LIGHTING STYLES TO FIT EVERY ROOM 2013

LIGHTING STYLES TO FIT EVERY ROOM • Lighting is key in setting the style for a room, from cool contemporary to fun and funky. • Style is about a room’s personality, expressed through color, fabrics, finishes, accessories and pulling it all together—lighting! • Just keep in mind a few principles of design that go with each style, and choose your lighting to blend in and illuminate.

STYLE: Contemporary Casual • Contemporary casual rooms can be industrial, with contrasting materials like metallics and wood, or softer, with natural materials like bamboo and woven mats. • Lighting is carefully focused on functional spaces for industrial rooms, or soft focus for more relaxed, natural rooms. • Neutral colors and pastels give a restful feel, with lots of offwhite and beige.

STYLE: Sophisticated Modern • More formal contemporary interiors use geometric shapes in furniture, wall art and sculptures. • The rule of thumb is “less is more.” Rooms feature plenty of bare space—on walls, between pieces of furniture, and in high ceilings, so that each piece stands out as individual and unique. • Consider using a light fixture as a work of art in itself or choose one to add color in a neutral room. Focus on specific items with spotlights or can lighting directed at a painting or poster.

STYLE: Formal • A formal room is harmonious and balanced, with a focal point that anchors the space. Reinforce symmetry with pairs of oversized table lamps or antique wall sconces. • Use high ceilings and large rooms for opulent pieces, like glistening crystal chandeliers, Persian rugs and highly polished woods. • Finish the look with traditional accessories like tassels, heavy fringe or a polished silver service.

STYLE: French Country • French Country captures the sundrenched landscape of a Van Gogh. Imagine a rustic French farmhouse with colors and textures inspired by wheat fields, sunflowers, green riverbanks. • Start with a few pieces of weathered furniture, splash with colors like rust and creamy yellow in Toile motifs. Layer in light with pendant and ceiling-mounted fixtures of metal or vintage glass. • Add stronger accents like black, blue or green baskets, vases and sturdy pottery pieces.

STYLE: Shabby Chic • Shabby chic décor is far from shabby, but it is chic for sure! Rooms are bright and well-lighted. Fixtures range from rustic, natural-looking materials to the contrast of vintage crystal. • Mix old, reclaimed pieces of furniture with fresh, comfortable accessories for a soft, nostalgic feel. • Rough textures like exposed wood are offset by stark white everywhere, in comfy, slipcovered chairs, on repainted antiques and vintage accessories.
