Lack of proper infrastructure has been a perennial problem in our country. This has adversely affected every segment of our economy including tourism. Bottlenecks like poor quality of roads, deficient air connectivity and lack of civic amenities in and around tourist destinations eclipse the beauty of Incredible India. Although we have made some progress in this area in the recent years, the country still has to go a long way before bridging the gap between the necessary infrastructure and its current state. However, it is heartening to note that the Government is now recognizing the significance of having good infrastructure and is according high priority to its development.
While laying emphasis on infrastructure development in this year's budget, the government has completely overlooked the Travel & Hospitality Industry's demands of taxation reliefs and other exemptions. President, Travel Agents Association of India
SUNIL KUMAR R
'We need to play a bigger and more visible role as the Nodal Industry Association'
SUNIL KUMAR R, WHO WAS RECENTLY RE-ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF TRAVEL AGENTS ASSOCIATION OF INDIA (TAAI), BELIEVES THAT TAAI AS THE NODAL INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF INDIA'S TRAVEL & TOURISM INDUSTRY NEEDS TO PLAY A BIGGER, MORE PROACTIVE AND MORE VISIBLE ROLE FOR THE INDUSTRY.
v B ARCHANA SHARMA Y
What will be the plans and priorities of the new national team of TAAI? TAAI is India's oldest and leading travel & tourism industry body. The size of the volunteers from the industry expressing their desire to lead TAAI reflects the leadership position TAAI has created for itself over the years. We are in the 67th year of existence. I strongly believe that we need to play a bigger and more visible role as the Nodal Industry Association that has all the verticals imbedded into our membership. Be it aviation, tourism – domestic, inbound & outbound, MICE, online agencies, hospitality, technology, specialty events and more. An association with such a vast membership is unparalleled in India, and in order to leverage our strength in the larger interest of our industry, we have to be loud, clear and visible in all that we do. fore, it is our goal to offer such visibility which comes with a purpose to offer greater support to our membership. In your view, how have been the last couple of years for agents? What are the challenges agents are facing today in India? One big challenge for agencies is the independent marketing and selling that is done by the airlines. Competing with our principals is a challenge that agencies face today. Remuneration from airlines coming down is an incorrect aspect of relationship between an airline and an agency. This must be corrected. Technology playing a greater role in offering convenience and cost as an important take home for our customers, particularly the young adults, and is another challenge for the agencies. Of course, escalating costs of sustainability has gone up
Q
and we as agents fraternity are doubling up to ensure that we cross the line of success comfortably. Since its rollout in July last year, what differences has GST made for agents? GST appeared to be friendly, but as it got rolled out and travel agencies are being pushed towards compliance, our opinion is that it is very complex. The government, in our opinion, should lower GST percentage and avoid input tax credit being offered, for this industry in view of its vast size. Clarity with our principals as to how we can operate as a reseller model also requires greater education which is lacking. We approached the government on the issue, but that has not yielded any results. There is confusion all over. GST can be made more friendly and remunerative for the government if they can get down to practical situa-

tions rather than issuing directives that are difficult to comply with. The government’s approach to 'penalize' must scale down. Tax payers must be given due respect and occasional delays must not be perceived as a wrong intent that demands penalization. How will you describe the current relationship between travel agents & airlines? It appears that airlines are insecure to be led by travel agencies. Maybe this trend is not true with everyone. But they fail to understand that the cost of distribution through agencies can be far more economical for them than getting involved in their own marketing efforts. The day this country witnesses airlines and agencies as 'partners in the true-sense' and out of competition with each other, it will be a win-win situation for both airlines and agencies.
Q
What's your take on the Modi Government's policy for the tourism industry? When PM Narendra Modi was elected to power, we all saw a huge hope for tourism in India, since he referred this industry to be a priority sector. This is a great vision. Many nations of the world are encashing on tourism. India is a country of vast tourism potential, and most reasonably priced destination. We have history, culture, sports, leisure, medical care and wellness, you name it and India has it. The excellent vision of our PM Modi has to be realized by the departments
Q
TAAI'S PRESIDENT SPEAKS: ON CHALLENGES: through newer approaches involving private industry stakeholders. Unless we are taken into confidence by the government and assigned tasks, there will be no improvement. We can only say that our PM has great plans to make tourism an economic growth engine for India and towards this vision we must go all out. What would be the theme of the next convention of TAAI being held in Srinagar? The focus of the next convention of TAAI being held from 27th to 30th March, 2018, in Srinagar, is on Tourism. Being an association that represents very large tourism fraternity, we would like to go all out to promote tourism in India. We have received an invitation from the Ministry of Tourism, Jammu & Kashmir and we have decided to honour them since they have great potential and natural wonders that must be made visible to the world. We sincerely hope this event in Srinagar will herald a new approach and connect of TAAI with Tourism.

The FM said that the government's ‘Safety First’ policy is cornerstone of Railways’ focus on safety. "Maintenance of track infrastructure is being given special attention. Over 3600 kms of track renewal is targeted during the current fiscal, and 600 major railway stations is being redeveloped. All railway stations and trains will be progressively provided with Wi-Fi. We are happy to see the government sharpen its focus on the same. Renewal of railway tracks to broad gauge is the need of the hour. Digital connectivity at railway stations will allow for better access to passenger amenities and more opportunities for businesses." Operations have already started at 16 such airports. "The move to expand the UDAN scheme to over 56 unserved airports and 31 unserved helipads will open up huge opportunities for the travel industry as connectivity will improve and people in these areas will be able to travel seamlessly within India and overseas," said Kerkar. The budgetary allocation for the Civil Aviation Ministry has also been increased from `2,702 crore (2710.31) to `6,602 crore (a jump of Rs. 3,900 crore). The Union Budget 2018-19 has increased more than 20% the budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Tourism, which has been allotted `2,150 crore for the next fiscal as against the estimated `1840.77 Crore (revised `1776.40 Crore) of the current fiscal. The Mudra Loan allocation of Rs 3 lakh crore will help in enabling SMEs to generate more jobs while creating thousands of new entrepreneurs too." Disappointments India's Tourism Industry was keenly looking forward to the presentation of the Union Budget 2018-19, hoping for some incentives and respite from difficulties in doing business in tourism sector. Infrastructure status and a single-window clearance mechanism have been the long standing demands of the hospitality industry, which has also been demanding a simpler tax structures for the sector. But none of the demands of the industry has been met in the budget 2018-19, and, therefore, the industry is disappointed. "The hospitality industry is extremely disappointed with the Union Budget," says Dilip Datwani, President, Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI). With the implementation of GST from July 2017, the Parliament's authority with regard to levying indirect taxes has been transferred to the GST Council, therefore, the Financial Minister can no longer offer any
GST related relief to any industries in the budget. What the FM could have done is that he should have offered infrastructure status to the hospitality industry and industry status to the overall tourism industry. The Finance Minister could also have granted service export status to inbound tourism. These have been the long standing demands of this industry. A lot needs to be done if India has to realize its true tourism potential. A key challenge the industry has been facing is the high tax levies, making India an expensive tourism destination. Madhavan Menon, Chairman, Thomas Cook Group, said, " Upgrading India’s Infrastructure by modernizing the railways, airports and roads as well as introducing more airports to connect various parts of the country, are initiatives that will help boost tourism in India." However, he added, the one thing that the Budget did not touch upon was the hospitality sector. "We were hoping for a rationalization on taxes for hotels in the country. There is a clear shortage of organized hotels in the country and if we want to boost the tourism sector further, it is important to address these issues as well.”
ECONOMIC SURVEY 2017-18 The Economic Survey 2017-18 summed up various initiatives taken to promote tourism, including the introduction of the e-Visa facility under three categories-Tourist, Medical and Business for 163 countries, launch of Global Media Campaign for 2017-18, launch of ‘The Heritage Trail’ to promote the World Heritage Sites in India, celebration of ‘Paryatan Parv’ having 3 components namely Dekho Apna Desh, Tourism for All, and ‘Tourism & Governance’ with interactive sessions with stakeholders on varied themes. FTAs on eTourist Visa grew by 143% to 10.8 lakh in 2016, and further grew by 57.2% to 17.0 lakh during 2017.

TRENDS IN BUSINESS TRAVEL TO WATCH OUT FOR v B NEHA KIRPAL Y
Small is big today in travel — whether we’re talking about boutique hotels, private airline terminals or special-access tours. We did some research and found out what would be some of the biggest trends in business travel to watch out for in 2018. Read on! Staying connected: Since millennials have been identified as the most frequent business travellers, travelling trends in 2018 will be largely influenced by the travel habits of this demographic. Given our dependence on technology in these times, staying connected is the most obvious travelling trend. According to recent research, up to 75% of business travellers consider WiFi as an

FEATURE community, and developing a rich knowledge and understanding. Travellers are increasingly looking for intangibles, such as more personalized, meaningful, exclusive and culturally immersive experiences and opportunities for personal growth and enrichment. Private villas over luxe resorts: Today’s breed of private villa rentals have become the ultimate in luxury travel lodging for business travellers. Maximized privacy and security, uber-tailored guest service and five-star accommodations and amenities are chief reasons why the trend toward private villa lodging is exploding. Private villa residences offering first-class, one-of-a-kind services are ushering in an entirely new era of bespoke business hospitality around the globe. They are, in fact, single-handedly setting a new and decidedly elevated standard for luxe business and corporate travel worldwide. This includes custom-prepared gourmet meals from an on-site private chef in a stylishly-appointed residential setting, 24/7 bilingual butler service and multiple staff. Health/fitness & wellness: With people becoming more fitnessconscious, the emphasis on using gyms and world-class spas while on business trips has increased. Wellness has quickly become a major focus for luxury travellers, so hotels are ramping up their spa services- some offering treatments reflecting local traditions. Other specialized services include fit-

ness training, massage, wellness coaches and physiotherapists. Yoga, meditation and mindfulness sessions are seen as stress busters for rest and relaxation. Smart suitcases: The Bluesmart Suitcase can be called a business traveller’s best friend. Billed as “the world’s first smart suitcase,” this carry-on keeps travellers’ belongings tracked, devices charged, bag secure and trips hassle-free thanks to integrated technology that syncs to an associated mobile app that’s compatible with both iPhones and Androids. The suitcase features a built-in battery/charger with two USB ports. The bag also boasts a 3G+GPS tracker with global cov-
erage to track the suitcase anywhere in the world. Airlines upgrading their business and premium offerings: Airlines are going all out to upgrade their business and premium offerings, with everything from luxury toiletries to dedicated travel attendants. Singapore Airlines has launched a wide range of in-flight offerings on its latest A380 aircraft. Emirates recently launched its first-class cabin on its first two Boeing 777-300ER aircrafts. Delta Airlines too launched its first all-suites business class cabin on its inaugural Airbus A350 flight.

2017 was a challenging year for the Indian tourism industry that first had to grapple with the effects of demonetization, and then came GST. Bite Corner Exquisite Italian Food Indulgence v B PRADEEP CHAMARIA Y
It has been a hard day in your office and having finished work you are ready to wind down. But you feel a tad hungry and look for something to re-energise you. So what are the options? In my case, I usually buy a soft drink and along with some snacks to satiate my hunger. At times, along with a colleague I head for a small eatery on the way back and chill with a drink and some nibbles. Now that’s what they call Aperitivo in Italy where food is a celebration. This early evening drink and snack, i.e the Aperitivo is the best way to kick-start metabolism and work up an appetite for dinner; the idea being that the drink stimulates the appetite. Italians can romanticize anything, and I mean even drinks n food. They believe that an aperitivo is the perfect prelude to a rich meal in the late evening hours. They believe that your gastric juices flowing by indulging in a pre-dinner drink with snacks and define an aperitivo as a pre-dinner sipping and snacking ritual intended to stimulate appetite and encourage digestion. Aperitivo also is a precious moGreen Chilli Chicken

ment to slow down and enjoy face time sans smartphones. The word “Aperitivo” has origins in Latin; meaning “to open”, as something that literally “opens your stomach” and was born in the late 18th century when Antonio Benedetto Carpano created the first aperitivo drink; Vermut (better known as Vermouth), an herb flavored white wine that is served as a pre-meal drink. It initially was just beverages one had with his/her friends or colleagues as they headed home from work. But they think it’s not good just to have drinks on empty stomach, so an Aperitivo today is always accompanied by some delis. Earlier it used to just drinking an

snack with crostini, cold cuts, cheese, bruschetta, and other food spread like different types of fresh pasta, grilled or sautéed vegetables, and sandwiches. An Aperitivo is a must do when in Italy. Its like going out for Tapas as they do in Spain, or enjoying Happy Hour as they do it in the U.S.A. But what do you do when you are not in Italy? Don’t worry guys, I am gonna recommend a great place where you can go and indulge in Aperitivo and also in other delicious Italian food and desserts. I am talking about Artusi Ristorante, Gurgaon. They have an outlet at Greater Kailash Part II in New Delhi too.
One can start with crisp Breads served along with a Platter of mixed Italian cheese, Formaggi Assortiti and then start the culinary journey with exotic aperitivos and drinks. We visited the Ristorante and being vegetarians, tasted Rucola e Fior di Latte (crusty bread base i.e. Crostini served with Rucola and soft cheese toppings), Funghi e Formaggi (Mushroom and cheese crostini) and Gran Crostone (Gran crostone with grilled vegetables). I loved the Funghi e Formaggi Aperitivo the most; it was a delicacy made with finest soft cheese gently melted over crispy bread with sauteed mushrooms. The Gran Crostone is an aperitivo
served on soft breads and it also tasted divine. Chicken/meat eaters don’t lose heart, they also have some amazing aperitivos in non-veg siction too like the Pate di Fegatini (chicken), Tannato e Caperi (tuna n Chicken), Gamberetti Salsa Rosa (Shrimp), Salmone e Avocado (Salmon and Avocado). We then continued our Italian journey and finished up with some delicious pastas and Risottos, and authentic desserts, namely Tiramisu and Cioccolato Nero e Scorza di Arancia, a dark airy chocolate mousse and caramalised orange peel. Our sinful journey into the amazing world of a true Italian Gastronomy came to an end as we finished the last bite of our desserts. But this experience left us wanting more. Soon we have to head back to Artusi for a repeat.

DIPLOMAT’S CORNER
'THAILAND ' CAN BE THE BRIDGE BETWEEN INDIA AND ASEAN COUNTRIES' Thailand and India have perennially had excellent relations. These relations are not just between the governments, but also between the people of both countries. Thailand is a hugely popular destination among Indian travellers, both for leisure as well as business. Due to its strategic location in South-East Asia, Thailand can serve as a bridge between India and ASEAN countries, said H.E. Mr. THARADOL THONGRUANG, Minister Counsellor (Commercial), Royal Thai Embassy, New Delhi. In an Exclusive interview with TnH, he talked about Thailand as a MICE destination and the immense potential of the Indian market. v B PREM KUMAR Y
Q
What is the strategy of Thailand to promote MICE tourism?
MICE tourism is very important for our country. We are trying to increase the overall contribution of Meetings, Incentive, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) into our economy. The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), which works directly under the office of our Prime Minister, plays a key role in promoting it. Now we are according high priority to the promotion of MICE, besides focusing on the promotion of trade, investment, etc. Since 2004, TCEB has been working to establish Thailand as a leading MICE destinations in Asia. The Royal Government of Thailand is providing all kind of supports to TCEB and the MICE industry to promote this segment, especially in the Indian market, because India is a neighbouring country with a large market.
Q
What makes Thailand an attractive MICE destination for Indians?
Thailand has had very good historical and cultural relations with India. Such relations along with its geographical proximity with India, coupled with our immense tourism potential and hospitable people make our country an attractive destination for Indians. India is also a very important market for MICE, being the
fastest growing economy in the world. Our people are working closely with their counterparts in India to promote this segment. There are immense cultural similarities between the two countries. Thanks to the constant efforts of our government and TCEB, Thailand has emerged as a popular MICE destination, and we further want to promote this segment, with India our prime focus. I know Indians love Thailand and they would love to organize their meetings and conferences in Thailand. I know that when they travel to Thailand, they feel at home. Big companies and start-ups are visiting Thailand to organize business events. There are lots of Indian companies which are investing in Thailand. We have a wide range of destinations for MICE

DIPLOMAT’S CORNER activities. Each destination has its own beauty and uniqueness. Almost every part of Thailand is well-connected by flights, roads and trains. Our roads are very wide and beautiful. Luxury buses are available for guests and delegates. The southern region of Thailand has beaches and islands whereas the Northern part has beautiful mountains. Just like India, people of the north are quite different from the south. We have lots of diversity, and we are also a very affordable destination.
Q
ASEAN nations are also becoming stronger. Recently heads of states and governments of 10 ASEAN nations were the state guests on India's Republic Day celebration. They discussed measures to strengthen ties between India and ASEAN.
What are the important places in Thailand other than Bangkok to organize events?
Every region of Thailand is a beautiful place to organize MICE and social events like weddings, conferences, etc. Besides Bangkok, destinations like Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Khon Kaen and Phuket are other important places to hold events. There are many other places in the South and North-eastern parts of Thailand as well, which have state-of-the-art venues to hold events, conventions, exhibitions, etc. Four new facilities are coming up in different parts of the country that will further boost the MICE capability of Thailand.
Q
How do you see Thailand serving as a bridge between ASEAN countries and India?
Thailand is well-connected to India through different modes of transportation. You can connect to Thailand from India by a huge number of flights. Goods can easily be transported between the two countries via convenient sea routes. We also have Asian Highways Network (AH) (also known as the Great Asian Highway) connecting countries in Asia right from Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan India, its North-Eastern Region to Myanmar, Thailand, Korea, Japan and other countries of South East Asia. A large part of the network is already in use.
Q
Tell us about trade relations between India and Thailand.
We have excellent trade relations. We are continuously inviting Indian investors to avail business opportunities present in Thailand. Trade between the two countries has been growing continuously, which we need to increase further. India and Thailand have signed a free trade agreement (FTA). Relations between India and

Q
How is the Indian market growing for Thailand tourism?
In 2017 Thailand received around 14 lakh tourists from India, recording a growth of about 16%. This year our target is to welcome 16 lakh Indians to Thailand. By 2020, our target is to welcome 20 lakh annual visitors from India.
Q
What would be your advice to Indians travelling to Thailand?
Bangkok is a beautiful city to visit with many attractions to be enjoyed there. The capital also offers wonderful opportunities to enjoy Thai food and shopping. But I would request Indian travelers not to remain stuck in Bangkok for long; visit Thailand beyond its capital. Thailand has much more to offer other than just its capital. Visit the North-Eastern and Sothern regions of Thailand which are very beautiful. You can enjoy beautiful nature, mountains, beaches, etc, in these parts of Thailand. Thank you!

Chiang Mai Songkran Festival The Songkran festival is the Thai New Year's festival. The Thai New Year's Day is 13 April every year, but the holiday period includes 14–15 April as well. The word "Songkran" comes from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti literally "astrological passage", meaning transformation or change. The term was borrowed from Makar Sankranti, the name of a Hindu harvest festival celebrated in India in January to mark the arrival of spring. It coincides with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart, the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia. The festive occasion is in keeping with the Buddhist/Hindu solar calendar. Rooted in Buddhist tradition, the purification ritual of sprinkling statues of the Buddha with water has evolved into a three-day countrywide water fight known as Songkran. April 30, 2018 Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Beltane Fire Festival Beltane Fire Festival is an annual participatory arts event and ritual drama, held on 30 April on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. Light a fire to celebrate the coming of summer among folks who take ancient Celtic festivals seriously—even if it means dancing naked. The modern Beltane Fire Festival is inspired by the ancient Gaelic festival of Beltane which began on the evening before 1 May and marked the beginning of summer. The modern festival was started in 1988 by a small group of enthusiasts including the musical collective Test Dept, with academic support from the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Since then the festival has grown, and now involves over 300 voluntary collaborators and performers with available tickets often selling out.
