We are already midway through 2016 and as the season turns and the scorching summer intensifies, I am sure most of you are planning to flee to cooler climates. So this month, we give you holiday alternatives both at home and abroad. We have featured trips that range from Jordan (pg. 24) to Maldives (pg. 36), and while we hop across the globe in search of the best, we also stop by gorgeous Indian destinations like Gujarat (pg. 30). In addition, we take a quick look at ongoing events and festivals around the world (pg. 40) that tourists can experience and enjoy. You will also find our cover story ‘Best summer holiday packages that you can afford’ (pg. 18), devised especially to help you save this vacation season. Finally, don’t

miss out on our guide of the best credit cards for collecting frequent flier miles and other travel goodies on pg. 39. I hope reading our fun, colorful and informative features gets you excited enough to visit these destinations. Our aim as always is to help make the travel bug bite! I recently read somewhere that “We travel because distance and difference are the secret tonic to creativity and growth. When we get home, home is still the same, but something in our minds has changed, and that changes everything.” I think this aphorism explains why we at Travel and Hospitality do what we do very accurately and concisely. It is certainly no accident that the profession I chose has provided me with a pretext for travelling but even without a reason or excuse I suggest you do the same. Have a great summer!

LUFTHANSA GROUP CHOOSES AMADEUS TO DELIVER NEW LOAD CONTROL SYSTEM Ensuring a stable and safe load control – or in other words, that the weight and balance of the aircraft is optimised – is one of the main operational challenges airlines face. Load control plays a vital role in increasing efficiency, on-time performance and reducing fuel costs. And so with this in mind, Lufthansa Group and Amadeus have reached an agreement that will see the group’s airlines adopt Amadeus Altéa Departure Control Flight Management, starting with Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo. Amadeus Altéa Departure Control Flight Management automates aircraft load control and optimises every flight departure by analysing the passenger and cargo load, calculating fuel requirements and defining the optimal aircraft load distribution. Once implemented across Lufthansa Group, the system will optimise loads for the group’s 3,000 daily flights. In 2015, Lufthansa Group’s airlines carried over 100 million passengers, whereas Lufthansa Cargo carried 1.6 million tons of freight and post.

Safety Assessment is conducted and documented for even the smallest changes at the airport. Airport Environmental committees are constituted at every airport which has representation from every stakeholder at the Airport and district authorities. The prime objective of the committee

is managing environment to mitigate bird hazard, which pose a serious threat for aviation. The other issues, the Committee is dealing with comprise of aircraft noise, aircraft engine emissions and air quality at airports, environmental management systems, ground water management, waste management, wildlife management, resource management and site remediation at airports. across the wonderful desert. Also, enjoy camp out under the clear and star-filled sky. Moreover, the adventure-seekers can enjoy their rock-climbing skills on the majestic rock formations including the Jabal Rum, the second-highest peak in Jordan.

Petra Petra is a famed archaeological site, the Nabatean capital dating to around 300 B.C.E. This fabled “rose red city, half as old as time” and is undeniably the most precious treasure and greatest tourist attraction of Jordan. Set in a thin valley with tombs, monuments and temples carved into the surrounding pink sandstone cliffs, Petra earns its nickname, the "Rose City.” It is a huge, unique city, carved into the side of the Wadi Musa Canyon centuries ago by the Nabataeans, who turned it into a significant junction for the spice and silk routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Greece and Rome. The most intricate building in Petra is Al Khazneh (“The Treasury”), carved out of a sandstone rock face, along with its massive façade dwarfing everything around it.

Red Sea Diving / Snorkeling & Dead Sea Red Sea Dive Center here offers extremely professional diving services with traditional Jordanian hospitality. This center caters for divers who want personalized attention with a professional approach. However, you don’t have to be a professional diver to come nose-to-nose with a turtle: colorful coral reefs, multi-coloured and tropical fishes swimming just underneath the surface of this warmest and clearest of seas. Without any doubt, the Dead Sea is the most incredible place in the world. Also, the Jordan Rift Valley, which at the Dead Sea is over 400 m below sea level, is a vivid, striking landscape.

Wadi Rum Next attraction is the Wadi Rum valley which features incredible wildlife and noteworthy rock formations. Situated in the country of Jordan, this valley is an impressive tourist destination. Here, you can take a ride on camel or horse

Jordan is an Arab nation situated on the eastern bank of the Jordan River. This beautiful nation is a kaleidoscope of nature reserves, ancient monuments, sand dunes and seaside resorts. This nation also offers health tourism (mainly focused in the Dead Sea area), education tourism, mountaineering, scuba diving in Aqaba's coral reefs, shopping in different colorful cities and exclusive pop-culture tourism. The most interesting thing while vacationing in Jordan is to experience new atmosphere with the Arab culture during the vacation to Jordan. In this article, TnH would like to suggest some of the must visit attractions in Jordan when you come here…

Roman Theatre of Amman A major piece of ancient architecture in Jordan, “the Roman Theatre of Amman” was constructed during the control of Marcus Aurelius in the 2nd century AD. It is a large and sharply raked theatre that could seat about 6,000 people. The theatre is cut into the hillside and oriented north to keep the sun off the audience. It was constructed on three tiers: ‘the rulers, used to sit closest to the action’, ‘the military used to sit in the middle section’, and ‘the general public used to sit on the highest section’. However, being far from the stage, the actors could be clearly heard, to the sheerness of the theatre.

Qasr Kharana Qasr Kharana is amongst the best-known desert castles situated in present-day eastern Jordan. This was constructed sometime before during early 8th century. It is one of the earliest examples of Islamic architecture in the region. It is estimated may be due to limited supply of water Qasr Kharana sustained only temporary usage, otherwise there are different theories concerning the function of this castle, it could have been a meeting place for Bedouins or a fortress. Besides, Petra, Wadi Rum, Red Sea Diving / Snorkeling & Dead Sea, Mada'in Saleh, Roman Theatre of Amman and Qasr Kharana, explorers can also visit Jerash Theatres and Siq Canyon.

ALILA SEMINYAK – ON THE BEACH AND MAKING WAVES!

By Mandira Rai

Location! Location! Location! So when someone mentioned the spanking new resort Alila in Seminyak, Bali to me and said it had a good location, I really didn’t realize what ‘good’ meant till I got there. When you grab the last empty beachfront location in the hippest part of town, share a common wall with none other than the ‘it’ place to be in Bali – Potato Head beach club (just in case you were wondering) – and the iconic Ku De Ta is a (long) walk away, you’re location is more than good – its fantastic! Seminyak’s famous boutiques, cafes, art galleries and restaurants are all at close proximity. And any place that can’t be accessed on foot can be easily reached by local taxis, all readily (and very cheaply) available. So there you have it – an address that can’t be beat.

Food for the Soul Now that I’m done with the location, the most natural progression for me would be to move on to the breakfast here. Because, it is better than fantastic. It’s

28

unbelievable! Any hotel that gives me flax seed toast, almond butter, quinoa porridge, mashed avocado on grilled sour dough bread and raw zucchini pad Thai for breakfast has me hooked for life! Done with the overdone croissants, sausages and pancakes at other hotels, I just lovvved the breakfast here, which excelled in taste, quality ingredients and variety. The food at this resort, in general, was very good. The breakfast, however, had in its on-site restaurant on an al fresco terrace completely stole the show.

The Space Staring right into the Indian Ocean, this airy 240-room resort features floor-to-ceiling glass, vertical gardens, clean lines, minimalist design and natural ventilation like you won’t believe it. The fact that renowned architect Gaurang Khemka and his team in Singapore have stuck to Alila’s long-standing commitment to the environment is evident all through this gorgeous property!

Tots in Tow Like any beachfront resort, Alila too, with its sprawling sandy beach, is bound to be a big hit with the family-friendly crowd. Multiple pools on the resort add to the charm. What is proving to be a runaway success, however, is the resort’s kids’ club. This cheery space is stocked with toys, games,

puzzles, books and craft supplies to keep kids engaged. Elevated wooden platforms to run around in and a slide add to the fun. For the older lot, the room comes with televisions, computers and gaming consoles. This supervised space is overseen by staff and the kids are happily looked after, while you pack in some quality ‘me’ time. The kids’ club hosts hourly kid-friendly activities that include treasure hunts, puppet making, bowling, food painting, story telling, kite making and more. Alila is equally loyal to its adult guests. Hang out at the ‘adult-only pool’, partake in a complimentary yoga class or cruise the neighbourhood on the adult bicycles. Of course, there is always the good ol’ Spa Alila, always a surefire way to iron out those kinks. Parents have the option of indulging in destination dining around the resort after the kids hit the bed. A top of the line gym adds the perfect finishing touch. The resort has also crafted unique experiences for adults like cocktail making classes, shopping with personal assistants, temple visits, potion making, beach hopping and more. In between laps in one of its three pools, don’t forget to check out Pura Dalem Segara, the Balinese temple that sits in the middle of the resort. And definitely don’t forget to find a place where their vintage 1980 Volkswagen Kombi can drive you to. Those of you with he urge to splurge will love the 811 square meter three-bedroom penthouse, with its own infinity lap pool, right above the beach.

The Final Verdict This latest addition to the Alila family, which lays claim to four other Bali properties including its flagship Alila Uluwatu, is 10 km to Ngurah Rai International Airport from its southern Seminyak location. The good thing is that once you’re here, choose to either be in the eye of the storm in one of Bali’s trendiest enclaves. Or quietly watch a flaming orange sun become one with the ocean, a cocktail in hand at the hotel’s beach bar. A tough call. Always!
