Introduction Dear Readers, Solid State Lighting is one of the strongestgrowing application markets in the electronics sector. It is no wonder, then, that numerous market players are keen to have a slice of the cake through the sale of individual LED lighting components. But all too often, insufficient attention is paid to a comprehensive solution which also considers behind-the-scenes electronics, such as LED-specific power supplies and control circuitry. The development and introduction of LED lighting solutions require a precise analysis of the corresponding application scenario and competent advice. Only in this way can benefits such as energy efficiency and long useful life be enjoyed to the full, whilst enabling new and innovative concepts for interior and exterior lighting to be developed. As a system solution provider for lighting technology, Arrow Electronics offers much more than traditional distributors. Our dedicated sales and application team understands the language of lighting customers and if necessary, has access to a wide network of component manufacturers, clients and partner companies. This accelerates the development time and ensures resource optimisation on all sides. Arrow Electronics can meet or exceed all your lighting needs and accelerate your journey to market whether you need support for general lighting, portable, transportation, signage, or backlighting design. General Lighting LEDs bring extraordinary flexibility to indoor and outdoor lighting designs and because of this, the possibilities for general lighting are almost boundless. You can use LEDs to create mood, interest, and drama for architectural, commercial, and other general lighting applications through dimming options and the broad range of colors available – warm white, cool white, and every color in the spectrum. Portable Advantages of LEDs over traditional light sources make for excellent opportunities in portable lighting. The extreme durability and high efficiency of LEDs spell higher reliability, and their compact nature means portable lights can be small and light weight yet effective. The illumination pattern of LEDs is much more uniform than that of a traditional bulb. And, another major customer “care about” – the extremely long lifetimes of LEDs lower lifetime costs significantly. Transportation This market includes the full spectrum of transportation applications. Lighting for transportation is a necessity that provides many opportunities to improve safety standards and aesthetic appeal. LEDs in transportation applications are designed to reduce energy consumption, extend lifetimes to lower replacement costs, and provide more natural lighting than conventional fluorescent tubing for passenger comfort. Numerous interior and exterior applications can benefit from LEDs, and the prospects are continuing to expand. Signage LEDs are gaining ground in this territory once dominated by neon and other light sources. Readability at distances, effective luminance, appropriate viewing angle and set back, and shading are all factors that can be controlled by using LEDs. Their dimmable and programmable nature make them a natural fit for signage applications. LEDs are solid-state devices with low power consumption. There are millions of color options available using RGB emitters. Backlighting Backlighting applications provide an enormous opportunity to replace existing cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) technology with LEDs. The advantages of using LED backlighting have already been observed in the LCDs of cell phones, and their use is increasing in televisions, monitors, and notebook computers. LEDs provide more saturated colors, have longer life, consume less power, and come in smaller sizes than their CCFL counterparts. They’re also immune to vibration and offer precise control over intensity.

The Floationg Buck Topology is the lowest complexity LED drive circuit. Many off-the-shelf flyback- or hysteretic controllers can be used. In spite of its simplicity, the freewheeling diode is a critical component, the use of a SiC- or ultrafast diode is recommended. It should be noted, that the output voltage is not isolated. At high input voltages the DC supply of the IC may become difficult if no auxiliary voltage is available. This topology is well suited for use as a secondary side current source in a high power multiple string application, e. g. for street lighting.
Primary Side Regulated Solutions Mains EM I Filter
The PSR Topology eliminates the need of an opto coupled feedback from the secondary side. That lowers the part count, BOM cost, PCB size and complexity. On the other hand, the reliability of the LED power supply rises.

The regulation of a PSR circuit is not as precise compared to an opto coupled feedback from the secondary side, but good enough for most LED applications where the load is almost constant.

LED Drive > 25 W with single chip PFC controller By using a standard transition mode PFC controller it is possible to build a low cost LED ballast. Because of the ground referenced switch it is possible to omit the feedback isolation if no safety isolation is needed. To improve efficiency it is possible to use ICs with active clamp or synch rectifier drivers.

If highest efficiency and low EMI is needed in LED ballasts for several 100 Watts the LLC topology is a perfect fit. Normally the LLC stage feeds a number of current sources, e.g. floating bucks, with a constant voltage. The high overall efficiency allows very compact systems because only little heat is generated. When using a SiC diode in the CCM PFC, the EMI behavoir and the efficiency can be further enhanced. By using an interleaved PFC, the size of the LED ballast can be reduced, because smaller components can be used in the PFC stage.

Matrix drive applications usually require High Brightness LEDs in large quantities with an very effective current drive IC. Due to the high number of LEDs, closely packed together, power losses have to be minimized. Depending on the dynamic requirements of the matrix, either SPI or I²C based drivers are preferable. For video wall applications, SPI based 16 or 24 channel output drivers with current matching and fault detections are suggested. These drivers can be daisy-chained through SPI to allow the control of a whole row of LEDs from one serial Interface of a Microcontroller, FPGA or DSP. Drivers with I²C Interface are preferred in applications where LEDs are controlled by groups or over longer wires. Examples are gaming machines and control panels. Using external MOSFETs, the Matrix drivers can also be used to control RGB or RGBW power LEDs. Most drivers feature PWM group dimming or even single channel dimming to easily set a desired color for the RGB LED.

Cost-Effective Solutions to Drive RGB LEDs Infineon Technologies offers driver devices for low, medium and high power LEDs as well as microcontrollers to control the colour of the LED module. One of the fastest growing LED applications is effect lighting also called architectural lighting. For effect lighting either RGB LEDs are used where the LED consists of three chips, one for each colour (red, green and blue). Another way to generate light in different colours is to use monochromatic red, green and blue LEDs where the light output is mixed by respective optical components.
Drivers for low and medium power LEDs For low power RGB LEDs the very low cost BCR 40x series high side linear LED drivers can be used. Colour control can be implemented by using a microcontroller that generates a PWM signal. For medium power (0.5 W) RGB LEDs or mono-chromatic red, green and blue LEDs the new BCR 321U and BCR 421U low side LED drivers are the best fit. With the BCR 321U the current can be adjusted up to 250 mA. Both devices have a direct logic level input and can be controlled directly from the microcontroller. All of the BCR type LED drivers have a negative thermal coefficient; in case of temperature increase the current is reduced by 0.2 % / K. The BCR 321U, BCR 421U and BCR 40xU LED drivers are available in a very small SC-74 package (2.9 mm x 2.5 mm x 1.1 mm) with 1 W power dissipation. The BCR40xW LED drivers are housed in an even smaller SOT343 package. A still very common method for low power and sometimes also for medium power LEDs is resistor biasing. This method has significant disadvantages such as inhomogeneous light output and reduced LED lifetime. Alternatively, switch mode drivers do not meet the low price point for 0.5 W LED applications, and increase both part count and complexity of the driver circuit.
Drivers for high power LEDs When it comes to high power LEDs, switch mode drivers are the most commonly used driver types. Infineon Technologies offers the brand new ILD4xxx step down converters for high power LED applications. The ILD 4035 has a typical output current of 350 mA and is specifically designed to drive 1 W LEDs. For 3 W and higher power LEDs Infineon offers the ILD 4120 and ILD 4180 featuring an output current of 1200 mA and 1800 mA, respectively. Besides high efficiency and protection functions like over-voltage and overcurrent protection, the special feature in this price category is the thermal protection feature integrated in all ILD types. At a junction temperature of 125 °C the output current decreases sharply, ensuring a long life of the LEDs. The ILD 4001 LED controller can be used with an external MOSFET for very high currents of 700 mA to several amperes. Both the ILD 4035 and the ILD 4001 come in a small size SC4 package.
The new BCR 321 and BCR 421 LED drivers are tailored to address these deficiencies for 0.5 W LED applications. The mature BCR 40x LED driver portfolio is the best fit for 0.1 W LEDs. All these driver devices provide a very low cost and simple solution with a small form factor.

High power LEDs are driven with constant regulated DC current, requiring a “ballast” or “converter” to provide the required current from an AC or DC power source. The IRS2140/2141 series buck LED driver from International Rectifier provides an accurately controlled current and protects the LEDs against damage from overload, while providing the ability to dim the light level. The IRS2540/2541 series is comprised of high-voltage, high-frequency buck regulator control ICs for AC/DC offline, non-isolated applications requiring multiple LED circuits or requiring DC/DC colour-mixing capabilities. Applications include indoor and outdoor signage as well as architectural, entertainment, design and decorative lighting. Rated at 200 V or 600 V, the IRS2540/2541 series incorporates a continuous mode, timedelayed hysteretic buck regulator to control the average load current within a tolerance of five percent, using an accurate on-chip band gap voltage reference. The application is inherently protected against short-circuit conditions with the ability to easily add open-circuit protection. An external high-side bootstrap circuit drives the buck switching element at high frequencies up to 500 kHz. A low-side driver is also provided for synchronous rectifier designs.

LM3445 – PowerWise® TRIAC dimmable offline LED driver This industry-leading TRIAC dimmable offline LED driver solution is perfect for any application where an LED driver must interface to a standard TRIAC wall dimmer. National’s new TRIAC dimmable LED driver delivers a wide, uniform dimming range free of flicker, best-in-class dimming performance, and high efficiency – all while maintaining ENERGY STAR® power factor requirements in a typical application. Conventional TRIAC dimmers are designed to interface to a resistive load (halogen or incandescent bulb), while today’s LED driver solutions interfaced to a standard wall dimmer produce 120 Hz flicker of the LED and/or do not allow 100:1 dimming. National’s LM3445 LED driver decodes the TRIAC chopped waveform and translates the signal to dim the LEDs, achieving a full, wide dimming range without flicker.

Mains LED Controller ICs As the only mains LED controllers and drivers on the market to match the LED lifetimes, NXP’s SSL2101 and SSL2102 for dimmable LED lighting are the next step in SSL retrofit LED lighting. These small, highly integrated and highly efficient devices support the majority of available dimmers (TRIAC and transistor) and are ideal for small form-factor applications with closed casings.
Evaluation board for SSL2101 triac dimmable LED driver
The NXP mains LED driver IC SSL2101 and SSL2102 are controller ICs that deliver high efficiency and high power factor in SSL retrofit lamps. Supporting the majority of available dimmers (including TRIAC and transistor), they use very few external components and are ideal for small form-factor applications that use a closed casing. They can be used in non-isolated (buck) or isolated (flyback) configurations and are housed in a thermal enhanced package that enables a reliable and safe thermal solution. Also, for added security, the devices are aligned with regulations for safety and power factor. An internal Vcc generator supports start-up from rectified mains voltage and there is integrated circuitry that optimizes the dimming curve. There is also a high-voltage power switch and high-voltage circuitry that supplies current to the phase-cut dimmer. The dimming circuitry has two integrated current sinks called bleeders. The strong bleeder is used for zero-cross dimmer resets and TRIAC latching. The weak bleeder maintains the hold current through the dimmer. Features and Benefits: High-efficiency and high power-factor for SSL applications below 15 W (SSL2101) and 25 W (SSL2102) Natural dimming curve via logarithmic correction Supports the majority of available dimmers in the market (e. g. TRIAC, transistor) Fewer external components due to high integration level, ideal for small form-factor applications with closed casing SMPS controller with buck and flyback configurations Thermal-enhanced & small SO16 (SSL2101) and SO20 (SSL2102) package Meets safety and power-factor regulations Optimized valley switching with built-in, dedicated circuitry Built-in magnetization detection Built-in protection circuitry Supports start-up from rectified mains voltage

Power Factor Corrected Dimmable LED Driver
The NCL30000 from ON Semiconductor is a switch mode power supply controller intended for low to medium power single stage power factor (PF) corrected LED drivers. The device is designed to operate in critical conduction mode (CrM) and is suitable for flyback as well as buck topologies. Constant on time CrM operation is particularly suited for isolated flyback LED applications as the control scheme is straightforward and very high efficiency can be achieved even at low power levels. These are important in LED lighting to comply with regulatory requirements and meet overall system luminous efficacy requirements. In CrM, the switching frequency will vary with line and load, and switching losses are low as recovery losses in the output rectifier are negligible since the current goes to zero prior to reactivating the main MOSFET switch. The NCL30000 features a programmable on time limiter, zero current detect sense block, gate driver, trans-conductance error amplifier as well as all PWM control circuitry and protection functions required to implement a CrM switch mode power supply. Moreover, for high efficiency, the device features low startup current enabling fast, low loss charging of the VCC capacitor. The current sense protection threshold has been set at 500 mV to minimize power dissipation in the external sense resistor.
To support the environmental operation range of Solid State Lighting, the device is specified across a wide junction temperature range of -40 °C to 125 °C. Features: Very Low 24 µA typical startup current Constant on time PWM control Cycle-by-cycle current protection Low current sense threshold of 500 mV Low 2 mA typical operating current Source 500 mA / sink 800 mA Totem pole gate driver Reference design for TRIAC and trailing edge line dimmers Wide operating temperature range No input voltage sensing requirement Enable function and overvoltage protection Pb-free, halogen-free/BFR-free and RoHS compliant Typical applications for the NCL30000 include: LED driver power supplies LED-based down lights Commercial and residential LED fixtures TRIAC dimmable LED-based PAR lamps Power factor corrected constant voltage supplies

PWM Current-Mode Controller for High-Power Universal Off-Line Supplies
Housed in a SOIC-8 or PDIP-7 package, the NCP1216 represents an enhanced version of NCP1200 based controllers.
With an internal structure operating at different fixed frequencies, the controller supplies itself from the high-voltage rail, avoiding the need of an auxiliary winding. This feature naturally eases the designer task in some particular applications, e.g. battery chargers or TV sets. Current-mode control also provides an excellent input audio susceptibility and inherent pulse-by-pulse control. Internal ramp compensation easily prevents sub-harmonic oscillations from taking place in continuous conduction mode designs.
Features: No auxiliary winding operation Current-mode control with adjustable skip-cycle capability Internal ramp compensation Limited duty cycle to 50 % (NCP1216A only) Internal 1.0 ms soft-start (NCP1216A only) Built-in frequency jittering for better EMI signature Auto-recovery internal output short-circuit protection Extremely low standby power (no load) 500 mA peak current capability Fixed frequency versions at 65 kHz, 100 kHz, 133 kHz Internal temperature shutdown Direct optocoupler connection SPICE models available for transient and AC analysis Pin-to-pin compatible with NCP1200 series Pb-free packages available
When the current setpoint falls below a given value, e.g. the output power demand diminishes, the IC automatically enters the so-called skip cycle mode and provides excellent efficiency at light loads. 足Because this occurs at a user adjustable low peak current, no acoustic noise takes place.
Typical applications for the NCP1216 include: High power AC/DC converters for TVs, set-top boxes, etc. Offline adapters for notebooks Telecom DC/DC converters All power supplies
The NCP1216 features an efficient protective circuitry, which in presence of an overcurrent condition disables the output pulses while the device enters a safe burst mode, trying to restart. Once the default has gone, the device automatically recovers.
For further information please contact your local Arrow Branch Office.
Due to its high drive capability, the NCP1216 drives large gate charge MOSFETs, which together with internal ramp compensation and built-in frequency jittering, ease the design of modern AC/DC adapters.

READ DATA
GS, DC, and BC data are accessible via a serial interface port. DC and BC can be programmed via a dedicated serial interface port. The TLC5951 has three error detection circuits for LED open detection (LOD), LED short detection (LSD), and thermal error flag (TEF). LOD detects a broken or disconnected LED while LSD detects a shorted LED. TEF indicates an overtemperature condition. The TLC5952 is very similar to the TLC5951 except for the ability of the output to be adjustable in brightness; TLC5952 output is individually ON/OFF.

High Efficiency Control Design for Cree MPL EZW LEDs Using the company’s TPS92210 PFC controller, Texas Instruments (TI) has developed a solution that will speed the implementation of highefficiency solid-state lighting designs based on the Cree® XLamp® MP-L family of EasyWhite LEDs.
The TPS92210 is a natural power factor correction (PFC) LED lighting driver that incorporates advanced energy features to provide high efficiency control in LED applications including TRIAC dimmerbased designs for domestic, retail and architectural environments. This controller is ideal for use with the latest generation of high lumen density white LEDs such as the Cree XLamp MP-L family. MP-L LEDs, which offer brightness levels up to 1500 lumens and efficiencies of 75 lumens per Watt, reduce LED-to-LED color variation and are ideal for lighting applications where high luminous output is required from a single, small point source. The TPS92210EVM developed by TI combines the TPS92210 IC with all of the discrete, passive and inductive components needed to implement a fully functioning MP-L LED driving solution. Operating from an input voltage of 180 VAC to 264 VAC and delivering a tightly regulated LED current up to 230 mA, the TPS92210EVM offers high 0.99 PFC with on-time modulation. Compatibility with standard TRIAC dimmers allows 0 % to 100 % brightness control, with high efficiency operation maintained at all dimming levels. An isolation rating of 2500 VAC protects the control chip from high voltages, while active inrush limiting provides EMI filter TRIAC compatibility.

VOUT LED ISENSE and Conditioning
The TPS62260LED-338 EVM enables the user to individually control the brightness of three high-brightness LEDs. By adjusting the relative brightness of each of the three LEDs, the user is able to generate a wide range of colors across the spectrum. In default power-up state, the LEDs continuously cycles through the whole range of colors, but can also be manually adjusted by the on-board rotary encoder. Furthermore the EVM supports DALI protocol and RF proprietary protocol through the addition of the appropriate PHY and a specific firmware.

Not all LEDs are lighting class LEDs Only lighting class LEDs have the light output, efficacy, quality of light and reliability to replace traditional light sources. Lighting-Class LEDs help to save energy, minimum requirements for lighting applications and avoide maintenance.
Cree EasyWhite™ Bins Simplify LED Design and Improve Color Consistency Prior to this innovation, customers had to manually mix multiple LED bins to achieve consistent color points. For many LED lighting applications, such as MR-16 light bulbs, color-mixing multiple LEDs was complex and undesirable. Based on customers’ requests for tighter color points, especially for warm and neutral white lighting applications, it is Crees goal to increase end-product color consistency for all lighting applications. EasyWhite bins reduce manufacturing complexity and inventory needs. Customers can now buy LEDs just like traditional light bulbs, by specifying CCT and light output. Available products: MC-E EZW and MPL EZW

Primary Side Regulated PWM Controllers Offering constant current and constant voltage features, Fairchild’s FAN10x series primary side regulated PWM controllers significantly simplify power supply designs which require CV and CC regulation. The FAN10x family controls the output voltage and current precisely with the information in the primary side of the power supply, not only removing the output current sensing loss, but eliminating all secondary feedback circuitry. The newer FAN103 and FSEZ1307/1317 have a high voltage startup circuit and internal op-amp compensation, additionally removing the need for around 6 external components. Further, the standby power achievable using these devices is extremely low at less than 30 mW. They operate at 50 kHz, simultaneously reducing the overall transformer size and keeping the switching losses low. The FSEZ1307/1317 contain the FAN103 controller and a 700 V MOSFET integrated into a standard SO8 package. Compared with a conventional secondary-side regulation approach, the FAN10x family can reduce total cost, component count, size, and weight; while simultaneously increasing efficiency, productivity, and system reliability. Integrated PFC and Quasi-Resonant Flyback Controller The FAN6921 contains a boundary conduction mode (BCM) power factor correction (PFC) controller combined with a quasi-resonant flyback controller. As lighting solutions above 25 W require both PFC and high efficiency, this combination is ideal for lighting solutions from 25 W up to 90 W, for example low power street lighting. Both constant voltage and constant current output designs are possible. For a constant voltage design running with an European input voltage, the four point average efficiency for a 90 W/19 V power supply is over 90 %, with the full load efficiency being around 91 %. Even at 22.5 W, the efficiency is over 90 %, which is a large achievement for a small flyback converter. The standby power for this application is around 200 mW. The device has all the required protection features of a modern PWM controller, including brownout, open-loop, over-temperature and over-current protection.

Power Switch for LLC Resonant Converters For lighting solutions in the range 70 W to 450 W, the FSFR series of LLC resonant converters offers high efficiency (typically in the range of 95 %) and has low EMI. The FSFR series integrates an analog half-bridge resonant controller and two 600 V fast-recovery MOSFETs in a half bridge configuration into a small (26 mm x 10.5 mm x 3.2 mm) SIP9 package. No heatsink is usually needed on the FSFR2100 for power ratings up to 200 W. The device has a full set of protection features including abnormal overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, overload protection and thermal shutdown.
An innovative PFM mode ensures that power supplies using the FSFR2100 can operate efficiently and effectively over the full load range. The FSFR2100 can even be switched off with an external ON/OFF signal if required. The device will function up to 300 kHz, and supports a simple soft start procedure which is needed for resonant converters. Fairchild Semiconductor also offers a reference design for a 200 W LED street lighting ballast, shown below. Additional information: www.fairchildsemi.com

ASSURE HIGHLY RELIABLE LOW MAINTENANCE OUTDOOR LED LIGHTING
LITTELFUSE LED RELIABILITY DEVICES HELP YOU DELIVER Littelfuse PLED devices offer a switching feature that bypasses failed LEDs to enable other LEDs within the string to function
Littelfuse PLED series devices offer features that increase protection and extend the useful life of LED lighting designs In applications where high reliability is at a premium and maintenance difficult, Littelfuse PLED devices will help withstand outdoor environment conditions that often damage sensitive electronics. In addition to ESD, lighting and reverse connection protection functions, PLED devices bypass failed LEDs and allow the rest of the string to light. This in turn helps to extend the time periods when LED circuit replacement is required. For addition information, please visit www.littelfuse.com/PLED

LED Lighting Solutions from Bourns The explosion in LED lighting usage is plain to see all around us from kitchen recessed lighting to the latest LED backlights in LCD TV sets. This is driven partly by environmental concerns forcing consumers and businesses to reexamine their energy expenses.
SMA
Application concerns Controlling the Current LED drivers can be either linear or switching current supplies. Generally, LED applications require a shielded inductor as they require fewer turns to achieve a specific inductance. This results in lower DC resistance. Less DC resistance is required for low energy consumption. Current Sense resistors provide the feedback necessary to the current regulation controller to monitor and limit the current fed to the LED diode string.
CD1005 Overtemperature LEDs are very sensitive to heat. The PN junction should not be allowed to reach temperatures greater than 85 ˚C to ensure normal operating lifetimes and as high reliability as possible. Polymer PTC thermistors limit current and react to increases in temperature by changing from a low to a high resistance state. Surge and ESD The mechanical housing for the placement of LED diodes can expose the device package to the outside world where overvoltage transients can be applied. These transients can damage the LEDs or the downstream circuitry. To avoid damage, use protection devices that meet IEC 61000-4-2, IEC 61000-4-4, IEC 61000-4-5 standards.

AC Mains LED Lighting Protection Avago’s precision optical performance LEDs provide superior light output for excellent readability in sunlight and are extremely stable in light output performance over a very long period of time. New thermally enhanced Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) help protect a wide variety of low-power systems against damage caused by overcurrent, overtemperature and overvoltage faults, including lightning strikes, electrostatic discharge (ESD) surges, loss of neutral, incorrect input voltage and power induction. These devices help provide protection of AC mains LED lighting systems as shown in figure 1.

Figure 1. Typical lighting application utilizing an AC 2Pro device for low power AC/DC flybackconverter protection.
Integrated Device Helps Reduce Component Count
How It Works
Under normal operating conditions the AC line voltage applied to an MOV is not expected to exceed the device’s maximum AC root mean voltage (VAC RMS) rating and, provided that the transient energy does not exceed the MOV’s maximum rating, short-duration transient events are clamped to a suitable voltage level. However, a sustained abnormal overvoltage/limited current condition, such as a loss of neutral, may cause the MOV to go into thermal runaway. Protecting the MOV from thermal overheating is frequently accomplished with a thermal cut-off (TCO) device, placed in series with the MOV. A typical line voltage transient protection scheme may also incorporate an overcurrent protection element, such as a fuse, to protect the system from damage caused by an overcurrent overload that exceeds a predetermined level.
Although the AC line voltage applied to an MOV is not generally expected to exceed the device’s maximum continuous operating voltage rating, overvoltage transients may occur that exceed these limits. By integrating PPTC technology with the MOV, the 2Pro device improves overcurrent and thermal protection under conditions where the MOV is exposed to prolonged continuous overvoltage events. In the event of an overvoltage transient, such as a loss of neutral event shown in figure 2, the PPTC element of the 2Pro device heats up, trips and goes into a high resistance state, helping to reduce the risk of MOV device failure.
Tyco Electronics’ AC 2Pro™ Tyco Electronics’ AC 2Pro™ device combines a polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) with an MOV component into one thermally protected device to help provide resettability in case of overcurrent or overvoltage events. This integrated-device approach was developed to help manufacturers meet industry requirements, such as IEC61000-4-5 and IEC60950. Standard unprotected MOVs are typically rated to 275 VAC RMS for a universal input voltage range. In a loss of neutral condition they can overheat with negative consequences, even if a fuse or power resistor is used upstream. The AC 2Pro device’s PPTC element helps prevent thermal runaway, maintaining varistor surface temperature at less than 150 °C, and preventing the device from reaching unsafe temperatures caused by overvoltage transients.

Components for LED lighting solutions A thermal solution is essential for LED lighting applications to enable a long lifetime, high luminance efficiency and equality of brightness. With the PGS (Pyrolytic Highly Oriented Graphite Sheet), Panasonic Industrial offers an ideal solution to fulfil these requirements for LED lighting devices. The two main functions of PGS are: Thermal transfer The PGS is acting as a heat pipe transferring the heat energy from the heat source to the heat sink, which allows a design positioning the heat sink not directly at the heat source Thermal interface The PGS is improving the efficiency of the heat sink and achieves a hot-spot reduction and allows to spread out the heat energy. This improves the reliability of the semiconductor that produces the heat Example for a cooling solution of LED lamp with PGS: Heat Spreading Board (Aluminum) LED PGS Graphite Sheet
The PGS is made of graphite with a structure that is close to a single crystal combining high thermal conductivity with a thin and low weight structure.
PCB mounting LED (FR4)
Its special characteristics ar high thermal conductivity (7001750 W/mK), thin film (17-100 µm), light weight (1-2 g/cm3) and high flexibility in bending and shaping.

Energy-Efficient Inductors from Fastron The requirements of electronics developers in terms of energyefficient and cost-effective inductors for lighting applications have become more demanding. LEDs, high-pressure gas discharge lamps, fluorescent, tubular and halogen lamps, xenon and krypton luminaires: all require individual power supplies if they are to do “visible” justice to the efficiency that is characteristic of them.
Preferred Parts for Lighting SMCC HACC HBCC
VHBCC
Fastron, one of the leading manufacturers of single inductors, is constantly extending its product range for applications of these types. Fastron’s Ferrite core and iron-powder core chokes with copper wire wound coils typically have low resistance levels, resulting in extremely low heat emissions. In terms of core shape, rod or drum cores are used. Using wired cores or self-supporting constructions (where the winding wire is also the connecting wire) through to SMT designs, coils can be economically manufactured in incremental inductances (with L values up to the mH range). Single-layer coils wound under controlled conditions ensure best protection against high surge impuls voltages.

Fine Grid Heat Pipe (FGHP) is a new cooling technology based on Molex’s own technology and in-house manufacturing processes for super fine-pitch etching. FGHP consists of an upper plate, middle plates and a bottom plate, all of which are made from pure copper. These plates are bonded to each other by vacuum pressing, and pure water is used as the internal coolant. FGHP enables customers to spread heat more effectively and evenly than using copper plates or other competing technologies. It is ideally suited for lighting applications where high-power LEDs generate a lot of heat, which then needs to be dissipated effectively in order to ensure maximum life of the LED.

Inverted SMT Thru-Board Connectors Speed LED Assembly The Tyco Electronics inverted SMT thru-board connector provides a means to bring power from the underside of an aluminum clad or FR4 PC board, thus eliminating dressing wire leads on the top side of LED boards. With a space-saving, low-profile design and rounded corners to minimize shadowing, the two-through six-position connectors fit through a hole or notch in the board to present an underside interface. The connector accepts the standard Tyco Electronics Mini CT connectors and uses surface-mount hold-downs to provide stability during mating and unmating. The inverted design facilitates easier assembly and installation of solid-state LED lighting in architectural, residential, and commercial applications. The Mini CT connector is rated for 3 A per contact on 24 AWG wire. High-temperature materials allow the connector to be reflow soldered, while a flat top surface provides compatibility with vacuum pickup. With UL Listing and CSA Certification, the connectors meet the requirements of UL 1977, File No. E2847

New SMD-Connectors for LED applications Phoenix Contact created a new generation of small connectors that help lighting manufacturers to simplify the wiring of LED modules. The PTSM series connectors are easy to integrate into existing SMT processes and feature fast, reliable connection technology. When it comes to solid state lighting, more and more manufactures use high-power LED boards for modular designs. A popular solution for these applications is to mount the high-power LEDs on a metalcore printed circuit board (MCPCB). The metal layer in these boards provides an excellent means to disperse heat from the LEDs but also has an adverse effect: conventional through-hole connectors which ensure fast and easy wiring of the board cannot be used anymore. Suitable connectors for LED boards in surface-mount technology are still hard to find on the market. Therefore, it is common practice that the connection wires are often soldered to the MCPCB in an additional, sometimes even manual, process. Soldering to metal core boards is an energy- and time-consuming procedure that increases unit costs. Pressure of costs, quality issues and the unpleasant appearance of the connection drive manufacturers to look for better connectors for their LED boards. The PTSM connector measures only 5 mm in height and offers a wide range of beneficial features. Its housing is made from LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer) to withstand the heat during the reflow process. Rugged SMD style anchors enable multiple wire termination and disengagement cycles. The connector is approved for stranded and solid wires and allows for cross sections up to 0.75 mm². Operation of the spring connector is comfortable and simple – a small screwdriver is the only tool needed for wire insertion/extraction.
applications using daisy chaining. Available in horizontal and vertical versions, the PTSM connector supports various design approaches. In addition, hardware developers can choose between two mounting technologies: SMT for MCPCBs and pin-in-paste for ordinary PCBs. All products are wrapped in tape on reel. With all its benefits the new PTSM connector will help to simplify the wiring of LED lighting modules. Phoenix Contact is a world leader in electrical connection, electronic interface and industrial automation technologies. Key specifications: Current rating: 6 A per contact Voltage rating: 160 V Wire range: 0.14 to 0.75 mm² (suitable for stranded and solid wires) Metal parts: Cu alloy Plating: tin plated Insulator material: LCP
