Robotics Students Gain Real Life Experience Students Collaborate with Local Agencies and Businesses to Reduce Wildlife Involved Traffic Accidents By Oscar Lopez | Photos by Ed Katz

rivers on U.S. Highway 95 may have noticed wildlife alarms and cameras between Naples and MacArthur Lake in Boundary County. If the warning system provides research opportunities and real-life education for Boundary County students, all the better.

of being used to receive similar data from roadway obstructions; an infrared video camera that uses wavelength to form thermal images; and a normal video camera. The sensors trigger warning systems that alert drivers to wildlife on the roadway. By analyzing the data produced, the system can be adjusted as needed to make sure that the equipment is tuned correctly and is in proper working condition.

It all began with Kennon McClintock who is part of the Nature Conservancy and the parent of former BFHS robotics student and graduate Molly McClintock. McClintock and Bryce Sloan of Sloan Industries had the idea to bring students into their project which involves analyzing highway-wildlife accident data. The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, Sloan Security Group, and Nature Conservancy are all involved. Sloan Industries works with perimeter detection units, defense applications, and the like.

BFHS robotics students were initially asked to become a part of the project due to their technology and programming experience. They are excited about the opportunity. Said junior Trey Dufrene, “There’s a need for research, and I’m glad for the chance to contribute.” Freshman Sophie Claphan concurred. “I’m involved in the raw data analysis. I’m interested in where this could take us.”

The elaborate system consists of Doppler radar, which is usually used to determine the location and the velocity of storms, but is also capable

BFHS robotics mentor and engineering instructor Ed Katz remarked, “The best part about this project is that students get some real-world experience and a chance to work with cutting edge technology and data transmission. This is education at its finest.”

f the average person were asked to describe the inside of a high school, his or her answer would probably involve disorganized lockers, dim lights, and plain, whitewashed walls. Bonners Ferry High School is striving to change this stereotype. BFHS art teacher Josh Knaggs and his Advanced Art class students have spent countless hours over the last few years doing what past generations may have thought unthinkable: coloring on the walls. Over the years, hundreds of students have

been involved in the project. Project Paint the School, lovingly referred to as PPTS, is a major part of the effort to make school a more enjoyable environment for students. The art students are assigned a classroom doorway, and with the specific teacher’s guidance, paint a marvelous work of art complying with the classroom’s activities, the subject’s academic guidelines, and the teacher’s personal interests. For example, Mrs. Lee’s English class has

paintings of scenes from classroom novels. Robert Swanson, a senior who has participated in PPTS, describes it as something that makes the school a more creative place. “It really helps us think outside the box,” he said. Many students would agree with Swanson. Not only does PPTS showcase students’ artwork, it provides a little brighter view for the other students passing by. Project Paint the School has changed the school for the better, and perhaps someday every wall in the school will be bursting with color.

BADGER GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Led By Five Seniors, This Year’s Squad High On Enthusiasm By Coach Chris Chatburn | Reporting by Desi Minor

T

he 2013-14 Bonners Ferry High School girls’ basketball team opens the season short on experience but long on enthusiasm. Led by five seniors, the lady Badgers will try to push the tempo on the offense and pressure on the defense to keep opponents uncomfortable. Returning to the Badgers is Mckenzie MacDonald who will be asked to handle the ball and provide scoring both inside and out. Emma Kelly will also be looked upon to provide scoring beyond the arc, while the trio of posts, Desirae Minor, Kaley Piatz, and Jailee Foster, will hold down the low blocks for the team. Sophomores round out the squad with Abby Davis taking over at point and reserves Kayleigh Morgan, Aaliyah Zarate, and Regan Byars expected to contribute off the bench. The lady Badgers are led on the bench by Chris Chatburn, who is in his first year with Bonners Ferry. Chatburn has coached at the high school level in North Idaho for 14 seasons and is excited for his first year with the lady Badgers. “I really like the group we have,” said Chatburn. “We’re working hard to get better every day in practice, and I think we will exceed expectations before the season is over.” Rounding out the staff is Mike Cowley, jv coach, and Donovan Delude, varsity assistant.

HEALTHYLIVING

Keep your family on track and incorporate a few simple rules for healthy living into your busy lives.

Managing Stress & Depression this Holiday Season Helpful Tips

H

QUICK TIP

appy Holidays! The holiday season can be a time filled with joy, family and friends. We gather for lovely meals, sharing gifts and spending quality time together. However for some, it can be overwhelming with additional time and energy involved in preparation while simultaneously living up to your normal responsibilities. The true heartfelt graciousness we intend to share can inadvertently be cast aside due to physical fatigue and/or mental

By Laura Sferna, MA, LCPC, RYT exhaustion. For others, the holidays can lead to increased worry, stress and depression. Concerns about finances, family chaos, having to prepare large meals and social isolation are often factors that contribute to anxiety and depression this time of the year. Expectations become overwhelming and inability to be with family can lead to loneliness. Creating a wellness plan beforehand will provide the skills to cope and the opportunity to truly experience the joy of the holiday season. There are many simple wellness practices

that can help. By engaging in the following practices prior to and during the holiday season, you will be capable of approaching the holidays with a lifted mood and a calm, open outlook. Tune in to your body: Go for a walk, exercise at the gym or take yoga classes. Restorative yoga poses bring balance to the nervous system and calm the mind. Legs-up-the-wall is a simple pose you can practice at home. Sit sideways next to a wall. Extend your legs up one at a time while moving your trunk around and lie

down on your back. Adjust yourself to get your buttocks against or close to the wall. Stretch your arms along your sides and turn your palms up. Remain in this position for five minutes or as long as you’re comfortable. Deepen your breath: According to the teachings of yoga, when the breath is disturbed or agitated, the mind will also be agitated. Establishing a steady, easy flow of breath will cause the mind to become steady and calm. A simple home practice begins by sitting quietly and noticing your breath. Gradually extend your inhale and exhale completely. Work towards making your exhale longer than your inhale, which is a technique that deepens relaxation. Become aware of your thoughts: Notice the stories you are telling yourself and become aware of your expectations for yourself and others. Once we become aware, we have the opportunity to shift our thoughts in a positive direction. An affirmation such as, “I breathe in calmness, I breathe out worry” or “I let go of expectations” can be repeated as a reminder of your intention. Express gratitude and volunteer: Studies have shown a decrease in depression in individuals who wrote down what they were grateful for on a daily basis. Keep

your own journal and note what you are grateful for or express your gratitude by volunteering at a food bank or soup kitchen during the holidays. This social opportunity can prevent loneliness as well. Eat mindfully: Be aware of which foods support your energy and mood. Notice when you are eating out of hunger or for emotional reasons. Although we are surrounded by excess food during the holidays, select your favorite treats and dishes while avoiding excess sugar, fats, caffeine and alcohol. By making small additions or changes to your daily routine, you can incorporate

some of these simple practices which can lift your mood and decrease anxiety, stress and worry this holiday season. Enjoy the goodness of the holidays! Laura Sferra is a licensed counselor in private practice and a registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance. Laura weaves the many benefits of yoga into her counseling practice, offering alternative ways of managing stress, anxiety, depression and other emotional concerns. She specializes in eating disorders and offers yoga classes through Garden Street School of Yoga in Coeur d’Alene. For more information, go to www.SferraCounseling.com.

HEALTHYLIVING DECEMBER 2013

Take Your Multivitamin to Control Diabetes

Reduce The Likelihood Of Infection

F

or people with diabetes, taking a multivitamin every day can mean much more than a little protection against the common cold.

Research is finding that multivitamins can be the first line of defense against many different types of infections, including respiratory infections and influenza. “Once a person with diabetes gets an infection, it’s much harder for them to get rid of it, and it can lead to dire consequences, even death,” says Registered and Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist Debra Spector. “And since some diabetic patients don’t normally respond well to treatment, prevention is key.” Taking a special diabetes multivitamin, usually found in the diabetes section of a drugstore, not the vitamin section, allows a diabetic person to be proactive with their health and avoid nutrient deficiencies that can lead to problems. A year-long study among 130 patients, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that the incidence of infection was much lower among diabetics who took a multivitamin versus those who did not. Infection occurred in only 17 percent of diabetic patients who took a multivitamin versus the 93 percent who took a placebo. The study also found that regular multivitamin usage reduced the rate of minor urinary tract and gastrointestinal infections in people with diabetes.

Boundary PERSONAL CARE

Because of the nature of the disease, it’s not uncommon for diabetics to experience nutrient deficiencies. Diabetes medications and frequent urination can lead to the loss of vital nutrients that protect the body. “Since there are many health risks that can result from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, I encourage my diabetic patients to find a multivitamin supplement with more potent levels of important nutrients to meet their needs,” says Spector. “It should contain Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), an important nutrient that most ‘regular’ multivitamins do not have. I like Multi-betic Diabetes Multi-Vitamin since it has 23 important nutrients, including ALA, designed to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels, support vision and promote nerve function.” Learn more about Multi-betic and other diabetic products at www.diabeticproducts.com.

Substitute Yogurt in Your Recipes

E

ating healthier does not mean one must deprive him or herself. Instead, how about replacing low-nutrient foods with healthy substitutes. Incorporating yogurt into basic recipes is the perfect way to start.

By using yogurt instead of sour cream, cream cheese, whipped cream or mayonnaise, meals become not only lower in calories and fat, but also higher in calcium and protein. In baked goods, yogurt can improve texture and keep foods moist. When it's not heated, yogurt provides live active cultures, which can aid digestion and provide immune system support. Greek yogurt - a thick strained yogurt - is especially versatile in cooking. It can be used in dips, spreads and low-fat desserts, or in any recipe that calls for cream, cream cheese, ricotta cheese, sour cream or other fats. You can even use Greek yogurt as an egg extender by replacing one egg with one-fourth cup yogurt. For a decadent, reduced-fat dessert, try this recipe:

W

ith the New Year comes resolutions. Forty percent of Americans make a New Year’s resolution while only eight percent actually reach their goal. The number one resolution in 2013 was to lose weight. That was my resolution eight years ago. I stepped into the gym clinically obese with health problems, but was determined. I reached my goal. It didn’t happen overnight; and while most people gain their weight back, I’ve kept most of my weight off. I’m not telling you this to boast, but to give you tips on how to make that resolution a reality and to help you to understand that it’s a process. Health and fitness are a journey. Once those 50 pounds are shed or you finish your first marathon, the road doesn’t come to an end. It takes commitment, determination, and tenacity to gain health and keep it – especially in today’s sedentary, quick fix society. Family time includes watching a movie instead of going for a walk; kids play video games instead of playing outside; and we work in front of computers all day instead of laboring in the soil. Our bodies have become accustomed to leading a sedentary life unlike our forefathers whose days demanded physical labor and activity. Most of us don’t know how to cook unless it comes from a box or a can and then we nuke it in the microwave. Or we stop at the deli on our way home instead of cooking. Our society and most lifestyle’s today don’t promote health and fitness, so we have to be proactive in our decision to be healthy….it doesn’t happen without effort. In order to be one of the eight percent, set a goal that is attainable and realistic with short term, medium, and long term goals.

Make a plan! If you fail to plan you plan to fail. Your resolution doesn’t have to be to lose weight. Start with something smaller so that your changes will last. Below are some suggestions you can start with today! • Ditch the soda and drink water instead. • Eat breakfast every morning. • Eat five servings of vegetables and fruit a day (V8 doesn’t count). • Commit one week to not eating anything processed. You will feel better. One week will turn into 2 weeks.

Opt for coconut oil, olive oil, or butter. • Exercise 60 minutes per day (you don’t need a gym membership to do this and the 60 minutes can be broken up throughout the day…shovel snow, vacuum, jog in place, play with your kids – just move!)

• Start reading labels…if you can’t pronounce the ingredients, you probably shouldn’t eat it. • Ask for help. Hire a Nutritionist or Personal Trainer. These are just a few suggestions. Don’t be one of the 92% who fails. If you remember health is a journey and not a destination, you will succeed. How many lifestyle improvements will you make on your road to health? Julie Smith is a Nutritionist with a BS in Nutrition Science and is an ACE-Certified Personal Trainer. She can be reached at 208.255.9956.

Julie Smith is an Associate Producer of an upcoming documentary called “Why Am I So Fat?”

Stay in One of the Fabulous Homes at the Idaho Club By Colin Anderson

Sandpoint is written about and praised in newspapers and magazines all across the country for its beauty, serenity, shopping, and outdoor experiences. Visitors come from all over to experience this community located just an hour north of Coeur d’Alene. Being so close to something so special is often taken for granted. We say “oh we’ll get there this summer” or “I can’t get to Schweitzer this year, but next winter for sure!” Why not make 2014 the year to stop saying and start doing? And while you’re committing, why not make the trip easy on yourself by booking your stay at the luxurious and affordable ‘Lodges at The Idaho Club.’ Nestled along the fairways of the Jack Nicklaus designed course, each home offers all the finest amenities. Open floor plans allow you to spread out for easy interactions with family and friends, but you can also find privacy within the 3, 4, and 5 bedroom homes. Prepare a meal at home on top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances and relax in your own private hot tub after a long day on the slopes or strolling the local shops. Instead of a hotel wake up call, rise to a beautiful sunrise as you watch out your back patio for deer, birds, and other wildlife roaming the course and surrounding forest. Know that you will find privacy on this trip as you have access to a private beach and your own boat slip for touring Lake Pend Oreille. Try sailing, kayaking, wakeboarding or simply soak up the sun. If golf is your game, it doesn’t get any better than the Idaho Club’s Jack Nicklaus SIGNATURE course with the first tee box just down from your front door. There’s plenty to do in winter as well with Schweitzer Mountain just a short drive away. You can also strap on snowshoes or cross country skis and explore the now frozen course. Homes can accommodate up to 14 guests, and there are several floor plans available depending upon your party’s size. To see more photos of these beautiful homes visit www.gosandpoint.com. Make the call today as popular weekends are filling up fast! Experience all that Sandpoint has to offer and make your trip even more memorable by staying in one of our beautiful homes. We look forward to having you as our guest and Happy Holidays!

Are you looking for a place to spend the holidays with family? Christmas and New Years are just around the corner!
