ESSENTIALS This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Kevin Callos

FINANCIAL FOCUS CONVERSATION ABOUT FINANCES IS IMPORTANT FOR NEWLYWEDS JUNE IS A POPULAR MONTH for weddings. If you’re getting married soon, you no doubt have many exciting details to discuss with your spouse-to-be. But after you get back from the honeymoon, you’ll want to have another discussion — about your finances. It might not sound glamorous, but couples who quickly “get on the same page” regarding their financial situation are actually taking a step that can help them immensely as they build their lives together. As you start talking about your finances, be sure to cover these areas: • Separate or joint checking/savings accounts — Some couples create joint checking and savings accounts, others keep everything separate and still others find a middle ground — joint accounts along with smaller, separate accounts. There’s really no one “right” way for everyone, but whichever method you choose, make sure you’re both aware of where your money is, how it can be accessed, and by whom. • Debts — Both you and your spouse may be bringing in debts, such as student loans or credit cards, to the

marriage. You don’t necessarily have to do everything possible to get rid of these debts immediately, but you should set up reasonable payment plans that will allow you to lower your overall debt load so you can free up money to invest for the future. • Spending and saving — Newlyweds are often surprised to discover how different they are from each other in the area of spending versus saving. You don’t have to try to radically change each other, but you both need to be aware that your spending and saving decisions now have greater consequences than when you were both single. To illustrate: If one of you is more of a spender and is used to running up big credit card bills, these actions can clearly affect both of you. To avoid problems of this type, you will need to communicate clearly with each other.

WHAT’S YOUR INVESTMENT STYLE?

• Investment styles — Both you and your spouse will unquestionably need to invest if you are going to achieve your goals, such as a comfortable retirement. However, each of you may have a different investment style — for example, one of you might be an aggressive investor, willing to take more risk for the possibility of greater returns, while the other is more conservative, ready to accept lower returns in exchange for greater preservation of principal. To pursue your strategy for

To develop a retirement income strategy that works for you, call or visit today.

• Goals — It’s important for married couples to clearly establish their financial goals. Do you want to purchase a house? If so, when? If you’re going to have children, will you want to help them pay for college? When do each of you want to retire? And what sort of retirement lifestyle do you have in mind? By answering these and other key questions, you’ll be formulating a set of goals. And from there, you can devise a strategy for attaining these goals.

WHO WANTS BREAKFAST? SUPPORTING YOUNG AVIATORS

PHOTOS COURTESY EAA CHAPTER 757

The Huckleberry Fly-In Breakfasts are back! By Dustin Hoffman

WHO WANTS BREAKFAST? I’m not talking about sniffing exhaust from the car ahead of you in anticipation of some egg flavored pancake coupled with cardboard they-tell-me-it’s-sausage crammed between halves of a soggy english muffin. I’m talking about sitting around a table with family, friends and neighbors, eating sausage and eggs and huckleberry pancakes, sipping on coffee and orange juice. If you like the sound of that, Northern Air is the place to be! On the last Saturday of every month starting in May and running through September, Northern Air hosts a Fly-In Huckleberry Pancake Breakfast between 8am and 10:30am. Norther Air, the airport in Bonners Ferry, is the same company we featured in our article about missionary planes a few months back. These good people are helping to send planes, as well as pilots and mechanics

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

from their own workforce, into the field for missionary and aid work. I digress. Let’s get back to breakfast. Don’t let me lose you at “Fly-In.” The name is a bit misleading. Don’t have a plane? Don’t have a friend who has a plane? Have a friend with a plane but not sure you want to get in that plane with that friend? No problem. You can drive to the breakfast. Thoroughly confused? Dave Parker, owner of Norther Air, told me more people drive to the FlyIn Huckleberry Breakfast than those who fly. That makes me think some of you aviators are missing out on a perfectly good excuse to get in the air on a Saturday morning! Still, all are welcome. The Fly-In Huckleberry Breakfast was originally just that, a fly-in kind of shindig. It was a breakfast by pilots, for pilots, in support of young,

14

aspiring pilots. Northern Air and the local Experimental Aircraft Association (experimental aircraft – not as scary as it sounds) conceived the event to gather local pilots and raise money for the scholarship fund. Each year, young people ages 16 to 18 are encouraged to apply for ground school and flight training scholarships at Northern Air. These scholarships mean free training toward a pilot’s license for some aspiring young person in the community. That is where the proceeds of the breakfast go. So you see, the breakfast is for a good cause. As such, donations are requested. The Fly-In Huckleberry Breakfasts are growing, bringing positive attention to our local airport and aviation. Companies like Three Mile Store & Cafe, Safeway and Super 1 are sponsoring the meals. People are showing up in support. It is inspiring youth and strengthening community. Young aviation

enthusiasts are even handling most of the work related to the breakfasts! Don’t miss out! Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell the person next to you, the Fly-In Huckleberry Breakfast is the place to be from from 8am to 10:30am on the last Saturday of each month, May through September. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the scholoarship opportunities, you can find out more at www.757.eaachapter.org/scholarship.htm. Too young for the scholarship? Not sure how you’ll feel once you get in the air? Check out the Young Eagles Flight Program for a chance to experience flight and see your hometown from the air.

FITNESS, FRIENDSHIP AND FUN Boundary Community Hospital Health Fair 2016. By Teresa Pesce. Photos courtesy of the Boundary Community Hospital.

WHEN IS A GREAT TIME to visit a hospital? When it’s just for fun and information! And that’s what the Boundary Community Hospital 2016 Fun Run & Health Fair is all about, happening Saturday, May 14 from 9am to noon. “It’s a good time to explore all the things we offer to promote healthy living,” explains Lauren Kuczka of Marketing and Community Relations, “and it makes for a great family day, too.” This up-close look at the world of health support can also ease away the fear that sometimes surrounds the unknowns of the medical experience. It’s amazing how many activities and adventures Boundary Community Hospital packs into this half-day embrace of the community they care for. Have you ever wanted to see a helicopter up close? The Life Flight aeromedical service is flying in at 9:30am and taking off at 11:30am. Explore a fire truck. Take a tour of the impressive MRI mobile truck interior.

Bring the family bikes in for a check-up by Far North Outfitters in Bonners Ferry. Kids love navigating the Bike Rodeo in the Boundary Community Clinic’s parking lot course and learning safe riding tips. Plus, they receive free helmets while supplies last, thanks to the Gladys E. Lungroise Advised Fund, the Idaho Community Grant’s program that supplied the grant. Just for fitness and friendship, sign up for the Fun Run 3K, 5K or 10K. Pre-registration begins May 2 and entry forms are available on the hospital’s website: www.boundarycommunity hospital.org or in the Outpatient Clinic lobby. Be among the first 70 to register and you’ll receive a free event T-shirt! (They will be available for sale on race day.) Registration and check-in are at 7am and the race begins at 8am. When you finish the course, cool down with a stroll through the local vendors offering health-related products and services. Fairgoers can also pick up coupons for a free

Hemoglobin A1C test ($64 value) or a free Lipid Profile Testing coupon ($95 value). There is an on-site blood pressure check and Accucheck instant blood sugar test. Kids enjoy testing themselves on the therapy course in the Rehabilitation Department. “It’s a good time to check out the hospital’s convenient outpatient specialist clinics,” suggests Kuczka, “including our new April addition, the orthopedic clinic with Dr. Michael DiBenedetto.” There will be opportunities to learn more about the hospital, diagnostic testing available through the medical laboratory, as well as x-rays, mammograms, and computerized tomography (CT), nutrition services, infection control, and the award-winning Extended Care Facility. The Fair offers enjoyable ways to support Boundary Community Hospital. You can purchase tickets for numbered golf balls at The Fry Healthcare Foundation booth to enter in their Great Golf Ball Drop at their yearly tournament on June 10. Dropped from a highend loader, whichever ball rolls closest to the hole wins its owner the grand prize – a largescreen TV! You can buy raffle tickets from the Hospital Auxiliary, purchase fresh hot popcorn or select flowers and plants for your garden to support the extended care facility activities. “We love our community, and this is our day to let them discover and explore all the ways we are able to serve them,” says Kuczka. So ready, set, mark your calendars for Saturday May 14, 9am to noon, and bring the family to the fair – the Boundary Community Hospital 2016 Fun Run & Health Fair!

ADVANCING HEALTHCARE IN BOUNDARY COUNTY TOP NOTCH CARE

WITH MANY ADVANCES in technology, it is often difficult for hospitals and healthcare professionals to always afford the latest equipment. But here in Bonners Ferry we are blessed to have the Fry Healthcare Foundation that works diligently to raise funds for Boundary Community Hospital. And thanks to the Foundation’s efforts through their annual Festival of Trees fundraiser, Boundary Community Hospital recently added a Mobile Ultrasound Machine to their emergency department. “This is a welcome addition to our emergency

department toolbox,” said Boundary Community Hospital CEO Craig Johnson. “As a Critical Access Hospital, (a hospital certified under a set of Medicare Conditions of Participation (CoP), which are structured differently than the acute care hospital CoP), we need to stay current on technology that will save the lives of the people who depend on us to provide those services.” According to Dr. Stu Willis, Emergency Department Director, “Ultrasound devices have shrunk to the point where they are now handheld and can be used in the

CRITICAL ACCESS

emergency department for easier triage, faster interventions for acute events and better monitoring. In time sensitive emergencies you need tools like this that can be brought to the patient for faster diagnoses. For example, we can immediately see if a lung has collapsed and address the situation quickly and efficiently. Our friends and neighbors in Boundary County will benefit from having this state-ofthe-art equipment available, if needed.” Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to show what is inside your body. Similar to sonar used in ocean research, the ultrasound emits sound waves which pass through the body, which is 90 percent water. The sound waves bounce off tissues and organs and an echo is sent back to highspeed computers which use the echo to create an image. This results in a very detailed examination, which aids the physician in a diagnosis. In addition, some information is displayed using color Doppler images and includes accurate blood flow measurements. This is called color-flow Doppler. An ultrasound examination is fast, with very little discomfort. No radiation or x-rays are necessary. “The support and generosity of the community for the Fry Healthcare Foundation directly impacts the high quality of care provided by Boundary Community Hospital,” according to Fry Healthcare President, Carol Julian. “Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Festival of Trees such a success and giving us the opportunity to provide the hospital with this vital piece of equipment. The 2015 Festival of Trees raised over $40,000 which we are using to purchase the Mobile Ultrasound and other equipment for the Emergency and Rehabilitation Departments.”

GOOD NEWS

NORTHWEST MEDSTAR & LIFE FLIGHT NETWORK

PARTNERING IN HEALTH By Colin Anderson

Expanded coverage means quicker response for rural communities.

T

he beauty of living a rural life is wideopen spaces, privacy and a slower pace. Combined with stunning scenery and outdoor recreation, it’s the reason so many call the Idaho Panhandle home and don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. But a risk all those who live far from a major metropolitan area take is that if something goes terribly wrong with their health, it can be an awful long drive to the hospital. A recent decision by two well-known medical teams is aimed at cutting down that travel time in order to save more lives. As of April 1, Northwest MedStar is now fully integrated with the nonprofit, Oregon based Life Flight Network. “Similar to how Northwest MedStar was formed more than two decades ago, this collaboration takes best practices from each program to create broader, more comprehensive air medical services,” said Nancy Vorhees, chief administrative officer for Northwest MedStar and Inland Northwest Health Services (INHS). Life Flight is opening two new helicopter bases

– one in Walla Walla and one in Colville – and also adding a fixed wing aircraft out of Moses Lake. “Colville will see a significant decrease in the wait time for a helicopter,” said Justin Dillingham, chief customer officer for the Life Flight Network. “When a patient has a heart attack, stroke or other significant medical emergency, time can be critical. Saving 20 to 30 minutes by having the helicopter based locally will mean the difference between life and death for some patients or improve their quality of life after recovering.” The closest helicopter team servicing Boundary County is based out of Sandpoint and many are surprised to learn that this team alone transports roughly 300 patients each year. When the weather is too bad to fly, Life Flight partners with local ground transportation and can also get patients quickly to medically configured airplanes for transportation to Spokane or Seattle. The integration of Northwest MedStar into Life Flight Network will also improve the coordination of resources.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

18

“Should Sandpoint be on another flight, we’re able to utilize the team based in Spokane more easily. Additionally, we have a neonatal/ pediatric team based in Spokane. These crewmembers are specially trained to transport the most critically ill neonatal and pediatric patients,” said Dillingham. Clark Fork resident Jessica Herbig knows full well how minutes can mean the difference in life and death as she recounts her father’s near death experience: My dad was traveling west on Highway 200 almost to Sandpoint on his ‘51 Harley on September 16, 2007. An elderly woman failed to signal or use her brakes and ran him over as she was crossing his lane of traffic to turn onto a side road from the highway. I was living in Billings, Montana when we got the phone call that he had been run over, and we chartered a private jet to fly us to Coeur d’Alene. We reached the airport from Billings and arrived at the hospital as they were wheeling my dad up to the roof to get on the helicopter

OF SUNSHINE Local florist and greenhouse has all your floral and gardening needs BY PATTY HUTCHENS THERE IS NOTHING LIKE fresh flowers to brighten up a room or a person’s day. But living in North Idaho, the availability of fresh flowers in our gardens is limited to just a few months out of the year. That is where Sugarplum Floral & Greenhouse can help. They will find the perfect way to help their customers brighten anyone’s day year round and also help them with all their gardening needs.

“Seasonally, we offer bulbs, seeds, seed garlic, seed potatoes, onion starts, strawberry starts and asparagus roots,” shared Kramer. A colorful sight, their greenhouses stock an extensive supply of herbs, annuals, vegetable starts, perennials, trees, fruit trees, berries, roses, shrubs and more. “Our greenhouse staff plants over half of our flowers and vegetable starts from seed starting in January,” said Kramer. “And our hanging baskets are a particular favorite and sell quickly.”

Owners Tom and Anita Foust opened their business in September of 2007 and have been bringing sunshine to the lives of others for nearly a decade. “Sugarplum Floral & Greenhouse are actually two businesses in one,” explained the business’s manager, Shelly Kramer. “The florist part of the business is open year round.”

With a staff of seven to maintain the greenhouse, they are kept busy working daily seeding, mixing soil, watering and transplanting literally thousands of plants.

But Sugarplum Floral is much more than a florist. In addition to a large supply of flowers and indoor plants, they also have balloons, stuffed animals, baskets, containers, jewelry and an assortment of unique gift items that change with the season. Some of those unique gifts include locally made candles, handcrafted signs, Christmas ornaments, cards and even birdhouses.

Those at Sugarplum Floral and Greenhouse are grateful to the community for all the support they have shown them over the years, and enjoy in turn giving back to the community of Bonners Ferry. “We are very active in supporting our community,” said Kramer. Whatever your need, flowers for a special occasion, a unique gift item or inspiration for your garden, be sure to call upon Sugarplum Floral and Greenhouse. They will be happy to help you bring sunshine into your life. The greenhouses open April 20!

When creating the perfect floral arrangement to meet the customer’s taste and budget, their designers are experts in their field. In fact, their head designer, Teri Wallace, has over 40 years of experience. They can help design not only the perfect floral arrangement for everyday enjoyment, but can also consult with clients and provide them with flowers for custom wedding and anniversary parties.

“We are happy to deliver for our customers’ convenience,” said Kramer adding that they also provide arrangements for funerals and other occasions to express love and concern.

THE WAY WE WERE BOUNDARY COUNTY’S PAST BROUGHT TO LIFE

05.14.16 SAVE THE DATE!

Women in Business Event 2016 Ktuxana Room @ The Kootenai River Inn THE BOUNDARY COUNTY MUSEUM located in downtown Bonners Ferry will surprise and delight you with the renovations recently completed, and you can experience it all beginning May 3 when it opens for regular hours, 10am to 4pm Tuesday through Saturday. If you’ve never been in, it’s a must visit for every county resident because it is something to be proud of. Museum curator Sue Kemmis and historian Howard Kent, along with a band of fine lady/member volunteers, are to be truly commended for not only their devotion to the county’s sometimes infamous past, but to the protection of and exposure to a fine heritage. The museum is supported by donations from resident family members and friends who’ve cared to preserve the historical record for all to see. One room has Bonners Ferry Herald archives dating back to 1891 and it’s Kent’s job, overseen by the State Historian Keith Petersen, to follow the print trail on events and people who’ve left their mark one way or the other. Terry Howe has also contributed, as has Kemmis, to bringing forth the historical record from print. You can thank Eldora Gatchell for the very important photo frame displays that allow you to look through the windows of pictorial time into the way things were. And Mary Ann Kruger for her countless hours of graphic design and exhibit layouts. Fleet Graphics has done a marvelous job of printing the wall displays, including the outback displays of railroad and timber histories. And Stampede Lake Studios, Dave and Andrea Kramer, for the fine photographs of the Fletcher Martin bas relief sculptures.

Now, here’s a shadow of what these people have worked hard to bring you: it’s the entire hundred-year-plus history of Boundary County including memories, photos and some stories of the many small now defunct townsites like Adie, Copeland, Meadow Creek and Fry. There’s too many to list, but you’ll want to know where they were! Once in the door, you’ll walk through the industries of rail history, timber, ranch and farmland, fishing, hunting – everything we know today but in the way it was then. If you were to wonder how a decayed tooth was removed or “fixed” back then, look at the foot-powered manual drill used by the dentist and sometimes run by the next patient in line. Or at the rather crude tools used by the blacksmith to build incredible iron works and tools. Want to meet the county nurse who administered vaccines to most of the county’s then young? You can meet Nurse Chadwick here.

WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

MIKE DAVIS HAS BEEN helping people transform their lives for over two decades. As owner of Iron Mike’s Family Fitness, he is passionate about what he does. And as a trainer, Davis said the bottom line is to help people succeed in reaching their fitness goals. “We know what it takes and will provide you with the help you need,” said Davis of he and his staff.

Iron Mike’s successful over the past two decades. His success can also be attributed to the fact Davis has made the journey to fitness a fun and realistic goal for his clients. With 24hour access for members, people are able to workout at a time that is convenient for them. In addition to personal training, there is a private timed circuit room, cardiovascular machines and free weights. And for parents of small children, there is even a nursery to keep the kids occupied while you workout. “We have day and evening aerobics, as well as spin bicycle class, zumba and plyometric driven fitness classes, and also men’s and women’s locker rooms,” said Davis, who will soon introduce On Demand Fitness, which will allow people to go through a class 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The group fitness classes have been extremely successful. With a variety of classes from which to choose at all levels, people can find a class that will help motivate them to achieve their fitness goals.

In addition to top-of-the-line cardiovascular training equipment, Iron Mike’s also provides equipment for strength training. “We have a setting so controlled that a member ranging in age from 10 years old to 95 or older can train effectively,” said Davis. Included with one’s membership is also a wide range of group fitness classes offered in the day and evening. And if you are one that may find working out with others intimidating, that is not what you will find at Iron Mike’s. “We take the new member through and demonstrate the use of equipment to them so they can begin their fitness journey,” said Davis, who adds that the small group atmosphere is an absolutely empowering facet and integral part of his business as is the level of expertise of the instructors and trainers. With an abundance of equipment, the trainers ensure all the members have an individualized fitness plan to start designed to help reach each member’s goals.

With monthly membership fees starting at just $33 for the first family member and $22 for the second, Davis keeps his rates extremely affordable. He also offers discounts for seniors and for those who pay by electronic funds transfer. Davis and his staff believe the elderly or those near retirement age are those who most need to be shown how to adopt a healthier active lifestyle. To assist in this journey, Iron Mikes has implemented two programs, Silver and Fit and Silver Sneakers, which are covered in part by supplemental Medicare insurance companies. “If they don’t qualify, I offer a 15 percent senior discount,” said Davis.

“Our atmosphere is kind of the ‘Cheers’ version – ‘where everyone knows your name’ and members look out for other members,” said Davis. At Iron Mike’s, Davis has worked hard to arrange his state-of-the-art equipment so that each member has either the privacy they desire or where they can draw from the energy of others working out.

Why put off what you have been meaning to do? Stop by today to find out how the staff at Iron Mike’s can help you achieve a healthy lifestyle.

A BOUNDARY COUNTY

EXPERIENCE Explore Robinson Lake for fishing and more By Dwayne Parsons

I

magine this. It’s early morning. A pale gray-blue sky shows through the branches of cedar and fir from the small netting window of your camp tent. You are eager to rise; you want to be on the water when the sun chases the mist off the shoreline. You’re expecting a good day, no clouds. For early May, it could get quite warm. Temperatures in the upper 60s maybe mid-70s are possible. At Robinson Lake where you are camped, you’re little more than five miles from the Canadian border in Idaho’s forest abundant Panhandle, for it to be that warm this time of year. You can’t see the lake from where you’re camped. There’s a natural berm that protects the view from the lake, keeps you from seeing campsites, too, and cars and trucks while you’re fishing from the lake. You unzip the tent door and crawl out. You’re the first one up. The others are still snoring, lazy bones, all of them. But you’re happy about it and go immediately to prepare a small campfire from the limbs and twigs you gathered the day before. You brought your own firewood, too, pre-split into small already dried pieces not much bigger than your forearm. They’re for cooking and for talking while you sit around at night well after dusk, telling stories and stopping to marvel at the coyotes yipping, hoping you’ll hear a wolf howl, because they are here too. The boat launch, not far, is almost a mile drive because you go back out to the highway and around to another forest service road to get to it. That’s fine. You’ll be there at the right time, you think as you place your coffee pot on the iron grill, which will soon be hot enough to boil a brew of dark coffee, better than Starbuck’s. Maybe it’s the air, maybe it’s the early morning or maybe it’s true that coffee over a campfire, being stronger, is just better than you’ve ever had anywhere else. You smile. It’ll be ready soon, so you break open a couple of eggs and drop them in your cast iron pan, settling it in the corner right on hot coals you scooped there for just that purpose. Soon the eggs are sunny side up, just like your enthusiasm. Today is a day for brook trout. Though this lake has plenty of stocked rainbow and cutthroat, you are after a childhood memory of a big brookie you once saw here. Two or three pounds, hard to say. In memory,

it’s probably larger than it was in reality, but to your 15-year-old eyes at the time, it was an unbelievably fine fish and you wanted it to come back. You spent the rest of that youthful day wanting it, hoping for it, fishing. You’d cast a small red and white Mepps Spinner and brought it in just to where you could see the blade turning quietly in the off-color dark water when that big fish came up to it, mouth open ready to strike. And he hit it too, but shyly, and you jerk too soon hoping to set the hook, surprised by it. Then it was gone, but it left its imprint indelibly in your mind, colors and all. I love the taste of fresh brook trout. They have more flavor than the hatchery-bred stock of rainbow and cutthroat. Seems strange that regulations allow the harvest 25 brook trout per person a day in the Panhandle, compared to only six of the other trout

“Eating fresh trout is one of the best reasons to go fishing, aside from the escape to quiet contemplation and the reprieve from work stress and routines of ordinary life.” species. Most brookies are small though. If you’re fishing a stream, like Gillon Creek which flows out of Robinson, most of what you’ll catch will be 7 to 10 inches, very palatable, very tasty, but they’ll get up to three even four pounds in a good body of water like Robinson Lake. There’s a technique along with a good bit of luck in catching the larger ones. Here’s the grand secret, now exposed. It’s how I fish for brook trout from a boat. Using a fly rod, with wet line, I troll a small set of spinning blades five or six feet off the end of my fly line. On the end of a light tip, two feet from the spinners, I drag a black nymph size 8 or 10 or sometimes a woolly worm (a type of wet fly). Even in dark water, trout will see a dark-colored fly. But the spinners, which look and sound like feeding minnows, attract the attention of a cruising trout.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

Believe it or not, this combination (now you are sworn to secrecy) is almost a guarantee that you’ll be eating pan-size trout for dinner. Eating fresh trout is one of the best reasons to go fishing, aside from the escape to quiet contemplation and the reprieve from work stress and routines of ordinary life. Fresh caught trout cooked over an open fire in a cast iron pan (brookies are best in my book) – well, there’s nothing like it. I won’t argue about catch and release. I do plenty of that. But in the case of brookies and food on the plate, that’s what I’m talking about here. If you haven’t enjoyed that yet, then you are simply missing out on something really fine, and when you catch it yourself, the whole experience from the evening fire to the sound sleep, the early-morning rise in cold air, the camp coffee, the mist steaming of the lake as the sun hits the water: all that, my friend, is one very good reason to put fish on the table. It beats the heck out of paying top dollar for fish-farm-raised fish of any kind. You earn it, you know you did and you had a great deal of fun getting there, being there and thinking about it all over again. Can’t be beat. How to Get There Robinson Lake is about 25 miles north of Bonners Ferry, just off Highway 95 enroute to East Port as you head into Canada. It’s exactly 8.7 miles past the Highway 1 junction that takes you over to the alternative border crossing at Port Hill. You’ll see two signs, about a quarter-mile apart on the highway, for Robinson Lake. One is for the campsite, the other for the boat launch. They are on your left. Best thing you can do is get yourself there somehow. Even if it’s a nature walk on the forest trails they provide. Robinson Lake is a pristine, whole nature experience. Something you need to do with a friend or family members. Some of those trails are wheelchairfriendly and so is the campsite outhouse. So now you have no excuse. It’s one of the best examples, but only one, of Boundary County’s bounty and abundance in rich outdoor experience. HIKING THE INLAND NORTHWEST THE TRAILS OF THE SELKIRK MOUNTAINS

ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY MARY TERRA-BERNS

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

HIKING IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN. The fresh air, the scenery nature provides and the exercise relaxes us in ways not easily obtained anywhere else. Hiking not only reduces the stress of our daily lives, it gives us pause to appreciate the world around us. And that break from the everyday routine is what gives us new ideas and can help us be creative. In a journal article published by “PLOS ONE,” researchers Ruth Ann and Paul Atchley and David L. Strayer describe just that in their research about disconnecting from technology and getting out into the natural world. Their results showed a cognitive advantage in creativity and problemsolving when we spend time in a natural setting. Test subjects (Outward Bound participants) showed a 50 percent increase in performance on a creativity/problem-solving test after spending four days backpacking. David Straker, adjunct assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, also observed evidence of improved brain function in the outdoors noting, “Exercising in nature can have more mental health benefits than on a treadmill.” Fortunately we live in the Inland Northwest − an area with abundant opportunities to get out into the natural world and improve our brain function! There are numerous hiking trails that lead to wonderful alpine lakes where you can fish, scramble up to a peak for awesome views or just relax and let your brain go about restoring some prefrontal cortex-

mediated executive processes. Every spring, my husband and I look forward to more daylight and swapping snowshoes for hiking boots. With fly rods strapped to our packs, we head to one of our favorite destinations - the Selkirk Mountains. The mountain range begins at Mica Peak, southwest of Coeur d’Alene, and extends 200 miles into Canada to the Kinbasket Lake Reservoir. The range was named after Thomas Douglas, the fifth Earl of Selkirk, not the marooned sailor, Alexander Selkirk, the hypothetical prototype of Robinson Crusoe. Typically our first spring trek is to Harrison Lake, at the Pack River headwaters. If conditions allow, Harrison Peak and Little Harrison Lake are options from here too. Upper Pack River Road (trail #231), a few miles north of Sandpoint on the west side of Highway 95 at Samuels, follows the Pack River to its headwaters. The road is paved to the BonnerBoundary county line where it becomes gravel and can be a bit of a wicked ride from there if the road hasn’t been graded. Harrison Lake trailhead (trail #217) is at the end of the road, which is about 20 miles. This very popular (especially on weekends) six-mile round trip hike starts as an old road that narrows to a trail about half-way to the

lake. Nice views of “The Beehive” (Beehive Mountain) can be seen along the way. As you near the lake you will pass the “two-mile snag” and then the junction with Trail #6. Trail #6 originates in the Myrtle Creek drainage, west of Bonners Ferry, and is a slightly longer (4.5 miles one way) alternate route to reach Harrison Lake and Peak, as well as Myrtle Lake. Immediately after Trail #6, you will cross the lake’s outlet stream and start climbing the exposed granite just below the lake. At the upper edge of the granite, you enter the timber around the lake where the trail branches; some trails leading to dispersed camping sites. Harrison is a great lake for fishing success, especially for kids. Idaho Fish and Game stocks cutthroat trout here, and they are usually very hungry and fun to catch. Fishing regulations apply. If you plan on camping, secure food storage is required to discourage bears, and a food storage box is available. Harrison Peak, (7,292 feet) with its unique profile, reminds me of a huge ocean wave turned to stone as it begins to break. Summiting Harrison Peak is not for the faint of heart and will require some dedicated brain function involving busting through brush, rock hopping, and firm footing. You can access Harrison Peak by climbing the ridge north of

the lake. As you summit the peak be prepared to feel an abundance of wind around you. If the wind doesn’t bother you, and you aren’t afraid of heights, the view on a clear day is spectacular. From here you can see quite a few Selkirk peaks including Roman Nose and Gunsight. Also, immediately east of the summit, as is the case on many Idaho peaks, you can see an old fire lookout camp from the 1930s. Fire lookouts dotted the high country of Idaho in the early 1900s. Ray Kresek, author of “Fire Lookouts of the Northwest,” notes that Idaho had more lookouts than any other state – more than 900 in the 1930s. Initially many were tree lookouts - basically a tree with a ladder nailed to it or one with spikes pounded into the trunk (Harrison Peak itself was sufficient). Tree lookouts evolved into cupola style buildings, many built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. In addition to constructing lookouts, the CCC built many of the backcountry trails we use today. Back at the lake, if you prefer to keep some vegetation around you, but still want a little bit of a challenge (i.e., no trail), you can hike cross-country to Little Harrison Lake. Little Harrison Lake is only about a mile south of Harrison Lake as the crow flies. However, for those of us on the ground, it requires some

orienteering through brush and granite while side-hilling for about two miles. I recommend reviewing your route on Google Earth, printing the photo, and having a topographic map in your back pocket. The effort is worth it, Little Harrison is a gorgeous lake and you will likely have it to yourself. It is regularly stocked with cutthroat trout and the fishing is good. You can reach Little Harrison Lake from Beehive Lakes too. Here again you should be prepared for a bit of a challenge; there is no trail and you will need to engage your mental creativity and problem-solving abilities, as well as every muscle in your body. Scramble up the ridge to the north of Beehive Lake, at the top

of the ridge you will notice the backside is steep and rocky. The best route is whatever works for you. Keep in mind you have to come back this way or hoof it over to Harrison Lake.

The Beehive Lakes are not only popular with people, they are very popular with mosquitos, especially in the spring. Come prepared to fend off the little beasts.

The Beehive Lakes trailhead is at the end of a short fork in the road about a mile before the Harrison Lake trailhead. This is a longer hike, about five miles one way, with a few switchbacks before a level stretch, then up exposed granite to the lake. Once you hit the level section, while admiring the view, keep your eyes open for the small pond a little ways below the trail; this is a favorite spot for moose. We often see them wading and feeding around the pond.

So, to enhance your creativity and improve your problem-solving abilities, dust off your hiking boots and schedule your next hike to the Selkirks. Albert Einstein once said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun. Listen to Mr. Einstein and get out there and have some fun.

THERE ARE NUMEROUS HIKING TRAILS THAT LEAD TO WONDERFUL ALPINE LAKES WHERE YOU CAN FISH, SCRAMBLE UP TO A PEAK FOR AWESOME VIEWS OR JUST RELAX AND LET YOUR BRAIN GO ABOUT RESTORING SOME PREFRONTAL CORTEXMEDIATED EXECUTIVE PROCESSES.

Health & Lifestyle TRAIN BETTER

Spring Cleaning

Get a jump on your health this spring. By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor EVERY YEAR AROUND this time we get a primal urge to have some sort of spring cleaning in our lives. The birds start singing, the daylight lingers and buds begin to bloom. I’m not necessarily talking about your house, closet or office. What if our bodies yearn for a more intrinsic cleaning. This year why not spring clean yourself? We can take part in a sort of rebirth that can be done every spring. Take stock in where your health is and where you’d like it to be. When beginning the ritual of tidying your being, I believe we should start at the center. Go look in your pantry and refrigerator. What do

you see? Is it crammed with BPA lined cans of food, boxes of cookies and crackers, and jars of old condiments? Or do you see foods that can nourish your body? Here’s a hint – if you have a jar of basic ranch dressing, it’s a sign that this process may take a while. Pull everything out and check the labels of not just the ingredients but the expiration dates. Make sure you know what food is in your house and start to plan what you want to replace everything you purge with. I understand that eating healthy can be expensive and time consuming, but it doesn’t have to be. Bad health is much more expensive than healthy food ever was.

After you finish, it’s time to make some lists. One list of things in your life you aren’t happy with and would like to change, and one list of things in your life you’d like to accomplish. You can think big or small. Next to each item notate what daily habits are helping you accomplish your goals and what habits are impeding your success. I should have warned you this might take a lot of paper. Now, number the goals from easiest to hardest or most time consuming to conquer. If you start simple, it’s easy to keep your momentum going to accomplish more and more. If you know what you are doing to help or hinder your process, you now have a basic outline for success. And in my experience, once a goal is outlined on paper, it becomes much easier to put a plan in action and the obstacles seem surmountable. These

lists can help you work through mental and emotional roadblocks that you never realized you had. It can be quite cathartic if you take some time with this. I’m assuming that one of your goals that you discover is in reference to exercise. If you read any of my articles you knew it was bound to get to this subject at some point. It’s paragraph four so this is probably a personal record for me. Yes, exercise, or better yet training. I’m hoping that your primary goal in this arena is strength. I have found that with just a basic improvement in full body, multi-planar strength, a myriad of ailments seem to disappear. It’s been proven by countless studies to be beneficial in countless ways that you don’t need me to list off but are none the less indisputable. I once had a gentleman salesperson at an unnamed homewares store tell me (even though I didn’t ask) that he didn’t exercise because it was his belief that we only have so many heart beats and he didn’t want to use them all at one time. I can’t help someone like that. No one can. The only defining moment we have a definitive amount of heart beats is the second after your last one. Until then, it’s not too late to begin a program to get stronger. Learn to plank, pull, push, rotate, squat and carry. If you practice what I consider the six foundational movement patterns, your life will get better. You can start to clear the cobwebs of immobility. No one ever wants to be limited by poor health and almost everyone has the power to do better. Train better. Feel better. Be better.

MODIFY FORM, MINIMIZE IMPACT PROPER RUNNING FORM AND INJURY PREVENTION

STOP THE PAIN

PHASES OF H E A L T H Y T I P RUNNING

BY RYANNE LEMON, pta, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY WITH BLOOMSDAY JUST OVER a month away, many folks in the Inland Northwest are most likely lacing up their shoes and getting outside to enjoy this nice weather in preparation for the seven-mile feat. Most runners can agree that running is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding activities in which to participate. But unfortunately, it is also an activity that comes with a high chance of injury. Some studies show that as many as 79 percent of runners suffer from a running related injury each year. There are many ways in which a runner can minimize chance of injury, one of which is modifying running form to minimize the impact on the body. There are basically three phases in running gait, each of which can be broken down into several different segments. There are differing views among therapists how to define and label the phases of gait, but in general, it is agreed that there is pre-landing phase, followed by an impact stage, and finally, a toe-off phase. During each of these phases of gait, there are considerations runners can make to get the most out of stride and to minimize impact for injury prevention.

running gait is to land on the midfoot or forefoot and then roll onto the toe. One way to minimize impact is to shorten stride length which promotes midfoot and forefoot contact and helps decrease overall ground reaction force. Another way to decrease this impact is to be mindful of landing softly. This can be reinforced by plyometric exercises where the runner completes a series of jumping movements focusing continuously on light landings. In toe-off, the hip goes into maximal extension. If hip flexors are tight, runners are more apt to excessive strain and arch in the back. Having flexible hip flexors and strong gluteal and hamstring (hip extensor) muscles can help maximize extension to get the most out of the stride during this phase. Getting a professional gait analysis can be very beneficial for any runner to help determine where weaknesses lie within their stride and what exercises or stretches can be done to help correct any problems. Hope to see you at Bloomsday in May!

In pre-landing, the brain sends a signal to muscles to prepare for impact, which causes the muscles to contract to stabilize the joints. In this phase, good posture is key. This means keeping your upper torso straight with lower back not arched and head directly over shoulders. Arms are bent at 90 degrees, relaxed at your side to aid in trunk stability. Having poor posture can cause a runner to lean back, which leads to over striding and increased impact upon foot strike. To aid in good posture, it is important to keep a strong core by doing core strength and stability exercises.

Wine and Weddings A Perfect Pairing By Megan Olson

T

he Pacific Northwest is invariably known for its majestic mountainous terrain and coastal beauty. The Cascade Mountains extend along the Pacific shore from British Columbia to California creating unsurpassable landscapes. This extraordinary area has emerged as a prominent region that is home to over 1,000 world-class wineries. Of those, some offer not only prestigiously crafted wines to tantalize the palate, but an authentic experience to appease the soul. The Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountains certainly set the stage for a vision of exquisite beauty. It’s the perfect union between the maritime effect and this mountainous region that generates the essential mild climate conducive for growing quality grapes. Latitude 45 extends through the temperate regions of Oregon as well as the Burgundy area of France. It’s logical that Pinot Noir and Chardonnay would be the heart of Pacific Northwest grape cultivation. Washington follows behind California as the second largest producer of wine in North America. The focus is to create quality flavors over quantity. Not only is the Pacific Northwest home to award winning and globally renowned wines, the vineyards also offer an authentic tasting experience. tasters alike can enjoy a hot air balloon tour with Pacific Peaks Balloons from April through October. The balloon ride travels over the heart of Oregon wine country in the Willamette Valley. Guests are able to obtain a unique bird’s eye perspective and then a tour of the eco-friendly Stoller Vineyards. The award winning estate manages every aspect of their wine production from cultivation to bottling. The Stoller Winery was the first in the world to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for sustainable and eco-friendly cultivation and processing. Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine region certainly varies from the climate of Central Washington. Maritime breezes tend to slow the ripening of grapes to create favorable conditions for complex flavors and aromatics. Oregon’s wineries tend to be smaller in size and are more decentralized than those of California and Washington. Evening Land Vineyard is the archetype example of a premier Oregon winery. The vineyard’s pinot noir was ranked No. 3 on Wine Spectator’s 2015’s top 100 best wines in the world. Evening Land certainly has put Oregon on the map as a formidable contender in the wine industry. The Columbia River is the largest river in

the Pacific Northwest and flows partially through the fruitful Columbia Valley that is comprised of approximately 11 million acres. The Columbia Valley is perhaps the most recognizable wine region in the U.S. after Napa Valley. This region extends in a triangular shape between the Oregon border, Washington, and Idaho. It has been coined as “The Mothership” of Washington viticulture as it makes up about one-third of Washington state.

country theme that includes “cowboy limo” tours and horseback winery rides. The cowboy limo is an open-air hayride tour of the vineyard with tasting stops. The horseback riding tour includes basic riding techniques as well as a tour and taste of the vineyard. As the season approaches, scenic wineries and weddings pair quite nicely. Novelty Hill Januik Winery in Woodinville, Washington takes the cake when it comes to providing an authentic and breath-taking wedding venue. Woodinville is nestled 13 miles to the north of Seattle, and this winery is renowned for its award winning Cabernet Sauvignon. The bridal party can reserve the entire venue which accommodates up to 120 guests. The culinary team prepares and serves a tantalizing meal infused by the estate’s wine. By evening, the fireplaces are lit to create an illuminated ambiance to complete a perfect and romantic day.

This valley is relatively arid and receives an average of six to eight inches of rainfall per year. Grapes for Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay do exceedingly well in this irrigated and relatively controllable climate to produce an abundance of quality wines. If the heights of a hot air balloon ride aren’t alluring and have wine connoisseurs looking sideways, a sophisticated vineyard bed and breakfast in the heart of wine country is the way to go. The Girasol Inn in Walla Walla, Washington has been esteemed as being one of the best B&B vineyard experiences in the world. Walla Walla is situated near the Oregon border and is about 240 miles east of Portland. The arid climate for this area allows for a variety of grapes to flourish. The owners planted Syrah, Sangiovese and Viognier in 2006, and the Inn was completed in 2007. The awe-inspiring backdrop and wine flavors have visitors making comparisons to Tuscany. Walla Walla is home to nearly 140 wineries and is included in the Columbia Valley region. The Cherry Wood Bed and Breakfast (and Barn) in the Yakima Valley is another distinct wine tasting opportunity. The B&B has a

The Pacific Northwest has emerged as a serious contender for the production of quality wine. The numbers of wineries in Washington have increased by 400 percent in the last 10 years. This agricultural shift draws in over two million visitors to the wine country each year, which is a multi-million dollar tourism profit. The ideal climate and longer hours of daylight foster an optimal growing season for grapes. The Pacific Northwest not only offers a multitude of rich flavors and award-winning wines, it also offers genuine winery experiences from exciting hot air balloon rides, unique B&Bs, and romantic wedding venues. It is safe to say that there is something for every palate.

Wedding Cakes This is one area that allows the couple to be as creative as they want! No longer are couples opting for the traditional wedding cake; instead, they are implementing unique creations that include metallic, painted, ruffled and “naked” cakes. Metallic cakes with an art-deco look are especially popular, including geometric shapes that give it a modern feel. Ruffled cakes offer a more elegant look. Naked cakes, which do not have frosting on the sides, expose the cake and filling. And whether it is subtle decorations or solid colored layers, painted wedding cakes are a popular trend for many couples. Be creative and have fun! It’s your special day! Lighting... Both functional and decorative, lighting can literally transform your venue for either your wedding or reception into a magical place providing a romantic feel to your already special day. If you are in an outdoor and open area, it can feel large and vast. Lighting can be used to not only define your specific space but can also make it feel more intimate. Luminaries are a great and inexpensive way to help light up an outdoor path. Do you have an outdoor tent? String lighting from above to provide an elegant atmosphere. Greenery If you want to be a little less traditional in not only your wedding décor, but also your floral arrangements, try “going green.” Using greenery is a great way to tie all of your decorations together – from tabletop centerpieces to a trellis to arrangements placed at the altar and even as cake decorations. You can either combine the leaves of things such as mint, rosemary and ferns with larger and bolder plant leaves or intersperse them with floral arrangements. Any way you utilize the greenery, it is bound to bring a beautiful and lush look to the venue at an affordable price! Wine Barrels Whether it is as a planter or a stand for your wedding cake, using wine barrels in both a functional and decorative way is a wonderful way to add a rustic yet elegant look to your venue. Many utilize a single barrel as a base for a table for those who are mingling, drinking cocktails and enjoying appetizers. Cut one in half, and you have a perfect side table. Others have even used a wine barrel for a guest book, allowing their guests to write their names on it providing the couple with a keepsake they can cherish forever. The possibilities are endless! TRAVEL & LEISURE

AN EXQUISITE

...AND IT’S JUST ACROSS THE BORDER

TASTE OF EUROPE BY DAN AZNOFF

T

he Canadian city of Vancouver has always held a special place in my heart. First of all, it’s the only municipality that requires a last name (B.C.). More importantly, it was the place where I spent the first three days of married life with my bride 36 years ago. There are literally thousands of ways to enjoy the urban setting and world-class offerings of this truly international city. Here are a few of the attractions that make our visits to Vancouver memorable every year. We thoroughly enjoy the month-long Celebration of Light international fireworks competition over Vancouver Harbour. Competing countries take turns turning the summer night skies into a rainbow of colors and heart-pounding thunder. The fireworks spectacular runs every weekend in July and concludes the first week of August. Lodging Galore Vancouver offers a variety of options for lodging, from modest motels on the outskirts of downtown to one of the two dozen bed and breakfasts nestled in residential neighborhoods. Our home away from home for jaunts across the 49th parallel is the Executive Hotel Le Soleil on Hornby Street discreetly tucked in the heart of the financial district between office towers, mega banks and government buildings. The four-star boutique hotel offers the definition of casual elegance. The rooms are well appointed, the staff is considerate, but not overly zealous. And the beds are simply amazing. My wife and I were so enamored with the sheets and comforter one year that we asked the concierge for the brand so we could

continue to pamper ourselves at home. Check out their website at hotellesoleil.com/vancouver. The central location of our hotel provides easy access to some of the city’s best restaurants and top attractions. The downtown core in summer is always vibrant with street vendors and festivities. Just down the street and around the corner from Le Soleil is the Vancouver Art Gallery with its distinctive exhibits by local artists. The gallery’s European collection includes paintings by Dutch masters that date back to the 17th century. The former courthouse on West Georgia Street is 41,400 square feet of galleries and exhibits that houses more than 10,000 permanent artifacts as well as plays host to traveling collections from galleries in Europe, Asia and America. The museum’s crown jewel is a permanent exhibit of works and writings by Canadian artist Emily Carr inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. vanartgallery.bc.ca Top Attraction According to TripAdvisor.com, the number one attraction in Vancouver is Stanley Park. I agree. The 1,001-acre public park adjacent to downtown is almost entirely surrounded by the waters of Vancouver Harbour and English Bay. A stroll through the wooded park takes visitors past lush gardens, a forest of totem poles, monuments and sculptures that trace the history of the city of Vancouver and the province of British Columbia. There are boggy wetlands and century-old Western red cedar, big leaf maple and Douglas fir trees. vancouver.ca/ parks-recreation-culture/stanley-park.aspx

A stroll through the wooded park takes visitors past lush gardens, a forest of totem poles, monuments and sculptures that trace the history of the city of Vancouver and the province of British Columbia.

THERE ARE TOO MANY RESTAURANTS, TOO MANY TASTY SAMPLES AND NOT ENOUGH HOLES LEFT IN MY BELT TO MAKE A DENT IN THE CHOICES OF EDIBLE OPTIONS. The highlight of the park for us is the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, which houses around 300 species of fish, almost 30,000 invertebrates and 56 species of amphibians and reptiles, as well as 60 mammals and dozens of birds. vanaqua.org For the more adventurous spirits, there is the Capilano Suspension Bridge located just 10 minutes north of the city. The bridge is 460 feet long and 130 feet above the river and is part of a private facility, with an admission fee, that draws over 800,000 visitors a year. capbridge.com Artists’ Colony For those who prefer to shop, make sure to save three to four hours to walk through the Granville Island Public Market. The island in the middle of the city is a colorful artists’ community that offers a living, breathing urban oasis filled with fine waterfront restaurants, theaters, galleries, studios, unique shops, cafes and the second most spectacular fresh food market you’ve ever seen. There are too many restaurants, too many tasty samples and not enough holes left in my belt to make a dent in the choices of edible options. Our dilemma is always whether to go back

to a tried-and-true favorite or explore other culinary opportunities. Personally, I am drawn to the Granville Sports Center where they have an impressive collection of Jackie Robinson memorabilia. granvilleisland.com/discover-island/visitorsguide International Flare Of course, no reflection of a city is worth its salt unless it includes a review of its top dining establishments. The restaurant scene in Vancouver is bursting with an outstanding collection of seafood restaurants. Many of the best steakhouses in town have added sushi, sashimi and other Asian delicacies to the menu. Instead of recommending one restaurant over another, I will direct readers to the Yaletown District bordered by False Creek, Robson and Homer Streets. The area that was dominated by heavy industry and railroad tracks was given a facelift for in 1986 for Expo and is now one of the most densely populated areas of the city. Yaletown is home to trendy sidewalk cafes, breweries and popular eateries. Most of the establishments require advanced reservations, even on weeknights during the off season.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

But I would be selfish if I did not mention the ONLY restaurant we’ve gone back to on multiple occasions, the Blue Water Café on Hamilton Street (about a mile walk from Le Soleil.) We normally stick to some of the chef ’s exclusive presentations of shell fish, his cioppino or a simple piece of grilled halibut. Why fool with perfection? One thing is certain. Do not ask for an extra fork if you order the chocolate cake because you will not want to share it. The city of Vancouver offers something for virtually every taste and every budget. Don’t forget your passport or enhanced driver’s license and bring a large dose of patience for the time you’ll spend waiting to cross back into Washington at the border. For those with limited amounts of patience, I recommend AmTrak. Dan Aznoff was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the toxic waste crisis. An entrepreneur is a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk. This term, previously used to referred to men in the business world, is now being used to represent the fast growing world of women business owners. Believed to now represent approximately 30 percent of businesses in the United States, entrepreneurial women are starting to take charge as they passionately prove how strong and capable they are. Bonners Ferry Chamber celebrates this success as they host the 2016 Women in Business Event at the Kootenai River Inn. On Saturday, May 14, women of Boundary County are invited to attend The 2016 Women in Business Event in the Ktuxana Room of the Kootenai River Inn.
