By Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor Acclaimed stars of the West End stage, the Reduced Shakespeare Company, are back with another barnstormingly irreverent and breathtakingly hilarious celebration of our cultural heritage – as seen through the eyes of three Americans wearing trainers. In a better-late-than-never nod to the Bard’s 400th anniversary, the bad boys of abridgement present this ‘new’ play by the man himself, as discovered in a Leicester car park! The show, mercifully abridged by the RSC from its full hundred hour running time to a more palatable ninety minutes, embarks on its debut UK tour following world premiere seasons at the renowned Folger Shakespeare Library and the Edinburgh Fringe.

LIVE THEATRE 11
Sherling Studio Welcome to our newest space, the refurbished, reseated, reconfigured, and reimagined Sherling Studio. If there’s a single space that best embodies the spirit of what Lighthouse is about it’s our Studio Theatre. It provides a ready home for diverse and innovative national touring work, primarily in theatre, comedy, music, and children’s theatre, as well as for developing artists for small scale theatre, and circus arts. Over the coming years we will develop and support the making of new work and ideas from here. It is our creative kitchen - come see what’s cooking… A STUDIO IS A PLACE WHERE AN ARTIST MAKES THEIR WORK. IT IS A PLACE OF EXPERIMENTATION, OF LEARNING, OF NOT KNOWING AND ASKING,
Artists work in different ways; some messy, some clinical… it is cooking without a recipe book! But in all cases it is a quest to create something that has never been seen before, known before, said before… In the new Sherling Studio we seek and share performances that connect us, provoke us and in all things ask, in a myriad of ways, what it means to be human. At our most fundamental level the studio is a space where we can nurture, support and champion extraordinary new work and companies. It is the place to begin a career, to change direction and try something new. It is an invitation and provocation to artists across our region and beyond to be bold and playful. For you, our audiences it is an invitation to see and be a part of the ideas that will form the inspirational spark of the theatre of tomorrow.
OF CURIOSITY, DELIGHT, and WONDERMENT.
INTRODUCING NEW WRITING IN THE SHERLING STUDIO A studio is a making space; a place the artist goes to make work. In the studio, there’s just the actor, the director as interpreter and the writer. There are none of the trappings of a full scale theatrical production, it’s the most exposed a play can be. “This will be the place for new thoughts, either from new and emerging artists and companies taking their first steps or new steps taken by established artists. This is where you see the kernel of a new idea, it’s the soil in which
12
the seeds of future oak trees are planted and take root.” Stephen Wrentmore, Artistic Producer. Stephen Wrentmore has a clear vision of how work seen in the new Sherling Studio will fit into the artistic programme at Lighthouse and in keeping with that, his first production finds him directing Archipelago by the prolific playwright, songwriter, editor and translator Caridad Svich. The story happens in a dystopian world illuminated by love in the form of a nameless boy and a nameless girl of any age who embark on a journey from a place that may or may not be home. One is from Here, the other from There, so one is always the outsider.
“It is our pleasure to welcome you to the Sherling Studio, a space we envision will be the starting point of many wonderful stories and experiences that will keep Lighthouse vital and alive now and into the future.” Clive and Sally Sherling
“For all that happens around and to our Adam and Eve they never meet or connect with another voice,” says Stephen. “Instead they are connected to and divorced from each other. From the sound of the landscape, the ebb and flow of the ocean and the inevitable passing of time. “For all that is not there, we find clues and tethers to hook our imagination. There are fingerholds and pitons to help us climb, to show us what might be there.” The connection to the playwright’s life experience is clear. Born in Philadelphia to a Cuban-Spanish mother and Argentine-Croatian father, Caridad Svich spent her formative years gazing at the
passing miles of late 1960s America as the family moved, metronomically, across the States from a home in New Jersey to Utah, Florida, California and New York. “To define the play is to miss the point,” adds Stephen. “It is not interested in solidity, and so, perhaps we might describe it as a memory play. And indeed, in the same way as your memory plays tricks with you, so too does the playwright. It seems an act of utter futility to try and describe a play that, like the roads of Caridad’s youth, lies before you to explore and interpret for yourself.”

Dame Nature THE MAGNIFICENT BEARDED LADY Dame Nature is a bearded lady who has been looking after her facial furniture for as long as she can remember. And she just can’t stop combing over the past. Once the star of the show, now she spends her days in the depths of her dressing room contemplating the fading roar of the crowd, lost love and the merits of Phil Collins’ solo work. Straight from the old world of Victorian music hall, enjoy an evening of stories and characters for audiences who don’t like to judge a woman by her beard. Join Dame Nature as she recounts tales from her extraordinary life and has a hilarious, heartfelt and hairy look at a world in which, unfortunately for her, it’s not what’s on the inside that counts. Archipelago By Caridad Svich Archipelago is a story of love. Love found and lost and found…
Love, like the breaking of water on the shore, is constant and fluid. It tells the story of she and he. She is from here. He is from there. In a place that is here and there. One of them is always the outsider. So is love strong enough to hold them together? Caridad Svich’s beautiful new play, asks if love can transcend and surpass the boundaries of difference? It speaks to the moments between two people who are desperately seeking connection; to find each other and themselves in the in-between during tumultuous times.
Booking Fees: Prices quoted are for tickets booked in person at the Ticket Office. Tickets booked via telephone or online are subject to a booking fee of up to £1.75 per ticket.
Director, Stephen Wrentmore describes Archipelago as “a thing of relentless beauty. It aches and glistens like a body from water. It echoes Beckett yet lives without shadow. It is poetic, dense and utterly fulfilling.”

DANCE & CIRCUS The contemporary circus has everything that’s old; flying, falling, grace, risk, beauty and moments of fear.
18
Today circus has been turned inside out. It’s gone from being an art-form with skills handed down from family to family, with animals, a ring master and performances in a big top to an open practice in which artists are seeking out new directions. It’s a creative energy that you also see in dance, and it’s what unites the dance and circus artists featured in Lighthouse Poole’s autumn season; the desire to take time-honoured skills and explore them in fresh ways to create highly entertaining shows. The autumn programme features acrobatics and high wires against a dramatic backdrop of sea and sky at the Inside Out Dorset festival; an infectious marriage of folk dance and hip hop in The Demon Barbers’ Lock In; and a daring and impressively skilful circus show from Sweden in which everything and everyone – including the audience – is attached. If you want something new, but with all the virtuosity of the old, look no further!

Flying, flipping, sliding - and sticking! In this daring and critically acclaimed circus show, everything and everyone – including the audience – is attached. Seesaws, wooden blocks, a great curved silver slide, catapult and crashmats dot the stage. As the performers exhibit their acrobatic agility on each piece of kit, the theme that runs through Attached is that of contact. There is no escape. This impressively skilful circus duo is hopelessly connected. When one falls, the other one flies. The final chain reaction to this thrilling show sees two seesaws, two flying mats, a weight suspended from the ceiling, the curved silver slide, Velcro balls and audience volunteers built into an elaborate domino run. With precise skill and buckets of humour, Magmanus have produced a highly entertaining show. Whether you are 7 or 107 years, Attached just won’t let you go!

How do they do that? Why did that happen? Where did that come from? What’s next? Lighthouse is proud to curate magical experiences for our audiences and the memories created here last a lifetime, but we also know how much audiences love to peak behind the curtain and find out about the shows they see. Our programme of pre and post show activities is getting more popular with each season. Very often the lively talks hosted by performers and directors become mini-shows in their own right.

The change at Lighthouse is not limited to updating the building and improving the physical experience for our audiences and visiting artists. We know the artists and audiences of tomorrow are nurtured and built today and that vision lives in the ambition of our programme of Learning and Participation. An example of this is our extremely successful Young Programmers scheme which offers learning opportunities for young people in the arts. Working with our team and outside agencies, we offer 40 young people a range of courses, from Young Technicians and Young Music Programmers to Young Writers and Young Critics. The scheme culminated last year in The Study Break, a multi-media live music event that was booked, promoted, staged and marketed by our Young Programmers. The next event* will cover a wider range of art forms building towards the April Fools’ Festival featuring a series of cross-art performances on the ground floor of Lighthouse and the new Sherling Studio. We also have a proud and growing commitment to Artist Development. Lighthouse partners with, nurtures, and supports emerging artists. We commission work and develop artistic practice to release and inspire new stories and ways of the seeing the world around us. This extends to creative support to envelop artists and their work within Dorset and connect that work beyond the walls of Lighthouse. Details of what we do can be found on our website. Our ambition is connected to the belief that Lighthouse, as a leading cultural provider, plays a vital role in our region by providing a home for makers, writers, directors, producers and performers to meet and share ideas and change the world. * Young people, aged 16-30, are invited to register their interest in the next intake of Young Programmers by emailing learning@lighthousepoole.co.uk.

Behind The Scenes The long overdue modernisation of Lighthouse also extends backstage where many of the facilities for artists, performers and crew had remained untouched since the building opened in 1978. Updating the rear of house area has been a key element of the works programme and the artists visiting Lighthouse this autumn will be the first to benefit from some extensive renovations, including: : A new stage door and reception area : A new main dressing room
“We have a leading role to play in defining the region’s cultural personality so the money being spent is about sound investment. ” says Elspeth. “Improving our technical capabilities has an obvious benefit to the quality of presentation of the work we show here – at all levels. I am constantly amazed by how good our local companies are, they have a real edge, and part of that is because they are able to work with the support of professional theatre technicians. “That in turn nurtures an interest in the theatre, which leads to people pursuing careers in the industry as we look to encourage the next generation of arts practitioners.”
: A new Green Room – a first for Lighthouse : Improved shower and toilet facilities in all dressing rooms : A new meeting/rehearsal room : New air cooling in the Concert Hall “Excellence runs throughout the building so improving backstage enables artists working here to experience facilities that support excellent performance,” explains Lighthouse Chief Executive Elspeth McBain. Our dressing rooms have been made more contemporary, the backstage reception area is more welcoming and for the first time we now have a Green Room where artists can meet, relax and prepare.” The improvements made to our technical and digital systems are not only making Lighthouse more efficient but are also enhancing artist practice so that we can run digital systems and multi-media content in all our performance spaces.

The summer building works are only the start and Lighthouse has ambitious plans to expand the range of its activities to connect with the whole community. “Lighthouse has been at the heart of life in Poole for nearly 40 years and the work carried out this summer will see that it remains to serve the community with arts and culture for decades to come,” says Chief Executive Elspeth McBain. We aim to: : Provide the best live arts experience through curating and producing a diverse programme in theatre, music, dance, cinema, circus and comedy. : Provide a world-class facility to grow and nurture the very best talent from our community through new learning opportunities, investment in young and emerging artists and opportunities for artists to showcase their skills. : Launch new opportunities for young people to participate in high quality arts activities and provide a base for them to showcase their work.

Our plans are built on the need to ensure Lighthouse is in shape to face the future so that it can continue to welcome and inspire people. The building was founded on the principle of inclusivity – to be of value and purpose to the whole community not just an elite few – and as custodians of this magnificent building that ideal is as important to us as ever. However, although Lighthouse generates 78% of its income through ticket sales and our entertainment facilities, we need your support to ensure that we can continue to provide access to brilliant, world class cultural experiences and facilities for Poole, Dorset and the South West. Your support is vital to Lighthouse – not just now, but in the long term – to ensure that Lighthouse is the cultural leader in the South West.

Carmen New orchestration by Harry Blake New English version by Robin Norton-Hale Following a critically acclaimed seven-week run at Soho Theatre, London, this new English version of Bizet’s wildly popular opera tours the UK in 2016. Carmen captivates and provokes, disturbing the composure of everyone she encounters. Sparks fly when she meets José, but as her passion cools, his turns to obsession. This tantalising new production takes place in a torrid South American landscape of dust and concrete, where small-town boredom and machismo can turn nasty. Bizet’s powerful melodies are orchestrated for a quartet of strings, woodwind and piano by composer Harry Blake (OperaUpClose’s La Traviata and Don Giovanni).
