Manager’s Message:

Dear friends, Over the past 12 months I’ve collected the performances of the 2017 Theatre Season. A little tan journal was my confidant and accomplice as I discovered these shows and brought them together for you. I’m excited to present you with your very own copy, containing fresh and familiar productions gathered from across the country. Speakeasies and sly grog, daring damsels, saucy entendre. This year, we bring cabaret to the fore - a sumptuous, provocative delight that is informal, intimate and made for sharing. Challenge yourself to consider what performance can be as we head to the skate park, celebrating extraordinary talents in a show that will uncover unlikely heroes within our own community. Play, explore and delight with a collection of wonderful, whimsical works for children, families and the young at heart. Surrender yourself to one of the many phenomenal musical performances. The romance of classical guitar, the all-encompassing crescendo of an orchestral score or the feel-good joy of a singalong to classics you know all of the words to – in 2017, we can experience it all. This program spans the spectrum of the theatre experience, from the avant-garde to familiar classics, joined by a common thread of quality, excellence and a sense of adventure. With that, I pass on this journal to you as your own companion in 2017. Use it to capture memories, keepsakes and discoveries of your theatre journey through the year. I encourage you to reap the benefits of becoming a subscriber. Simply book tickets to four shows to access rewards like priority booking, cheaper tickets, VIP functions and deferred payment. Immerse yourself in every act, engage with the artists and enjoy. Theatre opens doors, makes connections and, most importantly, entertains. The 2017 Theatre Season Program offers a unique journey for every member of our community. We invite you to Indulge. Play. Think. Feel. Warrnambool, this is your chance to explore.

The Lost WW1 Diary Information:

Originally developed here in the Lighthouse Theatre, The Lost WW1 Diary returns home as Damian Callinan (Backyard Ashes, Spicks & Specks, Skithouse) examines the horrors of war through the lens of the larrikin sense of humour. Obsessed from a young age by the Anzac legend, a Warrnambool op shop foray leads Damian to discover the war diary of Paddy Callinan and his preparations for ‘The Big Show’. Detailed research, black humour, absurdity and deft writing swing the mood from rollicking farce to aching pathos in a heartbeat, breathing new life into old memories. Snake Sessions Information:

Imagine what performance can be when urban culture, artistic experience and local youth collide in Snake Sessions. Anarchic and street style, this show invites you to step outside your preconceptions and try on a new perspective. Sydney company Branch Nebula’s team of professional skaters, BMX riders, dancers and parkourists will infiltrate Warrnambool’s skate park for one week. Jamming moves and tricks with locals, these talented artists will hook into the power of urban culture to create dramatic art. This interplay celebrates the skill and inventiveness of our community, culminating in a spectacular improvised performance.

Media Hype:

“Circus for the fearless, the urban. A beautiful portrait of human defiance, of connection, of adrenalin.” Augusta Supple, Australian Stage Manager’s note:

Torte e Mort Information:

Rising superstar of Australian cabaret Anya Anastasia presents Torte e Mort: Songs of Cake and Death, a hilarious and outlandish cabaret that audiences can truly lose their head over. Anya Anastasia’s extraordinary vocals, mesmerising ukulele, circus trickery and diabolical keyboards, accompanied by Bec Matthews (Circus OZ, Yana Alana) on percussion are the backbone of this electrifying live performance. Torte e Mort is a fast-paced, all-original visually decadent cabaret full of recognisable characters: from Marie Antoinette to a feisty she-devil. The show takes thrilling twists and turns and is full of dramatic surprises featuring circus, shadow puppetry, comedy, and a burlesque twist. 60 minutes no interval - Warnings: Strong coarse language, sexual references and mild depictions of violence Media Hype:

Ilbijerri Theatre Company and Belvoir

Coranderrk Information:

Honest, raw and poignant, Coranderrk recreates an 1881 Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry where the people of Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve went head-to-head with the Aboriginal Protection Board. Their goal was both simple and revolutionary: to be allowed to continue the brilliant experiment in self-determination they had pioneered on the scrap of country left to them. The performance revives the voices, black and white, who fought for a better pact between the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants. This show is great theatre, and great history; paying tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to the challenge despite the odds, appropriating the power of the written word to make their voices ring loud and clear.

70 minutes no interval - Warnings: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences are warned that this production contains images of deceased persons. Media Hype:

“It is honest, open, raw, emotional, poignant; true. There is a strong spirit in Coranderrk. And to sit in a crowded darkened theatre and witness it, is a truly humbling experience.” The Spell of Waking Hours. Manager’s note:

You have to time it right. If you follow the beat of the city, your life never goes off key. Three people see each other across a crowded city station. They just missed the train. Now they wait. They think about home: Punjab, Delhi, Hyderabad. And how they just can’t seem to get the city’s talam – its rhythm – right. A timely and vibrant new work that’s both poignant and full of humour, Melbourne Talam puts contemporary social issues centre stage.

Is the true value of art in the eyes of the beholder? Maude (Julie Nihill), an unemployed bartender, bought a painting for a few bucks from an op shop. Despite nearly trashing it, she now thinks it’s a Jackson Pollock worth millions. In fact, she’s certain it is. But when world-class art expert, Lionel Percy (John Wood), flies over from New York to authenticate the painting, he really has no idea what he’s about to discover. The Exotic Lives of Lola Montez Information:

She horsewhipped the editor of the Ballarat Times for giving her a bad review. Swung down mineshafts on a single rope with champagne in hand. Escaped arrest dressed only in jewels. Her performances ‘the most indelicate that could be given on public stage’. Shrouded in gold nuggets. Sharp with insults. Swathed in scandal. In 1855 the wildest showgirl of the nineteenth century, Lola Montez, toured the Australian goldfields. Steeped in history, this rollicking performance travels the extraordinary life and legend of this remarkably adventurous woman. 60 minutes, no interval Manager’s note:

Lovely Lady Lump Information:

“Let me start by telling you I’m ok. I’m just in a small situation involving a pesky cancer tumour in my left nork, but I’m not dying and I’m the luckiest person in the entire world.” Jokes, truths, and frank insight flow from Melbourne comic and breast cancer survivor, Lana Schwarcz. “Everyone hates cancer. Good. Let’s hate it together with gags, animated projections, and some of the characters you might meet along the way.” For anyone who has ever found themselves lying awake at night worrying about life, this hilarious, poignant performance highlights our ability to take the power back from our fears if we just laugh at them. Or, at least, with them. 65 minutes, no interval - Warnings: Nudity within context, occasional strong coarse language Manager’s note:

Exposing Edith Michaela Burger and Greg Wain Information:

French chanson meets contemporary as this performance charts the tragic life, loves and losses of arguably France’s greatest singer of all time, Edith Piaf. Winner of the Best Cabaret Adelaide Fringe 2016, Exposing Edith explores the ill-fated singer’s life through the songs that shot her to stardom. Enchanting ballads La Vie en Rose, Milord and Non, je ne regrette rien are punctuated by a collection of stories of Piaf’s extraordinary life. 70 minutes no interval Media Hype:

“Burger, in all essence, could be Piaf. The music is spectacular and she sings it with all the passion of the great lady herself” Australian Stage Manager’s note:

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is the wonderful story of a family out for a walk and on the lookout for a growling bear. They have to march through long swishy grass, wade through thick gloopy mud and even battle a snow storm before entering a big dark cave where maybe they will finally spot the glinty wet eyes of a slobbering, gigantic bear winking at them through the blackness. 9.45am, 11.30am and 1.30pm - Lighthouse Studio

More stories based on the much-loved picture book character created by Ted Prior. Grug began his life as the grassy top of a Burrawang tree. Fascinated by the world around him and never short of an adventure, now he’s back by popular demand. Embarking on his own epic journey to find a rainbow, it always seems just beyond his grasp. But Grug is full of determination and his adventures are always full of surprises. Featuring exquisite puppetry and more of the gentle storytelling that has delighted audiences around the world, this brand new show has been especially created for the next generation of our littlest theatregoers (and those who just love Grug).
