We have to share our experiences in different fields. Tourism is a joint effort between countries. All of us, especially countries in South East Asia, need to work together to create a win-win situation. We don’t have to talk in terms of inbound and outbound but in the wider interest of tourism industry, wider interest of the multi-fold benefit of tourism,” Sharma said. This was not only amply manifested in Union Minister of State for Tourism & Culture (Independent Charge) and Civil Aviation, Mahesh Sharma’s address at SATTE 2016 but also in the details shared by Secretary of Tourism, Government of India, Vinod Zutshi, on expanding the scope of e Tourist Visa that aims at facilitating greater ease of travel to India and hence help in increased people to people interactions between communities and countries. In an impassioned plea for tourism to be considered for its “multi-fold results, multi-fold effects”, Sharma said, “Tourism is not just about visiting one part of the world to another part of the world, or one country to another country or one place to another. ‘2015 was a year of milestones for us in this region’ 2015 was a year of milestones for VFS Global in South Asia, which launched several new visa application centres last year. How was 2015 for the visa service industry? How eventful has the year been for VFS
Global in particular? Globally, the travel and tourism sector has been growing fast, and in economies like ours, outbound travel is on a steady rise. Naturally, the visa service industry has been positively impacted by this. Apart from this, several other developments have contributed to make 2015 a year of milestones for us in this region. We successfully launched several new visa application centres, with pan-India rollouts for 7 more client governments. In November, we successfully started biometric enrolments for Schengen countries at our centres (in keeping with the new European Union regulations), and in December, we launched our flagship joint visa application centre in New Delhi. Currently, we serve 35 governments, out of 350 visa application centres in 19 cities in India. So overall, it has been an

Q
How will you summarize the growth of VFS Global in India over the years?
Today, VFS Global is present in 123 countries worldwide serving 48 client governments. But its origins are in India where visa process outsourcing as a concept was pioneered by our CEO Zubin Karkaria in 2001. Our first client was the US consulate in Mumbai, and ever since then, we have grown at a steady pace, and have won a majority share of global contracts in this industry, with around 50 percent market share worldwide. Processing our 100 millionth application last May was not only a major achievement for a company that’s just 14 years old, it was also testament to the single-minded commitment of our teams and the active guidance of our leadership.
Q
What are your plans and priorities for 2016?
Last year, we launched several visa application centres for new clients and introduced fresh initiatives, such as biometrics capability at all our centres. For 2016, our focus will be to further consolidate our position by expanding our client portfolio and our presence. In south India, for instance, we will be looking to launch more consolidated centres. Overall, our strategy is to continuously build on our strengths to offer greater flexibility and convenience for applicants, as well as more personalisation and exclusivity in customer services to enhance their visa application experience.

There are many pictures being taken today, more than the percentage taken before. The conundrum to this is the influx of smartphones with built-in cameras; smartphone users are ditching their standalone cameras and shooting pictures with their phone cameras, instead. A noteworthy aspect here is that 65% share of travelers prefer android smartphones in comparison to Apple handsets for smartphone travel photography. Among Android users, Kitkat tops the charts and is used by 43.65% Android users. While the smartphone can almost certainly take good photographs, it might need a little help to

Expectation high from the Union Budget 2016 Indian Travel & Hospitality Industry has high expectation from the Union Budget 2016. They expect the budget to focus on improving the overall environment of the tourism industry.
v B PREM KUMAR Y
The Modi Government has promised high priority to tourism sector, however, steps taken so far are not enough. Now that government will complete two years in office, it is high time to act on its promises. The next budget presentation could be the opportune occasion to make a new beginning and reignite new hope. Vinod Zutshi, Tourism Secretary, Government of India said he is optimistic of the next budget. He informed that the MoT is pushing for Infrastructure status for the hotel industry, which has been the long standing demand of the country’s hotel industry. “We have been pushing for this status for long time and we will continue to do so in future as well. “I am hopeful that the next budget will carry some good things for the industry. We had discussion with the industry to know their expectation from the budget and included their suggestions in our proposal to the Finance Ministry,” said Zutshi. Seeking Infrastructure Status for the hotel industry has always been on our agenda; he said and informed that a group constituted by the PM also suggested infrastructure status for this industry. However, he added that the

rest of the tourism sector does not need any incentive. “Small enterprises may need some financial incentives, but rest of the sector does not need any incentive,” said Zutshi. Tourism sector has immense growth potential for the economy. Tourism has been a key contributor to the Indian economy with immense possibilities of growth,” said Ankur Bhatia, Executive Director, Bird Group. “While the government’s initiatives to strengthen domestic connectivity as well as international accessibility have borne positive results, there is a huge gap in terms of travel facilities, infrastructure, hotels, recreational outlets, high taxes and tourist safety that still needs to be addressed,” said Bhatia, adding that a thriving tourism industry not only reinforces the hospitality sector but also contributes significantly to the economic growth and drives direct and indirect employment. As for his expectation from the union budget, Bhatia adds, “This union budget we are hopeful that the government will focus on the overall environment of the tourism industry and help drive the industry towards its projected growth. It is time to showcase brand India globally and provide sufficient impetus to put India firmly on the international tourist radar and we are hopeful that the government will consider effective solutions for the same.” One of the concerns of the Indian hospitality industry has been that it is highly taxed. “Indian hospitality industry is taxed heavily.
COVER STORY We hope that once GST comes into force there will be some rationalization in taxation applicable to our industry,” said SP Jain, MD, The Pride Group of Hotels. “We have to keep in mind that we are competing with international markets. Our neighboring countries have 10 per cent tax for the hotel industry. Because of their low taxation, countries like Singapore, Malaysia are able to attract more tourists than us,” said Jain, adding, “But as our PM recognizes the importance of Tourism industry, we hope that in future, the government will make this industry more competitive by levying reasonable taxes and granting complete infrastructure status to the hotel industry. Once all these benefits are granted, we will attract more foreign tourists.” Jain said that the government has granted infrastructure status to new hotel projects upto Rs 200 crore. “But we request the Finance Minister that there should not be any discrimination between old and new projects and all those benefits that are available to the future projects should be extended to present projects as well,” said Jain, adding that the incentives given to start-ups should also be extended to the hotel industry. Currently there are many taxes such as luxury tax, VAT and service tax, said Jain, suggesting that these taxes should be merged into one hotel tax, which should be in range of 10-12 as Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and other countries have. Only then we will be able to compete in international market and attract more tourists. With foreign tourist arrivals in the country registering a very modest growth last year, it is challenging time for the travel and tourism industry. The forthcoming budget must provide for financial measures to augment the sector. SN Srivastava, President, Clarks Inn Group of hotels said that it is high time that the government shows that PM’s T for Tourism is indeed embedded in the budget. Two critical areas that we would want the government to attend to in this budget are a tourism friendly GST and investor friendly environment for budget hotel developers. GST is an urgent need of the hour.” He added that India is probably one of the most tourism taxed countries in the world. We are a very uncompetitive destination in the world. Also budget hotel developers need to be wooed with greater financial incentives and low-rate bank loans. The effect will be immediate and, as hotel industry allows 100 per cent FDI, not only huge overseas investment can follow but even a lot of investment will come from within.”
Riyaaz Amlani, President, NRAI said that the restaurant industry would welcome positive changes from the budget which can reduce both the license and tax burdens of the industry. “The need for a unified tax system is paramount. Quick implementation of GST is what the industry is expecting from the budget this year,” SN Srivastava Co-founder & President said Amlani, adding that the restaurant inClarks Inn Group of Hotels dustry has been a significant contributor to the country’s overall economy and it is important for the government to recognize its contribution and give it the infrastructure status. According to Karan Anand, Head Relationships, Cox & Kings, the tourism industry should be treated at par with exporters Karan Anand Head Relationships,Cox & Kings based on its foreign exchange earnings. “Tourism industry gets discriminated vis-a -vis exporters. It does not get any benefits that exporters of goods receive in spite of the fact that it earns foreign exchange and its retention of foreign exchange is much higher than any other export oriented industry,” said Anand. He added that like exporters, based on foreign exchange Riyaaz Amlani President, NRAI earnings, tour operators should also get exemption of service tax on package tours as the payment is received in foreign exchange. “With the service tax added at present, India packages loose on account of price competitiveness and cannot match the prices on holiday packages, which are offered by our competitive countries like China, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Hong Kong etc. Service tax is levied for the services provided to Indian tourists visiting neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives etc., which was not there prior to July 2012. This needs to be withdrawn as services are provided outside India,” Said Anand.
Expectation from Union Budget 2016 for Aviation: Ankur Bhatia, Executive Director, Bird Group and Member, CII National Committee on Civil Aviation says: The Indian aviation industry is on a high growth trajectory and is poised to become the third largest travel market by 2026. The draft aviation policy as well as airport development in tier-I and Tier-II cities is a welcome move in identifying certain relevant aspects affecting the aviation sector. Yet there are several challenges related to complex policies, aggressive price cuts, multi-tiered tax system and infrastructure deterring the true potential of the Indian aviation industry. I look forward these challenges to be addressed in the upcoming union budget. There is an immense growth potential for Indian civil aviation and with the right infrastructure and policies will serve as a key enabler for economic growth, employment creation and tax revenues. It is imperative that success of civil aviation is seen as a national priority, a goal shared by different ministries, government agencies and the industry."

Minister of State for Tourism Department Jayesh Radadia said that the Kite Festival which has been organized by the Tourism Department of Gujarat is became center of attraction for Indian-foreign kitists. Makarsankranti is uniquely celebrated in Gujarat. Gujarat’s Kite Festival also has an economic significance. It provides employment opportunities to many local people who, months before the festival, start manufacturing kites and many other things related to kite flying. During the festival Kite enthusiasts throng the local markets to buy kites. Patang Bazaar is one of the many famous Kite markets located in central Ahmedabad. Visits of kite enthusiasts and tourists during the festival give boost economic activities in the state. Apart from economic significance, the kite festival also bring people particularly youth and children together to celebrate the festivals, which helps in enhancing social understating in the state. The International Kite Event is organized every year in Ahmedabad in the month of January. The main venue to fly kites and enjoy festivals is the Sabarmati Riverfront. The festival attracts kitists and tourists from many parts of the world. Kitists participate in the festivals with their own kites. Each kite is incredibly different from other in color and design.
