GOODNEWS
Ambassadors Delight Bonners Ferry Crowd Fundraiser came with powerful message. By Robert Lavala.
The Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce livened up the social calendar in late November by bringing in the Harlem Ambassadors Exhibition Basketball Squad. The tickets were affordable and the entertainment level was off the charts. When first seeing the advertisement for the Ambassadors, I immediately remembered back to the early 1970s when I attended the Harlem Globetrotters in Boise. To this day the names of Meadowlark Lemon, Curly Neal, and Twiggy Sanders bring back great memories of the fun and excitement brought by those basketball tricksters. Granted the Ambassadors are not the Globetrotters, but they gave a wonderful performance and kept the crowd at the Boundary County Middle School entertained for the entire show. The crowd didn’t know how to take ‘Lade Majic’ at first due to her up front candor in presenting ideas about ‘black and white.’ But after looking into the group of onlookers and saying, “It’s okay white people... you can laugh at that” the edge was off and everyone got into the fun spirit of the night. At one point in the game, Lade Majic stopped
8
the game and ran up into the bleachers full of people and ‘hid’ from the referees Ken Yount and Travis Blackmore as they looked for her. Using her wireless microphone, Lade Majic told the crowd, “I’ll just blend in.” Everyone busted up laughing as she continued to use racial jokes to deflate racial tension (although I do not believe any existed). Our own NBA Wanna Bs featured play by some very talented local players including Brion Poston (who also was the coach of the All Stars), Conner Bennett, A.J. Bennett, Andy Rice, Dave Schuman, Chris Sabin and his dad, Ryan Farrens, Kelly Hinthorn, Amethyst Aitken, Ketta Everhart, and Cynthia Franke. It has been difficult to get the full roster so if any names were missed please forgive this writer! All of our All Stars were absolutely amazing and even were able to do some slam-dunks along with the highflying Ambassadors. There were so many great plays on both sides it would be impossible to list them. But one play that stands out was when Lade Majic pulled A.J. Bennett down from behind just as he was about to shoot a three point shot from well beyond the three point line. As she grabbed him and

pulled him backwards, he let the shot fly and as it swished through the basket everyone in the stands erupted in shouting and clapping. The Ambassadors brought a great show to Bonners Ferry and their star, Lade Majic, was a total professional and great spokesperson for the group. She kept using the motto of the Ambassadors, “You have to be drug free and have your college degree IF you want to be an Ambassador.” At this point the message was clear: As an Ambassador (in life) you need to stay away from drugs and pursue your college degree. It is a wonderful message that this group brings to local venues as well as around the world. The Harlem Ambassadors began touring in 1998, and since that time their tour schedule includes over 200 dates each year. They have traveled and performed in all 50 states as well as in 20 foreign countries. The message is universal and well received no matter where the highflying group goes. Looking at their website, it is easy to see that once they have been to an area the group that brought them there looks forward to bringing them back again! I’m sure it will be the same

All of our All Stars were absolutely amazing and even were able to do some slamdunks along with the highflying Ambassadors. for the Chamber here in Bonners Ferry as the event was a total success. A big “Thank You” goes out to Tamra Hiatt and Wendy Hawks for arranging this event for our community. Regarding the fundraising aspect of the event, all funds from ticket sales went into the Chamber’s general fund. All concession sales went to helping out our local students through the PTO.
Lade Majic was asked once by a girl how to get past the stigma of bringing a girl onto the court. Majic replied, “When I was younger, I would get to the gym early and complete my individual workouts before the big guys got there. They tried to run me off the court as well, but I held my ground. I remained on one side of the court and therefore they played half court games. When they tried to bully me off the court to run full court games, I held my ground because they weren’t being fair. Finally, one of the older guys respected the fact that I stood up for what I believed and said he’d be on my team so that I could run full court games with them. Some of the guys attempted to rough me up at times, but once they realized I wasn’t backing down, they respected my desire to compete. Before long, I had a lot of those same guys protecting me from other guys who tried to take cheap shots at me. It wasn’t too long after that that I was accepted as a regular “baller” at the gym… and, I wasn’t the last one picked either.”

LIFE & COMMUNITY Local Events and Stories
Be thankful this Christmas season.
Season of Miracles CELEBRATING THE MIRACLE OF UNSTOPPABLE PEACE AND THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHRISTMAS DAY TRUCE.
During the holidays, one could say that daily miracles occur because of the giving spirit that abounds. Community members strive to reach out to those in need, strangers greet each other with smiles, family members renew relationships, and everyday life becomes a gentler version of itself. This yearly transformation that is witnessed in communities all across the country could be considered a miracle in and of itself. During the month of December, we celebrate holidays that commemorate miraculous events that happened hundreds of years ago. Christians celebrate the gift of eternal salvation that Christ Jesus gave us, who arrived in this world, born not in a palace, but in a humble manger. Jews
celebrate the triumph over Hellenism, which had all but destroyed Judaism in 165 BCE; and God showed his promise of eternal care by ensuring the flames of the menorah were lit for eight days. Indeed, this is a season where miracles occur in abundance. But, what about some of the miraculous and world-changing events that happened within the past 100 years? Exactly 100 years ago, on December 24th of 1914, a miracle of global proportions occurred. It happened during The Great War and came to be known as the Christmas Truce. It was a quiet movement that started with individuals on opposing sides who chose to drop their weapons and celebrate. On a freezing December night, English soldiers sat in frozen trenches

with frostbitten hands. They were weary from war, but then something caught their eye. “The British troops watched in amazement as candle-lit Christmas trees began to appear above the German trenches. The glowing trees soon appeared along the length of the German front.” (politicalvelcraft.org).
We Set the Standard!
From dreary trenches, an otherworldly sound broke out as English soldiers heard a German baritone sing with conviction these simple words: Silent Night, Holy Night, All is calm, All is quiet. The soldiers felt as if a ray of hope had split through a nightmare as the gentle song rose over the frozen mist. Henry Williamson, a young soldier in the London regiment, immortalized this moment in his diary. Henry wrote, “they finished their carol and we thought that we ought to retaliate. So we sang The First Noël and when we finished, they all began clapping. And they struck up O Tannebaum and on it went, until we started up O Come All Ye Faithful. The Germans immediately joined in-- this was really a most extraordinary thing — two nations both singing the same carol in the middle of a war.” (politicalvelcraft.org). That night, German and English soldiers made a pact not to fight on Christmas Day. Instead, they shared food, wine, and other comforts of home. They wished one another Merry Christmas and took the time to look into each other’s eye to see each one’s humanity. This spontaneous cease-fire spontaneously spread through a 500-mile stretch of the Western Front, all without text messages or Facebook alerts. One German soldier summed
up the event by saying: “It was a Christmas celebration in keeping with the command ‘Peace on earth’ and a memory which will stay with us always.” (politicalvelcraft.org). It provides a valuable and timeless lesson that is equally relevant today. Erma Bombeck once remarked, “To receive a gift molded from love and sacrifice, selected with care and tied up with all the excitement the giver has to offer, is indeed rare. They don’t come along often, but when they do, cherish them.” That cold, awful night in the dark trenches was transformed as the sun rose on Christmas Day. The opposing soldiers offered each other a gift truly molded from love and sacrifice. The palpable peace that spread through the ranks was a gift so rare that they would cherish it forever. The camaraderie that developed among these brave men calls to us through the ages and whispers a gentle lesson. There is no situation where one can find himself completely without hope and no condition that can suppress the human spirit or override the innate kindness within each of us. Times of conflict often give birth to some of the greatest miracles of all. As Mary held her child on that silent night long ago, little did she know that she would bring into the world the child and the man who would serve as the symbol of salvation for millions of people across two thousand years. The month of December affords us the opportunity to slow down and reflect on all of the miracles that abound, whether they happened just over two thousand years ago or today.

STYLED FOR THE LADIES Picturesque, a destination spa in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Article and photos by Robert Lavala. Walking up the stairs at 7196 Main Street in Bonners Ferry and entering Picturesque you immediately understand that the environment is styled for ladies. Pink is the order of the day and chandeliers grace the newly renovated hallways and many of the rooms. Meeting with owner Nissa Henslee and marketing director Jaycee Atkins you feel their excitement about making sure that any woman coming into Picturesque is going to feel welcome and pampered. Inside this elegant spa you are invited to partake of professional nail treatments, pedicures in state-of-the-art pedicure chairs, hair styling, facials, and a relaxing massage by a licensed therapist. All of the staff receives ongoing training on new products that become available so that clients will experience the latest and greatest.
that everyone at Picturesque has the desire to fan the flames of beauty in all who come in the door.
out so you can always have the most current product.
“Every woman is beautiful in their own way,” says Nissa. “Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and ages. We want the ladies to ‘feel’ the beauty that is naturally in them.”
Downstairs will eventually be an indoor marketplace that offers various vendors the ability to close a door and lock their private selling area. So it will be like having several shops under one roof.
“We are hoping to make Bonners Ferry a ‘Destination Point’ for exclusive services and treatment.” Nissa went on to enlighten me that even the small, pillar-like, end tables at various stations around the salon were there for the ladies to put their belongings on. “We want to make the ladies feel so special.”
“We are hoping to expand the market in Bonners Ferry as many travel to Coeur d’Alene or Spokane for a ‘spa’ experience. We can now provide those services here,” said Henslee.
It’s all about having a place that makes women feel special. And this ‘feeling special’ according to Nissa “…starts with small things and then moves into other things in life… into overall wellness.” That is why you can find more than just treatments at Picturesque, they also offer several types of yoga, a private, ladies only, workout area and a photography studio.
Picturesque is definitely looking to capture the Canadian market as well from Creston and other areas just over the border. This is a high end salon geared towards enriching lives and creating outer beauty as well as sparking the understanding that beauty is from within. It became clear right away
The spa offers the full line of Kevin Murphy products for hair and beauty and they are the only spa in the area that carries this product. It is available for sale at the spa and it is a product that truly works. They also will have all of the new Essie nail polish line available as it comes

For the month of December the special is a 30 minute photo shoot with any purchase of hair, nails or facial services. Each month watch for new and exciting specials in health and beauty. Picturesque is also selling branded tee shirts and all proceeds go to the Boundary County Victim Services organization. This is to give back to women in the community. So when you think of health and beauty ladies, look no farther than Picturesque in downtown Bonners Ferry located in the beautiful brick building at 7196 Main Street.

BONNERS FERRY
IN FOCUS WRESTLING PREVIEW
The Badgers go to the mat. By Robert Lavala. As parents of a high school athlete we get pretty excited when our Badgers take the field, the court, the track, or go to the mat. Athletics have been a part of our family life for well over 25 years and even more so since our son became old enough to participate. The tension is pretty high as you sit/stand and yell your support for, not only your offspring, but also every other competitor on the field. Sometimes fans and parents get out of hand. Still, everyone that I’ve seen at our Badger wrestling matches have conducted themselves with respect and a good amount of self control. Wrestling is a sport that really gets your blood pumping! And I’m not talking about the person who is wrestling, I am talking about those watching. For whatever reason this centuries-old sporting event causes you to get hot all over as you cheer for your athlete and team. I’ve been in the stand while our son has played football, ran cross country, played basketball, and as he wrestled for the first time as a freshman. I can safely say that even though I was excited at all the events, none was more intense than wrestling. At the high school and middle school level the wrestling is a form of collegiate wrestling and also, in some circles named ‘Folk Style’. The major differences between college wrestling and that of high school is in the way they keep score. At the upper level the score is more based on taking bigger risks to get the pin while at the lower level it assigns certain points based on moves that control the opponent.
ABOVE T.J. Smith, in Badgers Blue. Photo courtesy Karen Perkins. TOP LEFT Coach Conrad Garner.
In either style the entire goal of the wrestler is to pin the opponent. Of course you can win by points accumulated but the most desired goal is to pin the shoulders of your opponent to the mat. This results in an instant win of the match and doesn’t leave it to points. Even if your opponent has a bunch of points you can still win by pinning him. It’s just like the knockout punch in boxing or martial arts... no matter how good they fought during the match if they get knocked out (pinned) they lose. Heading up the wrestling program is Hall of Fame coach Conrad Garner. Coach Conrad is loved by all and his excitement and determination while coaching spurs his athletes on to repeated District and State titles. The practice sessions are rough and really gets the kids into prime shape for the season and the assistant coaches are great motivators as well. Going into the 2014 – 2015 season Bonners Ferry has a great chance to again take athletes to District and State competitions. And then, looking ahead to other sports, wrestling plays a part in that too. When a student athlete wrestles they prepare for other sports as well due to the stringent workouts and conditioning that wrestling (and Coach Garner) demands.

COVER STORY THEM BONES
Get up close to amazing and fascinating animal bones in Copeland, Idaho. By Robert Lavala.
Them bones them bones them... elephant, snake, flying monkey, giraffe, deer and a whole lot more bones are what you will find at Nate Hart’s museum in Copeland Idaho. A big “Thank you” goes out to Glory R. who pointed me in the right direction to get ahold of Nate for a tour of the amazing museum. It is wonderful to find, nestled in the mountains of Northern Idaho, such an extraordinary collection of animal skeletons. And not only skeletons… but the skeletons all cleaned and put together in perfect order. When you first walk in to the spacious exhibit it is easy to be overwhelmed by the vast amount of white polished bone creatures looking at you from every corner. There is even an unfinished collection on the floor that is awaiting Nate’s attention and will get it soon enough. I asked Nate how long he had been interested in bones and skeletons and he told me that since he was eight years old he had been collecting and assembling the skeletal remains of animals. He has always found it fascinating to study the bones of animals to discover how they lived and even how they died. Holding up a large female moose skull Nate showed me and my family a nearly certain way that this animal had succumb to death. He showed us another skull of a smaller animal and

in the jaw bone were porcupine quills! This lead him to understand the way the animal finally died due to how it fought various other creatures. It was right there in the bones!
responsible for the stories of the unicorn as it grows a giant horn (5 feet long!) right out of its nose. It seemed unreal but there it was... bone proof and it is not the only one either.
Joking around I called him a forensic bone scientist, but after thinking about it, that is just what he is. We all laughed but the work that I saw in his museum was a testament to countless hours not only acquiring the skeletal remains of these animals but also cleaning, identifying, arranging and finally assembling them! One part of the process, the cleaning of flesh from bone, is done with a colony of dermestid beetles – bugs – that have been with him for nearly 15 years.
Another unfinished skeleton lays around the museum ready to be assembled and come to find out it is going to be 18’ (that’s eighteen FEET) tall once it is finished! Okay, you guessed it... it is an adult giraffe. Nate led us to where the three leg bones were on the floor and each one of them was nearly three feet in length. This is going to be a favorite once built.
“They are cheap workers and never get tired” he said. He showed us a small rodent skull that was put in a few hours ago and the only thing left was the bones! The process is incredible and one that is fascinating to grasp as he leads you through his displays. I cannot even begin to list the vast array of creatures represented; but suffice it to say, there were literally hundreds of different critters.
As of now the elephant with its huge tusks is
skeleton is begged the question: Where do you get all the bones? Especially since some of them are from remote parts of the globe. Thankfully, various programs and colleges donate the specimens to the museum as they either get new bones or are downsizing their departments. While Nate has collected many of the wonderful items, others have been given as a donation. I asked if archeology was something he was interested in and his answer was twofold. First he told me that his specialty is called osteology or the study of bones. Archeology digs up the bones and osteologists study, clean and articulate them once they are removed from where they have been retrieved. And then he told me of a fun program that he hopes to institute soon at the museum. He wants to be able to have schoolkids (any age) come and be able to actually dig up the bones from an area where he will bury them. Then the students can go through the process of articulation, just as he does with all the bones. There is a large area in the museum that is upstairs that is planned as a study lab for the students.
Joking around I called him a forensic bone scientist, but after thinking about it, that is just what he is.
One of the favorites for us was the Narwhal. This, according to Nate, is the creature that is

the favorite. The lower part of the jawbone of the beast weighs nearly 40 pounds. It is hard to imagine how much the rest of the giant skull weighs but it must be hundreds of pounds for sure. Thinking about how big and heavy this one

so that the students can clean, study and put the skeleton together in a controlled area. He wants to have microscopes on hand as well for further study of the bone density and other studies that require it. It was funny as I asked him what his major was in college... “I’m an English major” he said chuckling. At this time admission is free of charge and he doesn’t even have a donation box out. But once you see this wonderful display you will more than likely ask, “How can I donate?” The museum is not finished as his vision is pretty big. You can check out the website at SlowCheetahSkeletons. org to find out more. There are some things that could get done with the right kind of donations. The new construction could use some siding as right now it is only Tyvek; the driveway around the museum could use a couple loads of 3/4 - driveway mix and it’s pretty muddy; and, as always, all cash and BONEations are welcome!

Tips to Keep You Healthy
Want to lose weight?
Your Body, Your Gift. MIDDLE-AGED MUSINGS. TREAT IT WITH PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING.
BY TERESA PESCE.
This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. How many years have you wanted to lose weight? Did you know that for most of us, those years are decades? We’ve all heard of the “set weight.” Your body has a set weight which it will fight to maintain whether that weight is appropriate for you, underweight or overweight. It’s just the way our body works; it tries to maintain the status quo because it takes its current weight as its assignment: “Here – maintain this number of pounds. Thanks!” HOWEVER! (I love “however” – the key to all possibilities) The

body is also at your service. Did you know that if you pry yourself from the mattress and go for a walk for a morning or two, your body’s response is as follows: “You need energy at this time? Oh – okay. I didn’t know that. I’ll make you some and have it ready for you at this time tomorrow.” Exercise (expending energy) creates energy! Did you also know that you created every craving you have? Yup. Sorry about that… not to get too scientific about it, but

habits are ingrained neuron pathways resulting from repeated actions. Good or bad actions – the coin works no matter which side lands face-up. So bringing it back to our physical condition, the body has nicelygrooved habits it’s used to and an assigned set weight.
Change If you would like it to change, have a mental conversation about how to do that with gentleness, patience and kindness, taking small steps before you take big ones.
And January 1st is approaching and here’s you wanting to change everything! “Stop following those grooves and start launching into a total workout routine at an unheard-of hour in the morning!” Honestly, I feel sorry for our bodies. Poor, criticized, judged things. So let us take December to honor them. Give the gift of understanding and acceptance to your body, yourself.
“We need to talk” prefaces many a conversation one of the parties would rather not have. Your body might be wanting to talk to you, if you’d listen. It’s doing the best it can (it always does) with whatever you feed it and however you exercise it. So if you would like it to change, have a mental conversation about how to do that with gentleness, patience and kindness, taking small steps before you take big ones. You are a physical miracle made commonplace to our eyes because there are so many of us, but you are a miracle nonetheless. What a great gift you are to yourself, capable of learning foreign languages and building muscle! Perhaps you’ve never even thought to completely open your gift! What could your body do if you created time and opportunity to do it? Your body could change your whole life. At the very least, it could enhance your life! Take some time, have a talk, be thankful and grateful. And if you and your body agree some changes would be nice, do them together. Founder of Sandpoint Onstage, Teresa Pesce is dedicated to supporting and promoting everyone in our community with theatrical gifts, whose age is irrelevant and whose only “weight” is the impact of their art.

Snowga PREPARE FOR THE POWDER.
BY CHRISTINA HEFLEY, DPT, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY.
“And what exactly is SNOWGA?” you ask. Snowga is a blending of yoga and snowsports and was trademarked by Anne Kerrigan in 2009. She is a professional ski instructor of America and registered yoga instructor. Anne describes Snowga as an emphasis on building skiing skills through the principles of yoga. These include building breathing techniques through pranayama, improving concentration techniques through mindful meditation, and increasing strength, balance and flexibility through asanas or postures. How can yoga improve your downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, iceskating, snowmobiling and even sledding skills? First of all let’s change your perspective on yoga. It is not just “a bit of stretching” and it is not “just for those really flexible people.” Yoga is for everyone, regardless of age, injury or experience level. Yoga is an individual experience, and it is not competitive. However, it can improve your competitive edge as many of the US ski team members can attest to. Alignment, balance, strength, endurance, flexibility and reaction speed are necessary for optimum physical performance. Snowsports especially demand a lot from the body due to the high speed, spontaneous movements we are required to perform in cold environments, and often on unpredictable terrain. Preactivity stretching is extra important in these conditions to increase blood flow, heat up tissue, and awaken the brain-body connection through neuromuscular facilitation.
Examples of yoga poses that improve snowsports include: • Chair Pose (Utkasana) – Start with feet hip distance apart. Inhale - arms overhead. Exhale – sit back and down as if sitting into a chair. • Standing Separate Leg Stretch (Dandayamana Bibhaktapada Paschimotthanasana) – Step feet wide apart, both toes facing forward, sides of feet parallel to mat. Inhale – extend arms out to side. Exhale- swan dive forward with straight spine. Palms to the mat, shoulder distance apart. • Triangle Pose (Trikanasana) – Step feet wide apart. Start with right side, turn right toe out. Bend right knee, sink down into lunge. Reach both arms out at shoulder level. Then turn both arms like windmill, reaching right fingertips to right toes. Reach left hand to ceiling. Sink hips down deeper.

Make this ski season great by building your skills through yoga!
In cold conditions the body reacts by shunting blood to deeper muscles, joints, bones, and internal organs to stay warm. Developing a pre-snowsport yoga routine will assist you with moving your body through multiple planes of motion and to end ranges of joint, muscles, and tendons. In addition, moving the myofascia that connects our musculoskeletal system stimulates the stretch receptors and frees up microscopic adhesions that can form within hours of inactivity. Just like starting up your car on a freezing cold morning, you’ve got to get your gears moving before you slam into gear and race out onto the slopes.

WINTERGETAWAY
Let it Snow! Four mountains to tackle this winter. By Colin Anderson.
With so many great ski hills in our own backyard, sometimes it’s tough to leave our friendly confines and branch out to find new runs to conquer. While there are a half dozen great spots within an hour and a half drive, if you stretch the mileage just a little further you’ll discover even more of the west’s great ski and snowboard experiences. Here are five hills that might take a bit further to get to, but won’t disappoint when you arrive. Lost Trail Powder Mountain, Sula, MT www.losttrail.com
groomers. Drop off the backside and things couldn’t be more different. Here you’ll find nothing but double black steep shoots, and if you catch a big powder day on these runs, you’ll remember it the rest of your life. ‘Disco’ really does offer something for everyone with runs marked 20% beginner, 25% intermediate, 25% advanced, and 30% expert. Off mountain you can explore the mining history of nearby Anaconda, visit Georgetown Lake, or get the old west feel in downtown Phillipsburg. Brundage Mountain Resort, McCall, ID www.brundage.com
Straddling the Idaho/Montana state line and the Continental Divide, Lost Trail offers great snow, affordable tickets, and rarely will you find a lift line. While smaller than many of the regional resorts, Lost Trail still boasts 1,800 vertical feet, a long run of 2.5 miles, and 50 marked trails, giving you plenty to explore. Adult tickets are just $40, making Lost Trail one of the best values in the west. It is also one of the few nonprofit ski hills that remain today. You can book a cabin in nearby Sula or find a hotel or bed and breakfast in any one of the towns along the stunning Bitterroot Valley.
With an average of 320 inches each year, Brundage is almost always one of the first to open and last to close. There are nearly 50 marked runs, but it’s the bowls, glades, and tree skiing that bring diehards back here year after year. Brundage is also popular with the backcountry crowd as you can tackle 19,000 additional acres yourself or arrange guided snowcat tours on the mountain. Brundage is just eight miles from downtown McCall where you’ll find a multitude of places to stay, shop, dine, drink, and explore.
