As a proud Indian and a travel aficionado, I have a role to play. When I travel abroad I consider it my job to promote my country to all potential visitors. I always suggest the destinations to visit, the hotels to book, the itineraries to experience and the hidden treasures to explore. Of course, I don’t mind these responsibilities. I want everyone to love my country or at least be intrigued enough to travel here and experience it firsthand. So, when the NDA government announced the launch of Incredible India’s new Avtaar, Incredible India 2.0, I was happy that visitors would have a reliable and engaging avenue to reflect on what is great about India as a tourism product. It is public knowledge globally that travel is a large aid to employment. By becoming a sizeable contributor
to a nation’s GDP and by expanding point of views the sector can become an agent of change not only for individuals but also for whole countries. Unfortunately, India currently attracts only a small percentage of the global foreign tourist arrivals. Hopefully, Incredible India 2.0 will give the Indian tourism sector the impetus it needs. In the meantime, we at Travel and Hospitality will continue to showcase and push travel products at home. To celebrate the revamp of Incredible India, flip to page 26 to unravel ‘Ten less explored destinations in India’. Don’t forget to get a peek at alluring Meghalaya on page 30. Also in this issue, read our Diplomat Corner (page 38) featuring the interview of His Excellency, Mr. Brian McElduff, Irish Ambassador to India, who speaks about the uniqueness and richness of Ireland as a tourist destination, and why increasing number of Indians are visiting the country and special coverage of SATTE 2017 (page 40). Do your part- explore India and spread the word!

Singapore passes a law on short term room rentals Hotel industry in India pitches for equality in regulations & taxes. The Parliament of Singapore passed a new law on 6th February making it illegal for home owners to rent out entire apartments and rooms for less than six months, unless they have permission from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to do so. This move is likely to affect private home owners renting their houses through hotel aggregators like AirBnb. The changes to the law come on the back of growing complaints regarding short-term rentals last year. The URA received 608 complaints in 2016, 61 per cent more than the 377 complaints in 2015. Besides Singapore some of the other countries that have regulations in place include France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and United States of America among others. Germany banned unlicensed rentals from May 1, 2016. Since then 40% of Berlin’s Airbnb listings disappeared. Amsterdam, meanwhile, has allocated $1.1 million to identify apartments that are being offered for short term rentals or don’t have landlords living in them. Barcelona has slapped Airbnb and Homestay $65,000 each for listing apartment without permit. These measures not only created a level playing field among all parties, but also netted revenues to the exchequer in the form of taxes. The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) has beseeched the Government of India to come up with a policy to cover the unregulated room rentals that have mushroomed across the nation – a policy that is fair to all players and one that will allow the tourism industry in India to take off in a big way. “We concede that homestays presently offer convenience to all parties concerned. But we have to view these things in perspective. The apart-

ments are currently cost effective to tourists only because they do not pay taxes or follow regulations that hotels need to. This gives them an unfair business advantage that goes against the concept of fair trade practices. The graver issue is that a lot of establishments are taking advantage of the ‘Bed & Breakfast Homestays’ and run fullfledged commercial establishments without any kind of regulations and taxes. While five star hotels pay a substantial 38 per cent of the room revenue as direct and indirect taxes, some of the lavish bungalows listed in hotel aggregator sites like AirBnB do not pay a single rupee as taxes. Further, over 42 licenses are needed to start and operate an organized sector hotel, while the unregulated sector operates without a single license. The regulations that the licensed establishments have to follow are vast and cover fire safety measures, food safety measure, hygiene parameters and many other compliances,” says Dilip Datwani, President, HRAWI. “We welcome competition in any and every form, but this kind of disparity is unhealthy for the industry. It is almost as
if we are doing our businesses with our hands tied.” “Disruptions are healthy, as it allows customers to enjoy best services at the cheapest rates. But the disruptors cannot be allowed to disrupt and proliferate simply on the basis of avoiding regulations and taxes. Today a hotel, let’s say charges Rs. 1500/- for a room, then it has to pay 10% as luxury tax beside other taxes, but a bungalow listed in Airbnb, for over Rs. 10,000/- a day, ends up paying nothing. If nothing else, this is a loss of revenue to the exchequer also,” he adds. HRAWI also questioned the relevance of subjecting hotels to administrative clearances, liquor permits and other licenses while these unorganized accommodations, providing the very same services are exempted. Homestays, functioning just like hotels do, are prevalent even today in a lot of States of India. The association also pointed out that hotels are required by law to send details of foreign guests to the police station by submission of a C Form. This is a security requirement from the Ministry by T NH DESK of Home Affairs.

Chief Executive of Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Lionel Yeo, said, “We are heartened by the strong tourism sector performance in 2016. Despite challenges such as weaker economic performance in some of Singapore’s top source markets and a Zika virus outbreak, Singa-
pore has managed to attract more quality visitors to contribute to economic growth.” Market Highlights By Tourism Receipts (YTD 3Q2016) From January to September 2016, there was good growth in tourism receipts across Singapore’s top ten source markets. For the second consecutive year, China (+41%) ranked top in tourism receipts, followed by India (+37%) and Indonesia (+14%). Tourism receipts from China increased mainly due to a volumedriven growth while Indonesia and India saw tourism receipts growing on the back of visitors spending more on shopping and accommodation.
With increasing numbers of Indian visitors, Ministry of Tourism Indonesia vowed to keep the momentum In order to keep up the momentum, the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia conducted a 2017 Sales Mission to India which were held in Mumbai and New Delhi from 10th to 13th of February, 2017. The World Tourism Organization has observed that India’s number of outbound tourists increased from 16.6 million in 2013 to 18.3 million in 2014 and it has predicted that thenumber will reach 30 million by 2018. This increase is aligned with India’s economic growth of 7.8% during the same period. For the last two years, there was a significant rise in the number of Indian tourists visiting Indonesia. In short, the Indian market is booming and therefore, a steadily incremental promotional effort is a logical step to keep up the growing trend. Thus, it is relevant that the Ministry has set a high target of 546,000 visits by the end of 2017, for the Indian market, i.e. an increase of 56% over last year’s target of 350,000. by T NH DESK

By International Visitor Arrivals (2016) For 2016, the top growth markets visitor arrivals in terms of absolute growth were China (+36%), Indonesia (+6%), and India (+8%). The growth was due to more visitor arrivals from Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities in China, India and Indonesia, where STB had intensified its marketing efforts. India also overtook Australia to become Singapore’s 4th largest source by T NH DESK market for visitor arrivals.

Incredible India 2.0, will it be a game- changer? The announcement of the launch of Incredible India 2.0 campaign by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his recent budget presentation and making budget allocation for it is a step in a right direction. To make the new campaign a great success, the government must adopt an inclusive approach.

While presenting the Union Budget 2017-18, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley underlined the importance of Tourism Industry, and recognizing the need to renew the country's tourism marketing efforts, he announced the launching of the second phase of Incredible India Campaign from FY 2017-18. The industry and experts have welcomed the move, who had been asking for this for a long time. The campaign will be run in international markets across the world with renewed approach and focus. According to Tourism Secretary Vinod Zuthsi, the campaign will also cover non-traditional markets such as China, East Asia and CIS countries. Although the MoT is yet to reveal the blueprint of the new campaign, the industry experts suggest that the campaign should be run through online and social media. They also think that the campaign should showcase all aspects of our tourism offerings rather than focusing only on heritage and culture. Welcoming the announcement of the new campaign, Karan Anand, Head-Relationships, Cox and Kings, "The government has maintained its strategic focus on tourism as it believes that this sector can contribute immensely

to employment generation and uniform development of the country. The budget announcement was a step in that direction." As far as focus areas of this campaign are concerned, Anand said that the government needs to broad base Incredible India campaign. "It is no longer about releasing advertisements in international magazines or creating TVCs. Yes, this has to happen hand in hand with a concentrated online marketing campaign. The world has gone digital and we should monetise our resources by effectively engaging with potential tourists who shop around in search of destinations" . Anand added, "We need to showcase our composite offerings and this can also be supplemented by the state governments who have their own campaigns. We also need to engage with the younger audience. We should showcase our destination to this segment as they travel in large numbers." India accounts for less than one per cent in the global tourism market, whereas India has great potential to become a popular tourist destination due to its varied and rich cultural heritage. "We believe that the announcement of the launch of Incredible India 2.0 campaign is a positive step
to boost tourism and employment worldwide. The strategic vision for this campaign will create a momentum for both domestic and inbound tourism," said Andre Gomez, Head of Operations - India, Hilton. He added that the budget also focuses on building infrastructure with considerable investments in railways, roads and Tier 2 cities to boost regional connectivity and encourage tourists to visit more places within India. This kind of a vision and support by the government will definitely help in creating awareness and will help India gain a distinct competitive edge over other tourist destinations. Welcoming the announcement, Pradeep Kalra, Senior VP–Sales & Marketing, Sarovar Hotels said, "We are positive that the new initiatives will bring in bigger benefit to the industry. The campaign should lead to higher tourist interest and arrivals from overseas as well as wider movement of domestic tourists. It is expected to create larger demand and opportunity for the hospitality industry." Rishi Puri, Vice President, Lords Hotels & Resorts also welcomed the announcement of the launch of Incredible India 2.0 campaign in FY 2017-18. "It is a positive and proactive

step to promote tourism in the country. The FM’s announcement has only reinstated the Government's position towards tourism. A well-defined road map and a significantly higher allocation of budgets to this sector in this Financial Year are an indication that things may look up for the travel and hospitality sector too," said Puri. Gomez stated that the Budget for 201718 lays emphasis on a significant development in infrastructural reforms and a cleaner country. He added that there is a need for developing necessary infrastructure to promote India’s tourism and the success of the Swachh Bharat campaign will definitely make a notable difference. "It is also crucial to boost India as a lucrative MICE and wedding destination, espe-

cially from APAC countries. Another important aspect that would attract tourists is by creating experiences for them at the key tourist destinations and not just relying on the natural beauty of the place and letting them visit these places as sightseeing spots. This can be done by deploying adequate resources and setting up various activities like adventure sports, water sports, culinary experiences etc." According to Kalra, the campaign should showcase India as a multi-faceted tourist destination and highlight different hues within the country whether it’s the beaches, mountains, exotic culture or India being the destination for yoga. The world class hospitality that India has to offer can also add towards bringing in greater tourist interests. India is a diverse country and offers various destinations for tourists to visit, ranging from the Great Himalayan Range to the ancient monuments and temples and then the southern coast with beautiful beaches, says Gomez, adding, "Since the country has so much to offer, marketing India as a tourist destination is extremely challenging as the tourists are unable to cover the entire country in one visit. With this great
initiative of the Incredible India campaign 2.0 by the government, many challenges in marketing the country will be resolved." He added that the initiatives taken by the government to ensure safety of women and the Swachh Bharat campaign are further a step in this direction. Some of India's states have done exceptionally well in promoting their tourism while others are far behind. "If the Centre leverages everything into one package, it will bring a multiplier effect to the tourism promotion of brand India. However, a budget of just 300 Crores for a worldwide campaign needs to go up significantly. Other than this to attract more tourists, the campaign could be more personal like the one Rajasthan created with 'Jaane kya dikh jaaye' campaign," said Puri. "While promoting tourism to increase the Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs), the Incredible Indian 2.0 marketing campaign could be strategically designed to promote domestic tourism. It could also align or integrate with individual State’s campaigns which would create a better impact." Puri further said that new projects in hospitality especially in the smaller towns and in tier 2 cities may benefit from this campaign. This is because the Government will be focusing on developing transport infrastructure in these cities and towns. "With better connectivity, accessibility increases and there are so many unexplored or underrated places in India which would easily increase the tourist footfall. This translates to business opportunities for tour and travel operators and eventually the hotel industry. Also, individual States that are inviting businesses to set up shops there by promoting ease of doing business coupled with the Centre’s boost by means of sops to the sector would certainly prove beneficial to the hospitality industry." As per Kalara, multiplicity of taxes, lack of infrastructure, airports, roads, train connectivity etc. and India being a long haul destination for many countries are some of the disadvantages the country has to face.

Ten less explored destinations in India v B Neha Kirpal Y
Tired of visiting the same beaches, hill stations and historical cities? Want a fresh list of unique and exciting destinations in the country that you may not have even heard of before? So before you plan your next vacation, read this list! 1. Majuli, Assam: To being with, Majuli in the northeastern state of Assam, has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest river island in the world. It is also the country’s very first island district. Honestly, how many of us Indians even know that? Accessible by ferry from the city of Jorhat, it was formed due to course changes by the river Bhramaputra and its tributaries. Majuli has also been the cultural capital and the cradle of Assamese civilization for the past 500 years. Being a wetland, it is a hotspot for flora and fauna, harbouring many rare and endangered species of migratory and other birds. Though almost 100% pollution-free, the island is under threat due to the extensive soil erosion on its banks. Certainly one of India’s most unexplored places, Majuli is resplendent with several festivals throughout the year. 2. Ganpatipule beach, Maharashtra: Located in the Ratnagiri district on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, lies this hidden treasure. Ganpatipule’s untouched natural beauty is scenic and pristine as ever. The best part is that it has yet not become commercialized, and

there are just a few hotels that have opened up around the area. You could just lie back and drown yourself among the greens of the cliff on one side and the blues of the Arabian Sea on the other. However, if you’re looking for some entertainment options along the beach, you could indulge in some camel/horse rides and water sports. There is also a Ganpati temple located on the shore of this 6 kilometre long white sandy beach. While in Ganpatipule, you could also visit Prachin Konkan—a life-size museum depicting life of the Konkan region in the yesteryears. If visiting in the summer, don’t forget to relish some ‘hapus’—one of the best varieties of mangoes available here! 3. Patan, Gujarat: The former capital of Gujarat, Patan is an ancient fortified town that has recently been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Surrounded by huge walls and an old world charm, Patan makes for an offbeat destination to travel to as it is filled with forts, step wells, lakes and places of worship. The main tourist attraction here is the Rani ki vav, a excellent example of Gujarat’s subterranean architecture. The Rani ka pav festival takes place in the winter months of December or January every year. This charismatic town also has a bustling bazaar. Tucked away among the havelis, you will find traditional clay toys, cigarette makers, ancient libraries and the patola sari—one of the finest hand-woven silk saris with extremely delicate pat-
terns—a specialty of Patan. Patan also has more than 100 Jain temples worth exploring. 4. Andretta, Himachal Pradesh: If art and hills are your true calling, then head to Andretta—which is completely off the beaten track. A 20-minute drive from Palampur in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Andretta is a little known artists’ colony that was established in the 1920s when Norah Richards, an Irish theatre artiste and environmentalist shifted to this spellbinding region from Lahore. The fresh green landscape of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas serves as the breathtaking scenery of this charming little town—Himachal’s best kept secret—which almost reminds you of a captivating painting. While rhododendron shrubs, banana trees, blackberry bushes and bamboo thickets make up most of the flora here, about 550 different species of birds inhabit its skies. A hub for art lovers, this peaceful town has a number of tourist attractions, such as the Andretta Pottery and Craft Society, Norah Richard’s House, Norah Richard’s Centre for the Arts, and the Sir Sobha Singh Art Gallery. Reportedly, the legendary actor Prithviraj Kapoor was a frequent visitor of this quaint village. 5. Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh: Located in the crown of the north east, Ziro has been a favourite town for the World Heritage Site for a number of years now. One of the oldest towns of the state, this picturesque

valley boasts of mild and soothing climate throughout the year. The Ziro Music Festival is a big attraction here, with amazing music from across the country, cultural events and tons of outdoor activities. It’s easy to lose yourself in its miles of stunning lush greenery, numerous rivulets, dense forests, and rice fields. There is a hillock here known as Ziro Puto, where independent India’s first administrative centre was established. Three kilometers away from old Ziro lies Pine Grove, one of the most frequented destinations here. With plenty of walking and biking trails, you can also indulge in a visit to the unique Apatani villages to experience the tribe’s culture and way of life. The food is interesting and varied too—rats are a delicacy here! 6. Bekal Fort, Kerala: The largest fort in Kerala, the 300-year old Bekal Fort is located in the Kasaragod district of the state. Shaped like a giant keyhole, it is one of the best preserved forts of Kerala. In 1992, the government of India declared Bekal Fort as a special tourism area. Surrounded by the splendid Bekal Fort beach—one of the best maintained beaches in Kasaragod—it enjoys a superb view of the Arabian Sea from its tall observation towers (where huge cannons used to be placed a few centuries ago). With close proximity to backwaters, hill stations and water sports facilities, the area is a natural choice for several film shootings. 7. Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh: Located in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh in central
7 India, the Satpura National Park is positioned amid the Satpura range. This unspoiled wildlife habitat is one of India’s finest tiger reserves. Its striking terrain— consisting of rugged hills and mountains, sprawling meadows, sandstone peaks, narrow water-filled gorges, deep ravines, dense forests and delightful lakes, coves and bays—makes it truly one of its kind. A little visited park in the state, one of its distinguishing features is the ability to walk within its boundaries accompanied by local guides. Other activities at the park include canoe trips, camping, trekking, elephant safaris, boating and buffer drives. The wilderness, tranquility and mystery of this forest is a must-experience for every adventure lover! 8. Madhyamaheshwar, Uttarakhand: An unusual little holy town named after the sacred temple of Lord Shiva situated here, Madhyamaheshwar is mystically covered by the snow-capped Himalayas on one side and lush green alpine meadows on the other. One of the most revered Hindu shrines, the spiritual vibes of the evening aarti performed at the temple brings everyone together. Madhyamaheshwar can be reached by trekking 16 kilometres from Ransi village. Located in the Garhwal range, Madhyamaheshwar is blessed by the bounty of nature—shepherd huts, village houses and picturesque views complete this idyllic town. The accommodation options here are limited, and you will mostly find homestays at reasonable prices. The summer months from May to October are usually considered the best time to visit.

9. Salasar Balaji temple, Rajasthan: A place of religious importance for the devotees of Lord Hanuman, it is located on the Jaipur-Bikaner highway in Rajasthan’s Churu district. Here, Lord Hanuman is worshipped as a human face idol with a mustache and beard. Constructed in the 18th century, the temple attracts innumerable visitors throughout the year. The building is made of bricks, stone, cement, lime mortar and marble. The temple shrine and the sanctum sanctorum are decorated with floral patterns and other kinds of mosaic work in gold and silver. There is also a congested market area—filled with prasad and spice shops— around the temple. Other pilgrim centres located close by include Rani Sati temple and Khatushyamji. 10. Kabini Forest Reserve, Karnataka: This is one of the most amazing wildlife destinations of Karnataka, owing to its accessibility, lush green landscape surrounding a large lake, and spectacular sightings of elephants, tigers and birds. Situated on the banks of the Kabini river, it was once a private hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Mysore. The main activities here are the jungle safari and the elephant safari. A boat ride on the lake may get you to spot sambhars, cheetals and even crocodiles! The dam across the river is a special attraction here. Other options include nature walks, jungle trails, cycling and bonfires. The vicinity of the sanctuary is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS INTRODUCES THIRD DAILY FLIGHT TO BENGALURU Etihad Airways is launching a third daily flight on the Abu Dhabi – Bengaluru route, effective 26 March 2017. The triple daily schedule will provide greater choice to local passengers travelling between the two cities, and improved connectivity to destinations across the GCC, North America and Europe via the airline’s Abu Dhabi hub. The capacity increase underscores the airline’s commitment to offer guests more travel options between Abu Dhabi and key destinations across its network. With a new daily late night departure from Abu Dhabi, and early morning service from Bengaluru oper-
ated with a two-class Airbus 321, the schedule provides additional online connectivity to and from a number of destinations, including Doha, Jeddah, London, Dublin, New York and Dallas. Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways Chief Executive Officer, said, “Our expanded services between Abu Dhabi and Bengaluru are in line with Etihad Airways’ strategy to offer greater travel options when aircraft availability and market conditions permit. “The extra flights to Bengaluru will cater to the strong demand between both cities, and bring closer our global network to and from Bengaluru over our Abu Dhabi
hub.” Etihad Airways launched flights to Bengaluru, capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka, in January 2011 with four services a week, rising to daily two months later. It has steadily grown capacity with additional frequencies and aircraft upgrades to its current double daily operation. More than 700,000 guests have been flown on the route over the past six years. Partner carrier Jet Airways will codeshare on Etihad Airways’ enhanced Bengaluru services, and also offer connectivity from Bengaluru to destinations across India. by T NH DESK

A recent conclave hosted by ICC accentuates on the enormous potential of medical tourism in Destination East. Medical tourism is best referred to those patients coming from developed countries to the Third World countries for low-cost treatment that provides all kinds of facilities under one roof. The Eastern region of India has emerged as a popular medical tourist destination for patients visiting from the North-eastern region and from the Indian sub-continent like Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh as well. Aimed to highlight the potential of Destination East as a significant medical tourist destination in emerging times, Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) recently hosted a convention themed “Medical Tourism, Wellness and Global Healthcare” in Kolkata sometime on February 10. The conclave threw light on Kolkata and West Bengal as a promising medical tourism corridor, the road ahead and also made an attempt to understand the expectations and trials of medical tourists in the city. The three medical tourist destinations in Asia are Thailand, Singapore and India. Speaking on the medical tourism scenario in the country, J P Shaw, Regional Director, Indiatourism commented, “Wellness and global healthcare is medical tourism and has immense possibilities for wellness seekers. The Indian wellness industry is one of the fastest growing segments in the tourism industry. Chennai attracts the most number of global health tourists around 45 per cent. Ireland: a fascinating land of myths and legends capturing imagination of one and all Ireland is a fascinating country rich of picturesque landscapes, traditional culture, historical heritage, unspoiled green countryside and spectacular coastline. The country is a land of myths and legends and home to many alluring UNESCO world heritage sites. In an exclusive interview with TnH, His Excellency, Mr. Brian McElduff, Irish Ambassador to India talks about the uniqueness and richness of Ireland as a tourist destination, and why increasing number of Indians are visiting the country. He also explains Irish visa process. Excerpts:
v B Prem Kumar Y
Q
How would you describe Ireland as a tourist destination for Indi-
ans? Indians appreciate our unspoilt green countryside and dramatic coastline as well as our traditional culture, buzzing urban hubs and festivals. Ireland is a land of myths and legends, which captures the imagination of children and adults alike. The island is also home to several UNESCO world heritage sites such as the Cliffs of Moher, Brú na Bóinne and the Skellig Islands. In recent times, several well-known movies and television shows such as Star Wars and the Game of Thrones have been filmed in Ireland and have created a curiosity among Indian travellers to visit the places where they were filmed. The island has also been discovered by Bollywood - films such as ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ partly set in Dublin, have definitely helped boost our profile in India. Incidentally Dublin, which is my native city, is a place which should be on the itinerary of anyone with an interest in literature. James Joyce, Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw were just three of its great writers. While not a near destination, our historic connections make Ireland quite a familiar place for Indians. We speak English and also drive on the left,

which makes motoring holidays much less of a challenge! Indian visitors will be surprised at how many links we have. I am particularly fond of Ballynahinch Castle near the western coast, which is not only a charming place to stay (with a worldclass fishery) but also the former home of Ranji, “the Prince of Cricketers”. He lived

in Ballynahinch in the 1920s and the castle is filled with memorabilia from his time. Nowadays we have a large Indian community and Indian food is readily available although I would encourage Indian visitors to try Irish cuisine, especially seafood, and to enjoy our renowned pub culture (which we have managed to export worldwide). The Irish whiskey business is booming and Indian visitors will, I hope, be converted to the merits of Irish whiskey which is the original whiskey!
Brian McElduff Ambassador of the Republic of the Ireland to India
How are the Indian tourist arrivals to Ireland growing? Over the last five years, we have seen a year-on-year increase of over 25% in Indian visitor arrival numbers to the island of Ireland. Factors in our favour include increased access to Ireland, particularly the increased air services by Etihad and Emirates via the Middle East, as well as by the British Irish Visa Scheme, which makes it easier for tourists from India who are visiting Britain to also visit Ireland, without the cost or bother of applying for a separate visa. We believe that the number of Indian visitors to Ireland is only set to increase over the coming years.
Q
Kindly tell us about the Irish visa process. How simple is it? You will need a valid passport to enter the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Indian national visitors to Republic of Ireland require an Irish visa. Indian national visitors to Northern Ireland require a UK visa. The new British Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS) allows a short stay applicant from India to travel to and around

Diplomat Corner interVieW both the UK and Ireland with only one visa. Whether this visa is a UK visa or an Irish visa is dependent on the country you visit first. Republic of Ireland Visa Procedures Going to Ireland has never been easier. An online visa application facility for Ireland is available to Indian visitors. You can apply online in the visa section of the INIS (Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service) website. Applicants must then submit their passports and documentation to the VFS Visa Application Centres in 13 cities across India. Visas for Northern Ireland Indian visitors to Northern Ireland require a UK visa. Applicants must submit their passports and documentation to any VFS office in India to apply for their UK visa. How is the connectivity between these two countries? While there are no direct flights from India to the island of Ireland, connectivity to Dublin and Belfast from India is excellent with Europe, Great Britain and the Middle East being the main air access hubs. British Airways, Jet Airways, Virgin and Air India have direct flights to Great Britain from India. One-stop connections are also convenient to Dublin and are serviced by multiple European carriers such as Lufthansa, Swiss, Air France and KLM. Turkish Airlines has a daily connection with a stop-over at Istanbul, while

Emirates Airlines and Etihad Airways have double daily flights with stop-overs at Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively. Recently, Qatar Airways has also announced that it will offer daily non-stop flights between Doha and Dublin, commencing 12 June 2017. What is your plan and strategy to promote Ireland in India? In 2017 and beyond, our tourist agency Tourism Ireland will continue to raise awareness of the British Irish Visa Scheme, informing Indian travellers that they can now visit the UK and Ireland on a single visa. The products being promoted in 2017 include the Wild Atlantic Way, the Causeway Coastal Route, Star Wars and Game of Thrones destinations as well as events and festivals such as the St Patrick’s Festival. Our tourist agency will focus on tapping the Culturally Curious segment of Indian travellers. Tourism Ireland has been consistently working with the Indian travel trade through sales calls, online and offline training programmes and seminars. In 2017, they will conduct road shows in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. Their online training programme, Ireland Specialists, is constantly updated with new tourism products and offerings from Ireland.
Q
How affordable is Ireland for tourists? Ireland is comparable to any destination in Europe. There are budget accommodation options including a network of hostels and also luxury options including some very famous hotels such as impressive Ashford Castle (former home of the Guinness family of brewing fame) and the elegant Ballyfin House which has won many awards. Our huge range of restaurants include Michelin-starred destinations but many prefer to dine more affordably in the convivial atmosphere of one of our many pubs.
Q
Q
What is special about Ireland as a tourist destination? For being such a small country, Ireland has a remarkable presence in the world. This is partly due to our very extensive diaspora but we owe much to our appealing traditional culture and strong sense of history. Our unique identity can be witnessed everywhere in Ireland, in its buzzing cities – Dublin, Belfast and Galway – quirky towns and villages and friendly locals. We have managed to become a modern, prosperous and outward-looking country without losing those qualities which make us distinctive. Ireland will reward any traveller with an open and curious mind.

March 16-19, 2017 Location: Dublin, Ireland
Dublin St. Patrick's Festival March 17th (St. Patrick's Day) marks the day in circa 457 AD when Saint Patrick died and took his story to the grave. Since, the only known details of his life come from two handwritten letters sent by Patrick to himself. Old Irish folklore also says the Saint would use a three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity - the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. It is then unmistakable how his Irish legacy remains so strong to this day. Conceived of initially as a religious feast in the ninth century, St. Patrick’s Day took a thousand years to become an official holiday in 1901, with the first parade occurring in 1931. It wasn't until 1995 that it became a government-sponsored, four-day festival.
