Volunteer Recognition Mother of fallen North Idaho soldier awarded ‘Spirit of Idaho Award’. By Colin Anderson.

EIGHT MONTHS AGO Teresa Hart had an idea to help veterans and families of current military members serving overseas with everything from clothes, toys, and towels, to a suit for job interviews, appliances, and a computer. What started out as Teresa and her laptop has transformed into 2,900 square feet of donated goods, an eight person board of directors, and an upcoming 501 (c)(3) designation. The help Hart’s organization, Newby-Ginnings, is offering isn’t just being noticed locally, but on the state and national level as well. At a recent ceremony, Teresa Hart was given the ‘Spirit of Idaho’ award by Senator Mike Crapo. The award is given to Idaho residents who demonstrate a commitment to improving their community and serving their fellow citizens. “What an incredible idea to help those who put their lives on the line for us and help make sure these heroes are not forgotten,” remarked Senator Crapo. Flanked by the Patriot Guard and Combat Veteran Riders, Teresa received her recognition as well as an American flag that had been flown over the capital. Senator Crapo also presented Teresa a second flag

which will fly over the Ronald D. Rankin Veterans Memorial Plaza at the Kootenai County Courthouse in honor of her son, Nick Newby, who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

“What an incredible idea to help those who put their lives on the line for us and help make sure these heroes are not forgotten...” Just a month into a move to a larger space, Newby-Ginnings is again overflowing with donations. The new space off Government Way is nearly full and there are still two 30 foot trailers waiting to be unpacked as well. “Sometimes I come here and just shake my head in amazement and can’t believe all of this was donated,” said Teresa. Veterans and families of active duty military are welcome to stop by and take what they need at absolutely no cost. There are linens, kitchen supplies, clothes, toys, appliances, medical supplies, computers and much more. Newby-Ginnings is also a place for people to drop in, share a cup of coffee, a laugh, a cry, and some company.

“There’s always a group of people hanging out here. They may be from different walks of life but all are part of the greater military family,” said Teresa. Newby-Ginnings has also recently partnered with Goodwill to provide furnishings to newly housed veterans. Goodwill provides the veteran with a place to live, and NewbyGinnings fills the home with furniture, utensils, and everyday necessities. To date Newby-Ginnings has helped more than 150 individuals and networked additional services for dozens more. As the organization grows, it hopes to soon purchase or acquire a moving truck for larger donations and deliveries. Currently Teresa and her husband use their own truck and trailer for deliveries, limiting the times they can drop off items. You can drop off clean working household goods or make a cash donation on site. You can also support Newby-Ginnings by participating in the Dan Kleckner Golf Classic this coming August. www.Newby-Ginnings.org 208.660.4601 147 E. WHILE SELKIRK GLASS AND CABINETS has been around for a long time, there are changes taking place there that will make your shopping experience even greater than before. Selkirk Glass and Cabinets is part of Ponderay Design Center, which also includes Sandpoint Furniture and Carpet One. Ponderay Design Center recently moved its window coverings department from Carpet One to Selkirk Glass and Cabinets and has recently been selected to be a Hunter Douglas Gallery. Selkirk is now the ONLY HD Gallery from Missoula to Spokane.

Your new Hunter Douglas gallery. By Patty Hutchens.

Previously a Hunter Douglas Showcase Dealer, Selkirk Glass and Cabinet’s expansion to a Hunter Douglas Gallery provides the retailer greater buying power, passing on better values to its customers. It also allows a customer to see how the product works and looks in a window setting. The Gallery has exclusively well-designed displays that best show the complete product. People can actually come in and touch and see the products instead of just a sample. In addition they offer a Right Choice Promise, which means if the customer is not satisfied

We Set the Standard! with their purchase, whether it is the color or style, they can exchange it for another HD product. Hunter Douglas Galleries are qualified to offer a limited lifetime warranty on ALL Hunter Douglas products. Selkirk has full time certified installers and technicians on staff to insure great customer service, even long after the sale. The move of their window coverings from Carpet One to Selkirk Glass and Cabinet made perfect sense for Ponderay Design Center since their windows and doors are located at Selkirk Glass and Cabinet making it more convenient for customers. But there is much more to Selkirk Glass and Cabinets than the name implies. They have everything one needs to design or remodel their kitchen and bathroom including cabinets, countertops, cabinet hardware, shower doors, mirrors, doors and windows.  For custom glass, they can do anything with the exception of vehicles. Custom glass shower doors are their specialty! They have recently added many new door styles and new cabinet displays that are sure to inspire their customers. But it is their focus on customer service of which they are most proud. “What really sets us apart from others is that we are highly service oriented,” said Manager Eric Jeffres, adding that his staff has the expertise, talent and skill that allows the store to follow through on any project to the very end. “Trust is something that we value and is highly important to us.” Selkirk Glass and Cabinets recently added two new members to their highly qualified staff. Annie Nye is an interior designer who moved to the area with her husband and two children from Bozeman. “Annie

has a high level of expertise,” said Jeffres, referring to her National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). While in Bozeman, Annie worked for an architect for seven years followed by 10 years as an in-store interior designer. She feels blessed to be able to offer her expertise to her customers. “I work with such a great group of people. It’s really fun to come to work,” said Annie. She and Assistant Manager Karin Corey are both certified by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Roxanne Buck joined the staff in March after several years at ProBuild and Alpine Lumber in Sandpoint and works in the area of windows, doors and interior trim. “I love the upbeat attitude and the focus on customer service,” said Roxanne of her work at Selkirk Glass and Cabinets. “We all have our specialties, and we are all good at what we do. There’s a lot of experience and knowledge in this building.” With the assistance of designers, computer programs and the ability to have people see your project through start to finish, customers know that they are taken care of. And if the customer has a designer he or she is working with, the staff works closely with them to make sure all their customers’ needs and desires are met. Stop in to see the new Selkirk Glass and Cabinets. You will definitely be inspired!

PURPLE POTTY

Livestock Market Where your cattle always bring more.

Making the rounds for Relay for Life. By Patty Hutchens. CHANCES ARE GREAT that you have seen it around town. The purple potty that seems to magically appear and disappear in front of local businesses. A new type of public restroom? Thankfully that is not the case. It is just one of many fundraisers taking place in anticipation of the First Annual Bonners Ferry Relay for Life. The event will take place from August 22-23 at the Bonners Ferry High School track and already appears that it will be a huge success. Several teams are doing their part to help raise funds for the Relay, which benefits the American Cancer Society and whose proceeds go to support research and programs for cancer patients. While the money raised goes to the American Cancer Society, something many do not realize is that the American Cancer Society’s programs are alive and well and doing much to support those with cancer right here in Bonners Ferry and throughout North Idaho. According to chairperson Tamra Hiatt, there are many people from Boundary County who access American Cancer Society funds to assist with overnight stays while traveling to chemotherapy, radiation and other medical appointments in Coeur d’Alene and Spokane. There is also Community Cancer Services in Sandpoint, a non-profit organization that provides emotional and financial support for residents of Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry who are battling cancer, which also utilizes funds from the American Cancer Society to support local residents. To date there are already 17 teams registered, a total of 110 participants and over $10,000 raised for the Bonners Ferry Relay for Life.

According to Hiatt, whose team is responsible for the “purple potty” fundraiser, businesses can donate to Hiatt’s Relay for Life team to have the purple fixture removed or sent to another business. “Our goal is to flush out cancer,” said Hiatt who is pleased with the response to the event that she was instrumental in bringing to the Bonners Ferry community. In addition to the purple toilet, there have been an overnight camping event with a barbeque, a “jail ‘n bail,” and various other fundraisers that have helped raise funds in advance of the August 22nd event.

in Focus

Article and photos by Robert Lavala. “HERE YE, HERE YE shouts King James (Trocke) to an enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch the spectacle of electric guitars, keyboards and swordplay. The stage is set with a backdrop of stone, and the executioner stands with a double-edged ax ready to dispense... well, really this is totally a family-friendly show with all the trappings of a Medieval theater production. There are sword fights, archers at the ready, King and Queen, Prince and Princess all performing to the driving rock and roll of the talented band. Each member of the cast, The Alliance, is dressed in period-authentic costume and the performance is well rehearsed. All characters from King to child dancer are on their mark and ready to give the crowd what they have come for: The epic battle between light and darkness. When asked about the deeper meaning behind the Alliance, King James said,

“This is our crusade: To bring a positive message to everyone. We want to show that concepts such as honor, respect, loyalty, courageousness, and trust are virtues we can embody today.” He went on to say that “...there has always been a fight between light and darkness. We emphasize the fulfilling aspects of living in the light.”

EVENT

Run For The Fallen

Remembering our fallen soldiers. By Melody Knaggs. IN 2008 A GROUP of dedicated runners ran from Fort Irwin, CA to Arlington National Cemetery in honor of the many soldiers that had lost their lives fighting for our country. The goal, at the time, was to run one mile for every soldier, sailor, airman and Marine killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. That single run has now developed into Run for the Fallen, and their continued goal is to have all 50 states participating in an annual run or walk of remembrance of the fallen men and women with ties to each specific state.

James has been studying and playing guitar since his early teens, and his wife Coleen has loved music from a very young age being influenced by her father who was a professional musician. Coleen began playing keyboards with The Alliance in Japan in 2012. The current iteration of the band has been playing together for about a year, although watching them perform you would think it has been much longer. Each of the musicians has a polished and professional demeanor lending to the show’s success. When asked about the acting side of their performance, James explained that there are three levels to the Alliance’s repertoire. The first stage is geared towards smaller venues that only want the band to perform. The second level is what they have brought to regional events such as the Bonners Ferry’s Rusty Moose Tavern where the band performed while set to a backdrop of stone, props and a cast of costumed medieval characters. The third level is a full-blown theatrical performance with scenes and stage changes and is held in a more controlled environment. The last level would be akin to a large production of a Shakespeare play only set to rock and roll music. The venue would lend to the dramatic effect of the medieval rock show as lighting and sound play a vital role in portraying the intense conflict of the script.

Over 180,000 miles have been collectively run in remembrance of those who have fallen since 9/11/2001. Each year, since the run across America, runners from around the world have joined Run for the Fallen in memory of our fallen warriors. Idaho’s Run for the Fallen includes fallen heroes from Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn. The cause also recognizes the service and sacrifice of ALL active duty deaths. On Sunday, July 27, we invite everyone to meet at Veterans’ Memorial Park in front of the Library at 8am for a 5k course that will head towards the Wildlife Refuge and loop back to the park. There is no charge to participate, and if you would like a t-shirt they will be available for a $5 donation. The event will kick off with a short opening ceremony with the presentation of the colors, national anthem and reading of the names as the Patriot Guard Riders escort the participants of the race to the starting line. A small ceremony will be held after most of the participants have finished.

When asked what the future holds for The Alliance Rock Band, James excitedly outlined what would certainly be a bright future for the band and its members. “We are hoping to be headliners both locally and nationally, and Las Vegas has a wonderful show at the Excalibur Hotel. I could see us playing for a venue like that,” he said. “Disney would be another place where this band would have a excellent opportunity to shine.” You can find more information about the band at www.thealliancerockband.com. The website also features an online store where you can purchase CDs, t-shirts and other band memorabilia. James was also quick to mention that Alliance is always looking for more Lords and Ladies to join in the fun. Be sure to look for the next show, and who knows, after seeing the show you may join the quest.

It’s Back! Kootenai River Days returns after 12 year hiatus. By Robert Lavala.

FOR THIRTY-FIVE YEARS the Kootenai River Days welcomed exciting events, people and businesses to participate in a wide range of challenges and family-friendly performances. Now, after a twelve year hiatus, the Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce has decided to bring back this wonderful tradition. At first blush, anyone familiar with the River Days event will see that several key events/competitions are conspicuously absent from the lineup. Team raft races, logger events and the rodeo are on that list and, according to planning coordinators Tamra and Wendy Hiatt, the 2015 planning committee will seek to incorporate more of these types of events. “The Rodeo, the Rod Benders Car Club and the logger events all revolve around a circuit,”explained Wendy. “The Chamber and the planning committee will be seeking a better time in the Summer for next year’s event so that all of the ‘staple events’ can be added back to the line up.” As it stands now, the three day event, which begins on Friday, July 25th, is packed with fun. Many local events that we all enjoy are rolling into the River Days venue to show a cohesive effort to bring back the famed Kootenai River Days. With the current list of participants, there promises to be something for everyone. Some of the key events include the Family Fun Night on Friday night; The Pearl Theater is hosting a production of ‘Little Women’ all weekend; there will be a 26’ wide screen set up at Memorial Park (Fairgrounds) for a movie-in-the-park night featuring the 2014 rendition of ‘The Lone Ranger’; and the ever-popular ‘Bike & Hike on the Dike’ is Saturday morning promoted by the local Search and Rescue. And then there is everyone’s favorite - the Pancake Breakfast at the Bonners Ferry Airport. On Saturday, Main Street will be closed to traffic and many local businesses will be offering food and drink specials. The Police Department has even relaxed the rules to allow open containers for the day’s events. Special events on Saturday include a performance 18   Bonners Ferry Living Local | www.BonnersFerryLiving.com

This year many have come forward to help get the beloved event back in the public eye. When asked if other communities will participate, the coordinators said that this first year back would more than likely be local folks and businesses. However, as the event takes hold once again, communities such as Sandpoint, Clark Fork, Troy and Libby will definitely be a part of the competitive teams that vie for prizes and bragging rights at Kootenai River Days.

Weekend Getaway Lake Roosevelt. By Colin Anderson.

IN NORTH IDAHO WE ARE BLESSED with many incredible lakes including Lake Coeur d’Alene, Hayden Lake, and Lake Pend Oreille. Each has its own beauty, but perhaps none carry as much varied scenery as another giant lake to the West. Lake Roosevelt is the result of the 1941 creation of the Grand Coulee dam along the Columbia River. This created a 130 mile long lake filled with incredible recreational opportunities. The lake is bordered by the Colville and Spokane Indian Reservations as well as the Colville National Forest. While surrounded by forest and trees near Kettle Falls, further south you’ll find incredible geological formations and miles of sandy beaches. A day is simply not enough time to explore this paradise so plan on going by boat or hopping campgrounds. CAMPING Lake Roosevelt has 27 designated campsites. Each site has a paved parking space large enough for most RVs, fire ring, and a picnic table. Most of the locations have flush toilets and running water, while others have wells and pit toilets. There are no hookups in the campgrounds so those with RVs wanting power will have to bring their own. Camping is $10 per night, and those looking to book sites for parties of 25 or more should do so using the website www. reserve.gov. One of my favorite campsites is Hawk Creek Campground. From Spokane, take Highway 2 to Davenport and turn north on Highway 25. After about 17 miles you’ll take a left on Larene Road, followed by a right onto Geissler Road. After a couple miles you’ll turn left onto Indian Creek Road. From here the campsite is marked about a mile ahead. The main attraction here is Hawk Creek Falls which seemingly come out of nowhere. The water level varies greatly here from a tiny trickle to a full stream depending on the time of year. This is also a popular fishing access when water levels are right, and when the water level drops many people fish from shore here as well. There are several hikes you can take from the

campground. You can follow a fisherman’s trail about 20 minutes and you’ll soon open up to a beautiful view of the lake. There are sandy beaches here where you can park and read a book or take a quick dip. Swimmers should use caution as the drop off is steep. Further to the North there are half a dozen sites around Kettle Falls where you can visit the Sherman Pass National Scenic Byway, Fort Colville, and St. Paul’s Mission - one of the oldest churches in the state of Washington. BY BOAT The best way to explore all this area has to offer is by water. If you’re a boat owner you have any number of places from which to launch, all depending on what you want to see and do. Lake Roosevelt is especially popular with fishermen, as it’s known to produce consistent numbers of walleye, rainbow trout, kokanee, and small mouth bass. Know that tribal fishing licenses might be required if you cross a reservation. Check with Washington Fish and Wildlife before planning where to drop your line.

Lake Roosevelt is especially popular with fishermen, as it’s known to produce consistent numbers of walleye, rainbow trout, kokanee, and small mouth bass. If you have a long weekend, you can pull up your boat to many campsites along the lake or simply run up onto a beach and sleep under the stars. If you aren’t a boat owner, take on the ultimate staycation by renting a houseboat for up to seven days. The Marinas at Seven Bays and Kettle Falls are popular launching points. Most houseboats come with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, full kitchens, sun decks, and a few even have built in hot tubs. Go at your own pace and enjoy the comforts of home while spending a quiet night on the water. Our National Parks are some of our most treasured areas and are meant to be enjoyed by all generations. Lake Roosevelt is one of 390 parks with such a designation, and it’s truly wonderful to have such a place so close to home. For more information visit www.nps.gov/laro.

Middle-Aged Musings “Just go at your own pace...” Yeah, right. By Teresa Pesce.

This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. IN GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES an often heard instruction is, “Just go at your own pace.” Many fitness class leaders say that. What else are they going to say? “Go away”?

themselves into sitting positions any way they possibly could – with little or no effect on their abdominals and quite a lot of strain on their necks.

Should they publicly cull you from the herd and tell you to go to the “Heaven Help Them” exercise class where a single sit-up is considered a triumph? So they welcome you, and once you’re there it’s a little hard to participate for a total of five minutes in a 60-minute class, so you push yourself. It’s only human to want to keep up! I’ve even seen classes of veteran exercisers trying to keep up with their instructor as he did multiple sets of 50 perfect sit-ups, while the participants gradually weakened and were pulling, heaving, hauling and hoisting

Once I overheard an athletic young woman in her early twenties tell a fellow exerciser that after a particular exercise class, her gluteal muscles were so sore she couldn’t sit down on a toilet seat for three days. If I pushed myself to keep up with a class like that, I wouldn’t be out of the ICU for three days. So what should one do? If you want to be part of a class, get stubborn and go at your own pace, just as the leader suggested! If you do three

And there’s another thing about it – if you go as slowly as is good for you, you’ll be able to increase your repetitions soon, which is far better than if you strain yourself to keep up but fall short, and get discouraged and give up! sit-ups properly, you may well have done better than someone flailing out 50 of them under group pressure. And there’s another thing about it – if you go as slowly as is good for you, you’ll be able to increase your repetitions soon, which is far better than if you strain yourself to keep up but fall short, and get discouraged and give up!

quote here

Be strong! Be brave! Don’t give in to the temptation to keep up with the throng as an instructor carols out for everyone to do three sets of 25 abdominals, followed by another three sets of 25 abdominals. Bring a good book with you, do as many repetitions as you can, and then stop and read quietly. (After all, there’s nothing wrong with improving your mind along with your body.) Open a bottled water and hydrate. Maybe if we all do this often enough, others in the class may be emboldened to respect their limits and join us until the exercise room becomes a library nook of sip-broken silence, and the instructor realizes they need to modify the routine. Conclusion? Even if our middle-aged versions of things are a bit different, they are valid and they work! Join up or not, but never, never, never give up! Founder of Sandpoint Onstage, Teresa Pesce is dedicated to supporting and promoting everyone in our community with theatrical gifts, whose age is irrelevant and whose only “weight” is the impact of their art.

Medicaid

Clearing up the misconceptions. By Bruce Weaver, MPA, PA-C. Owner, AAging Better In-Home Care. MYTHS ABOUND WHEN it comes to understanding a state program called Medicaid. Most of us know about Medicare, which covers hospitalizations, medical bills and prescriptions for those over 65 years of age.

Authentic

isine Mexican Cu

However, many are not aware that there is another program called Medicaid that will pay, among other things, services for in-home care when seniors become too frail to care for themselves. This program is funded by state funds along with matching funds from the federal government. But the catch for most individuals is that this program is based on income levels, and this is where many misconceptions arise.

... health departments across the nation are finding that paying for certain Medicaid-eligible residents to stay in nursing homes is far more expensive than paying for their care at home.

314 North Second Avenue Sandpoint, Idaho 83864 www.sandpointjalapenos.com 208.263.2995

One of the more common myths is that you have to give away or sell most of your resources to get Medicaid. The truth is that a person is permitted to own some property and still be eligible for Medicaid. The trick comes in knowing what is “countable” and what is “noncountable” under Medicaid rules. A certain amount of equity in a couple’s primary home can be non-countable in determining whether the husband or wife (or both) are eligible for assistance from Medicaid. And there are other types of non-countable property, such

as extensive funeral planning and burial spaces purchased before a couple passes away. In essence, a person doesn’t need to be completely “broke” or without assets to become Medicaid eligible. Another common myth encountered by families considering whether to place mom or dad in a nursing home is that Medicare will cover the cost. In fact, Medicare only pays for a small amount of the care provided by nursing homes in this country. Many families and elderly are surprised to learn this. Medicare only pays if you’re discharged from a hospital after at least a three-day stay. And if you still need skilled nursing care after a period of close to three months, you will have to pay privately for it unless you happen to have a long-term care insurance policy that covers nursing home costs—or unless you can qualify for Medicaid. In contrast, almost all surveys of baby boomers or elderly adults show that “aging in place” in their homes is far more preferable than being moved into a nursing home when illness or frailty becomes a problem. In addition, health

departments across the nation are finding that paying for certain Medicaid-eligible residents to stay in nursing homes is far more expensive than paying for their care at home. Because of this, Idaho’s Department of Health & Welfare is working toward approving more residents for services at home under the care of a Medicaid-approved Home Care company. When considering care at home versus a nursing home, contact the local Medicaid unit to determine the person’s eligibility. Secondly, researching approved Home Care agencies in the area allows a family or individual to find out exactly what services are offered. And, finally, consulting with an elder law attorney would provide information on the consequences of accepting Medicaid. With proper preparations and planning, aging at home can be cost-effective, safe and satisfying.
