MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (12A)
Director: Kenneth Branagh. Starring: Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench. USA/Malta 2017. 114 mins. The best known and most loved of Agatha Christie’s books returns to the big screen with a lavish setting, an all-star complement of passengers/suspects and a few new twists and turns to keep the audience guessing. Sir Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as the magnificently moustachioed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, whose luxurious train ride turns into a chilling murder-mystery. Thirteen strangers become suspects when the locomotive is snowbound and a passenger is murdered. It’s up to Poirot to solve the unsolvable before the killer strikes again. One of the big questions for this whodunnit is who’sinnit, and the answer is practically everyone: the irresistible passenger list includes Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Dame Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Contains moderate violence and occasional bloody images.
25, 28 & 30 Nov
LOVING VINCENT (12A)
Directors: Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman. Starring: Douglas Booth, Jerome Flynn, Saoirse Ronan, Helen McCrory, Chris O’Dowd. UK/Poland 2017. 95 mins. Seven years in the making, this story of Vincent van Gogh’s life and mysterious death is a marvel to behold. Some 120 artists hand-rendered 65,000 frames of live action with oil paints on canvas, using the master’s own work as reference. The result is the world’s first fully painted feature film. Beginning a year after van Gogh's demise, it unfolds around a series of interviews conducted by Armand Roulin (Booth) – one of van Gogh's regular models – who becomes obsessed with the painter's death, which was caused by a bullet wound to the stomach. Was it an accident? Was it suicide? Loving Vincent sets out to explore one of art’s great mysteries.
Contains suicide theme, infrequent moderate sex and injury detail.
1-3, 5-7 Dec
FILM STARS DON’T DIE IN LIVERPOOL (15)
Director: Paul McGuigan. Starring: Annette Bening, Jamie Bell, Julie Walters. UK 2017. 106 mins. Based on Peter Turner’s memoir, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool follows the intense romance kindled by eccentric Hollywood legend Gloria Grahame and a struggling young actor in the late 1970s. Years later, the onset of illness leads Grahame (Annette Bening) to reach out to her former flame, Peter Turner (Jamie Bell). When she moves to Liverpool to stay with Turner and his family, the pair’s memories of their vibrant, whirlwind courtship come flooding back.

THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER (15)
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos. Starring: Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan. UK/Ireland 2017. 121 mins. Black humour, horror and classical tragedy collide in the second English-language feature from absurdist Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster). Steven (Farrell) is a successful cardiac surgeon who enjoys a happy, healthy and affluent life in suburbia with his wife (Kidman) and two children. When he befriends a young man (Keoghan) and takes him under his wing, a fatal mistake he once made on the operating table comes back to haunt him and his family in a terrifying fashion.
8-14 Dec
SUBURBICON (15)
Director: George Clooney. Starring: Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac. USA 2017. 104 mins. Once again George Clooney steps behind the camera, this time directing a screenplay co-written with the Cohen brothers. Unsurprisingly, this twisted tale of dark doings and social inequality beneath a superficially squeaky-clean 1950s American town has all the hallmarks of both the writers’ and director’s sharpest comedy-dramas. Uptight salaryman Gardner Lodge (Damon) is reeling from a break-in by thieves who kill his wheelchair-bound wife (Moore), leaving his son Nicky (Jupe) motherless. But, as Alexandre Desplat’s score shifts from laidback jazz to music of frenzied agitation, rats start being smelt, not least by a wonderfully snippy insurance agent (Isaac) and by poor Nicky. A sub-plot involving Lodge’s new black neighbours further upsets the apple-cart as the community attempts to drive them out.
9, 12 & 14 Dec
PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN (15)
Director: Angela Robinson. Starring: Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall, Bella Heathcote. USA 2017. 108 mins. A biopic of the fascinating story of psychology professor William Marston (Evans), unlikely creator of DC Comics’ Wonder Woman character in 1940. The film is structured around flashbacks from evidence Marston gives to a committee questioning the detrimental effect of Wonder Woman on the nation’s youth. It transpires that his inspiration for the character was his academic wife (Hall) and the beautiful and clever student who became the couple’s mutual love interest, Olive Byrne (Heathcote, The Rewrite). As Marston, Luke Evans (Beauty And The Beast) draws an intriguing portrait of a vain but complex creative spirit, obsessed with fetishism, bondage and sexual dominance. Rebecca Hall’s performance is true grit.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES (12A)
Directors: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris. Starring: Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue. UK/USA 2017. 121 mins. In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Stone) and former men’s number one and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Carell) became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time. As their rivalry intensified in the media glare, both King and Riggs fought complex battles in their private lives: while she championed equality, the fiercely private King struggled to come to terms with her sexuality; at the same time, Riggs wrestled with his gambling demons at the expense of his family. Together, they served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions that continue to reverberate today.
Contains infrequent moderate sex.
16, 19 & 21 Dec
LOST IN PARIS (12A)
Directors: Fiona Gordon, Dominique Abel. France/Belgium 2017. 83 mins. English, and French with English subtitles. On a disaster-filled quest through Paris in search of her missing aunt (Emmanuelle Riva), a visiting small-town librarian (Fiona Gordon) encounters an affable but annoying tramp (Dominique Abel) who just won’t leave her alone. Full of the amazing antics and intricately choreographed slapstick that has come to define Abel and Gordon’s work, this a wondrously whimsical tale of people finding love while lost in the City of Lights.
Contains infrequent strong language, moderate sex references.
17, 20-23 & 26 Dec
THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS (PG)
Director: Bharat Nalluri. Starring: Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Pryce. Ireland/Canada 2017. 104 mins. The story of the writing of A Christmas Carol, a novella that Charles Dickens was originally obliged to selfpublish in 1843. Dan Stevens (Beauty And The Beast) plays the hard-pressed, impoverished author, trying to finish his new book in just six weeks. In the process the now legendary characters of Ebenezer Scrooge (Plummer) and Tiny Tim are vividly brought to life. Adding to the poignant fun are Jonathan Pryce as Dickens’s father, John Dickens, and Miriam Margolyes as Mrs Fisk. Just in time for the festive season!
01202 280000 22-24 & 26-28 Dec
PADDINGTON 2 (PG)
Director: Paul King. Starring: Ben Wishaw, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi. UK/France 2017. 103 mins. The warmhearted, accident-prone bear from deepest, darkest Peru returns with a second helping of his endearing brand of good-natured mischief. Happily settled in Windsor Gardens, Paddington takes on a variety of odd jobs to raise enough money to buy a very special book for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday. But when the precious book is stolen, Paddington and the Browns have to track down the culprit. Ben Wishaw again voices the lovable if hapless furry character, while Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins reprise their roles as his surrogate parents, Mr and Mrs Brown. Director/co-writer Paul King returns to ensure consistent appeal, and even adds some new characters to the fun, including Hugh Grant as a vain, fading actor and Brendan Gleeson’s fearsome safecracker.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (Cert TBC)
Director: Rian Johnson. Starring: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac. USA 2017. 150 mins. “This is not going to go the way you think.” Luke Skywalker’s weighty words seem like a mantra for The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson’s vision promises to take the Skywalker saga in very unexpected and exciting new directions, delving deep into the mythology of the Force and challenging Star Wars heroes old and new. The late Carrie Fisher is confirmed to play a major role, but the film’s beating heart is the relationship between Rey (Ridley) and Luke (Hamill). The young scavenger finally comes face to face with the Jedi master, but he’s not the man she was expecting to find. Why did Luke go into exile? Why is Rey so strong with the Force? Find out this December in the event movie of the year.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (U)
Director: Frank Capra. Starring: James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Travers. USA 1946. 131 mins. One of the most popular and enduring films ever made, Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life is a gloriously sentimental testament to homely small-town moral values. Masterfully crafted, the film opens with angels discussing George Bailey (Stewart, giving one of his finest performances), a man so beset with problems that he contemplates suicide. As George prepares to jump from a bridge, his guardian angel Clarence Oddbody intervenes and shows him how badly Bedford Falls would have turned out without his good deeds. Filled with a renewed joy in life, George returns to his family for Christmas.
