ture. "I wish to emphasize that Greece is a year-round destination for Indians. We have lovely winter that is warmer and pleasant unlike what the rest of Europe has. You can spend your time in Athens, the capital of the country and beyond to explore antiquities, plethora of archaeological and anthropological sites and museums, besides enjoying sumptuous food and lively nightlife. Summer is an equally great time to visit Greece. In Summer, you can have options to enjoy the sunshine, the sea, its islands, local cuisine, nightlife, etc, besides many other amazing things. Because not all Indians have same have same taste, (like some are very fond of sunshine, while others are not), they can travel to Greece in different seasons . Athens is also famous for its shopping options at highly affordable prices ," said Zepos. Since the launch of Greece Visa Centre, Delhi in January this year, the number of Indian visitors to Greece has dramatically
increased. "I understand from our embassy and consulate in Delhi and from our GVACs here that the number of Indians travelling to Greece is growing steadily. Since we opened our office in January this year, the number of Indians travelling to Greece has increased by 60-65% which is a phenomenal boost," said Zepos. He added that "Today Indians are more interested in Greece than before. We are leveraging different media platforms to create awareness about modern Greece in India. Indians know very well about ancient Greece since their childhood, but now i think it is high time they should also know the contemporary Greece. Travel to Greece will offer them a great opportunity to experience both ancient and modern Greece." Zepos admitted that the number of Indians travelling to Greece is still very low, and in order to increase this number, Indians need to make Greece one of their preferred destinations. "As
you know Greece and India have always been friendly from eons. We need to enhance this friendship by knowing each-other well in modern times, and the best way to do this is travelling. So we request Indians to travel to Greece in large numbers to discover a world full of pleasant surprises," said Zepos. Greece is now also focusing on tourism segments other than leisure, such as meeting, conferences, wedding, etc. "We would definitely like to promote other aspects of tourism besides culture and leisure. As we have not been very focused on the business dimension of relations in past, nonleisure facets of tourism from India has not been very good. But now as business to business contacts between the countries improve, business travel will also improve. Therefore, we are pushing for every aspect of tourism," said the ex-ambassador. Considering the growing interest of Indians in Greece and the convenience of the visa applicants, GVCW has started opening its visa application centers across India on Saturdays as well. "We found that there are enough people who would prefer to come to our centers on Saturdays to submit their visa applications as they are too busy on weekdays to come to the VAC to apply for a visa," said Zepos, "Therefore, we decided that we should keep our centres open on Saturdays as well for those who could not submit documents from Monday to Friday. We are now open on Saturdays and getting a great response."

ocean cliffs for hours of treatments” are being used. For instance, at the Six Senses Bhutan, guests will journey across five lodges and have various experiences at each destination—from design to food to spa/wellness. Preventive health holidays: As people become increasingly aware of how unhealthy habits and lifestyle can significantly increase the risks of illness, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer, there has been an increase in preventative health holidays to keep one’s well-being in check. Medi-spas, involving check-ups, spa therapies and counseling, will likely increase in popularity. Crystal and energy healing, reiki

Hotels, airports and other travel spaces are increasingly designed and constructed with materials addressing the physical and mental health of those inside. Mindful movement: With mindfulness as the major buzzword in the wellness world over the last few years, this year is the year of ‘mindful movement’. Happy retreats: Wellness vacations begin with a postural assessment and then prescribe suitable therapies like aromatherapy, recovery, de-stress, reflexology, Vedic spice or invigorating massage and yogic kriyas. Personal trainers help with personal yoga sessions. Activities like morning hikes, beach yoga and meditation will work their way onto more and more itineraries. Further, there is TRX, stretching sessions, spinning, dance, laughter therapy, pranayama, meditation and more to do some mind, body and soulsearching. Break-up breaks: More and more people are planning wellness holidays following the breakdown of a relationship. INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH
Syros, near Mykonos
v B ARCHANA SHARMA Y
Kindly tell us how tourism in Greece is growing? What are the new initiatives to promote tourism? The number of tourist arrivals in Greece is rising continuously. Last year, we received around 27 million visitors. Tourism is becoming a very dynamic industry in Greece. We want to expand tourism not only in traditional segments like classic tourism, sightseeing, beaches but also in other kinds of tourism such as Medical Tourism, Religious Tourism, Cruise/ Sea Cruise Tourism and Sports Tourism. Just to give an example: Greece has so many steep rocks and slopes which is a kind of challenge for young climbers!
Q
Meteora
Stoa of Attalos Athens
As far as the new initiatives are concerned, Greece is a free market economy and the government encourages all private initiatives for improving infrastructure. Greece is a year round destination. It has sights not only related to antiquity but also of medieval and contemporary times. Therefore, we want to add elements to compose a multifaceted picture of Greece that makes a visitor fall in love with our country. What is the current number of foreign tourists visiting Greece? How many are Indians? As I mentioned earlier, Greece was chosen as a destination by around 27 million tourists in 2017. According to records, the total number of tourist visas issued last year by the Embassy of Greece in Delhi was 28,000. But as you know, many Indian citizens travel abroad on a ‘Schengen Visa’ from another Country members of the Schengen Visa and can visit Greece multiple times through this visa. For Indians, the trend is very much rising these days. If 28,000 visas were issued last year then the first four and a half months of 2018 shows that we have issued 16,400 visas, registering around 50% increase. We hope that the number will further increase soon.

INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH
What are the key source markets for tourism in Greece? How important is Indian market for tourism sector in Greece? Mostly, the traditional big source markets for Greek tourism are Britain, Germany, France and Russia with each of them accounting to around 1.5 million visitors. The next is the Arabian market which is a rapidly growing in terms of numbers. Some of the other key source markets are Turkey, Israel, Italy, Netherlands and the United States. In case of Indian market, as I mentioned earlier, the number of visitors is growing and I hope that with this trend, more Indians will come to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of Greece.
Q
What are the main reasons for Greece being a popular tourist destination across the world including India? Greece has a unique geology with various factors including scenic landscapes, unique beaches and beautiful Islands. Then, the country has an absolutely wonderful climate which is moderate and temperate and remains pleasant throughout the year. The lights of Greece have a particular quality that cannot be found elsewhere. Additionally, what makes it a popular destination is its rich cultural heritage. In fact,
Greece has given many things to the world civilization, such as theatre, poetry, democracy and philosophy. Therefore, people want to come and see what they had read in their education and to explore mythical and legendary places like Olympia and Athens. Another equally important thing to experience here is the warmth and hospitality of the people. When you are in Greece, you feel that you are amongst friends. As a matter of fact, there is a word in Greek language ‘Xenos’ which means foreign/stranger and guest. It simply means that once you come to Greece you become our guest. The Greek word of hospitality is ‘Philoxenia’ which literally translated means 'friendliness to the stranger' and this is a special quality of hospitality that you will find only in Greece! What is the visa process for Indians? The standard visa application process applies to all kinds of visitors. One can apply for visa through our new visa partner, GVCW. Through them, all required and genuine documents supporting their visa applications come to us and go through the process of scrutiny. 48 hours (during low season) and 3-4 days (during high season) is the standard time we take for visa processing. However, I need to add here that Greece is also a party to the Schengen Agreement. It could take just a bit longer time to process visa applications in the peak season.

INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH
How is the air connectivity between India and Greece? As of now there is no direct link between the two countries but we hope that it will be established soon, even if it’s a seasonal arrangement. While discussing this idea with the relevant companies, I got the impression that Indian tourists don’t mind taking a longer route with stopover at another country. It is only the business travelers who want to travel directly. I hope that the rise in flow of tourists will make airline companies to consider this positively and establish a direct air link for the benefit of travellers.
Q
Athens
Tell us about the cultural relations between the two countries? How important are these relations for tourism? It might take another interview to speak about the immense cultural relations between India and Greece (he smiles). Well, I don’t know about any other European nation that has more and deeper ancient cultural relations with India. I also think that Greeks have a genuine and keen interest in the cultural connection between our Countries. We have deep appreciation for the fact that India also has an ancient civilization.
Q
Knossos, Crete
Historically, the first link established between the two countries was Alexander’s expedition to India. But, strategically it continued throughout the centuries. There is also a deep appreciation in Greece for the Indian culture, its richness and originality. Recently, there was a scientific congress held here about the father of Greek Indology, ‘Demetrios Galanos’, who was the earliest recorded Greek Indologist. His translations of Sanskrit texts into Greek made knowledge of the philosophical and religious ideas of India available to many Westerners. He spent 47 years in India, where he translated many Hindu sacred texts into Greek and compiled a Sanskrit-English-Greek dictionary of over 9000 words. There are two Orthodox churches in Kolkata which are visited by Greeks living there and other Christians of Orthodox lineage. Also, as independent countries post 1947, India and Greece share a set of values and want to uphold UN principles based on the current world order. We both respect the international law with no use of force or threats. Both the countries are thriving democracies that respect the freedom of speech and expression, and freedom for their citizens to pursue their happiness.
