Summertime.
It seems like it arrives and then is gone all too soon. The long days, the warm air, the outdoor activities and celebrations that abound all throughout town; these are the days when families and friends, young and old, come together to enjoy each other’s company and cherish the time spent together, at a slower pace, while taking in the beautiful Northwest. Picnics in the park, a day out on the water, hiking the local trails, shopping the local farmers markets and attending much-loved community events … the summer months are meant for making memories.
for our youth, while us parents still find ourselves trying to juggle our careers and spend more time with our families. Too bad there’s no summer break for the adults— and for those who do have time off in the summer to enjoy what’s most important, you are blessed. See the summer through the eyes of a child, and make the time to explore and get dirty. Splash in the water. Take a nap. Eat watermelon. Build a sandcastle or mud pie. Get messy. Ignore the laundry and the dishes. Skip making the beds. Family is forever. Make this summer one where family comes first.
As the kids are out of school enjoying the freedom of no schedules, a break from sports and extracurriculars, this is an exciting time

Over the years, since the inception of Astroturf in 1965, man has struggled to come to grips with the ultimate question: Is the grass “greener” when it’s artificial? Let’s dive into the pros and cons of going with synthetic grass versus genuine grass to answer this question. Artificial grass was first used in Major League Baseball in the Houston Astrodome in 1966, replacing the grass field used when the stadium first opened a year earlier. Artificial grass stands up to heavy use, thus the reason it’s used on many sports fields. It requires no irrigation or trimming. Domed, covered and partially covered stadiums may require artificial grass or turf because of the difficulty of getting grass enough sunlight to stay healthy. As for the pros of installing artificial grass for your front and backyard spaces, most people use artificial grass because it requires little to no maintenance. It also requires no irrigation, trimming or gaspowered lawn equipment, and with growing concerns about water conservation and healthrelated issues surrounding fertilizers and pesticides, artificial grass is increasingly becoming the first choice for homeowners. Dog owners can rejoice that synthetic turf is great at preventing even the most persistent puppies from digging, while being exceptionally stain and fade resistant. Not only does it stand up to pet abuse, but your lawn edges can stay crisp and look sharp over the years. Synthetic grasses come in different varieties of colors, lengths, densities and finishes, improving the aesthetics of your home while simultaneously upping your home’s curb appeal. Another key advantage of artificial turf is the longevity and durability of modern synthetic grasses. Until recent years, the warranty offered on most turf products only covered a few years. However, with the recent developments in the artificial grass industry, warranties for the longevity of some lawns can reach up to 25 years. 12

come to the artificial side With the longevity and reliability of artificial grass, this home-use lawn product can come with a high-priced barrier of entry. On average, a homeowner will spend between $6 to $12 per square foot, versus 40 cents per square foot for traditional sod. You will also need to add infill to ensure that individual grasses stay upright and do not get matted down. There are wide varieties of infills available including rubber, sand, Zeofill, Durafill, Envirofill and TCool Infill. The most widely used type of infill would be crumb rubber for most stadiums and sports arenas. Made from recycled tires, it provides good shock absorption qualities. The second most widely used infill is silica sand. Sand is the least expensive infill and tends to be cooler in direct sunlight while absorbing moisture and eliminating some odors naturally. Silica sand infill is easy to come by and spread, while like any day at the beach the silica sand can be jagged and painful to roll around on. It may also just hitch a ride to the bottom of your shoes and make its way into your home. Another popular infill that people use for their artificial turf is ZeoFill or ZeoLite Infill. This infill tends to be the least popular for its lightweight properties but most popular for eliminating pet waste smells. Zeolite is also very porous, which helps keep your turf cooler in direct sunlight when compared to most rubber and sand infill options. Regardless of which one you go with, they all have their pros and cons. If you have pets 14

or children, you will most likely want to get an infill that keeps your grass cool, orderly and odorless to help keep your artificial lawn pristine. While you may be conserving resources like water with an artificial lawn, synthetic grass will heat up exponentially in direct exposure to sunlight. While artificial grass is non-flammable, you don’t want it to be extremely hot to the touch. One solution to the problem is to use an infill designed to cool off your grass and make sure that it’s fine to walk on with your bare feet. Some infills (like the TCool Infill) are also designed with technology that captures water from

rainfall, dew, or irrigation and stores it for later use. As the sun’s radiation heats the turf, an infill can help release moisture, keeping the surface cool for up to four days from a single moisture event. While infill is a great way to keep your lawn looking its best, it needs to be replaced a few times throughout the life of the turf. The most infill can cost between $8 to $12 per bag, and one bag typically covers about 30 square feet. Replacing your infill can be done yourself, or you can use a service from a professional installer if time is more of an issue than money. When considering the cost versus time and convenience of an artificial lawn, it can be a great investment that will outlast a traditional (organic) lawn. The amount of time it takes to take care of the soil, plant seed, or install a traditional lawn will be saved. Though the initial cost of installation may be higher than anything else you’ll find on the market, the pros of low maintenance and longevity of your lawn make the pros of purchasing an artificial turf lawn far outweigh the negatives of purchasing and installing your lawn. With the onset of new and improved technologies, including processes to increase the clarity and vibrance of one’s artificial lawn, the grass might just be greener on the artificial side. Of course, you are free to make that judgment for yourself.

102 Years
of the Fair Boundary County Fair Takes Guests Around the World in FIVE Days b y TAYLO R S H I L L A M
F
air season is fast approaching in Bonners Ferry. The Boundary County Fair invites the community to travel Around the World in 5 Days this August, as it returns for its 102nd year!
The Boundary County Fair will be set up from August 9 through 13, bringing the family friendly fun it’s been known to offer for over a century. The fair’s timeline has expanded for 2022 and is set to begin a day early. “Normally, we begin on the Wednesday of fair week, but this year, we’ll start on a Tuesday,” explained Fair Administrator Jodi Stoddard. “This will allow more time for judging, and for all the fun activities we have planned throughout the week.” Stoddard shared this year’s theme, “Around the World in Five Days,” was selected by the fair board. Vendors, 4-H members, and other event participants are encouraged to decorate the barns and booths to highlight the global theme. “The vendors, barns and exhibits will feature a world-wide theme from the comfort of your own backyard fairgrounds,” fair organizers have announced, as they look forward to adding a “foreign flair” to the 2022 fair. “As always, the Boundary County Fair is free,” Stoddard emphasized. “That’s free parking, free entry, and free entertainment.” The fair has been a free event since its beginning in 1920. “We offer entertainment, games and contests that everyone will enjoy,” the Boundary County Fair promises. Every year, the fair offers visitors of all ages a selection of family friendly attractions and entertainment, including games, contests, and barns filled with country-grown livestock. Businesses throughout the community are also invited to decorate their windows along with the fair theme. Awards are provided to the best-decorated vendor booth, as well as the best business window, encouraging community-wide participation in the fun.

“As always, the Boundary County Fair is free. That’s free parking, free entry, and free entertainment.”
“Our fair T-shirt has been designed by local artist Amy Tye,” Stoddard shared. Tye won the 2022 T-shirt design contest, judged by the Fair Board in the spring. The commemorative shirts will be available for purchase at the fair office closer to the date of the event. “The Food Court will again be packed with the best food vendors our county has to offer,” Stoddard shared. She looks forward to the wide selection of food vendors that will include Two Tones, Jakes Landing, Selle Valley Creamery, Moyie Shriners, Gardner Grinds, Maria’s Hawaiian Snow and Just Donuts. This year’s entertainment will include daily magic shows, a “funny photo booth,” and a free concert on Saturday night. With a large-scale event like the Boundary County
Fair, support from the community is always greatly appreciated. “We are always looking for volunteers,” Stoddard shared. “Without our valued volunteers, there wouldn’t be a fair.” Volunteers can lend assistance with setting up the event, open class displays, judging fair entries, and more. “The fair is only possible because of volunteers,” their new website reads. “Did you know that for 11 months of the year, the fairgrounds are run by two part-time employees?” They also have the behind-the-scenes support of five fair board members and a “small army of volunteer superintendents and judges”—truly a small army to make a lot of magic for the local community. Extra help is needed as some steady volunteers begin to transition out of their work with the fair. july/august 2022 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL

With a large-scale event like the Boundary County Fair, support from the community is always greatly appreciated.
“We really need some of the younger community members to start volunteering, since many of our helpers who have been doing this for decades are retiring,” Stoddard encouraged. “It’s easy and fun, and we promise you will develop great new friendships in the process. Just pop in or call the office, and let’s find a fun place to put your skills to use.” Support in the form of donating time and talent (just a few hours a year makes all the difference), to donating a bench or a picnic table, is what has helped the Boundary County Fair run successfully for over a century. The fair’s online event schedule is regularly updated for events that are open to the public, and the Boundary County Fair has made it easier than ever to follow along with event updates and volunteer opportunities. With their newly created website, BoundaryCountyFairgrounds.com, and the existing Boundary County Fair Facebook page, fair administrators will continue to post the event schedule, copies of the Fair Book, and more updates as August 13 approaches. To enhance the fair experience, community members can pick up the Fair Book, which lists the events and entertainment lineup for the fair, along with coloring pages and activities for kids. Pick up your copy of the Fair Book at the fairgrounds office, and keep a look out for local businesses showing support in their “Around the World” theme displays as the Boundary County Fair approaches for another year of fun for the entire community! july/august 2022 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL

JANIS TUCKER

s a teacher of many disciplines, including health to sophomores, speech to juniors, and a few freshman/senior health classes mixed in for kicks, Janis Tucker finds joy in the many personalities and diverse set of motivations that her students present to her daily. And even though Janis’ students and the Boundary County School District faculty and staff are sad to see her retire, Tucker is leaving knowing that her efforts and teaching are worthwhile. “I love getting to know students on a personal level,” she said. “I love teaching them in class, but I also like to hear them talk about their passions or see them in their element outside of the classroom. Some of my students participate in sports, others in the band, choir or drama, while others I see out in the community working. When these conversations occur, the student’s eyes light up and they are so animated!” For Janis, rewarding experiences in teaching come in many ways. Whether it’s finding out the right lesson plan in a speech class from years ago paid off for a student in a job interview, or them telling her that they take a lot of enjoyment from her essay exams as opposed to other teachers' multiplechoice exams, students don’t recognize that these comments are some of Janis’ favorite

kind of compliments. And with a great deal of teaching experience, she certainly understands the hard and fast rules for teaching and the benefits from teaching. “Good teaching is like good parenting,” she affirmed. “Teachers and parents need to be firm, but fair. Teachers and parents need to set expectations, show by example, draw a line and set consequences, and follow through with them. Most of all, teachers, like parents, need to show love, respect, and give grace. I hope I’ve done all this for my three children I raised, but also for my students in the classroom.” If Janis’ dedication to her family, students and community wasn’t enough, it’s really about her dedication to people, getting to know and learn from them, no matter what age or status, and committing to serve while reaping the benefits of a servant’s heart. "Janis Tucker is an inspiration and a role model to not only students but also staff and the community,” said Boundary County School District Superintendent Jan Bayer. “For these reasons, I would like to highlight her for 20212022 Bonners Ferry Teacher of the Year. She [is retiring] with over 37 years of dedication to our district.”

Boundary Community Hospital is always working its hardest to keep up with the community’s growing—and ever-changing— needs. And Fry Healthcare Foundation is instrumental in raising funds to meet those needs.
“The endowment fund strives to support the purchase, renovation, expansion and operations of Boundary Community Hospital to ensure that every person in Boundary County has equal access to quality, compassionate and personalized health care right here,” says Danielle Larsson, community relations and marketing director for Boundary Community Hospital.
“BCH is having growing pains,” states Dennis Dinning, chief operations operator (COO). “We are expanding our services and care, but we are maxing out our facilities' capabilities. It is time that we look into how we can best expand to meet our growing community’s needs.”
BCH pays close attention to the results of Panhandle Health’s Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to make decisions based on what Boundary County’s needs are specifically. According to the 2018 CHNA, the top needs to be addressed in Boundary County are:

Giving to the Fry Foundation ensures the legacy of the person giving the gifts, which can be in their name or in memory of, according to Dennis. “FHF would encourage the community to give to the FHF because our vision is solely focused on improving and expanding care for our residents. When funds are donated to the FHF, they benefit our community directly. FHF has funded several projects like a van for our extended care residents, a state-of-the-art surgical table, and upgrades to our outpatient facility, but we want to use the Fund for the Future endowment fund for larger projects like expanding our facilities to care for more individuals right here at home or to add new service lines,” states Danielle. “The funds stay local helping to ensure we have a strong and growing hospital. Student-Athletes of the year by JOSHUA NISHIMOTO
MORGAN BURT
CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP: LESSONS FOR LIFE
N
othing can stop Morgan Burt from accomplishing her goals. Since middle school, Morgan has played at least three sports a year, sometimes even four. During her freshman year of high school, she suffered a nearly career-ending injury that has plagued her ever since. “I had a hip issue in my freshman year and have battled it throughout my school sports career,” Morgan said. “It was frustrating because the doctors couldn't really tell me what was wrong other than I had very loose ligaments and the only real fix was to stop being active or surgery with a long recovery time.” Stopping wasn’t an option. Morgan’s desire to play sports while taking care of her injury when it flares up proves her determination to compete in the sports she loves. As a student-athlete, Morgan doublelettered in track and softball her freshman year. She was named top scorer for soccer for her junior and senior years, was named IML All-League for soccer, qualified for
state track and field for three years, and placed on the podium each year. In the 2021-2022 season, Morgan placed first in 3A State Track and Field in the pole vault at 10 feet. She graduated in June (with a few college credits) and looking to continue her college career as a studentathlete, participating in the pole vault for Spokane Community College. “I plan to become a secondary education physical education and health teacher,” Morgan shared. “I also plan to coach boys’ basketball.” As a player with a desire to coach, Morgan has dedicated a great deal to paying attention to her own coaches with hopes of passing it on to the next generation of competitive student-athletes. “There are so many valuable lessons that I’ve learned in sports that I hope to remember and pass on when it’s my turn to coach others,” she said. “Playing sports is not always easy, but the reward of not giving up is a great aspect of life.”
BRAEDEN BLACKMORE
BASKETBALL STAR TURNED MULTI-DISCIPLINED STUDENT-ATHLETE
A
s a junior in high school, Braeden Blackmore played soccer, basketball and track. He was All-League for this year’s district Bonners Ferry champion basketball team and also district champion for the high jump. While Braeden’s successful foray into other sports has made him a more wellrounded student-athlete, he can’t help but lean on his first love, basketball, a sport he sees playing a major role in his future.
30
“I would like to play basketball in college,” he said. “Other than that, I’m not sure what I want to pursue in college.” Braeden likes to live in the moment, which leaves his future wide open for him to write his next chapter. With another year of high school on the horizon, Braeden has plenty of time to sharpen his skills and continue pushing for championship aspirations.

ELI RICHARDS
A BIG WRESTLER IN A SMALL WORLD
A
s a four-year varsity letterman student-athlete in both football and wrestling, a twoyear letterman in track and triple crown champion during his junior year, taking first at high school state, first in USA Idaho freestyle state and Greco state wrestling, Eli Richards is a formidable multi-disciplined student-athlete. “One of my biggest challenges in wrestling is having good wrestling partners at my weight to push me during practice,” Eli said. “I know how to push myself, but being pushed by another wrestler raises my game.” Raising his game is something that Eli wants more than anything, both on and off the field. “I recently signed a letter of intent with the University of Alberta,” he said. “I will be wrestling there in the fall and while earning my education.” While wrestling and gaining knowledge through education are important for Eli, he can’t help but focus on all of the great things that wrestling has brought to his life.
“Making friends from all over and being part of a huge wrestling family is something that I most love about wrestling,” he said. “I love that wrestling is small in people’s eyes around here, but on the other hand how popular the wrestling world is, once you get involved and are able to travel and experience such things as I have been able to do, and being part of a huge wrestling family is just amazing.” As a champion wrestler, Eli has learned many life lessons. Through his network of friends, family and coaches, these experiences have simultaneously cemented his legacy at Bonners Ferry and are paving the way for his future. “It’s hard to pick just one life lesson I've learned from just one coach or being involved in wrestling,” Eli said. “I’ve been coached by so many great coaches and helped by so many great people throughout my wrestling career. It takes more than just myself to succeed; it takes a village of coaches and great people to raise a state champion.''
BLAKE RICE
COWBOY RODEO STAR
A
s a junior (class of 2023), Blake Rice loves to play team sports and ride horses. He’s an Honor Roll student currently taking AP and college courses and has big plans for his future. “I would like to play college football,” Blake said, “or just attend college and earn a degree in an agricultural field.” Blake has played varsity football, baseball and basketball for Bonners Ferry High School. He’s been recognized as Intermountain All-League for both football and baseball for the last two years. And when he’s not playing team sports, he’s out roping cattle and riding horses.
32
“During the summer, I like to ride horses and compete in rodeos,” he said. “I compete in both calf roping and team roping.” While not completely sure what the future holds for him, Blake’s passion for team sports and the leadership skill he’s gained from those sports will carry him through to his next endeavor. “In my experience, the team comes first,” Blake said. “Especially in football, the team comes first, and the team is only as strong as the weakest player.”

The Mediterranean Diet E AT R I G H T, LIVE WELL
b y R AC H E L K E L LY

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022
S
ome of the oldest people in the world, with the highest quality of life, live in the Mediterranean. This could be in large part to their active lifestyle; the people of Greece and Italy walk and bike everywhere as well as spend a lot of time outdoors. This could be because of their deep connection to family; the people of the Mediterranean are interconnected to their family and friends and often live with several generations under one roof. It is also true that culturally, the people within the Mediterranean stick to rhythms that encourage them to connect to their greater community. However, their rich lifestyle of lifelong health is believed to be mostly attributed to their diet. The Mediterranean is known for its cultural roots that encourage high-quality foods, eating within season, eating locally according to what’s available, gardening, and responsibly caring for the animals and animal products that they consume. The Mediterranean diet is modeled after this way of living and encourages a healthy dietary pattern that is sustainable as a lifestyle. This means that diets such as the Mediterranean diet are more a way of life, versus a strict standard that forces weight loss; weight that once lost returns once you return to daily living. Research shows that the Mediterranean diet can lower chances for cardiovascular diseases, prevent certain types of cancer, and it can have a positive impact on mental health. If we are to assume that the people of the Mediterranean live a long life in part because of their diet, there is also the added benefit of living long. The goal of such a diet is not to look perfect but to live within the weight that is healthy for your body type. To help you to feel good, versus craft a body that is “presentable.” The goal here is long life, lived well, surrounded by those you love. In light of that, what is the Mediterranean diet? The Mediterranean diet is pretty straight forward, crafted around local Mediterranean cuisine. It emphasizes fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes; things like peas, lentils, all different types of dried beans, tomatoes, and leafy greens. It includes low or nonfat dairy products, fish, poultry, nontropical vegetable oils and nuts. So, palm oil and coconut oil are out, while peanut oil, avocado oil and olive oil are acceptable. Olive oil is especially encouraged as a source of healthy fats. Freshly pressed, olive oil is considered to be more of a condiment than an oil and has a variety of uses in all types of cuisine. As expected, this diet limits

eating within season sugary foods, highly processed foods, and foods high in sodium. Lightly processed foods, such as quality cheeses, are allowed. Foods that have a (relatively) ample amount of salt aren’t prohibited in any way, just foods that contain high levels of sodium. Foods that are high in sodium are generally preserved and highly processed; sodium becomes easier to avoid as long as highly processed foods are limited. The reason that the Mediterranean diet has been proven to work so well is because it mimics the natural flow of what our bodies derive from nature and suggests ingredients that have been proven to encourage healthy habits for generations. It is for this reason that there are other diets that also work in much the same way that the Mediterranean diet does. Diets such as the DASH diet are also considered to be healthy for lifelong use. DASH, or the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, is a diet that allows for more dairy and meat and doesn’t restrict healthy fats to ingestion of olive oil. True to its name, the DASH diet helps lower blood pressure by focusing on foods that are high in potassium, calcium and magnesium. This means that under the DASH diet one can eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, lentils, dairy and lean meats all in balance and moderation. 46
BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022
Diets such as Paleo, Keto, or Whole 30 are surprisingly not on this list. Not because they don’t yield results! The Keto Diet can be great for someone who is suffering from diabetes, and the Whole 30 diet can be great for helping someone overcome bad habitual eating. However, these diets are not considered heart healthy, nor are they approved for lifetime adherence. In any diet, the focus should always be on quality over quantity. Foods high in nutrition are the primary focus, versus foods that satisfy quickly but ultimately go unused by the body. That being said, our bodies need all kinds of foods, versus strict restrictions, to get the variety of nutrients that it needs for overall health. For instance, breads and pastas are widely eaten in sustainable diets because carbohydrates are good for quick bursts of energy. Carbohydrates are balanced in moderation by fresh and cooked fruits and vegetables, as are part of a meal. Eating well isn’t so much about focusing on eating one thing and not eating another, but eating everything all together. For instance, pasta is usually eaten with pasta sauce, which usually incorporates a variety of vegetables with a moderate amount of meat. Taken all together, a healthy diet focuses on the whole plate. In turn, from head to toe, the whole body is well fed.

The Heart of the Issue Navigating heart disease
b y DA N I E L L E L A RSS O N , B O U N D A R Y CO M M U N I TY H O S P I TA L
T
he human heart is an amazing organ that beats 2.5 billion times over the average lifetime, pumping 2,000 gallons of blood every day. Our hearts are fundamental to delivering nutrients, oxygen, hormones, and other essential cells throughout our bodies. Unfortunately, our hearts are not immune to bad diets, lack of exercise, and poor habits such as smoking. We must do our best to be proactive in caring for ourselves and our hearts. In 2018, the Panhandle Health District released a Community Health Assessment; it was discovered that heart disease was one of the top six issues affecting Boundary County. Boundary County is not alone in this issue; according to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Risk factors in your control include diet, tobacco and alcohol use, high cholesterol, obesity, uncontrolled diabetes and inactivity. In addition, risk factors out of your control, like age (55+ men, 65+ women) and family history of heart disease may also contribute. Heart disease is known as the silent killer because many people do not experience symptoms and are unaware that they have it until they have a cardiac episode like a heart attack. According to the Mayo Clinic, if symptoms are present, they are generally different for men and women. Men tend to experience chest pain, while women are more likely to experience chest discomfort (shortness of breath or tightness), nausea, and extreme fatigue. Other symptoms such as pain in the neck, jaw/ throat, upper abdomen, and back, numbness, weakness, or coldness in your extremities due to narrowing blood vessels may occur. If you are experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting, you should seek emergency medical care immediately. As we age, many people will be diagnosed with some form of cardiovascular disease. However, it is essential to note that we can make small lifestyle changes to significantly reduce our risks. A healthy lifestyle, with a balanced diet and physical activity, goes a long way to preventing cardiovascular disease. Lifestyle changes and medications can decrease heart-harming trends, like high blood pressure or high cholesterol, before they cause damage. Boundary Community Hospital offers various medications, services, and devices to help diagnose cardiovascular disorders and support the heart if damage occurs. If your heart health is of any concern consult with your primary care physician, they can refer you to BCH for any of our services: • Holter Monitor is a portable device that continuously records the rhythm of the heart, typically for one to 14 days. • A 30-day Monitor is a small portable device that records the heart's electrical activity for 30 days; it is used to diagnose various irregular heart rhythms and medical conditions. • Echocardiogram is a non-invasive ultrasound that assesses the structure of the heart. It helps your doctor diagnose heart conditions. The Fry Healthcare Foundation has received a grant through the Innovia Foundation to install AEDs (automated external defibrillators)

throughout Boundary County. AEDs are for those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs are easy-to-use medical devices that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. You should immediately request the assistance of medical professionals, but the average response time for first responders is eight to 12 minutes, and for each minute defibrillation is delayed, the odds of survival are reduced by 10 percent. Having access to an AED, and knowing how to use one, is critical.
“In the primary prevention of coronary heart disease, the modification of risk factors (such as diet, smoking, weight loss, diabetes control, dyslipidemia, and physical exercise) produce additive reductions in the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and total mortality. At BCH, we recognize that cardiovascular disease increases the likelihood of hospitalization and death in our community. We aim to expand our Cardiopulmonary Department with equipment to detect early coronary artery disease and support patients as they recover from cardiovascular disease-related hospitalizations. Our overarching goal is to promote the health of our community. Prevention is a logical step to fulfill this goal.” - Dr. Paul Diehl

Hydration is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and nothing quenches your thirst like a tall glass of water. Whether you prefer cold or room temperature, it’s up to you. But … sometimes water needs a little kick to make it a bit more exciting.
A CLEAN COMPLEXION What you put into your body directly affects your outward appearance. And there’s no exception when it comes to water. A hydrated body means hydrated skin, and the most noticeable is your face. Water intake plus a good diet and beauty regimen will ensure your face, and the rest of your skin, look their best.
grapefruit Consuming grapefruit not only is hydrating but increases energy levels, aids in skin rejuvenation, improves eyesight and metabolism, helps build stronger nails and better hair, and is beneficial in many additional ways.
HUNGER CONTROL
BRAIN POWER
Water is known to aid in weight control. Dehydration is all too common among Americans, often resulting in hunger pains when in fact the body is in need of water. Make it a habit to start your morning off with a fresh glass of water, making sure to drink several ounces every hour or so, and more an hour or two before a meal, to help curb your appetite.
orange Oranges are rich with water (a medium orange provides 4 ounces of water). They are high in vitamin C and supply nutrients such as potassium and folate; a great antioxidant and source of fiber, and helps in collagen production, boosts the immune system and aids in iron absorption.
The human brain relies on proper hydration in order to function optimally. Research shows that dehydration can affect one’s focus and impair short-term memory function and the recall of long-term memory. Our bodies are constantly losing water. So when you feel like your brain power is struggling, water should be your first go-to solution.
lime
Loaded with nutrients, limes are known to help boost immunity, aid in iron absorption and promote healthy skin, among others. This sour yet fresh fruit is a great addition to a variety of drinks, especially water.

I was recently invited on a Press Trip to experience the Viking Egdir, one of the company’s newest longships launched earlier this year, on the Rhine Getaway itinerary. The eight-day cruise began in Basel, Switzerland, with stops in France, Germany and The Netherlands along the Rhine River. Each day brought exciting new discoveries as the ship passed charming villages plucked right from a storybook, vineyards crawling up hillsides, Gothic cathedrals, and even Dutch windmills. The highlight of the trip was the 40-mile stretch of the Rhine River between Koblenz and Bingen, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Egdir cruised past more than 20 medieval castles dating back to 966 and the delightful small towns surrounding them. It was such a magical experience. Pro Tip: Book your airfare through Viking and pay the extra $100 to $150 for Viking Air Plus, which allows you more options in selecting your flights and seats. With the current pilot shortage and frequent airline delays, you will have peace of mind as Viking provides a 24-hour hotline to use during your journey. The representatives work with the airlines and Viking to get you to your cruise. On my trip they even delayed our departure so a guest could make the cruise. INFORMATION VikingRiverCruises.com

I truly enjoyed the culinary experiences on board the Viking Egdir. You have the option of dining in the Restaurant, the main dining venue, or the Aquavit Terrace that offers both indoor and outdoor seating depending on the weather. The same menu is offered at both locations. Each day there are classics that are always available, specials of the day and at dinner a regional menu based on where the ship is. Ingredients are locally sourced, and the chef accents meals from the onboard herb garden. I lost count of how many croissants I ate. Make sure to read the Viking Daily each day. The four-page newsletter has a detailed section of culinary information about the food specialties for your next destination. Viking provides so many opportunities to experience local favorites. I was able to enjoy a slice of Black Forest Cake at a restaurant in the Black Forest region. In the evenings there are optional excursions to local restaurants, pubs or wineries. I took a culinary walking tour of Strasbourg, France, and had the opportunity to eat and drink from local vendors and restaurants across the city. Onboard the ship, some of the cultural enrichment events were culinary with a food demonstration and the opportunity to taste a local delicacy.

My accommodation on the Viking Egdir was their Veranda Stateroom. One of the things I like about Viking is the brand consistency. Each Viking Longship is the same, so you know what to expect. I recommend the Veranda Stateroom, as it gives you extra space with the private veranda. The views are spectacular with a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door, versus one that pulls open, so you can enjoy fresh air in your cabin if you like. A nice feature is all the 110/220-volt outlets and USB ports. The Scandinavian design is thoughtfully engineered with plenty of storage space and a very comfortable bed with luxury linens. River cruising provides a more intimate experience with only 190 guests and 50 crew. You won’t find the spas and multiple dining options that are on ocean cruise ships, but I didn’t miss it. I enjoyed spending time on the sun deck with its 360-degree views of the Rhine River and a beautiful organic herb garden. There is plenty of comfortable seating in the lounge, which serves as the main common area as well as tucked around the ship. 62

The Egdir cruised past more than 20 medieval castles dating back to 966 and the delightful small towns surrounding them. It was such a magical experience.
DO
Viking provides one complimentary shore excursion for every port of call except for departure day. On arrival day there was an opportunity to take a Welcome Walk with a local guide through Basel. Each day the included excursion is either a bus tour or a walking tour. I was very impressed with the quality of the tours and the guides. Most days you can take the included tour in the morning and an optional one in the afternoon or evening. Guest services and the program director were flexible and able to arrange seats for a sold-out pub crawl when more guests wanted to go. Take advantage of the fact your ship docks right next to town. I was able to walk right off the ship and into Cologne, Germany, and a few other towns to explore. In Koblenz, Germany, I was able to enjoy a currywurst at a local imbiss (fast food hut) right next to the ship before walking over to catch the gondola high up a hill to the mighty fortress of Ehrenbreitstein. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. This was truly a memorable trip.
