Landmark move, more needs to be done Government of India’s recent decision to liberalize visa process for tourists intending to visit India and to start electronic travel authorization (ETA) is very significant to facilitate arrivals of foreign tourists in the country. Not surprisingly, the Indian tourism industry has unanimously applauded the decision. Definitely the new visa initiatives have addressed some long standing demands of the Indian tourism industry. With its rich cultural diversity, natural resources and great heritages, India has potential to become one of the top ranking tourist destinations in the world. But for different reasons, the country has not been able to tap its tourism potentials substantially. There are many challenges the Indian tourism industry is facing today. Lack of adequate tourism infrastructure remains a perennial problem for the tourism sector. Complicated and exorbitant tax structure is one of the other problems for the Indian tourism industry. Such taxation regime not only creates hurdles for the industry and tourists, but also makes India an expensive destination. Considering the contribution of the tourism industry to the whole economy in terms of jobs-creation, income generation and foreign exchange earnings, governments, both the Union as well as states should accord high priority to the tourism sector to get maximum benefits from it. Going forward, governments should focus on improving tourist infrastructure and simplifying the existing taxation regime for the industry.
Quote of the Month
“
Distance has been no barrier to communication between the people of India and Korea since ancient times, and we are determined to bring them ever closer in the years that lie ahead. The Cultural Centres set up in Seoul and New Delhi have energized people-to-people engagement. Korean tourists are visiting India in increasing numbers. I have conveyed to President Park the decision of the Government of India to extend a ‘tourist visa on arrival facility’ to nationals of the Republic of Korea. We are also exploring the possibility of better civil aviation links.

source markets for the Indian hospitality sector, contributing 23% of the overall demand in 2012-13. however, it has been observed that their share continues to decline as witnessed by the 4.3% drop this year as compared to last year’s arrivals. This may be attributed to the fact that Indian hotels have seen a greater contribution from the Middle East, Russia, and the SAARC nations. The rise in visitation from Asia and the Middle East may be attributed to the improved connectivity, easier visa norms and infrastructure development. Promising new TAAI-NR team conducts its first meet A promising new team of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI)-Northern Region (NR) recently held its first meeting in New Delhi. The meeting was conducted differently than meetings in the past. Each and every member got a chance to interact and give valuable suggestions to the committee. This is a step in the right direction since the members are more involved and enthusiastic which will hopefully help TAAI regain its lost glory and cater to the larger interest of the industry.
