Why submersible pumps rise above the rest in fluid handling

Submersible pumps have long been a staple in the world of fluid handling and pumping, with their presence becoming more pronounced, especially in particular applications like sump pumping, wastewater management and numerous industrial processes. Ruaan Venter, Rental Development Manager at IPR, says that while engineers have various solutions at their fingertips submersible pumps often stand out especially when compared to vertical spindle pumps. So, what gives these submersible devices their edge? “First and foremost, submersible pumps are known for their superior energy efficiency,” Venter says. “This elevated efficiency not only makes them outperform their vertical spindle counterparts, but it also leads to significant cost savings in the long run.” Space is often at a premium in many dewatering setups, and this is where submersible pumps have the upper hand. Their direct placement in the fluid they handle means there is no need for extended piping or additional external infrastructure. This innate compactness becomes a boon, especially in locations where space is tight. Maintenance is also a recurring concern in any wastewater, mining or industrial environment and Venter says that submersibles come out on top here as well. With fewer moving parts than vertical spindle pumps, which often come with aboveground mechanical setups, submersible pumps are less prone to wear. This reduced wear translates into more dependable performance, ensuring a smoother operational experience. Fluid handling is the core of any pump, and submersible pumps excel in this domain. Venter explains that due to their fully submerged operation, these pumps are essentially immune to issues like cavitation or airlocks, which sometimes plague vertical spindle pumps. This

submerged state ensures a consistent and smooth pumping process, offering significantly enhanced reliability. “But it's not just about efficiency and reliability. Submersible pumps also promise a quieter operational experience. Their underwater functioning naturally dampens sound and curtails vibrations, offering a noisefree solution,” he continues. Moreover, submersible pumps are stalwarts when it comes to reliability, even in challenging environments. Their underwater operation shields them from many external factors, ensuring they last longer and operate with unwavering reliability, even when conditions turn hostile. But what if the fluid isn't clear water? Submersible pumps have got that covered too. They are adept at processing an array of fluids, even those riddled with abrasive solids. This versatility makes them an excellent choice for varied tasks, be it sewage or other wastewater pumping applications or dewatering in intricate mining operations or sumps in buildings or other structures. Safety is paramount, and submersible pumps don't skimp on this aspect either. Their positioning underwater diminishes risks linked with rotating parts and potential leaks, issues that are often more glaring with above-ground pumps. In today's age, where environmental consciousness is key, submersible pumps rise to the occasion. Many can be customised to avert fluid leaks, ensuring they operate with minimal environmental impact, adhering to contemporary ecological regulations and sustainability goals. Lastly, their design boasts flexibility. Depending on the depth requirements, these pumps can be adapted, ensuring a fluid handling system that aligns perfectly with specific operational demands. HOW TO AVOID COMMON FAILURES IN PLAIN BEARINGS Plain bearings are o�en used in intensive applica�ons because of their ability to operate for a long �me under heavy loads and their low maintenance needs, even in harsh operating condi�ons. Despite this, their resilience doesn’t mean that they are immune to failure and some of the common causes of plain bearings failures include metal fa�gue, misalignment, localised rapid wear and trapped dirt forming grooves in the bearing components. However, there are ways to prevent even these ‘common’ failings from happening. Colin Ford, MD of Lubrica�on Engineers (LE) South Africa explains that the correct lubrica�on is one of the most important ways to mi�gate plain bearing failures. “Even though plain bearings don’t necessarily have complex lubrica�on requirements, the use of quality lubricants can prevent many of the common causes of bearing failures,” he says. Poor lubrica�on, including insufficient lubrica�on or using the incorrect lubricant can appear in a plain bearing as rapid wear, o�en in one spot, un�l the surface completely breaks down. “An experienced lubrica�on consultant can help iden�fy the correct lubrica�on solu�on for an applica�on and plain bearing component to prevent this,” says Ford. The right size for each applica�on The large bearing area on plain bearings means that they are able to carry heavy loads. However, Ford says that the right size bearing also needs to be selected for each applica�on and that they should have the proper clearances, supported by good lubrica�on. “When these factors are in place, plain bearings can be be�er than an�fric�on bearings for carrying heavy loads or shock loads,” he adds. To get the most out of plain bearings, bearing surfaces should be completely separated by a film of lubricant. Most plain bearings will rapidly get ruined if this film wears out. When the bearing is moving and correctly lubricated, fric�on decreases to almost the low point of an�fric�on bearings. Misalignment is another cause of failure in plain bearings as it can cause disfigurement. Although it can some�mes be difficult to iden�fy as the source of the fault, misalignment between a journal and sha� is usually easy to see. When studied closely, the wear pa�ern will reveal a skewed or unbalanced pa�ern. Some�mes a thrust load is also indicated. “This can be mi�gated by using the correct lubrica�on to support any oscilla�on without it turning into long-term misalignment,” says Ford. Foreign material and dirt can also cause bearing failure when par�cles create grooves in the so�er bearing alloy. “The tracks are plainly visible either as large, long straight grooves, or as smaller par�cle tracks that wander. Lots of small, hard par�cles will cause mul�ple small, straight scratches, o�en resul�ng in excessive wear. If the foreign material is large or hard, it may become embedded. Lubrica�on is an excellent solu�on for preven�ng this problem because by nature it traps and removes dirt from the bearing system,” explains Ford.

Mitigating pump maintenance challenges in wastewater with condition monitoring

Wastewater treatment poses numerous challenges for operators and system managers, ranging from regulatory compliance to ageing infrastructure and managing maintenance costs. Pipes, Pumps & Valves Africa looks at how advanced condition monitoring can revolutionise maintenance practices and mitigate potential risks in wastewater treatment. Wastewater treatment facilities encounter various challenges, including regulatory compliance, ageing infrastructure, managing maintenance costs, energy consumption, water consumption, an ageing workforce, and safety concerns. Among these challenges, the reliability of critical equipment, especially pumps, emerges as a focal point due to its pivotal role in the wastewater treatment process. According to Paul Keough, global industry leader for water and wastewater at A.W. Chesterton, pumps, motors, and valves are indispensable components throughout the wastewater system. They facilitate the movement of fluids through various treatment stages, from the collection system to solids treatment. “The reliability of pumps is paramount, considering the potential environmental, residential, and financial impacts of unscheduled pump shutdowns,” he says. Understanding pump failures According to Keogh, understanding the leading causes of pump failures is crucial. “Seals, accounting for 69% of failures, are the most common component to fail. However, it’s essential to recognise that 90% of seal failures result from system issues outside the seal itself. Factors like process temperature and pressure changes triggered by flow restrictions or valve regulation alterations can contribute to seal failures.”

Other common causes of pump failures include bearings (10%), static joints (9%), hydraulic issues (3%), and coupling problems (2%). Environmental controls and proper seal function are crucial in preventing failures, emphasising the need for condition monitoring. Importance of condition monitoring Condition monitoring, explains Keogh, is a proactive strategy to ensure the reliability of pumps in wastewater treatment. Accessing real-time operational data from apps or the cloud becomes invaluable, especially with a retiring skilled labour force. With approximately 25% of the workforce expected to retire in the next seven years, utilising condition monitoring tools can bridge the knowledge gap, reduce human error, and enable a proactive approach to maintenance. Using the example of a plant in the US where pump failure saw the facility swamped with more than 55 million litres of untreated wastewater, Keogh said it underscored the importance of condition monitoring. “Reliability of pumps is important, but it is not enough to just run a pump in its prescribed operating envelope.” Ryan Zepp, global product line director for IIoT solutions at A.W. Chesterton, says there are multiple factors, many of which are not detected in the early stages, that can cause a seal to fail.


Several prevalent factors include fluctuations in pressure on the suction and discharge sides of the pump, directly impacting the pressure and temperature within the seal chamber, commonly referred to as the stuffing box. These variations directly influence the mechanical seal, affecting its performance. A comprehensive insight into the pump’s status can be obtained by monitoring both process pressure, temperature, and vibration. This approach aids in identifying abnormal conditions early on, preventing failures, and ultimately enhancing operational uptime.

Another benefit is that it delivers increased equipment reliability. By identifying potential problems early, condition monitoring increases pump reliability and extends equipment life. It also enhances safety as proactive maintenance reduces the risk of accidents and ensures a safer working environment. “There are also benefits from a Return on Investment (ROI) point of view,” says Keogh. “While investing in new technology, it’s crucial to understand the return on investment (ROI). Although initial costs may increase, the

What actually is a positive displacement pump?

A pump that falls into the category of displacement pump, also known as a positive displacement pump or rotary pump, operates on a fundamentally simple working principle. When the pump starts, it first draws in, captures, and confines a fixed amount of liquid. In the next part of the pump cycle, the pump forces the liquid towards an outlet. This creates a positive displacement of the liquid which explains the name of the pump principle. When the pump operates at the same speed, the same amount of liquid enters and exits the pump, making a displacement pump highly accurate in delivering a given volume of liquid in industrial applications.

Different types of positive displacement pumps There are many different types of displacement pumps that employ various working principles. The fundamental principle of creating a “positive displacement” of the liquid remains the same, but as you can read below, this displacement of liquid can be achieved in several different ways. Reciprocating pump Perhaps the simplest type of pump available on the market. These pumps utilize a reciprocating motion to capture and move liquid. One example is a piston pump. Peristaltic pump Also known as a hose pump, has an electric motor connected to a shaft equipped with rollers or shoes. When the pump starts and rotates, the roller/shoe compresses a hose, creating a vacuum that draws in the liquid. The liquid is then pushed towards the outlet as the next roller or shoe passes over the hose. A hose pump is often used to pump viscous and abrasive fluids, while smaller variants are popular for dosing and sampling purposes. Rotary pump These pumps utilize a rotating element (such as a gear, lobe, or vane) to capture and move liquid. Examples of this type of pump include the lobe pump, which utilizes two intermeshing lobes. A lobe pump is commonly used in food manufacturing as well as in applications where gentle handling of the liquid is important. Screw pump Pumps that utilize a screw-like element rotating to capture and move liquid. Examples include the eccentric screw pump and twin screw pump. Impeller pump An impeller pump operates by deforming a flexible impeller

inside the pump housing, creating a vacuum to move the liquid and create a smooth flow to the outlet. This principle allows for gentle pumping while maintaining excellent suction capabilities. Diaphragm pump This pump utilizes one or more flexible diaphragms to capture and transport liquid. The diaphragm pump is a versatile pump that is suitable for various applications, including pumping corrosive or abrasive fluids in the chemical industry, as well as liquid transfer in environments with strict hygiene requirements in pharmaceutical and food manufacturing. What are the advantages of a positive displacement pump? There are several reasons to choose a positive displacement pump if you are looking for a reliable pump. Here are some: Can be used for dosing As mentioned earlier, the positive displacement pump has a high level of accuracy when it comes to delivering liquid at a constant flow rate. At a given speed, the amount of liquid remains the same in each pump cycle, allowing you to calibrate your pump to always deliver the right amount of liquid for your application. Gentle pumping The different working principles of positive displacement pumps, which in one way or another displace a quantity of liquid before moving it forward, create some turbulence. New submersible pumps in discharge tube for a wide range of applications

KSB Group launched on the market a new submersible pump in discharge tube with open multi-vane impeller. The type series has been named AmaCan D. Its main application is transporting large volumes of municipal or industrial water as well as waste water from stormwater, drainage and irrigation pumping stations. When selected with optional corrosion-resistant and abrasion-resistant materials the type series can also be used in water pollution and flood control or in seawater aquaculture systems. The pump generates a maximum flow rate of 8000 m3 per hour and a maximum discharge head of about 30 m. The highest motor rating available as standard is 340 kW. Priorities set by the developers were to achieve a high operating reliability of the waste water hydraulic systems as well as high hydraulic efficiencies. Here, they were focusing on the typical operating ranges of submersible pumps in discharge tube. The outer design of the pump sets has been shaped by the pump manufacturer’s decades of experience with specifically this type of pump. The pump’s self-centring, non-positive seating in the discharge tube, sealed by an O-ring, makes it easy to install and remove. No anchoring or anti-rotation elements are needed. Integrated, intelligent sensor monitoring detects any vibrations or leakages and measures the temperature of bearings and motor. It provides continuous supervision of operation and early detection of malfunctions as well as the option of predictive maintenance. With regard to low electricity consumption, the drives of submersible pumps in discharge tube also play a key role. 14

This is why all electric motors are of an efficiency corresponding to class IE3 for standardised motors to IEC 60034-30. This is particularly important for powerful pumps with a high frequency of starts. Two bi-directional mechanical seals reliably prevent water ingress into the motor space. A chamber filled with environmentally friendly oil ensures cooling and lubrication of the mechanical seals even when gas-laden fluids have to be pumped. Generously dimensioned ball bearings sealed for life support the stainless steel shaft. Special focus was further placed on the design of the cable gland. Individual conductors stripped, tinned and sealed in resin ensure that the cable gland is absolutely watertight. Even in the event of damage to the cable sheath or the insulation, thanks to this design the pump is protected against short circuits. To ensure that the pumps can be easily dismantled even after years of operation under tough conditions, all wetted screwed connections are made of high-grade stainless steel. Seal-less pumps work in polymer injection

A US specialist in enhanced oil recovery systems required pumps for a polymer injection facility in a Wyoming oilfield. Seal-less diaphragm pumps were selected for the 24 hour facility. Their ongoing long-service performance and gentle handling of the polymers led to additional pumps being installed to extend the facility. Low-shear pumping action, responsive control and reliability were critical considerations for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) systems specialist Nalco FabTech when designing and installing a 21 pump polymer injection facility for a Wyoming oilfield. Looking beyond the established plunger-type pumps in general use for polymer injection, the company turned to an alternative, seal-less Hydra- Cell G25 diaphragm pump manufactured by Wanner Engineering. Six years later, the pumps are still running 24 hours a day and additional Hydra-Cell pumps have been installed to extend the facility. Each pump is individually controlled to match varying conditions within its own well. Based in Casper, Wyoming, USA, FabTech operates worldwide as designer, fabricator and installer of purposebuilt process equipment for oil and gas production. Development of customised injection plants is a key activity. Handling polymers Polymer injection plays an important role in enhanced oil recovery. EOR is usually the tertiary stage of an oil field and occurs after primary production and water flooding. Polymers are used to improve the viscosity and distribution of the injection water by contacting previously bypassed oil and improving field recovery. However, the same chemical

properties which make the polymer viscous, also make the polymer difficult to dissolve and pump. Proper handling of the polymer solution is imperative. Preventing degradation due to shear, through pumps and pipes, as well as degradation due to chemical incompatibility with brines, is of paramount concern. The sensitivity of the polymer solution imposes limits on the type of pumps that can be used. Even some typical designs like centrifugal, gear, and screw pumps are not suitable for this type of chemical EOR. Prior to 2004, almost all polymer injection plants built by FabTech incorporated triplex plunger pumps. The Wyoming contract, in which liquid volumes and pressure rating were within the range of the Hydra-Cell H25, allowed the company to give serious consideration to an attractive alternative. The H25 can operate anywhere in the range up to 70 bar, varying flow as required between 1 l/min and 69 l/min. A distinctive feature of the Hydra-Cell is that there are no dynamic seals or closetolerance moving surfaces in the design. Smooth, low-pulse pumping action is achieved by the sequential flexing of multiple hydraulically balanced diaphragms within a single compact head – while the diaphragms totally isolate pumped fluid from the drive parts of the pump, which operate submerged in lubricant.

Moreover the design minimises internal friction, reducing heat input into the system and further ensuring that the injected liquid reaches its target in effective condition. Seal-less design has implications for the service life of the pump and life cycle costs, by removing the most common cause of premature wear and consequent loss of performance. But equally significant for FabTech on the injection application is the low shear pumping action of the HydraCell, protecting the polymer from degradation. FabTech executive Rick Binks admits that his company did not take pump performance claims on trust. “We had to design for pumping a viscous solution containing 800 ppm of high molecular polymers and up to 350 ppm of soda

ash (Na2CO3). Not until we had run shear degradation tests with the Hydra-Cell pump in the lab did we move to the next stage.” Controlling pump flow and pressure was not complicated. Output of the Hydra-Cell pump is directly related to its speed, and virtually independent of system pressure. So a relatively simple system using VFD to vary motor speed gives accurate flow control with fast response. Following the success of the Wyoming plant, FabTech has installed injection plants with Hydra-Cell pumps in Canada and Oklahoma, while additional pumps incorporated in the Wyoming plant include a larger HydraCell model, the H35. Working principle of rotary lobe pumps The working principle of rotary lobe pump is based on positive displacement of liquid from the suction area, by lobes rotating, to the outlet port. The lobes are mounted on parallel shafts, which are driven by external timing gears located in gear casing. As the rotors rotate, they increase the volume of the space between them, creating partial vacuum on the suction port side (fig. 1). This causes pumped material flow into the pump body. The pumped liquid is transported inside the pump’s body (fig. 2 and fig. 3) to the discharge port of the pump (fig. 4). When the volume of the space between the lobes decreases, it causes an increase in pressure on the discharge side and consequently the liquid is pushed out of the pump body - fluid flows into discharge pipeline.

Why include water in your sustainability strategy? Water is likely already a part of your sustainability strategy. After all, it’s a utility with an associated cost, and every responsible business will track that cost.

Yet, even at that level, most companies treat water with broad strokes and don’t gain the advantages of a more nuanced water management strategy. Fortunately, it’s something they can start harnessing quickly. A sustainable business model needs sustainable business practices. At the foundation of its strategy, a business should generate more than it spends in input, so it tracks materials, staff hours, maintenance, and several other cost centres. Utilities are a vital part of this; for example, many companies have had to hone in on electricity management to defer the adverse effects of loadshedding. Water also falls under this management view because it is a vital part of business operations. Running taps and working toilets, cleaning, dedusting, cooling machinery, and even community relationships depend on a company’s relationship with its water usage. However, many organisations still treat water bluntly and with little granularity. Ultimately, this undermines the benefits they could get from their water supply and puts them at the mercy of rising costs. The water situation will become more serious, leading to scarcity and higher prices. South Africa is a water-stressed country with uneven rainfall, and our water ecosystems have sustained serious damage that leaves many rivers, dams, wetlands, and aquifers polluted and in a critical state. Rapid urbanisation and climate change are making water even scarcer. If companies do not apply a water management strategy with sustainable water practices, water will become a vast yet irreplaceable cost centre. Any leader or investor who cares about a sustainable and efficient business should include good water

management—and those who don’t will because water ecosystems are under stress everywhere. The United Nations has warned that by 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population will live in water-stressed countries. Water sustainability practices are becoming joined at the hip with sustainability in business. But this topic is not just about the negative consequences. Good water conservation and stewardship deliver benefits, such as cost savings, improved brand reputation, and stronger stakeholder relationships. What can leaders do to improve water management at their organisation? Start with a water audit to know where it’s going and what the most critical water requirements are. Monitor water usage at these key points, and consider efficiency gains such as low-flow taps, energy-efficient washing systems, and cut-off valves at strategic points. Invest in water recycling and use local plants to maintain water-friendly gardens. Even simply collecting water data into a cloud-based water management platform will provide significant strategic levers. Water goes beyond operations. Educating staff about water pays big dividends to your business, and they take those water stewardship habits home into their communities. Nearby communities also benefit as your business includes environmental issues and clean water availability as part of your business strategy. There is still time to phase nuanced water management into your sustainability. Soon, it will become an imperative and late movers will have less choice and opportunity. By 2050, poor water management could shrink some GDPs by 6 percent. A water crisis can create serious recessions. But let’s not focus on fear. There is opportunity, based on extensive industry knowledge and digital technologies. Unlocking effective dewatering: mastering fundamental solutions With every mine or quarry site needing to evaluate dewatering requirements at some point, it is important to determine the exact nature of potential water problems to inform the design of a fit-for-purpose dewatering solution.

Marnus Koorts, General Manager Pump Products at Weir Minerals Africa, advises that for every dewatering project it is important that the customer works with an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that understands the environment, site conditions and specialises in dewatering solutions. In any mining environment, water comes from several sources, with rain being the most prolific in some regions. However, other sources such as natural seepage and aquifers can yield a significant amount of groundwater, especially in underground mining operations which can lead to considerable disruption of operations with costly consequences. A comprehensive, reliable and flexible dewatering plan is therefore essential to remove excess water from working areas in order to allow operations to continue while safeguarding operators and maintaining productivity. Several factors are worth considering before selecting and installing a dewatering solution, and this should start with a thorough assessment to facilitate the design and build of a fit-for-purpose dewatering solution that is site-specific, cost effective and manageable. “Each operation’s dewatering

requirements are different,” says Koorts. “Consequently, we believe that dewatering solutions should be customised to suit the site conditions. At Weir Minerals, we don’t supply a dewatering solution without first going to the site to assess the different parameters that determine an optimal solution for the operation.” Another critical factor to consider is the head pressure required to pump the water out of the pit. Many of the pits are very deep, which means additional booster pumps are needed to overcome the large vertical lift. Based on the mine site configuration and whether an open pit or underground operation, these could be positioned at multiple levels to help raise the water.. “The characteristics of the water can have an impact on the final equipment and materials used. For example, the pH range, temperature, corrosive and abrasive content all play a critical role in selecting the equipment to transport water effectively. The presence of solids in the water, the specific gravity, size distribution and content percentage will determine the type of pumps required,” he says. In addition, Koorts notes that there is an industry perception that dewatering is just about the pump itself. He, however, cautions that a pump is only one part of the equation with a dewatering systems comprising numerous critical components including pumps, drive units, priming systems, control systems, control valves and discharge piping. “It is critical that the preferred dewatering system OEM be able to integrate all these various components into a single system. They integrate into established equipment such as SCADA software, Advanced Metering Infrastructure and Automated Meter Reading. They should also support established and future sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and incorporate historical data. How quick is the user training? If it takes months of training before staff and partners can use the data systems, you are wasting your time. Training should happen within weeks, based on an operations-aligned change management strategy and backed by additional information sources and self-learning opportunities. Are there consolidated and customisable dashboards? Generic dashboards won’t cut it; the system must offer


customisable dashboards that consolidate different data sources. These dashboards should be secure yet accessible on multiple devices and shareable between authorised users. Automatically on course for success The current challenges for the valve industry are manyfold – more than ever, competitive pressure, the energy crisis, supply chain risks, sustainability and the growing shortage of skilled workers call for effective solutions now. But there is an effective way to make these hurdles more manageable with the help of automation. Automatically successful – this could work especially today. Automatically on course for success – more and more companies are relying on this: The automation of industrial production will continue to accelerate due to new technologies and vendors, according to an analysis by McKinsey & Company. The market for industrial automation will therefore grow by almost four percent annually to over US-$ 115 billion by 2025 soon. Exploring the multifaceted offerings of Steinmüller Africa Steinmüller Africa, a leader in high-temperature and high-pressure steam generation and piping in South Africa , traces its roots back to 1962 when its only presence was a post box. Executive Director Moso Bolofo, initially the Director of Engineering and Business Development, has achieved success during his tenure at the company. Below is an examination of the company’s offerings and his achievements. Steinmüller Africa’s prides itself on its cutting-edge technologies, positioning itself as a frontrunner against current and potential competitors. These technologies align with its vision to establish Steinmüller Africa as the preferred supplier for managing steam generation and reticulation plants in sub-Saharan Africa. The company’s solutions encompass explosive welding, induction bending, automatic welding, and numerical analysis. Below is a succinct overview: Induction bending: Precision bending of straight pipes, even for custom or large radius bends, is accomplished using the Cojafex PB 850 induction bending machine, one of two in Africa. It is capable of bending pipes with diameters from 48.3mm to 850mm, a wall thickness of up to 100mm, and create bends of up to 180 degrees. Numerical analysis: Steinmüller Africa supersedes competitors with its in-house numerical modelling and analysis capabilities, accurately assessing fluid dynamic behaviour in boiler systems, heat exchangers, and boiler auxiliary equipment. Explosive welding: The company offers explosive welding, a unique method for fusing materials, even dissimilar ones, resulting in high-quality welds on high-pressure parts and pipelines. For over six decades, Steinmüller Africa has serviced steam-generation, processing, and reticulation plants across diverse market segments. These include power

generation, chemical and petrochemical, mining and steel beneficiation, pulp and paper, and nuclear industries. Career highlights Bolofo’s career at Steinmüller Africa has been marked by significant achievements, such as the completion and opening of the Majuba power station, capable of generating 4,110 megawatts. The company also successfully de-mothballed the Simunye stations, including Camden, Komati, and Grootvlei power stations. They further secured a four-year boiler and HP piping contract at eight Eskom power stations, which commenced in January 2022. The contract contributed to the retention of 600 jobs and will help create an addition 2 400. The opening of Steinmüller Africa’s 30 000 m2 Pretoriabased workshop and the re-establishment of complete boiler manufacturing capacity, which marks higher temperature/pressure piping capability in South Africa, also took place within Bolofo’s tenure. The future In the medium term, the company’s aim is to diversify its client base as well as its service offerings. This entails exposing new clients to its existing products while expanding its new product selection, such as heat exchangers, for example, for new and existing clients. Steinmüller Africa plans to target new industries, taking its offerings to a broader market. The company has a strong focus on maintenance projects and the life extension of existing plants. The development of independent power producers presents another opportunity for Steinmuller Africa to set up new plants. Recently, Steinmüller Africa was involved in enquiries for the supply of concentrated solar power plants in the Northern Cape. This means that any steam-using operation in the solar industry is also a potential new client. Over the short-term, the company is set to exceed customer expectations in executing its four-year boiler contract in the power generation sector and aims to secure the next installment of this massive contract. P/T plugs are installed in valves and are used for measuring pressure and temperature. The P/T plugs are designed for flowmeters or pressure meters using needle system.

The ALPHA range of flow limiting dynamic balancing valves has been developed for use in a wide range of applications for the accurate and efficient distribution of flow in heating and cooling systems.

The SIGMA Compact is an externally adjustable dynamic balancing valve that provides simple, accurate & reliable flow limitation & isolation in heating & cooling systems. The SIGMA Compact can be used instead of traditional double regulating valves and can be installed in both variable flow systems and constant flow systems.

CirCon and TemCon are control valves designed for domestic hot water installations with circulation. The Valves are constructed in stainless steel AISI 316 for all parts in contact with water, to secure the highest resistance against corrosion. The valves automatically control the temperature of the water that circulates through the valves. TemCon is equipped with a by-pass located outside the thermal part of the valve. TemCon is used in hot water installations with bacterial problems, e.g. Legionella.

FRESE ALPHA CARTRIDGE The ALPHA cartridge reacts to pressure fluctuations in the system ensuring that the differential pressure across the pre-adjustment unit is kept constant. This ensures that the maximum flow limit is achieved in accordance with the design.
