subsidiary, in 2013 as a cleaner and soon became interested in meter testing and other water-related activities. Lynette has been involved with water metering for over four years as a qualified Verification Officer in Legal Metrology, and has been working directly at Xylem since 2018: "There is always a very large water demand and, in turn, there is a massive shortage of fresh drinking water in South Africa. All in all, water is a basic need for all. Women grew up believing that working with water was a field for men. But it's high time now we stand and work hand-in-hand with them, giving each other advice." Ngwakwana Enocentia Molife is another rising star at Xylem Africa. Before joining Xylem as a general assistant, she had worked in retail and earned a qualification in Travel and Tourism supply changes. Five years later, Ngwakwana is today one of Xylem’s top assemblers and testers of meters, and she places a lot of personal pride into her work: “It feels good to know that you are a valuable person
• Gender-diverse management teams generate 48% higher operating margins (McKinsey) • Diversity Inc.’s top 50 companies outperform stock performance by 25% (Diversity Inc.) • Gender equity can add US$12 trillion to the global economy (McKinsey) Yet these changes do not happen naturally. For example, the World Bank’s Water Global Practice found that less than one in five water workers are women, and women are underrepresented in technical and managerial positions, On average, only 23% of licensed engineers are women. “There has been progress in the water industry, but this is only the beginning,” said Vincent Chirouze, Xylem’s Regional Managing Director for Africa.
in the community, because of what we are doing for our communities. I’m from a small village where access to water isn’t easy. But water is the basic ingredient of life that everyone needs to have. l make sure that my meters are 100-per cent well made."
“Our purpose at Xylem is to positively impact communities by helping make sustainable and reliable clean water available to everyone. But you can’t help everyone if you don’t include everyone. It’s a team effort, and we will continue to make diversity and inclusion a core part of our mission.”
She added that perseverance is the mother of success, and all women must stand up for themselves: “It’s 2020, the year of leadership. We should make sure that we are the leaders of our families. Let’s fight for our opportunities!” This spirit of empowerment resonates across Xylem’s workforce, from our professionals on the ground to senior managers and the executive. F or Tariro Shuro, Operations Manager at Xylem Africa, water and women can both be powerful agents of change in Africa: “What do women and water have in common? That’s an easy one! We’re all sources of life. I strive continually to bring clean water to the communities in Africa, and I encourage women out there to do the same. Happy women’s day!” The argument for D&I The merits of diversity and inclusion are becoming more indisputable through empirical data. According to the Scout Report, Gender Equity Starts With Hiring 2019, highly inclusive organisations generate 2.3 times more cash flow and 1.4 times more revenue per employee and rate themselves 170% better at innovation. Evidence from other sources corroborate the positive impact of D&I:
As we celebrate women this August, Xylem Africa is reaffirming its journey towards true diversity and inclusion.
• Diverse companies are 35% more likely to outperform their peers (McKinsey) • 85% of CEOs with D&I strategies say it’s helped performance (PwC)
Through our 2020 D&I goals, and by continuing to support the careers of ambitious people such as Lynette, Ngwakwana, and Tariro we are helping build a more inclusive Africa that provides water for all her people. Xylem, +27 (0) 11 966 9311, Chestan.Mistry@Xyleminc.com, www.xylem.com
Weir Minerals launches accumin™ lubricators to optimise Warman® pump performance
PUMPS
Weir Minerals has announced the global launch of its Accumin™ lubricators, following international demand for the superior-quality grease lubrication which has been ensuring optimal performance for equipment such as Warman® slurry pumps in APAC since 2014. Across more than 100 sites, the Accumin™ lubrication system has proven itself an efficient way of preventing expensive bearing assembly failures. It reduces maintenance downtime and promotes safety by decreasing the amount of manual interface to keep equipment performing. “At Weir Minerals, we make the market-leading slurry pump for mining applications, but we can’t always control what happens when it gets to site. Between dust, overflow and gland seal leaks, lubrication is a vital tool in the constant battle to keep the machinery going,” Michael Roinich, Accumin™ Specialist at Weir Minerals, says. Having an Accumin™ lubrication system fitted prevents over and under greasing, protects equipment from bearing failures and frees up man-hours for more critical tasks.” “When we offer Weir Minerals equipment with an Accumin™ lubrication system installed, what we’re doing is giving that equipment its best shot at a long and productive working life,” he says. Made in Germany, Accumin™ canisters are produced in 125cm3 gas driven, 120cm3, 250cm3 and 500cm3 electromechanically driven configurations and can be deployed up to five metres away from the lubrication point, allowing easy and efficient access to the mount.
12
Pipes, Pumps and Valves Africa - Jul/Aug 2020
The electro-mechanical driven lubricator dispenses a consistent dosage of lubricant, regardless of ambient temperature. The system delivers 6 bar of operating pressure and can be easily monitored via an LCD, flashing LED alert system and a transparent grease cartridge. “Designed to meet the arduous demands of the mining industry, Accumin™ single-point lubricators set the global standard for lubricating Warman® pumps and other greaselubricated, mission-critical mining equipment supplied by Weir Minerals. We’re excited to share our market-leading, best-practice system with mines around the world who are embracing new technologies to simplify their operations,” Roinich says. Making the move to Accumin™ lubricators helped an Australian iron ore mine to save almost AU$120,000 each year in downtime reduction, pump rebuilds and bearing assembly replacements. Accumin™ lubricators are now available worldwide on new pumps, through Weir Minerals’ aftermarket spare parts supply channels and via our unrivalled service centre network. Selecting the right hygienic pumping solution
PUMPS
The food and beverage industries remain important contributors to the manufacturing and fastmoving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors, as well as the local economy. However, food and beverage manufacturers are some of the most highly regulated (and penalised) businesses – and rightly so, given the impeccable standards of process and product quality, and safety, that must be maintained to protect consumers and end-users. Added to this, modern consumer tastes and corporate retail demands for new flavours, fashions and fads have created a demand for ever-greater quantity of product lines. This demand runs somewhat contrary to the operation of traditional dedicated process lines where there is one piperun for one product. Previously, if a company wanted to produce more lines of products, they needed to build more production lines, recommission an existing line or suffer downtime cleaning and turning around a line in operation. However, modern production facilities - particularly in food and beverage production - have moved from a dedicated production line for each product to an innovative multiproduct line which could be processing several different foodstuff, liquids or slurries every day. This has placed a lean, flexible manufacturing process as the engine of a successful operation – and the process needs to be consistent and reliable to accommodate perishable ingredients, storage, short-lead times for retail clients and, of course, maintain a safe and hygienic production line. This process also needs to be repeatable, ensuring the quality of each batch, to maximise on outputs and minimise on waste and potential losses. As a result, production efficiencies and product quality remain key performance indicators for food and beverage processors. There are however challenges with the multi-product line approach that every production line manager will 14
Pipes, Pumps and Valves Africa - Jul/Aug 2020
invariably face. For instance, deciding on how best to manage the transition of one product to another when using the same line for batch production. A potential hazard to a multi-product line approach is crosscontamination, which can result in spoiled product, shorter shelf-life, production downtime and risks to employees during the cleaning process. Additionally, a multi-product line can increase the exposure risk to microbes, which present an ever-looming threat to food and beverage manufacturers. This has also been compounded by the current consumer trends in food, as the sector has seen an increase in favouring fresh, flavourful, easy-to-prepare foods, with little sugar, salt, and less to no preservatives added, which makes it difficult to keep microbes out of the food. With the above in mind, being able to produce high grade safe and quality food and drink products – with every batch - requires machines that are 100% reliable, meet today’s hygiene standards and can handle products with care. A tall order, but in reality – and when the quality of the product can directly impact the safety, experience and buying behaviour of the customer, which directly impacts the bottom line, then – there can be no shortcuts. Directives from the European Hygienic Engineering Design Group (EHEDG) – which have been accepted and are widely applied across related industries in South Africa - are aimed at setting universal standards that are founded on sciencebased knowledge in the hygienic engineering and design of food and beverage production equipment and facilities. As an example, a core aim of the EHEDG standards is to prevent contamination of consumable products – and directly related to this, one of the major directives from EHEDG states that every part of the production line should be accessible for cleaning.
PUMPS
The cleanability requirements – including, clean in place (CIP) and sterilisation in place (SIP) - to meet hygiene standards alone present several challenges for processors, and particularly those operating multi-product lines. With a modular design, however, there is a great opportunity to address many of the challenges presented by a multi-product line and the cleanability requirements. For example, modular design to the production line can allow processors to add, remove, change out or undertake maintenance to machines and equipment on a production line with minimal disruption, which also means less downtime. Taking this a step further, and at the heart of maintaining the highest levels of hygiene standards means selecting fit-for-purpose hygienic pumping solutions that have been designed and built to eliminate any risk of contaminants during production. For example, throughout the production process, there are many areas where hygienic pumps with a modular design can be integrated. Such solutions allow for ready disassembly, cleanability and reassembly. Additionally, when reviewing the production line,
processors should consider speciality twin-screw pumps that were designed for reliable pumping - from low to high viscous, volatile or gaseous products – across multiple applications and fulfil the utmost hygienic and efficiency requirements according to the highest hygienic specifications such as EHEDG and 3A certified manufacturing processes. In the food and beverage industries, processes must be reliable, repeatable and error-free – and integrating the right equipment is critical to maintaining this sustainably. We understand that navigating the technical obstacles of selecting the right pumping solutions for specific applications can be complex. Food and beverage processors, therefore, need to look to a trusted and reputable brand that can offer not only a wide range of pumping solutions but solutions that are long-lasting, cost-effective and efficient – because they are 100% fit-for-purpose for the application. Custom jetting trucks make for satisfied customers
PUMPS
The ability to build high-pressure jetting and vacuuming equipment to match customers’ specific needs ensures they get exactly what they require, proudly manufactured in South Africa. This is what Sebastian Werner, MD of Werner Pumps, leading South African design, manufacture, supply and maintenance specialist in high-pressure jetting equipment, believes differentiates the company from its competition, among other things.
we get customer sign-off on the designs before we start manufacturing. We run a production schedule that is updated regularly so that if a customer wants to purchase a unit, the lead times and estimated date of completion can be discussed."
“Our units are fully customisable, and we are always willing to adapt to our customers' needs," he says. "For example, we can offer fully electronic units, which means that the jetting or vacuuming operator can work with a wireless remote. The owner of the truck can then also see everything remotely, from how many hours the unit has worked, to when maintenance is required. That means it's easier to plan, avoid downtime and ensure trucks are always in tip-top condition."
Once a unit is ordered, Werner Pumps keeps customers updated on the progress at regular intervals to aid in planning, and also has a rental unit available, which customers can hire while they await delivery of their vehicle.
Werner Pumps offers an in-house design service to facilitate the customisation process. Designers work on CAD programs to help customers visualise their unit as it's designed. With Werner Pumps' more than 30 years of experience, the team can assist customers in creating exactly what they need. "Our designers are present when a new customer visits our factory," explains Werner. "The customer meets our team and see how we design and plan to build a unit. Any questions by the customer are answered and

Mobile pumps prove their value The mobility of trailer-mounted pumps has earned them a reputation for versatility and efficiency, according to Integrated Pump Rental.
PUMPS
The company’s range of Sykes pumps in mobile configuration has seen enthusiastic take-up in markets varying from large open pit mines to construction sites. Sykes product specialist at Integrated Pump Rental, Henru Strydom, says that the company has even embarked on the local manufacture of these units.
Next in the range are high head (HH) pumps, which can pump to a height of between 70 to 150 metres, while the medium head (MH) pumps can reach heads of between 50 to 90 metres.
“Mobile pumps can deliver real economy through their ability to be moved where and when required,” says Strydom.
The contractors’ package (CP) range comprises the smaller units which can be pulled by a bakkie or 4x4 vehicle. These are also licenced for travelling on public roads.
“With their own wheel-base, it means that no infrastructure needs to be built before they can start working. They can also be moved quickly in an emergency.”
The robust, auto-priming Sykes pump range has features that protect against overheating or low oil levels, optimising uptime and ensuring low maintenance requirements.
This applies not only to small units on roadworthy trailers, but to large dewatering pumps for deep, open pit mines. In a recent contract, Integrated Pump Rental locally manufactured a mobile version of its extra-high head Sykes XH150 pump for a diamond mine in the mountains of Lesotho. “This model can dewater a mine’s pit to a depth of 250 metres,” he said. “The pump can run at full load for up to
18

Encompass optimum drive configurations to ensure optimum performance of mechanical speed control for specific applications, in almost every industry “NORD drive solutions, which meet stringent local and international quality standards, are known for reliability, energy-efficiency, low noise levels, extended service life and reduced maintenance,” says Deon Crous, National Product Specialist, NORD Drive Systems, Electromechanical Drives division, BMG. “These modular drive systems incorporate advanced drive technology and special design features, to meet the exact requirements of every operation. In the processing sector, for example, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS are engineered with reinforced bearings and increased bearing spacing, especially for agitators, pumps and mixers used in process plants. “Reinforced and larger output shaft bearings allow the gear unit to absorb high radial and axial bearing loads that occur during the agitating process. An important benefit of this design is the extended service life of the gear units.” To enhance efficiency, an agitator version (VL2 bearing) with increased bearing spacing and reinforced bearings, as well as a drywell version (VL3) with an additional oil drip plate and leakage or oil sensors, are available from BMG. The bearing spacing of VL2 and VL3 versions is increased with attachments, while the gear unit size remains unchanged. Advantages of large oversized output bearings include quick assembly, large-bore capacities, high radial load capacity and extended service life. Modular NORD DRIVESYSTEMS is easy to expand or upgrade, using a minimum of different types and sizes of components. The local assembly enables prompt delivery of drive systems and the ready availability of spare parts. Included in BMG’s NORD range are drives for torques from

Vesconite Hitemp 150 used in condensate pumps Condensate pumps can get very hot. They are used in industrial steam systems to collect and return steam to a boiler for reuse. This is why when a large energy company in Africa required lineshaft and bowl bearings for condensate pumps at its 4,000 MW power station it turned to Hitemp 150, an engineered polymer produced by Vesconite Bearings, that can survive temperatures up to 150°C (300°F). The condensate pumps in question reach temperatures of 110°C (230°F), so the contractor to the power producer is satisfied that the pumps will last and that the bearings will not melt, as would be the case with many other polymers. An order for machined items and stock hollow bar was dispatched in June 2020 and the machined items were due to be installed soon after receipt. The remaining stock items are to be machined by the contractor and were to be installed soon after the initial installation.
Vesconite Bearings pump expert Charlie Simpson estimates that the large order will be used in four pumps each measuring about 10 meters in length. The company dispatched three different bearings sizes for shaft diameters of 50 mm (2") as well as three different sizes of the stock hollow bar, weighing 90kg in total. “Hitemp 150 is an ideal material for pumps in temperaturechallenging environments,” says Simpson. The polymer, which is typically red in colour, has a shortterm temperature limit of 170°C (340°F), a temperature rating of 150°C (300°F), and a resistance to hot water and steam of up to 120°C (250°F). and HSZ3.75SL models are ideal for applications where customers need to dewater faster so they can get onto the job site quicker, such as construction and utility jobs, and in disaster remediation, when time is crucial,” said Glenn Wieczorek, managing director of Tsurumi America.
The new pumps offer a maximum flow rate of 140 GPM and a maximum total dynamic head of 12 metres (40 ft), with a motor input of just 0.75 kW. Compact and lightweight, they are easy to transport and operator friendly. Low maintenance is another strength, as the pumps' wear parts are built from highly durable materials. The shaft incorporates Tsurumi's original agitator to prevent airlock, as occasionally seen in vortex pumps and semi-vortex pumps, and to stir slurry efficiently. The difference between the two models is that the HSZ3.75SL contains a simple float switch-equipped automatic sensor to prevent dry-running operation and to reduce power consumption. It automatically stops running when not needed, which makes it appropriate for night-time operations and construction works in dense residential areas. "At Tsurumi, we are always looking for ways to offer the best solutions to meet our customers' needs. The HS3.75SL and HSZ3.75SL pumps were designed with that in mind," Wieczorek said. “And, of course, they have Tsurumi’s high standards of quality and reliability. You can’t find anything similar in terms of performance and design out in the marketplace.”
Tsurumi has unveiled the highest-flow versions of its best-selling HS Series pumps: the HS3.75SL (manual) and HSZ3.75SL (automatic). Designed to handle high volume drainage at low head, these new, submersible models pump roughly twice as much water as the high head model HS3.75S. This means customers will be able to save time and money in dewatering applications. “Our new HS3.75SL

Stainless steel pump solution for Namibian mine The harsh coastal conditions at a mining operation in Namibia demanded a dewatering solution beyond the ordinary, so it turned to Integrated Pump Rental. Its remote location, combined with its highly corrosive environment, meant that the mine needed its equipment to be wear-resistant and require minimal maintenance.
PUMPS
According to Steve du Toit, rental development manager at Integrated Pump Rental, its solution, in this case, was enhanced by customised design. “Our Sykes diesel-driven pumps come standard with stainless steel internal wear-parts, but for this particular application we included a stainless steel volute – for a full stainless steel pump,” says du Toit. “Also, we constructed the entire pump set out of grade 316 stainless steel at our facility in Jet Park.” The company designs and engineers its pump sets in-house according to customers specifications, and in line with mining safety standards. For this project, therefore, stainless steel was also used for the integrated fuel tank, the drop discharge pipework, the single-point lifting frame and the engine mountings. With its efficient working practices and established supply chain, the pump set was supplied to the customer within five days of the order being received. The work and handover were carried out during South Africa’s hard lockdown in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Integrated Pump Rental was active during this period as an essential service provider to the mining sector.

“Our local manufacture by experienced professionals ensures a cost-effective product that is built to the highest standards,” he says. “It also assures customers that our support and maintenance is similarly world-class.” The Sykes CP150 pump set boasts a maximum flow of up to 172 litres per second, pumping heads of up to 60 metres, with a solids handling capability of 77 mm. It is driven by an 83 kW Perkins diesel engine, a popular model in the mining market which is easy to maintain. “The Sykes pump set can be towed behind a light vehicle, so mines can easily move it in and out of a pit as required,” du Toit says. “Where towing is not possible or permitted, the unit can also be lifted without the need for qualified riggers. Its single-point lifting lug allows the balanced unit to be conveniently lifted with one sling.” It can also be skid-mounted if it is not frequently moved, or mounted on a road trailer for ease of movement on public roads. Mechanical pipe systems offer cost and time savings to a struggling construction sector There is no disputing that the COVID-19 pandemic has and will continue to have a devastating impact on the South African construction sector.
PIPES
According to the construction market intelligence firm Industry Insight, the impact of COVID-19 on the sector will result in it shedding an estimated 120 000 to 140 000 formal jobs. The commercial building sector is under extreme pressure to not only contain costs but to ensure they meet construction deadlines despite delays incurred by the nationwide lockdown. For new and current commercial developments, innovative technologies and solutions that decrease con-struction times, limit labour costs, and prove more versatile will be particularly important to con-tain costs and ensure timely delivery. Marcel Ley, Victaulic Regional Manager for South Africa, says grooved mechanical pipe joining systems are one such solution to the previously mentioned challenges identified. They offer an alternative to the use of flanges or welding to connect piping systems and drastically reduce the time necessary to install and maintain these connections. In commercial buildings – such as of-fices, shopping centres or mixed-use developments –piping systems are installed for heating, cooling, plumbing and fire protection. Ley continues, using grooved mechanical pipe joining
32
Pipes, Pumps and Valves Africa - Jul/Aug 2020
systems can have a significant impact on construction schedules. “Contractors are always under pressure to finish a project in time and unplanned stoppages can put increased pressure on schedules and budgets- as we have seen over the last few months. Victaulic can relieve some of this pressure through quicker installa-tion.” Victaulic's grooved mechanical pipe joining system requires fewer and less-skilled workers, therefore further reducing installation costs. "With no fire risk there is no need for costly fire watch manpower or fire shielding, tanks, torches and potentially dangerous lead lines, thus dras-tically decreasing the health and safety risks on the job site. You also need fewer people working on-site for a shorter period, which in itself reduces health and safety risks," explains Ley. Grooved technology is especially suited to commercial building projects as it can easily accom-modate changes in the scope of the project. Unlike a welded system, a grooved mechanical pipe joining system can easily be taken apart and the same parts can be reassembled. The initial in-stallation of the Victaulic system is about five times faster than welding, but when welded sys-tems need to be
reworked, the Victaulic system can be ten times faster. Victaulic Vibration isolation pump drops can also be optimized to reduce the number of joints done on sites. Pump rooms can benefit from this practice and field joints can be reduced from 30 on-site connections to only 4 connections with Victaulic solutions. This not only reduces time and risk on site but also ensures that joint integrity is maintained. Yet there is still a widely held perception that coupling technology can only be used temporarily. It must be stressed that this is not the case. Victaulic offers a permanent solution that lasts the lifetime of the pipe system.

The couplings arrive on the site ready to be installed and don't require disassembly before installation and can just be pushed on a piece of grooved pipe, valve or fitting. Additionally, the fact that the joint integrity can be visually verified to confirm its validity eliminated additional checks and rework. Originally estimated to require two full weeks to complete the system by welding, Victaulic QuickVicTM couplings helped to com-press the assembly to 19 hours – nearly 75% savings in installation time – and 1½ weeks ahead of schedule. 20 Big Flowrox valves have the flow under control
VALVES
Flowrox pinch valves PV 500 E01 are successfully controlling the sludge flow in a Polish wastewater plant. Twenty electrically actuated valves were delivered in 2011 to Poland through Danish engineering company KrĂźger A/S and Flowrox representative Scanrox A/S. Czajka is one of Europe's biggest wastewater treatment plants situated in Warsaw, Poland. The plant can process wastewater of 2 million people. Area of the plant is 1,2 km wide and 800 metres long which equals the size of 74 football fields. After six pre-settling tanks there are ten aeration pools where the main biological process takes place. Each pool is seven meters deep and contains 37 225 m3 of the medium. After aeration pools the wastewater is pumped to the secondary settling tanks where the biological sludge settles to the bottom. From there, it flows to the collection chambers through DN700 stainless pipes. Just before the chambers, the pipes are coned down to DN500 to fit the valves.

Flowrox valves are controlling the sludge flow which must be as slow as possible to prevent mixing of the medium. From the collection chambers, the medium is gently pumped back to the starting point of the process as the mass contains the cleaning bacteria. Flowrox valves have been working without any problems since commissioning. Not even a single sleeve has been replaced in 9 years of operation. The end customer, as well as the engineering company, have been very satisfied with the operation of the Flowrox valves. Flowrox, +27 (0) 10 590 8374, sales-rsa@flowrox.com, www.flowrox.com
GEMÜ develops new motorized control valve The semiconductor industry places stringent requirements on valves, measurement and control systems. Pneumatically operated valves are to an increasing degree no longer able to comply with the control requirements of leading process equipment manufacturers.
VALVES
For this reason, valve specialist GEMÜ has developed the motorized GEMÜ C53 iComLine control valve. The 2/2-way diaphragm globe valve GEMÜ C53 iComLine was developed for precise and demanding control applications in semiconductor production. The sealing concept of the valve is based on the triedand-tested GEMÜ PD design, with actuator and medium separated by a regulating cone made of resistant PTFE. As the regulating cone contour, actuator stroke and connection size can be customized to meet customers' requirements, the GEMÜ C53 iComLine satisfies virtually all control and flow requirements of the high-tech semiconductor industry. Thanks to the combination of the precise stepper motor with ultra-pure body materials, the valve is particularly suitable for lithography, CMP and etching processes, as well as applications in the analysis field of any semiconductor production process. The GEMÜ C53 iComLine diaphragm globe valve cannot only be installed as a simple 2/2-way valve. It can also be integrated into a GEMÜ PC50 iComLine M-block to realize complex flow charts using minimal space.
For example, when machining silicon wafers, a multi-port valve block can be used in a FOUP cleaner to control the temperature of the DI water. Also, check valves and sensors can be integrated into the GEMÜ PCi50 iComLine M-block. GEMÜ Valves Africa Pty. Ltd, +27 11 462 7795, info@gemue.co.za, www.gemu-group.com

Selecting the right valve goes beyond understanding the function it needs to serve. It’s also important to factor in cost efficiency, durability and maintenance considerations.
In some cases, according to Lionel Maasdorp, MD at Allmech, leading South African manufacturer of boilers and supplier of water treatment components, switching from a solenoid valve to a ceramic ball valve can help to cut down on costs, while improving performance. “Various industries, including water treatment and agriculture, make use of ceramic ball valves for a multitude of applications, usually where the demands on the valve exceed the capacity of conventional valve materials,” says Maasdorp. “The high-performance nature of ceramic valves means they often have a greater tolerance for wear resistance, corrosion, and high temperatures than many other types of valves. However, even within the category of ball valves, there are different types available for specific purposes. The Runxin ceramic ball valves that Allmech supplies are cost-effective, durable, corrosion-resistant, efficient and low maintenance." For this reason, many Allmech clients are choosing to switch to ceramic ball valves from solenoid valves where possible. While the diaphragm in a solenoid valve may collect dirt as liquid moves through it, ceramic ball valves don’t have a diaphragm, meaning they are less prone to dirt build-up inside the valve.
Furthermore, in sensitive environments or where minimal wastage is an important operational requirement, ceramic ball valves can provide a better option as the design of the valve means the ball core and seat are precisely ground in pair to ensure there is no leakage. In contrast, solenoid valves are prone to seepage and blockages and need to be closely managed for leaks. Maasdorp says that ceramic ball valves are ideal for many water-related applications, including water-saving systems, industrial automatic control systems, automatic small application sewage systems, environmental protection projects, water supply and drainage, food and water treatment, and irrigation systems.
VALVES
“The electromagnet used in the solenoid coil to move or lift the internal stainless steel armature assembly also often produces a water hammering effect on the surrounding pipes when the valve is opened or closed,” says Maasdorp. “In manually operated ball valves there is also a risk of water hammer with fast-flowing media, but automated ball valves like the Runxin electronic and time-controlled models slow the closing mechanism down and prevent water hammering.”
"Ceramic ball valves have many important factors that make them an excellent choice for robust applications," he says. "They are cost-effective, low maintenance, durable and their self-balancing design lowers torque and makes for smoother operation." The ceramic ball valve also has the advantage of small flow resistance, good corrosion resistance, good wear resistance and long lifetime, making it an excellent option for inclusion in an industrial system. Resiliency: Water treatment plant uses innovative technology to protect the local ecosystem In 2016, the Zeeland Clean Water Plant in Michigan moved forward with plans to double its capacity from 6 million litres (1.6 million gallons) per day to over 11 million litres (3 million MGD). The utility saw the expansion as an opportunity to upgrade ageing equipment with innovative, more sustainable approaches, including solutions from Xylem’s Sanitaire, Flygt and YSI brands. Expanding capacity and removing nutrients more sustainably Maintaining efficient aeration was a key challenge for the treatment plant. In wastewater treatment, bacteria are used to biodegrade waste and nutrients. The right levels of oxygen are needed in the wastewater to ensure the bacteria can do their job, but aerating the water is energy-intensive. The Zeeland plant had been manually operating their aeration system, which when combined with inadequate mixing capabilities, resulted in over-aeration and wasted energy. To meet these challenges, the city contracted with Moore & Bruggink to provide construction engineering services for a major upgrade to the clean water plant. They engaged Xylem to design a complete Sanitaire CASPERON solution. CASPERON is an activated sludge process that eliminates the use of lime and the volume of biosolids. It includes Sanitaire Silver Series II membrane disc diffusers, aeration systems for the aerobic tanks and a digester, six Flygt 4410 mixers and two Flygt 4630 mixers.

Pipes, Pumps and Valves Africa - Jul/Aug 2020
As part of the CASPERON solution, the Zeeland Clean Water Plant was also upgraded with a Sanitaire OSCAR performance optimizer control software and hardware system, with dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonium, nitrate and phosphate control, which is used with Xylem’s treatment equipment to help a plant meet its desired performance and operating budget goals[1]. The CASPERON solution also enables the Zeeland Clean Water Plant to have a treatment process that is environmentally-friendly and saves the community electricity costs. Adding automation The expansion project included the automation of the aeration system to increase efficiency. The adoption of online instrumentation has dramatically increased the dissolved oxygen measurement functionality. Modern online instruments are capable of measurements at a frequency, accuracy and reliability suitable for process control at a reasonable cost. The strict control of dissolved oxygen (DO)is required to create the conditions necessary to achieve biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Adding automation at the Zeeland facility has improved process performance, and minimized energy consumption and chemical usage throughout the plant. Ongoing
resulting in effluent total phosphorus concentrations consistently below 1 mg/l with minimal to no chemical addition.
To support real-time monitoring and control, YSI IQ SensorNet instruments were installed in the basins, including dissolved oxygen probes and VARiON ionselective electrode sensors, which measure ammonium, nitrate and potassium.
Since it began operation in 2017, the digester aeration system has also delivered significant energy savings of more than R240,000 ($22,000) per year and considerably reduced the total volume of biosolids residuals to be processed.
The sensor control zones take readings and speed up or slow down the removal process to maintain optimum oxygen levels.
At a 30 percent Volatile Suspended Solids reduction, that equates to 342,210 lbs. of solids per year that no longer need disposal, which in turn has reduced the amount of lime needed to stabilize the biosolids.
Now, plant staff can remotely control significant parts of the facility minimizing the need to access the system hands-on or come in during the night to address a problem. They can also monitor energy usage and identify conservation efforts. Advancing environmentally-friendly impact With the new installed solutions, the expansion allows the Zeeland Clean Water Plant to receive and treat an additional 4 million litres (1.1 million gallons) of wastewater per day from Zeeland and Holland townships. Now, 8 million litres (2.2 million gallons) of wastewater flow through the plant daily. Due to the OSCAR control system, which automatically controls blower speed and operation and maintains stable dissolved oxygen concentration, the plant has experienced improved total nitrogen removal and reduced energy consumption and wear on the blower. Also, the controller optimizes the process for biological phosphorus removal,
The plant has realized a savings of R514,000 ($47,000) per year in lime costs, as well as R219,000 ($20,000) per year decrease in biosolids hauling costs compared to its previous system. Aside from energy efficiency, Zeeland Clean Water Plant superintendent Doug Engelsman said more precise aeration control has resulted in more efficient use of staff.

monitoring of plant processes has resulted in estimated cost savings of R268,000 ($24,500) per year for the City of Zeeland.
The installation of reliable, efficient equipment also has improved the quality of the effluent and provided a major reduction in chemical use

Pandemic disruptions an opportunity for Africa to reimagine cities The need for social distancing and better sanitation could leapfrog African city development into a more sustainable future. This is according to Duncan Bonnett, Director Market Access & Research at Africa House, and research partner of exhibition organiser Messe Muenchen South Africa, who says that while Africa’s architects and planners have long been pushing for greener, smarter better designed urban spaces, the Covid-19 pandemic may help fast-track moves to better living spaces. Speaking ahead of the bauma CONEXPO AFRICA trade show, Bonnett said: “The pandemic has certainly caused delays and disruptions across construction and infrastructure development, but there are some silver linings for the sector, and for Africa as a whole.” These, he said, included a new need for the realignment of developments such as commercial and hospitality spaces, the reconfiguration of retail developments and the reimagining of towns and cities. “We could see redevelopment and remodelling of spaces, the development of new warehousing and logistics hubs as e-commerce really takes off; and the growth of retail distribution infrastructure closer to outlets and consumers,” he says. ” Another opportunity lies in the complete redevelopment of urban spaces in South Africa and across Africa,” he says. “The pandemic is highlighting how difficult it is to maintain safe social distancing and ensure water and sanitation for townships and informal settlements, for example. This is an opportunity for investors, governments and private sector to reconfigure how Africa lives – reimagining housing, green spaces, sanitation, power, and the work environment to ensure that both urban and rural spaces are resilient to disruption such as pandemics.” The growth of urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa has accelerated in recent years and this growth is expected to pick up over the next 15 years, Bonnett says. “Donors, investors, governments and developers have been striving to improve living environments, but Covid-19 may sharpen minds around a more coordinated approach to developing sustainable, safe settlements.” “In the same way as much of Africa leapfrogged telephony progress and went direct to smartphones, we now have an opportunity to develop new urban areas that are sustainable, environmentally friendly and resilient to disruption. This shock to the system could push us in the right
42

direction to develop better integrated, smarter cities.” Bonnett says Africa has much to learn from international best practice and pan-African forays into sustainable cities and infrastructure. “This is the time to have the conversations and stimulate thinking around how we do this. Events like bauma CONEXPO Africa can play a key role in creating the linkages and getting processes going, so that the future-proof, sustainable African city is not just a theoretical concept.” Suzette Scheepers, CEO of Messe Muenchen South Africa organisers of bauma CONEXPO AFRICA, says new approaches, technologies and construction materials can underpin Africa's efforts to reimagine urban development. "Despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic, the development will continue, and new opportunities will emerge across the continent. At bauma CONEXPO AFRICA, thought leaders from around the world and across Africa have an opportunity to assess new approaches and forge new partnerships that can support the development of the African cities of the future,” she says. bauma CONEXPO AFRICA, sub-Saharan Africa's Leading Trade Fair for Construction, Building Material, Mining, Agriculture & Forestry Machines, Machinery and Vehicles, will be staged in Johannesburg. bauma CONEXPO AFRICA, +27 (0) 11 4768093, bca@mm-sa.com, www.bcafrica.com
