E-VISA LAUNCHED Big gain expected in FTAs
COVER STORY

GOVERNMENT
IN CONVERSATION
The Government of India has rolled out much-awaited e-visa facility for 43 countries. Launch of e-visa is expected to give major boost to inbound tourism in the country.
Walking on one foot Women in top positios in tourism
Safety and security of tourists and promotion of domestic tourism to be top priorities of new tourism minister, Dr. Mahesh Sharma
South African Airways is seeing a steady rise in passengers from India, says Sajid Khan Country Manager - India, South African Airways
||FROM THE EDITOR || Launch of e-visa marks a new chapter for ‘Incredible India’ For those of you who have been religiously reading this section over the past few months I am sorry to disappoint, but I am filling in Srishti’s section this month. She is extremely busy preparing for our upcoming Award Show. I am sure all of you, my readers the most distinct members of the travel trade, are aware that last month was very eventful for the Indian travel and tourism industry. In the first expansion of the Union cabinet Dr. Mahesh Sharma was named the new minister of Culture & Tourism (Independent Charge) and the Minister of State for Civil Aviation. Additionally, a new Secretary and Joint Secretary were also appointed. Everyone jumped for joy when Dr. Lalit K Panwar took over the post of Tourism Secretary. After all he is veteran in the industry and his experience, knowledge and innovative initiatives in this sector make him the perfect fit for the post. In fact, the New Joint Secretary Dr. B Suman also has a background in tourism. He was previously tourism secretary in Government of Kerala. So we should rejoice that we have a new, experienced and promising team at MoT to fulfill the Government’s past commitments. November also witnessed the launch of the much-touted e-visa scheme, which is set to transform the manual visa regime of the country, easing the entry of foreigners into our country. The industry had relentlessly been pursuing this cause for years and its implantation is a historic day for the tourism sector. Our cover story (Pg26) has covered the launch of e-visa extensively, analyzing its positive effect on the country’s tourism sector.
However, the success of the e-visa scheme will largely depend on its effective implementation and marketing. And though, this landmark initiative will no doubt boost inbound tourism, there are many other important issues such as lack of infrastructure, lack of hygiene in and around tourist spots, and most importantly, safety and security of tourists that must not be ignored. Recurrent occurrence of crimes like murder, rapes and molestation do a great disservice to the cause of Incredible India. A seamless and hassle-free entry in the country is essential for promotion of tourism, but we need to strengthen security measures for tourists. In this issue, we have done a feature story on the women force in India’s travel & tourism industry titled ‘walking on one foot’ (Pg. 10). The women covered in the story are highly successful and have carved a niche for themselves in the industry. But those who like to avoid our industries misogyny have long used these rare success stories as a smokescreen. Women in the Indian tourism sector make-up more than half of the overall workforce but that hardly makes them equal. A deeper look reveals that women make for a small proportion in key senior positions in the industry. While the "women have never had it so good" canard is becoming increasingly popular in our country, the truth is that their progress and representation in key positions is still a grave issue for concern and debate. Finally, I want to remind you that the Travel and Hospitality Award Show is right around the corner. Do not forget to nominate your company or yourself to win one of the prestigious awards! Enjoy the rest of 2014 and see you in 2015!
