The journey of Jet Airways seems to have taken a screeching halt. Just as we thought that the worst was over for Jet Airways after its founder Naresh Goyal resigned from the board and ceased to be the chairman and the consortium of banks led by State Bank of India (SBI) agreed in principle to bail out the airline by providing additional funding, the optimism was short-lived as the banks did not provide the necessary emergency funds in the absence of a detailed plan by the airline. Jet had to finally ground its flights on 17th April this year. Besides mismanagement on the part of its promoters, the plight of Jet Airways can be attributed to the prevailing ecosystem in which Indian airlines operate. While Jet Airways is an extreme example, very few airlines are making a profit in India. A high operating cost, cut-throat competition, restrictive and archaic regulatory regime, taxes on ATF and excessive airport charges hugely increase the operating cost of airlines. It is very unfortunate that in one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world, airlines are struggling to survive. Grounding of Jet could not have come at a worse time as it preceded summer holidays in India. Air-passengers are having to bear the brunt in terms of increased airfare during the peak summer holiday season. As everyone associated with India's aviation industry is wondering if Jet Airways will meet the

same fate as that of Kingfisher, we hope that Jet will restart its operations soon, albeit with a stronger promoter, which would be in the interest of everyone. For a detailed analysis of Jet Airways Crisis, read our cover story, 'Crash Landing of Jet Airways' on page 18. Further, don’t forget to read our 'Diplomat's Corner’ on page 38. This month we have featured an exclusive interview with the Ambassador of Vietnam to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, H.E. PHAM SANH CHAU. He describes Vietnam as a most favoured destination for international tourists, which offers everything a tourist expects from a beautiful destination. On a solemn note, terrorism continues to create havoc in the world. Just as the world had hardly recovered from shocks of the ruthless terror attacks in New Zealand last month, one of the worst terror attacks in recent years struck Sri Lanka, targeting churches and top-end hotels and killing at least 253 people including Indians and many other foreigners. Besides the irreparable loss of human lives, the attack has hit the nation's economy badly, especially the tourism sector. The Sri Lankan Government is ramping up efforts to revive tourism, but no doubt it will take time before it bounces back. One fallout of this attack is that the Government of Sri Lanka has scrapped its Visa-OnArrival policy that would adversely affect foreign tourists arrivals to the country. Join us as we pray for the beautiful island nation and mourn the loss of the lives lost in these inhumane and venomous attacks. Let’s all hope for a safer and more stable world!

ACCENTUATING ON ECO-TOURISM

The state once had a poor visibility in the global and domestic travel market but in emerging times, tourism is back on track. By Swaati Chaudhury

The land that has always harped on pilgrim tourism since ages has been Odisha or the bygone Kalinga. In today’s times, the state is doing its best to offer impetus to ecotourism; wildlife, tribal and Buddhist tourism since there are large tracts of forest land that remain unexplored in Western Odisha. The state has scores of tribal population and its tribal culture needs to be unravelled. The state with scores of age-old shrines is a favourite destination for pilgrims and apart from this; there are a number of Buddhist monuments. Western Odisha in particular, is a repository of natural resources and it is quite natural that the lesser-known tourist spots in this region are relatively unknown to many. With the Naveen Patnaik government completing five successful years in the state sometime in May this year, TnH takes a look into the kind of development the state has undergone in the realm of tourism and the areas that still remain neglected at large. Soubhagya Mohapatra, Executive Director, Mayfair Hotels and Resorts Limited commented, “Odisha has the best tourism potential in the country. Be it forest diversity, pilgrim resorts, long seashore, historical sites, heritage monuments, wildlife sanctuaries and tribal culture, the state boasts of a diverse range of tourism assets. Most of these verticals are less talked-about since they have not been

Naveen Patnaik (R) with Dalai Lama

promoted well. The state has, however, made rapid strides in sports tourism during the tenure of the Naveen Patnaik government and the capital city of Bhubaneswar has emerged into a hotbed of sports

tourism with the setting up of Kalinga Stadium, which is of global standards. The state prides itself in organizing global events like the Asian Athletic Championship, Men’s Hockey World Cup, Men’s Hockey World League, the reputed Football Super Cup and ISL matches. Sports, MICE and medical tourism have witnessed genuine development in the state and huge medical conventions are hosted offering a fillip to MICE tourism. The city has a potted history of its own and bears proximity with the ancient pilgrim resort of Puri and the Land of Black Pagoda that is none

other than the UNESCO World Heritage site of Konark.” The pilgrim town of Puri has always caught the devouts fancy. Mohapatra added that both Bhubaneswar and Puri have emerged as prominent wedding destinations. “Excellent communication facilities between Bhubaneswar and Puri and sound connectivity have made these two destinations highly popular. There is Gopalpur-onSea that has witnessed substantial improvement in tourism infrastructure and with the launch of Mayfair Palm Beach Resort; Gopalpur-on-sea has the potential to host destination weddings.” There are a number of areas in tourism that can be further developed. Mohapatra added, “The islands in Chilika Lake could be leased out for setting up hotels that can draw travellers during peak season. The wildlife reserves and sanctuaries should have resorts in its vicinity. It is essential that Buddhist circuits need to be developed with sound quality infrastructure at Buddhist sites including Udaygiri, Lalitagiri, Ratnagiri and Langudi. With a view to flaunt tribal lifestyle for tourists, model tribal hamlets need to be developed in places with a high density of tribal population.” The state has experienced a turnaround in tourist arrivals with the Annual IATO Convention held in Bhubaneswar in 2017. Gagan Sarangi, Chairman, Odisha Chapter, Indian Association of Tour Operators stated, “The abduction of an Italian tourist

by Maoist group back in 2014 had tarnished the reputation of the state as a prospective tourist destination. But things have changed now and tourist arrivals in the state have picked up since the past couple of years. There has also been steady development in the infrastructure of the state. With the inauguration of Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, the state has received global flight connectivity to South-East Asia. There are regular flights from Bhubaneswar to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur and plans are on the cards to begin flight services to Dubai and Sri Lanka.” Besides, Jharsuguda Airport launched under the aegis of UDAN scheme has been a huge success with better connectivity between

the eastern and western parts of the state. Odisha Tourism is looking ahead to go for aggressive promotion in South-East Asia. Sarangi said, “The state forest department has received a shot in the arm with the launch of eco-tourism projects in Bhittarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary and Satkosia Gorge. Another co-tourism project has taken off at Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in the vicinity of Hirakud Dam in 2017. The emphasis is on developing the art and craft hamlet of Rahurajpur near Puri. The unexplored destinations in western Odisha like Sambalpur and Bolangir need to be popualrized. Apart from these, safety of women travellers and cleanliness form the topmost priority of state tourism.”

TOURISM BEARS THE BRUNT OF TERRORISM IN SRI LANKA

The Government of Sri Lanka is stepping up efforts to revive tourism, however, its decision to rollback visa-on-arrival facility will further aggravate the plight of the Sri Lankan Tourism Industry. The recent terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka has once again shown that tourism is probably the first sector in the economy that is hit hard by any kind of terrorist incident. Many travel agents have reported cancellation of planned trips to Sri Lanka and a lesser number of queries for the Island nation post the unfortunate terror incidents. The Government of Sri Lanka has pulled back its Visa-On-Arrival facility creating more doubts among foreign tourists. In the last 10 years, the Island nation emerged as a popular tourist dedication in Asia, in the wake of the country's victory over LTTE in the prolonged civil war. Once the peace returned to the nation after 25 years of the civil war, tourists from across the world started thronging the country and tourism emerged as a key segment of the country's economy. But the last month's terror attacks on Easter Sunday at three churches and many luxury hotels, have badly hit the country's tourism industry. The terror attacks killed at least 253 people including foreigners, and injured many. Meanwhile, the Country's President Maithripala Sirisena held a meeting with a delegation of hoteliers, and assured them that his government would provide maximum financial relief to the hotel industry to revive it. The President announced that a Cabinet sub-committee will be set up to look into the problems and requirements of the Country's hotel industry. by TNH DESK

CRASH LANDING OF JET AIRWAYS

The grounding of indebted Jet Airways is a big setback to India's Civil Aviation Sector. Factors such as cut-throat competition in the market, the high price of ATF, excessive airport charges as well as the mismanagement on the part of the airline's promoters led to its grounding. By Prem Kumar

ust when people in India’s Travel & Tourism Industry and travellers thought that the worst was over for Jet Airways when a consortium of banks agreed in principle to bail out the airline with additional funds, aer its Founder Naresh Goyal resigned from the Board and

ceased to be the Chairman of the airline. But this optimism proved to be short-lived as the banks did not provide the emergency funds to Jet Airways to continue its operations, in the absence of a detailed revival plan by it. us, Jet was forced to halt all its operations and ground its fleet. Jet Airways suspended its

flight operations on 17th April this year due to its inability to meet its operating costs and pay for fuel and other critical services when its lenders, a consortium of banks, turned down the Airline's demand for emergency funding. Before being hit by its current crisis, Jet Airways was the secondlargest airline in India, operating

flights to 52 destinations. Founded in 1992, Jet Airways had started its operations in 1993 as an air taxi operator, became a

scheduled airline in 1995 and started flying overseas in 2004. Jet was India's largest airline in terms of market share in the short period of 2010-2012. e airline defaulted on its repayment to banks in February this year, plunging into a severe financial crisis. e consortium of Banks, in the wake of the airline's grave financial crisis, asked the airline's founder and chairman Naresh Goyal to resign from the Board, for the consortium to consider any fresh fundings to the airline, but even his resignation could not ensure immediate funds for the airline to continue its operations. As India's oldest private airline (aer the nationalisation of Air India in 1953) was grounded 'temporarily', passengers are having to bear the brunt in terms of increased airfare during the peak summer holiday season. Jet's crisis has also affected its 23,000 employees including its pilots, crew members and ground staff, many of them have already

joined rival airlines. At present, India has only two full-service carriers: Vistara (a joint venture of TATA Sons and Singapore Airlines) and debtridden Air India. In the domestic civil aviation market, full-service carriers today make little sense when the highest flying times are less than 3 hours, and the difference in airfares between LCC and FSC is very high. One wonders if Jet Airways will meet the same fate as that of Kingfisher airline which was grounded in 2010 and never flew again. Increasing supply, falling demands and high costs started taking tall on Jet's finances, whose loss and debt kept increasing. Finally, the airline defaulted in making repayment to the consortium of banks led by SBI, which refused to provide any temporary relief to the airline to continue its operations. In the past, Jet Airways benefited from being India's first private scheduled airline (post

economic liberalization) and the absence of competition in the country's civil aviation market. e airline also benefitted from the 5/20 rule for the domestic airlines to fly overseas. e rule was scrapped in 2016 aer the Government announced its new civil aviation policy. In recent years, Jet had to compete against many low-cost airlines and fullservice carriers like Vistatara, which seems to be operating more efficiently and providing better service. Jet also lagged behind in competition because customers found other airlines' services better. What also hastened Jet Airways' crisis is India's Insolvency & Bankruptcy Act and 12th February 2018 circular of RBI (now quashed by the Supreme Court), which directed banks to take defaulting companies to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for bankruptcy resolution if there is no immediate solution out of the court. Due to the grounding of Jet Airways, it is advantage other airlines, as of now. It is very unfortunate that in one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world, airlines are struggling to survive. Hardly any of Indian airlines are able to make a profit today. While the size of the market is growing fast, cut-throat competition among Indian airlines, high operating costs due to factors such as the high tax on

aviation turbine fuel (ATF), huge airport charges and archaic regulatory framework are making things tough for Indian domestic airlines to operate. In order to enhance their market share, airlines are having to operate a large fleet. eir large inventory forces them to sell seats at discounted rates because of the nature of the airline business. e high price of ATF is a major concern for Indian airlines, whose expenditure on ATF amounts about 40% of their total operating costs. ATF is the largest component of airlines'operating cost. Excessive tax on ATF erodes the profit of airlines. Another area of concern for airlines is very high airport charges in spite of the huge number of flyers. Although the Government has taken many steps in the last 2-3 years, like announcing new civil aviation policy in 2016, the launch of the UDAN scheme, allowing 100% FDI in the civil aviation sector but more policy measures are needed to end the current woes of airlines and tap the full potential of the Indian civil aviation market, considering that India is expected to become the world's third largest civil aviation market in the next 2-3 years. Rationalisation of taxes on ATF by bringing it under the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and reduction in airport charges will substantially decrease the operating cost of airlines.

KERALA TOURISM’S NEW CAMPAIGN FILM A HUGE SUCCESS ‘Human by Nature’ offers new perspective on Kerala’s touch of Human with Nature Kerala Tourism’s latest brand campaign, Human by Nature, which encapsulates the state’s spectacular charm in dramatic visuals and offers refreshing insights into the interconnectedness of its people and bountiful nature. It has received wide acclaim in international markets, firmly pushing post-floods Kerala back into the itinerary of global travellers. The three-minute destination campaign film, part of a marketing blitzkrieg to refurbish Kerala’s touristy appeal beyond the Indian shores, showcases the state’s signature assets, and celebrates local people as heroes. The film subtly depicts warm, authentic human stories that travellers rummage through this land for a liberating experience. The global brand campaign, which

was recently launched by Kerala Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran in New Delhi, packs soulstirring images of the state where life moves at a leisurely pace in tranquil environs, where culture flourishes in syncretic traditions, where tradition complements modernity in the context of everyday life, all strung together in a visual tapestry. Alongside, it offers a spectacular snapshot of the state – tranquil backwaters, beaches, houseboats, catamarans, Theyyam artistes, hill stations, exotic wildlife, magical festivals, and scrumptious cuisines, and there is a surreal feel to it that is both real and fantastical for tourists. In essence, Human by Nature presents Kerala as ‘the courtyard of the world’, where no one is an outsider, not even the traveller; where the land and the people create a fabric of tolerance and interconnectedness; where you speak with no words and listen from the

heart; where you can explore Magic in Everyday and Eternity in the Ordinary— all of which can make us human, all over again. Describing the latest campaign as a powerful multi-media outreach, Surendran said it would act as a trigger to put Kerala Tourism on a higher pedestal in a competitive global marketplace. “I am sure it will strike an emotive chord with travellers and position Kerala as an essential fixture on the international travel circuit. It will appeal to both high spenders and backpackers. Tourism is a major contributor to Kerala’s economy and a significant source of foreign exchange. The increase in footfalls can have transformative effect on the lives of our people,” he added. The film, which was shown as part of Kerala Tourism’s roadshow in the American cities of New Jersey, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles, drew an enthusiastic response. by T NH DESK

HOBOKEN: A SMALL BUT FASCINATING CITY IN NEW JERSEY By Pradeep Chamaria

W

henever we think of a vacation in the United States, the places which immediately come to our mind are the ones pushed through different travel websites and travel agents. Destinations like New York, Niagara Falls, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and so on are on our lists as a must-see. A typical tourist just indulges in visiting famous places, shows, shopping and entertainment centres in these places. Nobody, I mean, nobody cares to explore the small unknown towns and areas near these famous destinations. But for a traveller and an explorer like me, the not so famous and unknown places are a priority. In fact, these small places let you experience the true essence of the US. These places are true representations of the age-old American culture which evolved because of the migration of ethnic cultures from all around the world. During one of my recent visits, I decided to concentrate on such a less visited place near New York City, Hoboken, which is a

small city just across River Hudson in New Jersey. My first view of this town came through the early morning mist and a light drizzle. Just a 10-minute train ride from Manhattan, New York, Hoboken has the flavour of a small town. Though I already was overwhelmed by what New York City has offered me, the scenic beauty of

Hoboken left me staring at the houses on Washington Street, and fascinated. It had a very homely, open atmosphere, and a nice human scale. The best way to know this party town rich in bars and clubs is by foot; it’s just one square mile in area. Even though it’s small, its brownstones radiate a big city’s vibe of youthful energy replete with hip restaurants, cool bars and funky shops. Experiencing Hoboken is like experiencing a truly American experience. Many cultures from around the world have left an imprint, and they are still celebrated today. The town has welcomed the Dutch, the Germans, the Italians, the Hispanics, the Asian Indians and others whose traditions clearly show on the community here. Hoboken is architecturally populated with blocks of Victorian, brownstones, an exquisite railroad terminal, countless historic churches and smattering of mansions dating back to times when the town was a wealthy suburb. The town has the distinction of being the

site for the first brewery of America, founded in 1642. It still holds the distinction of appearing in the Guinness Book of Records for the maximum number of bars per sq. mile in the world. Over the years it has become a metaphor for rapid gentrification. Reality offices line Washington Street, the main thoroughfare in what has become a developer’s promised land. Hundreds of townhouses have been renovated, old railroads have become expensive condominiums, and old-time bakeries and markets selling

live chickens and rabbits now coexist somewhat uneasily with patisseries and shiny new restaurants. This also is the town where the legendary Frank Sinatra was born. Washington Street is the main street here, and upscale merchants and restaurants are sprinkled here amid discount stores and faded luncheonettes. The town’s gritty flavours are immortalized in Elia Kazan’s film, “On the Waterfront”. Hoboken can be reached by Path trains or New Jersey Transit from Manhattan.

DRIVEN BY TECHNOLOGY, INDIA'S TRAVEL INDUSTRY HAS COME A LONG WAY

By Rahul Chauhan

India, which has the second fastest growing economy in the world after China in terms of GDP, has become a popular business market for online tourism and travel. The country also having the third largest number of internet users after China and U.S, has started using online booking of travel plans more frequently due to its convenience. The etravel industry contributes to a majority of 88% growth of the Indian ecommerce industry. Until about two decades ago, a typical Indian traveller would primarily visit pilgrimage destinations, and the only sources for travel planning were references from friends and family, travel magazines

and travel agents. That has changed significantly now with a sharp rise in the growth of tourists. From 1997 to 2016, the number of domestic tourist visits grew by 10 times — from close to 160 million to 1,614 million, as per Market Research and Statistics by Ministry of Tourism. The statistics further reveal that foreign tourist arrivals also grew 5.5 million in 1997 to nearly 25 million in 2016. The one big change that has happened is that a majority of travel planning and booking now takes place online. The primary market drivers are the increased spending power of the people, growing internet and credit card penetration, governmental initia-

tive to spread tourism, emergence of new online segments and the much anticipated growth in civil aviation market. The major short term restraints in the upcoming trends are the low operating margins and the non-reliability of offline partners. Other factors that require attention are the limited penetration of the service to the urban areas, payment processing issues, cultural barriers and lack of customer willingness, poor industry practices and insufficient tech infrastructure. The Online Travel Market is estimated to garner $1,091 billion by 2022, registering a CAGR of 11.1% during the forecast period 2016-2022. Online travel providers aim to ease travel planning and bookings for travelers. The online travel market is driven by quick and convenient flight and hotel

bookings, rise in customers’ trust in online payment, and ability to compare various available travel options. Nowadays, market players are extensively offering travel services through mobile websites and apps, as it is one of the most preferred mediums of travel bookings, particularly among the young professionals Online travel portals successfully provide a 360 degree virtual tour apart from audio tours, photographs, video reviews and video blogs either put by regular travelers or by the travel agency itself. For those who have a penchant to experience the magic of sun, sea and sand and enjoy tropical landscape in the midst of traditional, rustic Malay ambience, there’s nothing better than Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa in Langkawi.

According to Kirin Pancha, Executive Assistant Manager, Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, “We have a long, white sandy beach stretching up to 1.2 km that forms

the USP of our property. Our traditional Malay wooden chalets are the highpoints of our hotel. We have a lot of master chef activities. ver heard of fine dining set up housed in a stunning fort on the banks of the river Ganges? Well, it may sound straight from any fiction but once you head to Raichak, around 52 km south of Kolkata, the adage- “Seeing is believing comes right. Sprawling over 100 acres of land area, Raichak on the Ganges- a flagship hospitality brand is an integrated, luxury destination comprising boutique resort, speciality food outlets and spa. The most intrinsic part of the resort is The Fort Raichak that has Reflections, the 22year-old all-day dining outlet. I was quite excited at the opportunity to visit the plush country resort and with heightened anticipation; I proceeded to the resort on the day before Holi and it was my premier venture to the property. No doubt, the spectacular property overlooking the Ganges is a welcome solace from the madding crowd of the metros and provides some soul-stirring views of the river. The entrance of Reflections is well-lit and the 98-seater multi-cuisine restaurant that began its journey way back in 1997 has its interiors imparting a Colonial outlook. In order to satiate my hunger pangs, I settled there to relish some yummy meal. The restaurant is into serving both Indian and Continental delicacies. I began the lunch with the appetizer- Parmesan Pudding served with roasted tomato basil soup. Non-vegetarians can take their pick from Sea Food Tiramisu. The food outlet has more number of vegetarian options and there are nine dishes in the main course. Before moving to the mains, I decided to savour some unusual kebabs on offer and I was offered a platter full

My taste buds were enamoured savouring Bhutte Da Kebab, a typical Punjabi delight and Peshawari Subz Ki Shami with a colourful salad. There was Bharme Aloo Pathohari that has potatoes stuffed with cottage cheese, vegetables, dried plums and pine nuts. Some of the other kebabs offered were Multani Paneer Tikki and Khile Phool Ka Kebab. I took time out to gorge on kebabs and was soaking in sights of the tranquil river Ganges that forms the highpoint of the food outlet. I soon moved on to the main course comprising spicy Vegetable Biryani that comes with yoghurt, Dum Aloo and Raita. There were a lot of options in the non-vegetarian section including Free Range Chicken and Hariyali Machhi Tikka that comprises mint and yoghurt with marinated chunks of Basa fish prepared in Tandoor based on Punjabi style of cooking. The fish chunks are put in skewers, grilled and displayed on the table. Sammya Majumder, Executive Chef, Raichak on the Ganges commented, “Some

Vietnam should be listed as a not-to-miss destination since it is home to an array of world heritages, relic sites, and natural beauty. Besides, we also aim to promote Vietnam as a destination for golfers and wedding organizers.

Q

What would be your advice for Indians planning to visit Vietnam? What are the attractions in your country you think Indians should visit? As I mentioned, our country is a tourist’s paradise and this paradise offers an array of options for Indians to do in Vietnam. Vietnam has many things to offer Indian tourists like the world’s best sandy beaches, an abundance of Indian culture reflected in their numerous temples and many Indian restaurants. Many must-see destinations should not be missed when traveling to Vietnam as Ha Long Bay, Trang An Site, Mekong Delta. And importantly, do not forget to shop in our huge shopping malls in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi Capital and try the delicious Pho and the steaming hot Vietnamese Coffee which we also serve at our canteen of the Embassy every Friday at lunch time. Before going to Vietnam you can explore Vietnamese authentic cuisine at Viet Nom Restaurant in Gurgaon.

Q

How is the visa process for Indians? It is simple. For Indian nationals to apply for our tourist visa, they simply need a passport and one photocopy of passport, one application form with a photograph attached the itinerary of flight and booking of the hotel. ey could submit for visa application at our Embassy at 20

Kautilya Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi or through Embassy’ s Website. For the normal process, the visa is granted aer three working days

Q

How is air-connectivity between the two countries? Both Vietnamese and Indian people would like to see non-stop flights between the two countries. It would be a pillar in ‘Act East Policy’ of India. Since I took charge here, I have tried my best to actualise the air connectivity and our efforts seem to be paying off. In the next few months Indigo plans to open direct flight Kolkata – Hanoi and New Delhi – Hanoi. I am also working for a good flight time slot for Vietjet so she can fly very soon too. Once we have direct air connectivity, tourism will explode.

Q

Finally, what do you like the most about India? India is treating me very well and beyond my expectations. I like the Indian hospitality and friendliness the most. I am also enjoying Indian cultural diversity and beautiful landscape. I have been to 15 States and Territories and will hopefully be able to travel to all 29 States and most of Territories of India. For me this is truly the land of miracles!
