I am filling in Srishti’s section in this issue as she has been travelling abroad and could not write for her section. The last month saw a deep fall in value of the rupee vis-à-vis USD. The depreciation of the Indian currency just before the beginning of the festive season in the country must be a cause of concern for Indian travelers, who are planning to have their holidays abroad during the festive season. It may also be a concern for Indian outbound tour operators, whose business may also be affected adversely due to the strengthening of US Dollar as a strong USD impacts Indian outbound travel. Read our story (page no. 8) on the impact of the strong USD on the Indian outbound travel to know the perspective of travel experts. However, a falling Rupee can be good news for Indian Inbound and Domestic Tourism as strong USD and weak Indian currency will make travelling to India comparatively cheaper for foreign tourists whereas many Indian travelers may also opt for visiting domestic destinations rather than going abroad in view of the increased cost of foreign holidays. The Indian inbound tourism season is just round the corner, and the Union Ministry of Tourism and State Tourism Boards as well as Indian inbound tour operators must cash in on the devaluation of the Rupee to attract maximum foreign tourists during the forthcoming inbound tourism season.

The efforts should also be made to create awareness in overseas markets about India’s e-Tourist visa facility, as nationals of many countries who are eligible for e- Tourist Visa are unaware of this facility. The efforts should also be made by stakeholders to promote domestic tourism in the country, which remains the backbone of the country’s tourism industry and has potential to save dollars for the country. The fate of the much touted Goods & Services Tax (GST) Bill is still in limbo, however the government and the industry remain hopeful of its early implementation as there is near unanimity among political parties on its significance for the economy. The implementation of GST will bring much sought-after relief for Indian hotel industry which is currently plagued by the multiple taxes. Read our story on GST (page no.18) to know the expectation of the hotel industry from the GST. India’s oldest travel trade body, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) has announced the date of the elections of its national office-bearers including its president. The elections are schedule to take place on September 30. Let’s hope that after the elections, TAAI will get a dynamic and visionary national team, which will regain the lost glory of TAAI and espouse the cause of its members as well as that of the whole travel and tourism industry.

India’s share in the international travel market is increasing fast, and the country will soon emerge as one of the largest outbound travel markets in the word. That is reason the national tourism boards of various countries are increasing their presence and promotional efforts in India bound travel. Sharing his outlook for Indian outbound travel, Sinha said that India is expected to emerge as one of the key sources of outbound traffic in the coming years. There are many positive factors influencing Indian demand for outbound travel, according to Sinha. “The national economy has been strong and middle-class disposable in-

We expect things to move further within the next one year MPSTDC (Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corpo- ration) has also taken conscious steps in this direction and has de- veloped conference facilities at as many as 38 of its 72 hotel properties for conferences of up to a size of 400 pax. Although Indore is best suited for large-scale events like congresses, association meetings, and conventions, destinations such as Panchmarhi, Maheshwar, Orccha, Khajuraho, Jabalpur, Gwalior as well as many of the wildlife destinations like Bandavgarh and Pench among others are fully geared for small-sized conferences and incentives tours. In order to attract investment in the development of new convention centres in the state, the government is offering capital subsidy that can go upto 10 crores. MP Tourism is also coming up with land parcels which will be offered on long term lease to parties interested in building convention centres and hotel, he informed.

Gujarat based hospitality major The Grand Bhagwati’s (TGB) has added another meeting venue to Indore’s growing profile in this area. According to TGB’s Mansi Sadhu, TGB Palace, Indore, is till date the company’s most ambitious project with massive meetings and conferencing facility which also good for large banquettes and grand weddings. Its two halls can seat 1200 and 1500 people at a time and outdoor area can host 2500 people at a time. It will also have 115-key luxury hotel property that is expected to open door soon. TGB Palace, Indore was also the venue of 31st Annual IATO Convention last month. MP @ incentives MP is incentives’ haven. Blessed with abundant natural beauty and a rich history and heritage, MP is home to three World Heritage Sites, nine National Parks and 25 sanctuaries. The state offers a wide range of destinations for incentives tour, from hill station of Panchmarhi and Orccha to wild lives’ of Kanha, Pench and Bandavgarh to forts and temples at Gwalior, Burhanpur and Khajuraho. In conclusion Madhya Pradesh has definitely begun to scratch at the surface in realising the immense potential of Business tourism, popularly or broadly known in India as MICE tourism. However in the absence of a strong local or national body as well as the lack of knowledge resource in this area can squarely jeopardise this opportunity. Tourism is one sector that is now being overwhelmingly recognised as a private sector driven area and therefore it would be novel for the private sector in the state, particularly those in Indore, to join hands and take the lead in boosting states profile as a MICE destination.

Hotel Industry cautiously optimistic of the impact of GST The hotel Industry is hopeful that implementation of Goods & Servies Taxes (GST) will impact it positively, but there is concern about the possible high rate of GST for the industry. The industry is awaiting clarity on the GST rate. The actual impact of GST on the hotel industry will depend on the GST rate applicable to the industry.

South East Asian countries and China. One of the main objectives is to increase ease of doing business in addition to reducing taxes. According to Gaur, the implementation of GST will definitely increase the ease of doing business in the hotel industry because currently multiple taxes involve a lot of paper works, and will improve competitiveness of India as a tourist destination, helping it compete with its neighbouring and nearby countries.
