NEED HOME IMPROVEMENT MOTIVATION? TAX BREAK MAY HELP The “fiscal cliff” was averted, but what does this mean to homeowners? The answer: a lot. The bill, signed into affect on Jan. 2, restricts tax rates from increasing and, among other things, reinstates and extends tax credits for qualifying energy-efficient home upgrades between Jan. 1, 2012 through Dec. 31, 2013. Homeowners can earn up to $500 in tax credits with the purchase and installation of qualifying products. “Now is an ideal time to check off some of those home improvement ‘to do’ items,” said Trey Hoffman, global product manager at Rinnai. “In addition to the tax break, homeowners reap the benefits of these energy-efficient upgrades for years, as these products can help reduce monthly utility bills.” What qualifies as an energy-efficient upgrade? All products must meet certain efficiency criteria to qualify. A licensed contractor, builder or remodeler can help homeowners select eligible products, such as: • Insulation materials, which help keep a house warm in the winter and cool in the summer, qualify if they meet 2009 International Energy Conservation Code requirements. The credit value is 10 percent of insulation material cost. • Exterior windows and skylights, if Energy Star-rated, can reduce homeowner energy bills seven to 15 percent. A 10 percent credit can be earned when homeowners select Energy Star-qualified windows. • A Tankless Water Heater can save homeowners up to 40 percent on their monthly energy bills. Qualifying tankless water

THICK ‘n’ THIN Beams & Flooring

heaters, such as those manufactured by Rinnai, have an Energy Factor (EF) of at least .82. A $300 credit is available to homeowners opting for a more efficient way to heat water. “Homeowners don’t always have to sacrifice luxury, aesthetics and comfort when upgrading to energy-efficient products. This is especially the case with tankless water heaters,” added Hoffman. “Tankless technology affords homeowners the ability to enjoy endless hot water, while saving energy. The product’s long lifespan -- nearly two decades -- gives homeowners peace of mind knowing they’ve selected an energy-efficient product that will pay them back month after month for years to come.” What documentation is needed to earn the tax credit? Homeowners need to file IRS Form 5695 with their taxes. They also need to keep receipts proving when the equipment was purchased and a copy of the manufacturer’s certification. Accountants and tax advisors can provide additional guidance. For more info on receiving the tax credit for a tankless water heater, visit www.rinnai.us/tankless-tax-credit.

Healthy Living

Stop Resisting the Iron ARTICLE BY JULIE A. SMITH OF ENTIRELY NATURAL, LLC

W

as your New Year’s Resolution to lose weight? Incorporating Resistance Training to your exercise plan may give you the added push you need to make that Resolution a REALITY. If you are a female don’t worry about gaining too much bulk. Women don’t produce as much testosterone as men so it’s impossible for woman to gain huge amounts of muscle mass. Resistance training increases the strength of your bones, muscles and connective tissue which helps you decrease your risk of injury. Since most adults lose about one-half pound of muscle per year after age 30 you can use resistance training to increase your muscle mass. This will help you burn more calories too since muscle tissue is partly responsible for the number of calories your body burns while at rest. Building muscle can also improve your quality of life by making every day chores easier. Hiring a Personal Trainer is a great way to help you get familiar with the iron. I recommend this to anyone who is serious about adding a resistance training routine to their workout. A trainer can help educate you on proper form and techniques thereby helping you avoid injury. If you can’t afford a Personal Trainer there are many books and online articles that can help you create your own program. You can get free workout plans and a lot of great information about exercising and resistance training at www.ace-fitness.org. One of the most common mistakes people make when starting to weight train is that they do cardio before weights. What is wrong with this? When you perform cardio first you deplete the stores of glucose and glycogen that the muscles need to fuel your weight lifting program. So, flip the order

...the right choice for home

and you will see better results but limit your after weight lifting cardio to an easy walk for a maximum of 25 minutes so that you stay in the fat burning zone. Another mistake people make is not adding enough resistance. Chose a weight where you can do12-15 reps before your muscles can no longer perform the exercise. Complete 3 sets of each exercise alternating muscle groups on different days. Once you can easily do 15 reps increase your weight load. You don’t need to have a set of weights in the basement, fancy equipment, or a gym membership to start a resistance training program. Your body weight will suffice until you work up to needing more resistance. For example, push-ups, pull ups and wall squats can be done without weights. If you are looking at jump starting your weight loss efforts or everyday chores are harder to complete add resistance training to your exercise program. Need help getting motivated? Bonners Ferry offers a wide array of exercises classes and options from Yoga to Zumba. There are also quite a few qualified Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers (myself included) in the area to help you stick to your New Year’s Resolution. So, Get Moving and Stay Strong! Julie A. Smith is owner of Entirely Natural, LLC Professional Health Coaching, holds a BS in Nutrition Science and is an ACE-Certified Personal Trainer. She can be reached at 208.255.9956.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

D

id you know Medicare has a rating system that evaluates health plans based on dozens of quality measures and patient experiences? Very few plans receive the top Medicare rating. Out of 563 Medicare Advantage plans for 2013, only 11 plans with prescription drug benefits earned the top five-star rating. Six of those 11 were Kaiser Permanente plans. “We are a top plan because we focus on our patients’ health,” said Jed Weissberg, senior vice president for Hospitals, Quality and Care Delivery at Kaiser Permanente. “We help our patients to exercise, eat well, maintain a healthy weight and get regular check-ups. Walking, for example, can have remarkable therapeutic value -cutting the rate of new cases of diabetes by half or more.” Part of staying healthy is having a health plan that covers all of your medical needs. For seniors selecting a Medicare plan, this means finding one that has the right doctor and provides the care, treatment and pharmacy benefits you need. To help Medicare-eligible beneficiaries select a high-quality plan, Kaiser Permanente offers four tips. 1. Know your health plan’s star quality rating. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services assign an overall star rating to each Medicare plan for how well

it performs. The Medicare ratings range from one star (lowest rating) to five stars (highest rating). The system rates plans on preventive care, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service and pharmacy care. 2. Use the Medicare ratings to find a quality plan. The highest-rated plans feature well-coordinated, patientcentered care. When seniors suffer from chronic illness or require hospitalization, high-quality plans initiate best practices and treatment to deliver excellent follow-up care. 3. Look for customer service and responsiveness to your needs. The very best health care plans give patients support systems that include making online appointments, getting lab results electronically and providing secure email to their doctors. 4. Seniors can choose 5-star excellence almost any time of year through Medicare’s Special Enrollment Period. Seniors who become eligible for Medicare as they turn 65 should enroll during the three-month period prior to and after their 65th birthday. After this initial enrollment period, they may be subject to higher premiums or late penalties if there has been a gap in their coverage. To find out the latest 2013 ratings, visit www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan. Plan performance summary star ratings are assessed each year by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and may change from one year to the next.
