OUR MISSION AT LIVING LOCAL is simple. It is to impact the communities we serve in a positive way by creating content that will connect the community with one another. It is an approach that has made us one of the most unique and trusted publications in the community and is something in which we take pride. We also realize it would not be possible without our clients and those in the community who have supported us along our journey. You have likely noticed that our publication is full of GOOD NEWS. It is here where you will find heartwarming stories of those people, organizations and businesses who are working to make this community a place people love to call home. Here you will not find anything political or controversial; those stories are for others to print. We love to bring stories that are unique; ones you will not find in other publications. In a world that finds many struggling, we enjoy bringing to the forefront the work of nonprofit organizations that work tirelessly to bring
blessings to those who may be facing challenges in life. Our goal is to not only connect people in the community but also to inspire one another, perhaps provide ideas of how each one of us can give of our time and talents to make our home an even better place. As another year closes, we at Living Local reflect on how fortunate we are to connect with amazing people in the communities we serve. Thank you for sharing your stories with us as we continue to strive to connect and inspire one another! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and many blessings.

LOCAL FAMILY MAKES FRIENDS THROUGH COFFEE AND MORE BY PATTY HUTCHENS | PHOTOS COURTESY OF MICAH SMITH

icah and Nancy Smith, along with their daughter and sonin-law Hannah and Ben Phillips and son Jacob Smith, operate Seven Seeds Coffee Roasters in Bonners Ferry. But their work is much more than a business to them; it is one of many ways they bestow blessings to others around the world. “We believe that when you are blessed, it is to be a blessing (to others),” said Micah. At Seven Seeds Coffee Roasters, the family purchases green coffee beans from the farmers they work with and then invest at least 10 percent of the roasted proceeds back into their production. “Coffee is just one of the platforms we use to meet the needs of suffering people,” said Micah, who adds that they started purchasing their coffee from small farms primarily in Southeast Asia and Nicaragua. The inspiration behind the name Seven Seeds comes from the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy, 8:7-8, which reads: “For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey.” Micah shares that in these verses the seven species of Israel contain a seed, and each seed is a miracle of God, bringing people together around the table of life and relationship. Micah said that they also view coffee as a seed and that it holds the same idea. No matter where he and his family travel, in the mountains of Thailand, Nicaragua or roasting on their site in North Idaho, the family
the tree to the cup. But there are other ways the Smith family bestows blessings on others as well. Micah and Nancy are the founders of Global Gateway Network, a nonprofit Christian humanitarian organization. Since first forming in 2002, volunteers with Global Gateway Network have traveled throughout the world with an intentional focus on connecting the skills and gifts of its team members with the needs of hurting people, looking for various ways and means to gain a voice for Christ. Their travels through Southeast Asia, Northwest India and the Middle East have certainly been a blessing to not only those who have received the benefit of the volunteers’ generosity but those who travel with Global Gateway Network and help to drill wells, assist with medical needs, build homes and support the agricultural field in those countries. “It has shown me how wonderfully generous Americans can be with their time, resources and skills,” said Micah. “I’ve also been impacted by the compassion, which I believe is God‘s compassion, expressed through the hard work and generosity of the many teams that we have sent to these areas.” Among the many things that Global Gateway Network has accomplished in its 16 years include planting churches in places that were otherwise unreached; launching more than 50 ministry teams to assist those hurting around the globe; rescuing countless children from starvation, prostitution and human trafficking, and even death; initiating a health education program in India. They have also drilled over 100 freshwater wells in India over the last decade and supported seven new village pastors in India as well.

NOW AT OUR NEW LOCATION! Experienced Dental Care for the Entire Family
To the areas of Vietnam, Thailand, Burma and Egypt, Global Gateway Network has brought in medical teams to treat the children and adults. The teams travel to remote areas and pay their own expenses. Providing a variety of services including medical examinations, medication disbursement, dental care, nutrition education and vision care, the teams then donate medical supplies they have used, saving an estimated cost of $4 million over the years. In Vietnam, they have built, developed and maintained The Center of Hope, which is a home for children in North Vietnam. They provide monthly support, school supplies, clothing, shoes, bikes, blankets and much more to the Center of Hope. Global Gateway Network is currently working with United Hatzalah to establish what is called an “ambucycle unit” in Israel. Basically an ambulance on a motorcycle, the vehicles are equipped with everything an ambulance has except for the bed. By avoiding traffic congestion, road closure and debris, the ambucycle allows first responders to arrive at the scene much more quickly than an ambulance.

The fact that Micah and Nancy have not only founded such an extraordinary organization to help people worldwide but have also committed a portion of the profit they receive through Seven Seeds Coffee Roasters back to the families who supply them with the coffee beans, is a wonderful example of how we can all make a difference in the world.

Taking Stock of Your Kitchen BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, DESIGNER AT SEVEN BEE INTERIORS, EXCLUSIVELY FOR PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER SANDPOINT FURNITURE\CARPET ONE\SELKIRK GLASS & CABINETS

ith the holidays in full swing, our attention at home naturally turns to the kitchen. The center of our homes, the kitchen is often the busiest room in the house. So it’s only natural that if we look to make any home improvements this time of year, our first thought is that our kitchens could use a little “sprucing up.” So many people are redoing their countertops these days. Granite and even quartz countertops are growing more affordable, and their durability can’t be beat. However, I often caution people against adding new countertops if their cabinetry is in sad shape, as eventually the cabinets will have to be replaced as well, and it just does not make sense to spend the money on counters if their cabinetry will not last for at least another 10 years. If this is the case with your kitchen, then my advice is to wait, do it properly and save for both new cabinets and countertops. You will not regret spending the extra money to have a whole new kitchen, even

if it means a year or two longer with the old one! However, if the cabinetry is solid and still functions properly (i.e. doors and drawers open and close nicely and the overall layout is acceptable), then a countertop upgrade is merited. If the cabinets still function and are solid but appear worn or dirty, then sometimes it can be a good idea to have them painted or refinished. However, if they are in good shape and clean but just “dated,” often just the addition of pretty hardware is all that’s needed to bring the cabinetry up to our current standards. Another upgrade option might include cabinets and laminate countertops that are still in relatively good shape but a worn, water-stained wood backsplash that we find in so many houses from the ‘80s and ‘90s. In this case, an easy fix would be to remove the old wooden splash and replace it with some great hard-wearing tile that doesn’t break the bank and ties the whole look together. A qualified tile

Often just the addition of pretty hardware is all that’s needed. installer can have this done in as little as a day or two with minimal disturbance to the rest of the kitchen. Flooring works especially hard in a kitchen, taking a beating from spills, dishes dropping, trash going in and out, dish water, etc. There are some great new LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) products out there that can go right over existing sheet vinyl, worn hardwood or even tile, that can add a layer of durability and beauty to any decorating scheme. They usually go in quickly and easily, and this is an upgrade that can be done in as little as a day! My advice: Take stock of your kitchen, look around honestly and ask yourself what needs to be replaced, what can stay and what needs a little tweak. To make it just right for you and your loved ones this holiday season. And always, if in doubt, contact a professional. Most of us are trained to take stock of what you already have while taking your wish list into account and come up with a game plan to make your dream kitchen a reality.

TIME TO THINK ABOUT YEAR-END INVESTMENT MOVES THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL

You’ve Spent a Lifetime Preparing for Retirement.

• Add to your IRA. For the 2018 tax year, you can put up to $5,500 into your traditional or Roth IRA (assuming you are eligible) or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. If you haven’t reached this limit, consider adding some money. You have until April 15, 2019, to contribute to your IRA for 2018, but why wait until the last minute? • Increase your 401(k) contributions. You already may be investing in your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, but you might be able to bump up your contributions for the rest of the year, if it’s allowed. Of course, you should always put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. • Take your RMDs. If you are 70 ½ or older, you must start taking withdrawals—called required minimum distributions or RMDs— from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. Generally, you must take these RMDs by December 31 every year. But if you turned 70 ½ in 2018, you can wait until April 1, 2019, until you take your first RMD. However, you will then have to take a second RMD (the one for age 71) by December 31, 2019. Taking two RMDs in one year could give you an unexpectedly large taxable income for the year, possibly bumping you into a higher tax bracket and affecting the amount of your Social Security benefits subject to taxes. So, if you are considering delaying your first RMD, consult with your tax advisor.
child? Or did you change jobs or retire? Any of these events could lead you to adjust your investment plans, so now may be the time to do so, possibly with the help of a financial professional. • Review your investment mix. At least once a year, it’s a good idea to review your investment mix to ensure it’s still suitable for your goals and risk tolerance. Sometimes, even without your taking any action, your portfolio might change in ways you hadn’t expected. For example, suppose you wanted your portfolio to contain 60 percent stocks and 40 percent bonds and other investments. After a period of rising prices, though, the value of your stocks may have increased so much that they now occupy 65 percent of your portfolio—which means you may be taking on more risk than you had originally intended. Consequently, you may need to rebalance your portfolio to get back to your original 60 percent to 40 percent ratios. (Keep in mind that these figures are just for illustration; everyone’s ideal portfolio mix will depend on their individual situations.) These aren’t the only year-end moves you may want to consider, but they can help you close out 2018 on a positive note. Plus, they can serve as a reminder that you need to be vigilant as you keep working toward your financial goals.

a-week rehearsals, which began in October.
Performances will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, December 14 at 7:30pm and on Sunday, December 16 at 3pm. This year the community choir will be led by Julie McLeish, who will be taking over for Vicki Blake Thompson, who conducted the choir for the past 22 years.
While the concert is free, donations are accepted and will go to the cost of purchasing music, practice CDs and choir workshops.
Julie, who taught music for one year in Idaho Falls, has been involved in many choirs throughout the area and looks forward to bringing the wonderful voices of Bonners Ferry to life for the community to enjoy. Accompanied on piano by Jeff Hunsaker, Julie said as of mid-November there were approximately 30 vocalists attending the once-
“There are people of all different religions, and some who are not affiliated with a religious background, who come together to sing,” said Julie. “This choir is such a great part of the community, and Vicki has left a great legacy.”
“It is so amazing to listen to the harmony of the singers,” said Julie. “I love to direct, and this is a dream come true.”
Julie shares that the annual Christmas Concert put on by the community choir is truly all about community.

Auxiliary preparing for annual fundraiser
BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS COURTESY OF BOUNDARY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
I
f you’ve wandered the hallways or been a patient of Boundary Community Hospital, then you’ve more than likely seen the effects of one of the longest standing community groups in the area. For more than six decades, the Boundary County Hospital Auxiliary has been raising funds in order to purchase much-needed equipment in all areas of care. The Auxiliary started up in 1953 when a group of interested women met at the courthouse and voted to establish the unit, whose primary purpose would be to give assistance to the hospital in a service capacity. That assistance has varied greatly throughout the years depending on need and availability. Boundary Community Hospital Marketing Director Lauren Kuczka was able to dig into the records dating back to the ‘50s and found that the early days of the Auxiliary included floor aids who evolved into certified nursing assistants, a canning committee and a sewing committee. Excerpt from September 1955 minutes: “Sewing Committee makes and mends garments and articles, which include baby binders and blankets, children’s pajamas, slings, terry cloth
slippers and other miscellaneous items. Also made pert striped uniforms the floor aides wear while on duty.” Today the group focuses on generating capital so it can help the hospital purchase the latest technology and other important office equipment. The BCH Auxiliary raises funds mainly through soda sales from the hospital vending machines and from the annual pie sale. “The funds are used to purchase items for all of the departments at the hospital,” said President Shirley Mayo. Most recently the Auxiliary purchased portable radios for the ECF nurses, infection prevention isolation caddies for Acute Care and ECF, stools for outpatient surgery and a patient scale with handles for Boundary Community Clinics. Hospital department managers make requests, which are vetted by senior management at the hospital. The requests are brought to the Auxiliary membership at their monthly meeting where they are reviewed and approved by the members.

If you are interested in learning more about the group or volunteering, the Hospital Auxiliary has a monthly business/social meeting the second Tuesday of each month from September through May at 11:30am at Chic-N-Chop. “Several members volunteer at the Extended Care Facility helping with bingo, working in the garden and visiting with the residents,” said Mayo. The major fundraiser for the year is the Annual Pie Sale. The event is held at Trinity Lutheran Church in February, and the Auxiliary says it will need plenty of pie bakers and plenty of pie buyers. While the date hasn’t been firmed up just yet, be sure to check the January issue of Bonners Ferry Living Local for event date and hours. Six decades of positively impacting the community, and the Auxiliary hopes to continue doing so as long as possible. More input and volunteers are needed. If you would like to have a large impact on your community without a large time commitment, this might just be the group for you.

BOYS’ SOCCER TEAM RECOGNIZED FOR SPORTSMANSHIP BY PATTY HUTCHENS
W
hen it comes to athletics, there is so much more to it than teaching our youth the fundamentals of the game. There is the aspect of sportsmanship and learning to balance all that goes on in a teenager’s life academically, athletically and socially. When parents, coaches and teachers come together to support students in becoming their best, amazing things can happen. In early November, the Bonners Ferry Boys Soccer team traveled to state and won the 2018 State 3A Soccer Sportsmanship Award. In a letter to Boundary County School Superintendent Gary Pflueger, the assistant director for the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA), Mike Federico, commended the school district and its representatives. “Sportsmanship is a top priority of the IHSAA. The ideals of sportsmanship permeate virtually every aspect of our culture, and the ethics of fair play may be witnessed in all facets of life,” wrote Federico. “The origins of sportsmanship have been firmly established in educationbased activities as a training ground for good citizenship and high behavioral standards.” In determining who is the most deserving of this prestigious award, an independent committee attended this year’s state tournament and judged all of the tournament’s coaches, participants, administration and spectators— including parents and other representatives.
“Each school was evaluated on important behaviors that are guiding principles of sportsmanship and citizenship, and Bonners Ferry High School was a true example of a positive school culture and a community with pride,” said Federico. The Idaho High School Activities Association also commended Principal Kevin Dinning for being a positive role model at Bonners Ferry High School, emphasizing that it was his leadership that shined through in the behavior of the coaches, players, school representatives and spectators at this year’s tournament.

In an interview earlier this fall, Head Coach Wayne Wilkerson had high praises for his team. “It’s a fantastic group of young men that all seem to just jive and get along,” he said, citing just one of the many reasons he enjoys coaching this group. Wilkerson has coached the boys for the last four years but has been part of the program since 1999 as either a head or assistant coach. Congratulations to the entire team for an outstanding soccer season and being a shining example to others about what it means to display good sportsmanship. And a special thank you to the parents, staff and coaches who serve as role models to these exemplary young men.

BONNERS FERRY IN FOCUS THE KEY TO POWERING FUTURE INNOVATION INLAND NORTHWEST TECHNOLOGY PROS ASSOCIATION AND IT/OT CONVERGENCE BY JULIE BERRETH, TURNBUCKLE STRATEGY & DESIGN PHOTOS COURTESY OF LITEHOUSE , INC.
L
ooking forward, successful convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) will be a driving force behind business-growth initiatives. Through the integration of these two disciplines, companies can utilize real data to drive efficiencies and productivity that will accelerate product-to-market times and boost demand while reducing costs and risks. It also creates opportunities for economic growth that strengthen communities. While operational technology brings value to the manufacturing industry through sensors and devices, information technology supports the software used to process the required information to manufacture products and run the business. Overcoming challenges posed by the traditionally competing priorities of the two groups is crucial to successful convergence; these include merging strategies, governance and protocol, as well as security and data.
Two Inland Northwest companies are leading the charge with significant examples of how IT/OT convergence creates competitive advantages and fuels innovation. Litehouse, Inc. For Litehouse, a longtime food and beverage manufacturer, necessity was the mother of invention. In order to meet customer demands and increase sales positioning, the company needed to improve the quality and accuracy of package labeling by utilizing data and reducing manual processes. Other contributing factors included numerous variations in labeling requirements for individual customers as well as bridging the skills gap at their five manufacturing plants in Idaho, Michigan and Utah. In the previous methods, workers did not have access to a single source of data and had to rely on manual processes. For shipping-box labeling, customer-specific information was manually punched into a kiosk at the end of the

production line and labels were spray coded onto each box. Pillow prints required changing out plates on a system similar to an old-style letter press for proper embossing. This was both time consuming and prone to errors that ultimately drove up costs and limited product distribution. Solutions proposed by printing-equipment manufacturers were costly and inefficient, requiring the creation and maintenance of a combined 900-plus label images and templates, as well as the purchase of additional equipment and software licenses. According to Derek Christensen, senior director of information technology, the company decided to assemble an in-house IT/OT team to define the project’s requirements. Through this collaboration, the team found they were able to build and deploy an affordable print-and-apply labeling system for two forms of packaging by combining capabilities of existing IT and OT systems. Christensen says this plan was also scalable and highly maintainable, taking only five

Convenient location for a leisurely stroll downtown, or to the beautiful Kootenai River. SALE PENDING months to fully implement. The new system utilizes Litehouse’s ERP program to pull customer-specific job data to generate labels that pass through centralized security firewalls as they are sent to the plant printers. Production workers now have the flexibility to edit labels before packaging is complete to ensure accuracy. The implementation of this print-and-apply label system through IT/OT convergence has resulted in overwhelming benefits, not just for Litehouse’s business operations but for employees as well, according to Christensen. With the means to automatically print labels directly on the production line, operator set-up times have decreased from 10 minutes to 10 seconds for every job run. This new smart-manufacturing environment has expanded the company’s sales positioning by giving them the ability to meet the demands of existing customers and gain new ones more effectively.

Immediate cost savings included tens of thousands of dollars in equipment purchases and a 50-percent reduction in software-license fees. Most importantly, the new system created consistency and accuracy that increased Litehouse’s credibility, thereby generating greater product demand by demonstrating their ability to meet exact customer requirements for how the product arrives. Litehouse’s leadership was instrumental in fostering an inclusive environment of open communication that bridged the relationships between IT and OT. Short-term benefits were presented to all stakeholders early in the process to inspire the group. Conscientious management of the team and their tasks resulted in an innovative solution that would positively impact the entire business going forward. Hecla Mining Company Hecla Mining Company’s IT/OT convergence was motivated by their commitment to improving safety while creating efficiencies and reducing costs to stay competitive. Hecla needed the ability to perform mining tasks remotely to enhance the well-being of their workers while increasing productivity. Controlling equipment and related maintenance costs were also vital to achieving business objectives. Brock Tenney, IT operations supervisor, says the convergence team worked together, pulling from their areas of expertise to identify off-theshelf components that were robust enough to handle industrial equipment operations and suitable to the harsh underground environment. Their solution required almost no intervention from IT for deployment, and most importantly, allowed for local decisions underground. Battery-powered distribution points were daisy-chained from Hecla’s existing network with powered fiber cabling throughout the mines to relay data and pull power from their main distribution points. Wireless access points using Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology minimized the number of cables that had to be strung. Hecla can now perform autonomous and tele-remote mining, as well as execute network-based remote blasting from within offices on the surface. Personnel, along with environmental conditions, such as temperature
BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
and gas levels, are monitored in real time, optimizing safety and reducing risks. Equipment is tracked and scheduled for routine maintenance based on actual data to decrease costs and create efficiencies. Tenney, who led the convergence team, believes leadership must be willing to be bold, try new solutions and demonstrate how they can improve work processes to create a global benefit. He says curious people ask questions that can be a catalyst for change. Underground-worker concerns about the level of monitoring were quickly alleviated once they were able to use the tools and see the benefits for themselves. In fact, former employees who stay in touch with Tenney have expressed that without these types of tools and technology at their new jobs, they are less productive and feel less empowered. He also credits the project’s success to setting and managing expectations, along with open communication that promotes an environment of contribution and collaboration to make better products and improve lives. With attrition trends widening the skills gap, businesses must turn to technology and automated processes to grow effectively. IT/OT initiatives, by design, will create new roles that help businesses attract employees, as well as advance and retain current staffing, while driving innovation that encourages economic progress. Inland Northwest Technology Pros Association is making a difference in the IT industry by enabling competitive advantages that act as a cornerstone of economic development in the community. ineteen years ago, Del and Tara Nelson welcomed their son into the world, and their joy soon turned to fear as their baby boy, Bryce, was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, phenylketonuria (PKU). Unable to metabolize the essential amino acid phenylalanine, which is a primary component of all proteins, he has had to adhere to a strict diet made up of a minimal amount of foods that are extremely low in protein (most made by a pharmaceutical company) with over 90 percent of his daily nutrition coming from a medical food formula that he must drink throughout the day. These foods and formulas are costly, and insurance does not cover the vast majority of these necessities. At the time he was born, the condition affected one in 20,000 births. Today, it is now one in 14,000. There are approximately 45 people in the entire state of Idaho living with the condition at varying levels of severity, with Bryce’s diagnoses at the most severe. Tara is the owner of Ash Street Accounting Services, while husband Del operates Ash Street Handyman. Over the years, the couple has worked hard to provide their son the nutritional foods and formulas, special blood tests and travel to meetings with specialists and dieticians for his condition. In 2016, the parents had an idea.

“My very talented husband makes special pieces out of wood or metal in his spare time and, with the intent of finding a way to defray the rising costs of caring for our son, we created the Ash Street Market site on Etsy,” says Tara. Before long, the couple began doing consignments for other local artisans, neighbors and family, clearing out their collections of unique vintage items, art and antiques. They first opened their shop to locals during the 2016 Christmas shopping season, and in 2017 they added an additional storefront online, quickly expanding their exposure. They again were open for business locally for the 2017 Christmas shopping season. With the positive feedback and urging from the community, they are now open year round! “Since we run our other businesses out of this building, and we are here all the time already, we decided to stay open to the public regular hours and just recently completed a remodel of the space, adding a few new artisans and a ton of new items in preparation for the holidays!” Tara says excitedly. “Anyone who has been in before should stop by and see how much we have changed this year—they will be amazed!” At Ash Street Market, shoppers will find locally made handcrafted items, unique vintage, antiques, art, global fair trade artisan items, new items with

TARA HAS BEEN WORKING WITH OTHER PARENTS AND THE NATIONAL PKU ALLIANCE FOR MANY YEARS TO SUPPORT LEGISLATION THAT WOULD REQUIRE INSURANCE COMPANIES IN ALL STATES TO COVER THE retro appeal, gifts, décor and jewelry. Del and Tara strive to curate items out of the ordinary and an eclectic mix where shoppers can find something of quality for each person they shop for. “Although we sell many new items, the heart of our store is that it is an artisan market,” says Tara. “Since we own our building and operate our other businesses from here as well, our overhead for the store is very low. This allows our artisans to retain 75 percent of the sales of their items, and all proceeds from the store go directly to fund our son’s medical costs. We support our artisans and they help us to support our cause, so we all win, including our patrons who find one-of-a-kind gifts for everyone and themselves!” Ash Street Market is a cumulative effort of many people, from family, friends and artisans to complete strangers who have donated items or funds to the Nelsons’ cause. “We appreciate everyone that helps with the store or shops here—they all contribute in their way, even if they don’t know it,” says Tara. The Nelsons invite you to Ash Street Market, where you can shop local and support artisans while contributing to an important cause.

A MUSICAL GIFT TO BONNERS FERRY VICKI BLAKE THOMPSON’S PASSION FOR MUSIC HAS TOUCHED MANY IN OUR COMMUNITY BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS COURTESY OF VICKI BLAKE THOMPSON
S
ince moving to Bonners Ferry in 1992, Vicki Blake Thompson has shared her gift of music for the entire community to enjoy through the many different choirs she has formed and led throughout the years. One of her roles most are familiar with is the community choir, which Vicki conducted for 22 years before stepping down a year ago. “Last Christmas, 2017, was my final Christmas concert for this group, as my husband, Jim Thompson, and I are now spending winters in a warmer climate,” said Vicki, who adds that she isn’t ready to leave it all behind quite yet, saying she plans to put on a spring or fall concert with the choir next year. And although she will be gone during the winter months, she still plans to be involved in music in our area in various roles when she is in town. Among Vicki’s many accomplishments was her role as conductor for Swinging on a Star: The Bonners Ferry Children’s Choir, a position she held for 18 years and from which she retired a couple of years ago. The choir performed many local concerts and was selected for and performed at the Idaho Music Educators’ State Conference in Boise.
BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
“I also conducted the Bonners Ferry High School choirs for seven years,” said Vicki. During this time, Arioso, the Bonners Ferry School honor choir, was selected and performed for a six-state regional music teachers’ convention in Portland. “We were the only choir representing Idaho that year,” shared Vicki of her students’ accomplishment. From 1997 to 2007 Vicki conducted a select community choir, Wild Mountain Thyme. The choir performed many concerts locally as well as throughout the Inland Northwest and was selected for festivals in Austria and Newfoundland, opening the door for some amazing adventures for the group.

Vicki has enjoyed the opportunities to see the world through music, and it is something she will continue to do.
Currently, Vicki conducts Boundless, a select vocal ensemble that was invited and performed in Carnegie Hall in New York City last spring in the festival choir supporting the King’s Singers 50th Anniversary concert. “Boundless presents various theme-based, multi-media performances in Bonners Ferry and in Creston, British Columbia,” said Vicki. “Two of my favorites have been ‘The Elusive Heart’ and ‘Stardust.’” If that isn’t enough, Vicki also conducts Spiritsong, an international touring choir that performed in Iceland for two weeks this past summer. In previous years, the choir has toured across the globe to places that include Ireland, Greece, Costa Rica, China and Tanzania. With Vicki’s departure from the community choir, Bonners Ferry resident Julie McLeish has stepped in to conduct this year’s choir and will be accompanied by Jeff Hunsaker. Their annual Christmas concert is one that brings the community together and welcomes all singers as no auditions are required. “Last Christmas there were about 70 voices,” said Vicki. Choir practices are currently underway Tuesday evenings beginning at 6pm at Trinity
BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
Lutheran Church on Cody Street. Julie has conducted church choirs for many years and, like Vicki, has a deep love of choral music. Jeff holds degrees in music and is someone who Vicki praises as a fabulous pianist and composer. Looking back on a career filled with music, Vicki said what she enjoys most about conducting all the choirs is the community aspect. “I think it is a beautiful microcosm of what a larger community could be,” said Vicki. “Here are 70 people from every imaginable walk of life with totally different political, spiritual and economic perspectives, ages ranging from 12 to 90, and all those differences are put aside as we work together to create moments of great beauty for ourselves and our community. Where else does this happen? It is, unfortunately, a rare but wonderful and powerful experience. We all come with our strengths, our differing gifts and our weaknesses. Together we are so much more than we could ever be individually. I absolutely love seeing this unfold, and, of course, I also simply love choral music and the vulnerability and beauty of the human voice.”

Vicki has enjoyed the opportunities to see the world through music, and it is something she will continue to do. She is leading a small group of singers to Dublin, Ireland, next summer for workshops and performances with Anuna, the choir that was featured in the musical “Riverdance.” Vicki invites anyone interested in this trip to contact her for more information soon. “For this group, one must be a strong individual singer who is capable of learning repertoire on their own, as our rehearsals before departure will be very limited,” she said. Vicki shares her gratitude to her accompanist, Barb Nelson, who she says has been her “right arm” for all the choirs over many years. “None of these groups could have been without her at my side, playing the piano, plunking out parts, filling in when I was gone,” said Vicki. “She has been an utter blessing to all the singers I’ve worked with throughout the years. She also conducted the community choir for 18 years before I started.”
BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
When Barb left Bonners Ferry for five years, that is when Barb talked Vicki into conducting the choir and launched her into a whole second career. “I had always been a dancer/choreographer and actor and theatre director,” said Vicki. “Whoever would have dreamed I’d love conducting so much!” When Barb returned to Bonners Ferry, she became Vicki’s accompanist and now, Vicki said, she could not imagine working without her. “Every conductor should be so lucky to have a woman like Barb to work with.” A heartfelt thank you to Vicki from the community for sharing your gift and passion of music! For more information on this summer’s trip, you can email Vicki at vickiblake1@icloud.com.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO We answer your most asked questions about Botox BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA
A
recent study conducted by Allergan, the pharmaceutical company that produces Botox, found that 100 percent of women, aged 26 to 55, are aware of Botox Cosmetic. It’s pretty fascinating when you think about the fact that every single woman in that age group is aware of a single drug that is used to treat wrinkles. What many of the women in that same group did not know, however, is how the drug works, how much it costs, how long it lasts and what to expect during a Botox treatment. Many women, and men, are surprised to find how simple, quick and easy a Botox treatment is. Below we answer some of the most frequently asked questions. How exactly does Botox work? Botox works by blocking the synapse that sends the message from the nerve to the muscle to contract. Because that communication circuit has been broken, the injected muscle is not able to contract, which in turn causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. Over the next three to four months, new nerve connections are naturally created within the treatment area, and the muscle slowly gets movement back. Are Botox treatments painful? No. A very small needle is used to inject Botox. Many clients find the treatment to be very well tolerated and do not experience any discomfort. A typical treatment only takes a few minutes and involves superficial injections of the Botox into the desired treatment area. Numbing cream can be applied prior to your treatment if discomfort is a concern. How long does Botox last?
return to work immediately. You need to avoid vigorous exercise the day of your treatment, and do not massage your face for eight to 12 hours after your treatment (use very gentle pressure while washing your face). How much does Botox cost? The price of Botox varies from practice to practice. On average Botox is $11 per unit. The amount of Botox a person needs also varies from person to person. Generally, the area between the eyebrows (frown lines) requires 20 units, the forehead 10 to 12 units and the crow’s feet 12 units/side. Men typically need more Botox than women to have the same effect. Botox can also be used in other areas of the face. Consult with your aesthetic provider to discuss other common treatment areas. Is Botox safe? Botox Cosmetic received FDA approval in 2002 and is approved for use in over 75 countries. There have been more than 500 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals, and it is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind. There were over 7 million Botox Cosmetic treatments performed last year alone, and the medical community considers it to be low risk and safe. When done conservatively and dosed appropriately, Botox can help to soften wrinkles and prevent deep lines from forming, without making you look unnatural or frozen. Consult your aesthetic provider to discuss if Botox Cosmetic is right for you, and learn how you can look refreshed, youthful and rested.
Botox takes two to 14 days to become effective and lasts three to four months on average. Many clients find that with continued treatments they can go longer between appointments. Is there any social downtime after Botox injections? No. Most clients leave the office with small bumps at the injection sites, and they go away in 10 to 15 minutes. It is possible that you could get a small bruise, but unlikely. Many clients do their treatment on their lunch break and

HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING MADE
Tips and tricks for the season BY TROY LOUIS CHANDLER
s I hit the snooze button for the umpteenth time, something came over me. A slight chill that was not emitted from the “white noise” fan that I keep on at night to quiet life’s random choir of neighborhood noises. I peered out of my bedroom window and noticed that it was slightly open and that all of the trees outside are naked. It is winter. I shut the window, grabbed my cozy robe, put on a pot of coffee, sat back and let the warmth of holiday cheer take over. This is my favorite time of year as a chef and as a house dad. This is the time for holiday entertaining. Holiday entertaining can be a chaotic and stressful time, but it does not have to be. I have come up with seven holiday tips to guide you through your holiday entertaining.

• Keep It Simple, Go Nuts Most modern grocery stores have amazing bulk food sections. Visit these bulk food aisles to gather various roasted nuts. Mix your holiday bounty and place into a decorative bowl accompanied with a few nut crackers. Stand back and watched your friends and family gather ‘round, cracking and enjoying roasted nuts and talking about this holiday season. This has become wonderful tradition at my house that is easy and inexpensive.
• Mulled Wine I like to keep this holiday libation on the kitchen counter in a crockpot on a low setting just enough to fill the house with holiday “spirit.” As guests come over, they are greeted with a little holiday goodness! Here is an easy recipe that will kick off all of your holiday soirées. Ingredients: 4 cups apple cider 1 bottle of red wine 1/4 cup honey 2 Mexican cinnamon sticks The juice and zest of one orange 4 cloves 3 star anise Method: Place all into a stainless steel or non-reactive pot and bring to just before a boil. Turn down to warm and watch the magic begin.

• Holiday-Themed Movies There is no shortage of great holiday movies out there. I gathered my favorites and put them on an external hard drive so that I can have them play on a loop. You can stream them to your TV from a laptop. My top picks are A Christmas Story, Home Alone, Elf, Christmas Vacation and … It’s a Wonderful Life. • White Elephant Gift Exchange Most of us have experienced this phenomenon at work. But trying it at home is more fun than a bag full of ferrets. Invite your friends and family to join you in your freshly holiday-decorated abode for a new comedy-packed tradition. A fun touch is to add in a ridiculous gift that can be passed on year after year. You can also give awards for best gift, worst gift, funniest gift, etc. A good friend of mine wanted to win the worst gift category so he gave a card that read, “Your gift is a classic car.” The recipient was awarded with an old junker that they had to figure out what to do with. Funny? • Be Cheesy A great way to impress holiday guests is with a cheese platter. This is an easy way to “wow” your friends with little effort. Grab four to five types of cheese. Cut some into cubes, slice some and crumble some. Arrange them on a tray and place strands of grapes for garnish. On a separate tray, arrange various crackers to pair with. Don’t be afraid to throw that weird holiday red almond cheese ball in the mix as a centerpiece. • Potluck Why slave away in the kitchen this year? Let your guests know of the masterpiece that you are going to create and then allow them to create everything that will go with it. So that you don’t end up with 12 types of artichoke dip, make a list of items that you would like your guests to bring. You can create a group email and check items off as your guests accept each challenge. As an added bonus to your genius, you will have a week’s worth of awesome leftovers! • Be Entertained All right, all right, you have been the host of many holiday get-togethers. It just might be time for you to be holiday entertained. It’s time that you finally accept that offer to go to the neighbor’s or a co-worker’s house or … a family member’s house for the holidays. Make your favorite dish, show up and just have a nice time. As a chef, I am going to take this advice, let someone else drive the bus and have a great holiday season. I will see you at your house!

GIVE THE GIFT OF MEMORIES unique gift ideas that last a lifetime and don’t break the budget By Patty Hutchens
T
he Christmas season is a joyful time full of family, fun and joy. But the reality is, that for many, it also brings with it a great deal of stress. “How will I afford to buy all these gifts for the people on my list?” It makes one dread what is supposed to the season of hope. So why not try something new this year? Instead of watching your credit card balance increase over the holiday season, why not think of creative ways to provide a gift to someone on your list that does not cost much—or possibly nothing at all. Purchase just a small gift that also provides an opportunity to spend valuable time with one another. Shared experiences are something that will last a lifetime, unlike toys that will soon be forgotten, or even broken. As adults, how often do we find ourselves “spring cleaning” no matter what time of year. We get tired of the clutter and seek to rid ourselves of
BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
the abundance of things we have in the hope that it will help not only our physical environment but also our emotional well-being. “Cleaning house” externally can help calm us internally. So, the gift of spending time with someone or providing an experience to them makes sense when it comes to gift giving to the adults in our lives. But it is not just adults who benefit from time spent together; shared experiences are important for children, too, as it helps contribute to their psychological development. Those children who spend time sharing experiences with others have been found to have a stronger sense of identity, higher rates of academic success and a greater sense of security. Grandparents and grandchildren who spend time together also can learn a great deal from one another’s generation.

Here are a few suggestions for those who may be on your list this year.

Homemade gift certificates can be a wonderful way to tailor a gift for that special person in your life, whether it is a child or an adult. Make a gift certificate to take that person to their favorite restaurant for some special one-on-one time. This way, the recipient can choose the place and you get the opportunity to share time with that special person. Spending time as a family is something that is increasingly difficult in this day and age. Both parents often work outside the home and kids’ schedules are packed with extra-curricular activities and homework. So, consider giving gifts to your children that can help facilitate a family game night. Buy one game for each child this Christmas and increase your game collection. Then, set aside one night each week to gather as a family and spend time interacting with one another and trying out the new games! Do your children enjoy working with their hands and creating new things? A “craft bucket” full of supplies is a wonderful gift for them (and you!) to explore their creative side. Fill a bucket with scissors, paper, glue, painting kits and more to inspire them. If you are particularly crafty, take the time to teach your child your special skills. For seniors on a fixed income, it may be especially difficult to make ends meet over the holidays. After all, often times they have the largest list of all with children and grandchildren to buy for. Instead of purchasing gifts, why not offer your children the gift of babysitting your grandchildren so your child can enjoy some time with their spouse. And you get to spend that cherished time with your grandchildren as well! Dads. They are frequently much more difficult to buy for, especially when it comes to gifts of experience. Does your dad or husband enjoy a particular hobby? Home beer brewing has become increasingly popular over the last several years, and more and more men (and women) are creating their own concoctions at home. It’s something people can do together, and both can learn a new hobby as well. Visit a local home brew store to investigate what supplies and ingredients are necessary.

advance) and let him know he’ll be enjoying the outdoors again soon enough. Even better, his Christmas gift will carry over into the new year, and he’ll cherish the opportunity to spend time with his family creating memories. Moms are typically much easier to shop for when it comes to giving the gift of an experience. Pampering gifts are especially popular, whether it is a massage, pedicure or simply time alone to soak in a hot bath while Dad takes the kids out for a movie or sweet treat. For a man seeking to give the gift of an experience to his wife, simply planning a date night and making all the arrangements, including the babysitter, will go a long way. Women often are the ones who schedule and plan all the family’s activities, so this will truly be one you want to repeat for special occasions! Whatever you choose to purchase or create for those on your “nice” list this year, it is important to remember the true meaning of Christmas and to carry the spirit of Christmas in your heart all year long!

TRAVEL & LEISURE
Quiet Season on Orcas Island
The perfect antidote to all the holiday commotion STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND
Y
ou know you have stumbled upon a hidden gem when the guests, finding out you are a travel writer, ask you not to write about the location because they don’t want anyone else to discover this special experience. So shhh, don’t tell anyone about the Smuggler’s Villa Resort on Orcas Island; it will be our secret. You will want to visit sooner rather than later as rumors abound on the island about Oprah’s recent extensive real estate purchases on the island. Mike Stolmeier has managed the property for almost 30 years and is also an owner. The resort has individually owned townhouses that are offered as vacation rentals. “We get a lot of regulars. I am now seeing kids who I watched take their first steps now bringing their own kids here. This is a place of firsts—first step, first time swimming or making s’mores. That’s what makes my day here,” he said. “We say we like kids and tolerate adults.” The resort is very family friendly. Quiet season is a special time in the San Juan Islands, and Orcas Island is a perfect location to unwind before or during the holiday season. “Guest coming here love there are no malls. Families will visit to do holiday baking and spend time enjoying each other’s company,” said Stolmeier. “One of the popular things we do each night is our fire pit. Typically there are three shifts which begin at sunset. The first is parents with younger children, followed by families with older kids, and then you will get adults sitting around the fire until 1 or 2 in the morning.”

YOU KNOW YOU HAVE STUMBLED UPON A HIDDEN GEM WHEN THE GUESTS, FINDING OUT YOU ARE A TRAVEL WRITER, ASK YOU NOT TO WRITE ABOUT THE LOCATION BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO DISCOVER THIS SPECIAL EXPERIENCE.
Located on the North Shore of the island, the pebble beach affords breathtaking views of the San Juan Islands, Mount Baker and lovely sunsets. The outdoor swimming pool is unheated but open year round. Many guests try a European spa experience by jumping in the icy water and then getting into the hot tub or sauna. Kids will love the menagerie of animals from parrots and guinea pigs to aquariums. Cuddles, a super friendly bird, greets everyone with a hello when they pass by her cage. The resort also has a marina and kayaking, and fishing charters or whale watching tours are available adjacent to the villas. As the quiet season slips on to Orcas Island, the summer crowds fade away and some businesses close. Make sure to visit the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce website (see The Specifics). Each week they post a “Blast” which gives you a schedule for all the activities taking place on the island, and they also have a listing of what is open. A must see during your visit is the little town of Eastsound with its quaint shops and restaurants. You can walk from Smuggler’s but it is about a mile or so. This time of year it is easy to find parking in town. Stop at Brown Bear Baking for good coffee, fresh pastries and hot-out-of-the-hearth bread— all baked daily. The baking kitchen is open so you can watch the masters at work. With a very friendly staff, you will find yourself a regular during your stay on the island.

Plan to spend a day on the other side of the island. Moran State Park with its pristine lakes and lush forests is the jewel of Orcas Island. It is much larger than you would expect and is actually the fourth largest state park in Washington. Drive up to the top of Mount Constitution, which rises nearly a half mile above Orcas Island, or plan to park and hike up. There are a couple of options for shorter or longer hikes. At the top of the mountain is a watch tower, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. From the top of the tower is the best view of the San Juan Islands. Locals call it one of the top water views in the world. Although that is not verifiable, it is pretty incredible. On a clear day you can see Mount Baker and Mount Rainier and all the way into Canada. After spending time in the park you are sure to have worked up an appetite. The Rosario Resort is not far away and is a beautiful location to enjoy a late lunch at the Mansion Restaurant. (Note this time of year lunch is only Friday through Sunday.) The restaurant is in the historic Moran Mansion in what was once the veranda overlooking Cascade Bay. The hotel also has a free museum with information about the historic mansion and the Moran family. A former mayor of Seattle and a shipbuilder, Robert Moran donated much of the land, which became Moran State Park, to the State of Washington.
The Specifics GETTING THERE For peace of mind, make a ferry reservation and note that you will need to make a westbound and eastbound reservation. Make sure to arrive 30 minutes prior to departure or you will lose your reservation. TakeaFerry.com

Quiet season is a special time in the San Juan Islands If you are lucky enough to visit on a Saturday, you can experience the unique performance by musician Christopher Peacock. He regales the audience with tales of the mansion’s history interspersed with musical interludes on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano and the 1914 Aeolian organ with 1972 pipes and a slide show of historic photos. The grand finale is the original silent film version of “The Phantom of the Opera” featuring Lon Chaney in the title role. The silent movie is accompanied by Peacock on the organ. It is mesmerizing. The presentation is free and takes place at 4pm on Saturdays. The San Juan Islands Scenic Byway has a portion on Orcas Island. This is a great way to explore and points out all the highlights of the island. The self-guided drive begins at the Orcas Island ferry landing in the cute little Orcas Village. There is an eclectic market with upscale groceries, a few shops and Boathouse Ciderworks. It will take two to three hours to drive around the island. The byway will take you through small hamlets and

scenic bays. The views really open up this time of year after the fall foliage is gone. Deer Harbor has a nice public sandy beach which is worth a visit. For more information on the byway, check out the Visit San Juan Islands website (See The Specifics). Orcas Island really shines in the quiet season where one can relax and unwind without the crowds of the summer. Winter weather is very mild with average temperatures of 46 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit and a lot less rain than the mainland—in December you are likely to see a sunny day during your visit! After touring the island, enjoy some downtime at the Smuggler’s Villa Resort. Disconnect from technology and reconnect with your family or friends. Stroll the quiet beach or take a private charter with Outer Island Excursions located on site. You can schedule a fishing charter or go see some of the lighthouses from the water. Bundle up, throw some steaks on the grill and enjoy the views from your deck.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS DEC
31 Out with the Old, In with the New Ring in 2019 at The Pearl Theater By Patty Hutchens | Photo courtesy of The Pearl Theater
It’s a Bonners Ferry tradition that keeps people coming back year after year. This year’s New Year’s Eve party at The Pearl Theater will have a new format and will feature the Back Adit Band. The group’s mix of strings, woodwinds, percussion and harmonies blend to form an entertaining mix of swing, eclectic fold and jazz. “This unique group plays throughout the Pacific Northwest and offers a distinctive sound with instruments ranging from banjo to electric mandolin and saxophone,” said Val Thompson of The Pearl Theater. “It’s perfect party music!” The doors open at 6pm, and this group rings in the New Year at 9pm, midnight on the East Coast, offering party goers plenty of time to attend another New Year’s Eve celebration or turn in early as the case may be. There will be a no-host bar, and the café will be open as well. According to Val, there have been a number of requests for live music at the annual New Year’s Eve party, and they are looking forward to being able to fulfill that request with such a great band. “The lower ticket price this year ($15) will give back to our patrons more than asking more from them,” said Val of the opportunity to make it more affordable for everyone. “We love our audiences and appreciate the community members who support our endeavors with their constant support, sponsorship and membership.” Val shared that there will definitely be a dance contest for those who hope to participate. “Dress code is Bonners Ferry Chic, which pretty much means anything from yoga pants to costumes to formalwear. Nobody cares what you wear to The Pearl—with the exception of birthday suits, which should be reserved for other venues,” joked Val. Cost of admission is $15 and is open to those 16 years of age and older. Tickets can be purchased at Mountain Mike’s and Bonners Books. You can also purchase tickets at the door, by calling 208.610.2864 or logging onto ThePearlTheater.org.

Very private Approx. 33.74 acre parcel with both field and timber. The draw on the west side of property makes for a great animal habitat as well as a great buffer for privacy. This parcel is approx. 3 miles from Bonners Ferry City Limits and has lots of wildlife that frequent the property. Come check this out. There are not many parcels like this still available. This really is a special parcel with lots of privacy. Seller says this cannot be split into more than two parcels. NNA Elderberry
