Six New Year’s Resolutions We Can All Keep!

We Set the Standard!

WE ALL DO IT. We set our resolutions each year and many of us work diligently to accomplish them. I love the feeling of starting over fresh and new each year. Some of us are great at sticking to the plan, while most of us usually fall back into our old habits. So this year we at Living Local set out to change that by coming up with some easy, yet powerful, resolutions that we all can keep. By taking the focus off of ourselves and putting it on others, we feel these resolutions will have a bigger impact on our own lives. Month 1. Reach out to someone close to you and let them know how much they mean to you. A simple text, phone call or even message sent on Facebook will do! This simple gesture will impact you more than you know. Month 2. When ordering your coffee or food at your favorite place, greet the person behind the counter with “good morning or afternoon, how is your day going?” prior to ordering. Try not to rush right into your order. Be thoughtful and polite with a smile on your face. Month 3. Pick your favorite LOCAL charity and donate $25 or more, or whatever you can spare. We most likely spend a lot more than this on things we don’t need. Although it may not seem like a lot, $25 can help tremendously. Month 4. Meet a friend for coffee, lunch or happy hour and turn your phone off, pay attention and engage. Month 5. Post a “positive” story on social media. Can we change social media and the negativity that is associated with it? Everyone try posting and engaging in positive things; you will feel much better about society, guaranteed! Month 6. Be positive, optimistic and say thank you to those around you at work or home. Be determined to lead with grace. These simple yet powerful gestures can change a culture and make a difference. They say it takes about 22 days to break an old habit or create a new one. Don’t wait another month, week or day to start. Continue these six simple yet effective positive gestures each month, all aimed at doing something positive for someone else. You will see not only the difference it makes in their lives but the profound change it makes in yours. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

Tomorrow’s Leaders

NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, government agencies, church congregations and retirees are what we often think of when we hear about people helping out and giving back to the community. In Bonners Ferry all these groups do their part and so does another group that doesn’t even have their driver’s licenses. Middle school students taking part in the leadership class at Boundary County Middle School focus many of their projects on helping and improving the greater Bonners Ferry area. The elective course taught by Kelly Hinthorn includes kids from sixth to eighth grade and has become so popular that there is always a waiting list to get in. The course teaches kids how to be effective leaders, accomplish goals and projects from idea to completion, and allows them to get creative in fundraising efforts.

Local middle school students giving back to community By Colin Anderson

A recent challenge from the superintendent pit the middle school leadership class up against the high school Future Farmers of America (FFA) program in an effort to see who could donate more hams and turkeys to those in need this holiday season.

Good News

“The kids know I’m competitive, and I’ve had most of the high school kids in class before so they know too,” said Hinthorn. Leading up the FFA group was Julie Smith whom Hinthorn has known since they attended high school together. In order to beat the older kids, the leadership class knew they would have to get creative. While hats aren’t typically allowed on school days, the class was able to convince the administration to allow them to be worn for a day at the cost of $1 per student. “We raised around $300 that day that all went towards purchasing turkeys,” said Hinthorn. The middle school class also participated in the annual Jolly Jars event. Each student in the class decorated a mason jar to their liking. They then placed candy, hot chocolate mix and other goodies inside and students all over the school purchased raffle tickets to try and win their favorite one. Hinthorn even upped the stakes a bit, offering 10 free raffle tickets to anyone who donated a turkey or ham to the competition. Through the raffle, students were able to raise an additional $500. The competition got to the point that Smith’s seventh-grade son chose to donate a ham to the middle school team instead of his mother’s. “She was pretty upset and was going to be really bummed if they ended up losing by one,” laughed Hinthorn. Local grocers offered a discount, and once the final donations were calculated the score was 82 to 56 with the leadership team coming out on top. In keeping the spirit of the friendly competition, members from the FFA group took the final step of gathering all of the ham

and turkey donations and delivering them to the Ministerial Association. Despite a blinding snow storm, the bus made it to its final destination and the teens helped put together Christmas dinner baskets featuring the main course as well as side dishes for those who might otherwise not be able to afford it. While beating a group of older kids is certainly rewarding, Hinthorn feels the competition was another great reminder of what leadership in the community is all about. “I think they realized that giving back to others feels really good. We’re constantly trying to do projects to give back without expecting anything in return.”

General and Family Dentistry Hank Willis, DDS “Gentle Dental Care for the Entire Family”

As we get into a new year, the leadership class is already planning its next projects. They are currently working on an assembly presentation on human rights and anti-bullying which they will present to the entire school. In March, classrooms are given a team in the NCAA basketball tournament to root for. They do research about the university, its academic programs and tuition rates. Doors to the classroom are decorated in elaborate style, and kids really get into cheering on their team. There’s also a secondary message tied into the college spirit week. “This really gets them thinking about higher education and telling them yes, you can go to college even if you’re the first in your family to do so,” said Hinthorn. Leadership class is also responsible for daily routine around the school. Students handle morning announcements, work the doors to let their peers in each day, keep the bulletin boards up to date, tackle the citizen of the month program and organize pep rallies among other obligations. “Middle school kids often get a bad rap, but these are truly good kids who have a lot to offer, and this is a really positive thing for our school and our community,” said Hinthorn.

Enhance Your Look Today

From penny drives that go to benefit veterans to raising scholarship money through lap running in memory of a fallen little brother, these kids are truly making an impact in the community. This Christmas dinner competition will be back again, and you can believe Smith and Hinthorn will be ready for an even more competitive second season. Young people turn very quickly into tomorrow’s leaders, and it’s great to know that there are so many committed to this community and making it a better place for all.

ESSENTIALS This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Kevin Callos

FINANCIAL FOCUS TRY TO OVERCOME “ROADBLOCKS” TO A COMFORTABLE RETIREMENT

IN YOUR LIFE, YOU will want to take many journeys. Some are physical—perhaps you’ll finally visit the French Riviera or the Caribbean. Others involve personal growth—one day, you’ll finally become fluent in that foreign language you’ve been studying. But of all the destinations you can identify, few will be as important as retirement—specifically, a comfortable retirement. And that’s why it’s so important to consider the “roadblocks” you might encounter on your road to the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Here are five of the most common obstacles: • Insufficient investments – Very few of us have ever reported investing “too much” for our retirement. But a great many people regret that they saved and invested too little. Don’t make that mistake. Contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, and increase your

You’ve Spent a Lifetime Preparing for Retirement.

contributions whenever your salary goes up. Even if you do participate in your retirement plan at work, you may also still be eligible to fund an IRA, so take advantage of that opportunity, too. And always look for other ways to cut expenses and direct this “found” money toward your retirement. • Underestimating your longevity – You can’t predict how long you’ll live, but you can make some reasonable guesses—and you might be surprised at your prospects. According to the Social Security Administration, men reaching age 65 today can expect to live, on average, until age 84.3, while women turning age 65 today can anticipate living, on average, until age 86.6. That’s a lot of years—and you’ll need to plan for them when you create longterm saving, investing and spending strategies. • Not establishing a suitable withdrawal rate – Once you are retired, you will likely need to start withdrawing money from your 401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts. It’s essential that you don’t withdraw too much each year—obviously, you don’t want to run the risk of outliving your resources. That’s why you need to establish an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your situation, incorporating variables such as your age, the value of your retirement accounts, your estimated lifestyle expenses and so on. Calculating such a withdrawal rate can be challenging, so you may want

to consult with a professional financial advisor. • Taking Social Security at the wrong time – You can start taking Social Security as early as age 62, but your checks will be bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which will probably be 66 or 67, or when your payments “max out” at 70. You might not be able to afford to wait until then, but by postponing the date you begin taking withdrawals, you could help yourself considerably. • Ignoring inflation – It’s been low in recent years, but inflation hasn’t disappeared, and it could rise at exactly the wrong time —when you’re retired. That’s why you’ll want your portfolio to include some investments with the potential to outpace inflation, even during your retirement years.

Now What? If you’re recently retired or planning to retire, you’re probably concerned about making the right financial decisions. Together, we can find the answers. We’ll sit down, face to face, to develop a strategy designed to help your finances meet your needs over the long haul.

To develop a retirement income strategy that works for you, call or visit today.

By being aware of these roadblocks and taking steps to overcome them, you can help smooth your journey toward retirement— and once you get there, you may enjoy it more.

HIDDEN TREASURES Consignment store is a blessing to families BY PATTY HUTCHENS FOR THE LAST SEVEN YEARS, Baby-Go-Round has been known as the go-to place for those seeking clothing, shoes, diapers, toys, baby gear and all that one needs to best care for a growing family. With sizes that range from newborn to children’s size 10/12, the consignment store has met the needs of many in our community. And as the needs change, owner Patty Lopez has evolved her store and expanded her inventory to fulfill a void that was left by the closing of another local retail shop.

Patty and Al moved to Bonners Ferry from Denver in May of 2003 to be closer to family. They had visited here regularly for 25 years and are happy they have been able to call Bonners Ferry home for the last 13 years. And the people of Bonners Ferry are not only thrilled to have them here, but are grateful for the services they offer. Each and every day, Patty said customers extend their gratitude and tell her they don’t know what they would do without Baby-Go-Round. And then there are the grandparents who say they wished there was a consignment business such as Patty’s when they were raising children. After all, it can be expensive to keep growing children clothed throughout the seasons, especially when they typically outgrow clothes before they wear them out.

“In November of 2015 after Sequels (a consignment store) closed, there was a need for resale women’s clothing as well, so we added that department,” said Lopez. Since Baby-Go-Round opened in October of 2009, Lopez said her goal has never waivered—to provide affordable, quality goods to her customers.

Just some of the many positive things people are saying on the store’s Facebook page include comments such as, “This business is a blessing for our community! I am so thankful for it!” Another comment found on their Facebook page is “Amazing service, value and really clean and organized. Love this place!” It is evident that Patty Lopez and BabyGo-Round have been a blessing to the community.

“We ask our consignors to bring clean, fresh inventory that they would consider buying themselves, and we add new inventory daily,” shared Lopez. “We are dedicated to our customers and do our best to help them locate just what they want and need.” It is not uncommon for a customer to tell Lopez that he or she has looked all over for a special item and finally found it at Baby-Go-Round. “The monthly drawing of $25.00 in-store credit for customers is also a big hit!”

“This store is as much a community service as it is a growing business,” said Patty. “As I plan my retirement, an important aspect is to see it continue for Bonners Ferry, surrounding areas and the hundreds of consignors that have given support throughout the years.”

Patty Lopez attributes the success of her store to her two highly dedicated part time employees. “They hang in there through thick and thin and understand how hard it is to make it in a small community,” said Patty, who also is grateful to her husband, Al, who helps by doing anything that is needed from being her “Uber driver,” to painting, running errands and mopping the floor. “Other family members are there to help as well with just a call.”

WATCH YOUR GARDEN GROW! Seed saving benefits community By Patty Hutchens

DO YOU WANT TO HAVE your own garden but just don’t have the green thumb that it takes? Maybe the thought of purchasing seeds year after year is a bit overwhelming. The Boundary County Extension Office has initiated a library of seeds that includes open pollinated and heirloom seed, from flowers to vegetables, for people to borrow and plant. Their goal is to support gardeners from beginners to experts to assist them on learning to grow, harvest and save seeds. “Currently I have in stock poppy, Japanese iris, calendula, marigold, hollyhock, cilantro, dill, chives, amaranth, spinach, red orach, carrot and a Vermont Cranberry Bean,” said Angela Tucker, the bookkeeper for the Boundary County Extension office who came up with the idea of a seed library. “I have carrots and beets in the ground and hoping to collect seed from them this coming summer.” Tucker came up with the idea of starting a seed library after she attended a class last February

As a community that saves seeds, Boundary County can build a local seed stock that will be acclimated to our specific climate. Tucker also cites cost as a large benefit of seed saving. in Coeur d’Alene called Seed School in a Day, which primarily focused on the different methods of saving seeds. “I learned at this class that Coeur d’Alene had recently started a seed library and they were having a great deal of success,” shared Tucker of her inspiration. “I kept that in the back of my head. I have always been a seed saver, and this

past summer I was super diligent and collected more seed than ever, much to my husband’s dismay as it can be a little messy and take up a little too much space in his shop.” As a community that saves seeds, Boundary County can build a local seed stock that will be acclimated to our specific climate. Tucker also cites cost as a large benefit of seed saving. “It can be very costly to purchase packets of seeds every year, especially if you want a big garden,” she said. They are holding a class on seed saving techniques on January 27. While that class is nearly full, Tucker said they will definitely hold another one should this one fill up. As the word has spread, the enthusiasm has grown throughout the community. Tucker has received phone calls from people who say they plan to contribute to the library, and she is working with those who oversee the GROW garden to see about saving a few plants to collect seed from and add to their collection. But, like anything, there have been some negative statements. Tucker said that some have said that people will come and check out seeds yet never contribute back. While Tucker is aware this may happen in some cases, especially if someone moves, she said in general people who are seeking to contribute are like her and by nature do save seeds. As for her interest, it is something about which she is passionate. “It seems silly for a bookkeeper to start a seed library,” said Tucker. “But I am also an Advanced Master Gardener.”

THE JANUARY 27 SEED SAVING CLASS PUT ON BY THE BOUNDARY COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE WILL TAKE PLACE AT THEIR MEETING ROOM AND THE COST IS ONLY $3. PLEASE CALL AHEAD TO SIGN UP. THEIR NUMBER IS 208.267.3235.

A BONNERS FERRY TREASURE Historic venue brings the arts to life BY PATTY HUTCHENS

HOUSED IN THE ICONIC BUILDING that sits on Ash Street, The Pearl Theater has been a delight to many over the years. A 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, The Pearl Theater first opened its doors in October of 2011 under private management. But those involved wanted to find a way to better serve the demands that came with a performing arts facility and decided to pursue becoming a nonprofit organization. That process was completed in late 2012, and its mission of fostering the performing arts throughout Boundary County for the education, entertainment and inspiration of the community has been thriving since.

other occasions both formal and casual. “We provide an outlet for emerging artists during Open Mic nights once a month, and an outlet for artists to meet other artists during Performers Circle,” said Treasurer Denise Crichton, adding that both events are free and open to the public. Each month The Pearl Theater’s board of directors strives to put on events that will attract a variety of age groups and music and artistic tastes, ensuring that it is truly a community theater. However, all of this would not be possible without the dedication of those who work diligently to further The Pearl Theater’s purpose and to provide the community with quality entertainment and artistic expression.

Adding to its charm is the unique history of the building that The Pearl Theater calls home. Originally built in 1894, the building was initially a Roman Catholic Church. Since that time, the dwelling has provided a place of worship for several different church groups.

The board of directors is comprised of an eclectic group of individuals; some have lived here for almost all of their lives while others came to the area more recently and were eager to share their love of the arts with their new community.

“When the transformation into what we now know as The Pearl occurred, the many years of worship, fellowship and social presence of well over 100 years remained with the walls of the building,” said Dottie Gray, the newest board member.

“We are always open to new ideas, and we encourage people to become involved in their community theater, whether through attendance at shows, membership, volunteering or facility upkeep,” said Board President Rhea Verbanic.

Thanks to the vision and perseverance of Honorary Founding Member Carolyn Testa, the 1,250-square-foot building underwent a complete overhaul in its transition to a performance space. The stunning renovation includes main floor seating, a balcony, and cafe seating with tall tables next to a commercial kitchen that serves beer, wine, coffee, snack plates, savory baked goods and sweets.

“This community’s response to the programming at the Pearl is one of the most satisfying pieces in the success of the theater. Sharing performances draws diverse groups of people together with shared experiences,” said Secretary Valerie Thompson.

“With a capacity limited to 157 people, the relationship between audience and performer is a uniquely familiar one; add to this the great acoustics from the Pearl's high-arched ceiling—and the nearby train sometimes passing through just 50 feet away—and the end result can at times feel almost magical,” said Ginny Kirsch, founding board member, administrative assistant and volunteer.

The Pearl is a beautiful and intimate venue to rent, whether it’s for a wedding, a reception, a party, family reunion, a fundraiser or a fashion show. Please call The Pearl Theater at 208.610.2846 for additional information, prices and availability.

MARTIN MASIN runs the creative web agency, Constructive Roots, that helps small businesses get noticed online in Coeur d’Alene, and he handpicked the city as the place for his business and his family. Masin specializes in search engine optimization, or SEO: “In a nutshell, it’s about how well your website uses keywords on Google Search,” Masin explained. Masin first saw the possibilities of optimizing SEO when he was commissioned to set up an enterprise level data solution called Channel Advisor on eBay. Masin, who is originally from Denver, was living in Texas back in 2009 and working for a national automotive dealership group. Not only were his sales for the business high, he also saw how the Google search engine was changing and used the gig as a learning experience. “I realized I had to build this out and do this for myself,” said Masin. He went online and studied SEO for a year, then launched his marketing company in 2010. Later that year, he moved back to his hometown of Denver and began Constructive Roots. It was then that he found Shopify, an ecommerce company to partner with, and began monetizing his SEO expertise. In just a month's time, he had become the leading SEO expert in the Denver metro area for the Shopify ecommerce platform.

The only catch, however, is that store owners have to do their own marketing.” This is the piece of the market that Masin has capitalized on over the past five years. He said that many business owners use Shopify as a way to build their presence online in addition to selling on Amazon and other marketplaces. Masin first became a Shopify Expert back in 2013 and quickly became the leading Shopify SEO expert in Denver, Colorado. He started researching the most professional and costeffective ways to establish an online store to help businesses profit from the platform. In that first month's time, he was one of their top sellers and became their resident SEO expert. He quickly amassed more clients with the reviews he got from others. “I haven't had to do any marketing for our business since 2013 as our reviews, referrals and happy customers have been the core aspect to our business,” he said. Small businesses never stop In spite of his success, Masin never stops learning, especially in the field of technology.

Ecommerce expert

“Google changes things every three to six months. It's like a Rubik’s Cube. They are always changing their algorithms. They say it's to improve their search results but 60 percent is to protect their ad space on the web,” he said. “SEO is not limited to Google. A lot of people don't know that YouTube is the second biggest search engine in the U.S.”

Masin soon began to grow Constructive Roots and amassed clients not just from Denver but from across the nation and world, including Canada, Mexico, UK, Switzerland, Israel and New Zealand. But it’s his expertise with Shopify that’s helped his business grow.

Through Constructive Roots, Masin also offers webinars to help business owners to better understand SEO. He is also working on an SEO app with Shopify coming in February 2017 called Instant SEO. “This app is going to simplify SEO on Shopify for Shopify merchants,” Masin said.

Shopify is a fairly new tech company based in Canada that went public on the New York Stock Exchange in May 2015. Small and enterprise businesses use Shopify to gain exposure and use the Shopify’s ecommerce platform for pennies on the dollar as compared to other solutions.

The Information Age is for everyone

“(Shopify) is a way to sell products online without any tech experience or having to hire a designer,” Masin explained. “It's a standalone store, not a marketplace. You have your own domain; owners keep 97 percent of their profits.

What Masin wants people to know is that technology is for everyone and it's a part of everything we do. While it's important to become educated in some aspect of technology, a full-blown university degree isn't required, and Masin is proof of that. “Much of (technology) is not as complicated as it seems. I would advise many high school graduates to get involved in technology at

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

21

some level. Many people do not know that you don't have to be a developer or a coder to be involved in the tech sector... After the recession, many high schoolers and college graduates found themselves unemployed. However, many people who have started big companies and tech startups don't always have big name degrees,” he advised. “People think that you have to go to Silicon Valley, but there is a lot of innovation right here in Coeur d'Alene that people don't realize such as xCraft, Wedding Nook and the Innovate Collective,” he said. Masin is a big believer of the technology industry revitalizing the U.S. economy. Companies like Google and Apple are relatively new as compared to companies like Exxon Mobile. However, tech companies are now rising higher up in the ranks as some of the largest corporations in the U.S. Calling Coeur d'Alene home From Denver he and his wife, Gillian, moved to San Jose and thought that was the place where they would settle down and grow their respective businesses (Gillian runs her own startup, RememberYourWine.com) and family. But it was a visit to his mother-in-law’s at Hayden Lake that set their course of life toward Coeur d'Alene. While they liked San Jose, he and his wife grew disenchanted with their lives there until one day Gillian suggested that they make the move to Coeur d'Alene and work on their businesses. “Hands down, we made the best decision,” Masin said. “It's like Denver here with an even better quality of life. It's a lot of work when you run your own business now that we have an 8-month-old daughter, but we haven't regretted it ever since.” For more information about Constructive Roots, visit constructiveroots.com or search for the Facebook page.

Health Revolt Back pain: an escapable epidemic By Kate Murphy

IT’S NO SECRET THAT CHRONIC BACK PAIN is a gargantuan medical matter—especially for the masses it plagues. Roughly 85 percent of Americans will experience a bout of chronic back pain during their lifetime. Back pain is the number one complaint of musculoskeletal pain, the second most common reason for a doctor’s visit (second to colds and flu), and is the leading cause of work-related absence in the U.S. And all these visits aren’t cheap. Currently, Americans fork over approximately $100 billion each year for back pain. And yet, researchers from the University of Washington found that the dramatic rise in expenditures for the diagnosis and treatment of back and neck problems has not led to expected improvements in patient health. Instead, estimated medical costs and the prevalence of back pain continue to increase simultaneously. We have to ask ourselves, what are we missing? What’s to blame for your back pain? Unfortunately, when we arrive on this planet it’s without a user’s manual. Most of us are not told how to sit, stand, bend or move properly. And our culture is not teaching us well. We live in a technologically advanced, industrial-driven society where most of us spend generous portions of our day sitting. When we’re not sitting, we’re moving in ways that compromise the strength of our bodies. Since we’re often not told how to do it differently, the problems compound.

When sitting for prolonged periods of time, the body begins to shut down, muscles become weaker and dormant, and they no longer help to support the spine. Desk jobs, too much time on computers, texting or standing in undesirable positions all lead to an accelerated breakdown of the spine as muscles atrophy and bones begin to rest on bones. Sitting leads to weak and tight hips that eventually lose their ability to move well. Our bodies are not designed for a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting, far more destructive than most are aware, is now being referred to as “the new smoking.” Not only does prolonged sitting cause problems, our movement patterns also determine our strength and wholeness. A large portion of back pain is a direct result of poor movement patterns. For example, our single most important movement pattern is hinging at the hips. Imagine how a toddler squats to pick up a toy. The back is practically straight and the hips hinge behind the ankles. As adults we often hinge higher up, bending or hinging with our spines. We have lost the ability, largely, to hinge at our hips, which creates a cascade of issues. The spine has a limited number of bends throughout its lifespan before it begins to break down. Our backs are like metal coat hangers. They only bend so many times before they become weak and eventually break. Wherever there is movement, especially improper, excessive and repetitive movement (i.e., bending) there is increased mobility. But too much mobility leads to an accelerated breakdown of connective tissue, instability and eventual pain. Why Conventional Treatment For Back Pain Is A Failure Traditional back pain treatment focuses on symptom management. Most treatments start with rest, ice, heat and Advil, but they quickly accelerate to include muscle relaxers, injections, massage, acupuncture and chiropractics. When those fail to get rid of the pain, the majority considers surgery. Patients who suffer from failed back surgery are showing up in the offices of physicians, surgeons and pain specialists in overwhelming numbers. Sadly, as surgery continues to grow in prevalence, so will the number of failed surgeries. Back pain is no different than any other chronic modern day health issue. If we continue to treat the symptom rather than the cause, a cure will never be found. And chances are that if you’ve suffered some episode of back pain or endure chronic back pain, it may seem reasonable to “give your back a break” by decreasing physical activity and movement. But that’s exactly the wrong approach. A Modern Day Antidote To Back Pain Rather than ignoring the underlying root of back pain—weak muscles and poor movement patterns—we should address them directly. The best way to get rid of poor movement patterns is to repeat better ones. Foundation Training (FT), created by Dr. Eric Goodman, is a series of corrective exercises designed to strengthen our “core.” Foundation Training redefines the core as any muscle that connects to our pelvis (hips). Rather than compartmentalizing muscles with isolated exercises like crunches, FT uses combined chains of movement to encourage the core muscles to work together as they are designed to move.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

24

FT reminds the body how to bend properly by hinging at the hips and activating the glutes and posterior chain all while protecting the spine. FT also works to bring length to chronically tight muscles in the front of the body and strength and stability to weak muscles on the backside of the body. In his book, “True to Form,” Dr. Goodman describes the purpose of FT: “Foundation Training is a reaction to where our modern times have taken our bodies physically. It’s not that we don’t take care of ourselves, but the postures we’ve gotten used to while sitting in front of the computer and television prevent us from moving the way we’re meant to. Everyone puts his or her body into positions that are extremely challenging, and the body begins to support them. Foundation Training corrects those positions by working in opposition to them.” Physical therapists, trainers and others heavily emphasize core strength to remedy back pain. However, many of the core exercises being prescribed involve repetitive bending of the spine. This accelerates the breakdown of the

spine. Core muscles should be strengthened in a way that lengthens the muscles of the core, re-educating them on how to provide proper support to the spine. Hint: if you’ve been doing crunches to strengthen your “core,” chances are you’re adding to the problem. Foundation Training Changed My Life And I would know all about those problems. I was a personal trainer for over 10 years before I discovered Foundation Training for myself. I experienced debilitating and chronic pain for years, and even with all of my expertise and with help from doctors, chiropractors and specialists, I found no relief. With Foundation Training, however, I was able to change my story, opt out of the symptom treatment treadmill, and help my body regain strength and freedom from pain. Now I can’t imagine my work as a personal trainer without Foundation Training. I became certified just over a year ago. Bicep curls and six-packs quickly lost their appeal as I witnessed FT’s incredible potential. Now it’s all I do. It blows my mind on a daily basis. Helping others out of pain will never get old!

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

25

How do I get started? If you’re new to Foundation Training, I highly recommend booking a session with a certified FT instructor. Foundation Training is unlike anything you’ve done and has a bit of a learning curve. Once you’ve learned the exercises, there are instructional DVDs with daily workouts available online to help facilitate your progress. You can search for an instructor near you here: www.foundationtraining.com. Skype appointments are also available. If you are interested in learning more, you can purchase Dr. Goodman’s first book, “Redefine Your Core, Conquer Back Pain, and Move with Confidence” or his second book, “True to Form.” Kate Murphy is the owner of Health Revolt and passionate movement expert and Foundation Training instructor. Remember it is not always about the food that you eat, but who you are with and why you are celebrating. Here are some heart healthy tips: •

L O L - Not in an email or text, but really LAUGH OUT LOUD. Research from the University of Maryland Medical Center shows that laughter helps relieve the stress that damages the tissue that forms the inner lining of blood vessels, helping your blood flow. It also promotes the healthy function of blood vessels. Let the Music Move You - Whether it’s the cha-cha or a two-step tune that gets your body moving, dancing raises your

heart rate, burns calories and makes for a great heart healthy workout. Let’s dance! •

Walk It Off - The next time you feel overwhelmed, mad or totally frustrated, take a stroll. A five-minute walk will do wonders for clearing your head and lowering your stress levels. Find Your Happy Place - A sunny outlook is good for your heart. Research from the University College of London shows that those who are happy tend to have lower levels of the potentially harmful hormone cortisol, as well as other stress-inducing chemicals.

Benefits of Yoga Struggling to make it to the gym? Yoga is the solution! Although it’s a slow paced exercise, you’ll be getting all the benefits you need to get in shape!

leT'S GET –physical— By Colin Anderson An active lifestyle and healthy outlook on eating and exercise can help us feel and look better. The following pages outline a few key things that we can do moving into the new year to help jump start an active approach to life in 2017. Cheers to health!

Designing Your Workout Routine

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

29

know your strength To Avoid Injury You were All Conference track in high school, and 20 years later you’ve decided to pick up right where you left off—bad idea. When starting an exercise plan, it’s extremely important to know your abilities and limitations. As we age, our flexibility naturally weakens and our muscle recovery time takes longer. Be sure to stretch before and after workouts to avoid slipping a disk in your back or spraining and straining knees, ankles and shoulders. Most gyms have on-site trainers that will take you through a series of tests then set up a program tailored to your goals.

How To: Build your stamina If it’s been six months since you ran six miles; don’t hop on the treadmill and plan on doing the full six. When building up endurance and stamina, the initial goal is time, not distance. You might be able to run an eightminute mile, but if you’re maxed out after eight minutes you won’t do yourself as much good in the long-term as if you slowed to a 10-minute pace and ran for 30 minutes. It’s good to vary the machines you use as well. Stairs, treadmill, elliptical and bike will challenge your muscles and endurance better than the same motion each day.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

30

f o u n d atTraining ion Often overlooked by gym goers, getting your core in shape is arguably the most important exercise. Having a strong core gives you the balance and strength to move on to more complex lifts. If the core is weak, your body will compensate on heavy lifts which can lead to injury. Finding 10 to 15 minutes each workout for various forms of sit ups and balancing techniques will lead you to a much stronger foundation and better workouts. It also works the areas where just about all of us are trying to shed a few pounds and inches.

Dedicated Space Inside Your Home

Almost as popular of a New Year’s resolution as getting in shape, de-cluttering the home is high on many priority lists. By getting rid of excess, you may just open up an entire room in which you can place workout equipment. A small bedroom or office can easily fit yoga mats, resistance bands, free weights, an exercise ball, stationary bike, bench or other larger piece of equipment. You can get a full-body workout with these few items alone. Having a dedicated workout space in your home saves you a trip to the gym as well as gym fees and allows you to work out any time of day.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

31

C i r cworkouts uit For those looking to ramp up their results, circuit training provides an intense full body workout combining both strength and endurance. Participants go through a series of movements with little to no rest in between. Music is typically blaring, and your instructor will be motivating you to push your body way past your comfort zone. These workouts are intense, but combined with proper diet they help shed pounds and gain lean muscle faster than just about any other program out there. There are various in-home programs available, and gyms typically offer hour-long classes as well. You’ll be hurting, but most see the effort pay big dividends.

Buddy workouts Accountability is one of the biggest challenges to achieving goals. If you only have to report to yourself, it’s easy to skip a workout or cheat on your diet. Get your spouse, teenager or a friend involved with your goal and hold each other accountable. Even if your goals are different, you will be surprised at how much wanting your exercise buddy to succeed will make you want to succeed. This is also great social time outside of work. Buddies can push each other past their original goals, and bringing in additional people or creating a team challenge will also help keep you working towards your goal.

Chiropractic Care Can Help Your Body Run More Efficiently! Everyone knows that it is important to exercise regularly and eat right to take care of our bodies. But what if you are in too much pain to be able to exercise comfortably or safely? What if your range of motion is limited by stiffness?

Dr. Ralf Schurmann D.C.

By eliminating the headaches, muscle tightness, low back pain, and nerve interference (or subluxations) that result from misalignment, chiropractic helps the body become less limited in the types of and amount of movement it can perform well. Perhaps even more importantly, chiropractic care helps prevent injuries that can result from overtaxing a particular part of the body that may be compensating for those that aren’t functioning as well.

COLOR CABINETS Whether it is a dresser, a bathroom vanity, kitchen cupboards or a kitchen island, cabinets are no longer a standard white or wood. People are bringing color into their homes through use of color in their cabinets and other furnishings. If you are one who enjoys DIY projects, chalk paint is a popular way to refinish dressers, cabinets, bookcases and more. Chalk paint gives the surface a chalky texture and is often used with a soft wax that seals the paint and produces a matte finish. If you are seeking a more distressed look, some recommend sanding the painted surface and exposing the wood underneath. There are countless options to bring a pop of color to your home interior.

Spruce it up With Succulents Whether you have a green thumb or not, succulents are the perfect plant to bring some of the outside indoors. Because they require little maintenance and are resilient, they make the perfect accent to your dĂŠcor. One popular trend when it comes to succulents is tabletop terrariums. You can simply use a large mason jar and place some porous pebbles on the bottom followed by a thin layer of moss, potting charcoal and soil and another layer of stones, securing the succulent among the stones. For some variety, try adding seashells to your display or even some cactus plants.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

36

The Color of Cop per It is a popular trend in light fixtures, backsplashes, countertops and accent pieces; the color of copper adds class and warmth to any room in your home. And the good news is that adding some copper to your home dĂŠcor does not have to be expensive. You can simply take gold spray paint and add some bling to something you find at the thrift store. Kitchens are a popular place where copper lighting and accents are being seen more and more. From copper countertops, kitchen tables, sinks and light fixtures to canisters and cookware, there are countless ways to add class to your home!

Mosaic Tile Backsp lash While a tile backsplash has a functional purpose to protect the walls in your kitchen or bath, more and more people are using them to create beautiful pieces of art. If you are looking to provide your kitchen or bathroom with a little flare, using mosaic tile for your backsplash is a popular trend. While providing a classy look, it allows you to maximize your creativity given the vast amount of colors and patterns available. Whether your home is traditional or contemporary, mosaic tiles will add class and elegance to your space.

WINTER BY FOOT

SKI AND SNOWSHOE YOUR WAY ACROSS THE NORTHWEST

TRAVEL & LEISURE

BY COLIN ANDERSON AS WE COME SMACK INTO the middle of the coldest part of the year, many of us have retreated under cozy blankets, huddled with hands around warm drinks and consuming comfort foods. January through March is minihibernation time for thousands across the Northwest. While it might seem logical to stay inside and wait out the cold until spring, being sedentary for too long can lead to weight gain, low motivation and feelings of downright grumpiness. It can be a challenge to get motivated to exercise during the winter months, but a great way to keep in shape and see some amazing outdoor scenery is on snowshoes or on cross country skis. There are countless trails with miles of back country to explore. From flat, easy loops to mountain top hikes featuring stunning views and untouched powder, the options seem limitless. Both are easy to learn, and as you progress, you’ll soon be looking for the latest and greatest gear and far-out trails. Snowshoeing has seemingly been around since humans have lived in frozen environments. People all around the

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

38

world learned long ago that by spreading out the surface area under their feet, they would not sink nearly as deep into snow drifts, making getting to places easier and a lot less work. Through much of time wood was the primary material available, and snowshoes resembled giant tennis rackets. Today, you’ll find a much more efficient mode of travel with shoes that are typically only 2 to 3 feet in length and built from ultra-light and strong materials often weighing less than 5 pounds each. Crampons along the bottom of the shoe give you added grip in varying terrain and ice, and most people also bring hiking poles for added balance. Just slip your sturdy winter boots into the shoes and you’re ready to go. Cross country skis have also evolved from 7- to 8-foot long solid wood gliders to unbelievably light weight cambered skis that allow you more push with each motion. There are two common forms of cross country skiing. Classic style is used inside a grooved track. Keeping both skis in the track, the skier pushes down and launches himself forward on

SKI LOOPS ALONG BEAUTIFUL LAKE MCDONALD OR HIKE UP THE GOING TO THE SUN ROAD WHICH IS CLOSED TO VEHICLES DURING WINTER MONTHS. A STAY IN NEARBY WHITEFISH GIVES YOU ACCESS TO ALL KINDS OF ENTERTAINMENT AS WELL AS DOWNHILL OPPORTUNITIES AT WHITEFISH MOUNTAIN RESORT.

one ski, then glides until momentum slows and does the same with the other ski. Freestyle or skate skiing requires a little more coordination. Skiers go outside the track to the groomed flat surface and use a skating motion much like you would see on a sheet of ice. This allows the skier to go much faster but takes more time to master. Where to begin Ideally, you’ll want to begin in the gym on a cardio machine. Going straight from the couch to cross country will really punish the lungs, and you might not be able to go very far. Even those who train year-round will tell you the first day on skis gets their heart rate up quickly. This is also one of the excellent benefits to the sport. Cross country skiing is one of the best full body exercises you can do. As you push with your poles, you are engaging your biceps, triceps and shoulders. When you kick with your legs, you’re utilizing quads, hamstrings, calves and abdominal muscles. Your heart rate accelerates, giving you an excellent aerobic workout, plus your body tends to burn more calories exercising in the cold. With so much activity going on you warm up quickly so even on cold days most skiers wear lightweight caps, gloves, and jackets and you won’t need to bundle in bulky clothing. If you haven’t had the pleasure of snowshoeing or cross country skiing, a good place to start is usually at your nearest ski mountain. Many of our resorts and mountains have separate groomed trails for cross country and snowshoeing. They can also provide rental equipment so you can try before you buy. Check with outdoor stores like REI for

lessons and group events, and Nordic Clubs. Equipment can also typically be rented from these retailers. The hiking and biking trails at state parks are often converted into groomed trails during winter as well. Check with your closest park to see if it is accessible during winter months. Seeing your favorite hiking trail in winter often gives you a completely different perspective than during the spring and summer months. Destinations Winthrop, Washington: Few people know that the largest groomed Nordic ski trail system in the country is right in our backyard. The Methow Valley surrounding Winthrop has 120 miles of continually groomed trails. The interconnected trail system is surrounded by more than a million acres of forestland which offers incredible scenery as you glide around the trails. Local naturalists also provide scheduled scenic snowshoe hikes at a variety of distances. Guests learn about the surroundings while taking in some truly awe inspiring views. This is also one of the best places for dog lovers as 35 miles of the trails are open to dogs. If you have a mutt that loves to run, consider skijoring. Place a harness around your dog and one around yourself (typically a rock climbing harness) and let your dog pull you around the track. Glacier National Park, Montana: Millions visit “The Crown Jewel of the Continent” each summer but you’ll find far fewer crowds, more affordable lodging, and miles upon miles of snowshoeing and back country skiing come winter. Ski loops along beautiful Lake McDonald or hike up the Going To The Sun

Road which is closed to vehicles during winter months. A stay in nearby Whitefish gives you access to all kinds of entertainment as well as downhill opportunities at Whitefish Mountain Resort. McCall, Idaho: With five different Nordic areas McCall has trails for all levels, dog friendly skiing and snowshoeing, and even a biathlon course. Well known for year round outdoor adventure, there are also downhill mountains, ice fishing and snow tubing. You can end your day with a soak in one of the many natural hot springs in the surrounding areas. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing not only provide a great way to keep active in winter, but an opportunity to explore the mountains that surround us. The woods go silent during winter and when you’ve left the parking lot and ventured out a few miles, you’ll be amazed at the quiet and tranquility you’ll experience. These are lifelong activities that everyone from young children up can enjoy. Taking the family out for a day in the woods is a great way to come together, teaches your children about nature, and they’ll sleep hard after a day of pushing through the snow. Seek out the trails in your area or next time you’re on a weekend ski trip, carve out a little time to try cross country skiing or hike around in today’s high tech snowshoes. With miles and miles of trails across the Northwest, you’ll never run out of places to visit and explore. There are still months of winter ahead of us and that blanket and hot chocolate at the end of the day will feel all the better after a day spent skiing or snowshoeing.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS LOVE ME TENDER

Treat your valentine to a special night with Elvis By Patty Hutchens

MENTION “THE KING” and in all likelihood people will know exactly to whom you are referring. Elvis Presley was one of the most iconic entertainers of the 20th century. Although he has been gone for nearly 40 years, his music and his unique style have lived on. On February 11 at 7pm, come to the Pearl Theater for an amazing night featuring Elvis impersonator Brad Mitchell. The winner of Best Vocals at the Epic World Championship in Memphis in 2015 and the championship winner at the 2016 Georgia Elvis Festival, Mitchell is sure to treat attendees to a wonderful and fun-filled evening.

HIGHLIGHT EVENT

According to Lynn Haworth who is in charge of booking and performances at The Pearl, they learned about Mitchell from a fan and patron of The Pearl. “This Bonners Ferry resident was camping at a local lake and Brad was in a neighboring campsite. They got sitting around the campfire, and Brad started singing and everyone was amazed,” said Haworth. “ They exchanged numbers and Brad’s number came to the booking committee at The Pearl...the rest is history.” Haworth said that Mitchell is the first potential performer at The Pearl to actually make a special trip there to see how he wanted to stage the show, what sound equipment would be needed and to discuss lighting and set up. Accompanying Mitchell will be five backup singers and several costumes. The Pearl Theater performance committee decided to book the Elvis Tribute around Valentine’s Day to offer a fun night out for friends, couples and families as an alternative to trying to get a dinner reservation. The venue will be decorated in a Valentine’s theme, and the candles will be lit. The Pearl Cafe´will offer a dinner menu and lots of desserts along with beer, wine and other beverages. The doors open at 6pm. Tickets are $16 in advance either online or at Mountain Mike’s and Bonners Books, and $18 at the door. The ticket price for students is $5.
