A NEW START FOR LEARNING AT LIGHTHOUSE... Hello and welcome to ‘Big Bang’, Lighthouse’s brand new learning and participation newsletter, for schools, young people, artists and all others interested in getting involved in learning at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts. Lighthouse is the biggest multi-venue arts centre outside of London and in 2016 we are rebooting our Learning and Participation Programme, developing our relations with schools and stakeholders in a much more proactive way. Programmes have already started and will continue to be developed in 2016, both before and after our capital redevelopment programme which will take place from June to October. As well as a fascinating programme of outreach from visiting artists, we’re going to be developing some bespoke new programmes of our own. We’re particularly excited by our ‘Young Programmers’ strands – see p.2. To help us develop our partnerships, we’ve forged a new partnership with SoundStorm and Wave, Bournemouth and Poole’s award-winning Music and Arts Education Agencies. SoundStorm/Wave already work with all the schools across Bournemouth and Poole and many more beyond, and will be managing particular school and community programmes for us. We’re hopeful it’s going to be the start of a great new partnership which will allow us to engage much more effectively with the schools and communities we serve. We’re at the start of this journey and there is much more to come but you can read about what’s been happening so far and what’s coming up in early 2016 on the following pages. Aged 14-30?
GET INVOLVED YOUNG PROGRAMMERS Our new training programmes offering creative industry experience for young people & young adults aged 14-30. Apply now to be part of these exciting new initiatives, starting January 2016. In 2016, Lighthouse is launching a new series of training and learning opportunities for young people/ young adults. Titled ‘Young Programmers’, these have been developed for specially selected groups of young people/young adults and will run from January to May 2016. A maximum of 15 places are available on each strand. The finale of the 2016 cohort’s work will see a mini “takeover” music festival, programmed, equipped, managed and critiqued by participants, in the main concert hall at Lighthouse on 20 May. This is all part of Lighthouse’s new approach in its Learning and Participation Programme. The end of the course will see each participant receive a certificate stating they have successfully completed the programme. They will also gain a huge amount of fantastic experience on the way. There are 4 strands to young programmers and anyone can apply, from the applicable age ranges:
Young Music Programmers Open to ages 14-18 A great opportunity to learn about how music programmes are devised, booked, marketed and delivered, across the genres, from rock/pop to jazz to classical. Participants will work with Lighthouse and partners (including BSO, SoundStorm, BIC, and more) in learning all about booking, marketing, negotiating and managing music events. They will attend music events at Lighthouse and at other venues and then book and create the final takeover event on 20 May.

Young Technicians
Young Writers
Open to ages 16-30
Open to ages 13-19
Working alongside Lighthouse’s in-house technical team, shadowing behind the scenes on live shows, participants will learn about all issues associated with lighting, sound and AV for theatre, concerts, cinema and live events. The programme will culminate with technicians working alongside the Young Music Programmers preparing the 20 May finale. By the end of the course, technicians will have a comprehensive knowledge of how to prepare technically for a variety of shows
Participants will learn what it takes to make it as a writer through weekly term-time sessions that will develop confidence and skills in writing across a broad spectrum of activities. Young Writers will work with a professional writer from the creative industry and gain experience in writing Performance Reviews, Factual Articles, Blogs, Monologues, Dialogue, Short Stories, Poems, Scripts for stage, radio, television and much more. Young Writers will be encouraged to generate a portfolio of material with a view towards publication, competition entries, and performance. Writing skills for GCSE and AS level will be significantly improved. There will also be opportunity to work towards Arts Awards, to contribute work for web and print and to experience life behind the stage curtain at one of the UK’s leading theatres. Complimentary tickets may also be available for certain productions.

GET INVOLVED Seeking partner schools Are you a headteacher or senior subject leader keen to develop arts and cultural activities in your school?
Young Reviewers Open to ages 18 – 30 Participants will be taught in the craft of becoming a successful critic/reviewer. Guest reviewers from established publications will lead the majority of these sessions, with each being based around a particular show.

8-10 sessions starting 27 January-14 May 2016. Sessions will meet around a particular show Cost: £90 for the whole course including attendance at a range of shows* * Bursaries available for young adults evidencing receipt of state benefits
WANT TO APPLY?
Lighthouse is looking to develop closer relations with 6 special partner schools in 2016, from across Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset or Hampshire. These will be officially badged as Lighthouse partners and will receive a unique package of benefits. We will look to extend our range of partner schools further in 2017. Schools can be primary or secondary, though we anticipate the majority of partner schools will be secondary level. If you become a partner school, you will receive: • Free behind-the-scenes venue tours for groups of students/teachers, explaining how the venue works • Priority booking and first refusal on outreach workshops (usually subsidised or fully funded) from visiting artists/companies • Access to special ticket deals • Opportunities to invite Lighthouse staff into your school to talk about creative careers etc • Opportunities to exhibit student artwork in Lighthouse’s public spaces • Advice from our learning team
There are 15 places available on each strand of Young Programmers and we anticipate demand will be high. If you are interested in applying, please email learning@ lighthousepoole.co.uk stating which strand you are interested in or download application forms from www.lighthousepoole.co.uk or waveartseducation.org.uk Completed application forms need to be received by email by 30 November 2015. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to a short informal meeting/interview in early December. Applicants will be informed if they have been accepted on to the course in the w/c 14 December. If you’re interested in a creative career, don’t miss out on these great opportunities!
• Other special opportunities as they arise The commitment we require from schools is positive advocacy for Lighthouse, enthusiastic takeup of our offers and bums on seats! We expect schools given partner status to bring in at least 100 young people to see Lighthouse shows across 2016. Special ticket deals will be available for most shows.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING Jazz singer GWYNETH HERBERT led 2 days of songwriting workshops with Broadstone Middle School which fed into her studio jazz performance in October. TURLIN MOOR COMMUNITY SCHOOL exhibited artwork and showed films highlighting their community in late September. QUEEN ELIZABETH SCHOOL (an existing partner school) exhibited a film students made about Lighthouse, attended the Ollie Howell Sextet soundcheck and are participating in the Circa Tsuica Circus Project in March. DESIGNING NEVERLAND Various schools have submitted entries to Lighthouse’s ‘Designing Neverland’ competition, tying in with the Christmas show ‘Peter Pan’. These will be exhibited over Christmas. LIGHTHOUSE & BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA delivered a fun and lively concert with plenty of audience participation designed for 3-9 year olds. ARMONICO CONSORT’s ‘AC Academy’ choir creation programme – in partnership with SoundStorm, Lighthouse and Youth Music – has begun working at 3 schools this term and will work with 3 more next term. This will culminate with a 300 strong singing extravaganza at Lighthouse on 17 March 2016.

TAKE NOTE
In partnership with Generator we’re delighted to announce Take Note, a short programme offering a music industry road-map for young people who have an interest in developing musical skills alongside a critical industry ‘know-how’. Through a series of workshops, SoundStorm partners will develop the creative skills of young people while Generator will bring their industry expertise and contacts via a series of master classes, ranging from ‘Song writing, composition & collaboration’ to ‘Technology & Production’. A national programme supported by Youth Music, ‘Take Note’ plots out music industry progression routes that connects local hub partners, industry practitioners and the young people they work with to the wider music industry.
