Let’s head to the exquisite ITC Grand Chola in the popular tourist city of Chennai, which is located in a state that is arguably the cultural core of India- Tamil Nadu! It's the 32nd IATO Annual Convention and all those who have their business interests in the Indian travel industry will be heading there for business networking and relationship building. The theme of this year’s convention is “Expectations & Reality: Bridging the Gap”. This topic is quite relevant for Indian tourism today. The Industry and the Government have high 'expectations' from the tourism sector in terms of tourist arrivals, but the 'reality' is that efforts to achieve a larger number of foreign tourist arrivals are insignificant. The fact is that the country needs to accelerate its work, especially on the marketing front, to attract a greater number of tourists. Consequently, it is the best time for IATO to discuss and find ways and means to bridge the gap between our ‘Expectations & Reality'. Ironically, the IATO convention and conventions in general have led me to deal with my own dilemma of expectation vs. reality. Year on year, a large number of my team members want to attend these conferences. As a business owner I can’t decide whether

my expectation in terms of gains from these conferences will be met. They can be expensive in terms of time and money and every budget manager is faced with the question of whether the attendance costs are justified. Let’s face it, most benefits from attending such events are hard to quantify. Nonetheless, it is important to understand their importance and the benefits of participation. For example, where else can you find so many industry contacts facing the same issues as your organization? Or where else can you sit in forums designed specifically to help your team members learn and discuss tools, technologies, and processes that can improve your business? After weighing the pros and cons of such meetings my advice would bedon’t be penny-wise pound-foolish and miss out on important trade conferences and conventions. It’s worth taking the pulse of the industry and it is the easiest way to connect with your fraternity. No surprise, the focus of this issue is the IATO convention so do read our cover story “Gearing up for bridging the gap” on page 20. Tamil Nadu is the destination for the convention and for the first time it will be showcasing its classical charm to all the trade fraternity. Read about its sacred temple towns, rich culture, and gracious people in our story ‘Tamil Nadu: an appealing land of culture, heritage and more’ on page 30. Finally, even if you cannot make it to the convention don’t miss out on vicariously checking into the luxurious ITC Grand Chola, Chennai on page 28. I sincerely hope you will enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed compiling it for you. Happy Reading.

WHY MUST YOU HIRE A GUIDE WHILE TRAVELLING ABROAD? After deciding to spend a holiday in a foreign destination, the first thing you do is apply for visa and other formalities. Next is packing and of course buying the destination guide book to know major attractions of the destination. Nowadays, technology is at its peak where you can download different apps on your device and virtually explore the destination. However, here are some reasons why there is a need of having local certified guide: HUMAN FACE OVER TECHNOLOGY First of all, it is very important that you hire a government certified guide to take you on the tour of the destination. Unlike technology like navigation apps or recorded information on headsets, you will get the information of particular attractions or places by a human face. He or she will introduce you with major attractions, museums and other places in your language with human touch. The information will not be recorded rather more detailed. In fact, you may ask as many questions to him or her regarding the place. AUTHENTIC INTRODUCTION WITH CULTURE The virtual apps just give you information about the culture of the place or the destination. But, the person guide will help you to get closer to the culture and gives you detailed information about everywhere you go. For instance, if you visit Sri Lanka, instead of reading books or taking maps, the local guide will introduce you to this beautiful country’s culture and traditions. TASTE THE AUTHENTIC FOOD With technical apps, you might get the list of top restaurants of the destination you visit. However, the guide will offer you more options and if you wish to taste the authentic food items of particular place, the guide will offer you more information of places to try local food. You can enjoy variety of delicious food items of different places. TRUE INTRODUCTION TO CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS Instead of a book, you can meet people with the help of guide. Also, it will help you to mingle with them and get to know their genuine custom and traditions. With the help of guide, the locals might involve you in their chores or customs on different occasions. In short, to make your travel or holiday at any destination, along with technology like travel apps, hiring a personal certified guide is very important. It makes your trip more productive and knowledgeable.

MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO VISIT IN

IRELAND Ireland is place where you can find a lot of landscapes to please your eyes! From acres of wild and windswept countryside to hair-raising coastal cliffs and cute-as-a-button villages that make up the country's scenery. There are mesmerizing UNESCO World Heritage sites to exceptional vistas that beg to be photographed in Ireland. TnH has listed some of the most beautiful places to visit while you visit Ireland.

v B Archana Sharma Y

Cliffs of Moher The mighty Cliffs of Moher of Ireland reign strong as one of the country's most visited natural attractions - soaring 214 meters over the Atlantic Ocean in western Ireland. These iconic cliffs run from near the village of Doolin for around 8 km

mountain range and the northern Maum Turk Mountains.

Ring of Kerry The Ring of Kerry is the most pretty tourist trail. It runs around 120 miles through some of most scenic landscapes of southwestern Ireland. The patchwork of lush green meadows, heather-topped mountains, glacial lakes and the Ring of Kerry includes few highlights such as the rugged Beara Peninsula and the Kerry Way – which is Ireland's longest and oldest walking route. Here, you can also stop off on route at the Killarney National park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage

can look out for Black Guillemots, Gannets, Razorbills, Cormorants, and Herring Gulls as you climb the hair-raisingly steep 600-step climb to view the monastic remains.

The Giant's Causeway The Giant's Causeway is the only UNESCO World Heritage-listed site in the Northern Ireland. It proof that Mother Nature provides the most dramatic tourist attractions at exotic places. This natural wonder is comprised of about 40,000 polygonal basalt rock columns that is formed by the ancient volcanic landscape and stretches along the coastline like a series of gigantic stepping stones. A Giants Causeway Day Trip from Belfast is one of the most popular excursions in the country, with visitors taking the unique opportunity to walk.

Aran Islands biosphere reserve and home to the 15th century Ross Castle as well as a herd of wild red deer.

Skellig Islands Ireland's splendid UNESCO World Heritage Skellig Islands make a worthy side trip from the popular Ring of Kerry tourist trail. These are a pair of small rocky mounds that rise up from the sea off the coast of Portmagee. Rather than the two islands - Skellig Michael and Little Skellig - home to a fascinating 6th-century monastic complex perched on the 230meter high cliff top, but they also host a remarkable array of birdlife. Bird lovers

Popular for the traditional knitted 'Aran sweaters' (sold all over the UK) and carfree roads, the Aran Islands are a place where you can experience a traditional Irish village. Here, various locals still speak Gaelic as their first language, reside in small farming communities and drive pony traps. However, the countryside is equally delightful - historic forts on cliff tops, sandy beaches and miles of rugged coastline. Glenveagh National Park, the Burren, Connemara National Park, Glendalough, and Cooley Peninsula are some of the other popular places to visit in Ireland.

How to Reach Ireland? By Air Ireland has five international airports at Dublin, Knock Airport, Shannon, Cork and Belfast, which serve a wide variety of European and Intercontinental routes with scheduled and chartered flights. Aer Lingus is the national airline although low cost airline, while Ryanair is the largest airline. Belavia, Etihad Airways and Emirates airlines fly to Ireland from other parts of the world. The busiest international air route in Europe is the route between London and Dublin. By Rail Ireland is connected by rail to Northern Ireland. There are regular trains between Dublin and Belfast. By Road Ireland is connected to Northern Ireland by road and the journey can be done by bus or car. Several coaches service the routes. You can either hire a chauffeurdriven car or rent one and drive the length and breadth of this breathtaking island yourself. Check if you are specially insured for Northern Ireland if you plan to drive there. By Sea The other way of getting to Ireland is by sea. Some Irish cities, including Dublin, are ports of call for passing ships, and ferries from Liverpool and other British ports make regular runs too. There are ferry services between Stranraer in Scotland and Liverpool to Belfast. Cork receives ferries from St. Malo, Cherbourg and Le Havre in France.

Latvia is a very beautiful country located in the Northern Europe. With around 50% of Latvia’s land covered in forest and over 500 km of coastline, visitors have ample opportunities to admire the local flora and fauna. A tapestry of sea, lakes and woods, Latvia is best described as vast unspoilt parkland with its cosmopolitan capital, Riga. The country might be small but the amount of personal space it provides is enormous. Latvia has been ranked as the 5th best place to travel in 2016 by ‘Lonely Planet’! ers, including opera singers and musicians. On the national stage, Latvia’s Song Festival takes place every five years (next event in 2018), bringing together thousands of singers and dancers from across the country. As an active member of the EU, UN, OECD and other international organizations, Latvia is fully integrated with Europe and the world. Most large countries have diplomatic representation in the country, with embassies or consulates located in the capital, Riga.

Q

Why do you think that Latvia is good destination for Indian visi-

tors? One’s destination is never a place but a new way of experiencing life. And I am sure that Latvia is not just good but a wonderful place for Indian visitors. Every human likes to listen to music. Particularly in Indian and Latvian cultures, music has always been a key aspect. Latvia is

DIpLomAT’s coRneR

country, which sings. The summer in Latvia is also a period of festivals and various other events. There is a city or town festival almost every weekend in one or another part of Latvia. Latvia is located in the temperate climate zone and therefore has four pronounced seasons. Visitors in Latvia can enjoy a real winter with subzero temperatures and snow, spring floods, warm summers, and colorful autumns. As Indian tourists in particular prefer travelling during the summer season, so they can use the opportunity to go on a tour of the Baltic Sea shoreline or have a holiday in the Latvian resort city of Jurmala, known for its white sandy beaches. Winters are also attractive time for Indian tourist to visit Latvia especially in Christmas and New Year. The feeling of a whole Riga fully covered in snow and the different decoration around the city will leave Indian tourist with expressions of different amazing thoughts. Blessed with hundreds of kilometers of white sandy coastline, countless rivers and lakes, Latvia has a breath-taking landscape that has preserved its natural beauty. This makes Latvia the perfect place for ecotourism and ethical travel. Then again younger generation will certainly enjoy Latvia’s vibrant nightlife. As in any industrialized nation, Latvia has all conveniences that tourists and families need. When it comes to Indian tourists’ requirements for accommodation, food services and even cultural programmes or leisure activities, Latvia has it all. Indian cuisine is available in various restaurants, including pure vegetarian food that is now very popular also among the local population. Latvia is a foodie haven with popular farmers’ markets and over 100 quality restaurants. While travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer, our guests also recognize that Latvia offers significant cost advantages to tourists. And last but not least, it is a very peaceful and secure

for family vacations.

Q

How simple is the visa process of Latvia for Indian travelers? How about the first time travelers? Since Latvia acceded to the Schengen Agreement in 2007, Latvia’s diplomatic and consular representations abroad issue uniform or Schengen visas valid in the territory of all Schengen countries. The service focuses on delivering visas within a short time (less than ten days calculated from the date the Embassy receives the application). In line with standard practices for travelers to Schengen area, all bona fide travelers are welcome and may stay in Latvia and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days during a six-month period.

Q

How does the Latvia’s visa service remain competitive? As of this year, in collaboration with VFS Global we are glad that Indian travelers can now submit their application at 14 visa centres located across all India. We are aware that most of Indian tourists decide on their destinations based on recommendations of local tour agents. The latter can rely on a direct contact with the Embassy. Representatives of larger groups attending conferences or medical tourists can also expect an individual meeting with the Consul in order to have pre-screening of necessary documents.

Q

What tips can you offer to Indian nationals applying for visas to Latvia? I would recommend planning your trip with an established travel agency in Latvia or India. Standard application process would include a clear travel itinerary with relevant hotel bookings and travel insurance. Timely application is also encouraged. After all, the advice by our tourism experts is that Latvia is "best enjoyed slowly".

Q

How important is the Indian outbound market for Latvia? How many Indian tourists visited Latvia last year? Indian outbound market is important for Latvia. Since the opening of the Embassy in New Delhi there has been a sharp rise of Indian tourists. The annual rise of tourists to Latvia from India has been approximately 100% since 2014. Similarly, the numbers of Indian students at Latvian Universities are increasing exponentially and, according to latest estimates, have crossed the symbolic mark of 1000. Hence, Latvia is welcoming a wide range of visitors from India. It is a known fact that Indian film industry has a strong influence for potential Indian travelers. The shoot of some part of the movie ‘Agent Vinod’ staring famous Bollywood couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor was in Latvia. Recently other Bollywood stars have enjoyed the hospitality of our culture and we would like to invite more Indian film producers to come to the beautiful Latvia. Latvia also considers MICE outbound tourism from India to be very important. Last year, Latvia as the Presiding country of the EU Council hosted over 200 hundred international meetings. All these facilities are still in place and ensure that Latvia has all the capacity to organize different types of conferences. Last year every fifth tourist visited Latvia specifically for business purposes. It is becoming a new destination for many Indian corporates who want to offer their delegates a truly refreshing experience. Latvia has one of the fastest telecommunications infrastructures in the world, providing companies seamless connection with customers and partners abroad. It is ranked 6th globally for average measured Internet connection speed. Moreover, World Bank’s report for this year ranks Latvia as 22nd out of 189 countries for the ease of doing business. Finally, I would like to draw attention

of your readers to the high quality of medical services that are characterised by a personal, committed, hospitable and benevolent attitude, as well as a customised approach to each patient. Diagnostic and treatment equipment in Latvian medical health care facilities fully meets the standards of the European Union. Every year thousands of people from Scandinavia, Russia, and Western Europe come to Latvia to regain their health and beauty.

Q

How is the air-connectivity between the two countries? Latvia is easily accessible for business and leisure travelers, conveniently located between Eastern and Western Europe. Riga International Airport is the largest airport in the Baltics, offering direct flights to over 80 destinations around the world, with low-fare carriers providing reasonable rates. Business travelers appreciate that the airport is just 20minute drive from the city centre. Indian travelers can easily have a breakfast in Delhi and then dinner at one of the restaurants in Riga on the same day. Convenient connection is offered by Finnair via Helsinki, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul or by Lufthans via Frankfurt.

Q

How will you describe the relationship between India and Latvia? This year we celebrate a quarter of a century since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Latvia and India. India has always had strong ties with the Baltic nations (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia). Most academicians, scholars, politicians, diplomats and citizens of both India and the Baltic nations recognize our shared Indo-European linguistic and cultural heritage. Although being thousands of kilometres apart, we have been historically linked by the ancient trade route called The Amber Way, where India was one of the destinations for the Baltic amber. As a second proud example stands out

38

TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY | SEPTEMBER 2016

the movement initiated by Mahatma Gandhi for nonviolent resistance, which guided India to independence, and inspired other movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Thus, The Baltic Way, when on 23 August 1989 nearly two million people joined hands forming a human chain from Tallinn through Riga to Vilnius, proved that faith in democratic ideas and love of freedom can together generate a spirit of unity. It led to the nonviolent renewal of independence of the Baltic States. Now we join hands with people of India to bring our relationship to the next level. Last year has been a very special for us - we have opened the Latvian Embassy in New Delhi. It serves as the contact point between the countries, our

people as well as our business communities which show increased interest in expanding cooperation. As most promising areas for the business cooperation Latvia considers transport and logistics, higher education, ICT, life sciences, food processing and, of course, tourism.

Q

What do you like the most about India? Having lived here for the last two years I am impressed by India’s contrasts and diversity, whether it is food, nature or people. This vibrant lifestyle is hard to be conceptualized or put into fixed categories. While traveling around and working in India, I constantly rediscover it as a place and as a state of mind.

DENMARK IS THE NEW DESTINATION FOR DISCERNING INDIAN TRAVELLERS Number of Indians visiting Denmark is rapidly increasing, and the Embassy of Denmark in New Delhi ensures that those who want to visit Denmark are issued visa on time. In an interview with TnH, His Excellency, PETER TAKSqEJENSEN, Ambassador of Denmark to India, speaks about the vast tourism potential of Denmark and the growing interest from Indians who want to visit Denmark.

v B Prem Kumar How will you describe Denmark as tourist Q destination for Indians? Y

Denmark is the new, happening place for Indians to visit. We have the most liveable cities and the happiest people in the world, a clean and green nation with a pleasant climate. We have modest winters, cool summers and a rich heritage. Here in India, you have very hot summer and humid monsoon, so Denmark is the ideal destination for Indians to escape during the hot summer and monsoon season. Denmark is a small country in the northern part of Europe. We are a bridge between the northern countries and continental Europe. As a country surrounded by the sea, we have many beautiful islands and beaches, which Indian tourists definitely would like. Just as the Danish nature, the Capital, Copenhagen is also a beautiful and the most vibrant city with a lot of interesting events for Indian tourists. As I mentioned, Denmark is the gateway to the North. Many Indians who go to Denmark may also like to visit the other Nordic countries. Denmark is a more than 1000 yearold kingdom with a rich cultural heritage, which is in some

40

TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY | SEPTEMBER 2016

DIpLomAT’s coRneR

way similar to India’s. For instance, we also have magnificent architecture from old days. Vikings emanated from Denmark, and spread to the other Nordic countries. Food is another reason to visit Denmark. Of late, Copenhagen is witnessing new trends in cuisines. Nordic cuisines in Copenhagen have become very popular. New Nordic restaurants are the latest trend. The new Nordic kitchen has gained international appeal around the world and today, the kitchen is highly praised internationally. The new Nordic kitchen is characterized by its uniquely Nordic identity among the world’s greatest cuisines and by its commitment to organic, sustainable and local products. Denmark has evolved both as an agricultural and a modern industrial country. Industry and Agriculture are the two big economic sectors in the Danish economy. In short, there are many reasons to visit Denmark such as history, culture, heritage, beaches, food, nightlife, etc. Denmark consists of many flourishing cities, which are definitely worth a visit

Q

How are the Indian tourist arrivals to Denmark growing? I came here last year, and have seen a huge increase in the number of visas being issued by us to Indians. Last year, there was a 30% increase in the number of visas issued by Denmark to Indians. This year in June itself number of visa issued to Indians increased by 57% as compared to June last year. This is not just because Denmark is a lovely place. Many Indians have visited Europe extensively and are now looking for experiences off the beaten track. Denmark has an abundance of those experiences in store for Indian travellers, from the biking culture in the cities, old and modern internationally acclaimed architecture, street food and meatpacking districts, swim-able harbours to our own surfer’s paradise, “Cold Hawaii”, in Northern Jutland. The significant growth in the number of issued visas is not only a sign of increasing tourism, but also that more and more Indians are coming to Denmark as business travellers. Many are going to Denmark on permanent visa to work there. In total, Denmark issued 28,000 visas to Indians last year, which is a huge number. We expect 30 to 35% increase in the number of visas to be issued to Indians this year. So, overall the number of Indian arrivals to Denmark is growing, and we expect more growth in future with Indians becoming more aware about the opportunities available in Denmark. Once again many Indians visiting Denmark use it as a gateway to the Nordic countries. Some Indians use Copen-

hagen to go for cruising in the Baltic Sea. Many use Denmark as hub to go to Iceland, which is also a beautiful country. We are working hard to be able to achieve our target that we have set for our visa section. As we see huge increase in visa applications, we are now hiring more people to process visa applications. We want to increase people–topeople relations between India and Denmark through promotion of tourism. We are working hard towards this end.

Q

Kindly tell us about Denmark’s visa process in India. How simple is it? Denmark is part of the Schengen visa arrangement, so we have to live up to their standards. We also request applicants to apply for visas as early as possible to provide us with sufficient time to process the application on time so no one has to cancel their visit to Denmark because of a delay in issuing the visa. India is a big country having the size of a subcontinent. Based on this, we are happy to get services of VFS Global to help us collect applications and required documents from various parts of the country. VFS Global verifies and transfers applications to our Embassy in New Delhi and once we process and issue visas, they also help us deliver visas to applicants. Our colleagues at the Embassy work overtime to make sure all those who want to visit Denmark and have applied for visa get it on time.

Q

How is the connectivity between these two countries? Currently, there is no direct flight between India and Denmark. At present, Indians have to go to Denmark through one of the many hubs. We are working hard to ensure that Air India starts direct flights between Copenhagen and New Delhi. I am confident that this will soon be a reality.

Q

What is your plans and strategy to promote Denmark in India? Together with the other Nordic countries, we do promotional activities every year in India to attract Indian tourists to the Scandinavia. I think there are good reasons to do such promotional activities, because Denmark or any other Nordic countries are not a top priority in the mind of many Indians. UK is well known among Indians because of its historical connection with India. In addition, Italy, France and Germany are also at the top of Indian’s mind. I think there is lack of awareness about tourism potential here. Therefore, we need to create awareness about Denmark as tourist destination. We have to inform people in India about the great tourism opportunities which the Nordic region offers. Historically, we are just as great as Southern Europe. Besides that, few countries have the kind of natural cleanness and freshness that we have in our country. I am sure that Indians will appreciate to see the Nordic life of Denmark, its culture and heritage. Copenhagen is also gateway to Greenland. Area wise, along with Greenland, Denmark is 12th largest country in the world. Greenland is a very cool and amazing place to visit in the summer. We are a small country, but we could have done more as far as promotional activities are concerned. I think India is changing fast. The country is growing to become a global economic power. India’s middle class is expanding fast. With people’s income increasing, a lot of people are travelling abroad. So, the growing Indian tourism market offers great opportunities to us and we will continue our efforts to increase awareness about Denmark in this market.

Q

How affordable is Denmark for tourists? You will find the cost of hotel accommodation same as in the southern Europe. However, restaurants could be a little more expensive. But, you will get a lot of value for money – as mentioned earlier, the food is of international top-quality. I will not claim that we are less expensive than southern Europe, but we offer maximum value for money and you will not mind spending a little extra considering the kind of experience we offer. As compared to the other Nordic countries we are certainly less expensive. Denmark is a popular and cheap destination because of its tax-free goods. Tourists from China, India and other countries do a lot of shopping in Denmark.

Q

What is extraordinary about Denmark as tourist destination? Denmark is a Nordic country. The climate here is very nice and cool. Our heritage is great. You can see historical heritage from

42

TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY | SEPTEMBER 2016

ancient Viking days to the present modern days. Our cities are very liveable, which must be explored and experienced. Other important thing is that all Danes speak English so it is very easy to communicate with service providers and local people. As Denmark is a small country, every place here is very close to each other which makes it very easy to explore many parts of the country and the diversity between cities and the vast countryside and coast lines. Finally, you have to visit Denmark to get to know our unique concept of “hygge” (best translated to cosiness) and enjoy the Danish charm, beauty, freshness and hospitality.

Q

Is there a need to expand visa infrastructure in India? We have good visa infrastructure here, and as I mentioned before, the number of visas being issued by us are growing immensely and we are taking note of this growth. This also increases the pressure on our people so we may need to raise our human resources. But as the situation is now we don’t see a need to expand our infrastructure. We are happy with our collaboration with VFS Global. As we go ahead and receive more and more applications, we will ensure more activity so that that everyone gets visa on time.

Q

What are reasons for Danes being the happiest people in the world? We have for several years in a row been recognized as the happiest people in the world. It has much to do with the way our society is organized. We have strong social security systems, stronger than any rich country of the world. We have free education and free healthcare for all. Unemployed people are provided unemployment allowances. Senior citizens receive enough pensions to live a happy life. We also have a very high level of trust in our society and that, together with our welfare system, make us the happiest people in the world.

Q

What are the cities you like in India? I have been travelling here a lot since I came to India. I had some apprehension upon arrival. I was worried about how to cope with the Indian climate, but so far, it is better than I expected. Delhi is a nice city, although there are issues of traffic and air pollution. In addition, I like Mumbai because of its seaside and beaches. Chennai is also a great city. Goa is also beautiful place. In fact, there are many places I like here in India.

This September brings wonderful festivals and art fairs for travellers around the world. From the great beer drinking festival (Oktoberfest in Germany) to the popular harvest festival Onam (in India), here are some of the best festivals / fairs which a traveller must witness!

Oktoberfest Location: Munich, Germany Dates: September 17 - October 3, 2016 Munich's largest and most traditional breweries, Oktoberfest is the largest beer fest in the world. Over six million people attend this jamboree every year; it has become a significant part of the Bavarian culture. Drinking beer by the liter, relish traditional Bavarian foods, listen to live brass bands playing traditional Bavarian music and enjoy yourself along with hundreds of people from all over the world. Oktoberfest began as a wedding for the Bavarian crown prince Ludwig to Princess Therese from Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810, and was attended by the local community. Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16-day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October, with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event.

Galungan Location: Ubud, Bali, Indonesia Dates: September 7 - 17, 2016 Galungan is the most important feast for Balinese Hindus; it celebrates the victory of good over evil while honoring the creator of the universe and the spirits of ancestors. The festival is a Balinese holiday and the last day of the celebration is Kuningan, when they return. The date of this festival is calculated according to the 210day Balinese calendar. Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremonies. The spirits of deceased relatives who have died and been cremated return to visit their former homes, and the current inhabitants have a responsibility to be hospitable through prayers and offerings. The most obvious sign of the celebrations are the penjor - bamboo poles with offerings suspended at the end.

Bestival Location: Isle of Wight, England Dates: September 8 - 11, 2016 Revelers catch ferries to England’s largest island in the English Channel to officially close out the UK summer festival season. Bestival pulls out all the stops by holding a Fancy Dress Parade each year (usually on Saturday). Costumes play a key role here: Catholic priests wear purple during the Lenten and Advent season to reflect a period of anticipation; rituals of penance or purity are signified by wearing white, and silly outfits are de rigeur for reinforcing the sense of fun. Bestival is a four-day music festival held at the Robin Hill country park on the Isle of Wight, England. It has been held annually in late summer since 2004. Bestival is often described as a "boutique festival" due to its non-corporate feel. It is also known for piloting odd and innovative ideas, including an inflatable church where people can get married.

‘Ground reality quite different from what the industry expects’ There is a disconnect between what is being portrayed and the real picture of the Inbound Tourism in the Country. In an interview with TnH, Rajeev Kohli, Senior Vice President, IATO & Chairman of IATO’s 32nd Convention, said that rosy picture of the country’s inbound tourism being portrayed in media is far from reality

Q

How relevant is the theme of IATO convention this year in the context of the current tourism scenario? The past few months have seen a tremendous amount of chatter at various platforms on the condition of the Indian tourism industry. Emotions have been varied, from bewilderment to anxiety, from optimism to despair. Our members and non-members alike are struggling at various fronts. Taking cue from what conversations have been going on, we thought that the most appropriate theme for this year’s convention would be: ‘Expectations and Reality: Bridging the Gap.’ Why? Because what we in the industry expect from our various influencers and decision makers of tourism policy seems to be quite far-off from what the reality is on the ground. Because what we as stakeholders are witnessing in our businesses on a daily basis is very different from what gets projected in the media. We have a few choices – sit, watch and continue to complain or actually stand up and collec-

members and the media. There is a sharing of knowledge and the first hand experience helps our members better understand the potential of the state. Tourism stakeholders in the state will also get the benefit to interact with potential clients from all over the country as well as to share their issues with our association. We expect Tamil Nadu to most certainly benefit from this event.

tively work on a plan to change our destiny and bring back the industry to the glory at which it once stood. What we do is up to us. Our willingness to work with our association in making a difference is the key.

Q

How is the organising committee working with the local chapter to ensure the huge success of the convention? IATO at its national level works with chapter leaders all the time in encouraging more participation from our members as well as sharing of thoughts and idea. Our convention is also where we have our annual meeting with our chapter leaders from around the country. It’s where we help formulate plans for the next year.

Q

How do you think that Tamil Nadu and the local IATO members will benefit from this convention? IATO’s mandate is to help increase business to the country and to destinations that have the potential to gain a larger share of inbound tourism. Tamil Nadu is one such state which we feel has had an incredible increase in hotel infrastructure but has not kept up with the trends in international tourist markets. When we take our annual convention to a destination, it exposes that city and state to our

Who will be the prominent dignitaries and speakers at the convention? Every speaker is an important speaker for us. We will have some great sessions on Human Resource management and Social Media marketing. We will also have the international management expert Prof Anand Kurian from Singapore speaking on the final day.

Q

What are the challenges that inbound tour operators are facing today? Unfortunately! We have nothing but challenges. Number of Tourist Arrivals has dropped. Nothing is being done to market the destination, which gets enormous bad media coverage that is not countered. Local governments provide no infrastructure support. Taxes remain higher as before. So at every corner our industry finds nothing but speed bumps in our journey to sell India. Smaller and medium players are being hurt very badly. Some are at crucial points of their survival. In an eco-system where the industry gets no support government whatsoever, I am proud of our members who still toil to ensure that the brand reputation of the country is kept high. We need that as our government doesn’t seem to care.

Q

What are your expectations from the upcoming inbound season? Still early to say, but expectations are not exciting. No one seems to be reporting strong numbers and that worries us. Stagnation hurts our sustainability.
