IT’S HERE. The New Year is typically a time for reflecting upon the past and looking forward to focus on how we can be a better version of ourselves. Those New Year’s resolutions haunt us for the first couple of months and then are typically soon forgotten by many.

In this month’s issue, there is an article on goal setting through vision boards. This is one way you can set yourself up for success this year. One of those “visions” on your board can be a simple act of donating time, money or talent to your community.

But what if you did something different this year for a New Year’s resolution? Typical resolutions include eating healthier, exercising more and making more time for ourselves. What if you instead focused on making the lives of others better? After all, when we spread joy and give of our time and talent to others, we get so much in return. And if you are intrinsically rewarded by acts of kindness, you may just find those other New Year’s resolutions you have made in the past will fall into place. Consider volunteering at a place that is in need, whether it is a soup kitchen, animal shelter or the local food bank. Interacting with and giving to others is sure to bring you happiness.

Whatever you decide to focus on this year, be sure to make it realistic. Volunteering does not have to be done on a weekly, or even monthly, basis. Make it fun and maybe even involve the kids when appropriate.

Nature Awaits your NEXT move!

We at Living Local 360 wish you all a very happy—and successful—New Year!

FOOD BANK SHELVES FILLED BY COLIN ANDERSON

A

s we prepare and participate in holiday gatherings, work parties, and New Year celebrations, food is often the centerpiece of the event. Many of us gather with family and friends to celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year with a big meal. It’s a time to be thankful but also an important time to remember that there are those in the community who struggle each day putting a meal on the table, let alone a holiday feast. Community Action Partnership (CAP) is one of the great local organizations dedicated to stamping out hunger and helping people get back on their feet. The organization serves the 10 northern counties of Idaho as well as Asotin County in Washington. Its mission is to be a catalyst for building relationships that inspire and equip people to end poverty in their community. Programs include offering energy assistance and weatherization home improvement to help with utility bills, financial coaching, advocating for area seniors and food and nutrition programs. In Bonners Ferry, CAP runs the food bank that helps get both canned and fresh foods into the hands of those most in need. Liz Bigsby is the community engagement liaison for CAP in Bonners Ferry and has held the position for five years. According to Liz, donations from Thanksgiving through the lead up to Christmas were some of the most generous that she’s ever seen. “Our community has provided a tremendous amount to CAP this year. The totals are greater than any other year before, so we are fully stocked and very thankful,” she explained. It’s a true testament to the character of the community that even while so many were planning their own celebrations and spending hard-

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

earned money on parties and Christmas presents, generous donors were still able to surpass donation expectations. With the shelves stocked, local families in need were fed through the holidays and into the New Year, but that’s often when food banks like CAP begin to see a decline in donations. “The donations that come through this time of year usually carry us for a while, but come spring and into the summer we see less and less offered because folks are out enjoying the sunshine and warm weather, and I don’t blame them,” said Liz. She works on getting the word out that even though winter is a time when many struggle the most, hunger is a year-round issue across the region, and there are several easy ways you can help keep the shelves stocked throughout the year. During your trips to the grocery store, grab one additional non-perishable food item and set it aside. As you collect the items, occasionally drop them off as you drive by the CAP office at 6665 Main Street. Liz says when the weather warms families who struggle enjoy the same summer fare like items for the barbecue and the goodies to make s’mores around a campfire. “Everything you usually enjoy in the summer is especially welcome to a family in need,” she said. Like the majority of nonprofits, CAP could not function without the hard work and dedication of its volunteers. Volunteers often sort through donations and stack the food bank shelves, help direct clients to the services they are in need of, and help with other CAP functions and fundraisers.

8

“We love our volunteers, and we absolutely could not do this without them,” said Liz. Those interested in learning more can pick up a volunteer packet at the CAP office during regular business hours. Monetary donations are also welcomed. All donations are tax deductible and can be one time or multiple times throughout the year. You can drop by the office, mail a check or click the ‘Donate’ tab at the website CAP4Action.org. You are able to specify which office you would like to donate to online as well. With many more cold months ahead, families in need can rest a little easier knowing that their community food bank will have them covered thanks to the incredible generosity of their neighbors. Liz and the volunteers at Bonners Ferry Community Action Partnership are hoping this is the year that those generous donations continue throughout the year so the shelves never go empty. As someone who has seen the impacts of these donations many times over, Liz is happy to be part of such an impactful group and generous community.

fter the many excesses of the holiday season, January seems like an ideal place to stop and regroup. Although I truly love the colors and vibrancy of the holidays, with decorations and lights and gifts galore, it all becomes too much at the start of a new year. Come January, I want a clean slate. This is especially true of our home, and this year I keep thinking about a trend that many of us have heard of: minimalism. How would it feel to only live with what we truly need? For most of us, this concept seems far-fetched. We have so many belongings and things in our lives that we can’t imagine what it would take to clear it all out in favor of white walls and stark interiors. However, what if we just took some of the concepts of minimalism and applied them to our own lifestyle? For example, what if for every item we brought into

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

our home, one went out? Or we kept only the things we truly love? There are many approaches to minimalism, and I’ve read about nearly all of them—Konmari’s “keep only what brings you joy” method, Bea Johnson’s zero-waste home initiative, even Swedish death cleaning (yes, this is a thing!). I’ve learned about the Japanese practice of wabi sabi, where things are not discarded when they are damaged or broken but instead valued all the more for their imperfection. All of these are wonderful in theory but very hard for most of us to put into practice. It’s so easy to just keep collecting things. This year, however, I’d like to change that cycle. I want to feel more in control of my home and less like the things in it are in control of me. For me, that means using an idea or

ow that 2018 has come to an end, you may want to look ahead to see which areas of your life you can improve in 2019. Perhaps you’ll decide to exercise more, eat healthier foods, reconnect with old friends or volunteer at a school or charitable organization. All these goals are certainly worthwhile—but you also may want to add some New Year’s financial resolutions to your list. Here are a few ideas to consider: • Boost contributions to your employersponsored retirement plan. Good news! Contribution limits will be increasing for many employer-sponsored retirement plans.

There are many approaches to minimalism ... two from all that I’ve learned on the subject of minimalism. Before I purchase something new, I will consider whether something I already own can perform that function. Before I add to my wardrobe, I will donate an item (or two!) of clothing that I no longer wear. I will commit to going through my home, room by room, and decide which items I love and use and which ones I only keep out of habit or because I spent “good” money on them. What’s more, I will ask my husband and kids to do the same. Though I’m sure it will seem overwhelming at first, there are some benefits to implementing some aspects of minimalism into our daily life. I’m hoping to spend less, for one. After all, if I only purchase what I truly need, I’m sure to save some cash! In addition, I’m hoping that if we whittle down our belongings to what we absolutely must have, those things will be easier to find when we need them! And, if these ideas can help make our family more environmentally sound by not producing so much trash in the process, then it’s a win-win.

64891 Highway 2 • Bonners Ferry, Idaho

As I go forward with this experiment, I will try to remember the words of the godfather of modern interior design, William Morris: “Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Good words for all of us to live by, I think. Happy New Year!

For 2019, you can contribute up to $19,000 (up from $18,500 in 2018) or $25,000 (up from $24,500 in 2018) if you’re 50 or older to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while any earnings growth is tax-deferred. (Keep in mind that taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59 ½ may be subject to a 10 percent IRS penalty.) At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. • Try to “max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2019, you can put in up to $6,000 in a traditional or Roth IRA (up from $5,500 in 2018) or $7,000 (up from $6,500) if you’re 50 or older. (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, depending on your income, and any earnings growth is tax-deferred. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible,

but earnings growth can be withdrawn tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59 ½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. You can put most types of investments—stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on—into an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your 401(k) or similar plan. • Build an emergency fund. Try to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping in to your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair. • Control your debts. Do what you can to keep your debts under control. Ultimately, the less you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future. • Don’t overreact to financial market volatility. In 2018—especially the last few months of the year—we saw considerable market volatility, with huge drops and big gains in rapid succession. What will 2019 bring? It’s always difficult—and usually futile—trying to forecast the market’s performance over the course of an entire year. But, in any case, try not to overreact to whatever ups and downs we may experience. Instead, continue pursuing an investment strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

t 8am each Thursday, volunteers are busy at work at United Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry preparing a meal for up to 100 people. A weekly tradition for two years, the community meal is open to everyone.

When it first began two years ago, there were approximately 40 to 50 people who attended the luncheons, and this past summer they saw as many as 100—a testament to how much people enjoy the fellowship and food.

Melanie Staples has been involved in hosting the community meal since it began and feels blessed to be a part of it. “A former pastor at United Methodist came up with the idea, and we took a leap of faith,” said Melanie. “We chose to host the luncheon on Thursdays as that is the day the Senior Center is closed.”

“It’s become a very nice community and social event,” said Melanie. Professionals from the community often attend as do caregivers who bring in those who may not otherwise be able to get out and socialize. “One does not have to be associated with the church to attend. We welcome everyone.”

Melanie and the approximately 10 volunteers gather at 8am each Thursday to make sure everything is ready to go for the 11:30am luncheon, which goes until 1pm. The meal is a full meal complete with salad, a main course and dessert. Melanie explains that nearly all the food is donated, with many of the desserts being provided by members of United Methodist Church.

There is no charge for the meal, although donations are accepted.

“Everything is fresh,” said Melanie “Much of our food comes from the community garden.”

This is a gift to the community and all are welcome to enjoy a meal together and visit with old friends while making some new ones along the way!

In addition to putting on the meal, volunteers also do outreach and deliver food to seniors who are homebound, checking in on them and visiting for a while.

horter days and icy roads make driving this time of year more dangerous. There are many myths surrounding winter driving safety. See if you can distinguish fact from fiction. It is not likely that I will ever be involved in a motor vehicle crash. FICTION Unfortunately, according to the AAA foundation for traffic safety, more than one in five drivers report having been involved in a crash which resulted in at least one person requiring hospital care. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports 6,400 U.S. citizens are injured every day in a crash. In fact, motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for people ages 5 through 34. Winter conditions increase the risk of a fatal crash 3.6 times more than any other weather hazards. FACT According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this is true. Icy and snowy roads are more dangerous than all other types of weather conditions combined.

Rural roads are more dangerous than urban roads. FACT More crashes occur on city streets, but a higher number of fatal crashes happen on rural roads. According to the CDC, only 19 percent of U.S. residents live in rural areas like Boundary County. However, over half (57 percent) of the vehicle-related deaths occurred in these regions. If you are traveling in a rural area, you are 2.6 times more likely to die than if your crash happened in an urban setting. Even with high-beam headlights on, visibility is limited to about 500 feet. FACT This gives less time to react. Breaking times on ice can be 10 times greater than on dry roads. The combination of these factors increases the risk. Slow down. Accelerate and decelerate gently. Seat belts really don’t make that much difference in saving lives. FICTION Seat belts are effective. Recent data from NHTSA showed that seat belts reduce the rate of death in motor vehicle crashes by 45 to 60

16

percent. In 2016, seat belts saved almost 15,000 lives. Child car seats and booster seats do a good job of protecting children. FACT According to the CDC, motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among children. Buckling children in correctly sized car seats, booster seats and seat belts cuts serious and fatal injuries by more than half.

NEED CHAINS? STOP IN AND SEE US TODAY!

Almost everyone in North Idaho wears their seat belt. FICTION Analysis of data from telephone surveys by the CDC from 2002-2012 showed only 60 to 80 percent of motor vehicle occupants in Boundary County report wearing a seat belt on every trip. It is winter in North Idaho. Slow down and remember to buckle up every drive, no matter how short. It might save your life or the lives of those you love. Be safe out there! enior Isaac Wilson began to play soccer in eighth grade; something he said was initially a challenge as he had to catch up with his teammates who had been playing the sport for much longer. But true to his nature, Isaac put in the time, practiced hard and quickly became successful. When it comes to academics, Isaac also works hard. He is pursuing his associate’s degree while still enrolled at Bonners Ferry High School; something which takes a great deal of time and commitment. “I may go to college if my future job requires it, and I would also like to play sports in college,” said Isaac. He is interested in the medical field and also possibly a field that would involve electronics. “I enjoy caring for people. I find electronics very intriguing and have a natural knack for it,” he said. There have been many great memories over the years, but Isaac said the one that stands out

most when it comes to soccer was winning the consolation game his junior year. The part of soccer Isaac said he enjoys most is how he and his team work together to succeed, often ending up on top. And this year was certainly a great example of that as Isaac finished the season with the title of IML (Intermountain League) All League MVP and, along with his teammates Drew Foster, Gabe See and Seth Bateman, being selected to the IML All League team. Isaac and his team finished strong with an overall record of 15-3-2, going undefeated in the IML with a record of 10-0. Anyone who has been involved in athletics knows that there are many life lessons that one learns along their journey. For Isaac, he said he has learned the importance of being aware. “One life lesson I have learned is that I always need to be looking at where I’m going and where I’m at.”

COMING TOGETHER FOR BRIAN OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT FOR FATHER BATTLING CANCER BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS COURTESY OF MIKE ASHBY

T

his past September, Brian Ashby wasn’t feeling very well. A trip to the doctor would completely change his life. The diagnosis was stage 4 cancer. The father of four with a fifth on the way was now in for the battle of his life, and thanks to the generosity of the community his family has called home for generations, he would have an army going into battle with him. “There is nobody nicer than Brian; he is the nicest guy you will ever meet,” said Andrakay Pluid. “We were all pretty upset when we heard the news because it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.” For 10 years, Brian has worked for Andrakay’s husband and father-in-law as a log truck operator. Coupled with his positive and friendly personality, he is described as a loyal employee

who is reliable, always on time and a true team player. When news of the diagnosis came to light, it didn’t take long for his work family to begin brainstorming ways in which they could help.

“I didn’t have to solicit hardly any donations. People came forward asking, ‘What can I do to help?’” said Andrakay, who ended up organizing the event.

“My husband actually came up with the idea. We have young children of our own about the same age as Brian’s and we thought about what would happen to us if we were in the same situation,” she said.

In all, 120 items were donated to a silent auction for the evening. These included everything from locally made artwork and household décor to a load of firewood and Gonzaga basketball tickets. South Hill Meat & Locker donated 80 pounds of hamburger, Super 1 Foods gave enough to cover all the spaghetti sauce and The Bread Basket Bakery sent in 40 loaves of bread. Volunteers worked the event and also brought desserts and other goodies. When the final numbers were tallied, the event brought in just shy of $70,000, all going to Brian and his family.

The idea started as something simple—a spaghetti feed to see if they could raise some money that would help cover the medical costs. Brian is the sole income earner for the family and is now unable to work. With four young children, a pregnant wife and upcoming expensive medical bills, money was soon going to become a real issue. What happened next was nothing short of incredible.

seen what this community does when tragedy strikes, but the total and the volume of this was just overwhelming.” As Andrakay said, “I didn’t even have to ask for anything and we raised $70,000.” With his battle set to begin, the Ashbys made the extremely difficult choice to send their young children to live with Brian's wife Susannah’s parents in Phoenix, Arizona. Being away from their children would be heartbreaking but would also allow Brian and Susannah to focus on Brian’s fight to save his life. “Their (Susannah’s parents) willingness to step up and take the children is incredibly significant for Brian and Susannah,” said Mike. Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene. The couple has family to stay with in the area as well so they don’t have to make continual long trips back and forth. As of mid-December, Brian had undergone three of the four doses of chemotherapy, and his body is reacting relatively well. Mike Ashby says that tests are showing Brian has 80 to 90 percent less of the cancer markers since his initial diagnosis, an excellent sign for such and advanced state. The Ashbys say they have seen miracle after miracle so far during this difficult time. Though the cancer is in the latter stages and spread to Brian’s internal organs, it did not reach his brain, giving him a much better chance of survival. The second miracle was the turnout for Brian’s benefit and what that generosity means to the entire family. Even in his weakened state, Brian was able to make an appearance. From all accounts he was beyond shocked at the amount of support generated for him. Although he couldn’t stay the entire time, it was truly a day he will never forget. “It meant everything to him. When I was walking him out he stopped outside and just broke down,” said Mike. “He simply couldn’t process the amount of hope, faith and outpouring of support he just saw.” At the end of December Brian will undergo his fourth chemotherapy treatment. While still one of the most effective ways to fight cancer, the treatments are grueling, make the patient feel incredibly ill and typically take away almost all of the body’s energy and appetite. It’s something no one wishes to go through, especially four times. The Ashby family is hoping this will be the last time. After the last round of chemo, doctors will wait a week or so and run additional tests to see if the cancer is gone, in remission or still present. This will be a trying time but Brian will have the support of his loved ones, including his young children, who have since returned home. Family and friends say the children are doing well all things considered as is Susannah, the rock of support that Brian needs.

The Ashby family is still stunned at the support they received and are forever grateful to the community that they’ve been proud to call home now for six generations. “Linda and I can’t say thanks enough for the people of Bonners Ferry. It’s a truly delightful place to be and to be a part of,” said Mike.

“It’s pretty evident that this is a pretty special community. Whether you ask for help or not, you’re going to get the support,” said Andrakay. The Ashbys firmly believe that Brian’s fate is in God’s hands, and his mother Linda says all the changes and difficulties are all for good, despite the seriousness of the situation. Their faith and continued positive energy will see them through whatever outcome. As Brian enters his final round of chemotherapy and a vital couple of weeks, the family says there is one way that everyone can help support Brian in his battle. “Prayer. We’ve seen miracle after miracle, and I continue to only ask for prayer, period,” said Mike.

fter a year of searching North Idaho for a place to plant their roots, Luke and Nancy Croll discovered Bonners Ferry in September 2017. With faith guiding them, they knew that this was the right town for them and made the decision to raise their family here and call Bonners Ferry home. A little more than a year ago, in December 2017, Luke and Nancy became the proud owners of the longstanding Baby Go Round, which had been serving the Bonners Ferry community since 2010. “We love the business model. Every time we make a sale, someone in the community gets paid,” says Nancy. “We are so blessed every time we hear our customers say how thankful they are for this store! It is wonderful to provide a place for people to shop that is close by and inexpensive.” Just last month, the couple decided to change the name to Boundary Consignments to be more descriptive of what they do—more encompassing. “We waited a year to ensure people knew we hadn’t closed—that we were here to stay,” according to Nancy. The couple adds that they wanted the community to vote for the name, because they wanted people to feel like it

is their store. “Because it is theirs,” Nancy adds. “We love Bonners Ferry and so thankful to be a part of it!” At Boundary Consignments, they provide the Bonners Ferry community a great place to consign and shop clothing for children, women and men, as well as shoes, accessories, toys and baby equipment. In addition to the impeccable quality customers will find, the Crolls are pleased to offer their customers items at a low price point. “We think of ourselves as the family department store,” smiles Luke. “It’s our aim to always have every size of all the necessities in a good variety. We want people to be able to shop in one spot for their whole family and not break the bank.” It has been just more than a year since the Crolls took over the business, yet they’ve continued to hear positive feedback from those who stop in since day one. “We saw how much this store impacted the community and we wanted to keep that going,” says Nancy.

24

The Crolls have settled in well as business owners in the community, and they have been enjoying every minute of it. They are also involved in giving back to their community, donating to several local charities and helping wherever possible with sponsoring school and other local activities. Clothing that comes into the store with small stains and a little wear is donated to local clothing pantries; a true gift for those who are unable to purchase much-needed items for themselves or family members. Now that winter has officially arrived, and if you are still in need of those cold-weather items, now is the perfect time to head to Boundary Consignments. It’s the ideal place for families in Bonners Ferry to shop fashionable, quality items for the entire family—for a fraction of the retail price! “We are extremely thankful that God led us to this business for purchase. It is a perfect fit for us, and we love being a blessing to this community.” Luke and Nancy invite you to stop by the store Monday through Thursday 9am to 5pm and Friday and Saturday 10am to 4pm.

LOCAL GROUP BRINGS HOPE TO VETERANS ACTIVE HEROES NORTH IDAHO POSITIVELY IMPACTING THE BONNERS FERRY COMMUNITY BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

H

ere in Bonners Ferry we are blessed to have a closeknit community who comes together when others are in need. Many veterans call Bonners Ferry home, and one local organization is working to make a difference in our veterans and their families lives through Active Heroes North Idaho. “Active Heroes was started by U.S. Army Veteran Troy Yocum, who hiked across the U.S. after returning from Iraq, where his battle buddy committed suicide,” says Micah Hundley, Active Heroes national team leader. “He wanted to do this to honor his friend and also to raise awareness of the veteran suicide crisis in the U.S., which at the time (17-month hike, 2009-2011) was 18 a day. He hiked 7,800-plus miles and worked to raise awareness in each community he visited.” Since then, Carry The Fallen, a ruck march (hiking) event with a purpose by and for Active Heroes, a 501c3 charity coordinated by volunteer team leaders, has become a national movement to reduce veteran suicide. Teams ruck march for three, six, 12 or 22 hours while carrying weight

We want to spread the message that nobody is alone. There is a whole community network of support."

that symbolizes the burden that many veterans carry post-war or posttrauma. The ultimate purpose of Carry The Fallen is to reduce veteran suicide and assist military families. Veteran John Riddle of Bonners Ferry had an idea to bring Carry The Fallen to Bonners Ferry after attending a similar event in the Lewiston area that yielded low participation. “He knew the Bonners Ferry community could do it better,” says Kristin James, co-leader of Active Heroes North Idaho. "From there, John has built a team of like-minded individuals to move forward to not only bring Carry The Fallen ruck march to Bonners Ferry but also to bolster community support, resources and networking to help aid veterans and their families through difficult times and hardships all in hopes to eliminate veteran suicide, and realistically, suicide in general.

26

Active Heroes North Idaho was established in the spring of 2018, and last fall marked the inaugural Carry The Fallen in Bonners Ferry. The event took place September 15, 2018, starting at Log Inn Cabins and RV, and saw an impressive turnout for it being the first year of the event, with nearly 200 people in attendance including approximately 60 to 65 individuals participating in the three-hour ruck march. The closing ceremony was held after the march and had a community barbecue, beer garden, live music and kids’ activities including a bounce house, face painting and water gun target range. The goals was to garner support for the community, create camaraderie for military families in attendance and raise funds to support Bonners Ferry VFW post, Bonners Ferry DAV Chapter and Active Heroes initiatives. Active Heroes events are free for veterans, former military service members and military family members. Others are welcome and encouraged to donate to supporting the mission of eliminating veteran suicide. The event raised approximately $12,000, with $4,400 staying local.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

“Active Heroes North Idaho provides an organization and framework of support for veterans and military family members who may be facing issues from post-traumatic stress and other challenges faced after returning home,” states Micah. “As the organization grows, the impact will build to make everyone aware that there are people in the community who can be relied upon to help those who may be struggling or who might face issues in the future.” According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, 20 veterans commit suicide every day, a number which has declined slightly from a high of 22 in 2014. “This has to end, and Active Heroes North Idaho is actively working to reverse this trend in the area,” says Micah. “We say, one veteran suicide is one too many. There is already an impact in the area from our work where a life has been saved.” “One of the things I learned down in Lewiston … I met a guy on that march. We talked and exchanged information. He called me one night, and I think I spent about five hours talking with him. I’m pretty sure he was on the edge,” John recalls. “Hopefully people, as they’re marching next to each other, exchange information and get comradery going

27

It’s the Who, not the What – that matters most.

The primary purpose of Active Heroes is to reduce veteran suicide by: • Establishing camaraderie in communities to cope with Post Traumatic Stress (anger, depression, loneliness, substance abuse and suicidal tendencies) • Uniting veterans, families and supporters to care for each other in times of need • Developing a peer mentor and ambassador community of veterans, military families and civilians who support struggling families and/or veterans and publicizing at events

again and hopefully, if they’re ever on the edge or struggling, they’ll call you. They don’t have the brotherhood they used to have. With so many veterans in Bonners, I figured maybe somebody could use it.” Today, Active Heroes North Idaho is made up of six active team members; three are veterans, two have lost brothers killed in action and one has friends and family who currently serve. “We are all connected in some way,” says John. On Saturday, January 5, Active Heroes North Idaho and VFW Post 3622 are co-hosting their first annual Chili and Cornbread Cook-Off with family activities to raise support for veterans and first responders. You can find out more about the event in this issue’s Arts & Entertainment section on page 50. "We will continue to put together smaller events like the chili feed and others to bring folks together to make lasting bonds and memories to pull from when times get tough. We will also continue to provide help

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

and resources to local veterans in our community and surrounding areas and look forward to coordinating with other local veteran organizations to build a larger network for our area veterans and military families," Kristin says. "We sincerely appreciate all the help and support we have received from the community thus far and are grateful to be a part of it!" If you are interested in learning more about Active Heroes North Idaho, please contact John at 208.267.2932 or john.riddle@activeheroes.org. get this question often: “What is the difference between the products you use here at the spa and the ones I can buy at the store?” It is a valid question and one with many answers. As a costconscious consumer, I myself want to ensure I am getting the best-quality products and goods without the unnecessary expense and want the same for my clients. So, let’s break down the difference between medical-grade and store-bought or “over-the-counter” skin-care products. FDA: Medical grade (also known as pharmaceutical grade) is regulated by The Food and Drug Administration. This means that all products require extensive research and testing before they can be sold to you, the consumer. The ingredients and the strength of the ingredients listed on the packaging must be accurate, and the ingredients must do what they say they are going to do. For example, if you are purchasing a retinol cream (vitamin A) from your dermatologist for the purpose of lightening sun damage and easing fine lines, the product must be proven to treat these conditions before it is cleared by the FDA. Over-thecounter products, while less expensive, are under no regulations by the FDA. This means no research or testing is required to prove the product works. So, the anti-aging store-bought product with vitamin A may or may not actually give you results. Skin Anatomy: The stratum corneum is the top layer of the epidermis. It forms a barrier to protect underlying tissue from infection and dehydration, but it also holds on to those pesky dead skin cells, trapping dirt and causing a dull-looking complexion. Over-the-counter products contain molecules too big to penetrate the stratum corneum. Medical-grade products contain

smaller molecules and higher percentages of active ingredients, allowing them to penetrate down to the dermis where the real work is done.

MONTANASHEDCENTER.COM MONTANASHEDCENTER.COM

Marketing: Over-the-counter products rely on heavy marketing for sales. Think celebrities with flawless skin in commercials and magazines, pretty packaging and catchy slogans. Even expensive department-store brands are not necessarily providing you with a topquality, ingredient-rich product. Maybe they are, but there is no governing guideline to prove otherwise. I also guarantee you, behind every fresh-faced mid-40 celebrity on those commercials there is a laser treatment, some injectable or at least a medical-grade skin-care product or two. Medical-grade skin care is only sold under the licensing of a doctor, nurse practitioner or a medically trained aesthetician because of the strength of the products. Your practitioner is trained to address your skin-care concerns with the products most suited for you. They are not sold in stores because self-diagnosing your own skin conditions and treating them with the wrong active ingredients could be damaging to your skin. If your regimen is working for you, regardless of where you bought it, then stick to it! However, do your research on the products before you buy or ask a skin-care professional for advice. Skin-care products are not created equal.

Breathe New Life into

Your Home

Simple changes create a bold new look BY COLIN ANDERSON

R

emodeling a bathroom or kitchen can take weeks and really put a dent in your 2019 budget. Instead of tackling a major renovation, why not utilize a few simple tweaks to give your home a great new look in the new year?

Paint – The easiest and most cost-effective way to change up the look of your home is to add a splash of color to the walls. Variations are endless, and if after six months you aren’t digging the new shade, simply paint back over it again! Quality paint should only take about two coats and will dry overnight. A new color scheme can coincide with new corresponding décor and will help reflect your personality and individuality. Instead of replacing old wood cupboards, paint over them and add new hardware for a fresh look to your kitchen without spending thousands. Fixtures – Adding new fixtures to your hallways, kitchen or bathrooms instantly creates a new feel for your home. With so many models to choose from, you won’t have any trouble finding pieces that fit your style. New LED models will even help you save on light-bulb purchases—and your energy bill. Installation is surprisingly simple. Remember to turn off the breaker to the room and connect the proper wires. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with electrical, gather all the fixtures you would like replaced at once so a professional can tackle them all in a single day.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

32

Clean and Service – Preventative maintenance won’t beautify your home, but it will help keep it cleaner and help you avoid costly repair bills in the long run. Have your air-conditioning system serviced now before the big spring rush. Furnace filters get dirty quickly but are very cheap and easy to replace. Dirt, debris and allergens get stuck in the carpet, so bring in a professional carpet cleaner and/or a company to clean out your air ducts where even more dust, mold and mildew reside. For better-tasting water and cleaner ice, don’t forget to change out the refrigerator filter. A few filters and a couple of deep scrubs will have you breathing easier. Off-Season Purchases – It’s wintertime, but that doesn’t mean you can’t already get into the summer mood. Now is a great time to search for outdoor patio furniture, grills, chairs, lawn decorations and other accessories before prices start to rise in the spring. Gather a few planters and plan out what flowers you’ll want and be ready to go once the weather warms. Speak with a gardener or landscape architect early about any updates to the vegetation around your home. When the first hot sunny days arrive, you’ll already be relaxing outside while others are out shopping and wasting a beautiful day. The Front Door – Whether it’s friends, family or the package delivery driver, make a bold first impression with updates to your front door. Bold colors are on trend, and you need only about a quart to cover a wood door. Update your doorbell from whatever basic boring buzzer came with the house to something that better represents your personality. The same goes for the welcome mat;

Power Wash Exterior – Unfortunately, rain isn’t the best way to wash your home. Over the years all kinds of dust, grime and dirt stick to our exteriors. Hooking up a power washer to your hose and giving your siding and windows a good cleanse will bring new life to your home’s exterior. Clean windows allow for more natural light, something we call crave. Before you begin, know what type of water pressure your siding can withstand and be sure to be delicate around door and window frames. Special cleaners will help prevent quick buildup so you won’t have to make this an annual chore. Floating Shelves – If you never seem to have enough space and are tired of moving around heavy and bulky bookcases and dressers, install a few floating shelves for a modern touch and added space. Purchase shelving in whatever material, length and color you like. You can build your own support system, or there are many models that attach to a wall with no visible supports or hardware. Place books, photo frames, décor, candles or whatever else you like and ditch some of the jumbo furniture for better use of space.

A modern boutique with vintage charm

Storewide sale for two days only - January 18 & 19 Follow us on Facebook and Instagram

By Patty Hutchens

A goal without a plan is just a wish.

goals are. Then, bring them to life! They can cover anything that is important to you including spirituality, health, career, finances, relationships, travel and more.

It’s the New Year, which means we start making all those resolutions that many of us typically never follow through with. But what if you did something different this year? Creating a vision board can help keep you accountable and stay on track to achieve both your personal and professional goals, inspiring you and motivating you on a daily basis. After all, visualization is key when it comes to making your dreams come true.

When creating your vision board, for both your personal and professional goals, do not focus solely on the material aspect of things you want. Instead, think about how you want to feel. Use words that will encourage and inspire you. Your board, or boards, should be a visual representation of your dreams, goals and ideal life. Do the photos you choose make you feel happy or do you feel anxious when you look at them?

Before you start, make sure you have all you need on hand. You can use a cork board, poster board or pin board; just make sure it is something you will want to display so you don’t end up putting it in a closet. Also, you will want to have things like scissors, pins and a glue stick to assemble the board.

Mon-Fri 10am - 5pm | Sat 10am - 4pm | 7160 Main Street Bonners Ferry, ID | 208.267.8392

Jack Canfield, a motivational speaker and co-author of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series, wrote, “Your brain will work tirelessly to achieve the statements you give your subconscious mind. And when those statements are the affirmations and images of your goals, you are destined to achieve them.”

Decide just how creative you want to be. If you are crafty, you can utilize stickers and markers to decorate it, but if you just want to get down to business, you can forego all of that.

He has created a checklist for people who want to maximize the effectiveness of their vision board. Some of the items on his checklist include:

Next, think about what kinds of things will inspire you. Do you want to cut out photos and quotes from magazines or simply write them out and print out some photos from your computer? When considering your vision, do not limit yourself to magazines around your house. Go to a store that has a wide selection of reading materials. Perhaps photos from a travel magazine will help inspire and motivate you toward your goals more than the Newsweek sitting on your coffee table at home.

• Make sure the board depicts goals and dreams in all areas of your life that you would like to focus on. • When choosing images, do they represent the experiences, feelings and possessions you want to attract into your life? • Are there positive affirmations, inspirational words and quotes on your board? • Only use words and images that best represent your purpose and

When you have everything you think you will need to assemble your board, carve out a couple of hours to really sit and focus on what your

Make Your Vision of Beauty a Reality

your ideal future, and use words that inspire positive emotions. • Be selective on what you put on your board and avoid clutter. • Be sure your vision board is in a place where you can see it and study it at least a couple of times each day; visualizing, affirming, believing and internalizing your goals. • Be sure to include images that represent your achievements and express gratitude as your dreams begin to become a reality. • Record the day you made your vision board and create a new one each year. • See yourself living in the manner you have portrayed your life on your vision board. • Believe the items on your board are already yours when you look at them. • Express gratitude for the good that is already present in your life, celebrating and acknowledging goals you have achieved. • Never give up! (Note: For more information from Jack Canfield, log onto FreeSuccessStrategies.com.) When creating your vision board, it is recommended that you also pay attention to the process that you go through to do so. Are you spending a great deal of time searching for the ideal photo? That may be an indication that you are a perfectionist, which can sometimes be an obstacle to reaching your goals. Or what if you keep putting off the creation of the board? It may be a sign that you are overwhelmed with your obligations to others and do not carve out enough time for yourself.

Our real Coolsculpting results

You may be surprised to learn that vision boards are not just for those to display in their homes. In a 2016 article in Forbes Magazine they reported, “Successful small-business owners say they started their businesses because they had a vision and followed it. And as they pushed forward with their plans it was important for them to keep their eyes on the big picture.

We Offer: INJECTABLES & FILLERS

• Almost two-thirds of small-business owners believe that visualizing goals helps them map and develop their business plans. • One in five small-business owners used a vision board or other visual representation when starting their business; 76 percent of those business owners said that today their business is where they envisioned it would be when they started it. • Eighty-two percent of small-business owners that used a vision board from the get-go reported that they have accomplished more than half the goals they included on that board.”

As we usher in 2019, don’t write down your resolutions and simply stick them in a drawer to be discovered later in the year. Instead, take time to thoroughly evaluate both your personal and professional goals. Have fun creating a vision board and instead make that New Year’s resolution to make a new vision board each year. Before you know it, you will be living the life you dreamed of!

How to Succeed in the New Year

Fitness tips to help you on your way

NEW at Two Tones!

- BY JILLIAN CHANDLER 2019 is here, and with it comes that expected—and at most times dreaded—New Year’s resolution. At the top of many lists is to get healthy, work out more and eat right. Many start off the year in full force, but by the time February and March hit, they’re back to their old bad habits. Make this year different. Let’s make it a success! Here are some simple ways to not only start the year off right but continue all year long.

01. Make your goal attainable

Bringing flavors from around the world using local ingredients. Open: Mon-Sun 11am - 9pm Sunday Brunch served 10am-2pm Find Us on Facebook: Two Tones Cafe

• All You Can Eat Sunday Brunch will continue by popular demand! 10am-2pm every Sunday. • Family Style Dinners to go. (Call ahead or order online) • Check Out Our Daily Specials featured on Facebook. “Like” our page so you don’t miss out!

208.417.3040 6536 Main Street Bonners Ferry, ID

How many of us decide that starting January 1, we are going to do a 180 when it comes to our fitness routine? In many cases, due to our fast-paced lifestyles, work and family, our goal is just not attainable—at least not in the amount of time you plan before you start seeing changes in your physical appearance. Plan to make just one change—one change in your lifestyle to better your health. If you found yourself completely putting off any type of intentional exercise in 2018, for 2019, dedicate 30 to 60 minutes each day to walking, whether on a treadmill, outdoors with your dog, up and down your stairs, etc. Before you know it, you’ll be jogging—then running! And you’ll feel great doing it!

Happy New Year! All Remaining Christmas Merchandise is 25% off during January

02. Schedule it in

Now Carrying: Momma Sue’s locally made hats in infant to adult sizes

If you set a time aside each day and make it part of your daily routine, it will make it that much easier to follow through and not make excuses. Whether it’s first thing in the morning, on your lunch break or in the evening that works best for your lifestyle, dedicating a set time for yourself will help you accomplish your goal. If you are one who carries around a physical day planner or use the calendar on your phone, schedule in the time as a reminder, and it will make you less likely to schedule an event in its place.

208-267-7280

03. Stay motivated

Keep your eye on the prize. Whether it’s fitting into that new bathing suit you purchased for your spring or summer vacation or wanting to complete that upcoming 5k strong, don’t let anything stop you. The important thing is to stay positive, push through any and all obstacles you may encounter, whether physical or mental, and you will ultimately reach your goal. And if that scale is preventing you from keeping a positive mindset, toss it. It’s just a number and not necessarily a reflection of all of your hard work.

MY MUST-SEE STOP IS STANLEY PARK. DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER YOU CAN BIKE OR HIKE AROUND THE SCENIC PARK, WHICH IS A POINT SURROUNDED BY WATER ON ALL SIDES. PLAN TO VISIT THE VANCOUVER AQUARIUM LOCATED IN THE PARK.

Vancouver’s North Shore The perfect base to explore all the area has to offer STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

V

ancouver’s North Shore is located just across Burrard Inlet from the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, making it a convenient base to explore all the area has to offer. Lodging is more reasonably priced on the North Shore, and with access to Vancouver’s public transportation, it is easy to get to wherever you want to go. The Holiday Inn North Vancouver looks like a chateau and is easily accessed from Highway 1 and is family friendly. For this trip, plan a day in Vancouver, a day on the Northshore and a day exploring the Sea to Sky Highway. The North Shore Coastal mountains practically push the town into Burrard Inlet. It is such a contrast to the large city across the inlet and the North Shore with all the outdoor activities and scenery nestled right next to the suburb. Begin your day at the Lonsdale Quay Market. Located right on the water, the market is a mix of shops, an international food court and a farmers market. Every food choice we tried at the food court was excellent and freshly prepared. Make sure to explore the area as well with the shops, breweries and the new Polygon Gallery. The waterfront is interesting, especially with all the shipping activity for the busy port. In the afternoon, head to the must-see attraction on the North Shore—the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. January is a great time to visit because Canyon Lights is still going on through January 27, 2019, and you won’t have all the crowds. With the early winter sunsets, you can do a day and nighttime visit. Explore and hike the park then plan an early dinner at the new Cliffhouse Restaurant and Bar for a West-Coast inspired menu. Afterward, head back out to the park, which now looks totally different with

with your feet dangling as you fly over Canada from east to west. Special effects like wind, mist and scents make you really feel like you are flying.

If you still have any energy left or you can make the time to visit the first night you arrive, head up to Grouse Mountain. Take the gondola up to the top for a winter wonderland. For your first stop, look for a glowing light tunnel. The Light Walk is open throughout the winter and loops around Blue Grouse Lake. You will need snowshoes or snow cleats, which you can rent at the Outpost. Enjoy the outdoor skating rink or some snowshoe fondue, which you can set up with your family of friends. It includes snowshoe rental, headlamps and an experienced guide. After your adventure enjoy cheese, broth and chocolate fondue at the Altitude Bistro.

Located across the street is the Vancouver Visitors’ Center. Stop in for maps and to get information on the city. There are world-class museums, a vibrant Chinatown, parks and much more. The seabus terminal is located with connections to a variety of public transit where you can reach just about anywhere you want to go in the city. My must-see stop is Stanley Park. Depending on the weather you can bike or hike around the scenic park, which is a point surrounded by water on all sides. Plan to visit the Vancouver Aquarium located in the park. The indoor portion of the aquarium has a variety of exhibits and tanks. The Graham Amazon gallery is a unique experience in the winter. You step through the door, the temperature and humidity soar, and you feel like you are walking through a rainforest. Add in an anaconda and other scary creepy crawlies, and the effect is complete. Rain or shine, you can visit the outdoor section of the aquarium and see penguins, seals, sea lions, walruses and otters. Check the schedule for various feedings and shows which highlight the animals. The sea lions are especially engaging and love to “talk” to the visitors.

Vancouver From the Lonsdale Quay you can catch the Seabus to Vancouver. This is a fun, low-cost harbor cruise. When you arrive on the Vancouver side, it is just a short walk to Canada Place. This is an iconic Vancouver landmark. Head to the west promenade where you will find the Canada Trail, stroll down the trail and learn about Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories. At the end you will reach North Point, where there are incredible views of the North Shore mountains, the Port of Vancouver, Stanley Park and the Burrard Inlet. Next visit the Port Discovery Centre and learn about Canada’s busiest port and all that entails. The FlyOver Canada Experience is a simulated flight that has you suspended in the air

had scones, a tuna melt on fresh French bread and a grilled cheese with tomato. Great coffee, and everything was so good! After breakfast, begin your drive on the Sea to Sky Highway. I think this is one of the most scenic drives in North America—just stunning views even on a rainy day.

top, enjoy the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge—which is not for the feint of heart. There are multiple viewing platforms; some as close as the lodge and others reached by hiking trails. You can do some winter hiking or snowshoeing. Kids will love the tube park.

Your first stop is Britannia Beach to tour the Britannia Mine Museum. This is an outstanding tour! Our guide, Paula, was knowledgeable and fun. After watching a short movie about the history of the mine, you take a tour of the mine riding a train into the mine and learning how the copper was mined. It was very interesting to learn about the conditions miners experienced. The tour also includes a tour of the large mine building where the copper and other minerals were extracted from the ore. Allow yourself plenty of time to explore the sight once your tour is done. There is so much to see! The gold mining was fun because they really go all out with the equipment and warmer water, which is nice in the winter. They also seed the dirt so you really do have the opportunity to find gold or other gemstones. I have to admit, it was pretty exciting to see a flake of gold appear in your pan.

When finished, you can head into Squamish, which has a variety of shops and restaurants. Before you head back to your hotel, make sure to drive a few minutes out of town to the Brackendale Eagles Provincial Park and Eagle Viewing Shelter to view North America’s largest collection of wintering Bald Eagles. From the Eagle Run Dike, you can easily view the Bald Eagles with your bare eyes. They stand out against the bare winter trees. Well worth a quick stop. There are plenty of interpretive panels to learn more about the eagles, and on weekends, volunteers are available to answers questions.

Continue a couple of more miles down the road to the Sea and Sky Gondola. This park offers a ride to the top with breathtaking views of Howe Sound on your way up on the 10-minute gondola ride. Once at the

January is a great month to visit Vancouver’s North Shore and the surrounding area. Off-season allows for a slower pace and less crowds. Insider tips: Many area attractions offer a family rate for two adults and two children. Also note, Tourism Vancouver’s Dine Out Vancouver Festival takes place January 18 through February 3, 2019. A variety of dining experiences are available at all price points and are located in both Vancouver and the North Shore.

It’s Time to get Cooking … and Tasting! Chili and Cornbread Cook-Off to benefit local veterans

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

There’s nothing better than chili and cornbread to warm you up on a cold winter’s day in Bonners Ferry, and on Saturday, January 5, you won’t want to miss the Veteran and First Responder Chili and Cornbread Cook-Off. The event is a team effort put on by Active Heroes North Idaho, VFW and Bonners Ferry First Responders and will take place at Memorial Hall at the downtown fairgrounds. Starting at 1pm. Open to businesses and individuals, bring plenty of your award-winning chili (medium or spicy) or cornbread for attendees to taste and vote for their favorite. They are hoping for a nice turnout of about 200 people—or more! There is no cost to participate or to attend the event, though donations will be accepted to benefit local veterans who are in need of help. There will be a first place trophy for both categories. In addition to this afternoon of great food and fellowship, there will be fun to be had with a corn-hole competition, guess the beans in the jar, 50/50 drawing, face painting and more. “[Active Heroes is] a team of like-minded individuals built to bolster community support, resources and networking to help aid veterans and their families through difficult times and hardships, all in hopes to eliminate veteran suicide, and realistically, suicide in general,” says Kristin James, who is a member of Active Heroes and co-leader of the event. “We want to spread the message that nobody is alone. There is a whole community network of support.” For more information about the event or Active Heroes North Idaho, or to sign up to participate, contact John Riddle at 208.267.2932 or john.riddle@activeheroes.org. “We will continue to put together smaller events like the chili feed and others to bring folks together to make lasting bonds and memories to pull from when times get tough,” says Kristin.
