EDITOR’S NOTE To Monaco with Love Individually, we are one drop; Together, we are an ocean. When done right, a destination guide is an instant time capsule of the ‘here and now’ of a place. If a future alien race will want to understand life in Monaco in present times or future generations will want to get a taste of life in Monaco in the 2020s—we hope this issue of TnH Magazine would be a great resource. We have covered our favourite places to stay, eat and drink and of course, suggested the most fun things to do. We have also asked industry experts to graciously contribute itineraries that you can use when planning your next trip to the glamorous principality. Given how unpredictable life has been the past year, particularly with regards to travel, I do wonder which amongst the places highlighted in this issue will resonate with future generations. I also wonder if future generations will look back at the coming time as Monaco’s new prime. As the principality tries to renew itself after a year of disruption caused by COVID 19, where its going is yet to be written. Let’s hope it’s a period of growth and development and unprecedented prosperity!

Hotel De Paris Monte-Carlo

Hôtel Hermitage

Hotel De Paris Monte-Carlo Hotel De Paris is nothing short of a Monte- Carlo institution. It was opened in 1863 as part of the development of Monaco by the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) under the auspices of Charles III of Monaco and is among the principality’s most coveted hotels. Thanks to its palatial design & iconic status, the hotel has been featured in numerous films including James Bond films and Iron Man. Monte-Carlo Beach A landmark since the 1920s, this seaside hotel with its glamour and elegance has been the gold standard of Monaco accommodations for decades. Hôtel Hermitage Monaco may be a relaxed city of serene boulevards and tasteful architecture, but Hotel Hermitage takes this sophisticated air to another level. Tucked away behind Casino de Monte-Carlo, in the heart of Monaco, offering magnificent harbour and old town views and surrounded by designer shops, it is a perfect place to stay for fun and romance. The rooms are plush, well appointed and classically decorated, many with balconies or terraces. Its Michelin-starred restaurant the Vistamar and the amazing spa Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, just add to its glory.

Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo A piece of history, the Hotel Metropole was built in 1886 on land, which previously belonged to Pope Leon XIII. Soon after its opening, clientele from all over the world was won over by the unostentatious luxury of this “Belle Époque” style hotel. Even after centuries and several different owners, the Metropole is still full of character. Interior designer Jacques Garcia has designed the property by combining a mix of opulent styles: Renaissance, Egyptian and Napoleon. However, despite its grandeur, the hotel is anything but stuffy. Thanks to its comfortable rooms, Michelin star restaurants, poolside lounge (designed by Karl Lagerfeld himself) and state-of-the-art spa by Givenchy, it’s the perfect base for exploring Monaco.

25 Food Guide

Eat & Drink Located on the French Riviera and lapped by the Mediterranean Sea, pint sized Monaco manages to showcase all of Europe’s best bits: beauty, culture and exceptional cuisine. Top chefs and world-class creatives have curated a food and drink hub with an impeccable gastronomic reputation and we’ve gorged on delicacies and cocktails from a great many restaurants and bars, through out the microstate, to prepare our list of favorites.

Le Grill

Yoshi

Blue Bay Restaurant Upscale and elegant, this luxe restaurant is ideal for magical dates that stretch on for hours. A part of the Mote-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort, with peaceful panoramic views of the seaside, it serves up delicious Mediterranean and Caribbean inspired dishes that look more like art then food. Michelin Star- 1

Metropole Monte Carlo Restaurant Chef Christophe Cussac’s, two Michelin star restaurant does fine dining with panache. Innovative and exquisite are synonyms for the dishes here. Opt for the 10 coursedining menu if you are in the mood for a real experience. The dessert trolley is superlative. Michelin star - 2

Le-Grill

Elsa

Located on the scenic 8th floor of the Hotel De Paris Monte-Calro, Le- Grill is a day-tonight paradise. With a roof that opens up entirely and a magnificent panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea, you can soak up the sun while enjoying lunch and look up at a dreamy starry sky during dinner. As the name suggests, the cuisine features delicious high quality grilled meats and seafood.

Elsa is the first organic restaurant to receive the coveted Michelin star. The decor, which uses azure shades, creates an atmosphere that is warm and welcoming and evocative of the Mediterranean coastline. The €58 market menu is worth a try. Perfect for patrons who enjoy eating healthy. Michelin Star - 1

Michelin Star - 1

Le Vistamar

Yoshi

Le Vistamar literally means ‘ocean view’ and that is certainly what you get here. This all-day Riviera restaurant at the Hermitage works equally well as a lovely breakfast eatery as it does a fancy dinner spot. The ingredients are the stars of the food; the chef creates delicious gourmet dishes using organic and local ingredients including honey from the hotel own apiaries. The healthy and delicious fare ensures the restaurant is always full of the beautiful but understated (well, for Monaco) types.

Monaco meets Japan at Yoshi. It is the premier sushi location and has been consistently voted number one for Japanese cuisine in the area. The menu reads like a love letter to sushi lovers; nigiri and rolls are incredible. Expect refined flavours, the freshest ingredients and a welcoming and mod day-to-night atmosphere.

Micheline star - 1

Michelin Star - 1

Nobu

29

Louis XV The lavish Alan Duccase scores again! His culinary prowess is extra ordinary and with a fleet of restaurants, many with Michelin stars, under his direction it’s no surprise that Louis XV has a distinctly Michelin vibe. Located in the awe-inspiring Belle Époque dining room of Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, the French restaurant is widely considered the epitome of fine dining. The Baba au rhum de votre choix, crème mi-montée (a light cake soaked in rum syrup) is to die for. Michelin Star - 3

Nobu Although Nobu has delighted foodies globally for over two and a half decades, the restaurant continues to strive for culinary excellence. Chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa is renowned for his sophisticated menu of elevated Japanese fusion dishes and his plates of yakitori, salads, sushi rolls and his signature miso black cod are the perfect accompaniment to endless cups of sake.

Castelroc You think you know a restaurant with a great view? Think again. Perched on the famous Rocher de Monaco, ‘between the sky and the sea’, right alongside the palace, Castelroc deserves that you clear out space on your camera roll to capture it. As for the food, the restaurant serves enjoyable Monegasque cuisine, which is a must try since you are in Monaco after all. And when the food game is as strong as the ambience, what’s not to love?

Coya International chain Coya introduced vibrant experimental Peruvian food to the principality. The food is fresh and full of interesting and sharp flavors and the restaurant itself has a relaxed vibe. With sweeping views of the Mediterranean, Coya wins on food, atmosphere and cocktails.

Maya Jah If you end up missing home or if your appetite for Michelin stars and caviar begin to lessen, you can head to Maya Jah to enjoy some Indian cuisine. The restaurant serves a rainbow of dishes inspired by all corners of India, from tandoori snacks to traditional curries, you can enjoy a little taste of home here. Gaia Monte Carlo in the heart of Monaco, GAIA’s clean furnishings, floral decor and seductive aromas await your arrival. This refined taverna is every- inch the charmer and what’s more – we’d go as far as to say that it serves some of the most flavorful comfort food in the entire principality.

Marché de la Condamine The Monaco food experience cannot be complete without a visit to Marché de la Condamine market. It is an unpretentious market with a warm sunny feel where one can indulge in all sorts of eatable delights particularly the city’s local cuisine, prepared from the very fresh produce that is sold at the market too. Our favorite eateries at the market are:

1) Chez Roger You can say the most typical Monegasque dish is socca (approximately a chickpea pancake). And for the best socca in town, Chez Roger is THE place. It ‘s hard to find it; this little concession is half-hidden in a gloomy corner of Marché de la Condamine and to add to that Roger’s hours are inconsistent. But here it’s all about good, honest food and Chez Roger’s soccas are as wholesome as can be.

2)Truffle Bisrot Monaco Located deep inside La Condamine market, based primarily around the use of truffle, the pizza and the pasta at this joint is a must. All the dishes are generous in their use of truffle and the food is rich, warming and deeply satisfying, full of an intense yet not over powering truffle flavour. Remarkably, the cuisine at this humble food court stall is bound to appeal to you no matter if are young or old, lavish or modest - exactly what a good restaurant should do!

BARS

31

Le Bar Americain Taking pride of place at the Hotel de Paris Monte Carlo, Le Bar Americain with its opulent wood and leather interior feels like an exclusive 1920’s Parisian den. It’s a popular fixture on Monaco’s drinking scene, where patrons can choose from a menu of unique signature cocktails. The alfresco patio adds to its charm and is the perfect spot to enjoy the lovely breeze and take in views of Monaco’s magnificent Casino Square.

Lobby Bar @ Hotel Metropole Upon entering the venerable Hotel Metropole, one of the first things you’ll clock is the impressive Lobby Bar, which is located right opposite the entrance on the ground floor. Come here to have a good break; there is a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, even though the décor itself is markedly luxurious and aristocratic. Settle into one of the plushly upholstered chairs, before enjoying a energizing coffee or a classic cocktail. A great place to sit, read or meet friends, the Lobby Bar’s food is as delicious as its ambience.

Buddha Bar Part of the Buddha Bar franchise created by French-Romanian restaurateur Raymond Vișan, expect strong influences from the far-east, dramatic lighting and a large lord Buddha statue. The vibe is achingly cool and riveting and once you get seated the attentive staff and great menu will leave you in no doubt as to why this international chain has proven so popular.

The Prince’s Palace Located in Monaco-Ville, next to Monaco’s Old town, the Prince’s Palace is one of the major attractions in the Principality of Monaco. It was originally built as a fortress in 1215 but for years the palace serves as the home of the Grimaldi Family, the family the current monarch belongs to and is the official residence of Prince Albert II (the sovereign monarch). Luckily, the palace’s status as the private residence of the prince does not make it out of bounds for tourists. For a certain period of time in a year, visitors are welcomed inside the State Apartments to explore parts of the palace including the Palace Chapel, Herkules Gallery, the Mirror Gallery, the Red Room, the Throne Room, etc. Its hard not to get amazed by the beautiful art and opulent interiors of these impeccably decorated rooms.

Casino De Monte-Carlo If Monaco is a billionaires’ playground and the ultimate destination for the rich and the famous, then the tables at Casino de Monte Carlo are the game they most enjoy playing. But, how did Casino De Monte Carlo come about? Around the mid-19th century, the House of Grimaldi was facing a severe financial crisis. It is said that around this time Princess Caroline, the spouse of Prince Florestan came up with the idea of setting up a casino in order to save the House of Grimaldi from bankruptcy. Consequently, Casino de Monte Carlo was set up in 1863. It was a kind of gamble that paid off and how! Today Monte Carlo gambling and entertainment complex is one of the most quintessential parts of Monaco’s impressive landscapes and the interiors are adorned by magnificent marble pillars, gilded mirrors and massive chandeliers.

The Formula 1 Salle Garnier track / Grand Prix The principality is known for having the world’s most famous Formula 1 track, Circuit de Monaco, and also for being the host of one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world, the Grand Prix. The Grand Prix is held each year in the last weekend of May. It draws in Formula 1 and motor races lovers from all over the world including big names of the film and fashion worlds. During this time there is a display of extraordinary glitz and glamour in the streets and the evenings of the Grand Prix weekend further lift the boisterous air with big parties being held in nightclubs as a part of the celebration. Even if you don’t visit during Grand Prix , you can channel your inner Lewis Hamilton by renting a sports car and revving up the engine through the tunnel.

The Japanese Garden Located on the Avenue Princesse Grace, the most expensive street in the world, the Japanese Garden is an oasis of peace and tranquility. The garden was created in 1994 in accordance with Zen principles and has all the essential features of a Japanese garden such as a pond, islands, a waterfall, lanterns, bridges, a teahouse and a Zen garden. Most of the materials used to make the structures have been sourced from Japan to maintain the garden’s character. However, it also has Mediterranean plants like Pine, Olive, etc. The elegant composition of the lush green garden makes it equally ideal for posing for some Instagrammable pictures as well as for unwinding and soothing your mind.

Salle Garnier, also known as the Opera de Monte-Carlo, is another architectural jewel (pun-intended) of Monaco. Located alongside Casino de Monte Carlo in the same complex, its jewel-box interior is immensely ornate yet somehow it works and looks spectacular. The opera house is inspired by and modeled on its older, larger and renowned counterpartthe Palais Garnier of Paris. When in Monaco, do visit this magical Opera house, numerous international stars like Prince, Lionel Richie, Patti Smith, Peter Doherty, Lana del Rey, and Carla Bruni have performed here and if you are lucky you can catch one of the mesmerizing performances.

Musee Oceanographique De Monaco Musee Oceanographique De Monaco was inaugurated in 1910 by Prince Albert I, who ruled Monaco from 1899 to 1922 (until his death) and is celebrated for his pioneering works in oceanography. Perched stunningly at the edge of a cliff in Monaco-Ville, the museum displays a wide range of marine objects, such as model ships, sea animal skeletons, tools, weapons, etc. Among the many striking features of the museum is its cabinet of curiosities, which displays objects such as marine specimens, fossils, antique diving gear and so on.
