Medicine Man Pharmacy Offering Medication Compounding & Free Hormone Consultations By Patty Hutchens
L
ast summer Medicine Man Pharmacy opened its doors inside Super 1 Foods and with it they brought an expertise and service not available at most area pharmacies. In addition to the free delivery and mailing of medications, owners Shane and Aimee Stuermer and Donald Smith provide a discount generic list of medications, medication packaging on a monthly or weekly basis, and brown bag consultations – a service that helps promote education of the patient on the medication they are taking and looks for possible interactions thereby improving the overall safety of the medication. But perhaps the most unique service they offer is that of a full service compounding lab. Medication compounding is the unique design of a medication for a particular person or need. This is performed by the pharmacist in a lab. “It’s very specific to each person,” explains Pharmacist Shane Stuermer about being able to precisely tailor a medication to an individual’s needs. The end goal is to provide a more therapeutic outcome for each patient. In addition to providing the customer with the precise dosage he or she needs, there are many other reasons pharmacists utilize medication compounding. It can be as simple as adding flavor, changing the color, or removing all preservatives and fillers. Other reasons can include making products that do not exist on the market, making gluten or lactose free products, making alcohol free, dye free, or sugar free medications, combining several medications into one, or converting from one dosage form to another in order to make medication easier to administer. Compounding expands the practitioner’s array and does not limit them to any certain strength, form or flavor. This
allows those at Medicine Man to custom-fit your medications. Compounding also allows the ability to administer medicine in a variety of forms including capsules, liquids, sublingual liquid, topical creams, ointments, gels, powders, and sprays as well as mouthwashes and rinses. The most widely used area in the world of medication compounding is in the area of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. This involves administering from a natural source the same hormones that are inside of the human body. It is individualized and customized to each person’s body. Shane Stuermer explains that the end result is avoiding unwanted side effects and providing clinical benefits and patient compliance with therapy. “We work with your physician to provide treatment for all of your symptoms,” said Shane. There are a number of way in which the pharmacist can prepare the compounded hormone medication including a topical cream, capsule or sublingual liquid. “We also offer hormone consultation without an appointment and saliva testing kits to measure your hormone levels,” said Shane who adds that the feedback they have received from their customers has been very positive. The pharmacists work closely with the medical doctors on adjusting the compounded medication on a regular basis so that the perfect combination of medication can be administered to maximize the customer’s needs and benefits. Ask your compounding pharmacist at Medicine Man Bonners Ferry to learn more about how medication compounding may enhance your life or someone around you.

“
We cannot discover new oceans unless we have the courage to lose sight of the shore,” is the motto of the Bonners Ferry High School Class of 2013, and June 1st, under hazy skies, this year’s graduates pushed away from shore, their eyes bright and fixed on a variety of new oceans. Some are off to college, a few to the military, still others to trade school or straight to work. Some reach for distant shores, others have chosen to stay close to home. okay,” said Zack, who responded to his coach the same way each time. “Mentally or physically?” This young man’s core values that include loving God, his family and his dog, have certainly served him well in his life journey thus far, and are sure to do so as he continues pursuing his goals and passions.
Zack has been honored throughout the years for his dedication and leadership qualities in the many sports he has engaged in during his high school years. In lacrosse he has received three most valuable player awards as well as the 2013 all-star team award. In wresting he received the Mr. Pin Award; and his recognition in football includes a leadership award, a most outstanding player award and a 110% award. With all these accomplishments in several sports, it is no surprise that Zack also received the overall athlete of the year award.
Favorite food: “I love Mexican food the most, but really every kind of food.” Favorite teacher: “My favorite teacher is Mrs. McLeish because she has done so much for me. She has done more than any other person has and I can’t ever repay her. I love her because she is not only a good teacher, but my mom.”
Having just completed his senior year at Bonners Ferry, Zack plans include going on a mission for his church and then onto college where he would like to study graphic design. “I love art – including drawing, painting and sketching,” said Zack. “I love what I do and would love to get paid for it.”

Zack said he enjoys all sports and also loves spending time with his friends. “I just love having a good time,” he said.

and Prevention (CDC), there were more than 1,000 reported cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in the United States in 2010 (the latest year for which data are available). To minimize your family’s risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, there are certain precautions that should be taken. NPMA recommends the following steps:

* Wear insect repellant when outdoors. Products containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus have proven to be safe and effective. (Parents should consult with their pediatrician for repellent recommendations.)

* If you will be outdoors for long periods in a place where heavy mosquito activity is predicted, consider wearing clothing treated with permethrin.

hey want to suck your blood! We are not talking about the characters from those popular vampire movies, but rather summer’s pesky mosquitoes. It’s not only time for backyard barbecues and afternoons by the lake or pool, but it is also the season that brings us 200 species of biting, buzzing, bothersome mosquitoes. Dr. Jorge Parada, spokesperson for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), cautions that mosquitoes are not just a nuisance pest. “Mosquitoes in every region of the country transmit diseasecausing pathogens that can trigger a range of symptoms and illnesses. In the United States, West Nile virus and allergic reactions are some of the more frequent concerns.” According to the Centers for Disease Control

* Eliminate sources of standing water around your home, including flower pots, clogged gutters and grill covers. Take proactive measures by drilling holes in the bottom of recycling bins, and replacing water in birdbaths weekly. * Inspect window/door screens for holes, and repair any tears to minimize chances for entry into the home. * If bitten, clean the area thoroughly with soap and water. Avoid scratching the bite area and apply anti-itch cream if necessary. Some homeowners feel a sense of security by using citronella candles, but it’s worth noting that while they may minimize the mosquito population in a targeted area, they will not eliminate the insects nor prevent them from biting. Itinerary aside, extended travel in a plane, car, train or bus can increase the risk of developing blood clots. “Standing and stretching the legs every two to four hours is advised for travelers at risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT),” said Dr. David Stone, a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Vascular surgeons encourage exercise during travel to maintain healthy veins and arteries. With extended travel, a blood clot can potentially form in the veins of the leg. If the clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, it causes a pulmonary embolism.
Almost anyone can be affected. In 2003, 39-year-old NBC News reporter David Bloom died of a blood clot after weeks of traveling around Baghdad in a cramped military tank.
Each year, 300,000 to 600,000 Americans die of a blood clot in the lungs, according to 2011 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics. Risk factors for the

Vascular surgeons suggest a regular exercise routine, a healthy body weight and not smoking as preventive measures against DVT. Ultrasound tests can detect DVT. Since half of DVT patients never experience warning signs, early detection is important. Anticoagulant medication can help treat DVT. Carefully pour mixture into a blender or food processor, and blend until it becomes a thick puree. Preheat oven to 200 degrees, and pour half the mixture onto a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Spread it thinly with the back of a spoon. You might need to add more to cover entire baking sheet. Pour remaining mixture onto a second sheet. Bake in lower parts of your oven for 2.53 hours. After 2.5 hours, check every 15 minutes. You are looking for the fruit to peel away easily from the parchment, and has become dehydrated. When done, remove from oven and cool. Using scissors, cut into 1-inch strips across your pan. Roll them up and store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
