I write this page on a flight, sitting next to my husband of three months. The giddy haze of our wedding week is now far behind us and we are on our way to enjoy our summer/honeymoon. While I sit here it dawns upon me that most of us celebrate the biggest milestones in our lives by travelling. Whether it is a wedding (honeymoon), an anniversary or a birthday we like to mark the occasion by taking a holiday and nothing makes these events as memorable as our trip. Interestingly, no matter what our budget is, when it comes to these “special holidays” we stretch our allowances to the maximum, plan months in advance and desperately search for deals to be able to afford and enjoy a luxury vacation. This is why no matter how much the demand for budget travel inflates, luxury travel will always thrive. See, luxury travel is synonyms with aspirational travel and the very core of human nature is to aspire. Now, luxury and aspiration are subjec-

tive, of course, to some luxury may mean a business class ticket and five star accommodation and to others it may mean a private charter and the presidential suite but what best symbolizes luxury today is personalisation and authenticity. You can learn more about this and other trends in luxury travel from our cover story, ‘Luxury travellers seek personalised and authentic experiences’ on page 22. Skip a few pages ahead and you can read about Kerala- God’s Own Country- in all its emerald splendor on page 26. From the natural breathtaking beauty to the delectable cuisine everything about the state makes it perfect for tourists and a favorite amongst our entire team. Also, in this issue we have interviewed one of the young stars of the travel trade about his foray into film producing (pg 28). EaseMyTrip’s promoter Nishant Pitti is producing Irrfan Khan starrer Madaari, which hits cinemas this July. I hope you all watch and support a member of our fraternity. As for my honeymoon, you can read all about it in our next issue. Until then you can reach me at editorial@tnhindia.com. I would love to hear your views and suggestions on how to further improve our magazine. Happy Reading and Safe Travels!

Luxury travellers

seek personalised and authentic experiences In the new and emerging world of luxury travel, experiences matter more than destinations; the unique and innovative experience that has been curated as per the choices and preferences of travellers.

v B PREM KUMAR Y

Luxury travel has traditionally been considered as journey undertaken with utmost care, comfort and indulgence. Flying in a private jet charter, first class or business class, staying in the most exclusive hotels and resorts and holidaying at trendy destinations are some of the basic features of luxury travel. Needless to say that luxury travel is meant only for those who can bear its hefty cost. While luxury travel continues to be the exclusive domain of the affluent, the segment is evolving with time and new trends are replacing the old ones. In their pursuit of something new and unique, luxury travellers are giving preference to authentic and innovative experiences over typical extravagant journeys. Travellers are becoming savvier, discerning and experimental; they are becoming more demanding in terms of quality and experiences. The new luxury travellers are not satisfied with just high-end comfort and

22

indulgence. They want much more than lifestyle amenities such as spa, salon, swimming pool, etc. They now want very authentic and personalised experiences delivered with complete seamlessness. Authentic & innovative experience The luxury travellers now want to experience something authentic and innovative for their holidays. For them, mere staying in a five-star hotel is no longer enough. The hotel must provide unique, authentic and creative experience to its guests to differentiate itself from the other luxury hotel. The discerning and demanding luxury travellers are driving hotels to be creative and innovative. They also try local cuisines. Because of this new trend, luxury hotels are offering activities and experiences with authentic local flavor. This doesn't mean that luxury travellers now care less of high-end amenities, but in addition to these amenities, they want

more. They are interested in knowing local communities and their culture. They interact with local people such as their guides and people on the street to understand the place. As a result they return home with an enhanced understanding of the place and the ever-lasting memories of a pleasant and rewarding experience from their journey. A new report ‘Shaping the Future of Luxury Travel’ by Amadeus says: global consumers are increasingly spending their disposable income on experiences rather than material goods. And consumers' desire for these life experiences is spurring a growth in luxury travel that is outpacing the rest of the travel industry. Luxury travellers want unique, exclusive and exceptional experiences from their holidays. There are some who want to emotionally connect with the destination and for this purpose they interact with local communities. There are others who want to maxi-

mize their experiences. They want maximum rejuvenation and complete disconnection from their day to day life. For these kinds of luxury travellers, holidays are all about high-end service and amenities; they wish to be pampered to the hilt. Personalisation Personalisation has emerged as another important trend in luxury travel. Luxury travellers want complete personalised experience from hotels and resorts and other services. Nothing less is expectable to them. Hotels and resorts are focusing more on customized guest experience that is offered as per the demand and preference of guests. Luxury guests want the latest, the rarest and the best experience. A new luxury traveller wants their journey personalised as per his requirements and preferences so that he/she has very unique and seamless travel experience. The emerging new phenomenon is that demands for personalised and exclusive experiences are growing significantly. The 'one size fits all' approach is no longer viable option for five-star hotels. Luxury ceases to be true luxury when it is not exclusive and inspiring. In this information age, information is flowing from every nook and corner, and consumers are well informed. They have far more options than before. This has given rise to much

more personalised approach in luxury travel, where choices vary hugely from person to person depending on their background, perception and preference. "Luxury means different things to different people and this is especially true today. As emergent middle classes seek the material aspect of luxury travel, more mature markets are craving a new, evolved kind of luxury. This is why offering luxury customers a relevant personal and exclusive experience will become even more crucial than it is today - it will be a differentiating factor between old and new luxury," said Rob Sinclair-Barnes, Strategic Marketing Director at Amadeus IT Group, adding that for travel companies, understanding their role in delivering an end-to-end luxury experience for a traveller is key to improving collaboration, and reinforcing an industry-wide push for consistent luxury service.

Art & culture Another significant latest trend in luxury travel industry is that travellers are now taking interest in art and culture. With increased interest of travellers in art and culture, hotels are now employing in-house artists and creating art galleries to fulfil the demands of their guests. These galleries showcase authentic pieces of local artifacts. Hotels organize cultural programs in which local artists perform. Also, they participate in local festivals and carnivals to indulge in real cultural experience of the place. Luxury travellers have now also become cultural explorer and keen observers of art and culture of the place they visit. Their desire to explore new culture is taking them to new and emerging destinations, which are rich in culture, or have been largely unexplored. In short, the emphasis is more on cultural experience than on materialist luxury. Seamless pleasure Seamless experience has emerged as one of the key elements of luxury travel. Luxury travellers wish to have an overall pleasant and seamless travel experience. A seamless travel gives travellers more time to relax and enjoy without any inconvenience. Their every moment is precious and they want to enjoy every moment of their trip and get right value for their money.

Here, role of service providers right from travel agents to hotels is very important to offer seamless experience to their guests. Responsible Luxury Nowadays, the concept of responsible luxury is becoming popular among travellers and they are becoming more and more conscious towards environment. Today luxury travel is an activity not only to pamper yourself but also an act to show your commitment to the planet and the local community. Luxury travellers are now increasingly becoming conscious of their indulgence and expenditure, and avoiding any activity which is not favourable for environment. Thanks to the growing awareness about environment, many hotel chains are adopting sustainable travel practices and taking green initiatives. Many big hotel brands are now practicing the concept of responsible luxury. ITC, an Indian luxury hotel brand, has set the benchmark for responsible luxury in the world. It is the most environment-friendly luxury hotel chain in the world.

Investment in entertainment gives good ROI: Nishant Pitti Founders of EaseMyTrip have always kept an innovative expansion approach, which resulted into the company becoming promotion associates and travel partners of more than 17 Bollywood movies. This branding initiative took a boost when Nishant Pitti, CEO and Co-founder of EaseMyTrip.com, entered into film production business. He has co-produced another Bollywood movie ‘Madaari’, which will hit silver screens on 15th July, 2016. Irrfan Khan is playing the lead role in the upcoming movie. The film is based on a real life unfortunate incident that resulted in people getting injured and led to loss of many lives. The film is directed by Nishikant Kamat, who is director of many popular films like Mumbai Meri Jaan, Force, Drishyam and Rocky Handsome. For the production of this film, the director has gone for immense research for a large period of time and grabbed the details of the mishap. TnH interviewed Mr. Pitti to know more about his coproduced movie Madaari and his growing interest in movie production.

v B PREM KUMAR Y

You have associated yourself with the production of a movie again; this is unusual, surprising and unique for an established travel entrepreneur. Kindly throw some light on what lead you to invest in film production? For a businessman, getting into any business is not surprising at all. I always say that I am not only a travel entrepreneur but a business person. Travel is the field from where I started my business journey but I don’t mind investing into other projects that are different from it. Entertainment is a good area for making investments as it doesn’t only give good return-on-investment (ROI) but also helps in getting brand recognition. The business of the film production is really appealing and the charm of Bollywood has left no one untouched from it. As a businessman, I love to do innovative things and my love for the movie production is a part of it. I enjoy doing new experiments to gain profitability for my company and increase its brand visibility. Film production is a glamorous field that lures almost every Indian. Films help the consumers in identifying a particular product or service more than any other advertising campaign. EaseMyTrip.com has already participated in several Bollywood events by being travel partners or promotion partners. Now, we are also coming into film production. The greatest reason behind this initiative was my innate desire to do something creative along with promotion of my company. At present, most of the companies are connecting with Bollywood to promote their product and services through product placements or participating in internal and external promotional

campaigns of films. If all are doing it, then why I should remain an exception. This is how I also came into film production. Please share your vision as a movie producer? Can we expect you to be increasingly involved with Bollywood in the future? I am very new in film production business and want to produce some movies with fresh content not just to entertain the audience but create a long-lasting effect for the same. In fact, I want to make films with a different genre where travel will play an important role in the story. And you can expect me to be more involved in movie production if I get to associate with good stories and talented filmmakers.

Q

Why Madaari? What criterion do you use for movie selection? Why not Madaari? As a producer, I want to offer something fresh to the viewers instead of producing stereotype cinema. The storyline of Madaari is excellent and so are its star-cast and production team. I didn’t make any criteria for selecting a film yet, but I would love to do films in which serious issues have been raised along with providing entertainment to the audience.

Q

Tell me about Madaari in terms of story and star-casts. Also, who is directing the movie? As I said before that Madaari has a brilliant storyline. The story of Madaari deals with the emotional side of a father-son relationship and a man-made disaster that takes away everything from a common man. It is based on a real-life mishap due to which lots of people

got injured and many died. This unfortunate incident happened when the part of an underconstruction overhead metro rail bridge on Andheri-Kurla road collapsed. The leading stars in the film are Irrfan khan, Jimmy Shergil and Tushar Dalvi. focusing on currently? Along with films, my company is primarily focusing on its own business. However, EaseMyTrip.com also participated in BCL 2016 and sponsored Kolkata Babu Moshayes team. In travel segment, we have plans to expand our franchise network in Tier - 2 and Tier - 3 cities of India to be in easy reach of those customers not having credit/debit cards for online transactions. EaseMyTrip has opened its branches at locations like Bangkok, Dubai, Singapore, and Maldives to serve the customers of these locations with efficient and cost-effective services. How do you view the current status of the tourism industry in India, both inbound and outbound tourism? Travel and tourism industry in India is growing. If you talk about year 2015, the industry saw a growth of 7.5%, greater than the 6.9% growth that was actually predicted. The industry also generated great opportunities for jobs and employment. From last few years, India is also emerging as a popular place for traveling as we are focusing on appealing the tourists through campaigns like Incredible India and Atithi Devo Bhava. India never

Q

lacked anything in terms of exploration as it is home to the best beaches, hill stations, religious places and heritage cities. However, visa reforms and infrastructure improvements have helped India in promoting inbound tourism. Along with inbound tourism, India has become one of the fastest-growing outbound travel markets in the world. The reason behind this growth is the increasing population of middle class, which is very much fascinated with the idea of holidaying. The fluctuation in Indian rupees has not at all affected the growing number of Indians travelling overseas and splurging on various things. Thailand, Singapore, Maldives, Dubai and Malaysia are some of the most popular tourist destination among Indian travelers. How has EaseMyTrip performed this summer in terms of sales and bookings? What kind of trends are you noticing

Q

this season? Summer Season has started and there are many places that became preferred choice of the travelers while many being avoided from visiting under the scorching sun or high level of humidity. Summer comes with leaves in schools and kids persuade their parents to go on vacations. Most of them go for holidaying at hill stations and tour packages of destinations like Kashmir, Manali, Shimla and Darjeeling are in great demand. Summer tour packages are primarily assembled to offer the widest range of exotic, cool and scenic destinations across India. Visiting destinations as amazing as Ladakh, as calming as Himachal, as pristine as Andaman or as culturally rich as the North East becomes a trend. I always notice that people seek to visit cool hill stations, untouched beaches and rejuvenating Ayurveda resorts in summer season.

roomsxMl: the robust and dependable supplier of hotel rooms The idea behind the conception of roomsXML has been to become the preferred supplier of hotel rooms. To achieve this avowed goal, roomsXML right from the beginning has been focused on the accommodation segment.

v B PREM KUMAR Y

Since its inception, roomsXML had only two priorities: first, product innovation and the second: after-sales support. “By focusing on these two features, to the best of our abilities, we have ensured our growth. I don’t see a much change in this strategy. You will be surprised to note, that we have a very limited 'sales' team,” said Prakash Bang, MD, roomsXML. Speaking about the success of his company since its inception, Bang said, “The industry’s typical milestones are sales and market share. Thankfully, we are never after these numbers. In our kind of line, the numbers can multiply many times over by just offering credit and discounting.” He added, “Probably, we are the only ones around who don’t offer credit unless backed by a deposit or a bank guarantee. Thanks to our volumes, the pricing we offer is sharp, but we never claim to be the cheapest in the marketplace. A business has to earn a fair profit to be able to sustain and offer efficient service that is so very essential for a B2B like ours.” Band said that roomsXML has been growing at over 50% YOY for the last so many years. “I don’t know whether that’s a good milestone; but we are happy and so are our travel agents! I wish we could introduce a milestone to measure and quantify the 'happiness' levels of our travel agents. Everything would then target around that - to increase the level by another X percent!” said Bang. Over the last few years roomsXML has introduced 11 features that were unique in the industry. Many of the features are yet to be emulated by other systems in the marketplace. “De-duplication of inventory and naming of the rooms as hotels call them have been our all-time best. The innovations in 2016 are under the hat for now - suffice to say that the

travel agents will be delighted with the features as they are bound to make travel agents more efficient and will allow them book hotel rooms with greater confidence,” said Bang. roomsXML has emerged as key partner of travel agents by empowering them with technology and comprehensive accommodation feed. “The idea behind roomsXML was simple – to become the preferred supplier of hotel rooms. For that to happen, we had no option but to focus on the accommodation segment. By choosing a niche area, it was possible to put all our energies and resources in making roomsXML what it is today – robust, therefore dependable,” said Bang. “The idea behind roomsXML was simple – to become the preferred supplier of hotel rooms. For that to happen, we had no option but to focus on the accommodation segment. By choosing a niche area, it was possible to put all our energies and resources in making roomsXML what it is today – robust, therefore dependable,” roomsXML has also aligned with some of the world's best travel technologies companies that can help travel agents to build their own brand - cost effectively and quickly. “While the accommodation feed is provided by roomsXML, other travel products like flights, car hire, cruises, site-seeing, etc. can be pulled from other suppliers / vendors. Of course, the travel agents have the liberty of switching our inventory off, if they find that they are not up to the mark!” said Bang.

Prakash Bang Managing Director, roomsXML

roomsXML works directly with travel agents. It doesn’t have any GSAs. “By doing away with the layer, we ensure that our prices remain sharp and the after sales support punctual. To put it simply, I do believe, that we are travel agent's best bet when it comes to booking hotel rooms & apartments. This may sound like a sales pitch, but I take this opportunity to urge travel agents to try us out. It won't cost them anything, save for a happy experience,” added Bang. As regards its markets, Bang said right now, roomsXML has its offices in USA, UK, UAE, Australia and India. These are essentially its source markets. “Though it is easy to enter into other markets, it is important for us to be able to support the growth. Our after-sales service is regarded as an industry standard. We wouldn’t want to compromise on that. Sustainable growth is what we strongly believe in. Like I said earlier on, we are not in the numbers game,” said Bang. To a question that “what is the USP of your company,” Band said, “To quantify, we have 11 USPs. More are being added periodically!”

Local market insight must to profitable hotel development: Srivastava In business for just over ten years, Clarks Inn Group of Hotels today boasts of national footprints with more than 70 hotels including an operational portfolio of about 40 properties.

v B PREM KUMAR Y

In business for just over ten years, Clarks Inn Group of Hotels today boasts of national footprints with more than 70 hotels including an operational portfolio of about 40 properties In business for just over ten years, Clarks Inn Group of Hotels has emerged as probably the biggest success story in India. Formed in 2005, the hotel company presently boasts of one of the biggest national footprints with more than 70 hotels including an operational portfolio of about 40 properties. In the last couple of years Clarks Inn has several times been recognised with awards and recognition from various reputed publication houses and independent bodies as one of the most prestigious and fastest growing mid-segment brands in India. Clarks Inn witnessed its biggest growth so far in 2015 as it signed and opened a total of 21 new properties last year alone. So where did this incredible growth come from? According to S N Srivastava,

President & Co-founder, Clarks Inn Group of Hotels, most of Clarks Inn’s growth has come from tier II and III markets. “Today the brand is well recognised all over the country and is especially strong in Northern India. And going forward also we see most of our growth coming from tier II, III and even tier IV markets and this is where our incremental focus is,” he said. Now before going into the details of what has made the company so successful in these smaller ties markets, Srivastava, draws attention to some of the major indicators of the “size of the pie” that India as a market is. “Currently at 1.28 billion, India’s population is poised to overtake China’s, reaching about 1.5 billion mark by 2030. Also, according to a study India’s middle class will grow from 5 per cent in 2013 to 50 per cent by 2030, i.e., from about just 60 million in 2013 to close to a whopping 750 million by 2030! Domestic travel that was about 1400 million last year, is expected to be in the region of 3 Billion in the next, say 10 to 12 years. Besides, by 2030,

India’s urban population would have jumped from close to 30 per cent now to about 42 per cent then. These are some of the staggering sizes of pie that we are looking at,” he added. And what’s the success’ secret? “I guess our eyes and ears are closer to the ground and ground realities in smaller tier markets. We work on the merit of the city. Population is one of the key criteria. We are coming up with 100 keys or even larger properties in some of these markets where we see merit. But where we don’t, we even stop the developers from building larger inventory hotel. Local market intelligence and insight is must have to have the right kind of development, which is the hallmark of our success,” he said while concluding.

The travel delight of Gangtok Tourists can get immersed in the world of stupas, monasteries and chorten in Gangtok.

v B SWAATI CHAUDHURY Y

For new-age tourists and history-lovers having a yen for Tibetan Buddhism, the best destination to head for is Gangtok. The first spectacular sight that beholds the eye of onlookers in the wee hours of dawn is the majestic Kanchenjunga towering at a distance. The city holds huge possibilities to know about Tibetan Buddhism and one can spend the entire day discovering the sights of a number of age-old, famed monasteries. If you have a penchant to visit some of the renowned monasteries of Gangtok that offer info on Tibetan Buddhism, then read on‌ There is the 200-year old Enchey monastery at Chandmari in the east of Gangtok city that stands as one of the major recognized gompas of Sikkim. Established by Dhrubthob Karpo- the tantric who was well-known for his flying powers, the sprawling monastery was set up way back in 1840 on the lines of sacred mountain of five peaks in China. One can catch glimpses of images of a plethora of gods and goddesses in the monastery. From here, head straight to Deorali bazaar that has the renowned Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. A tour of Gangtok is incomplete without a visit to Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. The reputed Buddhist institute serves as a treasure-trove of Tibetan, Lepcha and Sanskrit manuscripts. The institute serves as a seat of learning of Buddhist philosophy and has an amazing range of 200 Buddhist icons and rare Thankas. There are statues of Lord Buddha in clay, wood and metal in different postures that highlight the varied activities he took up in Abhaya Mudra, Dhyan Mudra and Varada Mudra. One can take a peek at the colourful paintings portraying the 12 deeds of Lord Buddha. It is at the institute that visitors get to know more about guru Padmasambhava, renowned as the second Buddha who was born in 8th century at Orgyen in Swat Valley of Afghanistan. It was due to the exceptional efforts of Guru Padmasambhava that Buddhism gained foothold in Tibet. Besides, there a r e

multiple tantric figures of Vajrayana Buddhism at the institute. The statue of Sarvajaya, better known as the goddess of victory has been sculpted in brass around 19th century. The statue was first found at Kundeling temple in Tibet. There are statues of celestial Boddhisattvas who were the followers of Lord Buddha. The most popular female deity in Tibetan Buddhism is Tara. It is widely believed in Tibetan Buddhism that White Tara bestows health and wealth while Green Tara provides protection from the fears of life. The display of seven water bowl offerings form another interesting facet of the institute. In keeping with the tradition, these water bowls were set out on a Buddhist altar every day as a mark of respect and gratitude to Lord Buddha. Quite near the institute is the Do-Drul Chorten or the stupa with a rising spire plated in gold. The chorten has been the creation of the revered Trullishi Rimpoche, the leader of a particular sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The chorten is surrounded by 108 prayer wheels that are turned by devout Buddhists. This is incidentally the place where lamas are groomed. After a whirlwind tour of monasteries, it’s time to visit Banjakhri waterfalls at Ranka that provides fascinating views of stunning natural beauty. Lying around 10 km in the east of Gangtok, the gurgling waterfall has water gushing with a huge force. Jakhri in Nepali implies physician, in Rai community, it is known as Mangpa while Limboos call padangma. There are statues of jakhri, mangpa and padangma curing an ailing patient in the premises of the waterfall.

How to make most of travelling in the lean season You must be wondering what is lean season? Well, in the tourism world, any period of travel classically falls into the three categories: low season (also called as off-season or lean period), shoulder season and high season (also called as peak season). In India, the monsoon months and exam season are typically categorised as the lean period. This lean season or period is very beneficial for travellers looking for budget vacations with all the amenities. To guide you in this regard, TnH has listed some of ways to take best advantage of lean season. Choose the time: As mentioned earlier, the most important part of lean season travel is picking the right time to go for vacation at places around in India or around the world. For this, it is important to know lean seasons of various destinations. Once you know the particular time of the destination where you wish to go for vacations than it will easier to for you to book hotels at reasonable budget. Select the right place: During September, Goa and Kerala (which are some of the best tourist destinations in India) offer great bargains. So, for you it is quite possible to plan a trip to such destinations at quite economical price in August and September (peak season there due to the lean season there). These two destinations are just suggestions; you can hunt for your own place for vacations as well. Look for best deals on airfare: During lean season also means that airfare to places, mainly popular with tourists becomes lower than usual. This will surely save your money on travelling from one place to another. To deal with the season, many of the airlines provide multiple offers made available (especially

by budget airlines). Taking benefit of that, you can get a good deal for a trip during your selected period of travel. Look for local options: Prior to making any booking, be it hotel or flight; always check out if famous local places will be open during your period of stay. For instance, in India, most of the sanctuaries are shut to the public during the monsoon, as are shacks at famous beach getaways. With this knowledge you are well informed for choice regarding whether you still want to visit this place or go to another place. More Resourceful: Always remember that one of the best perks of making travel plans during lean season is that you can get best of everything in your budget. You can negotiate with shopkeepers for better bargains, get local cabs to give you a better rate and persuade tour operators to offer you a discount. In fact, you can use the extra money to make your stay longer at a particular place or visit more in the neighborhood. So, what are you waiting for? Get ready to take great benefits of lean season and make your holidays memorable!

Q

What is extraordinary about Slovenia as tourist destination?

Slovenia has 20, 000 sq km of diversity: from the Alps to the sea, from the Pannonian Plain to the Karst region. Slovenia, the fourth smallest member of the European Union in terms of area, boasts an extraordinary diversity of landscapes in a relatively small territory. Easy access to this diversity is a particular advantage: it is possible to start the day in the mountains, with their sports and recreation centres, continue it on a farm in a green mountain pasture or valley, or perhaps on the Adriatic coast, and before it gets to evening the tourists can be pampered at a top-flight thermal spa center offering a sophisticated range of health and wellness services. Slovenia has 24 distinct gastronomic regions and 14 wine districts. Relaxation, entertainment and culture are provided by internationally famous festivals and other events – 365 days a year. Slovenia is therefore a country of green breaks – and recreation in the countryside all year round. In winter, there are dozens of winter sports centers catering for Alpine and Nordic skiers, ski tourers, snowboarders and other winter recreation-seekers. In summer, Slovenia is popular with lovers of water sports on rivers, lakes and in the sea. Slovenia has 10 golf courses set in a variety of different landscapes. There are also adrenaline parks, riding centers and horse-riding trails, and paragliding and ballooning centers. A particular feature of Slovenia, and its strongest tourism trump card, is its thermal springs, around which 14 accredited spa health resorts have developed over the centuries and an even greater number of thermal wellness centres. Health and beauty programmes are based on pampering with many different natural resources and also include opportunities for active leisure.

Q

Why do you think that Slovenia is good destination for Indian visitors?

Slovenia is Green, Active, Healthy and in Harmony with nature for the two million people who live here and for everyone who visits Slovenia. Slovenia is unique country because of its variety, heritage and some places that simply you must see. I would suggest every visitor to visit the capital of Slovenia-Ljubljana, Postojna Cave, Lake Bled and the dream city-Piran. Slovenia is also the biggest star among the most demanding lovers of good food and wine. The capital of Ljubljana is Green Capital of Europe in 2016. It is a city with a big heart that its citizens like to share. In the last few years, one could hardly follow the placing of the Slovenian capital on hot lists of reputable media and the biggest tourism publishers. In the green capital of Europe 2016, one immediately feels at home. Here, you can spend the time you need in other capitals for transport from one part of the city to the other to walk along the Ljubljanica River, enjoy coffeehouse sweets and chat at the green market.

The old city of Ljubljana is also the place where shoppers can enjoy their time. There are many specialised boutique and shops for all passionate shoppers. Postojna Cave is the largest cave in the “classic karst” and the most visited show cave in Europe. It is a network of 20 kilometres of passages, galleries and chambers into which experienced guides have accompanied more than 35 million visitors in the last 188 years. In 1872 railway lines were laid in the cave; electricity arrived in 1884. Today, you begin your visit aboard the cave train; the electric lighting allows you to admire the size and splendour of the underground world, where the geological past is recorded in a unique manner. Visitors to the cave are dazzled by a wealth of speleothems: calcite formations, stalactites and stalagmites abounding in a variety of shapes, colours and age. Bled Lake - Slovenia has only one island but its uniqueness makes it more attractive than many an archipelago. Sheltered by picturesque mountains, the island reigns in the middle of an Alpine lake. Its charm has made it a symbol for centuries of a town to which guests from all over the world love to return. Many honeymooners are married in the church on the island and they visit this church every year to promise each other their faithful. Cosmopolitan seekers of diversity and beauty, of relaxation and inspiration, tranquillity and the challenges of sport will find at Bled Lake a multitude of opportunities. Walking and coaching trails around the lake, traditional boats, ringing the island’s wishing bell, the castle treasures, nearby ski pistes, mountain trails, golf courses, hunting, fishing, the casino, congress facilities – all these are but fragments of Bled’s attraction, which is truly worth experiencing. Piran - the dream city One of the most photogenic cities in the Mediterranean, Piran has preserved its unsurpassed charm. Enter the picturesque Piran, get to know its rich history and culture, and listen to the stories of our people. The proximity to the sea and the rich history, which is mirrored in the architecture, draw magical scenes. In Piran, you will feel as though you have stepped right into a picture postcard. You will be charmed by the narrow streets within the old town wall. In the main square, you will be greeted by the statue of the most famous man in Piran, the well-known Giuseppe Tartini, composer and virtuoso violinist who was born in a house, just steps from the square. On the pier, you can catch sight of fisherman unravelling fishing net. A market woman from Piran will have just delivered vegetables, fresh from her garden, to the market. Locals sitting by the sea, chatting and listening to sounds of the sea, greet you with a nod. Having coffee, lunch or dinner surrounded by sounds of the sea will ensure pleasant memories for a long time to come.

Q

How simple is the visa process of Slovenia for Indian travellers? How about first time travellers?

Schengen countries have harmonized policy regarding the visa process regulated by Visa Code and the Handbook for the processing of visa applications. In the framework of the local Schengen cooperation we are trying further to harmonize the visa process and its requirements as e.g. recognized insurance agencies, the list of supporting documents, exchange rates, processing time etc. To bring service closer to applicants all over India we signed the agreement with VFS that opened six Slovenian VACs (Visa Application Centres) in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi. As extra service, it is possible to use also VACs in other cities or request mobile service when agents of VFS visit applicant at the location by his choice also for scan of fingerprints which is mandatory from November last year. Also, first time travellers are welcome guests, however, they are invited for personal interview as prescribed by Visa Code.

Q

How does Slovenia’s visa service remain competitive?

Although we issued more visas each year we are also trying to shorten the processing time. Applicants are encouraged to apply at least 15 days before departure to Slovenia, however, our processing time in average is now around three days. We shall try hard to shorten even this time. How important is the Indian outbound market for Slovenia? How many Indian tourists visited Slovenia last year? Foreign markets in which the STB is present through promotional activities are divided by our policy in main tree groups which are: Key European Markets – these are the key incoming markets which in 2011 together generated over 70% of all overnight stays

by foreign visitors. They are: Germany, Austria, Italy, the Benelux countries, Croatia, Serbia, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Russia and Ukraine. Other European Markets – these are the other European markets: Hungary, France, the Nordic countries, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Spain, Israel and Switzerland. Development of Overseas Markets – these are new, growing markets. They are: the USA, Canada, Japan, China, Korea and other overseas markets. Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SORS) does not collect data for Indian visitors separately. India is part of the group Other Asian Countries. There were 69.600 tourist arrivals from visitors from Other Asian Countries in 2015 (10 % more than in 2014) and 135.800 overnight stays (12 % more than in 2014). How is the air-connectivity between the two countries? Slovenia's "Airport JožefPučnik" in Ljubljana, is connected with all capital airports in Europe. There is connection on daily basis with Vienna, Frankfurt Munich, Zurich or Bruxelles. With some capitals the connection even three or more times per day. Flights from European capitals to Ljubljana are short – approximately one hour or even less. Even more - in 2015 there was signed a special Agreement in Cosharing between Slovenian Air Carrier Adria Airways and Air India. However, with this Agreement also the distance between our two countries is becoming smaller.

FestIvals arouNd the world

Stonehenge Summer Solstice Location: Wiltshire, England Date: June 18, 2016 Druids, hippies, New Age prophets and mystery seekers gather at Stonehenge to worship the sun during the northern hemisphere's shortest night of the year. The mythological stone sculptures of Wiltshire County, England attract thousands to watch the sunrise at Stonehenge on June 21st. Whatever is the reason, the collective spiritual moment of watching that sunrise, with or without the sun, is absolutely magical. The festival invites Neopagans and dashingly-dressed druids conduct ancient rites in spontaneous circles. Drummers fill the air with tribal beats to worship the solstice.

Astral Harvest Location: Driftpile, Alberta, Canada Dates: Jun 30 - Jul 3, 2016 EDM, yoga and hula hooping converge under the midnight sun. Set in the hinterlands of Alberta, under an enormous sky amid white spruce and poplar trees, with hardly a town in sight, Astral Harvest is way off the beaten path. And that's the charm for some 2,000 fans who journey here: a remote, unplugged backdrop for the festival's feel-good hybrid of EDM rave and trippy workshops. Fans arrive in long, flowy skirts and peace sign t-shirts. Some dressed as aliens, while others don faux fur trapper hats and superhero costumes. Many carry glowing hula-hoops that light up the night.

World Bodypainting Festival Location: Portschach, Austria Dates: Jun 27 - Jul 3, 2016 The weird and wonderful world of body art. Although, the name divulges what goes on, there is far more to this visual treasure trove than you might think. One of the most colorful festivals you are ever likely to see, the World Bodypainting Festival has wowed audiences since its creation in 1998. This bizarre event takes place over the course of a week each year in the picturesque south of Austria. Tasked with the job of organizing a summer event in the town of Seeboden, Alex Barendregt, (a local travel agefromt and founder of the festival) chose the body art theme after seeing an interesting photo one day. The human body has been used as a canvas by people and from all across the world for thousands of years.
