GOOD NEWS FOSTERING THE FAMILY FEELING
Bonners Ferry High School students feel support of staff and community | By Patty Hutchens
LIVING IN A SMALL TOWN such as Bonners Ferry comes with many advantages. While people may differ in their response to how it has benefited them, it is likely they will agree that living in a small community has the blessing of knowing your neighbors and having the support of the community when needed. Simply said, it is a feeling of family. For students at Bonners Ferry High School, that same atmosphere can be found in the hallways, classrooms and offices where they spend a majority of their time. And it is not just the teachers and staff who lend their support and build relationships with the students; it is the entire community. Bonners Ferry High School Principal Kevin Dinning, who is also a 2001 graduate of Bonners Ferry High School, cites many examples of how the community comes together to support the approximately 440 students enrolled at the high school.
Photos courtesy of Tess Nix & Julie Smith “The community supports the school and our students through attendance at extracurricular and co-curricular events, working with the Booster Club, volunteering to support our many clubs and student groups, and participating as judges with student business projects and senior projects,” says Dinning. “Local businesses in the community support our students by allowing seniors to job shadow, sponsoring activities, donating money to the school, providing scholarships to graduating seniors, and helping us provide for students in need.” It is important to Dinning that the feeling of family is prevalent each and every day at the school. “We have a focus this year to look at our school as a family, both staff and students. Currently, leadership students are creating posters that showcase the different perspectives students and staff can have on the same situation,” says Dinning. “These kind of efforts produce more empathy and understanding in our school, and they ultimately work to provide a more compassionate life for the people in our building.” Giving back to the community is another theme that is important to the Bonners Ferry High School staff and students. Both the leadership class and the Future Famers of America students participate in school competitions to provide food for the local food bank and to support families in need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season.

Since graduating 16 years ago from Bonners Ferry High School, Dinning says he has seen many constants, though there have been many changes as well. “Our family focus has brought on some more school spirit, and I am proud of the students at Bonners Ferry High School. However, students have different choices and more responsibilities at a young age than I did,” he says. “Many of our students are already navigating college while attending high school.”
General and Family Dentistry Hank Willis, DDS “Gentle Dental Care for the Entire Family”
Dinning also notes that almost all students have cell phones and are tasked with having to learn digital literacy and responsibility in ways that are ever changing. He adds that with the increased opportunities with more classes, clubs, jobs and entertainment than when he was a teenager, there is also increased social pressure. “We try and help them navigate the process of being a teenager while living in a society that continually asks them to be an adult,” says Dinning of providing support to the students. But it is not just the students who feel the support from those at the school; it is the staff as well. Last fall, Dinning and his wife welcomed their son, Henry, into the world. However, they were required to be in Spokane for most of November and December. “The staff and students at Bonners Ferry High School were an amazing support system. It was overwhelming,” he says. “Students and staff were constantly giving us cards, notes, meals and anything that they felt would help us. It was a reminder of what kind of people this community produces and how fortunate we are to live here.” As principal of the school he attended as a teenager, Dinning has many goals—ones that go beyond academic success.
Enhance Your Look Today
“It is important to me that Bonners Ferry High School students graduate with an understanding of how much they impact those around them,” he says. “If students can leave BFHS with the mindset that they change others’ lives through their daily interactions with them, I know they can be successful citizens in our community.”

ESSENTIALS This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Kevin Callos
FINANCIAL FOCUS TIME FOR SOME FINANCIAL SPRING CLEANING
SPRING IS IN THE AIR, even if it’s not quite there on the calendar. This year, as you shake off the cobwebs from winter and start tidying up around your home and yard, why not also do some financial spring cleaning? Actually, you can apply several traditional spring cleaning techniques to your financial situation. Here are a few ideas: • Look for damage. Damage to your home’s siding, shingles and foundation can eventually degrade the structure of your home. Your investment portfolio is also a structure of a sort, and it, too, can be damaged. Specifically, you may have deliberately constructed your portfolio with an investment mix – stocks, fixed-income vehicles, cash instruments, etc. – that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. But over time, your portfolio can evolve in unexpected ways. For example, your stocks may have grown so much

You’ve Spent a Lifetime Preparing for Retirement.
in value that they now take up a larger percentage of your holdings than you had intended, possibly subjecting you to a higher degree of risk. If this happens, you may need to rebalance your portfolio. • Get rid of “clutter.” As you look around your home, do you see three mops or four nonfunctional televisions or a stack of magazines from the 1990s? If these items no longer have value, you could get rid of them and clear up some living space. As an investor, you also might have “clutter” – in the form of investments that no longer meet your needs. If you sold these investments, you could use the proceeds to fill gaps in your portfolio. • Consolidate. Do you keep your lawnmower in a shed, a rake in your garage, and your gardening tools in the basement? When working on your outdoor tasks, you might find it more efficient to have all these items in one location. You could also have your investments scattered about – an IRA here, a new 401(k) there, and an older 401(k) someplace else. But if you consolidated all your investments in one place, you might cut down on paperwork and fees, and you wouldn’t risk losing track of an asset (which actually happens more than you might think). Even more importantly, when you have all your investments with one provider, you’ll be better positioned to follow a single, centralized investment strategy.
• Prepare for a rainy day. As part of your outdoor spring cleaning, you may want to look at your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are clear and in good repair, so that they can move rainwater away from your home. Your financial goals need protection, too, so you’ll want to ensure you have adequate life and disability insurance. • Seal leaks. In your home inspection this spring, you may want to investigate doors and windows for leaks and drafts. Your investment portfolio might have some “leaks” also. Are investmentrelated taxes siphoning off more of your earnings than you realize? A financial professional can offer you recommendations for appropriate taxadvantaged investments. This spring, when you’re cleaning your physical surroundings, take some time to also tidy up your financial environment. You may be pleased with the results.

FESTIVAL OF HEARTS Benefiting Boundary Community Hospital. Article courtesy of the Fry Healthcare Foundation.
THE FRY HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION Festival of Hearts was a resounding success raising more than $37,000 in one night! With the money from the gala combined with funds from the 2016 Golf Tournament, the Fry Healthcare Foundation can now fund the entire $41,000 for the Spacelabs Healthcare Cardiac Monitoring Central Station Control System for Boundary Community Hospital. “We had lots of new faces and a few old friends at this first annual gala event,” said Linda Hiatt, co-chair of the Festival of Hearts. “The Kootenai River Inn put on a spectacular dinner, and the auction items donated by local businesses and private donors made the event fun.” “The highlight for me was the Dessert Dash, when we raised $2,641.02,” said Teresa Rae, vice president of Fry Healthcare Foundation. Each table pooled their resources and put together a cumulative bid for the table to purchase a dessert. The highest bidding table had first chance to dash up to pick from the luscious cakes and pies created by local businesses and individuals. It was a lot of fun, and everyone enjoyed their “just desserts.” The Spacelabs Healthcare Cardiac Monitoring System will enable Boundary Community
Hospital to monitor patients in the emergency rooms and the Acute Care Hospital from one central location. According to Paul Sogge, Spacelabs Healthcare marketing communications manager, “Spacelabs Healthcare is proud to partner with Boundary Community Hospital to provide the latest in medical telemetry. Spacelabs takes its name from the company’s origin in the early days of the U.S. Space Program. In 1969, Spacelabs medical telemetry monitored Neil Armstrong’s vitals on the moon. Today, the company’s technology is used by hospitals and care facilities around the world to watch over millions of patients every day. With the upgrade, Boundary County caregivers and patients will benefit from the latest telemetry system on the market.” The hospital’s new Xhibit Central Station, with a high-resolution touchscreen display, will provide caregivers a detailed view of any patient on the network. Ambulatory patients will now be monitored with AriaTele telemetry transmitters, featuring full-color screens to display heart rate, ECG and SpO2 waveforms. Together, these solutions will deliver critical patient data across the hospital network, enabling better-informed decisions, increased

efficiencies and a safer environment for patients. “It is exciting to be able to fund equipment that will improve the quality of healthcare for our community,” said Carol Julian, Fry Healthcare Foundation president. “The Festival of Hearts is a new tradition for us, and since this year was such a success, we’ve already started planning next year’s event for February 10, 2018, at the Kootenai River Inn.” The Fry Healthcare Foundation and the Bonners Ferry community have raised $1.2 Million to benefit the hospital during the past 21 years. They thank the community for your continued support of the Foundation and its fundraising efforts on behalf of Boundary Community Hospital. CABINET PEAKS MEDICAL CENTER - THE PREMIER HEALTH FACILITY FOR OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY BY JILLIAN CHANDLER BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
14
AT CABINET PEAKS Medical Center, located in Libby, Montana, patients can expect to experience a welcoming environment and a caring staff who is ready to cater to all of their medical needs. One such need is obstetrics and gynecology, in which Dr. Brian Bell, MD, OB/GYN, provides comprehensive care for all women of all ages. Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology for more than three decades—and the only boardcertified OB/GYN between Kalispell, Montana, and Sandpoint, Idaho—Dr. Bell prides himself in offering personalize care to his patients. From delivering healthy babies to healthy mothers, annual health screenings, cervical cancer prevention, routine and high-risk obstetrics, hysterectomy, menopausal problems and everything in between, Dr. Bell takes pride in offering each patient individualized attention and treatment and is dedicated to providing for each patient’s unique healthcare needs. Dr. Bell and his wife, Mandy, are fairly new to Libby. The couple, who formerly resided in Glasgow, Montana, both grew up in small towns and believe in the values of small-town living, with its interdependence with others, a true feeling of community and sense of belonging, low crime rate and the ability to make a difference in the lives of others. “We believe that Libby possesses these values and has a clear need for the services I provide,” says Dr. Bell. “Combine that with the surrounding mountains, forest, rivers, lakes and outdoor recreation opportunities, Libby has everything we’re looking for in a home.”
At Dr. Bell’s office, patients will find a staff that is small and personal. In addition to Dr. Bell, Jen Nelson-Roby, CMA, and Melissa Cady, receptionist, help in nurturing the individualized care for each and every one of their patients. March 30, 2017, marks two years in practice in Libby for Dr. Bell. “For over 25 years, I have had the privilege and honor of working with women of all ages to maintain and improve their health,” he said. “While many women rarely have health issues requiring intervention, it’s gratifying to be able to help those that do. Whether this involves medical treatment or surgery, I take pride in being able to provide these services in a local, rural setting. Finally, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as seeing a couple through pregnancy and delivery a healthy baby to a healthy mom.” According to Katheryn Stephens DCMP, marketing manager for Cabinet Peaks, “Cabinet Peaks Medical Center has always been committed to providing our community and surrounding areas with the highest level of service excellence and a wide variety of appropriate health-care programs, services and equipment.” It is more than just the extensive services offered that makes Cabinet Peaks Medical Center outstanding; their commitment to excellence and vision to meet the ever-changing needs of the community for health, healing and comfort sets them apart in ensuring the best care available in the area.
have to travel 90 or more miles to get the care they need,” says Stephens. “We do all we can to help recruit and retain physicians, including specialists, right here in Libby. Dr. Bell is a great example of that. He is a wonderful addition to our area, and his specialized services are very much needed here in Libby. We are thrilled to have him, and his wife Mandy, as a part of our community and our medical staff.” When not in the office, Dr. Bell, who is an accomplished musician, enjoys providing music for his church and the community. He also enjoys acting with the Kootenai Kharacters acting company. He and his wife have raised three daughters, Morgan, Erin and Devyn, who are now grown. If you are looking for a doctor who will be there for you, offering support and guidance, look no further. Dr. Bell is ready to serve you for all of your obstetrical and gynecological health-care needs. END OF A TRADITION Moose Madness and its contribution to the community By Patty Hutchens
IT WAS THE RIVALRY that every student looked forward to each year. Moose Madness, a competition between Bonners Ferry High School and Sandpoint High School, was a 10year tradition that focused on sportsmanship and fundraising for the respective communities. The event took place each December prior to winter break, pitting both schools against each other in everything from basketball games to fundraising efforts to the popular moosecalling competition. The event originated with Ted Reynolds during his time as athletic director at Bonners Ferry High School. But all good things must come to an end, and this year it was decided that the two schools would forgo what was intended to be a friendly competition. “It was a mutual decision between both school administrations based on an increased difference in population and enrollment at the high schools in the respective communities,”
Over the years, the students at Bonners Ferry High School have raised thousands of dollars to benefit charities. said Kevin Dinning, Bonners Ferry High School Principal. “Another reason that the administration began talking about the end of Moose Madness was due to the increased efforts necessary to manage the crowd, scheduling before winter break—two spirit weeks in the same semester, sometimes only six to eight
weeks apart depending on the homecoming date for football—and the possibility that the event was losing focus on the original intent of sportsmanship and fundraising.” While Sandpoint replaced Moose Madness with a competition against Lakeland High School, called Battle for the Paddle, Bonners Ferry is still exploring its options for a similar competition. “We are currently looking at options with Coeur d’Alene Charter School for a replacement,” said Dinning. “We are also looking at options that showcase all winter sports on the same night and provide an opportunity for students to flex their school spirit and give to charity.” Over the years, the students at Bonners Ferry High School have raised thousands of dollars to benefit charities. In fact, a few years ago the school donated more than $5,000 to Care-NShare, a local nonprofit that assists children and their families. Last year they donated more than $4,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project as a way to give back to veterans. The efforts of the students made a large impact and went a long way to help others. Whatever is done to replace the Moose Madness competition, one thing is for certain—giving back to the community will always be an integral component of the event. “It is something I will continue to look for, as we would like to continue to try and give back more every year,” said Dinning.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Proud Supporter of our Local Athletes!
BY PATTY HUTCHENS Looking ahead, he plans to attend North Idaho College. With his passion for sports and his desire to share it with others, he intends to study and pursue a career in athletic training. He also will try to walk onto NIC’s basketball team. “As an athletic trainer, I know I would enjoy working around other athletes to further their careers in sports,” said Chris.
CHRIS SABIN: A JUNIOR AT Bonners Ferry High School, Chris Sabin has always been passionate about athletics. “My life has always involved sports from a very young age,” said Chris. “I have always felt driven to compete and have participated in many different sports—baseball, basketball, soccer, football and wrestling.” Growing up in a military family, Chris, along with his best friends and family friends, all share an interest in one specific thing—their love of sports. Chris is grateful to his father, who has not only served as his coach but is his friend and biggest supporter, both inspiring him and pushing him to a higher level of play and achievement. The motivation and perseverance has paid off. While maintaining a 3.7 GPA, Chris has lettered in football, basketball and baseball.
When asked what his greatest challenge has been when it comes to playing sports, Chris said it has been his size, “but I have surrounded myself with the right teammates and coaches who have motivated me to succeed,” he added. “And thank God for a growth spurt.” There have been many great memories over the years, but Chris said one of the highlights in his high school sports career was placing third at state for baseball last year and finishing with a 24-3 record. Another memorable moment came when he was named All League in basketball earlier this year alongside two of his teammates.
Providing Boundary County with advanced reliable high speed internet service.
Although Chris is involved in many sports, competing in basketball is what he enjoys the most. “I love the game and the relationships built during the season,” he said. Athletics teaches one more than just the fundamentals of a game; it also teaches life lessons. Chris said he is especially grateful to his basketball coach, Andy Rice, who has taught him that the way to overcome adversity is by working hard and never giving up.

HOME TO HOME Pet web platform keeping more animals out of shelters. By Colin Anderson
Animal Shelter Executive Director Mandy Evans. “We decided to take a proactive approach to either help people keep their animals or, if they had no other choice, provide them with an alternative to shelter surrender.”
FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEIR PETS, having to give them up for adoption or surrendering them to a shelter can be one of the most emotional experiences of their lives. Pets are surrendered for a number of reasons. Perhaps the owner needs to move into assisted living where animals are not allowed. A move to a new city or poor interactions with children or other animals can lead to some really tough decisions. Panhandle Animal Shelter (PAS) in Sandpoint sees this on a daily basis, as do thousands of other shelters across the country. While PAS is a no-kill shelter, many across the country are forced to euthanize surrendered dogs and cats because they do not have the room to accommodate all animals. With this in mind, volunteers at PAS decided to do some brainstorming on how to keep more animals in loving homes and fewer inside the shelter. What they came up with utilizes social media platforms and web presence and the early results are quite astounding.
That alternative is the website Home-Homeome.org. Launched this past August with the help of the Northern Tier Inland Northwest Community Foundation and other grants, the website is a place for current owners to put up information on their pet in need of a new home. Those interested in taking ownership of the animal can reach out to the owner and the pet can be transferred without it ever having to spend time in a shelter. Within two months of the site going live, PAS saw a 33-percent reduction in owner surrenders.
“We saw a significant increase in owner surrenders in 2015,” said Panhandle
BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
“We usually had about 70 dogs in the shelter and nowadays it’s about 40. This is because fewer people are surrendering; and because the population is lower, animals are moving out of the shelter more quickly,” said Evans. The process in place for Home to Home is fairly simple. When someone contacts the Panhandle Animal Shelter wanting to surrender a pet, the staff or
20
hotline volunteers first get a proper understanding as to why this is happening. Often there are programs PAS can point pet owners toward for help covering spay/neuter, feeding costs and behavioral issues. It is always the first and foremost priority to keep the animal with its owner, however if this simply is not a reality, the Home to Home program is often the next step. Pet owners are encouraged to register their animals on the website. Owners will fill out their contact information as well as the breed and age of their animal. A photo is uploaded and additional information on the pet or circumstance for surrender is posted. Once that photo is posted, it is also shared on the PAS Facebook page and can reach its nearly 10,000 followers. Those looking to bring a pet into their home can click on the “Find a Pet” tab on the website where all of the pets posted on the site are located. If there is interest in an animal, the two parties agree to meet up. If it works out, the animal will find a new home without having to go through the shelter process. No money is ever exchanged, and the Panhandle Animal Shelter staff does a follow-up each time to make sure everything went well in the exchange. “There’s typically shaming involved when surrendering pets like; ‘That must be a bad person,’ or ‘They should have never gotten a pet in the first place’,” said Evans. “We are here to make sure no one is shamed, and we make the right choice for you and your pet.” Through the first seven months of Home-Home.org being up, 80 pets have been posted with 40 finding new adoptive homes. Just 10 of those 80 have ended up being surrendered to PAS. Without the site, it’s likely that each one would have been taken to the shelter. According to PAS, there are some very big benefits to avoiding even a few days of shelter for animals in need of adoption. Home to Home reduces stress on animals by keeping them out of the shelter. This leaves more shelter resources available to animals with no other options. The program also gives potential new owners a chance to learn more about the animals directly from the current owner. While many of the animals are in need of permanent homes, some community members are just looking for some temporary help while dealing with sudden life changes. A sudden illness might not allow owners to take care of their pet, and immediate family might need someone to look after the animal before they can take it into their lives. “We recently had a Coon Hound up on the site where the owner just needed someone to give their pet a home for three months. Incredibly, we found a foster home for the animal in just three days,” said Evans. With the initial success of the website, Evans is reaching out to other shelters to share the program and some of the early figures. Her twin sister operates a shelter in California, and the two are working on setting up a partner shelter system. “I was really surprised at the success of it, and this is really making a huge difference in our community,” said Evans. With an upcoming attempt to bring the program into the national spotlight, a bigger website presence is being funded through a private foundation. Locals can also directly support both the mission of Home to Home and the Panhandle Animal Shelter with donations through the website or by volunteering. The Panhandle Animal Shelter hopes that seeing more pets on the site and sharing these animals through their social media platforms will continue to reduce the number of direct surrenders at the shelter. Early indications show that this is entirely possible, and Evans is excited to see how the program continues to grow on both a local and national level. “I’m really excited to report back to the grant and share the success we’ve had thanks to that program,” she said. It’s never easy making the decision to part ways with a pet. People might feel ashamed, but reaching out to PAS you will not be shamed and might even find ways of keeping your pet you hadn’t thought of before. If your animal does need a new home, it is comforting to know there is a platform locally where you can find another passionate member in your own community, meet them and know that your beloved pet is going to a home where he will be loved and cared for.

WEDDING IDEAS ABOUND, but which ones to choose will set the tone and perhaps be the first memories of a couple’s new life together. Their wedding will become the touchstone of the vows they took in front of the people they love. Weddings can be as lavish or as simple as you’d like; what’s important is that it’s a special day for you and your spouse. Keeping things light and interesting is a sure bet in making memories. Giving the wedding traditions a bit of a twist will make your celebration unique— from the venue to the flowers and the send-off. They’ll create a mood for your guests—and one to give them something to remember and look back on fondly. The trends this year are an eclectic collection of elegance and simplicity. They are old favorites with a twist. It all depends on how much you want to wow yourself and your guests!
The Dress
Go DIY
The Locale
Planning a wedding is a lot of work in and of itself, but shave off some money by making some things yourself! Gather a group of friends and spray paint old wine bottles in different hues—perhaps your wedding color scheme or metallic hues and glitter—for use as centerpieces. Then, simply add a flower and some greens to each instead of having a florist design the centerpieces for the dinner tables. Or, get small glass bowls and floating votives or flower blooms. One can’t escape the pine trees living in the Northwest! Collect pine cones, and with a small handsaw cut into the pine cones to make place-card holders. Honor loved ones who have passed on with a separate table in their honor, adorned with candles and their own centerpiece. There’s so much you can do on a small budget—give your wedding your own handmade touch and use the money you saved for your honeymoon!
Brides and grooms are moving away from the traditional hotel reception to different venues in settings that lend themselves to a magical day. Decide your favorite locale. Is it a beautiful garden? A large Victorian house? By the beach? An old farmhouse or restored barn? There’s a venue for each, so get creative! Having a big reception doesn’t mean you have to get a castle. Consider a local winery; each has its own personality and space for parties.
Through the years, one can see how dresses have gone through a lifecycle of change, from simple to fairytale to anything goes. The styles for 2017 are still elegant yet eclectic. For years, the strapless gown ruled, but now you have offthe-shoulder short sleeves, quarter-sleeve and full. Styles look like they are a fusion of old and new. Think simple tops and long flowing skirts. Or lacy long sleeves and sheer-to-the knee gowns. There is short and flirty and long and elegant, all with a beautiful, whimsical blend of fabrics: organza, lace and chiffon in all shades of white, or for a newer twist, soft pastel colors. Top off your look with a lacy bolero over your shoulders or an oversized bow at the waist. There’s no reason not to find your dream dress from this year’s styles.
The Menu Skip the steak and chicken and go for local flavor. What’s a local favorite that you could serve? Is there a farm-to-table catering service? Have some fun designing food bars, where guests can help themselves to tapas-style appetizers, a loaded taco bar or even pizza! Let them get up and mingle while enjoying healthy eats like fruit kabobs, artisan crostinis

or vegetarian spring rolls. Have a table with a s’mores bar for everyone to assemble their own desserts or other smaller dessert offerings such as finger tarts or raspberry cups topped with fresh whipped cream. Guests will be entertained by the various choices, and it also eliminates the need for servers. The Cake Cakes are still often three-tiered beauties, but the décor is getting a makeover. Pastry chefs can make these memorable desserts look like gold, marble, watercolor, tree bark or stained glass. Or, go in reverse and have a naked cake encased in a clear glaze with the inner filling for show. Top off the cake with some fresh blossoms for a rustic, whimsical look. Is that layered cake too much? Some couples keep it simple and use a regular-sized cake as the centerpiece for the tables. Either way, let the dessert be an edible sculpture to be revered!

Photos and Film With the advancement of technology, there tends to come a point where we become nostalgic for “how it used to be.” The photography experts at the SLR Lounge say there is a current trend for the look of instant cameras from our past. Couples often still distribute them for guests to snap their own pics, but they now want that look professionally taken. Ask your photographer about mimicking this kind of film photography through the use of filters or special apps. Couples are also asking for stylized portraits of the wedding party that make everyone look like a high fashion model. Another trend is incorporating photojournalistic techniques where the photographer acts like a director to stage a scene that appears candid such as of you and your friends getting ready before the ceremony. Don’t think it’s phony. Most of us aren’t used to acting natural in front of a camera, so don’t be afraid to take some direction–you’ll be happy with the outcome! When you’re interviewing photographers, see if they have experience with these trends. Similarly, with videography, there are a number of unique ways to memorialize the wedding. A wedding video can be shot in documentary style to tell a story of the event. Ask about how such a style can be done for you. You’ll be surprised at how discrete videographers can be so as not to be intrusive on the festivities. You can have a photo montage of yourself and your spouse by submitting a collection of photos from each other’s lives. See what your videographer can do for you based on your preferences. The Festivities

Dancing doesn’t have to be the only form of entertainment. The possibilities are endless when it comes to simple yet fun ways to keep guests happy and making memories. Photo booths have been around for some time, but now with the addition of a video booth where guests record a story, sing or give advice. As the party goes on, see the “other side” of your guests shine! Additional ideas include having cartoonists and magicians— adult guests will enjoy them as much as any kid will. Treat your guests to a memento that they can take home or wow them with an entertainer who will send them home happy from a good party.Have a candy toss for the kids instead of the garter and give the bouquet to someone special instead of embarrassing shy girlfriends. Set up a lawn bowling game outside for guests to play. Whatever you decide on, have fun giving your wedding a twist on a tradition. It will give you and your spouse something to smile about on your anniversary.

Health & Lifestyle A TEENAGER’S PERSPECTIVE
Food. Life’s Medicine By Sydney Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor
MY MOTHER OWNS A GYM, so you’d assume that I’ve always been healthy. The fact is, I am healthy now because I have a pretty strict diet. Growing up was really tough. I was always going to different doctors, trying to find out what exactly was wrong with me, hoping every time I would get the magic answer to what was causing me so much pain. According to my mother, I had intestinal issues even as a baby. I would throw up so much my mom said she had to cut her hair short so I wouldn’t get it in her hair every day. I would constantly have heartburn, and I would cry all the time. As I grew up, it got worse and worse.
I would throw fits all the time. I had numerous sensory problems. If I didn’t have a certain amount of hair bands on my right wrist, we had a problem. If my shoes weren’t tight enough, my pants a certain fit, my socks on just right, we had a problem. The doctor put me on antidepressants for my intestinal issues when I was 8 years old. No one ever connected my sensory and intestinal issues. I can remember to this day feeling so alone and confused. I was so different from the rest of my family who seemed to be pretty low-maintenance people, including my sister who is only 19 months younger than I am. I felt like I was very much the problem child. I was high maintenance and probably very emotionally draining to be around.

My dad is in the Armywe moved a lot. The diagnoses would change as often as the doctors we had to go to due to moving every few years. I loved moving and the adventures it brought us, but I never knew quite what was wrong with me, and every doctor had a different diagnosis from the one before.

While we were moving around, I always had my best friend and protector—my sister. She never gave me any slack. To this day I hate it when people touch my face. My entire face will tense up, and I will freak out. She would hold her whole hand covering my face and tell me that she was going to keep it there until it didn’t bother me anymore. She kept thinking that she would desensitize me. If only it were that easy. Little did I know that not only my digestive problems were affected by food, but my emotional issues as well. I always struggled in school unlike anyone in my family. I always questioned why I was so different and why things seemed harder for me. I was in fifth grade when a doctor mentioned an elimination diet to my mom to see if my system was reacting poorly to the foods I was eating. My mom started researching and testing on herself before making me drastically change the way I ate. When she changed my diet, she changed everyone in the family’s so I wouldn’t feel like I was being punished. She and my dad started making

everything from scratch. It was hard for all of us at first. But then I made straight As for the first time in my life. I wasn’t in pain and wasn’t reacting as badly to uncomfortable situations anymore. I was a little girl who was diagnosed with everything from IBS, ADHD and OCD to Sensory Integration Disorder to finally feeling comfortable in my own skin. Once I started eating healthier, everything in my life changed. I was overall happier, even grateful for the life I was given. I stopped asking “Why me?” and started asking “Why not me?” I was so much more rational and mature. It was shocking to see that my digestive pain wasn’t the only thing that would go away when I ate better. Everything started to become better. I got along with people more. My grades improved. I felt smarter. Overall I was a better person. I have always had empathy for other people, but I would always think of myself as “The Victim.” I stopped making myself the victim and was instead someone who was productive and thrived, even in bad circumstances. I know now that things do get better if we work to make them better, and I have an overall better outlook with my differences to my family. I figured out my differences make me unique and not alone. I love the food I eat and how it makes me feel. I am better.

Want to get married but just don't know where? Are you more of a formal or informal person? Do you prefer indoors or a more rustic approach? The following pages might be able to help you narrow it down. As you preview the photos, take note of which feeling you're drawn to more. And maybe, just maybe, you might be able to picture you and your perfect day in one of these settings.
On the
Lake
The Inland Northwest boasts some of the most pristine lakes in the country. Take your vows and your guests on a lake cruise! There is a peacefulness that comes from taking a day cruise away from town. You and your new spouse can soak in the moment, along with the sunshine, on the deck of a lakeboat, then dive back inside for the reception and join the festivities with your guests. Cruise packages vary from two- to three-hour tours or overnight stays. Choose tours from Seattle or our own beautiful Coeur d'Alene and Pend Oreille lakes.
rustic
Ranch
Rustic weddings will always have a place in the Inland Northwest. The area lends itself to outdoor weddings with the forests and mountain ranges as the backdrop. Having a rustic theme conjures the feeling of balance and simplicity—long, wide wooden tables, bare walls, old rusty jugs filled with fresh flowers—but let's face it; there’s nothing simple about a wedding! Be prepared with a budget and shop your rustic venues. Celebrate the cowgirl and cowboy in you and flaunt the Western style!

Indoors
Play it safe by hosting your wedding inside that historic home or bed and breakfast with the option to go outdoors during the reception. There are many area wineries that each offer their own personal flair for you to make your own for the day. Around the Inland Northwest, there are a number of hidden gems perfect for a wedding.
Extravagent
Outdoors
Imagine starting your life out together on top of a mountain! Schweitzer Mountain has a wedding venue that's hard to top! Say “I do” with a breathtaking view behind you! Check local parks as well to reserve space in an outdoor locale that will surely be the most talked-about and remembered moment of your day! Add lavish floral bouquets overflowing from concrete vases and an intricate trellis at the end of the aisle; scatter flowers in the spot where you will exchange your vows. Extravagance means having every moment covered. Some fairly simple structures can be fashioned to hang chandeliers, flowers and greenery. The more flowers and décor, the more extravagant the reception becomes. Whether it is a local park that you reinvent as your outdoor event masterpiece or an historic home or bed and breakfast that features gardens for entertainment, there is no shortage of outdoor venues to work with. Keep in mind the rain when planning your event, as June can be a rainy month!

A barn wedding is a good Western venue that allows for the beauty of the outdoors, complemented by a lovely historic barn to take part of the day indoors or as a safety from the weather. The high barn ceilings decorated with strings of white light creates a mystical atmosphere. Huckleberry Huckleberry Wine – A native fruit found in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, huckleberries provide a unique and sweet taste to your glass of wine. Pend d’Oreille Winery in Sandpoint, Idaho takes the natural juices from the huckleberries and blends them with Riesling grapes providing a refreshing wine that has been a popular seller throughout the years. While it has not been produced over the past two vintages due to weather and low-yielding crops, representatives from Pend d’Oreille Winery said they have every intention of resuming production when the weather and crops improve. Until then, be sure to purchase it while you can! Townshend Cellars in Spokane, Washington also offers a huckleberry brut sparkling wine for those who prefer a little bubbly. If you have not tried huckleberry wine, you will want to be sure and put it on your list.

While some may prefer a sweet white wine to pair with their zesty foods, others are now turning to habanero wine to add even more spice to their meal. Infused with natural habanero flavors, the heat of the peppers provides the wine with an extra kick, offering an endorphin release unlike any you will get from other wines. If you are looking for that unique tasting wine to go with your next spicy meal, try a glass of habanero wine—and you might want to have a glass of water nearby, just in case!

Wine Looking to get your daily dose of fruit? Pear wine is perfect as a dessert wine or paired with cheese and lighter dishes. The juice from the pears gives the wine a light and flavorful taste and is sure to delight your taste buds. For those who want to try making it at home, there are many recipes online to get you started. A few tips include allowing the pears to get as ripe as possible without rotting. If they are not fully ripened, the taste tends to be more like that of an apple. Also, keep the alcohol level of your wine around 10 to 12 percent. If the alcohol level rises too high, it will not allow you to taste the full flavor of the pear. Lastly, be sure to use actual wine yeast in your production.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
National Parks PLANNING FOR A SECOND CENTURY IN A COUNTRY SO VAST and full of resources, it would be easy to allow all-out development to encourage prosperity and wealth with little regard to the land. Thankfully, during and immediately following the Industrial Revolution and Gold Rush of the mid-1800s, leaders in our country realized the importance of the special places across the land. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law The Yellowstone National Park Protection Plan, creating the world’s first national park that is one of the most visited wild places in the country today. The bill reads in part “The headwaters of the Yellowstone River… is hereby reserved and withdrawn from settlement, occupancy or sale… and dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” This was to many a completely new concept, but as more travelers flocked to Yellowstone to experience its beauty and wonder, more began to understand the need to save and preserve special places across America. Fast forward to today and the U.S. National Parks Service is responsible for maintaining 546 national parks, preserves, monuments, historical sites, memorials, battlefields, scenic lands and more. Created in August 1916, the National Parks Service (NPS) just celebrated its centennial.
BY COLIN ANDERSON
The agency has grown tremendously as the number of sites and national parks have multiplied over the last century. Park-service employees have the ever-changing task of encouraging visitors to these sites while keeping them maintained and in a natural and minimally disturbed state. Planning for the centennial celebration and setting goals for the next 100 years began back under the Bush Administration Centennial Initiative signed in 2006. For three years, the NPS took public comment through town hall discussions and feedback to hear what Americans wanted to see and experience in their National Parks system. Through an independent commission of science, education, conservation and civic engagement leaders, a plan of action was developed for the next 100 years. It was determined that to connect people to parks in the next century, the NPS must: DEVELOP and nurture lifelong connections between the public and parks—especially for young people—through a continuum of engaging recreational, educational, volunteer and work experiences. CONNECT urban communities to parks, trails, waterways and community green spaces that give people access to fun outdoor experiences close to home. EXPAND the use of parks as places for healthy outdoor recreation that contributes to people’s physical, mental and social well-being. WELCOME and engage diverse communities through culturally relevant park stories and experiences that are accessible to all.
The NPS has recently launched an updated marketing campaign called “Find Your Park,” FindYourPark.com. As the park service adapts an everchanging culture of online communication and sharing, so has its online presence increased. An easy search application provides an outline of each site’s location, background and planning information for your visit. You can browse by state or by park name, and with one click have all

While much of America is now seen as less active, spending more time in front of screens and too busy to take a vacation, visitation numbers point out that many of us are dedicating time to experience these sites. When park admission began being tracked in 1904, roughly 120,000 visitors passed through our national parks. By 1920, the number reached one million annual visitors. In 1963 we cracked 100 million, and in 2015 there were more than 300 million visits to NPS managed parks and sites. Through its Find Your Park Campaign, the NPS gained 1.2 million followers on social media in 2016, sold $10 million worth of merchandise and saw $341 million donated toward the campaign. It’s evident that not only are many Americans deeply passionate about seeing these parks but are more than willing to help keep them up and running through personal financial support. Living in the West, we are blessed to be near so many of these national treasures. In fact, during a weeklong road trip you might be surprised at how many parks you can experience in a short amount of time. The Big Three Traveling through Western Montana, you’ll experience some of the most beautiful open spaces in the country. Begin your trip in Glacier National Park, known as “The Crown Jewel of the Continent.” Here you’ll find ancient glaciers that have carved amazing peaks and mountain lakes into a stunning display. Traverse the Going to the Sun Road and explore miles of backcountry hiking. Travel about six hours south to West Yellowstone and be prepared to see other worldly landscapes. Geysers, hot pots, peaks and valleys dot the land, and many will spot deer, elk, bear and occasionally wolves on their trip. Log another 130 miles south into Wyoming, and you’ll be blown away by the Teton Mountain Range in Grand Teton National Park. Two hundred miles of trails await you in the park that’s equally beautiful but less visited. On a hot day, a float down the Snake River can’t be beat. Total Miles: 497

the information needed for your visit. Just like sharing through Instagram or Facebook, visitors to the national parks are invited to share their photos or stories to encourage others to visit their National Parks system.
Seattle Loop Those who can get out of the Seattle traffic will quickly find incredible national parks a short drive from each other. Just 100 miles northeast, you will find North Cascades National Park. Inside this park you’ll find everything from temperate rain forest, to glaciers, to dry ponderosa pine forests. With beautiful Lake Chelan included in this wilderness, there are ample opportunities for fishing or rafting, as well as easily accessible campground and hiking and biking trails. Another 100 miles west and you’ll end up in the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Preserve. For those who enjoy sailing or kayaking, this is one of the best places in the country. Whale watching tours are especially popular from April through September. Take a history lesson at the American Camp on the southern tip and the British Camp at the northern tip and learn why we almost went to war over a pig. End your trip by traveling
another 130 miles or so and camping inside Olympic National Park. Backpackers are drawn to the nearly one-million acres that include everything from glacial capped peaks and old-growth forests to 70 miles of coastline. There are 16 campgrounds inside the park and several day hikes, making this a great park to visit with children. Total Miles: 330 Summer is almost upon us, and you’re probably in the midst of planning your annual summer vacation. Consider a visit to one or multiple national parks that are not far from our own backyard. These lands are owned by all of us and are set aside for our enjoyment and recreation. Being in nature calms the soul, and unplugging as a couple or family can bring us all closer together. With another hundred-year plan in place by the National Parks Service, it is comforting to know that these special places will still be there for the enjoyment of generations to come.
FOR THOSE WHO ENJOY SAILING OR KAYAKING, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES IN THE COUNTRY.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS THE HUNT IS ON
Annual Easter egg hunt returns By Colin Anderson
ONE OF THE LONGEST RUNNING TRADITIONS in Bonners Ferry will again take place the Saturday before Easter with the annual Easter egg hunt put on by the Bonners Ferry Lions Club. It’s a time when families in the community can come together on a typically beautiful spring day for a sense of community and to usher in both the spring and Easter seasons. The hunt will be held at the Boundary County Fairgrounds Saturday, April 15, with the official start at 11am. It’s always a great time seeing the excitement on our young children’s faces when they find their first egg and keep looking for more. Before the day of the event, Lions Club members pick up hundreds of eggs and hard boil them at home with their friends and families. Typically, on the Wednesday before, the eggs are taken over to Boundary County Community Restorium. Here, those living in the county-run assisted living HIGHLIGHT EVENT community handle all of the dying and decorating of the eggs. It’s another great way for more of the community to take part in the event, even if they are unable to be there in person. Once the eggs are colored and adorned, they are returned to organizers who get an early start Saturday morning hiding them around the fairgrounds. There is never a cost for families to attend. There are different staging areas for various age groups, so excited 8-year-olds aren’t accidentally running over toddlers on their search. It’s a good idea to arrive around 10:30 to 10:45am to find parking and the staging area for your child before the 11am start. Kids have a blast, and parents and community members have another chance to catch up at another of this community’s great annual events. The Boundary County Fairgrounds are located off of Fifth Street and Riverside Street in Bonners Ferry. For more information, call the fairgrounds at 208.267.7041.
