MISSION

The mission of LUSM is to improve the conditions of the South Memphis community by constructing and operating a neighborhood improvement office to implement ongoing community building activities. LUSM seeks to spread light throughout the community with past and present resident led initiatives that promote strong and healthy work ethic and community collectivism. The mission of Neighborhood News is to provide a positive media source to the South Memphis community. We seek to feature residents, spotlight businesses and serve as a helpful resource to all concerned South Memphis stakeholders. Neighborhood News is a vital component to help the organization meet its 2025 vision.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Summer Break: Take a Break From School, Not a Break From Learning Summer is an exciting time for everyone, especially the youth! Although school is not in session, we should encourage our children to never take a “break” from learning. Many of the youth will find themselves with more time on their hands than usual. It is our jobs to make sure they use this time wisely. Parents, teachers, and youth leaders are on the frontline in the battle against destructive forces. I know from personal experience, engaging in urban youth development can be tiresome. But we cannot grow weary in the fight. This edition is dedicated to ensuring parents are aware of the opportunities and options that are available (right here in this community) to keep the youth positively occupied this summer. Due to the consistent advances in technology, our children are inundated daily with information, messages, and themes that are not appropriate and/or productive to the development of positive morals and character. Between urban music, reality television, and social media--- it sometimes seems like the messages of sex, drugs, misogyny and materialism are prevailing. These are strong platforms, which is why we have to be just as diligent in our efforts to instill positive character traits in them. Many teenagers look forward to working summer jobs. Having a summer job can allow teens to earn money while building work ethic and other skills vital for employment. However, we cannot allow adolescents to be consumed with their “summer job”. Allow them to work, but please make sure they also attend some college preparation activities, perform community service, and attend development workshops. The job is for the moment and things that are most likely to be purchased with the earned income (clothes, cell phones, nights outs, etc.) will not last. Naturally, teenagers are more likely to seek after “things” they can purchase and use now, opposed to experiences and skills that lead to upward mobility. So it is up to us to teach our children to become producers and not producers just for the sake of consuming; but producers that are able to build, maintain and sustain greatness.

Cost: Free / Location Cane Creek Apartments /1528 Ragan St. Kingdom Kids camp is operated by Victory Ministries, an outreach ministry of Victory in Christ Christian Church on South Parkway In addition to Kingdom Kids summer camp, they operate Teen City ----a free after school tutoring program at Hamilton Middle. During spring break, they partnered with the W.I.N. program to take more than 50 high school seniors to Lincoln University in Missouri.
