Director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In The Name Of The Father) delivers a beautifully realised drama based on Sebastian Barry’s novel. It’s the story of Rose (Redgrave), the sole remaining inhabitant of a decrepit psychiatric hospital, who relives the tragic circumstances that sent her there. In the process we meet her younger self (Mara, never better) and a priest (James) complicit in her incarceration. Wonderful performances perfectly interpret Sheridan’s powerful script.

Contains infrequent strong language, moderate sex, violence.

LADY MACBETH (15)

2, 3, 5 & 8 Jun

Director: William Oldroyd. Starring: Florence Pugh, Cosmo Jarvis, Paul Hilton. UK 2016. 89 mins. Trapped in a loveless marriage, a young woman (Pugh) begins to fill the many absences in her life when she encounters Sebastian (Jarvis), the new groomsman on her husband’s rural estate. What follows is a gripping drama of crime and spiralling amorality, in which the twin engines of self-interest and physical desire set the pair on course for disaster. Adapted from Russian author Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novel, Lady Macbeth Of The Mtsensk District.

THE JOURNEY (12A)

3 & 6-8 Jun

Director: Nick Hamm. Starring: Colm Meaney, Timothy Spall, John Hurt. UK 2016. 94 mins. Based on what would become 2006’s power-sharing agreement between Northern Ireland’s Republicans and the Unionists, Nick Hamm’s fascinating film is a fictional account of the extraordinary story of two lifelong political enemies, Unionist Ian Paisley (Spall) and Sinn Fein politician Martin McGuinness (Meaney), who are forced to ride in a car together to attend a meeting in Scotland brokered by British PM Tony Blair. Will their proximity help in the quest for peace?

Contains infrequent strong language, footage of real riots and brief injury detail.

WHISKY GALORE (PG)

9-11 & 13-15 Jun

Director: Gilles MacKinnon. Starring: Gregor Fisher, Eddie Izzard, Ellie Kendrick. UK 2016. 98 mins. The inhabitants of a Hebridean island in wartime can’t believe their luck when the SS Politician runs aground just to the north of them with 24,000 cases of whisky on board. The islanders’ efforts to steal and conceal the booty are both ingenious and hugely comic, and cameo performances from a starry cast are pure joy. A remake of the famed 1949 Ealing comedy.

01202 280000 THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE (12A) 9-11, 14, 15 Jun Director: Niki Caro. Starring: Jessica Chastain, Johan Heldenbergh, Daniel Brühl. USA 2016. 127 mins. This is the astonishing true story of Antonina Żabiński (Chastain) and her husband Jan (Heldenbergh), whose Warsaw zoo became a hub for the resistance movement during the Nazi occupation of Poland. After much of their once thriving animal sanctuary is destroyed during the German invasion in 1939, the Żabińskis use what remains as a front for resistance plans to smuggle hundreds of Jews away from the Warsaw Ghetto to safety.

Contains moderate violence, threat, nudity.

THE HIPPOPOTAMUS (15)

16, 17, 20-22 Jun

Director: John Jencks. Starring: Roger Allam, Fiona Shaw, Matthew Modine. UK 2017. 89 mins. After he is fired from his job, disgraced poet Ted Wallace (Allam) is summoned to Swafford Hall, the country manor of his friends Lord and Lady Logan (Modine and Shaw), to investigate a series of unexplained miracle healings. With a poet’s passion for the truth – not to mention a penchant for the bottle – the naturally cynical Ted hurries to debunk the miracles and get to the bottom of events.

THE LEVELLING (15)

16 & 21 Jun

Director: Hope Dickson Leach. Starring: Ellie Kendrick, David Troughton, Joe Blakemore. UK 2016. 84 mins. After the mysterious death of her brother Harry (Blakemore), veterinary student Clover (Kendrick) returns to the Somerset family farm where she grew up. Against the backdrop of the floods that devastated her home, Clover confronts her estranged father, Aubrey (Troughton), in an attempt to uncover the truth. Troughton gives a finely tempered performance, perfectly matched by Kendrick’s extraordinary presence in the breakout role of the year.

FRANTZ (12A)

17, 20 & 22 Jun

Director: François Ozon. Starring: Pierre Niney, Paula Beer, Ernst Stotzner. France/Germany 2016. 114 mins. German/French with English subtitles. Anna (Beer) is the German fiancée of Frantz, who was killed by French troops in the Great War. While tending his grave, she is joined unexpectedly by the mysterious Frenchman Adrien (Niney), who claims to have known her fiancée in Paris before the war. As the two grow closer over time, Anna is drawn into a shady realm of secrets, lies and moral uncertainty.

Contains infrequent moderate violence.

www.lighthousepoole.co.uk MY COUSIN RACHEL (12A)

23-25, 27-29 Jun

Director: Roger Michell. Starring: Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin, Iain Glen. USA/UK 2017. 106 mins. After health problems determine that he must spend his winters in warmer climates, Ambrose (Glen), a wealthy landowner and guardian to his orphaned cousin Philip (Claflin), heads to Italy. Years later, Philip receives a letter from Ambrose announcing that he has fallen in love with and married a distant relation, the eponymous Rachel (Weisz). Soon after, Philip learns that his guardian is dangerously ill, but by the time he arrives in Italy, Ambrose is dead and Rachel has left for England, bound for her deceased husband’s estate in Cornwall. Racked by suspicion, Philip confronts Rachel, but he too soon finds himself under her beguiling spell. What is she? A femme fatale? A gold-digger? A tease? Thanks to skilled direction and first-rate performances, Roger Michell’s enticing period drama keeps the audience guessing throughout.

Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex.

MINDHORN (15)

24 & 29 Jun

Director: Sean Foley. Starring: Julian Barratt, Essie Davis, Simon Farnaby. UK 2016. 89 mins. Once famous for playing a popular British TV detective with a bionic eye that could ‘see the truth’, a washed-up actor (Barratt) is given a chance to revive his career when a real-life criminal calls out the fictional character as his nemesis. The combined comic chops of co-writers and Mighty Boosh alumni Julian Barratt and Simon Farnaby hit peak bonkers in what is a strong contender for funniest film of 2017.

CHURCHILL (PG)

30 Jun, 1, 4-6 Jul

Director: Jonathan Teplitzky. Starring: Brian Cox, Miranda Richardson, John Slattery, James Purefoy, Ella Purnell. UK 2017. 98 mins. June 1944. Allied forces stand on the brink of invasion, but one man stands in their way: Winston Churchill. Drained by years of war and plagued by depression, Churchill (Cox) is a shadow of the hero who resisted the Blitzkrieg. In the days before the Normandy landings, his uncertainty clashes with the gung-ho resolve of his political opponents. His fear: repeating deadly past mistakes and going down in history as an architect of slaughter if the campaign fails. Only the support of his headstrong wife Clementine (Richardson) can halt his physical and mental collapse. Churchill is the untold story of the dark side of Britain’s most celebrated leader, revealing the haunted frailty behind the rousing speeches and his vital relationship with ‘Clemmie’, the confidant who inspired him to greatness.

01202 280000 HAMPSTEAD (12A)

7-13 Jul

Director: Joel Hopkins. Starring: Diane Keaton, Brendan Gleeson, Lesley Manville. UK 2017. 103 mins. Hampstead is a charming, life-affirming tale about how love can be found in the most unexpected places. An unlikely friendship – and then a romance – develops between an American widow (Keaton) and a social recluse (Gleeson) when property developers threaten to remove him from the ramshackle hut on Hampstead Heath that he has called home for 17 years.

Contains moderate bad language.

THE RED TURTLE (PG)

8, 9 & 12 Jul

Director: Michaël Dudok de Wit. France/Belgium/ Japan 2016. 81 mins. Oscar-winning animator Michaël Dudok de Wit uses the full force of his imagination and graphic talent to tell a magical, moving and dialogue-free story of a man shipwrecked on a deserted island. Initially distraught, the castaway manages to survive and eventually fashions a raft on which to escape, only to be thwarted by a giant turtle that clearly wants him to stay. But when the creature reveals its extraordinary secret, the man’s life is changed forever.

ALONE IN BERLIN (12A)

14-16 & 18-20 Jul

Director: Vincent Perez. Starring: Emma Thompson, Brendan Gleeson, Daniel Brühl. UK/France/Germany 2016. 103 mins. Based on a true story, Hans Fallada’s bestselling novel Alone In Berlin was described by Primo Levi as “the greatest book ever written about German resistance to the Nazis”. Vincent Perez brings this powerful story to the big screen in an atmospheric film that boasts outstanding performances from its three leads. After learning that their only son has died in battle, and witnessing the persecution of an old Jewish woman living in their building, a workingclass couple in Berlin (Gleeson and Thompson) risk execution with an extraordinary act of rebellion. They begin printing and circulating postcards attacking the Nazi regime, hoping to inspire others to take a stand. But in a city paralysed by fear, the postcards soon end up in the hands of Gestapo officer Escherich (Brühl), and so a dangerous game of cat and mouse unfolds.

Contains moderate violence, threat, injury detail.

Adapted from a graphic novel, Wilson is a comedy drama about a lonely, hilariously neurotic middle-aged man who seeks out his ex-wife (Dern) and discovers that there was more to their relationship than he’d realised. Wilson’s story is neither a wistful nor a charming one but despite his crazy outlook and unlikeable flaws, his character has strange appeal as do the hilarious deadpan situations he finds himself in.
