APRIL / MAY 2017

MAIN FEATURES THE LOST CITY OF Z (15)

7-8, 11-13 Apr

Director: James Gray. Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller. USA 2016. 141 mins. Based on the bestselling book of the same name, The Lost City Of Z centres on the story of real-life explorer Colonel Perceval Fawcett (Hunnam), who in the 1920s embarked on a two-year journey into the Amazon jungle searching for a lost civilisation. Having left behind his sparky, intellectual and protesting wife (Miller), and accompanied by his old army pal, Henry Costin (Pattinson), he faces all manner of human and natural obstacles on his quest to solve the mystery of the forgotten city. Writer/director James Gray (The Immigrant, We Own The Night) avoids the sort of Errol-Flynn-like derring-do the film’s worthy antecedents might have employed, preferring to examine the more realistic human traits modern audiences can identify with. Ultimately, it’s a pictorially ravishing, againstall-adversity thriller.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (PG)

14-15, 18-20 Apr, 27 May & 1 Jun

Director: Bill Condon. Starring: Emma Watson, Luke Evans, Stanley Tucci, Ian McKellen. USA 2017. 129 mins. Back in 1991, the Walt Disney Company released Beauty And The Beast, an exquisitely drawn feature animation that became a gargantuan hit, delighting both audiences and critics and spinning off a blockbuster Broadway musical. So who better to breathe new life into the beloved French fairy tale – with its very modern message of not judging people by their appearance – in a live-action telling than the studio that made it a movie classic in the first place? Veteran director Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2, Dreamgirls, Mr Holmes) has refashioned the characters for a contemporary audience but stayed true to the animation’s music, with several new songs and an amended score by the original composer, Alan Menken. Get ready to be wowed all over again.

ANOTHER MOTHER’S SON (12A)

14-15, 18-19 Apr

Director: Christopher Menaul. Starring: Jenny Seagrove, Julian Kostov, John Hannah, Ronan Keating. UK 2017. 103 mins. Another Mother’s Son tells the true story of unsung Second World War heroine Louisa Gould (Seagrove), a shopkeeper on the Nazi-occupied island of Jersey who takes in an escaped Russian POW (Kostov) and then claims him as her own son. As the solidarity of the island community wavers under pressures of hunger, oppression and divided loyalty, Louisa fights to preserve her family’s sense of humanity.

Contains moderate violence and gruesome images.

01202 280000 CERTAIN WOMEN (12A)

15 & 19 Apr

Director: Kelly Reichardt. Starring: Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart. USA 2016. 107 mins. Reichardt (Night Moves, Meek’s Cutoff) applies her feel for harsh landscapes to three loosely connected stories of women who are strong in character, albeit not always certain of themselves: hard-nosed but sorrowful Gina (Williams), exasperated small-town lawyer Laura (Dern), and night-school tutor Elizabeth (Stewart), who finds herself the object of a student’s adoration. The vignettes are articulated with huge depth, and the bleached-out 16mm photography quietly intoxicates.

Contains infrequent strong language and nudity.

A QUIET PASSION (12A)

21, 22, 25 & 27 Apr

Director: Terence Davies. Starring: Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Ehle, Duncan Duff, Keith Carradine. UK/Belgium 2016. 125 mins. Cynthia Nixon gives a searing, multifaceted performance as American poet Emily Dickinson in this biopic from acclaimed writer-director Terence Davies (The Deep Blue Sea, The House Of Mirth). Confined to her strictly Protestant Massachusetts home, and with little of her poetry published during her lifetime, Dickinson leads a constrained and conflicted life. The psychological intensity of the performances makes this an exhilarating watch.

Contains upsetting scenes of illness.

THE SENSE OF AN ENDING (15)

28, 29 Apr, 1-4 May

Director: Ritesh Batra. Starring: Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling, Michelle Dockery, Harriet Walter. UK 2017. 108 mins. Retired and divorced, Tony Webster (Broadbent) leads a relatively quiet life. One day, the past comes knocking in the form of an inheritance: a diary written by his best friend from his student days, now in the hands of an old girlfriend. On his quest to recover it, Tony is forced to revisit his flawed recollections of his past. Based on Julian Barnes’ novel of the same name.

THE SALESMAN (12A)

2 & 3 May

Director: Asghar Farhadi. Starring: Shahab Hosseini, Taraneh Alidoosti. Iran/France 2016. 123 mins. Persian with English subtitles. Set in Tehran, this intriguing film by Asghar Farhadi is about a stage production of Death of a Salesman. Married couple Emad and Rana are playing Willy and Linda Loman, and when they take temporary accommodation in a shabby apartment building, their situation increasingly becomes disturbing. Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.

Contains sexual violence references, moderate sex references and violence.

www.lighthousepoole.co.uk THEIR FINEST (12A)

5-7, 9-11 May

Director: Lone Scherfig. Starring: Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Richard E. Grant. UK 2016. 117 mins. A roll call of much-loved British talent assembles for Lone Scherfig’s delightful romantic comedy-drama, which follows a group of filmmakers struggling to make a morale-boosting picture during the Blitz. Hired by the British Ministry of Information to bring a female perspective to wartime propaganda films, writer Catrin Cole (Arterton) teams up with cynical producer Tom Buckley (Claflin) for the MOI’s most ambitious project yet: the inspirational tale of two civilians’ heroics at Dunkirk. However, the story isn’t quite what it’s made out to be, and the team have to accommodate a self-obsessed, fading thespian (Nighy). Nevertheless, they press on, determined to make a film that will lift the nation’s spirits. Scherfig creates an impressive period piece around Catrin’s story, weaving an enchanting, nostalgic, yet never rose-tinted view of a nation under siege.

Contains infrequent strong language, moderate sex, injury detail.

GOING IN STYLE (12A)

12, 13, 16, 17, 20 & 25 May

Director: Zach Braff. Starring: Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Alan Arkin. USA 2017. 96 mins. In this remake based on the 1979 blockbuster of the same name, three retired pals (Arkin, Caine and Freeman) are robbed of their pensions by duplicitous ex-employers and their bankers. To get even and recover their dignity, they decide to rob a bank. Writer Theodore Melfi’s (St. Vincent, Hidden Figures) script is sharp as nails, and is executed by Zach Braff (Garden State) and his three stars with a gusto that belies their combined 247 years. The consequences and the gags may be almost obvious, but the actors’ comic timing and nuanced performances make this a riotously entertaining film, which is underpinned by a serious commentary on growing old in a callous, capitalistic society.

Contains infrequent strong language and drug misuse.

NERUDA (15)

12, 16, 17, 23 & 25 May

Director: Pablo Larraín. Starring: Gael García Bernal, Luis Gnecco, Mercedes Morán. Chile/Argentina/France/ Spain/USA 2016. 108 mins. Spanish with English subtitles. Under threat of arrest after denouncing Chile’s right-wing president, Nobel Prize-winning poet and Communist Party activist Pablo Neruda (Gnecco) is on the run. He is pursued by conflicted detective Óscar Peluchonneau (García Bernal), whom the somewhat self-regarding poet taunts with clues as to his whereabouts. This game of cat and mouse is gripping and highly entertaining, and offers a dark critique of post-war Chilean politics.

01202 280000 RULES DON'T APPLY (12A)

19, 20, 23 & 24 May

Director: Warren Beatty. Starring: Warren Beatty, Lily Collins, Alden Ehrenreich. USA 2016. 127 mins. After a 15-year hiatus, reclusive writer-director Warren Beatty returns to play reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes. Rules Don’t Apply revolves around the awkward romance between Hughes’s driver (Ehrenreich, Hail, Caesar!) and an ingénue actress (Collins, Love, Rosie) auditioning for a Hughes movie. Old Hollywood is lovingly evoked, and the machinations required of the two would-be lovers are as entertaining as Hughes’s maddeningly eccentric behaviour.

Contains moderate sex references and infrequent strong language.

THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI (12A) 19, 20, 23 & 25 May Director: Juho Kuosmanen. Starring: Jarkko Lahti, Oona Airola, Eero Milonoff. Finland/Sweden/Germany 2016. 93 mins. English and Finnish with English subtitles. The true story of Olli Mäki, the famous Finnish boxer who had a shot at the 1962 World Featherweight title. Immensely talented and equally modest, Olli’s small town life is transformed when he is swept into national stardom and suddenly regarded as a symbol of his country. There’s only one problem: he’s just fallen in love.

Contains infrequent strong language.

THE PROMISE (12A)

26, 27, 30 & 31 May

Director: Terry George. Starring: Oscar Isaac, Christian Bale, Charlotte Le Bon. Spain/USA 2016. 133 mins. In Constantinople, during the dying days of the Ottoman Empire, Armenian medical student Mikael (Isaac) falls for a French-educated Armenian girl, Ana (Le Bon), who is also the mistress of Chris (Bale), a fiery American journalist. Caught up in the onset of the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottomans, the love-struck pair face incredible dangers as they try to make a run for it. To complicate matters further, Mikael is already engaged to Maral (Angela Sarafyan), a woman from his hometown in eastern Turkey. Writer/director Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) is no stranger to personal melodrama set against harrowing human tragedy, and in this case the four-pronged romantic predicament takes centre stage but is mightily informed by a devastating yet relatively unexplored period of history.

Contains moderate violence, occasional bloody images.

In an attempt to save his theatre, koala bear and impresario Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) dreams up a talent contest for animal performers. The result is a wildly funny, beautifully realised animation with a starry voice cast, witty subplots and great, great music. 108 mins. 11 Apr

THE JUNGLE BOOK (PG)

When the tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) decrees that humans are no longer welcome in the jungle, human boy Mowgli sets off with Bagheera the panther (Ben Kingsley) and Baloo the bear (Bill Murray) to find a new home.
