People of all ages come together each year to participate in a fun filled weekend of basketball in Bonners Ferry.

BONNERS

FERRY SWISH A tradition for the community and beyond. By Patty Hutchens.

HOOPFEST IN SPOKANE MAY BE the world’s largest 3 on 3 tournament, but that’s just a warm up to the real 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament - Bonners Ferry Swish! A Bonners Ferry tradition, the 2014 Swish Basketball Tournament will take place on July 12th in downtown. In it’s seventh year, it is always a great time whether you are a participant or a spectator. And it’s not just Bonners Ferry residents who participate. Those who are young and young at heart travel from areas beyond our community to take part in this fun filled event. “There were 43 teams last year with over 150 individual players,” said Anne Tompkins of Boundary County Parks and Recreation which now runs the tournament after taking it over last year. The event will take place from 8:30am-8:30pm as teams battle to claim the title, and it is open to participants ages 9 and older.

Everyday is Family Day at the Pizza Factory!

The price per player is $20, and teams of three or four players are eligible to participate. If you originally register as a three player team and decide to add a sub prior to the event you can do so, but organizers advise that you must be sure to put the team name exactly as it appears on the original registration. This year there is online registration available for the many age and gender brackets. Organizers hope this will make it easier for people and there is still the option of mailing in your registration with a check or money order.

AN EXPERIENCE Those who are young and young at heart travel from areas beyond our community to take part in this fun filled event.

Bracket information and T-shirt packets will be available for pick up on Friday July 11th from 4-8pm or July 12th from 7-8:30am at the downtown location. Teams must have their registrations picked up during one of these times to be eligible for play. Organizers state that they will attempt to have the brackets posted online no later than Friday, July 11th at noon. The event brochure information are www.bfswish.com.

Valencia Wetlands Trust Pioneers in wetland management. By Joshua Nishimoto. IN THE WAKE OF FAILED wetland conservation by both public and private parties, the Federal Government directed company, Valencia Wetland Trust, stands alone and on top! Their greatest achievement being the nearly finished construction of the Old Louisiana Pacific Sawmill site and their ongoing conservation of said site. They service areas in all seven major counties of the panhandle, and their biggest consumers are Federal Highway Administration, Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), E.P.A., private developers and other government agencies. Valencia Wetland Trust’s pride lies in their work in streamlined, efficient project permitting and communication with project managers for on-site development and sustainability; standards previously unheard of in the industry.

ONGOING CONSERVATION Pioneers on the front lines of wetland management, Valencia Wetland Trust proves that proper management and healthy relationships among government, nonprofit organizations and private parties can prove to be a fruitful endeavor.

In 2008, the Federal Government codified wetland banking as the top preference for replacing destroyed wetlands in order to abolish the difficulties found in private and public land management. These difficulties included, but are not limited to: exhausting funds and other resources for land management, inefficient land development and improperly managed sites. The overall point being that companies were spending too much time, money and energy on improperly managed wetland sites. Valencia Wetland Trust has streamlined efficiency to work with engineers, consumers and federal and state governments. In both public and private land development, Valencia Wetland Trust takes on legal liability for necessary impacts to wetlands and, while partnering with other foundations such as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Valencia Wetland Trust protects both the property and perpetuity of the preserved wetland. Pioneers on the front lines of wetland management, Valencia Wetland Trust proves that proper management and healthy relationships among government, non-profit organizations and private parties can prove to be a fruitful endeavor. Donna Collier, Manager at Valencia Wetland Trust, states that “the most inspiring aspect of Valencia Wetland Trust is that it’s a government-sponsored program that actually works!” Collier goes on to say that although she is happy with the progress they’ve made, the highlight of her job has been to witness the return of wildlife to the site. She explains, “There are even two at-risk species that have started nesting on the wetlands site— the Hooded Merganser and the Wilson’s Phalarope.” Now that

the site has been restored, these species will have the opportunity to not only survive, but to thrive. Collier explains that the Great Blue Heron had ten recorded nests last year and that two years ago the first Bald Eagle nest had made its appearance. Collier loves watching the Osprey and the Bald Eagles compete for fish, a sight that will continue to be witnessed as Valencia Wetland Trust continues their work; work that Collier hopes they will finish within the next two years. According to Collier, this work will require “Tweaking of the major construction site, the fine tuning of excavation from last year and the expansion of the wetlands.” After the completion of this work, Valencia will continue the conservation of this site. They are currently working on increasing educational opportunities for children and adults. For more information on Valencia Wetland Trust and wetland conservation see: youtube.com/wetlandbank or Valenciawetland.com.

The Bailey’s and Kaiju.

Family Fun Day attendee.

Something To Bark About PBS Show Highlights Panhandle Animal Shelter. By Chris Shafer. THE SPACIOUS LOBBY of the Panhandle Animal Shelter (PAS) in Ponderay was packed with people and pooches for Family Fun Day, an event held on March 23rd. Part of the fun included face painting and a magic show for the kids. However, the biggest attraction of the day was 25 dogs, mostly small dogs, who had been flown in the day before from Los Angeles County where they had been rescued from two over-crowded kill shelters. The dogs were flown to North Idaho by Wings of Rescue, a non-profit organization based in California that provides air transport of dogs for rescue partners like PAS. During the Family Fun event, sprite-like children with artfully painted faces petted and cooed over petite dogs cradled in the arms of PAS staff and volunteers. Several of the larger dogs new to the shelter attended the party sporting leashes donated by EzyDog, a Sandpoint based dog gear company that donates collars and leashes to the shelter on a regular basis. Judging from the non-stop tail wagging, the pups enjoyed being the center of attention.

crew as they moved about the facility capturing interviews with adopters. “It’s a very emotional experience,” said Stanley as he spoke of witnessing dogs’ journeys from overcrowded shelters to new beginnings in new homes. In fact, the episode that will feature some of the dogs of Family Fun Day will be called “New Beginnings” and will air on PBS in September.

Chelsea, a two-year-old Chihuahua mix, was one of the little dogs adopted at the event. Rick Corum and his wife Holly heard about the event and came looking for a companion for their gentle Mastiff mix Baker. Baker’s canine companion had passed away and he’d been lonely. A Chihuahua mix and a Mastiff mix, hmm... could be a lot of entertainment value with this Mutt & Jeff pair. Maybe we’ll be able to follow up with them This crew was not filming for a local when the series airs in the fall.

INSPIRING

television station but rather for PBS’s Shelter Me, an inspiring series that celebrates shelter pets with positive and uplifting stories.

Amongst the crowd was a television crew who focused on those adopting the new-tothe-shelter dogs. This was a newsworthy event to be sure. However, this crew was not filming for a local television station but rather for PBS’s Shelter Me, an inspiring series that celebrates shelter pets with positive and uplifting stories. Conrad Stanley, a producer of the Shelter Me series, led the camera

Another lucky dog to be adopted was Kaiju, a 2-year-old Griffin Terrier mix. He went home with Amanda Bailey and her daughter Georgie. According to Bailey, the little dog was chosen because of his calming affect on her young daughter. Before heading home to Samuels, Kaiju and Georgie scampered about on the facility’s grounds. The kindred connection between the two was apparent. Panhandle Animal Shelter supports the Inland Northwest and is community partners with high volume shelters in our region, accepting dogs who have run out of time or failed their initial assessments

which would lead to a death sentence. Also, PAS accepts owner surrender dogs from all over the Inland Northwest, providing a safe place for people to bring dogs or cats when faced with this tough decision. Dogs from outside of our area are accepted only if PAS has the available space, allowing for continued service to the people and animals in the community. Thankfully, PAS had the space to welcome these dogs in need, and due to all of the publicity surrounding the transferred pups, the shelter had one of the best adoption weeks on record, which included adoptions of dogs who had been residing at the shelter prior to the arrival of the out of state pups. Kitty adoptions were up too. Now that’s something to bark about! For more information about Panhandle Animal Shelter, visit their website at pasidaho.org. In Bonners Ferry you may contact Second Chance Animal Adoption at 6647 Lincoln St. or visit their website at www.secondchanceanimaladoption. com. For more about Shelter Me, visit shelterme.tv. Chris Shafer is the writer and creator of Dog About Town NW, a regional blog that celebrates dog ownership in the great Northwest where outdoor adventures with one’s canine companions are typically more than a walk in the park.

Bee Friendly Tips on designing a garden where bees can flourish. By Sarah Polyakov. MANY OF US ARE aware of the on-going issue of reduced bee populations. The plummet in bee populations is due to wide spread use of insecticides and a reduction in suitable food sources for bees. But there is something we can all do to help. This reduction affects all of us since honeybees alone pollinate at least one third of large-scale agricultural products. Fortunately, there are steps we can take to increase all bee populations. By taking these steps, we improve the health and sustainability of our own gardens while also benefitting agriculture. Did you know that for a honeybee to make one pound of honey, he will need to visit two million flowers? Here are some steps that you can take to help. Just Say No to Pesticides While pesticides conveniently rid your garden of pests, they also harm bees. Mother nature already keeps pest populations under control through the food chain. Ladybugs, spiders, the praying mantis, and even wasps keep pests under control. Let It “Bee”

above the water line. Replenish the water daily, leaving parts of the rocks exposed, and place it in the shade. There Is No Place Like Home Bees need shelter from the rain and cold. Bees are happy to build their own shelters if you provide an area of untended garden or part of your yard for them to occupy. However, if you would like to provide a structure, many bees are naturally drawn to parts of hedges that are left undisturbed. If you provide the hedge, they will build their home. “Bee A Hero” and Plant a Bee Friendly Garden Many of the plants that bees use for food sources either grow wild or are commonly found for sale at your local grocery store. You can be a hero when you include plants in your garden from the lists below. Herbs: Lavender (all types), oregano, rosemary, peppermint, spearmint, and parsley, basil, and cilantro. Flowers: Hyacinth, crocus, California poppy, ornamental goldenrod, buttercups, clematis, cosmos, crocuses, dahlias, geraniums, globe thistle, and roses.

While many of us do not like the dandelions that take over our lawns, these wild flowers are an essential food staple for bees. Though ridding our lawns of wildflowers can be aesthetically pleasing, this action destroys a necessary food source for bees. This season, ignore the wildflowers and “let it bee”.

Fruit trees: Apple, apricot, plum, and cherry.

The Buzz Around the Water Cooler

Both the tips and the plants provided in this article are just a starting point. Please look online to learn about more bee-friendly options!

Bees need fresh, clean water to drink. You can help by creating a water source for them to return to each day. Choose a simple, shallow container and fill it with rocks that stick up

Non-fruiting trees: Holly, magnolia, maple, and willow. Vegetables: Cucumbers, green beans, green peas, sweet peas, squash, and pumpkins.

CROP Hunger Walk

Bringing awareness and financial support locally and worldwide. By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Julie Krezman. IT IS SOMETHING WE WITNESS all too often. Whether it is the national news showing pictures of starving children in third world countries or a plea from our local food banks for more food to stock their shelves, hunger is worldwide problem. Fortunately, there are organizations that are doing what they can to help reduce the epidemic and feed people not only across the world but also right here in our local community. Two years ago, Bonners Ferry held its first CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walk, raising not only awareness of local hunger but also contributing financially to help those who go hungry right here at home and throughout the world.

a goal of reducing poverty, including hunger. But Church World Service does more than provide food and water. They also help provide resources to communities helping to inspire those battling hunger to meet their own needs. Money has been used to provide seeds, tools, wells, water systems and technical training just to name a few. While the walk may be relatively new to Bonners Ferry, they have been taking place around the country for several years, the first being held in North Dakota in 1969. Today there are over 2000 walks nationwide.

The Third Annual CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Saturday, June 7th from 8:30am to 2pm at the Bonners Ferry High School Track.

The Third Annual CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Saturday, June 7th from 8:30am to 2pm at the Bonners Ferry High School Track. According to Event Coordinator Judy Dirks, the 2012 Walk raised over $8,400 and last year’s receipts totaled $6770. Each year 25% of the money raised has benefited the Bonners Ferry Food Bank, which is run by Community Action Partnership. The remainder of the funds goes to Church World Service.

“Basically the CROP walk is like a walk-athon or jog-a-thon. People get sponsors and then show up on the 7th between 8:30 am and 2 pm to do their laps at the BFHS Track,” said committee member Julie Krezman. “There is no required amount of laps. People can get per lap or flat rate pledges.”

“This is a community event, with the overall sponsor an ecumenical organization, Church World Service, which is comprised of 37 denominations and about a dozen affiliates,” said Dirks stating that the portion of the funds that go to Church World Service help with hunger-related projects worldwide with

In addition to Dirks and Krezman, there is a team of local residents that help bring the Bonners Ferry CROP walk to life. Included in that team are individuals who serve as the treasurer and recruiter as well as residents who are in charge of organizing logistics and publicity. “The local sponsor is our

Ministerial Association,” said Dirks. On June 7th, people can choose to walk at anytime between the hours of 8:30am and 2pm. There are many groups, such as the Scouts, churches and financial institutions who have a team of walkers participating in the event. While it is preferred that participants register ahead of time, they do accept registrations the day of the walk and encourage all participants to bring a donation. They have had approximately 70 walkers of all ages in the past and are hoping for more this year. They welcome strollers and wheelchairs on the track but bicycles, skateboards or animals are not allowed. Dirks stresses that this is not a race, but rather a fun filled event for the whole family. She encourages people to go at their own pace and make as many laps around the track as they would like. “Water is furnished, but we prefer participants bring their own water bottle,” said Dirks. For more information or to register you may go online to www.cropwalkonline.org. Donations may be made to those who have registered online as individuals or teams or to the Bonners Ferry Walk through that site. You may also contact Debbie Pauls at 208.267.7421 for a pledge sheet envelope to collect pledges. Be sure to mark your calendars and get your walking shoes ready. You will not only have an opportunity to get out and enjoy a walk in the fresh air but also help a great cause too!

Memorial Day Don’t forget to remember. By Patty Hutchens.

MEMORIAL DAY. For some it brings to mind the official start to summer. Family and friends gather for picnics, while many take the opportunity to travel during the long weekend. But as everyone knows, Memorial Day means much more. It is a chance to honor those who have sacrificed and defended our country’s freedom. First proclaimed in May 1868 by General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, Memorial Day has been a long standing tradition in this country. But it was not always celebrated by all states. The first Memorial Day in 1868 was celebrated by placing flowers at Arlington National Cemetery on the graves of both the Union and Confederate soldiers. It was a special day to honor those who fought in the Civil War. Five years later New York became the first state to recognize the day. Over the next 17 years several other states followed; but it was only the northern states. The South refused and instead chose to honor their fallen soldiers on separate days. Following World War I, Memorial Day was declared a day to honor not just those who died in the Civil War but also those who fought in any war. It was then the southern states joined their neighbors to the north and recognized Memorial Day. The day had always been observed on May 30th until 1971 when Congress passed the National Holiday Act making it a three day weekend. While many believe the traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over time, there are many places where it is still a very solemn occasion. For instance, over the last fifty years on the Thursday prior to Memorial Day, 1200 soldiers place American flags at each of the approximately 260,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery. The soldiers then stand guard at the cemetery over the course of the weekend to ensure that all flags remain. And it is not just limited to Arlington, there are places all around the country where Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts place flags on graves of fallen soldiers. And for those who have lost hope that Memorial Day is a forgotten tradition,

20   Bonners Ferry Living Local | www.BonnersFerryLiving.com

A symbol of Memorial Day which has lasted throughout the years is the red poppies that many purchase in honor of those fallen soldiers. take comfort in the fact that in December 2000 Congress established the National Moment of Remembrance which asks that each American, wherever they are at 3 pm, to pause for a moment of unity to honor those who have given their lives in service to the United States. It is a practice observed by many organizations across the country including Major League Baseball which will halt all its games for a moment of silence; and if you listen closely you may be able to hear one of the many trains across the country that blast their whistles in unison.

Western Pleasure Guest Ranch

Weekend Getaway. By Colin Anderson. Photos courtesy Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. MODERN CONVENIENCES have come to define life as we know it. Smart phones and tablets give us access to information anytime and anywhere. While convenient, these devices can distract us from seeing what’s going on right in front of us. They can also block communication among family members leading parents to look for a place to ‘unplug’ when planning their next vacation. Nature is one of the best places to accomplish this. Instead of the stimulation of a large city, you are otherwise surrounded by forests, fresh water, wildlife, and nature’s TV - the campfire. While there are hundreds of campsites and cabins to choose from, few places offer the comfort, seclusion, activities, and experience of Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. With five generations calling the ranch home since 1940, Western Pleasure Guest Ranch offers its guests a year round look into the everyday life of today’s ranchers. The property is filled with history of the region, beautiful views of the Cabinet and Selkirk Mountains, and a friendly staff that boasts incredible knowledge of the area. Set just 16 miles from downtown Sandpoint, WPGR has the feel like you’re miles from anywhere. The property covers 1,100 acres and is adjacent to thousands more, filled with trails, wildlife, sweeping views, and adventure. The center of the ranch is the beautiful ten thousand square foot grand lodge. The lodge is made from local timber and features six guest rooms, each with a private bath, ideal for couples or those traveling with a young child. The lodge includes a recreation room with a pool table and movies, shared great room, and a large loft. Outside you will find a hot tub, basketball court, playground and more. WPGR also offers four cabins for rent. Each is fully furnished, includes a kitchen, bathroom, porch, and wood stove. These cabins offer beautiful

views of the meadow where cattle and horses graze and deer, elk, and moose trot by from time to time. What brings most visitors to the Western Pleasure Guest Ranch are the stars of the show - the horses. There are approximately 50 horses all of which are trained on-site and ideal for inexperienced riders. Professional wranglers will teach you the basics and be your guides as you explore hundreds of acres. During the summer there are morning and afternoon rides including one that takes you to a great swimming hole. There is also a dinner ride, lessons in the arena, arena games, and more. The children’s program teaches 8 to 18 year olds proper handling. At the end of the week, kids will take part in a live show with demonstrations, awards, and ribbons. When winter rolls around horse drawn sleigh rides offer a unique experience that ends with dinner and live entertainment. If you prefer to explore on foot, you will find

Health&Lifestyle Middle-Aged Musings It’s so not fair!

By Teresa Pesce.

This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. REMEMBER THE DAYS WHEN you could eat hard-boiled eggs and grapefruit for a week and drop ten pounds? Exercise for a few months and see results? I find that the middle aged body laughs at diets, becomes positively hysterical when you try to change it with exercise, and if forced to change by gut-wrenching Herculean efforts, reverts to its original form the moment you relax your efforts.

have a tissue.

My older brother told me as gently as possible, passing me boxes of Kleenex as I wept, that in one’s mature years it takes about three months of unrelenting exercise to even build a FOUNDATION upon which to BEGIN to get in shape. In middle age, we get in shape at a slower pace and get out of shape at a faster pace. Are we clear? Here,

True story: I stopped exercising after six months because I didn’t get the results I expected, and I am here to tell you: Do. Not. Do. That. Drop the latte, pick up the weights and persevere. But be clear on expectations.

If you get discouraged and comfort yourself with mocha lattes, the results you’re discouraged by will disappear completely, leaving you wanting them back even though they weren’t good enough for you before! Sort of like an ex-boyfriend.

We’ve all seen the ads where an Amazonian beauty demonstrates a

piece of exercise equipment, with the smiling promise of equal results by using it for 20 minutes, three times a week. While we may all suspect that promise isn’t true, even credible sources promise results from doing cardio and weights three to five days a week. Convinced, I made a commitment to exercise. I was going to be a goddess! After six months of dragging myself out of bed at 5:30 am SIX days a week for a half hour of cardio followed by free weights and stretching, I presented myself to the gym pixie to be weighed, measured and fat-counted. I never missed a workout, steadily upped the treadmill speed and incline, increased the weights and broke a good sweat every time. I ate only nutritious food. I dropped one pants size! I was so proud of myself and excited to behold the rewards of my efforts. I stepped on the scale and stood still for the tape and held the fat-measuring thingie steady. The results? Drum roll, please: I had not lost a single pound, not shrunk by so much as an eighth of an inch anywhere, and my fat count had reduced by less than one percent. What??

If you get discouraged and comfort yourself with mocha lattes, the results you’re discouraged by will disappear quote here leaving completely, you wanting them back even though they weren’t good enough for you before! Sort of like an ex-boyfriend.

WHAT?! Half a year of workouts and all I did was tone up? The fitness industry LIED! Yes, muscle weighs more than fat, but still! So I stopped working out, and … you don’t want to know. You don’t want to look, either. Lesson learned? Results take more time and effort as you age, but don’t quit! Even Christie Brinkley says she is astonished by how much she has to do now, to maintain the body she has always had.

Founder of Sandpoint Onstage, Teresa Pesce is dedicated to supporting and promoting everyone in our community with theatrical gifts, whose age is irrelevant and whose only “weight” is the impact of their art.

Why You Need A Personal Trainer

The benefits are more than you realize. By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Trainer, FAST Program Director at PneuThera in Sandpoint. NEXT TIME YOU ATTEND a sporting event or watch it on television, check and see if the teams you are watching have a coach present. When you find that coach (or coaches), observe their behavior. Are they quiet and complacent, or are they providing motivation and encouragement for their players? Watch as they instruct and direct throughout the contest. I bet that coach was at every practice session, expecting all his players to participate, setting up drills to increase skills, instructing players on where they can improve. Even the professional teams with the highest level athletes have coaches, and usually more than one. So why do they need a coach? Couldn’t they put on their uniforms, get to the field or court, warm-up, and then play the game without a coach present? They could, but who would decide who’s starting, when substitutes come in, what strategies and plans will be in use? The coach brings the knowledge base and direction beneficial to the organization and flow of the team, providing a foundation for success. You can put on your exercise clothes, get to the gym or fitness center, warm-up, and workout all on your own. But are you getting the most out of that workout? Are you lifting weights with proper form, preventing future injury to your body? Do you have a good understanding of how many repetitions and sets you need to execute for your specific goals? What about cardio exercise? Do you need to do it? How often and at what intensity? How did you prepare your body for exercise?

And what about that day you just can’t get motivated to work out? Perhaps you need to hire a coach? Personal Trainers are personal life coaches, helping you to successfully attain your exercise and weight loss goals. They help you to stay motivated through their encouragement and accountable through their dedication to you. A skilled and knowledgeable trainer will fully assess your needs and concerns, using their expertise to create a personalized exercise plan for you. Exercise benefits will be maximized in the allotted time with variety in exercises to alleviate boredom and continually challenge the muscles. There are plenty of deterrents that will come to mind. Personal Trainers cost money. A good trainer will push you towards the top of your workout capabilities, challenging you to excel. Muscle soreness and fatigue may be a by-product of your work. You may worry about your level of competence and what to expect in a training session, fearing you may fail in your attempts to participate. Perhaps you have trainer trauma from a previous experience. Many different forms of training are available, from private sessions to larger class sessions that may be less costly. Ask questions and make your desires and needs known. Your investment in a healthy body will correct your imbalances, keeping you from costly injury. You’re stronger than you think you are and it all gets easier with time and practice. Find your foundation for success! I support your journey!

Aging & Diet

How should we really be eating as we age? By By Bruce Weaver, MPA, PA-C, President & CEO AAging Better In-Home Care. Authentic

isine Mexican Cu

FROM THE TIME that Americans began leaving behind farmlands to move into urban areas in search of jobs or a better lifestyle, our diets began changing—unfortunately, not always for the better. Foods purchased from the corner grocery stores began replacing the foods and products that had traditionally always been made or grown at home; things such as fresh eggs from the family chicken coop, meat from animals grown on the family farm, milk from the family cow, homemade bread made from whole grains and fruits and vegetables grown on the farm. Access to freshly grown local vegetables and fruits became almost non-existent. Convenience became the byword of the American eating experience, with instant potatoes, canned drinks and sodas in every flavor, cake mixes and cookies, prepackaged frozen dishes, white-flour sweetened breads from bakeries and grocery stores, easy drivethrough fast-food restaurants and cheap snacks in convenience stores and on grocery shelves. But along with all this convenience came ever-increasing cases of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancers in the American public.

Research into the American diet and the effects of all these changes on our health has been ongoing for several decades and continues to increase as research dollars continue to become available. Every year it seems new discoveries are being made about what happens to our bodies when we ingest the many additives put in most of our prepackaged or prepared products to preserve them or make them taste better. What we’ve come to discover over these decades of research is that we often don’t know for sure exactly which additives or chemicals in our foods might do long-term harm. The Federal Department

of Agriculture (FDA) has approved all of these additives because it has determined that there is no short-term harm, but it’s unknown exactly what effects they might have on our bodies over 40-50 years. What we do know is that obesity, diabetes, and heart disease increased markedly in individual populations that ate high levels of fast foods, convenience foods and sugared drinks, things like sodas and kool-aids. But in those populations that either ate or switched to a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat meats, legumes (beans), lower amounts of oils, along with small amounts of raw seeds and nuts once or twice a week, these individuals had better health outcomes overall. Probably one of the most interesting findings in a recent study appears to be the role of protein in older individuals. This study looked at the health and nutrition habits of 6,381 individuals over an 18 year period and discovered that very high protein diets in middleaged Americans left them more than four times as likely to die of cancer or diabetes. However, it had the opposite effect on Americans 66 and older. These older individuals were 60 percent less likely to die of cancer and 28 percent less likely to die of any cause. What this tells us is that diet has and always will have a significant effect on health, regardless of how we slice the pie.
