UNION BUDGET 2014-15 FINALLY A PRO-TOURISM BUDGET Modi Government’s maiden budget promises Achhe din for tourism industry
||FROM THE EDITOR || EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING urs is a country where superstitions are endless. I like to believe I have a ‘modern, scientific-mind’ but even I can’t help thinking that the folks at Malaysian need to hire a Vastu consultant to inspect their aircrafts and hang the customary ‘nimbu’ and ‘mirchi’ from their wing tips to ward off bad luck. I really feel for airlines in general these days. It is no secret that their profit margins are pitiful. There is stiff competition in the industry, especially from the Middle-eastern luxury carriers which get ample support from their governments, the prices of oil seem to be perennially rising and the supply of aircrafts is limited, there are only two big aircraft suppliers- Boeing and Airbus. As if life wasn’t tough enough for airlines as is now aircrafts have started randomly disappearing and rebels have access to weapons sophisticated enough to start shooting down planes at high altitudes. Unfortunately, it is not just the airlines that are suffering because of global instability. I recently went to Israel, genuinely one of the most bewitching, culturally enriched and holy countries I have had the pleasure of visiting. The holiday was spectacular, but the minute I came back home and turned on the television the deadly bombings in Israel and Palestine plagued the news channels. It is so disheartening that safety concerns prevent tourists from flying and visiting some of the most enchanting destinations. We are all aware of the way unrest in our very own natural jewel Kashmir takes a heavy toll on the livelihood of its inhabitants, and severely handicaps the tourism sector.
O
Being a keen stakeholder in the travel industry and more importantly a human, I hope for a safer world! The good news, however, is that the over all forecast for tourism, particularly Indian tourism seems good. We courageous Indians are determined to see the world no matter what we read in the papers! Passenger numbers are growing and our new government seems the most serious one yet to push ‘Incredible India’ to it’s potential. Our features ‘Achhe Din for Tourism Industry (pg 24)’, ‘Rail Budget Shot in Arm of Indian Domestic Tourism (pg 14)’ and ‘Hotel Industry not amused by Modi’s Budget (pg 20)’ analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the budget for the tourism and hotel industry. There are also many other things you can find in our August issue: the state and national tourism boards seem to be full of energy, many enterprising new plans and products have been announced last month. To learn more read our ‘Government’ and ‘International’ section carefully. Finally, we realize that you, our readers are India’s key travel decision makers. We want to give you our insight to better assist you in making your travel choices. Starting from this issue we will review different hotels, destinations, airlines, corporate events, convention centers, travel exhibitions and airport lounges monthly. Turn to page 17 and page 28 to read our reviews. Happy Reading!

THE INDUSTRY’S COMMENTS ON RAIL BUDGET 2014-15 “The pro-tourism focus of the Railway Budget via a strategic 3- pronged combination of connectivity, safety and modernisation-technology has brought the spotlight back to Destination India and augurs well from both an inbound & domestic perspective. Connectivity to Kashmir, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, immediately put them on the tourist radar as key emerging opportunities. We are delighted with the impactful new initiatives of both High & Semi-High Speed projects, the addition of 17 premium trains and 38 express trains, also the enhanced road-rail connectivity to key tourist locations. The Railway Budget is visionary and long term in impact and a significant step towards developing new tourism hubs.” Madhavan Menon, MD, Thomas Cook (India) “Introduction of more tourist trains to link all major tourist places across the country, proposal to start Bullet Train between Mumbai & Ahmedabad and diamond quadrilateral project of high speed trains to connect all major metros are the welcomed steps and this will flourish both international and domestic tourism especially the rail tourism.” Subhash Goyal, President, IATO “A better, more efficient and safer railway network will help everyone, tourists and normal travellers alike. The moves mentioned are very positive and I know we will have a trickledown effect in tourism as well. The railway budget has to look at a much larger picture than tourism and I think we will benefit from their vision.” Rajeev Kohli, Joint MD, Creative Travel “The initiatives in the Rail Budget are welcome but you know YEH DIL MANGE MORE. We need to make tourists to explore the Indian trains and for that, there should be separate priority reservation system and there should be certain bogies on all major trains where the Railways can charge more and these bogies should be reserved only for foreigners where they should be given best of the services,” Arun Anand, MD, Midtown Travels “The announcement of `1000 crores for rail connectivity in the North East region will expedite tourism related infra-structure and other developments in that Region. The FDI in rail can bring about better development and boost in infrastructural network,” Biji Eapen, President, IAAI “Rail budget has some favourable announcements for promoting Tourism and we hope that will be implemented soon. I hope this govt. led by PM Mr. Narendra Modi understands the importance of inbound Tourism and will able to do more favours for Tourism industry in next budget.” Ravi Gosain, MD, Erco Travels

FLIGHT REVIEW ON BOARD ❖ B SRISHTI RAI Y
For quite a few months now, I have been seeing Virgin Atlantic promote its Premium Economy. Every time I look at the cover of my own magazine I am reminded that it is ‘No Ordinary Premium Economy’. It should come as no surprise then that I was quite excited to fly on it for the first time last month. I was going to London and the flight timing suited me the best. I have been flying the Delhi-LondonDelhi segment for as long as I can remember. I have tried and tested almost every airline in this sector, so I fit the profile of a discerning customer quite well. By now, we all pretty much know every premium economy has reclining seats, TV screens, amenity kits and decent food. What I was eager to see was how the experience on-board Virgin would be different from flying premium economy on other European carriers. Kudos to Virgin’s persuasive skills! I was convinced they had ‘no ordinary premium economy’ even before we boarded. Almost every woman and student who has travelled in recent times has had some issues with the stringent restrictions on baggage allowances. Fortunately, it seems Sir Richard Branson took some advice from his wife and daughter and I got to enjoy the generous three-baggage allowance (23 kg each). This in itself was a huge inducing factor for me to choose the airline. I saved all the money I usually pay for extra baggage and decided to spend it on well, stuffing my baggage! Apparently, Virgin Atlantic has its fingers on the pulse of its customers. Once I reached the gate I had priority boarding just like Upper Class. After being seated I realized the width of my seat was more than any other premium economy seat I had sat on. I confirmed this later and found that it was 3 -3.5 inches wider than

its competitors. The flight attendants were welcoming. The food and the inflight entertainment were very good. Once I had landed and cleared customs my luggage had priority status, a major time saver. The experience in itself was pleasant enough for me to fly the sector again. But, any premium economy flight that's makes me the beneficiary of 50% extra bonus miles over economy (other airlines only provide 25 % extra bonus miles) is bound to score my loyalty. The fact that the airline still gives a devoted section of my readers the very controversial yet much coveted travel agent’s commission is an added benefit.

As India’s national carrier, Air India holds a special place in the Indian aviation sector. By joining the Alliance, Air India would make it easy for international passengers flying on member airlines to have easy access to Indian destinations. “Brand ‘Incredible India’ will get a much needed boost with the start of issuance of e-visa at nine major Indian airports announced as part of the Union Budget. E-visa implementation will certainly bring Destination India firmly back to favoured nation status and give it an edge over neighbouring competitors, thus creating an immediate window of opportunity for the upcoming inbound season.”

“The visible focus of the budget is to position India as an attractive tourist destination. The Budgetary proposal to create five tourist circuits around specific themes is likely be a big boost for the development of tourism.”
“The proposals to develop new airports in tier-I and tier-II cities is definitely a boost to the aviation and tourism industry, however, increase in baggage allowance from Rs 30000 to Rs 45000 will only help the Indians residing abroad or Indians travelling as tourists to purchase or shop more.”
“Given that this is the first time in so many years that tourism had been mentioned significantly in the union budget, it is a great success for us. Yes, we could have got more, but it is a start and we are not unhappy at all. We achieved a few of the major items we asked for.”
“The budget although is a first step where tourism has been recognized but it does not meet the expectations of the tourism industry. The tourism industry was expecting much more, such as infrastructure status to hotel industry and some relief on taxation on transport etc.”

“The government has kept up with their promise of developing tourism as a core sector for the economic development of the country. Keeping in line with the 100 Day aviation policy and a promising Rail Budget, the government has announced number of measures for holistic development of the sector in the Union Budget 2014-15, harnessing the power of technology and broadband in the country.”
“The government’s emphasis on travel and tourism in this year’s budget was on expected lines as this government has shown its intent to use travel and tourism to promote inclusive growth, as this sector contributes approximately seven per cent of India’s GDP and it helped create over 40 million jobs last year.”
“For the first time in the history, tourism has got importance and word ‘tour operator’ has been mentioned in the budget. This will encourage inbound tour operators facing slowdown from last couple of years. PM Modi’s first budget will put fresh energy in tourism industry and it will surely be a game changer.”

The exemption for services provided overseas to foreign tourists by Indian tour operators is a trifle bizarre and will not bring any relief to the majority of tour operators. Only multinationals companies would perhaps benefit from this. JW Marriott Bangkok A Gem in the Crown

USEFUL FACT Accredited travel agents get 10% commission for selling rooms.
“A steakhouse on our only night in Bangkok?” asked my husband in the most exasperated tone he could muster, as I informed him of our dinner reservation at the New York Steakhouse at the JW Marriott that night. I, on the other hand, fully aware of the fact that he had his heart set on a typical Thai meal in Thailand’s capital city, could not resist dining at the legendary restaurant on the 2nd floor of the hotel we were to call home for the next 24 hours. Any doubts my husband may have had concerning my sanity melted away when he ordered a Caesar salad at the start of his meal, for two minutes later, the server showed up with a Caesar salad station by our table to prepare the dressing (yes, I said dressing, not salad) from scratch. 20 minutes and a host of exotic ingredients later, the most sumptuous looking (and tasting) Caesar salad was put on our table. My

husband didn’t utter another word of protest for the rest of the evening. The menu – classic New York Steakhouse was as classy as the photographs of the New York skyline that adorned the wall. Or the silver cutlery that was placed on the table. The melt-inyour-mouth steaks gave the fresh seafood stiff competition. In a hotel that has become a byword for style, this steakhouse is definitely Bangkok’s, if not Thailand’s best. In fact, the dinner that night had set the bar very high, but the hotel never failed to impress. Wooing guests for the last 17 years, this haven for seekers of all things luxe is very centrally located in Soi 2 on Sukhumvit Road, one of Bangkok’s most sought after addresses and is the place to stay if you want to scowl the city for some retail therapy, world class dining, nightlife or even a peek into Bangkok’s hustle bustle. Naturally, the accolades just keep flying in, with Conde Nast Traveller readers ranking it the 5th best hotel in Thailand. Travel + Leisure magazine placed it amongst the top 500 hotels of the world in 2013. But the cherry in the bubbly is the spa, a sanctuary for the senses that occupies a complete floor of the hotel. A bad month at work, a maid-less week and an overnight flight later, I trudged my exhausted body into the spa, believing that no one short of God could revive me. Surprisingly, my Goddess like masseuse, with her perfect Swedish massage techniques, traditional Thai hot herbal compresses and exotic frangipani oil managed to iron out all my kinks and send me back the same woman, only in

a new body. Bliss! Coming back to the food, self-proclaimed gourmands like myself never had it better, with a whopping 10 restaurants and bars to choose from. Get your sushi fix with some divine fish at Tsu Japanese Restaurant or break bread with food cooked on the griddle right before your eyes at the Nami Teppanyaki Bar. Lovers of all things Chinese will savor the exquisite Cantonese and Szechuan creations at Man Ho Restaurant. The award-winning Marriott Café served me the most scrumptious basil and cheese crepe that I had ever tasted. The Bangkok Baking Company did the same to me with its heavenly chocolates. Those missing the big apple can kick back with cocktails and a bite, complete New York style, at the Manhattan Bar. And then there is always my beloved New York Steakhouse. And now for a little on the rooms in this not so little hotel (441 rooms call the JW Marriott Bangkok home). Mine was nestled on the executive floor and swathed in black, white and silver. The thrum of the city traffic was muffled to a distant hum by the heavy drapes sitting on the chicly masculine grey walls. And I, a person who takes what’s on the sink rather seriously, was thrilled to see bathroom amenities from Aromatherapy Associates, a London-based beauty company founded in 1985. And the oldest trick in the book, chocolates on the pillow, never fails to charm the pants off me! And while we are talking executive, I have to say that the executive lounge at this hotel is by far the best in the business. We are talking an open kitchen, a live station with a chef cooking food to order, a multi-cuisine menu that changes daily and a outdoor deck for dining alfresco! For my husband, the deal clincher was the shoeshine service at the lounge. Sold. I must sheepishly admit that as any seasoned traveller, I am not easily impressed. In the same breath, I must also confess that the JW Marriott is an absolute gem in Thailand’s crowning city. Royalty, politicians, some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry and its many, many more guests couldn’t agree more. And neither can my husband.
