2019 Festival Launch
Vipertime
Wed 11 / 7.30pm / Lancaster Brewery Born out of the snake-pit of Leeds house parties and now released into the wild, Vipertime draw on the mesmeric forms and harmonies of 1970s ethno-jazz. Refracting this influence though post-punk, '60s garage, free jazz and afrobeat they create irrepressible improvised music for the dancefloor. Forming in early 2018 as a free improvising group, the band recorded the ‘All Our Heroes Are Dead’ EP which received widespread radio play.
Ben Powling tenor saxophone, flute Matías Reed bass guitar Charlie Grimwood drums, percussion Luke Reddin-Williams drums, percussion
With a permanent line up featuring members of Roller Trio, World Service Project and Wandering Monster their upcoming debut album finds Vipertime in sharp focus and with lethal intent. Unleashing pounding drums, skittering percussion, snarling bass and impassioned saxophone moving between driving riffs and agile improvisation.

Nishla Smith Quintet Nishla’s original songs have a delicate, quirky but deceptively simple air about them – she has a quietly commanding presence and a relaxed but assured delivery that wins over audiences instantly. Her often dreamy and melancholic aura is offset with her energetic and imaginative band of Manchester’s finest young contemporary improvisors. Formed out of a residency at the Sage Gateshead in 2018, the quintet has played Nishla’s lyrical, story driven tunes at Band on the Wall and the Vortex and knocked us out at last year’s programme launch. 8

SogoRock SogoRock (meaning ‘brother-inlaw’) is a genre and country crossing band from Leeds. Led by resident Hungarians Bela and ‘Laky Franz’ with their fellow LCoM alumni, they have created a genre-defying sound that resists classification. They blend elementsof jazz, fusion and funk but also rock, gospel and more. Key to their collective sound and vision is every band member bringing and infusing their own traditional homeland style into the heady brew.
freesetrio freesetrio are a heavy triphop darkjazz band whose compositions explore inner demons and truths using twisted layered lyrics, bending vocals and eerie harmony to create a dark beauty. freesetrio take the audience on a journey of selfreflection, down a rabbit hole into a tunnel and back out into the light, holding them in a mesmerising trance and enabling the release of suppressed emotions. Their combination of hypnotic drum patterns, bold sub-bass riffs, dark harmony and daring yet intricate vocals creates their bespoke sound.

Camilla George Plus support from Youth Orbit
Fri 13 / 7.30pm / Lancaster Brewery
With two critically acclaimed albums and a host of award nominations under her belt Camilla brings her hypnotic blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz to the Lancaster Jazz Festival. A Jazz Jamaica alumni, Camilla’s love of fusing African and Western Music to make her own unique style is a key reason why she is a firm fixture on the new London Jazz scene alongside peers such as Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings. Her music is politically minded and heavily linked with African history and slavery in particular. Her latest album looks at tales that slaves passed onto their children through generations and, whilst full of sorrow, is essentially a story of hope for black people and mankind that we can one day live together in harmony. Plus support from Youth Orbit. This collective of local, mostly school age, musicians offering their own unique take on where they find jazz. Rob Bentall Rob Bentall is a composer and performer working with electronic sound and live instruments. His works hybridise ambient, folk, and improvised music. Rob has studied the nyckelharpa, learning Swedish traditional tunes and techniques before deconstructing them and turning them into new, semiimprovised compositions. Vula Viel Sat 14 / 7.30pm / The Round, The Dukes Bex Burch gyil Ruth Goller bass Dave Smith drums Forward-thinking UK trio Vula Viel released their second album, ‘Do Not Be Afraid’ earlier in 2019, continuing their singular musical journey centred around the gyil (Ghanaian xylophone). The band’s set confidently weaves sparse polyrhythms and intricate rhythm structures around bandleader Bex Burch’s gyil lines and take the instrument’s sound into new territory. The gyil and occasional vocal textures are underpinned by the powerful and insistent bass of Ruth Goller (Acoustic Ladyland, Melt Yourself Down, Let Spin) and drummer Dave Smith, introducing a rough, post-punk edge to the band’s sound. Described as “Ghanaian minimalism”, with the unassuming ability to blur the lines between atmospheres – Vula Viel’s sound may nod to Steve Reichian jazz, but influences don’t stop there: one can hear echoes of Bill Laswell and the irresistible energy of Arthur Russell. We are very pleased to have this band performing in the intimacy of the Round at the Dukes, this will be one not to miss.

Vicente Magalhães Quartet
Sat 14 / 8pm / The Hall Vicente Magalhães writes music that pays tribute to his Portuguese nationality. Whether he does this by exploring certain indigenous rhythms and traditional chord progressions or by re-arranging and re-imagining old folk tunes the output is a singular one and very under explored. The end result is an intriguing and engaging set of modern jazz pieces that are deeply rooted in Portuguese history and culture. The resulting sound of the band is fresh and full of original ideas and the voice of Raquel Álvaro is really quite special.

Jacky’s family is from the Aire, Worth and Calder valleys in West Yorkshire, where the mills and wool industry articulate not only key experiences in the lives of his grandparents and parents, also the cultural experience of industrial northern towns. The project will produce a suite of music capturing the varying aspects of the Industrial Revolution. The suite will divide into five sections: The Weaving Shed; Wakes Weeks; War of Attrition; Decline of Industry; Rebirth and will feature a new sextet that Jacky is assembling especially for this project.

Arthur O’Hara Trio
Sun 15 / 3pm / The Storey Auditorium The trio was formed from a desire to start a creative project growing from strong musical connections built at music college. The deliberate decision to keep the trio chordless allows the band to explore the subsequent space and freedom created for the three instruments to speak to each other. This results in many opportunities for interaction during the set and a strong yet forever changing sense of narrative. The trio has a really contemporary sound, fusing jazz, funk and rock, and draws on musical influences such as Thundercat, Kneebody and Sons of Kemet.

Led Bib, known for their boundary stretching rock and jazz, that garnered them a Mercury Prize nomination and a fistful of prestigious awards, set off last year in the hull of a boat in east London, together with lyricists and songwriters to create a suite of songs. Emerging from their underwater session, elements of their groovy, heavy, improvised sound remained but they were now set against fragile vocals and poignant lyrics, taking them into a much gentler song world. The result of the session, is called 'It's Morning' and comes out in September. In the spirit of a classic LP it features two sections of music and at this concert the band will perform and expand upon the album. The music is very much a journey from start to finish and this will be fully reflected in the live show. Led Bib have been together for 15 years and have released nine albums to huge critical acclaim. This album promises to bring them to new heights with its mix of the classic 'Led Bib' sound and this new broadening into the world of songs.
