GOVERNMENT ALLOWS FOREIGN AIRLINES TO INVEST UP TO 49% IN AIR INDIA The Union Cabinet recently approved many amendments in India's FDI policy, including allowing foreign airlines to invest up to 49% under approval route in Air India. The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently gave approval to a number of amendments in the FDI Policy, with an aim to liberalize and simplify the FDI policy and improve ease of doing business in the country. As per the extant policy, foreign airlines are allowed to invest under Government approval route in the capital of Indian companies operating scheduled and non-scheduled air transport services, up to the limit of 49% of their paid-up capital. However, this provision was not applicable to Air India, therefore foreign airlines could not invest in Air India. It has now been decided to do away with this restriction and allow foreign airlines to invest up to 49% under approval route in Air India subject to the conditions that: 1.) Foreign investment(s) in Air India including that of foreign Airline(s) shall not exceed 49% either directly or indirectly, and 2.) substantial ownership and effective control of Air India shall continue to be vested in Indian National. With this decision of the government, Air India can attract investment from foreign airlines/global investors when government will start divesting its shares in the airline, enabling the airline to get higher value for its shares. The Congress has opposed allowing FDI in Air India. Congress Spokesperson RPN Singh said that UPA Government had kept Air India out of FDI because Air India is India's national carrier. It can be recalled that in September 2012, the UPA Government had allowed foreign airlines to pick up 49 % equity in domes-

New FDI policy allows foreign airlines to invest up to 49% in Air India Substantial ownership, effective control of Air India will continue to be vested in Indian National. Air India had a total debt of about Rs 48,877 crore at the end of March 2017. Of the total debt, about Rs 17,360 crore were aircraft loans and Rs 31,517 crore were working capital loans. The earlier policy allowed foreign airlines to invest in Indian airlines barring Air India A Parliamentary Committee recently suggested that the government should review its decision to privatise/disinvest Air India. The Committee advises the Government to explore the possibility of “an alternative to disinvestment of our national carrier which is our national pride.”

tic airlines. Criticizing the UPA government's decision , then BJP spokesperson and former Civil Aviation Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the decision to allow FDI in civil aviation was to “please a failed businessman.” The move comes at a time when the government is working on the modalities for strategic disinvestment of the lossmaking Air India and is expected to attract more bidders for the airline. A group of ministers is in the process of finalizing the contours for the proposed strategic stake sale in the national carrier and expression of interest is by TNH DESK likely to be invited from bidders soon.

Innovative Ways to Adopt Technology in Travel Business Technology has permeated every aspect of our waking lives—and since travel is such a huge part of our existence, it has naturally transformed the industry in several ways. We examine some of the most innovative ways in which travel companies can successfully use and adopt technology in their businesses.

v B NEHA KIRPAL Y

1. Big Data and Predictive Analysis: Big Data is essentially a technology-based work methodology that uses past information to predict future events. It allows one to intelligently predict what will happen tomorrow and to access that information. Thus, in addition to information based on the forecasts of a business’ computer system, one can access reliable information on what will happen in the future, the number of reservations that will be cancelled and other variables that help adequately meet human resource needs, streamline management, and deliver a better service. For instance, Hopper uses Big Data to predict and analyze airfare. Google Now is also somewhat of a travel agent, suggesting flights, rental cars and hotel reservations based on a traveller’s time and location. 2. Internet of Things: Life today is incomplete without a smartphone. This has given rise to solutions such as positioning beacons that can be used to identify mobile

FEATURE based interface, allowing them to book plane tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars and more. PackPoint tells users what to pack based on length of travel, weather at the destination and activities planned during the trip.

phones and their owners with ease. Mobile apps are then used to contact users at given points, thereby generating an interaction with a place, hotel, leisure area, city, museum, etc. Thus, it is possible to determine how much time a customer will have to wait to be served or how many have left because of the wait. This information can then be used to reorganize and streamline management, increasing the return and improving service. It will likewise be possible to monitor production processes in order to organize and distribute tasks more efficiently based on need. 3. Apps: Given the popularity of smartphones, it has become imperative for each travel business to have its own app. There is so much to learn from some innovative apps in the travel and hospitality circuit. While Peek puts a tour guide in your phone, HotelTonight is a last-minute hotel booking tool. AnyRoad helps connect users to guides and thus, avoid travel agencies. Discover & Deliver has a service that uncovers the source of luxury items in hotel rooms and then offers them for sale on their site. Pleasebringme has a service where locals can request items from tourists and vice versa. Soverinn asks tourists to enter their ideal holiday location preferences and then encourages local hotels to offer packages and deals personalized to their preferences. Further, on HelloGbye, users can verbally ask or type in their travel wishes and the app will display a number of itinerary options including airfare and hotels. Lola users interact with agents through a chat-

4. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR): The use of VR and AR is starting to take hold in travel industry content marketing and is providing new ways of engaging customers at each stage of their travels. Airlines have been using VR to showcase their cabins in order to sell upgrades and premium amenities. For a traveller selecting a hotel room, an immersive experience elevates the traditional 360° virtual tour available on most websites. 5. TravelBots: A TravelBot, or ChatBot, allows travellers to gain assistance with booking travel through a messaging platform such as Facebook Messenger. Through it, travellers can enter their destination, travel dates and how many nights. The bot makes recommendations and the traveller can select a hotel and move forward with the booking themselves. Once the booking is complete, the bot will send the traveller their itinerary. 6. Wearable Devices: Travel brands are increasingly using wearable technology to provide a connected and personalized guest experience. Smartwatch enabled travellers to board a plane or unlock hotel rooms with a flick of the wrist. Stored preferences allow for personalized service, navigation of large event spaces and ease of payment. The wearable tech trend not only allows for an elevated guest experience but it also streamlines services and lowers costs. 7. Voice Interfaces (VI): AI and Chatbots mean the transformation to VI travel booking is inevitable. On an enterprise level, travel management companies will be able to benefit as interactions with apps evolve and become more natural. Potentially, businesses will have the ability to access the same information one can see on the screen and manage operations in situations where accessing the screen is not possible.

INTERVIEW

We have to create an atmosphere of trust among our members: VP-TAAI Sanjay Narula, the newly elected Vice President of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) said that members of TAAI have entrusted the new team with a huge responsibility by their overwhelming support in a very keenly fought election. In an interview with TnH, Narula says that the new team of TAAI has a lot to do and to start with, "we have to create an atmosphere of trust among our members and ensure that what we do is in their best interest."

v B PREM KUMAR

Q Y

You recently got elected as the Vice President of TAAI. What issues have been closer to your heart, and as the second senior most officebearer of the Association, how are you going to address them? I agree the members have entrusted us and our team with a responsibility by this overwhelming show of love and support in a very keenly fought election. I am indeed very grateful and take this responsibility very seriously. TAAI has a lot to do and for a start we have to create an atmosphere of trust among our members and ensure that what we do is in their best interest. We will work to grow the respect of each and every travel agent and tour operator in this country. We have to collaborate effectively with all stakeholders and see to it that our interests are protected. The members of TAAI approximately control almost 80 % of the tourism products which are distributed in India and we have to make it count.

Q

According to you, what are the issues and challenges India's travel agents are facing today? For a start we have to get complete clarity on the GST rollout for the travel agents. TAAI did take the lead in addressing this issue and we have been meeting with members regularly and also doing presentation by top experts in the field for them to consume the extensive information available and also implement that correctly in their offices. We cannot claim to have addressed each and every issue but the start has been good and much appreciated.

TAAI members dominate the space as the ticketing agents of airlines, outbound and inbound tourism from and into India and we will make sure that each and every stakeholder, be it the airlines, hotels, tourism boards , government, trade fairs, media and their representations have proper access and give their best to our members .

Q

With the role of technology growing fast, how do you think travel agents can survive?

ally easy but the transparency it offers also makes it very difficult to earn our margins. The service and cost associated with the interaction that our members offer to the customers, needs to be recognized and rewarded suitably and we hope we can move forward on that aggressively.

Q

What new opportunities do you see for travel agents? How can they diversify their businesses? IATA is to introduce the New Distribution Capability (NDC). This brings with it challenges and also opportunities to be able to sell a diverse range of tourism offering which TAAI intends to partner with and bring an aggregator which will structure value for our membership. Our team is focusing on educating the frontline teams in new offerings and training them on destinations. Our clients can experience and there are several programs being developed to ensure that these things happen before the start of the peak holiday season.

Q

INTERVIEW According to you, what should TAAI do to empower its members to prepare for future?

We have created and developed the various councils amongst ourself to look after each activity which affects our business. The Airlines Council will seek regular interaction and discussion and address member issues. We as office bearers are having an APJC meeting shortly. We are looking at reworking the members default insurance program. The Allied Services Council will effectively engage to bring better coordination with government and the tourism ministry and all the Foreign Missions here and seek to create a more effective outreach with the Visa Program operators such as VFS Global and the like. We will be reviewing our co-operation and the MOUs with the various tourism boards and look at increasing our efforts in this space and creating an opportunity of seeking new enhanced bilateral agreements to seek two way traffic, create destinations etc.

nations. The state has the largest inland salt water lake in Asia- Chilka Lake. The latest additions in the ecotourism sector are waterfalls in the state. Nitin Bhanu Das Jawle, Director, Odisha Tourism commented, “Odisha has nearly 34 per cent of forested area and the largest tract of the Eastern Ghats is in the state. The most sought-after, emerging ecotourist destination has been Simlipal National Park followed by Bhittarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary and Chilka Lake. We are boosting Satkosia Gorge in a big way. There are a couple of forests on Marine Drive Road connecting Puri with Konark. South Indian food has always been the favourites of most of us, the Delhiites. Old or new, small or big, does not matter if we get some tasty authentic food. Guruprasad Udupi, an old restaurant in South Delhi serves some of the most delicious dishes and is managing to pull crowds with its authentic taste. It’s not hard to spot Udupi when you are in the Munirka Market complex. It’s just a few minutes' walk from Munirka Bus

The space is quite simple in appearance and you feel like stepping into the nineties ambiance. Simple seating arrangements make you feel comfortable and homely. The service is also up to the mark, well-dressed, smiling and attentive waiters are always eager to help you have a great time. Thanjavur paintings adorn most of the walls in the

The restaurant was started by Akash’s father, V Ramachandra Rao almost 30 years back and at that time it was the one of the few authentic South Indian restaurants in Delhi. Today Udupi is one of the most popular restaurants serving not only Dosas and Idlies but also North Indian and Chinese cuisines. The south Indian dishes are still the loved ones here at Udupi. "When my father started it, it was serving only South Indian and to provide the authentic taste he brought some cooks from our native place, Udupi. It was the taste, which fetched customers every time," informed Aakash Rao. Today, the restaurant has three sections; one for South Indian food, second one offers North Indian food and the third section is dedicated to Chinese cuisine. All the three kitchens are open. Q

Please tell us about current relations between India and Ethiopia. How has this relationship got strengthened in recent years? The relations between the two country, India and Africa are among the best ones. Ethiopia was the first country in Africa to establish diplomatic relation with India. We established diplomatic relationship with India immediately after India's Independence in 1948. That time Ethiopia was only recognized and independent country in Africa. Since then our relations have been growing strong. This year the both countries are going to celebrate 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relation. With rise of India as an economic power, many Indian businessmen flocked to Africa for business opportunities and investment. Ethiopia has emerged as one of the best investment destinations for Indian businessmen. When we go back to history, India and Ethiopia share many similarities. Our rela-

tions go back 3000 years. Ethiopia is an ancient country as is India, so we have many common similarities, which make us people of similar destiny. People-topeople contacts and relations between the two countries started 3000 years ago when Ethiopians were trading things like ivory, gold, silk, spices etc, with India. So we have a long history of ties.

We have high regard for the Indo-African historical relations among which the IndoEthiopian relation is one of the best. We are trying to enhance this relation as comprehensive strategic partnership. India is heavily supporting development activities in Ethiopia by providing a line of credit and also support many of our endeavors both in bilateral and multilateral

"Ethiopia is a land of many exotic historical sites. Just like India, Ethiopia is also an ancient country. It is a land of origins. Even the human kind originated from Ethiopia. Many archeologists have agreed about discovery of first walking man in Ethiopia."

Q

How do you want to further strengthen the relations between the two countries? We are working closely with government of India. There is strong bondage and relations between the two countries. The constant efforts of our embassy in New Delhi is bringing fruits. We regard India as our strategic partner.

arenas. We can say that Indian support to Ethiopian initiatives is enormous. Capacity building is one of the primary areas we are getting enormous support from India. Many Ethiopian scholars are taking part in different Indian universities. Many Indian professors are going to Ethiopia to teach in higher educational institutions. So

our relations are going stronger every day.

Q

Tell us about the tourism potential of the country. Ethiopia is a land of many exotic historical sites. Just like India, Ethiopia is also an ancient country. It is a land of origins. Even the human kind originated from Ethiopia. Many archeologists have agreed about discovery of first walking man in Ethiopia. Other things like coffee also originated in Ethiopia. It was found in the province of Kaffa. We have many ancient historical sites. We have 10 UNESCO world-heritage sites in Ethiopia and many other historical and cultural sites are in the process of getting UNESCO world-heritage recognition. We have very sound and special cultural heritage, exotic sites; our country is very beautiful; our people are very hospitable. Ours is a land of many opportunities. So those who want to see exotic historical and religious sites must visit Ethiopia for incredible experiences.

Q

Why should Indians visit Ethiopia? First of all we are requesting Indians to visit Ethiopia and see our exotic historical sites. As Indians love history, they must visit Ethiopia to see wonderful historical sites which almost look like the Indian historical sites. As you have seen, many Indian historical sites are full of indigenous knowledge, so are the Ethiopian historical sites. We request Indian scholars and students to visit those historical sites. Apart from the cultural similarities, our family values are same. As in India, family ties are very strong in Ethiopia.

Q

How do you look at the bilateral tourism potentials between India and Ethiopia? India and Ethiopia have signed bilateral agreements in areas such as culture, trade and investment. These agreements are being steadily implemented. We have been inviting Indians to come Africa as the continent has historical ties with India and offers lots of opportunities. As

40

Ethiopia is a gateway to Africa, Ethiopia can be a bridge between Africa and India. As per our bilateral arrangement, people-to-people contact is very important. There is direct flights between India and Ethiopia. This is the biggest advantage for Indian businessmen. There are 28 weekly flights from India to Ethiopia: 14 flights from Delhi and 14 from Mumbai. Indian tourists and scholars should visit Ethiopia to see our exotic archeological and historical heritage sites and cultural diversity. Staying in Ethiopia is not very expensive. We can offer Indians every kind of facility.

Q

What is the current state of tourism exchange between the two countries?

TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY | FEBRUARY 2018

Many Ethiopians are visiting India for different purposes such as business, education, medical and tourism. We have strong trade ties with India. We are importing a lot of materials from India. Medical tourism from Ethiopia to India is growing fast. Many Ethiopians are visiting Indian hospitals for quality and affordable medical care. Government of India through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is supporting our students to get education in Indian educational institutions. Our Ethiopian government is also sending many Ethiopians students to India by bearing their living cost and tuition fees. Thousands of Ethiopian students have been educated and trained in India in the

last 15-18 years. Many professors from Indian universities are going to Ethiopia and teaching in our universities, thus strengthening people-topeople and educational relation between the two countries. We are a country under the process of reform. Many of our reforms initiatives are getting momentum. We are learning a lot from Indian institutions and from success stories of Indian development. Capacity building is one of the areas in which India has mastered and we are trying to learn lessons from India in this area. The relation between the two are getting stronger. As the Ethiopian economy grows and size of Ethiopian middle-class expands and people's income increases, they are travelling to India not only for business, but also for medical and tourism purpose.

Q

How many Indians are currently travelling to Ethiopia? Number of Indians visiting Ethiopia as tourists is not very high. It would hardly be a few hundreds or thousands but many Indians are

DIPLOMAT CORNER going to Ethiopia on business trips. Many Indians have invested in Ethiopia. According to a recent figure of Ethiopian Investment Commission, in 2017 India was the second largest investor in Ethiopia next to China. So many business travelers and expatriates are travelling to Ethiopia that is regarded as favorable investment destination, but we need to increase number of Indian tourists visiting Ethiopia.

Q

What is your government doing to increase the number of Indian tourists to Ethiopia? We are working with Indian sides to promote Indian tourism to our country. We are promoting our historical heritage sites in India. We are creating awareness about Ethiopia in India. Ethiopia is probably the only country in whole Africa which has stable government and is safe and peaceful. This situation is fantastic for Indians who want to visit

Ethiopia for business or tourism purpose. This is reason that many Indians have already invested in Ethiopia. As I mentioned earlier, another big advantage that Ethiopia offers is the direct flight between the two countries. Indians are also using Ethiopia as a transit to travel to Europe, Africa and the Middle East. We are highlighting this fact in India. Because of this fact, we are inviting Indians to visit to Ethiopia.

Q

How is the Ethiopian visa process for Indians? Our visa process for Indians is one of the simplest in the world. We also provides visa-on-arrival and online visa. Ethiopian immigration system can provide online visa or visa-on-arrival to those Indians who are far from our embassy or consulate office in India. Our embassy in New Delhi and Consulate office in Mumbai are issuing visa in a single day. Indians don't need to wait 24 hours to get visa.

Please tell us about Ethiopian

food. Our food culture is very rich and diverse. Ethiopian foods have many similarities with Indian foods. Just like Indians, Ethiopians also use lots of spices in foods. I know that Indians love spicy foods, and the amount of spices in Indian foods are higher than Ethiopian foods. As many Indians are vegetarians, Ethiopia also offers lots of vegetarian food options. For non-vegetarians we also have all types of options. Because of similarities between Indian and Ethiopian foods, Indians would definitely love Ethiopian foods. Some of our capital cities also have Indian restaurants for many years. As increasing number of Indian people including business travelers are travelling Ethiopia, Indian foods are gradually becoming popular in Ethiopia. So food is not a problem.
