FILM OCTOBER/DECEMBER 2016
MAIN FEATURES CAFÉ SOCIETY (12A)
13, 14, 16 & 19 Oct
Director: Woody Allen. Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell. USA 2016. 96 mins. Nebbishy Bobby (Eisenberg) goes to 1930s Hollywood, where his powerful agent uncle (Carell) finds him a lowly job. Somewhat disillusioned, Bobby eventually leaves his West Coast sweetheart (Stewart) and returns home to New York to work for his gangster brother, a man given to disposing of rivals in cement overcoats. Woody Allen’s latest film echoes Bullets Over Broadway and Midnight In Paris in both its period evocation and its emotional entanglements.
Contains moderate sex references, violence and drug references.
DARE TO BE WILD (PG)
13, 15 & 18 Oct
Director: Vivienne De Courcy. Starring: Emma Greenwell, Tom Hughes. Ireland 2015. 100 mins. Young Irish garden designer Mary Reynolds (Greenwell, Love & Friendship) is determined to win the major prize at the Chelsea Flower Show, and travels to Ethiopia to persuade gifted botanist Christy Collard (Hughes, About Time) to help her. Christy is more concerned with his vital irrigation projects, but his reluctance evaporates when she manages to win his heart in this unusual and compelling romantic drama.
ANTHROPOID (15)
14, 15, 26 Oct & 5 Nov
Director: Sean Ellis. Starring: Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan, Charlotte Le Bon. UK/Czech Republic/France 2016. 120 mins. In this powerful period thriller based on real events, a group of Czech resistance fighters plot to assassinate high-ranking Nazi official Reinhard Heydrich. Combining a breakneck plot, violence and gut-churning suspense, the film echoes the likes of Jean-Pierre Melville’s The Army Of Shadows, Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book and Edward Zwick’s Defiance in its depiction of individuals pushed to extreme acts of bravery in the face of unspeakable monstrosity.
THINGS TO COME (12A)
18 & 20 Oct
Director: Mia Hansen-Løve. Starring: Isabelle Huppert, Roman Kolinka, Édith Scob. France/Germany 2016. 102 mins. French with English subtitles. Cheerful Parisian teacher Nathalie (Huppert) is married to Heinz, who suddenly announces that he’s leaving her. Shaken by the prospect of loneliness, and struggling to deal with her relentlessly difficult mother (Scob), Nathalie finds solace with an ex-student (Kolinka) now living in a rural anarchist collective. Writer-director Hansen-Løve (Eden) weaves a compelling observational drama, capitalising on the talents of two justly venerated actors in Huppert and Scob.
Contains infrequent strong language and drug misuse.
01202 28 00 00 BRIDGET JONES’S BABY (15)
21, 24, 25, 27, 28 Oct & 1 Nov
Director: Sharon Maguire. Starring: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey. UK/Ireland/France/USA 2016. 123 mins. Twelve years since The Edge Of Reason reprised the incredible success of Bridget Jones’s Diary, Renée Zellweger makes her third appearance as the delightfully ditzy singleton. After splitting up with Mark Darcy (Firth), Bridget finds herself being swept off her feet by a handsome American, Jack Qwant (Dempsey). Then she discovers she’s pregnant. But is it Mark or Jack who is the father? Zellweger’s wonderfully nuanced performance will delight cinema audiences.
SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS (PG)
24, 25 & 29 Oct
Director: Philippa Lowthorpe. Starring: Rafe Spall, Kelly Macdonald, Andrew Scott. UK 2016. 97 mins. Accompanied by her friends Nemo (Rolence) and Marlin (Brooks), she swims to California’s Monterey Marine Life Institute, where she meets octopus Hank, beluga whale Bailey and whale shark Destiny, who agree to help her in her quest. A magical, beautifully rendered tale of rediscovery.
THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN (15)

Director: Tate Taylor. Starring: Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett. USA 2016. 112 mins. This irresistible thriller is based on Paula Hawkins’s bestselling novel. But one day, as she looks through the window, she sees something shocking happen in the house, and a mystery starts to unfold.
QUEEN OF KATWE (PG)
4 – 6 & 8 – 10 Nov
Director: Mira Nair. Starring: Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo, Madina Nalwanga. South Africa/USA 2016. 124 mins. Newcomer Madina Nalwanga stars in this uplifting and revealing account of ten-year-old Phiona Matesi’s journey from the Ugandan slums to international chess championships. While selling corn in her home village, Phiona (Nalwanga) meets footballer-turned-missionary Robert Katende (Oyelowo), who teaches chess to local children. Recognising Phiona's spirit and innate talent, Katende teams up with her impoverished mother (Nyong’o) to help her fulfil her dream of becoming a grandmaster.
FREE STATE OF JONES (15)
4 – 6 Nov
Director: Gary Ross. Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw. USA 2016. 140 mins. Based on real events in Mississippi during the American Civil War, Free State Of Jones tells the story of Newt Knight (McConaughey), a Confederate soldier who deserts after his teenage nephew is killed at his side. Pursued for desertion, Knight founds a ragtag guerrilla army and becomes an unlikely hero for the downtrodden of all races. Ross delivers magnificently on chaotic battle sequences and stunning visuals, and McConaughey gives a simmeringly powerful performance.
01202 28 00 00 I, DANIEL BLAKE (15)
11 – 17 , 27 & 28 Nov
Director: Ken Loach. Starring: Dave Johns, Hayley Squires. UK 2016. 100 mins. A searing indictment of the British welfare system, this film is a passionate plea for social justice. Daniel (Johns) is a joiner who is unable to work due to bad health. He must be seen to look for a job although, on doctor’s orders, he cannot accept any work. It’s an absurd predicament that reaches Kafkaesque proportions. Already winner of the 2016 Palme d’Or, more awards seem certain for this compelling drama.
THE CLAN (15)
14, 15 & 17 Nov
Director: Pablo Trapero. Starring: Guillermo Francella, Peter Lanzani, Lili Popovich. Argentina/Spain 2015. 108 mins. Spanish with English subtitles. Carancho helmer Pablo Trapero’s sweeping, fiercely intelligent riff on the Mob movie tells a violent and disturbing true story of kidnapping on a massive scale, perpetrated by a monstrous patriarch (Francella) and his family in ’80s Argentina. Inspired by a true-life story, the film echoes the heightened, stylised quality of Scorsese in style. Tough, violent and disturbing, The Clan is a powerful genre experiment and Trapero’s finest film to date.
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (Cert TBC)
18 – 20 & 22 – 24 Nov
Director: Tom Ford. Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon. USA 2016. TBC mins. Gallery owner Susan (Adams) unexpectedly receives a manuscript from her novelist ex-husband (Gyllenhaal). As she reads it, the novel becomes a film within a film about a family road trip that turns violent. The denouement of writer-director Tom Ford’s complex and riveting follow-up to A Single Man has considerable shock value as the motives of all concerned are called into question. Adams, Gyllenhaal and Shannon all deliver career-best performances.
ETHEL & ERNEST (Cert TBC)
18, 19, 22 – 24 Nov
Director: Roger Mainwood. Voices: Jim Broadbent, Brenda Blethyn, Luke Treadaway. UK 2016. TBC mins. Raymond Briggs, beloved children’s author-illustrator of The Snowman, also won 1999’s Best Illustrated Book Of The Year with a rather more grown-up graphic novel telling the story of his parents, Ethel and Ernest. That story is now an entrancing hand-drawn animation. As they live through the Great Depression, World War II and the birth of television, Ethel (Blethyn) and Ernest (Broadbent) experience hardship, change and a great mutual fondness.
www.lighthousepoole.co.uk A STREE CAT NAMED BOB (12A)

In this exposé of the Church of Scientology, Louis Theroux and co-writer John Dower work with Scientology defector Mark Rathbun to re-enact a training stint for new recruits. Director: Dan Pringle. UK 2016. 120 mins. The son of a kebab-shop owner adopts a Sweeney-Todd-like strategy for sourcing key ingredients as he takes gruesome revenge on the aggressive drunks responsible for his father’s death. Gory horror meets sharp social commentary.
