PUBLISHER Get Involved in Our Future We Set the Standard!

THIS PAST MONTH, I watched proudly as my oldest child graduated from college. As a father, I could not have been more proud. My only daughter and the oldest of our three children, she has always been a dedicated student, and in high school a dedicated athlete. She has worked hard for all she has accomplished, and I am confident she will succeed in anything she puts her mind to. But it was not that long ago that a woman in the United States could not even apply for a credit card without the written consent of her husband. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974 gave women the ability to apply for credit on their own. And prior to the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978, women could be fired from their job due to pregnancy. Over the last four decades, our country has evolved into families where both parents are employed. There are more “stay at home dads” than ever before, and single-parent homes are more common than any time in the past. We have also made great strides in equality. We are blessed in our country with incredible opportunities for our younger generation—men and women. They are a generation that is eager to learn, get involved in their communities and make a difference. If you have the opportunity to mentor a young adult, whether it is a son or daughter or simply an acquaintance, I encourage you to get involved. Invite them to job shadow, encourage them and provide them with ideas for opportunities to give back to their community. The younger generation is the future of our country. Help to guide them on their journey, and you, too, will be making an impact in your community.

GOOD NEWS JENNIFER FILL-CROOKS always knew she would adopt children. Even after she had two stepchildren, a niece and two biological children, she and her husband, Mike, decided to adopt a daughter from China. That experience opened Crooks’ eyes and heart to the struggles of orphan children in developing countries. “I've always had a passion for orphans and children without families,” Crooks said. She adopted her daughter, Sophie, from China back in 2003. Crooks used her connections in the horse world to help start the organization, Uryadi's Village, named after the horse that took her to several top-level championships. When she acquired the horse, it had already been named “Uryadi,” which in Hindu means “festival to empower children.” Empowerment to orphan children is exactly what she wanted Uryadi's Village to give. A home for children After learning and witnessing the needs of children there, Crooks decided that Uryadi's Village would work in Ethiopia. “The level of poverty there is like nothing you've seen,” Crooks explained. “Orphans are the last to get resources and are considered a drain. Five million Ethiopian children are orphans—the highest in the world. We wanted to switch the paradigm where orphans contribute to their community.”

Uryadi's Village brings together Sandpoint locals for Ethiopian cause By Jani Gonzalez

IT TAKES A CITY She started Uryadi's Village in 2014 to support Wolayta Village, named after the local people there. The village is about two hours from the nearest city, Hawassa. She and her team stepped in when an international adoption agency vacated their facility in the town of Soddo. At the time, there were 18 children, 15 of whom were babies. The facility, which is where the children lived up until last April, was a concrete compound.

Uryadi’s Village is also self-sustainable. They are using permaculture techniques to grow the vegetables that thrive in their ecosystem, and the team is working with local villagers and teaching the children about gardening as well.

“It's not where kids should live,” Crooks said. Now, Uryadi's Village cares for 60 children, 21 of whom are younger than 1 year. And they recently moved into the first homes of Uryadi’s Village. Currently, international adoption is prohibited in Ethiopia outside of a medical necessity. Uryadi's Village encourages local adoption and fostering and supports the families.

Crooks’ team consists of Sandpoint and Ethiopian members. The team came together in a variety of ways. She and Sarah Klintworth were friends. She met Keller, the builder, at Evans Brothers and found Scott Rulander, videographer, online. She met Laurent Pelletier, their CFO, at a permaculture course in California who later moved to Sandpoint for the organization. She met her medical staff: Nichole Grimm, Traci Schmidt, Mary Quinn Hurst and Gina Woodruff, through the care they gave to her children with special needs.

Uryadi's Village has the support of the government, who gave them a land grant. Crooks' construction team, led by Standpoint local Erik Keller, completed a home for the children in March. Keller builds using cob construction, which uses natural materials for building. The plan is to have eight more homes. Each home has a house mother to look after the children. “We're trying to stay away from institutions,” she said. Poverty and instability are so widespread that babies are often abandoned. Crooks recently hired a house mother who was about to do the same. “Now she can stay with the baby.”

“We did a lot of research and didn’t want to create a foreign dependence,” said Crooks. A Sandpoint connection

Sponsorships and karma Uryadi's Village runs several sponsorship programs to fundraise for the children and their homes. “The houses go up one at a time. It's karma—the money comes in as we need it,” Crooks said. Uryadi's Village also relies on a children's sponsorship program. Initially, the first three child sponsorships came from former horse champions.

“Other organizations have multiple sponsors for a child. We work hard to create a relationship. [With us] they're a family,” Crooks said. “As we place children into foster homes, new beds open up. At some point, we'll have to say no, but there's nowhere else to go—how can we say no? So far, we've been able to make it work.” Crooks is also establishing a school sponsorship program where people can help pay for 60 children to attend school at $20 per month.

General and Family Dentistry Hank Willis, DDS “Gentle Dental Care for the Entire Family”

“We want to give back to the community by keeping kids in school. [The sponsorship] would buy supplies and help supplement the family income so the kids don't have to beg.” Crooks would also like to establish a sister city program with Sandpoint schools. “We could have a pen pal program with some of the classes here and also broaden the horizon of some of our high schoolers.” Family from across the world Crooks has 14 children, nine of whom are adopted: five from China and four from Ethiopia. She adopted her youngest, Tegan, from Ethiopia last year on an emergency medical visa that saved his life. “He was our surprise baby. He came to the orphanage on the last day of my visit last June. He had neurological issues from cerebral palsy and was dying. With us, he started to come alive, and I just knew he was the littlest Crooks,” she said. GREEN LIVING

FIND THE RIGHT WINDOW COVERINGS FOR YOUR HOME

“GREEN” IS A BUZZWORD right now, and it’s the “in thing” to be green. The building industry is no exception. Green building can mean using recycled products to build a home or incorporating new technologies that make your home more energy efficient. Examples of recycled building products can be old timbers and beams, hand-hewn siding, barn wood and metal. As with anything, there are extreme cases of green. I worked with an individual a few years ago who used recycled denim to insulate his entire house. It literally was chopped and shredded denim that was blown into the walls with a wide hose just like insulation would be. He also had Marmoleum flooring (which is biodegradable in a landfill) and bamboo cabinets made from a sustainable forest. Most people are on the more minimal green spectrum. They may have a few solar power panels, recycle rainwater for irrigation or integrate smart interior finishes like energyefficient window coverings. The window-

Bonners Ferry Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu • Self-Defense, Wrestling • Judo, Boxing • Kids & Adult Classes covering industry represents green using recycled products in the manufacturing of some of their fabrics, giving vintage or textured looks to some options, but mostly helping with the home’s energy efficiency. Most people buy window coverings because they need privacy, but do you realize that blinds also block UV and save our interior furnishings and flooring? They also help keep our homes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, in turn saving money on our utility bills. Plus, they can really lend a hand in the interior finishes department. Some are uber contemporary with wood and metal blends. Some are more formal with sheers and tilting vanes for privacy, and some are strictly functional and tuck up out of the way when they’re not doing their job. Technology has played an important part in the window-covering world, not only with product advancement, but also with smarthome integration. You can literally raise and lower your blinds from your smartphone or tablet or set them on a timer depending on seasonal sun settings. If you didn’t pre-wire, no worries, they can be battery operated. (Requires batteries changed out once a year.)

percent openness will block 99 percent UV, 10-percent openness blocks 90-percent UV and so on. If you want privacy, this isn’t your best option. If you want a cooler house and your interior furnishings to last longer, this option is for you. The other most popular window coverings are cellular shades, sometimes referred to as honeycombs. These are the most energyefficient window covering available because they trap air coming from the exterior into your home. They trap that cold air out during the winter and reflect the heat back out during the summer. This is a huge green upgrade to any home. Additional green upgrades to your home not only benefit the environment, but they directly benefit you.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

AND THAT’S A WRAP! School year comes to an end for Boundary County Middle School. By Jillian Chandler.

AS STUDENTS—AND TEACHERS— awaited the final ringing of the school bell, the declaration of the end of the school year and beginning of summer, it is the ideal time to reflect back on the incredible work of those teachers who dedicate each and every day, September through June, to the students in our community. And it’s the time to acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of Boundary County Middle School students. The last week of school was staff appreciation week, where, thanks to the generous efforts of P1FCU and other community members, teachers and staff were treated to a week filled with kind gestures, all in thanks for their hard work, support and sacrifice given to each student at the school. Tokens of appreciation included catered breakfasts and lunches for teachers and staff, as well as other kind gestures and gifts. Maria Martinez was recently selected Boundary County School District’s Classified Employee of the Month. Martinez strives to help students as much as possible, all while making the day brighter for all who come in contact with her.

As with the end to every school year, kids were anxious for end-of-the-semester testing, parents planned and executed a fun and memorable Eighth Grade Promotion Dance, and the eighth-graders enjoyed a carefree day at Silverwood Theme Park to reward their hard work, not just for this year, but for their three years at Boundary County Middle School.

all classes during their advisory time as well as the leadership class to end the day. Additional end-of-the-year highlights included student Emmet Melior’s fourth-place standing in the State Geography Bee Championships! The track team also had a great season, and literally ran away with the victory at their only home meet of the season. Students took the state ISAT tests, working hard and bringing their best to the table. Thank you to the parents, staff, teachers and community for supporting these boys and girls during this stressful and important time.

Several students and staff were also recognized for their trustworthiness—April’s trait for the month—and selected as April’s Citizen of the Month. Students were Cecilia Roemer (sixth grade), Rose Owens, (seventh grade), Emma Pinkerton (eighth grade) and Terese Luikens (staff). The students and staff were recently honored with a visit by Miss Idaho, Kylee Solberg, who stopped in to speak about her incredible journey, sharing the message with those listening not to allow anyone to stereotype you into inaction, and to be cautious of social media. Solberg was well-received and spoke to

In addition, as the school year came to a close, art students created fantastic art, computer students created a unit on 3D printing and band students competed and earned high scores. There was no slowing down for these students. May was also a busy month as students eagerly participated in cheer tryouts, a drama presentation, choir concert, Forget Me Not walk/run, talent show, Reality Town, field day and finishing out the year with their last day of school June 8. After a year of hard work, it’s time for both school staff and student to enjoy some welldeserved time off. Enjoy your summer! And … go Badgers!

Loved MEDICINE MAN PHARMACY CELEBRATES FIVE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY BY PATTY HUTCHENS

products that do not exist on the market, make gluten- or lactose-free products, and make alcohol-free, dye-free or sugar-free medications.

The only independent pharmacy in town, those at Medicine Man consider their customers as family, and they genuinely care about their health and well-being.

A recent addition is the convenient drivethru, making pickup easier for many of their customers.

The husband-and-wife pharmacist team of Shane and Aimee provide a variety of goods and services, many of which are not typically found at a pharmacy. In addition to the free delivery and mailing of medications, Medicine Man provides a discount generic list of medications, medication packaging on a monthly or weekly basis, and brown-bag consultations—a service that helps promote education of the patient on the medication they are taking and looks for possible interactions, thereby improving the overall safety of the medication. But perhaps the most unique service they offer is that of a full-service compounding lab. Medication compounding is the unique design of a medication for a particular person or need and is performed by the pharmacist in a lab. “It’s very specific to each person,” explained Shane about being able to precisely tailor a medication to an individual’s needs. The end goal is to provide a more therapeutic outcome for each patient. In addition to providing the customer with the precise dosage he or she needs, there are many other reasons pharmacists utilize medication compounding. They have the ability to make

Aimee explained that they also offer vaccinations for all ages and partner with assisted living facilities to assist them with their medication needs. “We provide weekly and monthly drug packaging, and our biggest thing lately has been our medication synchronization program. The program gets all of your medications due at the same time, and we call you a week before to verify there were no changes since last time, that refills are remaining on your prescriptions, and that everything is in stock and ready to pick up when you come to get your prescriptions,” said Aimee. “This has been a very successful program that really helps patients to have one stop at the pharmacy per month, or even every three months, which is great for those living far out of town.” Medicine Man also offers personalized, nonbiased Medicare Part D plan reviews. “I plug in the patient's medications, and we find the plan that best suits their needs,” said Aimee. Being precise and accurate is vital in the world of pharmaceuticals. To ensure that goal, Medicine Man Pharmacy utilizes a sophisticated software system that allows them to keep track of the med sync patients and their medications. “We

machines, so you won't find us counting by fives on a prescription tray. The Eyecon scans the label for the prescription, then has you scan the correct medication. If it isn't correct, it won't accept it,” explained Aimee. The Eyecon machine uses a camera to count the tablets on a tray and when completed, takes a photo of the pills and associates a number to each tablet so they can go back and check the image if there is a complaint of a shortage of tablets. “We ring out a patient at the register, our system shows a picture of the patient—which we uploaded from their drivers license—so that we know the correct person is picking up the medication. And, of course, we offer fast, friendly service.”

BONNERS FERRY IN FOCUS

ALLIANCE BRINGS QUALITY HEALTH CARE Hospitals focus on collaboration to benefit communities By Patty Hutchens

IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT a little competition never hurt anyone. It pushes people to do their best and achieve great success. But for the hospitals in the five northern counties in Idaho, they have found success through collaboration, not competition. For the last 27 years, the Northwest Hospital Alliance, previously known as the North Idaho Rural Health Consortium, has worked together for the benefit of the five northern counties—Bonner, Boundary, Benewah, Kootenai and Shoshone. ”The guiding principle behind the Alliance is that it makes more sense to work collaboratively rather than competing against each other,” said Sheryl Rickard, the CEO of Bonner General Health in Sandpoint. Craig Johnson, CEO of Boundary Community Hospital in Bonners Ferry, said that there is nothing quite like the Northwest Hospital Alliance in the state of Idaho. “The Northwest Hospital Alliance is unique because we work collaboratively for the betterment of health care in North Idaho,” said Johnson. Rickard, Johnson and the CEOs from the other three hospitals—Benewah Community Hospital, Kootenai Health and Shoshone Medical Center— make up the board of the Northwest Hospital Alliance. By working together, each hospital is confident that they can improve the quality, efficiency and cost of the health-care services they bring to each community.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

“We are all committed to remain independent hospitals, recognizing that there are things that we can do together to ensure that independence,” said Rickard. Through grants received due to their collaborative efforts, the Alliance has been able to provide education that would not have been possible if each hospital worked independently from one another. “We have also been able to reduce cost by participating in group purchasing,” said Rickard, who cites Meditech conversion, medical waste joint pricing and MDStaff physician credentialing software as some examples. But it is not just the CEOs who meet through the Alliance. Each hospital has specific departments that also collaborate on a less regular basis than that of the CEOs who meet monthly. Some of the Peer Groups who meet include CFOs, nurse managers, facility directors, emergency management coordinators, human resource directors, information systems directors, laboratory directors, quality/performance improvement directors, rehabilitation directors, community development directors and credentialing specialists. Caryl Johnston, director of the Northwest Hospital Alliance, said the peer groups have provided a benefit to all involved. “Collaboration through these peer groups creates an environment of trust and communication,” said Johnston. “The peer groups provide a great resource for those at all the hospitals and allow those in similar roles to come together and share ideas.”

Johnston said because of the education that happens in these peer groups, a patient who is transported to Kootenai Health may even be able to bypass the emergency room and go straight to surgery or wherever they may need treatment. “The smaller hospitals know how to prep and transport the patient. This saves time, and time often dictates outcomes,” said Johnston. Craig Johnson shares that Boundary Community Hospital and the residents of Bonners Ferry have benefited greatly from the relationships formed in the Alliance. “As a Critical Access Hospital in a small community, it is important that we be aligned with other hospitals so that in an emergency, the transition of the patients in our care to other higher levels of care can be seamless,” said Johnson. “Many patients who may have been transported to another facility in an emergency return to our hospital for rehabilitation and post-acute care. As part of the Alliance, we are connected together through medical records, test results, digital imaging and even providers of care. For example, the cardiologist that has Specialist Clinic hours on Mondays in Bonners Ferry is from Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene.” Chief nursing officer for Boundary Community Hospital, Tari Yourzek, RN, BSN, said that the hospitals share many patients and that transition of care is critical. “All of our peer groups have seen a seamless transition of care,” said Yourzek. “We are all seeking to provide the same standard

of care, and even though we are in a rural area, we at Boundary Community Hospital have stateof-the-art equipment and provide quality patient care.” She said the fact she and her coworkers are able to meet face-to-face with their peers in the other facilities who make up the Alliance is extremely beneficial to all. “When you get to know who’s on the other end of the line, the walls do not exist,” said Yourzek.

“It’s really about patient-centered care,” said Johnston. “If a patient needs a higher level of care than the smaller communities can provide, Kootenai Health can provide those services. But we know it is best for the patients to return home and to their own communities so we can assist in that transition as well.” When looking at the services that smaller hospitals such as Bonner General Health and Boundary Community Hospital now offer, it is clear that it is a result of the collaborative effort.

One of the goals of the Alliance is for individuals to be able to stay in their own community for their health-care needs. The members of the Alliance have had a longstanding agreement to not advertise in one another’s counties unless that county does not provide the services advertised.

“If it weren’t for the relationships formed through the Alliance, we would not have Kootenai Cancer Services [at Bonner General Health],” said Rickard.

One significant advantage of the collaboration is that all of the hospitals, with the exception of Shoshone Medical Center, share the same electronic medical record, which allows the receiving hospital to have a plan in place before a patient arrives, which can sometimes save a life.

“Recently, the Alliance hosted a Navigating Through Care Transitions conference where providers and caregivers from all over North Idaho, Washington and Montana could come together to improve quality and continuity of care for patients,” said Johnson. “Everyone involved came back with ideas and inspiration to help Boundary County residents and renewed enthusiasm for their work. It’s this type of collaboration by Alliance members that benefits everyone in North Idaho—employees, caregivers, residents and the community as a whole. It’s for all of us.”

“We’re not recreating the wheel. It’s like one large facility in a lot of ways,” said Yourzek, referring to the benefits of a shared electronic medical record. The Alliance’s goal is to benefit each of the communities in the five northern counties.

Church

The Pearl Theater: A landmark rich in history By Jan Lee

onners Ferry has acquired many landmarks during its 150year history, but few have fulfilled as unusual a role as the little blue church on Ash Street. Constructed in 1894 as Bonners Ferry’s first Catholic house of worship, the tall steepled church has gone through several transformations in its lifetime, each marking a new era of growth for Bonners Ferry. In 1913, the building was renovated for the then hefty price of $5,000 so it could accommodate its expanding congregation. In the mid-1900s, it was retrofitted again to improve the acoustic qualities of its stage area and was outfitted with a new balcony for yet more seats. And of course, to keep up with modern conveniences, new, never-before installed bathrooms were added when its next tenants, the Community Fellowship Church, took over the facility in the 1980s. By the time the building had reached its centennial, the tall, narrow church on the hill had been elongated and broadened, repainted and modified with loving care to meet numerous changing visions of its future. Finally, having again become too small for its membership, it was vacated and put up for sale.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

In many towns, the vacancy might have spelled demise for the 19thCentury wooden building, paving way for commercial development. But of course, this was North Idaho, where a stately wooden structure still has value, and historic landmarks aren’t given up easily. “It wasn’t that I wanted to buy a building,” confessed artist and former realtor Caroline Testa, who saw the sales listing for the church one day in 2010. She had just attended a sold-out performance of the Shook Twins a few months before. With no official theater at hand, the popular band had performed in a room atop the town’s fire station. “[The volunteers] decorated the hall as nicely as they could, but it was still upstairs of the fire hall. The show was so impressive and so professional, I thought: ‘How sad this is that they have to perform above a fire hall,’” said Testa. The performance, like every other Shook Twins’ performance that would follow in Bonners Ferry, was packed. But she said she was honest with the realtor, Jim Greenslitt, when she

called him to ask about the little church. “I remember telling [him] that I didn’t want to waste his time with a special viewing.” She asked him to please call her when someone else wanted to see the building, so she could “tag along.” She was sure she wasn’t his buyer. But fate sometimes has a funny way of changing futures. A little while later, Testa said, the price dropped. Then it dropped again. And before long, she had a new building for the community theater; and a whole lot of work ahead of her as well. It took months to prepare the structure for its next role. The balcony stairs were widened and seating was refurbished. The walls were repainted; the floors were replaced. The wiring had to be rerun. She and her partner Robert finished the major renovations just as the theater’s very first community performance, “No Tears for Love,” was about to open. A month later, the Shook Twins returned for their second Bonners Ferry performance. Testa had met her goal: The Bonners Ferry celebrities would be playing in a real theater.

Since that time, the theater has lived up to its name, said Rhea Verbanic, who served as the president of the theater association until last year. The Pearl Theater has become Bonners Ferry’s “hidden gem.”

overhead. But the monthly performances still take a lot work, said Sue Wilson, who currently serves as the theater’s president. A professional photographer, she also steps in to take pictures when needed.

“There are many people in the community who come in and go, ‘Oh yeah, I went to church here as a kid’ or ‘so and so got married here,’” Verbanic said. “To have them come in and see it transformed is really quite special.”

“We are working toward the goal of hiring an executive director, initially through capacity building grants, to oversee all operations of the theater,” said Wilson. “We hope to build a stable, successful performing arts center that will provide quality entertainment to our community for many years to come.”

The Shook Twins have performed at the theater for the last three Thanksgiving weekends, establishing a regular tradition of sold-out shows. People now travel in from Montana, British Columbia, Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene to attend the yearly concert. The theater has also hosted a bevy of regional and international performers, like renowned guitarist Leon Atkinson, comedian Patrick F. McManus, musical duo Bridges Home, guitarist Chris Proctor and balladeer Sara Grey, as well as numerous community plays and performances. Meanwhile, The Pearl keeps expanding. Last year, the Inland Northwest Community Foundation awarded it the Florence Wasmer Fund for Arts & Culture Grant to cover the cost of an administrative assistant. With a cadre of hard-working volunteers who run everything from the concession stand to the ticket sales, the theater is able to minimize its

Some 120 years after its construction, the building and many of the intrinsic improvements that were made through the generations are still being used. Bonners Ferry’s little blue church, while still an icon of the past, continues to play a role in the city’s unique future.

Spinal Cord Stimulation By J. Sorin Ispirescu, MD

CHRONIC PAIN CAN BE DISABLING for so many people, and especially those who have failed numerous treatments. Spinal cord stimulation can provide hope and relief for many such patients. These devices work by interfering with the pain signal traveling up toward the brain. Thus, they do not “fix the underlying problem, but they modulate the pain signal and can provide many with substantial pain relief, allowing them to decrease use of opioid medications and increase activity. Many patients who receive these devices truly feel that it has given them their lives back.

A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) is a surgically implanted device, similar to a pacemaker, which has wires going into the epidural space that provide a small electrical signal to the spinal cord. This device is connected to a small battery (roughly the size of three stacked silver dollars) which is the control hub. Like a modern-day computer, these devices can be programmed and can be controlled by the patient. This means the patients can control the intensity of the stimulation, change between various programs that have several types of stimulation or various locations of pain, as well as turn the device on and off. The devices can

have stimulation that is perceived by the brain and is felt like a tingling sensation in the area of pain, or they can have a highfrequency signal that is not perceived by the brain but provides pain relief. Most devices today can provide both types of pain relief and can be programmed so the patient can choose which type of stimulation they want at that moment. The goal of spinal cord stimulation is to provide patients with 50 to 70 percent pain relief, yet even smaller improvements in pain can make an enormous difference in the quality of life for many. These devices are not the first line of treatment for pain, rather for those who have failed conservative treatments such as physical therapy, oral medications and injection therapy, and who have already had surgery or there is no surgical option available. These patients typically have severe back, neck, arm or leg pain. Spinal cord stimulation does not work for everyone, but patients can undergo a trial with temporary leads placed for three to seven days to try the therapy and see if it works for them. Spinal cord stimulation was first used in 1967 and has been approved by the FDA

since 1989. Worldwide, there are more than 14,000 of these devices placed each year. Most of the modern devices are now MRI compatible, meaning patients can still undergo MRI imaging even with these devices in place. For appropriate candidates, these devices have been life changing. A consult with a pain specialist can help determine if someone is an appropriate candidate.

LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPLORING PROGRAM If you’re interested in pursuing a career in criminal justice, this is for you! By Patty Hutchens

T

rying to decide on a profession that one will devote his or her time to can be an overwhelming experience for young adults. While some may have a clear vision as to what their professional life will look like, others struggle. There are few programs that allow young teens to truly experience what a desired profession would look like on a day-to-day basis—something that would help make the decision easier. While there are job-shadowing opportunities, they may not give an individual a true feel for the job. For those teens and young adults who are considering a career in law enforcement, many cities offer a Law Enforcement Exploring program for young adults ages 14 to 21. The mission of the program is to allow those interested in the field of criminal justice an opportunity to experience firsthand, through training, practical experience and other activities, a view of the criminal justice system.

Having a true hands-on experience builds awareness of the criminal justice system, thereby allowing a young adult to make a truly informed decision of whether this is the career path he or she wishes to follow.

• Law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels sponsor Law Enforcement Explorer Posts. The program is endorsed by organizations including the International Chief of Police Association (IACP) as well as the National Sheriffs Association (NSA). In order to participate in the program, the annual fee is $24. Local Posts may also assess periodic dues or fees to support special activities or events. • The advantages gained from going through such a program include the opportunity to build a

www.universalwelldrilling.com relationship with law enforcement professionals. Having a true hands-on experience builds awareness of the criminal justice system, thereby allowing a young adult to make a truly informed decision of whether this is the career path he or she wishes to follow. In some cases, the training one receives through the Law Enforcement Exploring program may qualify the trainee for academic credit in his or her educational institution. It in turn can also help those young adults decide on what advanced education opportunities are best to fit his or her field in the criminal justice system.

• Even if one does not choose to follow a career in criminal justice, Law Enforcement Exploring allows one to grow personally in areas such as self-discipline and teamwork, resulting in higher standards when it comes to his or her personal and professional lives. In addition, the program also encourages participants to work toward achieving greater physical and mental fitness. • Law Enforcement Exploring is also a great way to develop or strengthen one’s leadership abilities and become more involved in the community. Police agencies provide much community service, and by participating in the Law Enforcement Exploring program, young adults can work alongside local law enforcement during various community events, information meetings and much more.

• Law enforcement offers a variety of possible careers, not just officers. Because of the nature of the job, those who wish to participate in the Law Enforcement Explorer program must complete a successful background check, go through an oral interview, maintain a certain minimum grade-point average, be physically fit and must be a person of good conduct and high moral character. There is a participation form to complete and an annual participation fee. • Interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement? These are just some of the Law Enforcement Explorer programs in the Pacific Northwest: The Explorer Program, sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Police Department, provides residents of Kootenai County an opportunity to work directly with the Coeur d’Alene Police Department providing exposure to everything from firearms training, crime-scene processing, medical emergencies, directing traffic and domestic disturbances. The program focuses on five specific areas: career opportunities, life skills, service to the community, character education and leadership experience. To qualify, the applicant must be between 15 and 21 years of age and be registered as an Explorer with the Boy Scouts of America. In Gig Harbor, Washington, the Explorers Program provides hands-on experience to those interested in a career in criminal justice. Those interested should be aware that the program does require a significant commitment of one’s time as well as a minimum number of volunteer hours. In addition to the skills that one gains, it also offers the participant an avenue to become an engaging member of the community. To find out if your community has such a program, contact your local police department. Who knows, the call just may get them thinking about establishing such a program if one does not already exist!

Kindness matters

Public servants, whether it is law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics or our military, put their lives in danger on a regular basis. As we celebrate our nation’s independence, we should make a special effort to recognize those who help to keep us safe each and every day. Public

Recognition

K N A H T l b U O The unfortunate reality is that police officers are not receiving the support they once did, but we can do a great deal to change that. Are you involved in a local club or group such as Rotary or the Chamber of Commerce? Invite a local police officer to come speak and answer questions. Also in that public setting, acknowledge some of the great things the police officers or other first responders in the community have done to make the town a better and safer place.

Adopt-a-Cop Pay it forward

Many communities have Adopt a Cop programs. These are designed to match a local individual or family with a local law enforcement officer. The people who have adopted the officer pray for him or her on a daily basis and also encourage the officer with notes of support. Prayer is powerful, and we can all do our part to offer the officers in our community with added protection through this ministry. Since its inception in 1998, the Adopt a Cop program has grown and is present in 24 states.

Y

Make it public

We think of social media as being a place to connect with friends and family. But there are many law enforcement agencies that have established their own social media pages to communicate with the public. It’s an effective way to disseminate information on road closures and community events and to provide information about the agency in general. It can also be used as a way for the public to show its support to local law enforcement. Post a note of thanks or support on your local law enforcement’s social media page, and you will soon find that good news really does travel fast!

Make a

special visit

! e l a S s y a D y Craz

K e u l Kids love to visit a fire station or police station. In fact, many have the opportunity to do so during special field trips while in preschool or kindergarten. It’s exciting to see the big trucks and to see a police car up close. A great way for kids to extend their thanks to first responders is to involve the kids in baking treats and hand delivering them to the local fire station or police department. Not only is it fun, but it can also teach kids the importance of showing gratitude. It will also have a profound impact on those who sacrifice so much with such little recognition.

July 14 & 15 Sidewalk sales! Markdowns in the store! And a Junk Sale in the back alley behind the store!

Write thank you notes

Writing a simple note thanking those first responders in your community does not take much time and has a significant impact. Involve the entire family, with each choosing a different recipient—police department, sheriff ’s department or fire station. Do you know someone serving in the military? Send them a thank you as well. Acknowledge not only the danger of the profession they have chosen, but also the sacrifice their family makes. Make it a Fourth of July and Thanksgiving tradition or randomly choose a few times during the year to take time to reflect on the blessings these first responders provide.

TRAVEL & LEISURE Unlike ocean cruises where much of the trip is spent staring into vast empty ocean, the scenery on a river cruise is always present and constantly changing as you make your way inland. Ships are designed with this in mind to give guests multiple areas to relax and watch the landscape go by. DeMarco added: “There are spacious public areas and lounges for socializing, making new friends or enjoying a cocktail before dinner. Ships have many outside viewing positions to take in the natural beauty of the area, which is great for the photography enthusiast.” As with traditional cruises, meals are all included, and dinner is typically open seating so you can dine where and when you like. Most trips also offer complimentary beer and wine with both lunch and dinner. Being inland, cooks also have access to fresh foods that you wouldn’t find on a larger ship. “The cuisine is prepared by highly trained chefs who source the freshest ingredients locally from the locations the ships visit,” said DeMarco.

T

ravel via massive cruise ship is an ideal vacation for a good portion of travelers, especially those who don’t enjoy extensive planning when it comes to their vacation. With nearly all cruises, your accommodations, food, entertainment and itinerary are all taken care of for you, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the trip. Ships offer huge pools and waterslides, athletic courts, casinos, dozens of bars, cafes, buffets and kid zones. They dock in popular ports and offer prearranged shore excursions that make sure you get back to the boat on time before heading to the next stop. One of the drawbacks to such a trip however is sharing your vacation with so many other people. Most ships accommodate 2,000 to 3,000 guests, with some of the bigger ships in the fleet taking on 4,000 or more. This doesn’t include an army of staff as well, often up to 1,000 personnel. From the Northwest, a roundtrip flight to New Orleans, Orlando or Miami typically isn’t the easiest, fastest or cheapest either. For those wanting a more laid-back cruise, free of chaos, a trip up and down one of the West’s most iconic rivers is an amazing way to see many beautiful areas.

CRUISE YOUR LOCAL WATERWAYS By Colin Anderson

“A more relaxed atmosphere on the river allows the passengers more opportunities to explore the destinations and immerse themselves in the history of the region they are visiting,” explained Tony DeMarco, a franchise owner and vacation specialist with Cruise Planners and based out of Gig Harbor. “With a smaller passenger list, the location they arrive at does not feel overwhelmed by people, which is sometimes the case with large cruise ships.” Instead of sharing your vacation with several thousand other guests, riverboat cruises often accommodate less than 200 people with some having space for only about 50. Passengers enjoy all the same comforts of larger scale vessels, just on a much smaller level. Another big complaint for travelers on larger vessels is the miniscule and often stale looking staterooms. Cabins are often a bit more spacious and unique on river cruises, and you’re far more likely to receive a room with an outside view than if you go the budget route via larger ship. “With all the comforts of a fine hotel, your stateroom has an ever-changing view of the scenery passing by. Most rooms come with a private balcony,” said DeMarco.

While river cruising does allow children, most parents choose a different route as these ships don’t offer the same level of child entertainment. This tends to offer a more relaxed environment on board and is ideal for those seeking a more peaceful cruising experience. This isn’t to say these trips are for retired couples only, as younger couples are getting on board as well. “We have seen huge growth in the multi-generational segment, and cruising provides a great way for families to travel together. Everyone can share time on board, but you still have your private space when needed,” explained DeMarco. The Columbia River is one of the most wellknown in the West, and it’s where you will find all sorts of intriguing itineraries. There are three main lines that service the area: UnCruise Adventures, American Queen Steamboat Company and American Cruise Lines. Each company offers different cruise lengths, and below are just a couple examples of what a local river cruise entails. UnCruise Adventures Rivers of Wine – Seven nights aboard the SS Legacy This cruise is all about exploring Oregon and Washington wine country. The ship employs a sommelier and an additional guest wine expert to accompany guests on the trip. Tastings at some of the finest wineries are set

up at stops within the Columbia Gorge, Walla Walla, Red Mountain, Columbia Valley and Willamette Valleys. Guests also get to explore both Multnomah and Palouse falls as well as the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area. Your ship, the SS Legacy, is modeled after a turn-of-the-century coastal steamer but with modern convenience of flat-screen TVs, air conditioning and private baths mixed in with industrial-age décor. With just 44 cabins, you will find plenty of space to stretch out and an attentive staff. Dinner is open seating, and there is a main lounge as well as a saloon on board serving beer, wine and cocktails. There are two hot tubs, fitness equipment, yoga classes and a massage suite for relaxing. American Queen Steamboat Company Portland to Clarktson – Eight nights aboard the American Empress The American Empress is the largest overnight riverboat west of the Mississippi, and its iconic red paddlewheel will at first glance transport you back in time. Guests are pampered in this luxurious ship where the dress code is considered country-club casual with no formalwear necessary. This trip is designed to follow in the footsteps of famous explorers Lewis and Clark. Stops include Astoria, The Dalles, Stevenson, Tri-Cities and Clarkson. This trip can be booked from Clarkston to Portland as well for those wanting to end their trip on the coast. Shore excursions are included at each

stop and feature museums and historical sites, state parks and downtown shopping. Each day onboard, the riverlorian gives a daily lecture about the area in which the ship is passing, and each night guests are treated to Broadway-style entertainment in the Show Lounge or piano and single performances in the Paddlewheel Lounge. American Cruise Line Highlights of the Columbia – Four nights aboard the Queen of the West or American Pride For those wanting a shorter trip and more time on the water, this trip is a great option. From Portland, guests travel to Astoria, Mount St. Helens and Multnomah Falls before heading back to the Rose City. Much of this trip is spent navigating the Columbia River Gorge with ample opportunity for photography. Both ships were recently upgraded and feature some of the largest staterooms available. Nightly music and cocktails, as well as dinner featuring fresh local ingredients, make this a memorable trip if only for a few days. If peace, relaxation and taking in the sights are top priorities for your next vacation, consider a cruise along the Columbia. There are trips for all tastes, and no matter what you choose you will be well taken care of and come home with a whole new crop of memories to share.

Downtown Bonners Ferry is the place to be Saturday, July 8, as the popular Bonners Ferry Swish takes over the streets. Recognized as North Idaho’s premier 3-on-3 basketball competition, the event is always a great time, whether you are a participant or a spectator. While there, stroll over to the city parking lot and enjoy the Saturday Farmers Market, which will take place 9am to 1pm. Also downtown will be a Street Fair on Main Street that will run from 10am to 4pm, as well as bounce houses for the kids from 1 to 4pm. Rounding out the day will be belly dancers performing at 6:30pm followed by a street dance that will begin at 8:30pm. You can also head out to the Fairgrounds to enjoy the spectacular sights of the Bull Bash, which commences at 7pm.
