PUBLISHER Gratitude For Growth We Set the Standard!
WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR? For adults the answers can be varied. For many we are grateful to have a steady job, a home and food on the table. But there are many who struggle each and every day, not knowing where their next meal will come from or where they will lay their head down each night for some much-needed rest. We at Living Local Magazines are so grateful for our small business community. We have the chance every day to interact with the key players in our local economy. More money spent at local retailers and small businesses means more money flows back into our economy, trickling down and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. While we are blessed to live in a beautiful community, there are things about our town that are not visible to everyone. There are children who go to school each day hungry. Families who have faced unemployment, poverty and homelessness. This is the reality. It is easy to get engrossed in all of the holiday planning that we often forget to stop and be truly aware of those less fortunate. The good news is there are many ways in which each of us can help. Next time you are at the store, put a few extra items in your grocery cart and swing by the food bank on your way home. If you see one of the Salvation Army Red Kettles, stop and drop a few dollars into it. Better yet, if you have a child with you let him or her make the donation; it is never too early to teach the act of giving. Whatever you choose to do, I guarantee one thing – your act of kindness will leave you feeling more fulfilled. We at Living Local would like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and extend a heartfelt “Thank You” for letting us be a part of this very special community. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

VOLUME 6 NUMBER 12
This Is My Wish During this season of Christmas, we focus on the peace and joy that the birth of Jesus brought to us. But with all that is going on in the world, with struggles among countries and conflicts that may be present in our own personal lives, it is difficult to sometimes find that peace that we all crave. In this article by Teresa Pesce, she explores how finding peace begins at home, in our own hearts.

There is unrest in America right now as we look at all the pro and antipolice movements. With hashtags such as #blacklivesmatter and #thethinblueline, we see both sides of a national argument pitting one against the other. In this story by Lindsay Murray, we explore the reality of police families in the hope of humanizing the struggles that police families have and the sacrifices they make on a daily basis so that their husbands and wives can work in their chosen career. We’re all human; we all deserve decency. #chooselove

GOOD NEWS
NOURISHING OUR CHILDREN BoCo Backpack Program gets extra boost this holiday season Article By Patty Hutchens
IT IS A WELL-KNOWN FACT that when students are well nourished, they tend to be more focused, well rested and energetic. We don’t need studies to prove this; all we need is to observe students in a classroom. But in a world where poverty and hunger are prevalent, kids are coming to school each and every day just waiting for the moment when they can eat lunch. While we may think this issue is not a local one, nothing could be further from the truth. For those families in Boundary County who struggle to put food on their tables, the BoCo Backpack Program has been a blessing. The mission of the program is to send food home with each child in need on the last school day before the weekend, ensuring that they are well nourished over the weekend. Shirley Anderson, who has been involved with the program since its inception, explained that the program, now in its seventh year, began when the Boundary County School District went to a four-day school week. “The concern was for kids in the free and reduced lunch program that they would go a long time without food,” she said of the three-day weekend. A group of concerned community members gathered together and found a way to help those young students. The group is made up of all volunteers ensuring that 100 percent of money collected goes directly to feed the children. BoCo Backpacks is sponsored by Trinity Lutheran Church, which provides space for their meetings, a mailbox and insurance. The group also uses the church’s 501(c) (3) status so donations to the program are tax deductible according to Anderson. “We are so fortunate to be associated with the church,” she said. The bags, which weigh in excess of seven pounds each, are filled with shelf-ready food; items that need not be refrigerated or cooked.
BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
In its first year, the group began in Naples Elementary School and served 25 students. In its second year it added Mount Hall Elementary and has continued to grow. Today, it serves students at Naples Elementary School, Mount Hall Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Boundary County Middle School and the local Head Start program. As the program has continued, the need has grown. Last year BoCo Backpacks served 135 children each week, and this year they are already approaching the 150 mark. The food kits are purchased from Second Harvest in Spokane and cost $6 each. Because it can often be difficult to discern which students are in need, the group depends upon the staff at the schools who work closely with the students to help identify those children who will benefit from the program. This year they have included teachers in the Middle School in the process to ensure they are reaching as many kids as possible. “We also send a letter home with the fifth graders each year letting them know that (the program) will continue in Middle School,” said Anderson. And when it comes to distributing the bags each Thursday afternoon, the process is very discreet. Second Harvest visits the Bonner Mall in Sandpoint each month and a volunteer for BoCo Backpacks travels to Sandpoint to pick up a onemonth supply of food for the students in Boundary County School District. There are storage spaces at each school and volunteers rotate the food and distribute it. The group has about a dozen people who volunteer on a regular basis and also receives assistance from the leadership classes in Boundary County Middle School and Bonners Ferry High School. It’s kids helping kids. “We are careful on how we do it to ensure anonymity,” said Anderson

who describes how the bags are associated with a locker number and are placed into the lockers. The group is anticipating needing a minimum of $25,000 to fulfill its need this year, but with the number of students already at almost 150, it will likely exceed that. “Every year we are experiencing significant growth,” said Anderson. To help raise money for this worthy program, the Fry Foundation has offered its support this Christmas season. There will be a large Christmas tree in Boundary Community Hospital that will be filled with 150 ornaments created by the children in our local schools. People are invited to choose an ornament from the tree in exchange for a donation. Once the ornament is purchased, it will be replaced by another that will have the name of the purchaser on it. Boundary Community Hospital’s Marketing and Community Relations Director, Lauren Kuczka, said the Christmas Giving Tree will be on display from November 20 to December 30 during normal business hours.
This year, stuff their This year, stuff their piggy banks instead banks instead of theirpiggy stockings

“Ornaments will also be available at the local American Legion Craft Fair at the Boundary County Fairgrounds on December 2 and 3,” said Kuczka. “One hundred percent of the donations received will be used to provide food for children in Boundary County through the BoCo Backpack Program and Boundary Community Hospital will make matching contributions based on the number of ornaments distributed.”

ESSENTIALS LIFE INSURANCE 101 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
LIFE INSURANCE; EVERYONE says it’s important but it can be a difficult topic to talk about and even more difficult to understand. However, it is a critical topic to grasp because of its importance when building a financial strategy. Life insurance is a cornerstone of a sound financial strategy. It can help provide for the people and organizations you care about. Choosing the right life insurance solution makes a difference in the future of your loved ones and gives you peace of mind knowing they'll be taken care of. Here’s a quick primer on some of the most common types of life insurance. • Term Life Insurance – Temporary life insurance that offers simply a death benefit and is generally less expensive than permanent insurance. It's ideal for short-term life insurance needs, like when you are raising a family, paying off a mortgage or starting a business. • Whole Life Insurance – Permanent life insurance that gives you a guaranteed death benefit, guaranteed level premiums and guaranteed cash value

14
that increases each year. The guarantees are contingent on all premiums being paid and no loans or changes being made to the contract. • Whole Life Plus Term Protection – Permanent life insurance with added flexibility. It lets you "dial-in" your premium to the level of whole life and term insurance desired. Offers lifetime protection through a blend of whole life insurance plus term insurance and paid-up additional coverage. • Universal Life Insurance – Permanent life insurance that allows you to increase or decrease your death benefit and your premium is flexible, subject to any limitations in the contract. Accumulated value in a universal life contract earns interest at a current rate, with a minimum rate stated in the contract. • Variable Universal Life Insurance – Permanent life insurance that gives you a flexible premium and the potential to build accumulated value. However, death benefits and other values may vary, because you direct how the cash is invested among the investment portfolios offered. The investment performance has no guarantees and could lose money.
lifetime, consider the following factors: • Your current annual earnings. • The amount your annual earnings may increase. • How many years you plan to work until retirement. • The rate of return you expect your invested assets to earn. You can use these numbers as a starting point when you sit down with a financial professional to determine the level of coverage you might need. Another key factor is the consideration of how much of your future economic value you want to replace in the event of your death. This will depend on the financial goals you set for yourself and your survivors. Life insurance is an essential part of any healthy financial program. It is essential that you choose what’s right for you and your situation and that you plan accordingly with a licensed professional. This article was prepared by Thrivent Financial for use by North Idaho representative David Forsythe. He has offices at 1420 Lincoln Way in Coeur d’Alene and can also be reached at 208.687.6155.

SANTA IS ON HIS WAY! Special night for Bonners Ferry. By Colin Anderson
AS SOON AS THE TURKEY LEFTOVERS are put away and the football games have ended, thoughts of both young and old start to turn to the next big upcoming holiday. It’s an exciting time for all, and even more so with the annual arrival of Santa and the Christmas tree lighting in downtown Bonners Ferry. It’s been a long-standing tradition in Bonners Ferry for Santa to arrive right after Thanksgiving to light up the Christmas tree and listen to all the Christmas wishes from lots of local children. Santa parks himself at the Georgia Mae Plaza by a once new, now vintage, fire truck, which as rumor would have it is because he’s letting the reindeer stay at the North Pole to rest up for the long haul on

Christmas Eve. It’s because of the work of so many locals and volunteers that this special event continues year after year. Donations such as trees, gifts, candy canes, hot cocoa, decorations, and coordinating with the North Pole to get Santa here and dressed up properly, keep the annual event alive. Santa’s arrival coincides with the Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce’s Hometown Holiday event, which encourages residents to stay local with their holiday purchases. Organized by a committee of Chamber board members that include Alison Henslee, Aimee Stuermer, Wendy

Nearly all the downtown businesses will stay open for extended shopping hours until 6pm Friday night, and many restaurants will be offering affordable deals so families can enjoy a special dinner while they are out on the town. The Chamber is pleased to sponsor and organize the Hometown Holiday event; with some new and many existing businesses open this year, it especially gives credence to the continuing theme of supporting our community and, as always, shopping local.
So here’s the plan. Santa will arrive on Main Street at 4pm on Friday, November 25, and staying until 5:30pm. There will be cookies and hot cocoa as well as a treat for the kids. Young and young at heart can have their

AN ORIGINAL APPROACH It’s all about your lifestyle BY COLIN ANDERSON
WITH ALL THE CHANGES and upheaval in the health insurance market and ever-changing life events, it was time for a new way of providing insurance services. Bradley Insurance has developed a responsive, customer-driven agency model to ensure clients have a good understanding of how to best protect themselves and their loved ones.
Kathleen and Jesse Bradley opened Bradley Insurance in 2013 in Sagle, and in July of 2014, opened the education and service center at its current location in Ponderay. An Idaho native, Kathleen returned to live and work in what she considers, “the best place this country has to offer.” The staff at Bradley Insurance continues to grow as they add professional agents with a passion for helping clients, as well as giving back to the community. The Bonner County Food Bank, Sandpoint Academy of the Arts, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Mystic Farm Wildlife Rescue, Girl Scouts of American, Leadership Sandpoint, Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, Business Networking International and the Adopt-a-Highway program are some of the organizations for which they volunteer their time and support.
At Bradley Insurance the focus is on lifestyle coverage. Unlike homeowner or car insurance that primarily covers property, lifestyle insurance is about people — helping people maintain their lifestyle regardless of health or life changes. Lifestyle products provide financial stability and independence which include coverage for health, life, long-term care, disability, accident, income protection and medicare solutions, to name a few. “Our rapid success in a very saturated market is in part due to our comprehensive look at each client's big picture needs,” explained owner Kathleen Bradley. “Every client has a unique set of circumstances and those circumstances and risk factors determine what coverage and products will best protect them. Every client deserves to have an advisor help them with the complexities and options that can sometimes be overwhelming.”
Looking forward, Bradley Insurance is continually expanding their products and services while building trusted relationships with their clients. As an independent agency, they work for you — providing practical solutions and expert advice while always putting you first.
Bradley Insurance 476653 Hwy 95,Suite 3 Ponderay, ID 83852 208.265.1888
One of the challenges clients face each year are changes to their health insurance plans and Medicare coverage. It's always unsettling to receive those letters saying your current plan is changing or no longer available, your costs are going up and you have a short time frame to figure it all out. According to Bradley, “Our job is to relieve some of the stress and frustration clients experience by guiding them through options, handling the paperwork, meeting the deadlines and, in the end, making sure they are confident with their choices.”

Stay active with unique winter opportunities BY COLIN ANDERSON
THANKSGIVING TYPICALLY MARKS the beginning of winter here in North Idaho. While we are never sure just how intense the season will be, one thing is for certain—we are usually in store for five months of cold, ice and snow. Some choose to burrow in their homes watching TV, reading books and sipping hot coffee with their only experience in the winter elements being a trip to and from the car for work and errands. Others on the opposite spectrum simply can’t get enough of the cold. They move here for six months to operate lifts, teach ski lessons and explore the legendary deep backcountry powder. For most of us, it’s probably somewhere in the middle. We can’t shut down our active bodies and minds for five months, but we aren’t ready to fully suit up and brave the cold each day either. We are weekend skiers and snowboarders, occasional ice skaters, and still take the dog for a walk as long as it’s tolerable. There’s nothing wrong with this, but if you’ve been in the same winter rut for the past few seasons and are looking at trying something different, there are plenty of playgrounds out there to potentially find a new hobby. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Fat Bikes Mountain biking season used to come to an end when the first snow and ice showed up, but thanks to a new design, the season can continue throughout the year. Fat bikes are pretty much what they sound like, mountain bikes adapted with large, heavy-duty tires, capable of navigating ice and snow. The large surface area on the tires creates a stable riding experience. Seasoned riders and cyclists are able to get to places in winter they had never been before. Even if you’ve been on a trail dozens of times in the summer, it looks completely different with the foliage covered by snow.
even take a ride along the frozen beaches of our beautiful lakes. Don’t forget a helmet and layered clothing as you’ll work up a sweat climbing and a chill as you rush downhill.
BONNERS FERRY
There are several popular companies selling fat bikes, and a mid-level model will likely put you over the $1,000 mark. Check with your local bike shop to see if they have rentals available. If they don’t have any for rent, they can usually point you in the right direction. Hit your favorite backcountry trail, snowmobile trail or

Snowmobile Touring Snowmobiles are the perfect way to get far away from it all without having to exert maximum energy. There are more than 400 miles of connected trails around Priest Lake alone, meaning the path you choose will probably lead you to some pretty amazing places of solitude. Over the past couple decades, snowmobile technology has grown leaps and bounds, and newer models are much more responsive, giving more control to the operator. Tours can be arranged through companies like Selkirk Powder in Sandpoint. Guides tailor a route based on your experience and comfort level and how long you would like to be on the trails. Anyone 15 or older can operate a snowmobile on guided trips and children 5 and up can ride as a passenger. Snowmobiling is one of the best ways to see as many places as you can in a day. Advanced riders have the ability to charge up mountain sides and ride powder untouched all season. New riders, however, will want to stick with groomed trails until they get plenty of experience in handling these powerful machines. Be careful, as many who get on the first time end up becoming lifelong riders. Skijourning If that big dog of yours is restless, why not go for a fun run with him doing most of the work. If you’ve attended the Sandpoint or Whitefish Winter Carnival, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the skijourning event where skiers are pulled behind a horse through an obstacle course. This is a variation on the Scandinavian activity as some of the original skijourning was done using dogs as the muscle. All you need is your cross country skis, a harness for yourself and a harness and lead for your dog. Many skijourners find that rock-climbing harnesses work great and give you good control of the excited pup pulling you along. It might take a little encouragement and training while establishing how fast to go, but once you have it dialed in you will be sharing a great outdoor experience with your dog. If your dog is a bit slower paced, skiers can stay in the classic track; if you need to help your dog a bit, run one ski in the classic

With some practice, many who skijourn are able to let the dog do 90 percent of the work and simply balance themselves behind the animal as they are pulled. By the time you’ve circled back to the start, you’ll both have had a happy day and you’ll be even happier with a worn out dog. Winter is here, but don’t worry as there is still plenty to do. There are a dozen incredible mountains all within in a half-day drive, but we also don’t have to go far to experience all the winter adventure we can find. Have you skied for decades but never tried heli-skiing? Make this the winter to finally give it a shot. Instead of watching another movie at home, take the kids on a horsedrawn sleigh ride. The days may be short and the temperature cold, but you’ll forget all about that as you try something new and exciting outside in our winter paradise. Keeping active all winter will help you look and feel better, and you’ll be ready to get back out there this spring when the last of the snow has melted. We can complain about winter all we want, but it’s not going away anytime soon. Get out there and make the best of it. Have fun on your next adventure!

Life Choices Pregnancy Center changing lives By Patty Hutchens
regnancy can be a time of celebration for many, but for others this often joyous occasion can leave one feeling frightened and alone. Women, and often teenagers, are left wondering not only what the next nine months will bring, but how will the rest of their life change no matter what option they choose – parenting, adoption or abortion. For those in North Idaho facing such a crisis, they are blessed to have Life Choices Pregnancy Center. An affiliate of the national organization, Care Net, Life Choices Pregnancy Center offers resources and evidence-based education to empower women when making choices that will change their lives forever. With a team of volunteers and limited staff, they are a Christian-based organization that will walk alongside women in need of help and guidance. Christine Denova is the executive director of Life Choices. Supporting her are part-time employees who include a client services director, an education coordinator, a bookkeeper and two Registered Nurses. There are also a number of volunteers who go through extensive training, including one to two months of shadowing current employees and volunteers. Much of what takes place at Life Choices involves making sure the clients have all the material they need to make an informed choice when facing an unplanned pregnancy.
Photos by Lisa Turner.
“We equip them for parenting and for life. It’s not a handout but a hand-up,” said Denova. The mission of Life Choices Pregnancy Center is not to convince a woman who is faced with an unplanned pregnancy what she should or should not do, but rather to provide them with the truth and all the facts so that they can make their own well-informed decision. “We share the evidence-based material that comes with each decision,” said Denova. Part of that information is given through free ultrasounds that are not only performed at the Center, but also in the community at places such as Clark Fork and Priest River. The traveling ultrasound will soon begin to visit Bonners Ferry to further Life Choices Pregnancy Center’s

outreach. Allowing a mother and father visual information on how their baby is developing can have a significant impact on their decision. “Statistics show that when a woman who is pregnant can see her baby, with arms, legs, eyes, nose ears, etc. they actually are less likely to have an abortion,” said Denova. The staff and volunteers also provide clients with replicas of babies at various stages of development, and they are true to the actual weight as well. “We show them as early as seven weeks,” said Denova who goes on to say that at that young stage, the baby already has a mouth and tongue, the muscle system is forming and there are 100,000 new brain cells forming every minute. Life Choices Pregnancy Center not only provides support for unplanned pregnancies, it also provides support for women who have suffered a miscarriage or who have chosen the path of abortion; spiritual healing is just one of many of the services they offer. For a woman who has chosen an abortion, the decision can have lifelong effects. “Initially, a lot of women feel relief (after an abortion), but many later on will experience emotional stress. Some have suicidal thoughts, others become depressed or turn to a life of addiction,” said Denova. “We love our clients
and walk beside them all along the way no matter what path they choose. We do not judge anyone.” Part of the support they provide is postabortion healing through a program they call Mourning Hope, an eight-week Bible study that walks the women through a process of forgiveness. “For women who go through the program, the transformation is miraculous,” shared Denova with tears filling her eyes. “They become more and more like a blossoming flower.” One may be surprised to know that Life Choices Pregnancy Center has been in Sandpoint since the 1980s when it began in the lobby of a church with a phone hotline. As the need for its services has grown, so has the support. Life Choices received its nonprofit status in 2002 and operates strictly on private donations from churches, businesses and individuals. “This community is so generous,” said Denova gratefully. Part of the focus at Life Choices Pregnancy Center is pregnancy prevention. In addition to providing education to both adult men and

women, they also visit Sandpoint High School health classes and want to eventually also visit Sandpoint Middle School as well as Hope and Clark Fork. “We discuss healthy boundaries, healthy relationships and healthy choices,” said Denova of the information provided to the students. The Center sees an average of 36 clients each month, but the numbers can be as great as 45. “And those numbers include the baby. We always include the baby,” said Denova. Recognizing that these decisions include more than just a mother, Life Choices Pregnancy Center has a group of male volunteers who are launching a male mentoring program. The Center is open Mondays through Thursdays from noon to 4pm, and while they allow for walk-ins, they prefer people to make appointments. If there is one thing that Denova wants people to know is that people from all walks of life go through their doors – teenagers to people in their 40s; some have addiction issues, some don’t; some are Christians, some are not; and some have chosen to have sex while others became pregnant through sexual assault.
There are miracles happening all the time right here in North Idaho at Life Choices Pregnancy Center. Just this year they have had two women who chose life for their child through adoption, two others who have come to know Jesus and two others who have recommitted their lives to Jesus. “And we have had several women change their original plan of abortion to parenting,” said Denova. In addition, seven women have gone through the Mourning Hope program finding forgiveness and hope and setting some of them free from not just shame and guilt but from things such as addiction. Recognizing the difficulty the holidays can bring for their clients, Life Choices Pregnancy Center hosts the Tree of Blessing each December, an opportunity to provide their clients with gifts to help ease the financial strain of the holidays and to celebrate the presence of Jesus in their lives. “We ask the clients for a list of their needs, including things like clothing, boots, and coats,” shared Denova who adds that they feed them, encourage them, love them and pray with them during this special gathering. Denova said all of this could not be accomplished without the work of many people. “The volunteers here are the heroes of this ministry,” said Denova. “The community of churches and individuals who support us are the ones who make this possible. Without them we would not exist.” Those at Life Choices are grateful for the opportunity to offer their clients the love of Jesus.

We see the hard stuff, but we also see God’s miracles on a daily basis.” For information on Life Choices Pregnancy Center, visit their website at lifechoicespc.org or call them at 208.263.7621. Healthy Holiday Meal Planning
Making your family dinner a success. By Edna Eby MS RD LD, Dietitian, Diabetes Outreach, Boundary Community Hospital IT’S NOVEMBER AND YOU ARE PLANNING the annual holiday family dinner. Everyone loves Grandma’s famous southern sweet potato casserole and Aunt Louise’s pumpkin pie with plenty of whipped cream. But Uncle Bill and cousin Ann are coming to dinner too. Bill has diabetes and Ann has heart disease. Your daughter Emily is trying to get everyone to eat healthier. What to do? A little planning goes a long way to make your family dinner a success.
Here are some tips to make the holidays healthier: • First, set a definite time to serve the meal. A diabetic can plan ahead and adjust meal and medication times according to when the meal is to be served. A two-hour delay can cause problems; normal or routine meal times are the best choice. • Plan a variety of healthy choices. A fresh veggie tray is a good choice with a ranch, salsa or hummus dip. Ordinary foods without adding dressings or sauces are best.

• Herbs and spices are a must! Get creative and remember, salt is a personal choice – less is better. Most recipes can be modified to lower the carbohydrate level. Cranberry gelatin salad can be made with sugar free gelatin, have guests add their own whip topping and bet how many will guess this salad is not only delicious but healthy as well! Prepare candied yams with a brown sugar substitute or serve two types of potatoes: candied yams and mashed potatoes. The amount of sugar can be reduced in most recipes, then add herbs and spices for a great taste. • Have a variety of beverage choices including ice water, sugar free punch or soda and coffee. Although not recommended for diabetics, alcohol is a personal choice. If a diabetic does elect to drink, make sure that food is available to prevent hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. • Desserts – Yikes!! Always a temptation. A diabetic diet controls all carbohydrates. Carbohydrates found in gooey desserts can raise blood sugars very fast and high. Offer low sugar desserts. A single crust pie or a custard without the crust are better choices than double crust pies. If the diabetic offers to bring something for the meal, have them bring the dessert.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. As of 2012 approximately 21.1 million Americans (9 percent) had diabetes and today, one in three people are undiagnosed. Some diabetes signs or symptoms are: • Extreme thirst • Frequent urination • Fatigue Diabetes does not discriminate; it can affect any age, sex or racial group. It can cause many complications or morbid conditions. Remember that holiday meals are a time for family and traditions. Offer choices; it is up to the diabetic to make the right decision. If they want to eat a small piece of dessert, it is their choice. Just be sure that healthy options are available. The Boundary County Diabetes Education Support Group meets the second Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm at the Panhandle Health Building Meeting Room in Bonners Ferry. ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH? BY SUSAN MOORE
STRENGTH ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH? It seems like a loaded question likely motivated by dogmatic beliefs that everyone needs to be as strong as humanly possible in order to have any sort of quality of life, especially since this is written by a strength coach. But really, what is strong enough? Here’s the real question. Is there anything that you need or want to do that is being hindered by a requisite strength that you do not currently possess? Are you lacking independence in any part of your life? If your car got a flat tire, would you require assistance? If you answered “no” to all of these questions then you may actually be strong enough for daily life. That doesn’t mean that you couldn’t benefit from additional strength, it only means you possess at least the minimal amount of strength to survive in our modern society.
How does one get strong enough? It can be a lifelong journey, but it has to start somewhere.
If by chance you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you my friend, are not strong enough. Unless there are circumstances beyond our control then just about all of us, no matter our age, size or gender should be able to obtain a certain level of independence (small children not included). If you have fallen into a sedentary trap, now is the time to do something about it. You are either improving or declining in strength at any point in your life, but you are never doing both at the same time. If you spend 99 percent of your time seated you are getting weaker by the second. If you are 80 years old and sitting all day, most
of your weakness isn’t because you are older, it’s because you don’t move and are starting to atrophy. In order to be strong enough, we need to keep moving. Getting strong doesn’t have to be difficult. I met a man once who was installing a fence in my backyard. He looked strong but was concerned that his 10 to 12-hour a day job and family responsibilities kept him from having the time and energy to get to the gym. His job consisted of digging large holes, mixing and pouring concrete, loading and unloading heavy pieces of different kind of fencing and other laborious tasks. My advice to him? Don’t go to the gym. We go to the gym because our daily actions, jobs and or habits are not strength-building and maintaining. His were. He had no need for training to improve his strength. But do you? Do you have a job that requires strength in pulling, pushing, bracing, creating and controlling power through and against rotation and loaded carries? How does one get strong enough? It can be a lifelong journey, but it has to start somewhere. You need to challenge yourself in some way every day. I always recommend a qualified professional to help you in your process. Notice I said qualified. You want a subject matter expert in their field. Find something that is skill developing. Usually I try not to steer people away from any kind of workout program but we are talking about strength training here, not cardio. You cannot dance your way strong. You want to lift heavier things so it trains you to have the ability to lift objects and yourself when needed in life. Make sure you lift in a program that is safe. You shouldn’t be risking injury and if it hurts, you aren’t doing it right. I’m not a believer in “no pain no gain.” I subscribe to the philosophy of “no pain equals no pain.” Just because you

saw something in a video doesn’t mean you are doing the movement like the person in the video. If you want to be good, get a coach. You know Russell Wilson has a strength coach and he has access to the same videos you do. Our country is inherently lazy. Not everyone and maybe not even you but for the most part, our society is always looking for everything to be convenient, ready-made and at our fingertips. Strength training takes a certain amount of dedication. We are talking about dedicating 4 percent of your day. If you have time to watch your favorite shows, play weird jeweled games on your smartphone or spend time everyday on Facebook, you have time for this. If it’s important to you you will find the time. Strong enough is doable. Strong enough is important. Strong enough will, without a doubt, extend your life and the quality of it.

A look into the life of a police officer’s family By Lindsay Murray

Few of us ever have to hold the only thing that could stand between a human heart and a bullet. It seems so thin, but it is so heavy. It’s heavy both physically and emotionally.
T
wo weeks ago, I went into our closet to pull out the pieces of my husband’s police uniform in order to make sure that everything was ironed and ready and that all of the components were there so that he could work his paid duty that evening. If you aren’t familiar with what paid duties are, they are extra shifts that we have counted on to pay for Christmas gifts and car repairs. We are blessed that my husband has the opportunity to pick up paid duties for the extra money that sometimes we are desperate for. I stay home and homeschool our four kids, and every penny is needed. On this day, my husband had already worked his normal shift as a detective in the fraud branch of our fairly large police service. He had to pop home in between shifts for a quick dinner and kisses and snuggles with the kids before going in to work another eight-hour shift on very little sleep. This story is told hundreds of times, every single day by police families. The rushed eating, the kids crying about not seeing Daddy enough that day, the wife doing the bedtime routine alone again. Let me just say right now that this story is from my point of view so it is going to be about a husband and a father. I know wonderful female police officers who kiss their kids and husbands goodbye, who nurse their babies after a long night shift, who squeeze their growing bellies into their uniforms, trying to protect the new life growing there from the kicks of big bad men that are resisting arrest. I cannot even begin to imagine what it’s like to go to a priority call in the early stages

of pregnancy. I cannot imagine working nights at eight months pregnant. I can’t imagine, with my mothering heart, holding a baby that has passed away. Our first responders, both male and female, along with doctors and nurses face the horrors on a daily basis that most of us turn away from. I stand behind them and support them with all that I am, but this piece isn’t about them. It is about my guy, the father of my kids. I am writing about the man who has never once turned down a tickle fight with his kids even after the longest, most agonizing day. The man who, instead of being crushed by yet another sudden death, comes home and holds me and focuses on what we have to be thankful for instead of letting the darkness grab hold. So there I was, standing in our closet, looking at a sea of blue uniforms, and I pulled out his bulletproof vest and I held it. Have you ever held your husband’s bulletproof vest? Few of us ever have to hold the only thing that could stand between a human heart and a bullet. It seems so thin, but it is so heavy. It’s heavy both physically and emotionally. I see his name, stitched over and to the left of his heart. When he was first hired, their names were on pins, but realizing that they could be injured by the sharp pin, the decision was made to move to the embroidered style of nametag. I see our last name, the name I took on the day that we spoke our vows – for better and for worse, in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, ‘til death do us part. I see the name that our children carry. I find his black, police issued pens everywhere. I pull them out of all of the pockets. I find his forage cap (police uniform hat), and our toddler
grabs it and runs around with it on her head. I pull out a black T-shirt from the large stack in his drawer and find black socks and make sure that he is dressed appropriately for the weather; it seems like he is always standing out in heavy rain, a blizzard or a heat wave. Have you felt how heavy those boots are? My kids slip their little feet into Daddy’s boots. Boots that have cut into his skin after standing at large festivals for eight hours straight. His eyes scan the crowd the entire time, on high alert, looking for drugs, weapons and suspicious activity. People come up to him and say things like, “Boy, you sure have an easy shift tonight.” He smiles past them, politely answers while never once breaking his moving gaze from the crowd that he is protecting. Boots that he has had to run in, through dark backyards while hopping fences, chasing boys 20 years younger. When was the last time that you hopped fences while the world slept? Obviously, we knew what we were getting into when he first applied to be a police officer. Back then we only had one baby, and I found comfort in the fact that if our babies lost their Daddy, he would be a hero. Just like with most things in life, we had no idea what it would actually feel like until we were living it. I feel like at this point, I need again to point out how dangerous the world is for so many people, but there isn’t enough time to do that in detail. I know there is pain everywhere. His uniform is pulled together now and his dinner is hot and ready. My husband is jumped on by four jubilant kids as he enters the door from work. He is dressed so nicely in his suit. He is in his second year as a detective, and my worry has been massively eased, knowing that he is mostly working in a safe office now. But we had many years of patrol, and he will end
up back on the road in a couple of years. But for now, he’s safe in his tie and shiny shoes. He’s home on time and has a normal schedule after 14 years of crazy schedules between the two of us. We chat as he stands at the counter and eats quickly. He listens enthusiastically to the kids’ stories of new Minecraft worlds and what birds visited our bird feeder today. I take his plate to the sink, and he goes upstairs to get his uniform on. Layer upon layer, he is transformed into someone who is either a beacon of hope or someone to be feared and hated by others. I wish that both sides could see him, chatting cheerfully with me about his day, while buttoning up his shirt. I wish they could see the man behind the blue. The man that I will worry about until I hear his key in the front door while our kids sleep. The worrying doesn’t go away with time. I will never get used to a text that reads, “I’m going to be late, we had a gun call.” I cannot tell you how many times I have paced in front of our windows, watching the roads become slick with ice, knowing that it’s three in the morning and that the salt trucks aren’t out in force yet. And while the cruisers have snow tires on, we can’t afford them on our family car so he will be driving home over dark roads in the middle of the night, exhausted. I often wake up out of a dead sleep and reach immediately for my phone to see if he has texted. Is he going to be late again? Yes, every shift is busy now. The world is very different than it was nearly a decade ago when he was first hired. I am sitting on our bed and am taken aback by how handsome he looks in his uniform. I still wonder how I got so lucky! We have 20 minutes left as a family before his second shift of the day starts. He could spend that time checking Facebook, but instead he kneels beside me and our four kids on the floor I wish they could see the man behind the blue. and he chooses to pray our nightly rosary with us. This man, who is about to face the evils that we are praying against, is humbled, on his knees. I steal glances at him, deep in prayer, and I can never understand what could possibly be going through his head before stepping out into the night to be the one who protects the innocent while they sleep. Our 7-yearold son leads us in the St. Michael prayer, the patron saint of police officers, and I ask my reluctant husband if he could just sit with the kids for a quick photo on the couch because these days they rarely see him in uniform so I want to have a photo. He doesn’t know that I call this photo, “the last photo.” He doesn’t know that I have a collection, spanning nearly a decade, of “last photos” … just in case. There is only a small percentage of spouses out there that seriously have to say goodbye with their whole heart when their partner leaves for work. Do you know how it feels to discuss increasing his life insurance because the climate of the world is anti-police right
now, and I can’t afford to raise four kids on my own with our measly savings. The brutal truth is that I take this last photo so that I have an up-to-date photo in case the media needs it, in case he dies. This last time I didn’t have the chance to get the kids out of their dinner-stained pajamas so I edited it to be black and white so you don’t see the tomato sauce and peanut butter. He doesn’t know that my heart trembles while I take the photo; he looks so happy with his kids in his arms, and they look so safe wrapped under him. But all I can think about is “what if this is the last photo”… Grim? Macabre? Maybe. But I don’t care. What if it is the last photo? I would be so thankful that I took it. I would be so thankful that he spent those 20 minutes before leaving, on his knees in prayer with his family. I would be so thankful for those stolen glances at his perfect profile speaking the words, “…deliver us from evil…”
Respect. Honor. Remember. • According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, in spite of the danger and risk involved with law enforcement, there are currently more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers serving in the United States. This figure is the highest ever. Twelve percent of these officers are women. We are blessed that more and more people are choosing to go into this line of work and offer protection to our communities.
The worrying doesn’t go away with time. I will never get used to a text that reads, “I’m going to be late, we had a gun call.” Photo courtesy Lindsay Murray.
• Support can be given to our law enforcement officers through may ways, but one way in which everyone can participate is through the Adopt-A-Cop program. The program’s goal is assign an officer to a specific family, group or individual who will pray each day for the safety of their assigned officer. They can also send notes of encouragement to their assigned officer. It is a wonderful way to provide support on a daily basis.

• While the hope is that none of our officers will ever have to sacrifice their lives, the reality is that officers do make the ultimate sacrifice every day. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is one way to honor those who have fallen in the line of duty. Their mission is accomplished through the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. and includes programs such as Officer of the Month and Officer Roll Call. • Social media is used by almost everyone in today’s world. And it is also another way to lend support to the men and women in blue. There are Facebook pages that you can join and learn about the difference law enforcement officers are making in the lives of others and offer support when those who serve and protect need it most. One such page is Stand Up America and Support Our Police. Check it out and offer your support.

I was talking with a friend about this “last photo,” and she asked me to write this. She suggested that I ask all police spouses to share their own version of “the last photo,” to create a movement, to see the person behind the badge. Can you share this and ask those you know who are married to police officers if they are “OK”? Can you see if they need help when they are alone for the seventh evening in a row putting kids to sleep? Can you send them a message when the media reports another horrific police death because let me tell you, we all bleed blue and cry for those who have fallen because they are one of our own. I see my tears on their wives’ faces and my children standing beside the casket.
My heart aches for all of the mothers who are tucking their kids into bed alone tonight. This isn’t us versus them. This isn’t my pain versus yours.
because the family waiting at home often keeps these things locked up at home because we have heard it all before and have learned to grow a thick skin. I don’t want to become a jaded police wife. We aren’t those people. My heart cries out for justice for ALL the victims and fatherless and motherless families. My heart aches for all of the mothers who are tucking their kids into bed alone tonight. This isn’t us versus them. This isn’t my pain versus yours. I just wanted to let you know that when you see a photo of my husband and kids on one of my social media accounts, what you didn’t know is that while I was taking it, I was hoping and praying that this photo would not become the last photo.
I wish that I never had to write this, but I am so thankful that I have this opportunity to open up about my deepest fear

Recycle Recycling goods and materials reduces waste by reusing items that might otherwise end up in a landfill. While it varies community to community, glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, cartons and aluminum can all be easily recycled. If your community doesn’t offer recycling pick up, store your old bottles and cans and bring them with you on the next visit to someplace that does. Many places will pay for your recycling, especially if you make it to Oregon where you will get five cents for each glass or plastic bottle you bring in. Not ready to haul that much? Try reusing old bottles as flower vases or funky string lights; each time you reuse or recycle you’re keeping more out of our landfills.
The vast majority of community organizations and nonprofits would not exist in this country without the help and dedication of passionate volunteers. The fun part of volunteering is getting to choose a worthy organization about which you feel passionate and to which you can provide the most help. This can be anything from tutoring children after school, cooking meals in the church basement, organizing a community event, mentoring, transporting patients and so much more. When you give a little of yourself to help others, you are not only helping to better your community but the satisfaction you receive on a personal level can go a long way to make you a happier and healthier person.

Community gardens are sprouting up all over the country as neighborhoods see the benefit of carving out some green space. Neighbors come together to plant herbs, vegetables, flowers and fruit. The garden is taken care of by all, and all who support it get to reap the benefits of fresh produce. A community garden is another great way to teach kids about sharing, responsibility and working with others. Talk with your neighborhood this winter so you’re ready to get planting when the spring comes around again.

Mentor or Tutor Children’s view of the world is shaped at a very young age, and having a positive adult influence in their lives can help them make more positive choices down the road. It’s never a child’s fault if they are brought up in a broken home, and they are often the ones in need of the most emotional support during crisis situations. Help with homework, taking them to the park so a single parent can go to work, or passing on your knowledge of music, cars or sports can have a huge impact in their lives.

Most of us can think back on childhood and remember a coach or team that had a great impact on our lives. Maybe the team didn’t go undefeated, but you learned valuable lessons about accepting defeat, perseverance, sportsmanship, dedication, adversity, leadership and working as a team, many lessons we apply later on in life in our work and family lives. Coaching allows you to pass these lessons on to the next generation. We don’t all grow up to be professional athletes, but ask most kids who played sports and they’ll tell you they learned just about as many life skills on the field as in the classroom, and they have good coaches to thank for it.

Utah Zion National Park Make your way through long winding roads and tunnels of Zion National Park’s red rocks to the Zion Narrows where you can hike the Virgin River, admire the other worldliness of the natural hanging gardens lush in comparison to the surrounding desert and sandstone cliffs. Hike the native and pioneer trails or drive the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Check weather conditions ahead of your visit though as the park is prone to extreme weather conditions, in particular the extreme heat experienced there as well as flash floods during rainstorms. With preparation though, you can’t go wrong in visiting this park as one of our country’s natural wonders.

Iceland n e v a e H o t y a w r i a t S
Iceland is referred to as a “country of contrasts.” It’s home to the northern lights, volcanoes, breath-taking waterscapes and massive glaciers. The country is divided into four regions. The East holds much vegetation and has many fishing villages and harbors. It also has “magma chambers” full of mineral deposits. There are mountains to the North as well as lava fields. Here, the sun never sets in the summer and visitors can play a game of golf at midnight if they wish. The South is famous for their seafood, waterfalls and glaciers, and the Highlands are relatively untouched because of accessibility and are known for their hot springs. A good place to start your exploration is in Reykjavík, and don’t visit without planning ahead. A little known online visitor’s fact is that Iceland is also known as a land of books, claiming more books published per capita.

Fjords & Hills It is known as the Land of the Vikings with a midnight summer sun and a winter that is a perpetual night. Norway’s drastic seasons give us a surreal spin to what we’re accustomed. In the summer, name the summer sport and you can do it at any time of day as the sun never sets. In the winter, it’s not completely dark either as impressive auroras light the sky. Past visitors recommend making the summit to “The Pulpit,” a massive rock table in Ryfylke. Hike to the top and drink in the gorgeous view of the fjords and rock formations. Or visit the ancient glaciers still present from the ice ages in the west. To take a break from the outdoors, visit the chic museums and cafes in Oslo. Norway abounds in scenery to experience and definitely requires repeat visits.
Canada
Athabasca Falls Plan your trek to this Canadian wonder of Jasper National Park. There’s no outdoor activity you can’t do here from camping in the summer to sleigh riding in the winter. The falls are 75 feet high and nearly 60 feet wide. In the summer months, the Athabasca River flows white with “rock flour” which is the fine silt of mountain remains released as the glacier melts. In the winter, the river takes on an icy blue hue from infinitesimal pieces of rock reflecting blue or green. The park has protected and accessible walkways. Visitors are strongly cautioned to respect the majesty by staying on these trails for safety.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
RELAX REJUVENATE By Jesse Wurm
In some of the best hot springs in the Inland Northwest When the gray weather of fall and winter sets in, there’s nothing I enjoy more than getting away for the day or the weekend and soaking away muscle aches and stress in a hot spring. The healing powers of hot springs have drawn soakers for thousands of years and are widely accepted overseas as treatment options for various ailments. During a hot spring bath, the body absorbs trace amounts of minerals in the water, which can include carbon dioxide, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, chloride, iron, potassium and lithium. These minerals help to provide healing effects to different organs and systems in the body. The hot water can also boost blood circulation and increase blood oxygen flow, it reduces stress and anxiety, promotes sleep and relaxes tense muscles. Studies have also shown that your skin will absorb minerals, which can help to relieve certain skin conditions, such as dry, rough skin, eczema and psoriasis symptoms. Typically, hot springs temperatures can vary from 95°F to well over 115°F. Some places will even provide a cooling pool to bring your body’s temperature back down. The heat of the water is what helps to relieve pain, and the buoyancy created by the mineral content can create a floating feeling, relieving pressures on joints and muscles. If you suffer from chronic lower back pain or

arthritis, the hot springs are for you. It’s always good to keep in mind that since you’re immersing yourself in hot water your body will need to sweat. Drinking water before you soak and after will help keep you hydrated. I typically go to the hot springs with a large water bottle, which holds 1.5 liters of water. Drinks like coconut water with electrolytes are also a great option. Soaking can help your metabolism and increase your appetite; you’ll want to have some food on hand for a little post-soak snack. When I’m headed out, I usually take a bag with the following: a towel, bathing suit, water bottle (or two), flip flops, snacks (jerky, apples, nuts or granola) and a robe or cover up.
There are facilities to stay on site, with rooms ranging from affordable doubles, to premier luxury suites with lake views. Prices will vary from weekdays, weekends and peak season (July 1 to Sept. 30 and Dec. 20 to Jan. 2); be sure to make a reservation on their website before making the drive: www. ainsworthhotsprings.com. Hume Hotel & Spa, Nelson, B.C., Canada:
The benefits to soaking in hot springs are endless and can only be increased with habitual use. The next time you need to ward off the gloomy blues, soak away some aches and pains, or get out of town for the weekend, head to one of these nearby locations.
If you’re looking for a different experience, don’t overlook staying in nearby Nelson, about 29 miles south on BC 31. The fully restored 1898 Hume Hotel & Spa in downtown Nelson is the place to be. The full service hotel features 45 rooms, the General Store Restaurant, the Library Lounge, Mike’s Place Pub, Aura Spa and Salon and Spiritbar as well as banquet and convention services all under one roof. Plus, all overnight guests are treated to a complimentary hot breakfast in the morning. Reservations can be made on their website: humehotel.com.
Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort, B.C., Canada:
Symes Hot Springs Hotel and Mineral Baths, Hot Springs, Montana:
Passports are required for this destination, but trust me when I say it’s well worth the drive and brief stint with border patrol. Nestled in the Kootenay mountain range, the hot springs at Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort have been healing visitors for hundreds of years. The springs originate around the geothermal Cody Caves, (which yes, you can soak in) with water flowing down through fractures in the rock.
Nestled in the rolling hills of northwestern Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation and just a 2.5-hour drive from Sandpoint is Symes Hot Springs Hotel which offers affordable soaks and big sky views. The recently restored hotel has a long tradition of hot water baths and comfortable lodgings; you can still enjoy a soak in a claw-footed bathtub that has been in use since 1928.
There are three pools available: the 27,000 gallon pool with temperatures from 98100; the caves with 18,000 gallons of water, temperatures ranging from 104°F to 110°F; and the 500-gallon cold plunge, fed by the nearby Munn Creek, whose temperature varies by season. The soaking pools are open every day from 10am to 9pm and bathing suits are required. Day passes are available for around $12 per adult and $9.50 per child (or $38.00 for a family, two adults/two children ages 3 to 12), but you’ll want to stay the night and enjoy the views of Kootenay Lake and the Purcell Mountain Range.
Natural mineral water flows out of an artesian well at 108°F and is piped directly to the outdoor tubs then heated as needed for indoor soaking tubs. Symes offers four individual soaking tubs in a co-ed bathhouse, an outdoor octagon pool with water temperatures of 102°F to 104°F which spills into a lower twenty foot square pool and then flows into a larger swimming pool kept cool for warmer days. Bathing suits are required for all public areas and day soaks will run you about $7 for adults, and $4.50 for kids 12 and under. The resort also offers punch cards with 10 soaks for $50. The hotel has 31 rooms; 10 with mineral water baths and shower rooms to rinse off.

Symes Hot Springs Hotel also has an antique shop, espresso bar, small conference room and full-service restaurant. They offer some great deals this time of year, keep an eye on their website for couples getaways and package deals: symeshotsprings.com. If you’re just making the day trip, there are gas stations in Plains, as well as at the corner of the turn off (Hwy 77) and Highway 28. My favorite health food market, Camas Organic Market, is located in town on the corner of Main St. and Wall St. They have wonderful organic options like fresh baked bread, buffalo jerky, local produce and other treats for the trek home. Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort, Paradise, Montana: Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort is located in the beautiful Paradise Valley of Montana, along the banks of the Clarks branch of the Flathead River. Natural mineral waters flow out of a spring at 118°F, supplying two hot tubs, four soaking pools and a swimming pool. The hot water is mixed with cool water and used to fill two modern tubs on the grassy area. The pools are drained and refilled after each use and bathing suits are required. Non-lodger pool use is restricted to four three-hour sessions from 9am to 9pm to prevent overcrowding. Soaking fees are $10 per person Monday through Thursday, and $12 per person Friday through Sunday. Quinn’s also has a punch card deal, offering 10 soaks for $70. The resort offers a variety of private cabins and lodge rooms, all non-smoking and equipped with private baths. The Harwood House restaurant is a local favorite, serving three meals a day, and their house specialty prime rib is something I’ll never forget. The onsite bar, Quinn’s Tavern, is great for a nightcap and has live music every weekend. You can view the daily menu, or make a reservation on their website: quinnshotsprings.com.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY November 26 By Melody Vanhorn
A GREAT DAY TO SHOP LOCAL and support our downtown businesses. Founded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is a day to celebrate the small businesses that help support local neighborhoods and takes place every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Small Business Saturday has been embraced as part of the holiday shopping tradition as each year shoppers come together to “Shop Small and show their neighborhood pride. In 2015 alone, over 95 million people went out to participate in Small Business Saturday. In Bonners Ferry, we celebrate our great diversity in small businesses that drive our local economy. When you choose to shop small, you are supporting ballet lessons, the local schools, baseball games, sports endeavors, and building our local community. You make a choice with your dollars and 95 million people can't be wrong! Make a statement on November 26 and say hello to your local small business owner. They'll be waiting.
