I feel compelled to start this editorial by vehemently condemning the tragic bomb attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport. This tragedy is only the latest in the series of abominable terrorist attacks we’ve witnessed over the past few years. Whether the target is a hotel in Mumbai, an airport and metro station in Brussels, the London tube or a skyscraper in Manhattan, the whole world suffers. And I would like to assert that though these events might highlight the troubled world we are living in, where a group of monsters heartlessly take innocent lives; they are not a reason to stop traveling. In fact this is a time more than ever that people need to travel to broaden their horizons and promote cross-cultural exchange. We all need to be ambassadors of global goodwill because a world formed by misconceptions and mistrust is a much greater risk than any attack by beastly terrorists. On a more positive note, the firstever civil aviation policy has taken off

(pg.22). Have you been looking forward to the debut of this civil aviation policy? The hype surrounding the policy has been building for some time and the wait is finally over. Our story offers an overview of the various strategies laid out in the policy to improve the aviation sector and explains how people in the industry think these strategies may change the flying game. Also in the July issue is a brief analysis of the impact of Brexit (pg.18). As you must all be aware this June witnessed Britain voting to exit the European Union and so Brexit took place in the height of the summer travel season. What the long-term impact of this decision will be is still opaque but Indian passengers heading to Britain soon can get the most ‘bang for their buck’ by enjoying the lower exchange rates (the British pound, has recorded its lowest rate in about 30 years after the results of the vote were published). This will also give a chance to more Indian travelers to enjoy Britain, which has traditionally been considered a very expensive tourist destination and hence avoided by many. To enjoy previously published stories visit our website www.tnhglobal.com. Happy flying!

STAR ALLIANCE DETERMINES NEXT STEPS IN SERVICE ENHANCEMENT Multi-million dollar technology projects and future operating standards were given green light by Star Alliance’s Chief Executive Board.

The Chief Executives of the Star Alliance member airlines recently gave the goahead for new technology investment and wide-ranging enhancements to operational processes to meet the evolving demands of today’s travellers. As a direct result of these decisions, Star Alliance will invest in multi-million dollar technology projects, which will include a new Alliance IT hub for baggage. This new IT hub is scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2016 and is the latest in a series of similar “plug and play” applications which are supporting the member airlines behind the scenes. REPORT

Trend reveals an ‘extended summer’ this year Thomas Cook India Ltd has released its 2016 Indian Summer Travel Report Card (ISTRC’16). This in-depth study provides interesting insights into how Indians travelled this summer – the new trends observed, new destinations which came up on the travellers’ radar, which destinations trended the most! According to ISTRC’16: Seasonality trends-Extended Summer: A unique trend specific to Summer 2016 was that of an extended summer season across source markets. Typically, India’speak summer travel season for West and South India covers April and May. However, this season, saw demand extending into the months of June and July courtesy varying vacation periods across school boards- starting as early as mid-March. Slow Travel: Another interesting observation this season was the emergence of Slow Travel with options like ‘walking tours’ seeing uptake. Slow Travel is intended for travellers who appreciate the journey (as against merely the destination), are curious to learn via traveland absorb myriad experiences enroute. First-Ever Civil Aviation Policy takes off The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the National Civil Aviation Policy 2016 in New Delhi on June 15. This long-awaited, historic and ambitious new policy is the most comprehensive policy. The first of its kind; the policy covers a wide range of areas. It aims to bolster growth in the country’s civil aviation sector by tapping its high potential and making air travel accessible and affordable for the common man. The target is to make India 3rd largest civil aviation traffic market in the world by 2022 from its current 9th position.

v B PREM KUMAR Y

The new policy has widened the scope of competition in the aviation industry by scraping of 5/20 rule and liberalizing regime of bilateral rights. With the abolition of 5/20 rule, the competition on the international routes will grow and flyers will have more options to fly overseas. The policy also promises to improve regional connectivity and make flying affordable for people in India’s hinterland.

Here are 10 takeaways from the Civil Aviation Policy 2016: Rule 5/20 Abolished The new civil aviation policy has amended the decade-long 5/20 overseas flying norm.

‘The New Civil Aviation Policy is a progressive step’ The National Civil Aviation Policy is a progressive step taken to simplify systems and processes, says Phee Teik Yeoh, CEO, Vistara. Welcoming the amendment in 5/20 rule, Yeoh said, “The restrictive 5/20 rule has made way for a more liberal 0/20 rule and we hope this is a first step in the unconditional removal of this rule.” The National Civil Aviation Policy is a progressive step taken to simplify systems and processes that have been finalized through detailed consultation and discussions with all stakeholders. From end customers to carriers and also to MRO service providers, the new policy takes a balanced view of the interests of all stakeholders and ensures empowerment to each of them. Measures taken by the government towards regional connectivity provide the middle class consumers with an alternate travel option. RESORT REVIEW

GILI LANKANFUSHI THE ULTIMATE ROBINSON CRUSOE EXPERIENCE Shoes are not allowed, guests cycle to get around the property and sharks come right up to the jetty. Need I say more? B SRISHTI RAI v In a country where each island and the luxury resort it homes looks Y

like a gorgeous picture-postcard deciding where to stay is a rather daunting task. Even then Gili Lankanfushi’s picturesque beauty doesn’t fail to impress. My husband and I first laid eyes on the property from the hotel speedboat. It was out of this world, a blue and green paradise where nature has been generous enough to bestow all its best boons. The entire place, including the construction is born out of fantasy and magic and luckily the owners have been smart enough to let it retain its natural splendor by carefully preserving the island’s native vegetation and beauty. Now, a friendly welcome is always reassuring, and so our personal Mr. Friday met us as soon as we arrived to hand over our keys, and show us around the resort and our villa. But that’s not all, the service is so personalized that even the resort manager made time to receive and send us off. In a matter of a day, we knew the staff on a first name basis and vise versa.

Getting There There are direct flights to Maldives from a number of cities in India. You can fly directly from Bangalore, Kochi and Trivandrum. Once you arrive at Male International Airport, Gili Lankanfushi is just a 20-minute boat- ride away. Since most other hotels require guests to take an additional tiring flight to reach them, this makes Gili one of the most easily accessible luxury resorts in the island nation.

Who for Guests who enjoy discrete luxury and want to relax in green, peaceful and luscious surroundings. Some of the most awe-inspiring views in the world are just an added benefit for romantic honeymooners.

from all over Asia. What’s even better? The experience choice isn’t limited to Asian street food; there is a different market and grill night every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Another authentic offering is the underground cave that doubles as a wine cellar. Guests have the opportunity to taste world-class chocolates, cheeses, and wines- all underground. Then there is the exclusive and ultra-romantic opportunity to enjoy a private dinner with your significant other on your own private island. The list goes on….

Accommodation The accommodation is by far the star of the Gili experience. Most resorts only offer superficial luxury, meaning beneath the pretense of being dedicated to catering solely to guests they try to cut corners wherever possible. This is most evident when it comes to room size. Even though in a place like Maldives maximum luxury resorts offer spacious suites nothing compares to the bungalow styled suites at the Gili. The resort has only 45 villa suites and even the most basic category (where I stayed) is large compared to any other resort I have visited world over. All the thatch- roof villas are in the water and have an open-air living room, a sun deck with breezy views, a huge bathroom, a private natural dipping pool, a spacious bedroom and a private rooftop sundeck. Guests are usually spoilt for choice on where to relax and I found it tempting not to leave the accommodation altogether. If the quaint bedroom doesn’t satisfy you (very unlikely), there is an option to sleep under the stars. You simply need to phone your personal Mr. Friday and he will setup your roof deck with a comfortable bed to fall asleep under one of the clearest skies in the entire world today.

Amenities Like most places in the Maldives snorkeling is incredible around the entire resort. The surrounding reef is very healthy and hence the marine life is plentiful, from colorful fish to turtles and mantas and even dolphins and sharks, you are never disappointed with your spotting. You can simply jump in the water from the sundeck of your overwater suite and explore away. But what is truly fantastic is the properties night snorkeling excursion. Your guide will hand you special light goggles before jumping into the water and then you can marvel at the enchanting glowing coral that surrounds the island. Gili Lankanfushi also boasts of the charming Meera Spa. Unfortunately, during our visit the spa was being renovated. None-the-less, we indulged in a couple’s massage at the makeshift spa. The masseuse was so skilled I quickly found myself drifting away to another planet. It is the perfect escape for those trying to forget the stresses of everyday life. Then there is also the unique Jungle Cinema. Guest can watch a movie under the stars at the resorts outdoor forest theatre. The catalog of things to do does not end here. The island has enough activities that you can occupy yourself with a new activity daily for weeks. Unfortunately, this is all I could experience during my short stay.

Food and Wine There are a several options for guests to wine and dine. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch at the Overwater Bar where I savored some of the freshest seafood I have ever tasted. However, what really impressed me was the experiential pop-up Asian street food night market. There was a lavish display of some of the most delectable traditional dishes

28

TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY | JULY 2016

What’s Nearby? Male city is only a short boat ride away. However, the island is secluded enough that you would not suspect there is any other civilization for miles and that’s exactly the point. As with all island resorts in Maldives, once you’ve arrived at your destination, you won’t need to leave. Everything a guest could possibly require is provided for in the property. Even the staff lives on the island and there’s nothing to disturb your tranquility.

Negatives Gili is both priceless and pricey. Although most resorts in these phenomenal islands are pricey, Gili with its top-end offering comes with a heftier price tag.

Verdict I have always been an ambassador of holistic and responsible tourism. True luxury travel makes you feel good inside out. This is the mantra on which Gili Lankanfushi operates. It one of the first devoutly eco friendly resorts in the Maldives and this philosophy remains the driving force till date. Considering that it has built on the concept of luxury in a way that is sustainable it is more noteworthy than regular hedonistic and opulent retreats. Gili life encourages you to make small lifestyle changes while you are a guest there. Incorporating little things like the no news no shoes policy, coming up with the concept of Gili time which gifts you an extra hour of sunlight and pushing you to cycle around the resort helps energize the body, mind and soul, leaving one not just relaxed but rejuvenated. This differentiating characteristic coupled with the exquisite five-star barefoot island luxury the resort offers urges me to endorse Gili to all my readers.

Spice trail The most convenient spice trail from Panjim is a 30 km drive to Tropical Spice Plantation, sprawling over 120 acres of land area at Keri hamlet in Ponda. Appealing Coconut handicrafts of Goa Once the spice tour is over, the best destination to gape at the coconut handicrafts of Goa is at the Tropical Spice Plantation. Crafting coconut idols is an age-old craft practised in Goa. One can look for exquisitely crafted monkeys with the coconut husk comprising the body parts of the monkey. There are Ganesha idols made of coconut and bowls made of coconut shells. Fine-dining experience at Calangute beach A 17 km drive from Panjim brings you to Calangute beach in the district of Calangute and is the one of the most crowded beaches in north Goa. For those looking for fine-dining experience at

Calangute becah, head to Destination One. The saying goes well that Goa will never be the same again without Destination One. One can enjoy some panoramic views of the beach while dining at Destination One. Be it Continental, Chinese, Portuguese or Goan, the fine-dining restaurant has unlimited cuisine options. Display of Konkani cuisine at Calangute Beach For those interested to dabble in Konkani cuisine, catch up with the live demonstration of Konkani dishes at Destination One where the chefs would rustle up the ethnic delights of Goa with the right mixing of local spices. Sunset at River Mandovi If you want to snatch a moment of solitude, then take some time out and watch the sun going down from the banks of river Mandovi at Panjim. Watching the sunset at river Mandovi is a delightful experience with the gently breeze blowing during the twilight hours and ships sailing at a distance in the midst of serenity.

ously strive to do the same and aim higher every time. How important is the MICE/event segment for your hotel? What is their contribution in your total business? Industry predictions indicate that the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) sector is poised for vigorous growth. Recuperating after the recession, it is springing back, stronger than ever. The demand for meetings is on the rise and though companies are not splurging, luxury venues are not being ruled out either. In general, there are some emerging trends which have been observed. The Claridges is the ideal setting for corporate events and conferences. The stateof-the-art conference halls and meeting rooms are equipped with modern technology and facilities along with latest audiovideo equipment and Wi-Fi. Despite growing as a MICE destination, India is yet to attract a sizable amount of international travellers from the segment.

Q

According to you, what are the new and emerging trends in the hotel industry? Changes in the macro environment in terms of technology, economic situation, cultural and generational differences, political uncertainty, etc. cause shifts in the hotel industry cycle. In recent years consumer behavior in the international hospitality sector has changed dramatically. The ’new’ consumer has become the fastest growing customer segment within the hospitality industry. The ‘new’ consumer has always the problem with the shortage of time. The ‘new’ consumer base includes people born between 1980 and 2000, hold $200 billion in spending power and represent the most lucrative market for hoteliers. Therefore all the solutions that are effective and fast mean the way to success. As a result, the importance of the up-to-date information has increased.

Q

This consumer segment is interested in utilizing technology to do things that many others have adopted to do manually: checking in at hotels, paying their restaurant and bar bills and looking up places to eat, shop and play to name a few. This new segment is very demanding and expects high quality services from the commercial accommodations. Therefore customer service is strongly highlighted among the new trends in the hospitality industry. Easily accessible information coupled with economic uncertainty has made today's tourists extremely discerning in their choices regarding the hotel properties they book and how they book them. Meanwhile, hotel keepers are under pressure to maximize occupancy, fight for every guest and earn their loyalty. Simply relying on offline marketing practices, offering a promotion or two, or counting on online travel agencies (OTAs) to fill rooms is not enough anymore. It is obvious that this is a disrupted marketplace for hoteliers. If the hospitality industry wants to react immediately on the arising demand, it should be aware of the new emerging trends.

How do you look at the current state of hotel business in the country? Has the situation improved as compared to a couple of years back? The Indian tourism and hospitality industry has materialized as one of the key drivers of growth among the services sectors in India. It contributes to 6.23 percent to the National GDP and 8.78 percent to the total employment in the country. Constant transformation, functional growth and improving standards have gained the hospitality industry of India approval all over the world. Tourism in India has generated immense employment opportunities and is a vital source of foreign exchange for the country. The travel and tourism industry contributed Rs 2.17 trillion (US$ 36 billion) or 2 per cent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013.The figures are expected to rise to Rs 4.35 trillion (US$ 72.17 billion) by 2024. The revenue from domestic tourism is likely to grow by 8.2 per cent in 2015 as compared to 5.1 per cent a year ago, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). The Indian hospitality sector has been growing at a cumulative annual growth rate of 14 per cent every year adding significant amount of foreign exchange to the economy.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR THE

MONSOON SEASON

Monsoon season is just around the corner. In India, this season is awaited with bated breath as it gives relief from summer’s scorching heat and during this season India’s beauty is at its peak. Ironically, the monsoon also spells significant discounts when it comes to domestic accommodation and travelling. So, if you are planning to take a break from day-to-day hectic work schedules, this season is the best for leisure holidays. Some of the most popular tourist destinations during monsoon season are Leh-Ladakh, Kerala, Goa and Madhya Pradesh to name a few. You are sure to have an incredible vacation experience when you visit but you must keep in mind some important tips while planning your travel during Monsoon season.

v B ARCHANA SHARMA Y

TnH has listed some of the most useful tips: Pack Clothes and other essentials in water-proof bags/cases First of all, pack all your clothes and other essentials in a light and water-proof bag, so that your things remain dry. If you are travelling during the rains then you will surely get caught in the rain sooner or later and clothes tend to remain damp. So, it is best to pack more light cotton clothes or comfortable partially synthetic clothes. It is also a good idea to purchase a plastic case for your phone, wallet and passport and ensure that electronic goods are kept securely dry in your bag. Some other interesting items to pack along are board games like ludo, chess, story books and other books of your choice to spend joyful time at your hotel room while there is heavy downpour outside. Also, don’t forget to carry an umbrella or a raincoat. If you are planning to have picnics whilst on the road, it is useful to pack dry mats / plastic sheets to spread out on wet surfaces. Keep Repellents and a First Aid Kit

Benefits of Ayurveda in Monsoon It’s often said that you can get best of benefits of Ayurveda during monsoon season. So, don’t forget to rejuvenate yourself by indulging in Ayurvedic treatments offered around India. Choose Practical Footwear After heavy rainfall, the roads tend to get slippery. So, make sure you wear weather suitable shoes. Floaters and sandals are the best options for footwear during monsoon season. Otherwise, proper rain-proof shoes like flip-flops, rubber slippers and gumboots will be of great help while travelling. Follow the weather report and news of the place Before planning a monsoon trip, do follow the weather report and news of the place you will be visiting. You’re probably

So, it’s best to carry your own first aid kit, which must contain disinfectant scrubs, bandages and antiseptic cream, some regular pain killers and medicines for stomach problems. Q

Could you please provide some statistics giving an overall inbound scenario to Czech?

The Embassy of the Czech Republic accepted in the first half of this year almost 7,000 visa applications. However, the number of people who would like to visit the Czech Republic together with some neighboring countries is steadily growing. If the last year the number of visa applications were about 13,000 for the whole year, today with this trend we can except that the final statistic data at the end of this year should be substantially higher.

Q

How is the air-connectivity between the two countries?

We are committed to explore the options of resuming direct air connectivity between the two countries. The direct air linkage between Delhi and Prague (run by Air India) was suspended in 1991 but there is an urgent need of putting this service back in place considering the growing bilateral trade exchanges and tourists footfall. The bilateral trade between the two countries presently stands at Astronomical Clock, Prague

To summarize: Prague is a romantic city of many faces. From gothic cathedrals to superb quality dining experience followed by long lasting culture of Prague cafes - places where famous writers (Franz Kafka), poets, playwrights (Václav Havel), filmmakers (Miloš Forman) and actors spent most of their time discussing their work and world around them, followed by modern Czech design (Dancing house, events like Meet Czech Design, Design Market etc.). Prague is definitely a no. 1 destination to visit when you come to Czech Republic. Pilsen is known as a world's capital of beer and also European Capital of Culture 2015. Northern Czech Republic is known for its beautiful natural landscape and is just an hour from Prague (Czech Paradise, Czech Switzerland). It has a unique historical heritage (Kost castle, Trosky castle) and is also the land of famous Czech glassmakers (Preciosa, Moser). Southern Moravia - land of wine, sun drained wine fields, chateauxes (Lednice-Valtice complex), watercanals (Baťa canal) and opportunities of active holidays (cyclo-routes around South Moravia and north-eastern Austria, horse riding etc.) Český Krumlov - so called "jewel of Southern Bohemia". This fairytale city has unique blend of historical centre (included on UNESCO heritage sites list), narrow medieval streets, opportunities of adventures around (rafting on Vltava river, hiking in the near-by Šumava mountains) and great services.

manufacturing. Plus, we are noticing a modest growth in the arrival of Indian tourists – to the tune of 30 percent in the recent year. The timing, therefore, I believe is apt for the re-introduction of a direct flight between the two countries. Over 12,000 Indian visitors are expected to visit the Czech Republic this year which has an annual arrival base of 8 million foreign tourists. Germany, the UK, France and the US are major source markets for the country with South Korea and China being the major contributors from Asia. Recently, a direct flight has also been introduced between the Czech capital Prague and Beijing to provide better accessibility. For Indian travellers, however, the best stopover options to reach out to Prague are presently provided by Turkish Airlines and Emirates. Our efforts will soon be set afoot to approach concerned authorities and the potential airlines which could initiate direct service but prior to that a critical assessment exercise will be undertaken. We are also part of Schengen countries and, therefore, many visitors might be coming on the common visa which works in the region. We are currently examining the volume of Indian visitors also visiting the Czech Republic on this common visa and then we will have the precise idea of the potential traffic. Festivals around the World

This July is going to be an exciting month for travellers who love to experience different festivals across the world. From Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival @ NYC to Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival (in Edirne, Turkey), here are some of the best festivals which a traveller must experience!

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival Location: New York City, United States Dates: July 13 - 16, 2016 The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival uses its home-field advantage to showcase the musical genre that has inspired the world. It is fundamentally an optimistic event: set along the river in view of the New York City skyline, it is a living example of how angst can be turned into art, how differences can be overcome with irresistible rhythms, and how people, denied resources and money, find currency in community, music, and street art. Wes Jackson, the founder of festival was inspired by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival , which celebrated not just the music, but the culture, food, and people of jazz. Thus, in 2005, he followed the Jazz Festival’s lead and started the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival.

Comic-Con International: San Diego Location: San Diego, California, United States Dates: July 21 - 24, 2016 Comic-Con International is a multi-genre entertainment and comic convention held in San Diego, California every year. This festival was founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans, which included Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger, and Mike Towry; later, it was called the "San Diego Comic Book Convention". Some may dismiss it as a geek fest, but the true fans know that it’s four days of fun when they can meet industry stars and play in a fantasy land, all in downtown San Diego. Over the years, Comic-Con has become the main event for comics’ conventions, including: comics creators; science fiction and fantasy authors; film and TV directors, producers and writers; and fans of all these popular arts genres.

San Fermín Festival Location: Pamplona, Spain Dates: July 6 - 14, 2016 The festival of San Fermín in the city of Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) is a deeply rooted celebration held annually from 12:00, 6 July, when the opening of the party is marked by setting off the pyrotechnic chupinazo, to midnight 14 July, with the singing of the Pobre de Mí. While its most famous event is the encierro, or the running of the bulls, which happens at 8:00 am from 6 July to 14 July, the week-long celebration involves many other traditional and folkloric events. It is known locally as Sanfermines and is held in honor of Saint Fermin, the co-patron of Navarre. It has become perhaps the most internationally renowned fiesta in Spain. Over 1,000,000 people come to participate in this festival. Three distinct events at the San Fermín festival have combined to become better known as the celebrated Running of the Bulls, an adrenaline junkie's highlight.

Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival Location: Edirne, Turkey Dates: July 18 - 24, 2016 Numerous wrestlers have converged on Edirne, Turkey for Kirkpinar, an oil-wrestling festival in which of all shapes and sizes, dressed in nothing but kisbet (traditional cowhide trousers) and doused in olive oil, battle it out one-on-one. The last man standing walks away with the Kirkpinar Golden Belt and the title of Chief Pehlivan. This weeklong festival, a UNESCO Intangible Heritage event, draws thousands of onlookers each year, and is said to be the longest-standing annual sporting event in the history of the world. It now holds a Guinness World Record for the longest running sports competition. Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival is an ancient festival celebrated since 1346. One can take a morning bus from Istanbul's Büyük Otogar (bus terminal) on the 2-1/2-hour run westward along the Otoyol (expressway) to Edirne. Buses depart for Edirne about every 15 or 20 minutes all day.

Calgary Stampede Location: Calgary, Canada Dates: July 8 - 17, 2016 - Jun 19, 2016 The Calgary Stampede is a western show unlike other, rodeo shows, encompassing parades, stage coach races, a fair and delicious pancakes. During this festival, White hats, big belt buckles and bull-riding sound is a common scene from the Wild West every July. The zest of this festival takes over the city with the world’s largest rodeo. A celebration of the western way of life, the Stampede puts together 10 days of parades, musical performances, rodeo events, food and more for what they call - ‘The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’. The rangeland derby pits chuck wagons against one another in what’s nicknamed the Half Mile From Hell.
