Nothing says “home” like aging in your own home. Obtaining the services needed to do this is the key to “aging better” and safely at home. Our knowledgeable caregivers provide services that disabled children, disabled adults and the elderly need to continue to stay independently and safely in their own homes. Home care services are often the answer families have been looking for to keep loved ones at home rather than placing them in nursing homes. AAging Better has been serving the Greater Sandpoint area communities with local well-trained and compassionate caregivers for the past 14 years. We’re here to assist those needed in-home care now or in the future. For further information on Local home| care or about AAging Better, please go to our website at www.aagingbetter.com 2 Bonners Ferry Living www.bonnersferryliving.com

Overcoming Defeat Goodwill partnering for success Article courtesy of Goodwill DEFEAT: (N) - FAILURE TO WIN OR TO REALIZE A GOAL. Most people have experienced defeat at one point in life. We usually think of defeat in terms of a game or sporting event. But for many people in today’s world, defeat is not a trivial sporting experience. Life has become an experience of defeat. Defeat on the job. Defeat in relationships. Defeat in court. Defeat in school. Life just doesn’t seem to be handing out victories. It is people like this that Goodwill is helping each and every day. Goodwill works with men and women of all ages and backgrounds, helping them gain needed skills, connect to resources in the community, helping build their resumes and interview skills, providing budgeting training, and much more. Our mission and goal is to help people in the Inland Northwest
gain independence, confidence, and pride. We partner with them, supporting them as they find victory. Here is just one of many success stories we experience every day at Goodwill. Tina came to Goodwill’s Working Solutions office in Coeur d’ Alene with a heavy heart and many obstacles to overcome. After recently losing her husband, Tina felt overwhelmed and unsure of her future. Tina had not worked outside of the home in many years. Despite all of this, she still had a positive attitude and a drive to improve her family’s situation. One of Tina’s biggest obstacles was the fact that she had not completed high school and did not have her GED, which was an obstacle to employment. She didn’t know how to

take on this challenge. Her Case Manager at Goodwill directed Tina to the Adult Basic Education Program at North Idaho College. Tina enrolled in classes to prepare for her GED. In addition to her GED classes, Tina worked intensely with Goodwill’s Beyond Jobs Career Coordinator to update her computer skills. “In the last 6 months, we have noticed a considerable change in Tina’s self-confidence, courage, and growth, both personally and professionally,” says Sarah Line, Tina’s Case Manager at Goodwill Working Solutions. “When it would’ve been easier for Tina to give up, she continued to persevere and grow before our eyes.” In mid-April, Tina came into the Working Solutions office and proudly announced that she had passed her GED exam with flying

colors! She invited her Case Manager and Career Coordinator, partners in her journey to success, to her graduation ceremony. Tina was beaming with pride, as were her Case Managers. Tina’s journey does not stop here. She was recently hired by Corum Associates, where she is working full time. “It has been such a joy to celebrate Tina’s success. We are all celebrating this milestone with her,” comments Line. Goodwill’s Working Solutions staff continues to work with Tina, as they do with all participants, to assist with her transition into her new employment, and insure that her success continues.

Calling All Journalists! Writers and photographers, explore your creative side By Patty Hutchens
ARE YOU A WRITER WANTING TO SHARE news of a community event, a Bonners Ferry resident’s accomplishment or just a “feel good” story? A photographer eager to have your photos come to life in the context of an article? Bonners Ferry Living wants to hear from you. As a community publication, we strive to bring the residents of Bonners Ferry all of the great things that are happening in this town. Whether it is a heart-warming story about your friends, family or colleagues or an informative piece about Boundary County, we want to share it all with you. Over the course of the last several months our readers have been privileged to read stories written by Bonners Ferry High School students about their accomplishments, both academic and athletic. You have embraced the stories, and the response has encouraged us to expand our contributing authors beyond the walls of the schools and out into the community. Beginning with this issue, you will notice a different format of Bonners Ferry Living. We are including a Good News section with each publication that will highlight people, organizations, businesses and more that are making a difference in the community and beyond. From time to time we will also highlight a local business, sharing with you their specialty, contributions to the community and the real story behind those who own and operate them. Our community section will continue to highlight our high school students as well as events taking place in Bonners Ferry, such as the upcoming Relay for Life. With so much going on in this small community, we want to be sure we cover as much as possible. And the truth is that no one knows the Bonners Ferry community better than its residents. For that reason, we are encouraging anyone who is interested in being a contributor to Bonners Ferry Living to share with us your interest by providing us with a sample of a story 8 Bonners Ferry Living Local | www.bonnersferryliving.com

What is FIRST Robotics? Inspiring future scientists
By Maggie McCoy, Derek Reynolds, & Joe Sher | Photos by Maggie McCoy
FIRST (FOR INSPIRATION AND RECOGNITION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY) ROBOTICS is an international high school competition founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen that combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. With strict rules and limited resources, teams are challenged to raise money, design a team “brand”, hone their teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform certain tasks against a field of competitors. This is as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer mentors from the community also lend their time and talent to teach and guide each team. In FIRST Robotics, students have the opportunity to: • Build and compete with a robot of their own design • Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments • Qualify for over $16 million in college scholarships • Learn from professional engineers • Learn and use sophisticated software
and hardware • Earn a place in the FIRST World Championship The FIRST vision is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders. By engaging them in exciting programs that build science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills, they can inspire innovation and foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. One of the main themes of FIRST is gracious professionalism, defined here by FIRST National Advisor Woodie Flowers, “Competition for the sake not of destroying one another, but for the sake of bettering and improving both competitors as a result of the competition.”. With gracious professionalism, people can learn to compete with passion, yet still respect each other and treat one another with kindness in the process. FIRST also allows young people to take part in journalism in order to promote their team and fundraise money. Many, if not all teams maintain a business subdivision to write awards submissions and news articles. Along with writing, some of the young
12 Bonners Ferry Living Local | www.bonnersferryliving.com
people will go to businesses to gain sponsors. Business team members give the team the chance to obtain awards through writing the Chairman’s Award, the Woodie Flowers Award, and the Entrepreneurship Award. The Chairman’s Award is an award given to the team that presents the best model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST. This means spreading the word of FIRST through demonstrations and helping start new FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition), FTC (FIRST Tech Competition), and FLL (FIRST Lego League) teams. Teams document these acts through a 1-3 minute video and a roughly four page written essay. This essay and video highlight the team’s efforts in spreading the word of FIRST. The Woodie Flowers Award was created to recognize and celebrate mentors that best leads, inspires, and empowers the team using excellent communication skills. This award recognizes only one outstanding mentor each year. One mentor is presented with the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award at each regional, and the winners of that are entered in the final Woodie Flowers Award, presented at the Championships the next year.
For the Entrepreneurship Award, we submit a business plan, detailing many of the more logistical sides of the team, explaining our mission statement, team origin, organizational structure, relationships with each other and our community, deployment of resources, future plans, financial statement, and a risk mitigation plan. This allows the more administrative team members a place to organize something for the team. Our team is subdivided into several smaller teams that focus on specific tasks, in order to have a successful FIRST season. These are the subdivided teams we have:
Finely crafted log structures in North Idaho’s Kootenai River Valley! Looking for space for that birthday party, wedding, reception, or family reunion? We have the space you need in our gorgeous handcrafted Caribou Creek Log Lodge! Packages starting at $250. *Catering not included, but outside caterers welcome!
The business team works with various software to create beautifully worded letters and essays. The letters are then sent out to potential sponsors in the hopes of earning support as well as to thank those who have sponsored us. Many of the essays are crafted to apply for the awards that are offered through FIRST. The business team also includes the video and photo crew which creates the videos that go with some of the awards.

The design team finalizes the blueprint for the robot. They draw the robot using AutoCad, which is then used as a guide for building the robot out of physical materials.
Are YOU Online?!
The build team builds the robot. They prototype the initial design of the robot, assess the pros and cons of the design and use that information to build the final robot. They use a variety of power tools and other building utensils to cut aluminum that is used for the frame of the robot. They also learn how to cut and bend lexan that is used as shielding to protect the delicate electrical board inside of the robot.
Do you WANT to be?
The electrical team manages the wiring of the robot. They ensure that the robot will function as planned and that everything is wired correctly. It is very important for them to keep the wiring organized to prevent malfunctions. The programming team creates the code that will operate the robot. Multiple programs are used to write the optimal code for the operation of the robot during the competition. Programmers write the code that controls the robot during the autonomous period (the driver cannot touch the controls during this period). Community rallies around teen injured in accident By Patty Hutchens
Lewiston
Livestock Market Where your cattle always bring more.
FEBRUARY 8TH STARTED OUT as a great day for the Bonners Ferry Cheerleading team. They were in Moscow to compete at the District Cheerleading competition. They won and were elated to be moving onto the State competition in March. But their joy quickly turned to sorrow when one of their teammates, 18-year-old Kelsey Shutes, was seriously injured in a car accident. Following the collision on Highway 95, Kelsey was airlifted to Kootenai Medical Center. As of publication of this story, she remains there but reports are she is improving every day.

The community is hopeful and is doing all it can to show its support. And if love, prayers and well wishes alone can heal, there is no doubt Kelsey will make a full recovery. The Pray for Kelsey Facebook page alone has nearly 3,000 “likes,” – a strong statement of how this accident has affected a community of only 2600 people. As in many situations like these, people are eager to help but not sure what to do. Along with providing emotional support, financial support can at the very least ease some of the family’s stress.

Whole Body Vibration Great benefits of whole body vibration
By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Trainer, FAST Program Director at PneuThera
QUICK TIP
WOULD YOU LIKE TO LOSE WEIGHT? Become a more explosive athlete? Reduce symptoms of depression? Increase your bone density? Improve your balance? Current studies on whole body vibration are telling us you can do exactly that as well as gain a host of other beneficial attributes. And this technology is readily available to you in Sandpoint! Vibration as a therapy was first used on Russian cosmonauts in an effort to decrease the loss of muscle and bone mass in space. As
the benefits of vibration use became apparent, the Soviet Union began using this technology to train their athletes with much success. With the fall of the Iron Curtain, vibration technology made its way to the United States. Initially used in the fitness industry, vibration quickly became known for its benefits in physical therapy, rehabilitation, and wellness applications. Individuals who cannot participate in traditional exercise programs can gain benefit from low-impact vibration training.
16 Bonners Ferry Living Local | www.bonnersferryliving.com
Whether lying, standing or sitting, exercising using resistance bands, weights, or your own body weight, vibration initiates physiological reactions unique to its technology. It produces a stretch reflex that causes involuntary muscle contractions to occur. Healing and repair hormones increase, blood circulation improves, bones are strengthened, lymph drainage improves, and the basal metabolic rate improves. The results are increased strength, speed, and stamina, rapid recovery of muscles and tissue, increased flexibility, mobility and coordination, improved
With all these benefits to gain, it is important we realize all vibration platforms are not the same and will not produce equal results. You will need more than the commonly used center pivot or vertical vibration plate technology for ultimate outcomes. A multi-planar unit that allows for training at multiple frequencies simultaneously is currently your best option. Additionally, the training parameters used are equally important. Amplitude; the extent of vertical displacement, Frequency; the number of impulses delivered per second, Magnitude; the acceleration power/force of the movement, and Duration; the amount of time one spends on the unit will all affect the results. New research out of Norway and Oregon State University are starting to point out the fallacy of exclusively training at lower frequencies for optimum outcomes. There
are reports from professional and local athletes claiming the increased training effects of 25% utilizing single plane vibration and an additional 25% when using the newest model of vibration platform, a tri-planar system. Hundreds of studies have been published on vibration and the number of studies conducted every year is accelerating. Current studies in the Northwest show 100% success in treating individuals with Diabetic Neuropathy. Vibration is an important training and rehabilitative tool that will definitely benefit you. Whether you are an athlete looking to up your game, an individual with physical challenges or pain, or just the average guy wanting more from your exercise program, vibration is for you. Get the benefits! For more information on vibration contact Lisa Paull at 290.7996 or Vibration studies on the web - www.pneuthera.com/studies

All or Nothing
A word of advice from Dr. Seuss By Dr. Joe Tessendorf AS A PARENT OF TWO YOUNG CHILDREN, I read nightly to my daughters. One evening I came across a quote that resonated with me then and has stuck with me since; “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.” The doctor who wrote these words was Dr. Seuss. Think about that for a moment, is it true or not true? Apply it to your everyday life, and you will find more times than not it is. How many decisions do we make in a day? How many of these decisions impact your health? Virtually every decision you make pushes you closer to health or sickness. You are the one responsible, and the one who has to care a whole awful lot. I will show you how health is not all or nothing and how being the one responsible is empowering. Ask a ten year old if an apple or donut is better for them. They know the apple is the right choice. Ask them if exercise is better than no exercise or water better than soda. How come we don’t regularly make the healthier choice? It’s not because we don’t understand which is better; it’s that it’s not entirely clear the devastation that these poor
choices have on us. How big of a difference does one apple or donut truly have? Not much in a day, but how about over a year or a lifetime? Small decisions and choices add up to make big differences. Think about your last checkup, physical, or yearly exam. What was measured? Weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, along with a host of other things. Did your values indicate a picture of your health at that exact moment in time or an ongoing movie of the direction your health is heading? It is irrelevant what type of practitioner measured the values, M.D., D.O., D.C., N.P., you get the point. Let’s say I have normal values but eat fast food twice a day, don’t exercise and have a terrible social structure. Do you think I’m headed towards sickness or health? Quite obviously I will eventually become sick, but at what point do my “measurable values” indicate this? Waiting until a symptom arises or value is elevated is like building a boat after the flood. If normal measured values indicate we are healthy at that exact point, great! But these
18 Bonners Ferry Living Local | www.bonnersferryliving.com
values give no indication if your daily lifestyle choices are directing you towards health or illness. We at Tessendorf Family Chiropractic offer a different approach, the “Health Risk Assessment.” An assessment that includes the physiological stressors, lifestyle stress load, physical quality of life, and psychosocial quality of life and lumps it into a detailed breakdown specifically for you. Not only does it give us a snapshot in time of you current health, but also we have the “ongoing movie” of where your health is heading. Even if you’re asymptomatic, undiagnosed, or have normal values, we are able to predict future health risk! Think of the impact this will have on prevention. We want you to understand that if you eat a donut and an apple, you’re healthier than if you only had the donut. Understand that we don’t develop health or chronic illness in a week. Understand we are all in a race. It’s not a sprint - it’s a marathon called life. Understand health is in your hands, and it’s your greatest asset. Understand that just as Dr. Seuss wants you to care a whole awful lot, so do we! The tools we utilize are to empower you to be the best parent, spouse, coworker, and individual you can be. If you or a loved one is interested in what direction your health is headed, call us. We don’t up sell care (contracts), we want you to have a BETTER life, and the primary focus is outcomes. Remember health is NOT all or nothing. Lastly, pick up a book by Dr. Seuss from time to time, it will put a smile on your face regardless of your age.

FOR THE FIRST TIME, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is being held in Bonners Ferry this summer on August 22.
The event begins with an opening ceremony and a survivor lap. The survivor lap is when all cancer survivors make the first lap around the track.
Relay for Life is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. The overnight event symbolizes that cancer doesn’t sleep as teams walk around a track all night long.
Relay for Life raises money to help prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from the disease on a local and national level. In 2012, 82 patients from Boundary and Bonner County received services through the American Cancer Society.
Bonners Ferry’s Relay for Life is planned to begin at 6pm on Friday, August 22 at the Bonners Ferry High School track and conclude at 6am on Saturday, August 23. Teams will camp out at the track and have a team member on the track at all times during the event - because cancer never sleeps. The track will be lined with lighted luminaria candles in white paper bags) to remember those lost to cancer, those fighting cancer and those who have fought cancer and won.
The goals for Bonners Ferry’s first Relay for Life are to raise $25,000, have 15 teams present and 40 survivors participate in the survivor lap. The next Relay for Life meeting is on Thursday, February 27 at 6pm at Riverside Auto Center. For more information on Relay for Life, visit www.relayforlife.org/ bonnersferryid or visit the local Facebook page under Bonners Ferry Relay for Life.

Much to their relief she smiled and said, “Well, you missed a test today so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper.” Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said: “First Question: Which tire was flat?”
