Need to strengthen Indo-Greek ties

C

onnected since antiquity, India and Greece share warm and friendly relations at the political and diplomatic level. People-to-people connect and tourism is also growing steadily between the two Countries. Drawing inspiration from their age-old connect, steps are underway to deepen and diversify ties between the two. SRISHTI RAI Editor

A key member of EU, Greece offers myriad opportunities for Indian citizens, and it is time to write new chapters in Indo-Greek relations; to give more wings to the economic ties between the two nations. There is a need to intensify our efforts to deepen Indo-Greek economic ties. As the economy of Greece bounces back, the Country seeks investment from other nations and foreign nationals to further accelerate its growth. Sectors such as the hospitality industry as well as residential and commercial properties in Greece offer huge opportunities for High Net Worth Individuals (HNI) from abroad to invest in. Investment in real estate in Greece is considered one of the most profitable investment forms. Read our cover story 'Adding Value to Indo-Greek economic ties' (page18).

On the tourism front, as per a recent report by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), international arrivals in the Asia-Pacific destinations have continued to grow better than the global average, in 2017, reaching a record high of more than 646 million arrivals as compared to 2016. (page 14.) Thailand is renowned for being Asia's most popular golfing destination, where golf is being played since 1905. The country is a mustvisit for those who have a passion for this game. In recent years, the Kingdom has heavily invested in the promotion of golf and golf tourism. Our feature 'Amazing Thailand: A Golf Paradise' (page 28) highlights key reasons that make Thailand a great place to visit and play golf. In this issue, our Diplomat Corner (page 38) has featured the interview of Ambassador of Georgia to India, H.E. Mr Archil Dzuliashvili. The Republic of Georgia is an extraordinary tourism destination that offers so many extraordinary attractions to explore; a must-visit destination for Indians.

International arrivals into Asia Pacific continue to exceed the global average

Foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific destinations continued to grow better than the global average in 2017, reaching a record high of more than 646 million arrivals relative to 2016. According to the Annual Travel Monitor 2018 Final Edition (ATM) released by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) today, international visitor arrivals (IVAs) into 47 destinations in Asia Pacific covered in this report increased by 5.7 percent and added close to 35 million additional arrivals to the collective foreign inbound count into Asia Pacific in 2017. In percentage increase terms between 2016 and 2017, the Pacific had the strongest annual increase at 5.9% year-on-year, followed by the Americas at 5.8%, while Asia kept pace with the Asia Pacific average of 5.7%. By annual increase in the absolute volume of foreign arrivals however, these positions were reversed with Asia receiving close to 25 million additional foreign arrivals between 2016 and 2017, followed by the Americas with a gain of almost 8.6 million and the Pacific with around 1.4 million additional foreign arrivals received over that period. Within the Americas, Central America showed the strongest incremental increase in foreign arrivals between

2016 and 2017, capturing 50.5% of the 8.577 million increase into the Americas over that period. Across Asia it was Southeast and West Asia that each captured the largest proportion of additional foreign arrivals into Asia between 2016 and 2017. While in the Pacific, Oceania received more than half of the additional foreign arrivals into the region, followed by Polynesia. At the individual Asia Pacific destination level, top five destinations with the strongest annual percentage growth rates in 2017 are Vietnam (ranked 1st, growth: 30.5%), Turkey (ranked 2nd, growth: 27.8%), Nepal ( ranked 3rd, growth: 24.9 %), Colombia ( ranked 4th, growth: 24.7%) and Northern Marianas (ranked 5th, growth: 24.3%). All told more than 40% of the 47 destinations covered in this report had annual growth rates in excess of 10%; another 28% had annual growth rates in excess of five percent. Of the destinations covered in this report, more than a quarter had annual volume increases of more than

one million each, while close to 15% had between half a million and one million apiece. The strong collective performance of Asia Pacific destinations in 2017 appears to be continuing into 2018 as well. As Dr. Mario Hardy, the CEO of PATA pointed out, “Early results for 2018 show a collective annual increase in foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific destinations of 8.7%, adding more than 25 million additional arrivals to the total inbound count during the first periods of 2018 relative to the same period of last year.

Thirty-six Asia Pacific destinations had released yearto-date 2018 data on foreign arrivals at the time of preparing the Annual Tourism Monitor for 2018 and these are covered in some detail through the body of the report. The strongest early performances are seen in a number of destinations including Colombia, Turkey, Vietnam, Japan and Sri Lanka. Furthermore, one quarter of these destinations had already posted volume increases of more

than one million foreign arrivals in early 2018, relative to the same periods of 2017. Included amongst these are Turkey, Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, Japan and Vietnam. “In general terms, the volume of foreign arrivals into most Asia Pacific destinations now needs to be managed in terms of distribution across the destination, especially with growth rates remaining relatively high,” adds Dr. Hardy. “This includes shifting our focus from just the volume of arrivals to other performance metrics including length of stay and yield as primary indicators, along with developing a better and deeper understanding impacts of tourism on the environment and society at all levels, especially if we as a responsible economic sector wish to remain sustainable and therefore viable into the future.”

“It is not only the international travel flows that have an impact either. The domestic demand for new travel experiences is gathering momentum in many destinations as well, and when coupled with international visitor flows, that creates a very powerful dynamic. It is incumbent on us all to ensure that we can properly harness and manage that power or else risk losing those very attributes that drive visitor interest in the first place.”

India's fastest growing hotel management company, Clarks Inn Group of Hotels is all set to reach another milestone in its journey of 12 years. The company looks all set to achieve its overall target of 100 hotel portfolio, including both operational and under development, by the end of this year. Clarks Inn had launched its first property, Clarks Inn Pacific Mall, Ghaziabad, in 2006, and in the very first year of its operation, the property was a huge success. Since then there has been no looking back for the company. The first property still remains the flagship hotel of the group. Reflecting on the tremendous growth that the company has witnessed since its inception 12 years ago, Srivastava views the Clarks Inn’s story building up primarily in two stages. Starting from 2019, the next phase will be of three years, in which we aim to add 100 properties in our portfolio, thus having a portfolio of 200 properties by 2021." it was all about laying a solid foundation and letting the industry know of its intent and purpose. In the second phase, since 2013, the company has witnessed a period of rapid growth adding sometimes as many as 20 properties in a year. Speaking about the challenges of the initial years, Srivastava said,

"The first phase of our journey was somewhat challenging because when we entered the industry we had no prior experience of managing hotels and had no capital to invest. We entered the business and made a success out of it without making any initial capital investment." He added, "It was also the period of global financial crisis that had gripped the most parts of the world including the emerging markets like India and many national and international hotel brands had shelved their Indian expansion plans. Amid all these challenges, we established ourselves and expanded our footprint with sheer determination, discretion and perseverance." In the first phase, the group had opened 15-16 properties and built a strong culture of hotel management, whereas the second phase witnessed a transformational growth with the company adding 15-20 properties each year between 2013 and 2018. The second phase was also marked by increased standardization and improved compliance with SOPs. On the back of the strong foundation laid in the first phase and the second phase, Clarks Inn will embark on the next ambitious phase of its growth, with a resolve to grow at a much faster rate. "We will grow at a higher rate in the next phase as compared to our earlier phases. Starting from 2019, the next phase will be of three years, in which we aim to add 100 properties in our portfolio, thus having a portfolio of 200 properties by 2021. These would include 100 plus operational properties besides under-construction ones," said Srivastava. "We are ready for our next phase of the growth that would be

more transformative, he further said. Besides speedy growth, the next phase will also focus on the upgradation of the Clarks Inn brands. That process is already on, with new upcoming properties of the company being larger in size, having more spacious rooms equipped with modern features, and larger meeting and banqueting spaces. "Making a clear distinction from the last two phases, in the next phase, most of our upcoming properties will be bigger in size with upgraded amenities and services including facilities like spa, gym, swimming pool, etc.," said Srivastava. Upcoming properties of the group will be more equipped to cater to MICE and social segments with their enhanced meeting and banqueting facilities. "We see immense potential in MICE and social segments. To tap these segments in a big way, our new properties will have bigger meeting and banqueting space facilities. In 2019 we will come up with at least three convention centres in our hotels, the size of each convention centre will be 20 thousand sq. ft.," stated

Srivastava. Talking about the growth of its brand portfolio, Srivastava said, "When we founded our company in 2006 we had started with just one brand: Clarks Inn. Gradually as we grew, we recognized the need for more brands, therefore, we came up with new brands. We launched Clarks Inn Suite and later Clarks Exotica for big hotels. To meet the demand for five-star brands, we came up with Clarks Premium. We

SOPs Compliance A key feature of the Clarks Inn brand has been the emphasis on the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); especially in the last couple of years, the group has become very strict in enforcing its SOPs. The group has achieved more than 60 % compliance of its SOPs, which is a remarkable feat because while every hotel brand has its own set of SOPs, their implementation is lacklustre. "The compliance of the SOPs has made sure that our hotels always maintain a high standard of the guest services. Going ahead, we will continue to upgrade our SOPs and increase their compliance rate," said Srivastava. "We have come a long way from the time we had to plead for a property. Now we sign properties on our own terms without compromising with our brand standards and SOPs" he added.

have signed three hotels under Clarks Premier brand. Today we have five hotel brands. Besides, we also have Clarks Residency brand for service apartments. We will soon launch another brand, Clarks Heritage." Mainly a budget and mid-market hotel chain, the company in the next phase will also open five-star hotels. Going ahead, the group also plans to go global by opening properties abroad. Negations to open hotels in Sri Lanka, Nepal and a few other countries are already underway. Clarks Inn recently opened a representative office in the Netherlands to attract inbound business from Europe.

have been the highlights of your stay Q What in India? I have been in India for quite some time now, but however much time you spend here seems less. There is such a rich abundance of knowledge, culture and history that even a lifetime would fall short. I am thoroughly enjoying my time here and I look forward to immersing myself in the rich culture and heritage of India. I hope to travel the country as much as I can. So far, I have managed to visit Goa, Amritsar, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Kochi, not just for work, but to explore and enjoy the culture and environment of those locations as well. I hope to visit more places soon, and hopefully spend some more time here. India holds a special place in our hearts since we share a sacred connection. Some of the relics of our sacred Saint Queen Ketevan were interred in St. Augustine’s Church at Goa by Portuguese Monks. Her relics were discovered during a joint archaeological excavation in 2006 and are currently on display in Georgia. This year was especially significant, since it saw

We hope to have many such cultural interactions in the future. In fact, I am confident that the ties between our two friendly nations will continue to grow stronger, especially since our relations are historically founded on rich cultural exchanges.
