THEY ARE THE TRUE American heroes. Our U.S. military who spend months, even years, away from their families fighting to keep us safe at home and abroad. Some pay the ultimate price and others come back changed forever. And then there are our firefighters and law enforcement officers. How many times have we heard in the last several months of police being shot and firefighters facing life-threatening situations while fighting not only structure fires, but the massive forest fires we have experienced? Unfortunately, many of us are guilty of taking our freedom and safety for granted. We go about our lives while husbands, wives and children fear their loved one may not return when they go out the door or board the military plane to go overseas. We are truly one of the greatest countries in the world, and it is these people for whom we should be grateful.

BadgerPRIDE! BONNERS FERRY HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BY PATTY HUTCHENS | PHOTOS COURTESY OF JASON DUCHOW

I

t was a first for Bonners Ferry High School baseball and is certainly something to be celebrated. For the first time in the school’s history, this year’s varsity baseball team was crowned State champions.

“I don't think we had a weakness in this year’s team. The team batted an incredible .390 at State, and pitching and defense was phenomenal,” said Head Coach Tom Turpin. “The boys have played together for a long time, and we competed against teams bigger than us throughout the year to prepare us for this opportunity.” Coach Turpin has coached 18 years for Bonners Ferry High School, starting in 2001 as an assistant and taking over the head coaching position in 2003. “We had 14 players in the varsity program and a total of 22 [players] this year—11 seniors, four juniors and the rest were sophomores and freshmen,” said Turpin. With so many seniors, there was a lot of experience on the varsity team, and the fact they were able to win the State Championship this year speaks to not just the amazing season this year but their hard work and dedication over the last several seasons. The team has won four straight Intermountain League titles along with two of the last three District I titles. They took third place in state in 2016 and second last year after losing the championship in what Turpin calls a heartbreaker of a game. “I think the overall experience and determination of wanting to get back to the championship game this year was huge,” he said of one of the motivating factors for the team. Turpin explains that the State Championship format is set up as a bracket

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

and one must win all three games during the three-day period to win the State Championship. “Our first opponent, Payette Pirates, was ranked No. 1 in 3A baseball rankings at the end of the season. We drew them the first game and had a 5-1 lead going into the last inning. In fact, our pitcher was throwing a no hitter until two infield singles in the seventh inning,” said Turpin. “We prevailed and ended up playing the Kimberly Bulldogs in game two and won a slugfest 19-12. We scored nine runs in the first inning, and they ended up tying the game in the fifth inning only to have us score eight runs in the seventh inning to break it open.” Bonners Ferry played the Homedale Trojans, who were ranked No. 2 in the state, in the championship game. “We had a 4-0 lead going into the final inning and won 4-2 for our very first State Championship in the 25-year history of Badger baseball. I don't think we ever thought we were going to lose a game, but there were tense moments throughout the weekend competing for the title. Being in this situation in the past, and particularly last year, I think helped us get through it. The boys competed incredibly,” said Coach Turpin. As coach, it is Turpin’s job to encourage his players. Going into the game, he told the players that these are opportunities of a lifetime and to enjoy the moment and experience. He said, “Leave everything on the field and, if you do, you can’t feel bad about the outcome regardless.” The captains for this year’s team were Brady Bateman and Chris Sabin, both of whom are four-year varsity starters. The pair was quick to thank

8

their coaches, family and friends for all of the support they have shown over the years and were ecstatic to end their high school career as State champions. Captain and shortstop, Sabin, exclaimed, "I was so happy! It was an amazing feeling to realize that all of our hard work over the years had paid off. I am grateful that I got to play with such a great group of guys."

NOW AT OUR NEW LOCATION! Experienced Dental Care for the Entire Family

The sentiment was echoed by captain and catcher Bateman. "I can't really put into words the feelings I had when we recorded our last out, and we were finally State champions. We came so close last year and to come back and win it this year was incredible. It was so emotional. We were so happy; it is something that I will never forget." And they weren’t the only two who were grateful for all the encouragement. Coach Turpin expressed his gratitude to the many who supported him and his team.

The overall community has embraced the boys throughout this journey which has been special for the boys. It has been an unbelievable year for Badger baseball and a great accomplishment for these players. They all deserve to be champions!” said Turpin. He extended a special thanks to his assistant coaches, Chad Carle, Chris Sabin and Cal Bateman for making his job easier and taking the ride with him. And there are those who work behind the scenes each year to provide support. “Pam Turpin, Lisa Carle, Lori Sabin and Melissa Bateman, we coaches could not have done this without their support and encouragement!” Congratulations to the Badger baseball team for an incredible season. Your community is extremely proud of you!

MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SUMMER ENTERTAINING BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER, SELKIRK GLASS AND CABINETS, A DIVISION OF PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER

don’t know about you, but as soon as I see green grass and blooms on the trees, I can’t get the lawnmower out fast enough and start planning out this year’s garden. I love being outdoors. Whether it’s yardwork or hanging out at the lake, the sun on my freckles is just what I need to kick the winter blues to the curb. Summer is when people tend to come over and stay a bit longer, and the good weather is just an excuse to be outside on the deck or patio. That being said, we need to make sure we have a couple of easy meals in the fridge or freezer for those pop-in guests, that our barbecue tank is full and that the deck or patio is in good shape for entertaining.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

What items are essential to a successful and ready outdoor space? Firepits are one of the things that create a gathering place; people know to find a seat and settle in for the evening, and it gives people something to look at when there’s a pause in the conversation. No one thinks it’s weird to gaze into the flickering flames of a fire, but if you had that same look on your face when you were just looking around at your friends, it may get a little awkward. The firepit can be on the patio in a raised unit or can be built in with pavers. Either way, it’s a must for summer entertainment. Seating is also a must. Providing enough seats on the patio or deck can be comprised of a loose interpretation of

chairs. Pavers, patio furniture, boxes, benches, ottomans, boulders, wood blocks and even coolers all work as acceptable seating options for patios. As long as it’s something that keeps you up off the ground, keeps you close to the fire and provides a comfortable place to rest, it works.

Proximity to beverages and snacks is also important. This can be a table with items laid out like a buffet or a simple trough with iced beverages. It’s a good idea to have it right there on the patio or deck for two reasons: One, it keeps people out of the house (why clean when you don’t have to?), and two, easy access makes it easy for everyone to contribute. When people come over, they can throw their own beverage of choice into the ice and it’s ready for them whenever they need it. Pest control and lighting are also important items that shouldn’t be overlooked. The firepit will provide some ambient lighting, but there should be lights hanging or a path illuminated so people can find their way easily. Pest control can either be done naturally with the strategic

placement of plants that repel insects or via use of candles that will repel or draw insects away from the gathering areas. However you make it work, the idea of moving the indoor entertainment to the outside will provide hours of good fun and countless memories.

Summer is when people tend to come over and stay a bit longer, and the good weather is just an excuse to be outside on the deck or patio.

e're getting close to the Fourth of July, our national Independence Day. This celebration may get you thinking of the many freedoms you enjoy. But have you thought of what you might need to do to attain financial freedom? Your first step is to define what financial independence signifies to you. For many people, it means being able to retire when they want to and to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle. So, if this is your vision as well, consider taking these steps: • Pay yourself first. If you wait until you have some extra money “lying around” before you invest for retirement, you may never get around to doing it. Instead, pay yourself first. This actually is not that hard to do, especially if you have a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, because your contributions are taken directly from your paycheck before you even have the chance to spend the money. You can set up a similar arrangement with an IRA by having automatic contributions taken directly from your checking or savings account.

www.edwardjones.com www.edwardjones.com

short-term costs, try to build an emergency fund containing six months' to a year's worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. • Give yourself some wiggle room. If you decide that to achieve financial independence you must retire at 62 or you must buy a vacation home by the beach, you may feel disappointed if you fall short of these goals. But if you're prepared to accept some flexibility in your plans—perhaps you can work until 65 or just rent a vacation home for the summer—you may be able to earn a different, but still acceptable, financial freedom. And by working a couple of extra years or paying less for your vacation home expenses, you may also improve your overall financial picture. Putting these and other moves to work can help you keep moving toward your important goals. When you eventually reach your own “Financial Independence Day,” it may not warrant a fireworks display—but it should certainly add some sparkle to your life.

• Invest appropriately. Your investment decisions should be guided by your time horizon, risk tolerance and retirement goals. If you deviate from these guideposts—for instance, by taking on either too much or too little risk—you may end up making decisions that aren't right for you and that may set you back as you pursue your financial independence.

• Avoid financial “potholes.” The road to financial liberty will always be marked with potholes you should avoid. One such pothole is debt—the higher your debt burden, the less you can invest for your retirement. It's not always easy to lower your debt load, but do the best you can to live within your means. A second pothole comes in the form of large, unexpected short-term costs, such as a major home or auto repair or a medical bill not fully covered by insurance. To avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for these

BAT FOR OUR

Brothers

Co-ed softball tourna ment to benefit the Rob Gust-CJ Erickson Skool Scholarship BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

A

fundraising co-ed softball tournament in remembrance of Rob Gust and CJ Erickson, who passed away in June 2016, Bat for Our Brothers is holding its second annual event on July 28 at Riverside Park Field. “Rob Gust and CJ Erickson, both exceptional Bonners Ferry High School student athletes, graduated in 2010 and went on to become successful lineman,” says Michaela Telford, tournament coordinator. “Family and friends wanted to create a tradition to honor them, their love of sports and to give back to the community in their name. To date, the scholarship has provided four Bonners Ferry graduates with $1,500 in scholarship awards.” The tournament will kick off at 8am and

continue until the champion is crowned. Last year’s event had six teams, and they are looking to have six to eight teams this year. “If more teams are interested, we would love them to participate,” says Michaela. They recommend no more than 14 players per team. Ten players can play in the field at a time, and the number of men and women must be even. As the tournament is fairly competitive, it’s best that those participating are high school age or older.

For those who would like to play ball, sign up through the Bat for Our Brothers Facebook page, email batforourbrothers@gmail.com or find the event link at BonnersFerryLivingLocal. com. The cost is $250 per team. Those who would like to donate can make out a check to Boundary County School District with the memo Rob Gust-CJ Erickson Skool Scholarship and mail to 718 Oak Street, Bonners Ferry, ID 83805.

“The purpose of the tournament is to gather in remembrance of Rob and CJ, raise money for the local high school scholarship and enjoy each other’s company while playing softball,” says Michaela. There will be some concessions for sale during the tournament, including event T-shirts.

All funds will go toward the Rob Gust-CJ Erickson Skool Scholarship which benefits two deserving Bonners Ferry High School seniors who will be pursuing higher education through the attendance of an accredited vocational program.

BOUNDARY COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT REPORTS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR BY PATTY HUTCHENS

ith the school year having just ended, Boundary County School District Superintendent, Gary Pflueger, reflects on the accomplishments of staff and students—and there are many. Pflueger said the administrative team in the district is one of the strongest he has ever worked with. “This group has experience, intelligence and educational savvy,” said Pflueger. The superintendent is also very proud of the work on the budget that has been accomplished this year. New business manager, Cal Bateman, and the school board have worked carefully to lay out the big picture. With the recent formation of an advisory financial understanding committee that is comprised of prominent community members, school administration and staff, Pflueger said there will be a transparency that will remove any doubt of district practices. There are also Student Leadership Programs which begin in the fifth grade and run through Boundary County Middle School and Bonners Ferry High School that help students interact with the community. “Through these programs, we work on school pride activities and community service projects,” said Pflueger. In addition to these programs, he said the athletics, including the cheer and dance squads, band and drama groups, have all worked hard to compete at a competitive level. To help better prepare students for college, the district has extended dual enrollment and online classes in which students can earn college credits. “We have added career and technical education courses, and the vocation classes include FFA and welding through VoAg, industrial arts, manufacturing, auto shop and computer tech. This summer and next year I will look for additional funding to increase these programs,” said Pflueger.

When asked about the topic on everyone’s mind these days, school safety, he said the school board, administration and all staff accept this as their No. 1 priority. “We have taken precautions to improve safety in all schools. School resource officer, Michael Martinez, is employed by Boundary County School District. We hold monthly drills in all schools. We recently had an unannounced drop-in assessment made by Mark Feddersen from the Idaho Office of School Safety and Security. I hold meetings with the chief of police and Boundary County Juvenile Services as needed. I have met with our new chief of police in Bonners Ferry, Brian Zimmerman. This summer we will set up a new system of support with each other,” Pflueger said. Pflueger said that in the upcoming school year, all schools will adhere to the same three-word motto to keep our schools “Safe, Civil and Productive.” “We all need to be involved. All individuals need to adopt the practice of ‘See and Say!’ If we take care of each other, we can avoid the senseless tragic incidences seen in other communities.”

BONNERS FERRY NATIVE,

Adam Hall, EXPERIENCES GREAT SUCCESS

BY PATTY HUTCHENS | PHOTOS COURTESY OF ADAM HALL

Adam Hall has never forgotten about those in his hometown who have helped him achieve the success he has experienced. Adam was born and raised in Bonners Ferry and wrestled for Bonners Ferry High School where he was a three-time high school state champion and was also the national champion and ranked No. 1 in the country in his weight class his senior year. “My high school coach, Conrad Garner, helped build the foundation for my wrestling. He helped me mature both as an athlete and a person,” said Adam. He also credits Coach Chris Owens, the assistant coach at Boise State University and the coach of the national team at the time, for helping him achieve the No. 1 ranking in the country. After he graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 2006, Adam attended Boise State University on an athletic scholarship. There he had a 122-18 career record which ranked second in Boise State all-time wrestling. Winning two Pac-10 titles, Adam qualified for the NCAA National Championships all four years and was a two-time NCAA AllAmerican. But his success did not stop there. He placed fifth at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Trials and was a four-time U.S. Open place winner. Upon graduating from Boise State University, Adam was offered a job at Columbia University in New York City. “The idea of being a part of a Division I staff challenged me in many facets,” said Adam, which included moving to such

a large city. Adam remained at Columbia for four years during which time he also received his master’s degree in sports management. “While at Columbia, I passed up four or five other offers [to coach],” said Adam, citing his desire to help build the program as his primary reason for staying there. But after four years at Columbia, Adam decided to move on when he was offered an assistant coach position at North Carolina State. “I handle a lot of administrative things and business in regard to the team, as well as academics and recruiting,” he said of his multiple roles he has assumed over the last three years. While he felt Columbia was a good fit, Adam said that North Carolina State, both the school and its athletic department, fit his mentality and philosophy much better; the community reminding him of Bonners Ferry.

“I really feel as though I’m coming into my own as far as being a coach,” he said of his career. As far as Adam’s personal life, that too could not be better. While living in New York, he met a woman, Christine, at church. A teacher, she is originally from San Francisco and moved with Adam to North Carolina when he took the job at North Carolina State. They were married a year ago and look forward to building their life there. Congratulations to Adam for being a shining example of what hard work and determination can help one achieve.

BONNERS FERRY IN FOCUS CELEBRATING COMMUNITY KOOTENAI RIVER DAYS PROVIDES FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY BY PATTY HUTCHENS

I

t’s a summer party that everyone looks forward to in our area—Kootenai River Days. Taking place this year from July 16 through July 21, it promises to be fun for the whole family! While there was a short period of time the event was not held, The Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce took over Kootenai River Days when it made its return in 2014, and each year since it has grown significantly as more and more events are added and an increasing number of people flock to the festivities. According to Jennifer Van Etten, chairperson for this year’s event, when Kootenai River Days returned four years ago, the main events were a street dance, rodeo, family movie night at the United Methodist Church and the Rotary Wine Walk. “The Rotary Wine Walk is now known as the

Grapes and Barley Walk,” she said. Tickets are $25 a piece if purchased before June 30. After June 30, they will be $30. “This is dependent on space and availability, so do not wait too long.” The event will begin on July 19 at 5:30pm, with the participation and starting point still to be determined. Tickets can be purchased from Glenda Poston at gposton@boundarycountyid. org or by contacting Kristie Campbell at kristie@profotofix.com. “The family movie night is now hosted at the Pearl Theatre in Downtown Bonners Ferry,” said Jennifer of the popular event that attracts many families and is sponsored by Baby Go Round and More. “We have also added free bouncy houses for the kids from Northwest Inflatables as well as free professional face painters Koda Tillberg and Missy Saunders.” Other events taking place include the Bull Bash, which is now all local participants, and

a Jack and Jill Softball Tournament that will be held at Riverside Ball Field. “Free camping will be available there for players,” said Jennifer. For the second year in a row there will be comedians entertaining the crowd at the Kootenai River Inn Casino. “We will have Michael Glatzmaier and Harry J. Riley out of Spokane,” said Jennifer. Also, Devotion Tribal Belly Dancers will be performing for the fourth year. New to this year’s Kootenai River Days is something that is sure to bring out the chefs in the community—the Wild Game/Rib Cook-Off on Saturday. Held on Main Street downtown, this is a great way to show off your culinary skills. If you would like to enter the contest, you can email the chamber at bonnersferrychamber@gmail.com. “We hope to have the softball tournament and

Currently there are 20 volunteers, but they can always use more and are always looking for more ways to improve upon what they already have, add additional events and have people willing to lead those events. “Our biggest need this year is cleanup after the event,” she said. Another fun part of Kootenai River Days and

one that brings out the creativity in business owners is the window display contest. “The theme will be your best version of Kootenai River Days. The judges will be by votes from the community. Each participating business will have a ballot box or jar you can drop your vote into,” said Jennifer, who adds that they hope to have businesses from throughout the county participate as it is not just limited to the downtown area. First place will be a free year enhanced version on the Chamber of Commerce website, second place is a pizza and pop lunch for the winning business’s staff and third place will be coffee and doughnuts for the business’s staff. The funds raised from Kootenai River Days go to putting on the event itself, including insurance, advertising, rental of the fairgrounds, hiring a band and much more. “If there ever happens to be extra money, that goes into the pot for next year’s event,” said Jennifer.

ust last month, Bonners Ferry was introduced to North Idaho Collision Repair Center, located at 148 David Thompson Drive. Here, owners Shane Florea and Mindi Durland offer a full-service collision repair and detail center.

Repair Center, they will also repair and replace and can take care of AC needs with their machine that works on R34 and R1234YF refrigerant, which new cars come equipped with. They accept all insurance estimates or can write them for you right there at the shop. Once a claim is filed, it is their goal to make the repair process as easy and painless as possible for their customers.

Shane, owner and body technician, and office manager and estimator, Kenny Baker, have more than six decades of auto-body experience between them. Combined with a talented painter, Shaun Eggleston, who has an eye for detail, and Mindi, co-owner and front desk, they are ready to offer the best in both customer and auto services.

“We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service. We will treat each customer with care and respect, understanding that a collision is often physically and emotionally traumatic,” says Mindi. “Our goal is to lighten the burden of that with our thoughtful service and timely and expert collision repair.”

“From the time we acquire a vehicle and throughout the repairs, we provide terrific customer service and update the customer during the entire process,” says Mindi.

The team at NICRC enjoys the satisfaction of taking a vehicle that has been in an accident and restoring it back to its former beauty. As they know cars are one of the most costly investments one can make—and that investment depreciates greatly in value once wrecked—they believe that with the talent in their shop, they are able to restore that value through the comprehensive repairs they do.

The shop features a state-of-the art paint center with a Blowtherm booth that can cure PPG paint in 20 minutes. In addition, they use the most modern technology and tools including a Pro Spot welder to put factory welds back into cars, a CCC estimating system, Velocity Laser Measuring, a 22-foot frame rack that can handle the small economy cars to the largest long-bed extended cab pickup! Opening a business in Bonners Ferry is a dream come true for the entire team. Shane grew up in Bonners Ferry, moving to Denver in 1982 to do auto-body work on some of the high-end cars like Audi, Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover and Lexus. He recently moved back to the area to continue his love for auto-body repair right here in his hometown. Kenny has called Bonners Ferry home his entire life! Mindi moved here in 2002 because she fell in love with the area and the community and considers Bonners Ferry home. Shaun moved to North Idaho four years ago to be with his fiancée, Kirsten, and currently resides nearby in Sandpoint. In addition to being part of the business community, both Shane and Shaun are actively involved in helping addicts and alcoholics achieve and maintain sobriety. Shaun also mentors inmates at Bonner County Jail through the AA program. Kenny is one of our local volunteer firefighters and is our Rotary president. Those looking for a reliable, trustworthy and experienced auto-body shop right here in Bonners Ferry, look no further than North Idaho Collision Repair Center.

All You Need Is Love Three families who heeded the call to adopt BY JANI GONZALEZ PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE DALE FAMILY AND THE BROWNING FAMILY. PHOTOS OF THE WALLACE FAMILY BY ASHLY MONTORO PHOTOGRAPHY.

T

he plight of medically needy orphans around the globe is a crisis few are aware of. In particular, Ukraine upholds antiquated and overburdened systems where developmentally delayed children are institutionalized in state orphanages where they are often neglected and abused. In 2017, UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) reported that 2.7 million children are in residential care (group homes or institutions). Of those, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia had the highest populations of children in this type of care. They estimate that there are 140 million orphaned children globally, some of whom have living parents. It's a crisis that goes unnoticed and is challenging as international adoption laws have created a maze of agencies and applications for families to overcome. But through concerned individuals and certain nonprofits, some of these children are finding homes. Reece's Rainbow is one of those nonprofits. The national organization began in 2006 as a way to promote awareness of orphaned children with Down syndrome and has expanded to include all children with medical needs. They provide information about the adoption process both domestically and internationally. They also provide grants to families adopting and host a fund for donations. The three families featured here decided to adopt children from Ukraine after feeling a bond with a child seen on a social post. All three also came across Reece's Rainbow in their research. The Dales: Room to Love More Laura Dale of Rathdrum, Idaho, has been fundraising to adopt two medically fragile children from Ukraine. She's been fundraising since February 2017 by selling anything from hand-sewn children's clothing to hand-dipped chocolate caramels. But the Dales' story starts more than a decade before when she and her husband, Jonathan, decided to fost-adopt. Their second child, Kya, was born with chronic health issues. She was nonverbal and required constant care. The Dales, who had one other child at the time, wanted to expand their family but struggled with infertility. “Kya’s health issues became normal,” said Laura. “There were acute

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

illnesses where we went on autopilot, but we got so used to it that we thought about caring for a child like her.” They first became foster parents and adopted their eldest son, Nathanial, and their youngest son, Aiden, who was born with hydrocephalus from which he is mentally and physically impaired. He was 2 ½ months old when they began fostering him; he weighed 7 pounds. When the option to adopt arose, “it was an instantaneous feeling to say ‘yes,’” said Laura. Later that year in 2011, their daughter passed away from her health condition. They focused on caring for Aiden and raising their two other sons, now adults. With only Aiden, now 7 years old, to care for, Laura again thought about helping children like him. After seeing a video of a medically needy child in Eastern Europe, Laura thought she would advocate. “I wanted to show these kids aren’t scary— they just want someone to love them,” she said. Her research led her to Reece’s Rainbow where she began advocating by posting on behalf of “Clarence,” a 4-year-old boy institutionalized in what’s called a “baby house.” Often, children may be moved to an adult institution as young as age 5, in which case their life expectancy drops to about a year. The Dales watched Clarence's video repeatedly and decided to adopt. “People ask, ‘Why aren’t you adopting domestically?’” Laura said. “In Eastern Europe, kids with special needs are pushed into institutions. Even physicians don’t know how to treat these kids with conditions like malnutrition.” In the midst of their fundraising, her husband fell in love with “Aria” from a video Laura saw on social media. “[Aria] was throwing things around her crib like our daughter had; I sent

“GOD CALLED US TO THIS. WE HAD TO RELY ON A STRENGTH THAT WAS BIGGER THAN US,” SHE SAID. [the video] to him, and he said, 'When do we get her?'” The cost of one adoption is at minimum $28,000. Adopting Aria will cost $13,000, but the Dales are nearing their goal and hope to visit Ukraine to finalize the adoption this summer. Even once finalized, they are required to return two more times before bringing their children home. The Brownings: Growing a Big Family Charrissa Browning and her husband Phillip, of Port Orchard, Washington, already had a big family when their sixth child, Justus, was born with Down syndrome in 2009. As an infant, he underwent open-heart surgery. Once he had recovered, Charrissa started researching Down syndrome and came across Reece's Rainbow and was immediately drawn to the children listed on the site. “Down syndrome is such a personal thing for us. I read profile after profile and couldn't believe the difference between my child and the photos online,” she said. In June of 2010, the Brownings decided to adopt two children from Ukraine—a boy Maxim and a girl Ivana. Both were around 5 years of age at the time and in the same institution. To raise their adoption fees, Charrissa sold things, fundraised on her blog and hosted a silent auction. They were able to adopt Max just before he turned 6, before he was moved to an adult facility. “Once there, children have an

80-percent chance of dying because of neglect and also abuse from other patients,” Charrissa explained. Their daughter, Ivana, has Down syndrome, and like their son, Justus, had needed heart surgery after birth—except she had never received the proper care. Ivana was born with a hole in her heart and had been relinquished by her parents. It's a miracle she survived the years she did, according to Charrissa. “When we met her, her head was shaved, she weighed 20 pounds and wore clothing sized for 18- to 24-month-olds. She was in a laying room where all they did was sleep or lay in a communal crib—like a playpen,” she said. In December 2010, they brought home Max and Ivana, now 13 and 12, and they immediately began to thrive. That first year with three new children with special needs was a difficult one, but they relied on their faith to help them through. “God called us to this. We had to rely on a strength that was bigger than us,” said Charrissa. The Wallaces: Fulfilling the Desire to Give a Child a Home Andrea and Matt Wallace always knew they wanted to adopt. Although they already had a large family—eight children with seven at home between the ages of 3 and 17—they had been foster parents in Washington. When they moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, however, the state's foster system did not allow them to continue fostering because of their family size.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

28

After the rejection, a friend of Andrea's referred her to Reece's Rainbow. “It's such an eye opener to see the neglect and abuse that goes on,” Andrea said. One day, in her social news feed, a video posted from Maya's Hope, another online nonprofit that advocates for orphaned children, showing a 15-year-old boy, Dima, with cerebral palsy. “I saw the video and felt that was the child we needed to help,” Andrea said. She has raised money by selling her crochet work at the farmers market and online plus raffling a friend's quilt. In addition, they have taken a personal loan to cover the costs and have a family sponsorship on Reece's Rainbow where donors can contribute. The Wallaces know that their future son has some developmental delays and a language barrier but are prepared to welcome and care for him. “We have some special needs in our family and have been researching special services, too,” said Andrea. “We're also learning about his culture, religion and learning the language, too. How to Help Not everyone can change a child's life through adoption, but they can still make a difference by supporting organizations and families who adopt. Donations don't have to be financial. Friends can donate time or offer clothes and supplies as they would with a new baby. Or, sponsor a child on social media by posting their story.

FACIAL OILS

The original skincare BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA, PLLC, SANDPOINT

W

hen it comes to choosing skincare products, it can be difficult to know which ones are right for you. There are thousands of products ranging from cleansers to eye serums, and knowing which products will work for you, your skin type and the issues you are trying to correct (acne, fine lines, large pores, etc.) can seem like a daunting task. Let’s get back to basics and discuss some of the first products that were used to cleanse and correct our skin woes. What are facial oils? Facial oils (often called beauty oils or serums) are a blend of beneficial plant oils that work to moisturize and deeply nourish the skin. Derived from plants rather than animal or petroleum products, their starring role in the beauty routine comes after cleanser and before creams/lotions. They work best to rejuvenate your complexion by supplying nutrients to the skin in a form that penetrates deeply into the layers of your skin, giving you the most benefit. Unlike conventional moisturizers that combine water and wax, facial oil blends are typically 100-percent active ingredients and contain no fillers. Natural plant oils have been used as moisturizers and skin conditioners for thousands of years. The complex biology of plant compounds delivers vitamins, antioxidants and omega fatty acids, resulting in endless skin benefits. Scientists have tried extensively to replicate the beneficial plant compounds in labs but have not been able to reproduce them in their entirety. So, while many skincare products deliver amazing results, if you desire an all-natural skincare approach, consider the use of oils. Won’t facial oils cause breakouts and excessive oil? When you first hear about adding oil to your beauty routine, it is natural to be

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

concerned about breakouts and excessive oiliness. The truth is that adding oils to your beauty routine helps to normalize your oil production. When we use products that strip our natural oils from our skin, our body produces more oil to prevent over drying. But when you use the right type and amount of oil, excess oil production can calm down. And, most natural plant oils are noncomedogenic, meaning they will not clog your pores. Which facial oils are best for my skin type? Now that you know the many benefits of adding facial oils to your skincare routine, let’s talk about which oils are best for your skin type or concern. • Dry/Mature Skin - Jojoba seed and rosehip oils will help to fade discolorations and encourage cell regeneration while moisturizing. These oils are lightly scented, provide rich hydration and are absorbed quickly. • Combination Skin - Bergamot and marula oil help prevent skin damage and fight breakouts, while jasmine and lapis oils are great to boost emollient moisture and calm oil production in prone areas. • Sensitive Skin - Chia, shea and lavender oils have a calming effect and nourish sensitive, dry and irritable skin. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids as well as powerful antioxidants and plant-based probiotics to nourish even the most sensitive skin. Mother Earth provides so many beautiful resources that have benefits beyond what can be created in a lab. They can be beneficial on their own or in conjunction with other skincare products. Take advantage of these natural resources and take your skincare routine back to the basics.

In Loving Memory Two mothers honor their sons by serving others By Patty Hutchens

F

reedom. It is something that many take for granted. We go on with our day-to-day lives, often not giving much thought to those who are fighting for our country at home and overseas. Unless you are over 50 years old, you don’t recall much of the Vietnam War and those that came before, when young men anxiously waited to see if their draft number came up. Yes, it was different then. But the reality is that even though young men and women are not drafted, there are countless individuals who voluntarily put their lives on the line every day. And of those, many never make it home. And for those who do make it home, they may never be the same. For those who have lost a loved one to the horror of war, the hurt never goes away. But losing one to war does not necessarily always mean death. It may mean that person comes back emotionally scarred, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other mental health issues that can bring about lifelong challenges which could potentially result in suicide. For those who have lost a loved one to either death by the hands of the enemy at war or by suicide from PTSD, they do what they can to carry on in life. Here are a couple stories of people who have chosen to take their anguish and turn it into something positive to honor their loved one’s memory. Gig Harbor, Washington, resident Leslie Mayne lost her son Kyle Farr to suicide in March 2009. Kyle served in the U.S. Army and, after being honorably discharged, he was treated for PTSD both overseas and in the U.S. After being released from treatment, Kyle committed suicide. With unspeakable pain and grief, Leslie launched Permission to Start Dreaming—a new take on another PTSD. The foundation, formed in 2011, partners with veterans’ programs both locally and nationally and holds annual events such as

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

33

Race for a Soldier, which originated in 2011, Swing for a Soldier golf tournament and Pull for a Soldier trap shooting event. The hope is to not only raise funds to help with the needs of veterans suffering from PTSD but to also raise awareness among the public about an evergrowing epidemic. Since launching the foundation, nearly $300,000 has been raised. “We have supported many veteran organizations since 2011,” said Leslie. “We have funded, and will continue to do so, strength-based alternative and holistic retreat programs that last far beyond the actual experience.” In addition, they host a monthly Veteran Huddle meeting and are providing their first Veteran Workshop in October that will focus on promoting and fostering post-traumatic growth. “At the end of November, we are sending six combat veterans to participate in the Warrior PATHH program in hopes to deliver a similar program in the Pacific Northwest next year,” said Leslie, referring to a progressive and alternative training for healing heroes, the nation's first non-clinical program designed to cultivate and facilitate Posttraumatic Growth amongst those struggling with PTSD and/or combat stress. (See BoulderCrestRetreat.org/warriorpathh for more information.) According to Leslie, the biggest need for our men and women who return from overseas is ensuring they have the connection to the right relationships, right resources and the right responses for the trauma they have experienced. There are also many ways we as a community, family member or friend can help those experiencing PTSD and depression. “Reach out to organizations like ours and ask for support and help. We will get them connected to the right resource. Get involved with our events. Begin the right relationships with organizations like ours that contribute to ‘mental fitness’ and programs that promote doing the internal work to be the best versions of themselves after their military service. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. We need our military members to continue to serve their country at home, in their churches, communities, businesses and families,” said Leslie.

Theresa Hart is a mother who also took her grief and channeled it into making an impact on veterans. Theresa formed Newby-ginnings of North Idaho in October 2013 in honor and memory of her son, SPC Nicholas Newby, who was killed in action in Baghdad on July 7, 2011. The mission, which includes serving the families of the fallen, those who have served and those who are continuing to serve, has provided Theresa with an opportunity to channel her loss into something that gives her pride and purpose.

Newby-ginnings is located in Post Falls, Idaho, and is a place where veterans, active servicemen and women and Gold Star families can come for not only basic household necessities but for peer support, resources and referrals to appropriate agencies. Run entirely by volunteers, their shop has served more than 2,500 individual and enrolls at least 10 new veterans each week. It helps keep the memory of Nicholas alive while also serving others. As for Leslie, it is the memory of her son that keeps her moving forward to make a difference. “Kyle would have thrived in the veteran community that our foundation has created. He loved the outdoors, sports and connecting with his friends. He loved to laugh, and he wanted to make us proud. He loved his country. He despised bullies. He needed to get real help with his addiction and learn how to make peace with his time in the military. He cared deeply about his friends, loved his family and wanted to serve his country. Drugs are not the answer to helping people with trauma. It is not what is wrong with you; it is what happened to you. As a country, we make a promise to our war fighters that we will have their backs when they return. The institutions have failed them. We cannot. Kyle would probably think his mom was on the right track of encouraging our civilian community to step up their game in these matters. I miss him so. His two sisters and brother carry on, but we ache still inside.”

T

hey could be our husband or wife, father or mother, sister, brother, son, daughter, best friend. We all know someone who is currently fighting for our country or who served in the military at some point in their life. As important as it is to support them emotionally, physically and spiritually while they are in active duty, it is equally important, if not more so, to be there when they finally come home and return to civilian life. Upon returning home, there are many men and women who find themselves unable to pick up where they left off, struggling to connect with their families, friends and communities as they once had. Their world becomes a lonely place, and it can be extremely difficult for them to ask for help. It is our duty, as it was their duty to serve our country, to reach out with compassion and an open heart to do all in our power to truly bring these soldiers home—and keep them safe. Since September 11, 2001, more than 2.8 million service members have deployed to war zones across the globe—many on multiple tours. From soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen, these battlefields have transformed them. There are many programs that have been established to guide our veterans on their journey to recovery from a world many of us will never experience; yet so many never take advantage of these programs either out of fear, sadness or shame. With Memorial Day behind us, Independence Day upon us and Veterans Day fast approaching, what better way to honor all who have served by doing our part in their healing process and show them all of the opportunities out there that were created for these heroes. Boulder Crest Retreats was established for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Their program, PATHH, Progressive and Alternative Training for Healing Heroes, based on the science of Post Traumatic Growth (PTG), offers various programs to aid in the healing process—at no charge. Warrior PATHH offers veterans a free 18-month program that begins with a seven-day intensive immersive in-residence initiation with separate programs for males and females; Family PTHH five-day program focused on the entire family; Couples PATHH and Caregiver PATHH three-day programs.

There are two sites for Boulder Crest Retreat (BCR): Virginia, opened in 2013, and Arizona, opened just last year. Located within minutes of the historic Appalachian Trail and the Shenandoah River, BCR Virginia offers 37 acres where you’ll find cabins, a lodge, archery range, horses, labyrinth, walking trails, fishing pond, outdoor exercise area and more. In addition, the property has chickens and a Heroes Garden— the nation’s second handicapped-accessible walled garden. Located within minutes of the historic Arizona National Scenic Trail, BCR Arizona boasts 130 acres with five-star lodging for up to 28 people, a lodge, archery range, horses, donkeys and longhorn steer, walking and hiking trails, fishing pond, chickens and walled garden. Both retreats are open to combat veterans (defined as anyone who deployed to a war zone) from any generation and conflict and first responders, and is proud to welcome activeduty, reserve and National Guard personnel, veterans and family members, to include Gold Star families. You will find a wide range of therapeutic and recreational activities designed to offer their guests “peace of mind and an enhanced sense of well-being,” according to their website. From archery and equine therapy, labyrinth, tipi and horticulture to culinary therapy, fishing, kayaking, music, art, journaling and more, “each activity has a unique and longstanding connection to warrior culture and a strong track record of success.” There is hope of bringing a similar program to the Pacific Northwest as early as next year. Those interested in Boulder Crest Retreat can find out more by visiting BoulderCrestRetreat.org.

Team Red, White and Blue has a mission across the country to “enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity,” according to their website, TeamRWB.org. With chapters throughout the country, chapters can be found in the Pacific and Inland Northwest in Spokane, Tacoma and Seattle, Washington.

The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it.

One of the fastest growing veterans’ organizations in the world, Team RWB holds thousands of events each year to help veterans get out and engage with their community. Each chapter works hard to deliver consistent, local and inclusive opportunities for veterans, hosting exercise events, local races and athletic events, social events, community service events, and eagle engagements (one-on-one or small group gatherings which allow veteran/community members to experience physical, social and community activities; a great way to build sincere relationships with others in the community in which they live). Utilizing extreme sports as a way to “take the edge” out of civilian life, XSports4Vets is a program made up of current conflict veterans who are there to help fellow combat veterans succeed back at home and in their community. From riverboarding and rock climbing to sky diving and rafting, they utilize these extreme sports to connect with others while working on healing their wounds in a positive way. Based in Western Montana, you can find out more about XSports4Vets and their upcoming extreme events by visiting XSports4Vets.org. For animal lovers, nothing beats a man’s best friend, and Veterans Moving Forward is there to provide service dogs to veterans struggling with physical or behavioral health issues. Through their canine team and raisers, this nonprofit organization raises and trains these service dogs for veterans at no cost to those receiving them. According to VMF’s website, “Service dogs can give veterans the courage and ability to leave their homes, to try new things and to re-engage in their home communities— making a life-changing difference.” You can find out more about this incredible organization and ways you can help through VetsFwd.org.

-Robert H. Schuller

There are resources out there, and more are popping up each year as the need continues to help our struggling veterans who have sacrificed for all of us. These men and women are seeking ways to heal from their wounds, especially those wounds that can’t be seen.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

Tri-Cities

THE HEART OF WASHINGTON WINE COUNTRY STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

W

hat were once the three small Eastern Washington towns of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland has now transformed into the bustling metropolitan area known as the Tri-Cities. “Fun in the Sun” is the motto due to almost 300 sunny days each year, making the area popular year round for outdoor activities. The confluence of the Yakima, Snake and Columbia rivers creates a water paradise for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, power boating, water skiing, fishing and much more. Golf is one of the top sports in the region, and it’s easy to see why with 10 challenging courses which can be played almost every day of the year. It is no wonder that the Tri-Cities are becoming a top vacation destination in Washington state. A great vacation starts with a great place to stay. The Columbia Point area is a nice central location with a marina, walking trails, restaurants and lodging. You can even catch a dinner cruise. The Courtyard Marriott is business oriented during the week and more family friendly on the weekends. An indoor heated pool and on-site bicycle rentals make this a perfect family destination. The wine-themed Lodge at Columbia Point is a more upscale experience and conducive to a couple’s getaway. Step up to a Grand Cru Riverfront King Premium and enjoy a custom, architect-designed room with an incredible view of the Columbia River. A walk-in shower, soaking tub and gas fireplace add to the luxury. Both hotels have riverfront views and are on the Richland Riverfront Trail. It is easy walking distance to restaurants, and the upscale Columbia Point Golf Club is close by. After checking into your hotel, stroll down the trail along the cove to LU LU Craft Bar + Kitchen. The restaurant is family owned, farm to table, with a made-from-scratch kitchen. The owner’s family has owned the Easterday Farms since 1958. Most of the food in the restaurant is sourced from their farm to include the beef and pork as well as potatoes and onions. Fresh

produce is also sourced from local farmers. LU LU provides homemade simple food. They have 12 beers on tap, more than 80 local wines and are famed for their craft cocktails. After dinner take a stroll on the Richland Riverfront Trail and watch the red, yellow and pink hues of the sunset. It is truly breathtaking. Turn in early as your next day begins promptly in the morning. Today you will tour the B Reactor National Historic Landmark, which was part of the Hanford Unit of the Manhattan Project. The tours are free of charge but you must register online to reserve your space. B Reactor tours begin at 9am on Saturdays and depart from the Interim Visitor Center. Plan for four hours which includes a short video and introduction at the visitor center, travel to and from the B Reactor and time at the site. The reactor was the world’s first full-scale plutonium production reactor. It produced the plutonium used in the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. The ride to the Hanford Site is quiet and remote. There is an eerie feeling when you step off the bus and enter the reactor. Once inside, after a briefing, you have the run of the place. There are many interesting artifacts, and the reactor itself with the rows and rows of fuel cells is a dramatic structure. It is a very interesting experience.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

43

After the bus drops you off at the visitor center, head over to the Atomic Ale Brewpub & Eatery for lunch. It was founded by owner Aaron Burks in 1997 with an atomic theme that highlights the history of the Hanford Site and honors the workers who flooded to the area in 1944 to work at the plant. The first wood-fired oven in the Tri-Cities still kicks out delicious pizzas with the distinctive crispy crust of a wood-fired pizza. The menu is a good complement to the hand-crafted ales Atomic Ale is known for. Make sure to check out the glowing “atomic rod” and the radioactive warning sign. It’s a fun photo op. After lunch, plan to take an intro to stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) class with Northwest Paddleboarding. This fun class will teach you the basics you need to enjoy this trending sport. It is surprisingly easy to learn, and the boards provide a much steadier base than you would expect—so sturdy in fact that the company offers yoga classes on the boards. If you have younger children and at least three people, you can reserve a private Intro to SUP class. Children must be at least 6 years of age to take the class. It is held at Two Rivers Park in a lagoon off the Columbia River. For dinner, head over to Tulip Lane to Tagaris Winery and Taverna

Tagaris. This is a more upscale dinner experience, but the lovely outdoor seating area with a large fountain is also very kid friendly. They can get up from the table and there is plenty of room to explore the large patio and artwork. The menu has a large variety, and you can make a meal out of a selection of Tapas. In addition to wine there are some great craft cocktails. In the morning, head over to the Uptown Shopping Center, which was created by the Atomic Energy Commission and opened in 1949. The shops will be closed but the center has a vintage feel with lots of artwork and is worth a drive by. You are here to visit The Spudnut Shop. It is Richland’s oldest coffee shop and home of the world-famous Spudnut, which is a doughnut made out of potato flour. There is a reason these Spudnuts are so famous. They are light, puffy and slightly sweet and oh so good. This is where the locals hang out. The shop has been featured on the Food Network’s “Unwrapped” and the Travel Channel special “Donut Paradise.”

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

For your last activity before heading home, visit the REACH Museum. This bright, airy museum’s focus is the natural and cultural history of the reach of the Columbia River and greater Columbia Basin. The exhibit on the Manhattan Project adds additional information and exhibits not seen at the Manhattan Project National Park. The section on the Ice Age Floods is very interesting and shows the great effects these floods had on the area. Make sure to step outside to see the vintage trailer and enjoy the views of the Columbia River. It is easy to see why the Tri-Cities are a top vacation destination in Washington state. After one visit you are sure to return. The friendly locals are welcoming, and there is too much to see and do in just one weekend. For more information on the area, go online to VisitTri-Cities. com. The official Tri-Cities website has everything you need to know to plan a fun getaway. CALENDAR OF EVENTS JUL

All-American Celebration

By Patty Hutchens

Celebrating the Fourth of July! It’s a birthday party like no other. The Fourth of July is a time for the country to unite and celebrate our freedom and independence. And what better place to do that than in our own town of Bonners Ferry. Complete with a parade, picnic, fun, entertainment and fireworks, it promises to be a great time. This is the seventh year that Gary Leonard has been organizing this event, and he said it is entirely sponsored by local businesses and community members. “This is not a commercial event; it is all about Bonners Ferry and Boundary County, and as long as I am involved, it will stay that way,” he said. The celebration officially kicks off at 5pm with the July Fourth Parade in which everyone is invited to attend and participate in. Following that, the local fire departments will hold several demonstrations and some healthy competitions. “Some folks might get a little damp,” warns Gary. The festivities will then move to the Boundary County Fairgrounds for food, fun and fireworks. Come hungry as the snack shack will be open and offering food for a great price. “We plan on having several other vendors there as well,” said Gary. The Family Fun Night at the fairgrounds is hosted by the local Lions Club. There are three-legged races, a potato sack race, water balloon toss and more. Opening ceremonies, complete with a presentation of the flag, pledge of allegiance, invocation and singing of the National Anthem, will begin at 7:45pm. Then, stay tuned for the entertainment by Rebecca and Thad Huseby followed by guest speakers and the drawing of the winning raffle tickets. Up for grabs are two $1,000 gift certificates from Far North Outfitters. Tickets are $10 each and only 300 tickets are sold. Just prior to the lighting of the fireworks will be the singing of “God Bless America” by firefighter and county chaplain Pastor Len Pine of the Providence Bible Presbyterian Church. And then … the big finale will light up the sky! “Personally, I love our community and enjoy every minute of this event,” said Gary. “We are starting to have visitors that come here just to see the families enjoy each other, play and relax at our old-fashioned, allAmerican July Fourth event.”
