Change is the law of life. And those who hold onto the past or present are certain to miss the future. If you think about the changes the world has witnessed simply in the last 50 years, you’ll know how much we have adapted and evolved to keep up with changing times. Only in 1967 was the first ATM model built and installed in London, and it was in 1973 that Motorola unveiled the first cellphone. Moreover, it was as late as the 90s that the Internet we know today started taking shape and the world-wideweb was created. Change can be slow, but once it comes, it can alter the course of history. The same has been true for the Indian Travel Industry. In 1976, travel agents were given access to a GDS for the first time and it was in 1994 when Bird Group introduced Amadeus to the Indian market. Deep Karla founded MakeMyTrip, the first Indian OTA, in 2000 and revolutionized the way we booked our travel. Whether we liked it or not, review websites like tripadvisor and social media platfroms like Twitter and Facebook gave all our clients the avenue to become powerful critics of our goods and services. And now across the world and in India too, artificial intelligence (AI) is the latest buzzword thrown around to address the phenomenon that will magically unlock previously unthinkable technological progress. While often such conversations involve long-horizon views, most of us don’t realise AI is already here to stay.
To brief you, Webster dictionary defines artificial intelligence as the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior. The intelligence Facebook uses to make friend suggestions; how Amazon intuitively knows what we would like to buy; how Google Photos recognises faces and places, and American automaker Tesla’s electric cars are just a few examples of AI in use. The most suitable example however is our iPhone’s personal assistant, Siri. She’s the friendly voice-activated computer that we all love to interact with routinely. She adds events to our calendars, sends us reminders, helps us find information, gives us directions, helps us makes calls and send messages and the list goes on. Siri uses machine-learning or artificial intelligence technology to predict and understand our natural-language questions and requests. On a similar note, to transform the customer’s experience travel companies too are rapidly integrating AI into their organizational practices. Subsequently, the centrepiece of this issue is a feature on the applications of the intriguing AI technology in travel (page 20). In spite of the rise of cutting edge technology like AI, nature will continue to have the last word. Climate change and global warming are already beginning to transform life on Earth and without action, the impacts of climate change threaten to catastrophically damage our future in this world. In a tiny attempt to rally our readers to be a part of the solution we have compiled a list of tips to promote ecotourism on page 23. Enjoy these stories and much more and remember as much as it looks like machines are set to replace us and sea levels are rising to drown us, our connection and responsibilities as human beings is what is going to move us forward as a species.

"This will help us be more specific with the redress of complaints and suggestions. We will be able to gauge the rate of customer satisfaction as well as grade the suggestions," he added. Presently, IRCTC takes feedback either
on an on-board suggestion book, or through its twitter handle. Passengers can also call 139 to complain about the quality of food. These methods will continue to be available along with the new system, Morawala said. Around 100 tablets have so far been given by the Railways to on-board supervisors of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) in different railway zones for recording customer feedback on food quality, staff behaviour and other related issues, the official said. by TNH DESK

Indian Railways to rename trains after famous literary works
T
he Railway Ministry according to an official was creating a bank of award winning literary works from across the country to christen trains across railway zones. Adding an erudite touch to train journeys, the railways ministry is looking at a proposal to rename trains after famous literary works, referencing not just their authors but the region they come from. So, passengers travelling to West Bengal could soon board a train named after a novel by Mahashweta Devi and a train ride to Bihar could reference a work by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, said a senior official. The ministry, he said, was creating a bank of award winning literary works from across the country to christen trains across railway zones. "The idea came from the minister (Suresh Prabhu) who said the railways is a secular integrating factor in the country and the names of the trains can be used to showcase varied cultural identities. So we will name trains on the works of the authors across languages and across regions," said the official. by TNH DESK

"mAadhaar when shown by the passenger on his/her mobile after entering the password should be accepted as proof of identity for undertaking journey in any reserved class over Indian Railways," according to a notification from the Ministry of Railways. The use of mAadhaar as an identity proof will be valid across any reserved class, it added. In order to use the mAadhaar or 'mobile Aadhaar' app, users need to register their mobile number with UIDAI. Once the process is complete, they can download their details on the app. For showing Aadhar, the

Once a user enables the lock system, the app remains locked till he/she chooses to either unlock it (which is temporary) or disable the locking system. EXPLORE DELHI’S KEY SPOTS IN 12 HOURS Being the national capital of India, Delhi holds huge significance for tourists. You can explore variety of tourist spots, ancient as well as modern in the city. In this article, we have listed how you can explore Delhi in 12 hours!
Red Fort in Delhi
v B ARCHANA SHARMA Y
At 10 a.m.
Start your day by skipping hotel breakfast and head to the remarkable Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, early in the morning. Then, walk up to the Chandni Chowk and take your time to explore small shops alongside the road. Enter the spice, jewellery or wedding markets in the nearby pathways; see the beautiful, yet run-down havelis; or visit some of the religious places of worship belonging to Hindus, Sikhs and Christians. The street-food vendors alongside the way offer a large variety of authentic, delicious and diverse Indian breakfast options, including tasty stuffed parathas at Jai Hind Paratha Bhawan, and samosas at Old and Famous Jalebiwala. After a quick breakfast, head to Jama Masjid but remember to dress conservatively, covering your knees, shoulders and head.
At 12:30 p.m. From the Jama Masjid, head for the Red Fort. This massive red sandstone residence for Mughal emperors is an iconic symbol of India and a must see heritage property in Delhi. Despite vast destruction by the British forces in the aftermath of the Indian rebellion in 1857, the size of Red Fort, its magnificent inner courts and pavilions are still impressive.

Now it is the turn of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to set the terms of the game. AI, although still in its infancy, promises to transform many sectors including travel. We are seeing the fast increasing use of AI by Facebook, Google and e-commerce websites like Amazon, Flipkart, etc. Facebook uses AI to make friend suggestions. Google runs the world's largest ad platform and uses AI to process users' search data for targeted advertising. Google’s Voice assistant, Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa are AI-powered applications that offer precise and personalized results to users. Why should travel companies stay behind? Travel brands are increasingly using AI to offer better experiences to their customers and customers are happily welcoming new AI based interactive experiences. Chatbots, an AI-based technology, are growingly being used by airlines for some transactions. For example, Chatbots are assisting airlines and online travel agencies in making bookings and issuing boarding passes. A chatbot is a computer program

IATO's Annual Convention is expected to stimulate tourism growth in the state. Speaking at the inaugural session, Pronab Sarkar, President, IATO said that taxation has been a big challenge for the industry for many years, and recently launched GST has further aggravated our pain. Addressing the delegates, Tourism Minister K J Alphons urged the industry to think out of box and come out with radical ideas for developing tourism in the country. TIPS FOR TRAVELLERS TO SUPPORT ECO-TOURISM
Binsar
Ecotourism is a very important aspect of tourism to understand. With global warming and rising pollution levels, it’s high time for us to care for our mountains, beaches, hills and the air we breathe. Ecotourism focuses on socially responsible travel, personal growth and environmental sustainability. It typically involves travelling to destinations where nature and cultural heritage are the primary attractions. Luckily, Ecotourism is on the rise and many of the travellers like to contribute to it through some way or the other. So, if you are planning to go for a vacation, be a responsible traveller this time. Here are a few tips on how you can save the environment while travelling...
v B ARCHANA SHARMA
No vehicle roads / destinations: Explore a new city or destination where you won’t need a vehicle to navigate. You can explore the destinations on foot like the Mall Road in Shimla, Matheran (near Mumbai) or nature walks in Binsar. It should be noted that walking is the best option to infuse the local flavour. Say no to plastic bags: Plastic takes 1000's of years to decompose and is a deadly pollutant. If you are travelling to any hill station in India, make sure that you carry your own bag while shopping. You will not get any plastic bag even for the food items in the local market. Opt for eco-friendly dwellings: Instead of choosing
Y
chic hotels and air-conditioned rooms, choose a homestay when you travel to a destination. Once you do enough research you will find that many of these homestays are built with eco-friendly materials and exercise prominent initiatives such as water recycling, eating on leaves and much more. Just eat local and buy local: Living in a plantation is your chance to experience the earth beneath your feet in a different way. Indulge in offbeat experiences. For example you can join farmers in harvesting local produce Homestay
during your holidays. Buy local, organic food and economically empower the local community. Leave it the way you found it: This simply means that no matter where you go, try to conserve, re-use and recycle items. Dispose your waste responsibly and don't litter the places you visit. Plant a tree wherever you go: When you take back memories and incredible experiences from a place, leave behind a little something for the land in return. Plant a tree wherever you like, sow a seed on the street to say a small ‘thank you’ to the place for being a wonderful host.
Eating on Banana leaf

ith winter just round the corner, you’re probably already scouting about to plan your holidays for the remaining part of the year. We did some research and dished out a list of the top ten winter destinations in India. Read on! Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh: Known for its palaces and temples, Gwalior makes one feel royal just by being in it. The majestic fort overlooks the entire city, making for an unforgettable stopover. Don’t miss the spectacular 45-minute sound and light show here. There’s also the imperial-styled Man Singh Palace, which adds further to the city’s mystique and grandeur. Further, the city’s notable chattris are magnificent walk-in marble structures as big as large houses. Also, if you have the time, try and visit the famed Scindia School, the erstwhile abode of princes. Alleppey, Kerala: Winter is the perfect time to visit this idyllic haven. Known best for its houseboat cruises along the backwaters, you can spend the winter unwinding and relaxing in peace and tranquility. With sightseeing that consists of a mix of temples, churches, beaches and museums, there’s never a dull
moment in Alleppey. The snake boat race is a significant annual event not to be missed. You can also sit back and relax while relishing a soothing ayurvedic massage, or watching an animated Kathakali performance while in the city. Amritsar, Punjab: The city that caters to pilgrims, foodies and history buffs alike, Amritsar has something for everyone. With pleasant weather in the coming months, it is a treat for the senses. With great rail and air connectivity, Amritsar is the perfect weekend getaway. The famous Golden temple is auspicious and always a pleasure to visit. You could stop by the Jallianwala Bagh not too far away for a peek into India’s history. The Partition museum, with its rare collection of photographs, documents and artifacts chronicling the partition of India and Pakistan, is another relatively new attraction that should not be missed. Darwaza, a Mughal gateway; the Bara Imambara shrine; the Bhool Bhulaiya and the Victorian Clock Tower. If you’re a shopaholic who loves clothes, then Lucknow is the place to pick up some salwar-kurtas having some of the intricate chikan embroidery. You could also head out to the main market for some of the finest traditional mouthwatering cuisine—the century-old Tunday Kebabi is your best bet. Lucknow Mahotsav, a 10-day festival that starts in late November, is a good time to visit. Nashik, Maharashtra: This ancient holy city is celebrated equally for its religious spots as well as vineyards. Make a stop at the Dudhsagar falls, regarded as one of the finest for its panoramic views. The wellknown Sula Vineyards is another talking point in the city. Spread over an area of 160 acres, the vineyard also houses its own resort and tasting room for visitors. Apart from this, there are a number of temples and caves in the city—enough to keep travellers busy over a long, captivating weekend. Pondicherry: ‘Pondy’, as it is popularly called, is a delightful choice for all those looking to experience the best of France in India. The city also appeals to the spiritually inclined, as its renowned Mother’s ashram draws several visitors every year. The French quarter of the city has some of the most authentic bakeries, patisseries and other delicacies that will leave you wanting more. Moreover, Pondicherry is a convenient bus ride from Chennai, and the three-hour journey is as picturesque as the destination. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan: This stunning desert city is a popular choice for all those looking to do something vibrant in the winter vacations. Though a predominantly yellow city (due to the presence of sand everywhere), there is an abundance of colour—in the attire of the rural men and women, the ornaments of the camels and the rich experiences that the city offers. A camel safari on the Sam sand dunes is an absolute

must-do, as is a visit to the city’s exquisite live-in fort—the only one of its kind in India. Kaziranga National Park, Assam: If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, then winter is the time when most national parks in India are open. If you have enough vacation time, then pick someplace far and interesting—Kaziranga will surely not disappoint. A world heritage site, Kaziranga is home to a fascinating collection of tigers, elephants and the world’s largest population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceroses. Apart from these, the park also has dolphins, wild water buffalos, swamp deer, migratory birds and grey pelicans. Hampi, Karnataka: This ancient village in Karnataka— another world heritage site—is filled with several ruins of temple complexes from the Vijayanagara Empire. The 16th century Vittala temple is a highlight, and is at a distance of about 2 kilometres from Hampi Bazaar. Here, you could visit the Virupaksha temple, one of the city’s oldest structures, and Hampi’s only remaining working temple. Another charming place to go to are the elephant stables, a grand building with 11 domed chambers where state elephants once resided. A good time to visit would be January, when the annual Vijaya Utsav takes place—a three-day extravaganza of culture, heritage and the arts. Konark, Odisha: Think exotic, and you think of Konark. Located in the Puri district of Odisha, it has some of the nicest temples, beaches and museums. The eminent Sun temple, built in the 13th century, is an architectural marvel that exemplifies the Oriyan form of architecture. Also a world heritage site, the temple is shaped in the form of a massive chariot engraved with stone wheels, pillars and walls. Outside the temple, there is an ASI museum consisting of 250 kinds of unique artifacts and antiques. Further, the pristine Chandrabhaga beach is considered one of the best on the east coast, and perfect for viewing the sunrise and the sunset while here.

India offers much more than just its culture and heritage. A whole new holistic approach is required to promote India as a year-round destination. India as a country is full of diversity. Different parts and states of the country have their respective different languages, customs, ways of life, history, culture and heritage. It is the culture and heritage of the country that attracts large number of tourists from abroad. And, our Golden Triangle circuit comprising Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is the fulcrum of our cultural and heritage tourism. Other facets of tourism which Incredible India can offer are adventure tourism, ecotourism, wildlife, Yoga, Ayurveda, etc. that are attracting very few tourists from abroad. We have massive Himalayan landscapes offering vast opportunities for adventure tourism, but there is a lack of awareness about this fact in our international tourism market. Foreign tourists identify India more with its famous monuments such as Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Royal palaces and other historical monuments than its natural attractions such as wildlife, mountains, rivers etc. The country’s 7516.6 km of coastline touching 13 States and Union Territories are almost untapped as tourist attractions. Culture and Heritage tourism counts for around 40% of international by TNH DESK tourism.

We’re talking about JW Kitchen@JW Marriott Kolkata that is opened all round-the-clock. The restaurant is on the ground floor of the five-star haunt at JBS Haldane Avenue, and came up on November 3, last year. The interiors of the restaurant boast of long columns of bells made of fibre and coated with zinc. For connoisseurs of good food heading to the restaurant, there is Continental, Asian and Indian cuisines. The restaurant serves a bewildering variety of delicately-spiced dishes and fragrantly spiced curries. One should try Father Michel’s Burata – an Italian signature dish in the appetizer and salad section that comes for

Rs 425 exclusive of taxes. For non-vegetarians, the main course begins with black pepper crusted Salmon pegged at Rs 850. For more substantial meal, dig into Murg Bhatti or Chingri (prawn) curry, an eternal favourite of Bengal. One can also go for an a la carte menu at the restaurant. According to Alok Anand, Executive Chef, JW Marriott Kolkata, “In the current age, an increasing number of food lovers are getting into health food, thus making salads popular. We have four live stations including our chaat, waffle, Italian and an Asian counter that make us stand out from other fine dining restaurants in Kolkata. There is Do-It-Yourself (DIY) option in the salad counter and at least 12 kinds of salads are on display.” The Asian counter has on offer Chinese and Burmese dishes. There are six kinds of chaat on offer. I began with the lip-smacking Aloo ka tikka chaat and moved on to Kasundi Paneer Tikka- paneer cubes tossed in spices and pepped up with spicy mustard sauce known as Kasundi in Bengal. I also tried the gravy items like Kadhai Parwal – parwal stuffed with spices and the spicy Dum Aloo that are eternal favourite among vegans. For die-hard non-vegetarians, there is Chingri Curry, another signature creation of Bengal that has prawns fried in spices and dipped in coconut milk. To round off the meal, I proceeded towards the dessert section and was taken aback by the amazing
variety of 25 kinds of desserts including Continental and Indian delights. I sampled a few of the Continental delights like hazelnut Praline, brownie, Chocolate truffle, baked yogurt, mud cake, baked chocolate tart, chocolate salted caramel et al. Baring baked yogurt, all are melt-in-mouth chocolate delicacies and were divine to taste but were heavy-on-the-stomach. If you still want to pamper your sweet tooth with Indian desserts, there are Besan Ke Ladoo, Gulab Jamun, Phirni and the traditional Bengali sweets like Sandesh and Chamcham. One should not miss out on ice creams. All those who are interested to indulge their taste buds can shell out Rs 1,250 per person and relish the culinary extravaganza offered at the buffet lunch of the restaurant. Verdict: This is undoubtedly the destination for discerning food lovers where there are a lot of options for Asian food from South- East Asia and Far East. Gourmet lovers can customise and make their own salads. The dessert section abounds in plenty. For well-travelled guests, this is the place to head for eclectic and delectable dishes, impeccable service on offer and a plethora of food choices. Gourmets also get to learn a lot about the way of preparing their favourite dishes in the live counters. So what are you waiting for? If you prefer to indulge your taste buds at a five-star dining during the festive times, look no further beyond and just go ahead.

Iceland Airwaves was started in 1999 as a party sponsored by Iceland’s favorite airline, Icelandair, throwing a music concert in an airplane hangar. This homegrown festival later outgrew the original venue and now transforms downtown Reykjavík into a city-wide festival full of art, music, fashion and fun. This music festival is known for its intimacy and party spirit. Late night lovers, fans of intimate shows, quirky clubs and even quirkier destinations: rejoice, it is your festival!
November 4, 2017 Location: Lewes, England

The Lewes Bonfire Night celebrations is the biggest celebrated Fifth November event in the world, and is held in the usually peaceful county town of Lewes East Sussex, every year on 5th November, and the carnival or festival is known as the Lewes Bonfire Night or just simply the Fifth. Remember, remember, The Fifth of November, Gunpowder treason and plot; For I see no reason, Why Gunpowder Treason, Should ever be forgot! Every year on November 5th, Brits light bonfires and set off fireworks to remember their good luck in stumbling upon Guy Fawkes just before he attempted to blow up Parliament in 1605.
Location: Oaxaca, Mexico November 2, 2017
Día de los Muertos The Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the United States. It is acknowledged internationally in many other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. In 2008, the tradition was inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. In this culture, the lines between life and death are blurred and the acceptance of mortality becomes liberation from fear. Indeed, life and death live on parallel planes in Mexico. This beautiful festival has a profound life lesson that transcends life itself.

FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD
November 3-5, 2017 Location: Chiang Mai, Thailand
Yi Peng and Loy Krathong (Lantern Festival) Loy Krathong is a festival celebrated annually throughout southwestern Thai cultures. The name could be translated as "to float a basket", and comes from the tradition of making krathong or buoyant, decorated baskets, which are then floated on a river. Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. Loi Krathong coincides with the Lanna (northern Thai) festival known as Yi Peng. Swarms of Lanna-style sky lanterns are launched into the air where they resemble large shoals of giant fluorescent jellyfish gracefully floating through the sky. In 2017, the full moon falls on Saturday, 4 November 2017, but in many places (including Chiang Mai) the main celebration will be from Friday, 3 November to Sunday, 5 November, 2017.
November 4, 2017 Location: India (majorly North India)
Guru Nanak Jayanti Guru Nanak Jayanti also known as Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Guru Nanak's Prakash Utsav is one of the grandest and most visual celebrations in India, marking the birthday of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh gurus. The festival falls on the full moon, or Kartik Poornima, which is a lovely sight given that the location is the Golden Temple with a lake surrounding it. With the Golden Temple lit up, twinkling lights surrounding the lake, a full moon glistening and Sikhs donning turbans and their finest silks, Nanak Jayanti is a festival made for the visually-minded folks of the world. You may see people performing Gatka, a Sikh martial art and there’s a continuous reading of the holy book Guru Granth Sahib beginning 48 hours before the main event.
