PUBLISHER Celebrating Veterans and Our Freedom We Set the Standard!

THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATED VETERANS DAY—a day set aside to honor all those who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy as a country. Laying down your life for your country is one of the ultimate sacrifices, and although we acknowledge those sacrifices each November 11, it is something we should make a conscious effort to do all throughout the year. The younger generation only hears stories of what it meant to be drafted into the military; young men anxiously waiting to see if their number came up. Would they be going off to college or to war? It was an uncertain time. We at Living Local are so grateful for the freedom we have and for those who have fought for the rights we now have. Our freedom is something we should never take for granted. As journalists and a company that is independently owned, we are grateful for the opportunity to be able to write and report without censorship. And while it is simply a coincidence that Veterans Day falls close to Thanksgiving, it also offers time to reflect on all the blessings we have—many of which would not be possible without the sacrifices of our veterans. As you go through the month of November, take time to express thanks to those who have served in the military to protect and defend our great country. Do you know someone who has lost a loved one in the war? Reach out to them and extend a heartfelt thank you. To all those who have served or are currently serving, we at Living Local say, “Thank you, and God bless you.”

enrollment dates are from November 1 to December 4. Applications are available on the Care-N-Share program’s Facebook page or by stopping in at the Bamboo Craft room, located north of Three Mile at 35 Automation Lane. ONE OF THE MANY blessings of living in Boundary County is that the theme of neighbors helping neighbors amps up during the holiday season; many people work hard and give generously to ensure that no matter what the situation, anyone needing assistance isn’t left empty handed. The Care-N-Share program began 35 years ago when local resident, Linda Lederhos, was working for Panhandle Health. “Zion Bank had a toy-making contest, and when it was over they asked if any of my WIC clients could use the extra toys,” Linda shares. The contest lasted two years, and once it had ended, Linda turned to her friends. “There was an ongoing need, so I called some of my girlfriends and asked if they had any gently used toys that we could refurbish and pass on to people who needed them.” From that beginning, Care-N-Share has grown into a steady stream of toys, clothes and money donations from many generous people. And all of these donations have been passed along to thousands of local children. “Our community is just wonderful when it comes to helping people in need!” Linda says. Donations may be dropped off at the Bamboo Craft Room, Mountain West and Wells Fargo banks, and the Boundary County Courthouse. For those needing assistance, Care-N-Share

Anyone who misses the Care-N-Share enrollment can sign up for the Christmas Tree of Joy program; applications will be accepted December 4 through 15, with gift dispersal on December 22. Joy Schmitz, owner of the local Verizon Wireless, started this outreach two years ago after learning that the gap between the Care-N-Share deadline and Christmas was still leaving some families in need. “I felt terrible because some kids weren’t going to be getting presents, and that wasn’t OK with me!” Joy sets up a tree in her store, decorated with paper “ornaments” that have information about each child, along with what they’d like from Santa. Community members are invited to take as many tags as they’d like, purchase and wrap the indicated gifts, then return them to the Verizon store with the tags attached. This effort brought Christmas to more than 40 children the first year and more than 100 children the next. And after seeing a desire among the children to give in return, Joy put together a workshop last year for them to pick out a present or two so they had something to put under the tree for

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

their parents. Children were asked to bring five or 10 cans of food to earn one or two tickets to the workshop. Local businesses donated gifts or money for gifts; Joy reports that the event turned out to be a really fun time for the children who attended. “The best part was watching the kids wrap their presents and seeing how happy they were to leave with something to give to their parents,” she says. Local realtors from the Selkirk Association of Realtors participate in the annual Giving Tree Program which works with children’s advocacy programs such as the Bonners Ferry Head Start to help supply local families with gifts and much needed items during the holiday season. Larson’s has served as the location for the Giving Tree for several years now. “Applications are sent to the Selkirk Association of Realtors’ main office in Sandpoint, but then tags are filled out and brought back up for the tree here” said Kirsten Madden of Century 21 Realty, “and those tags are for local families only. All gifts and other items collected in Bonners Ferry go to Boundary County families.” Members of the community can help with this program also by choosing tags from the tree, located near the rear entrance at Larson’s, purchasing the gifts and returning them to the store. Realtors from both Boundary and Bonner Counties work together to deliver the items to referring agencies who then give them out to the families. For questions or more details, contact the Selkirk Association of Realtors' office at 208.265.2227. To participate in this year’s workshop, food donations can be brought to the Verizon Store until December 8, with the workshop tentatively set for December 16; date and location of the workshop will be printed on the tickets. If anyone would like to donate gifts or money for this event or the Christmas Tree of Joy, please contact Joy at 208.267.7100.

The Boundary Community Hospital has again invited the BoCo Backpacks program to decorate this year’s Tree of Care as a fundraiser for the group. BoCo Backpacks provides food kits to local Head Start, elementary and middle school children who don’t have adequate meal resources during the weekend. The Tree of Care is set up in BCH’s outpatient waiting room downstairs and will feature ornaments decorated by local fifth-grade students. The ornaments may be purchased for $5 each at the hospital; the BoCo Backpack ladies will also have a table at the Holiday Craft Fair at the fairgrounds on December 1 and 2. All funds go toward putting together nutritious food kits that are given weekly to the program’s enrolled children.

NOW AT OUR NEW LOCATION! Experienced Dental Care for the Entire Family

From that beginning, Care-N-Share has grown into a steady stream of toys, clothes and money donations from many generous people. BoCo Backpacks chair, Shirley Anderson, shared a statistic that one in every six children in North Idaho’s school food programs don’t have adequate nourishment for the threeday weekends; this group works very hard to ensure that children who fall into that statistic in Boundary County are well taken care of. “We give out a tremendous amount of food … and have received tremendous support from the community for the BoCo Backpack program,” states Shirley, citing generous support from many local groups and businesses. Due to increased enrollments this year, donations are not keeping pace, and even with grants that provide most of their annual budget, the program is facing a shortfall. Anyone wishing to donate is encouraged to call Shirley at 208.255.9847.

Practical Living

ESSENTIALS This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Kevin Callos.

FINANCIAL FOCUS

DURING HOLIDAYS, BE EXTRA VIGILANT ABOUT PROTECTING FINANCIAL DATA

TO HELP ACHIEVE your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you should save and invest regularly. But that’s only part of the picture. You also need to protect your financial assets in various ways. One such method is guarding your personal information—especially any information that could be linked to your financial accounts. It’s obviously important to be vigilant at any time, but you need to be even more on your toes during the holiday season, when fraudsters are particularly active. So, to help keep your important data under wraps during the holidays, consider these suggestions: • Extend your protection to all mobile devices. Identity thieves can now compromise your mobile devices by installing spyware that steals usernames, passwords and credit card information. Fortunately, you can fight back. By doing a little research online, you can find the best mobile security software for your needs.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

You’ve Spent a Lifetime Preparing for Retirement.

Now What? KEEP IT TO

• Use multiple passwords. Online security specialists recommend that you use different passwords for each new online shopping site you visit during the holiday season. Although this might seem like a hassle, it can be helpful, because even if identity thieves were to grab one of your new passwords, they still couldn’t use it for other sites you may visit. And you can even find a free online program that can help you keep track of all your passwords. • Be suspicious of “huge savings.” It happens every holiday season—identity thieves develop fake sites with attractive graphics and stunningly low prices on a variety of items, especially digital devices. If you fall for these pitches, you won’t get any merchandise, but you might get a handful of headaches once the bad guys have your credit card number and other personal information. To prevent this, be wary of any deal that sounds too good to be true, and do some digging on the websites that offer these mega-savings. • Watch for fake shipping notices. During the holidays, when you may do a lot of online shopping, you will probably receive some legitimate shipping notices. But the bad guys have gotten pretty good at generating fake notices designed to resemble those from UPS,

YOURSELF

FedEx and even the U.S. Postal Service. If you were to click on the link provided by one of these bogus notices, you could either take on some malware or get taken to a “phishing” website created by the shipping notice forgers. Your best defense: Only shop with legitimate merchants and only use the tracking numbers given to you in the email you received immediately after making your purchases. • Keep your Social Security number to yourself. As a general rule, don’t give out your Social Security number online—to anyone. No legitimate retailer needs this number.

If you’re recently retired or planning to retire, you’re probably concerned about making the right financial decisions. Together, we can find the answers. We’ll sit down, face to face, to develop a strategy designed to help your finances meet your needs over the long haul.

To develop a retirement income strategy that works for you, call or visit today.

Kevin R Callos, AAMS®

Finally, be aware that not all attempts at stealing your personal information will come online. When you’re out shopping at oldfashioned brick-and-mortar stores, consider bringing just one credit card with you—and protect that card from prying eyes.

Financial Advisor

6797 Eisenhower St Bonners Ferry, ID 83805 208.267.5664

By following these precautions, you should be able to greatly reduce the risk of being victimized by identity thieves and other miscreants. And the more comfortable you are in doing your holiday shopping, the more you can enjoy the season.

Christmas Tree of Joy. By Colin Anderson.

NO CHILD SHOULD FEEL the sting of a holiday season without a gift, and with continued help and generosity from the greater Bonners Ferry community, that goal is coming true. For years, the Care-NShare program has placed hundreds of gifts into the arms of children whose parents are limited on what they can provide. While the program continues to serve the community, there are more children in need, and that’s when Joy Schmitz of E.T Wireless stepped up to fill the void. “It was just the beginning of December three years ago, and I was very sad that children would be going without presents, so that was the birth of Christmas Tree of Joy. Our first year we reached about 40 children, and last year it grew to about 100,” explains Joy. A tree is set up at the E.T. Wireless store, located at 6665 Main in Downtown Bonners Ferry, and beginning December 5, tags will adorn the tree, each listing a gift a local child is hoping to receive this Christmas. Those who want to support the program can grab one tag—or as many as

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

15

they would like—in order to provide some needed cheer to local families in need. Joy is delighted “knowing that we are helping as many children have their Christmas blessed, and that as they grow up they will remember someone else helped them and pay if forward.” She adds: “As we near the end of the program’s time, the tree [will be] overflowing with gifts, which makes my heart overflow with thankfulness for our wonderful, giving community.” For more information on the Christmas Tree of Joy program, stop into E.T. Wireless during business hours or find additional information on Facebook. Whether it’s one present or a dozen, each donation helps bring even more joy to the community this Christmas.

MISS TEEN OF IDAHO Bonners Ferry’s Maya Roberts shines and shares her light. By Jillian Chandler.

SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD MAYA Roberts is making a name for herself here in Bonners Ferry, and across the state—while making a difference in the community and beyond. This intelligent, kind and compassionate young woman was recently crowned Miss Teen of Idaho this past July in Caldwell, Idaho, and she has been hard at work seeing her duties through. At the pageant, contestants were judged on academics, general awareness, on-stage questions, volunteer and service, interview, poise and personality. There were also additional areas to enter in, and last year, Maya placed first in both photogenic and creative writing for the Northwest region. “I would describe the entire experience as life changing,” says Maya. “You can do anything you put your mind to with work and determination. My experience with American Pageants has given me the strength to believe in my own abilities and strive to better myself, and take action to make a real change.“ Maya has nothing but positive things about being part of the pageant world. “I have gained a new pageant family all over the United States. We help each other, laugh and encourage one another toward success,” she says. “Being involved in pageantry has made me reach higher, increase confidence and provided PHOTOS BELOW BY AMY HENDERSON

"Being involved in pageantry has made me reach higher, increase confidence and provided leadership experience. … I am happy to shine a light on what it takes and what it means to be a pageant girl."

leadership experience. … I am happy to shine a light on what it takes and what it means to be a pageant girl.” As Miss Teen of Idaho, Maya is able to promote her platform—Say No To Bullying and Yes To Inclusion—across the state, create an inclusion event for Special Olympics, work with charities and attend a variety of positive public events. As of press time, Maya was preparing to compete at Nationals in Orlando, Florida, for the Miss Teen of America title. As a young woman, Maya has those women she admires and finds inspirational. “In the pageant world, I look up to Serena Zamarripa, current Miss Teen of America; Cara Mund, current Miss America; and Paige Jensen, former Miss Teen of Idaho/America. In general, I look up

to strong women like Olympia LePoint, Maya Angelou and Emma Watson to name a few,” Maya says. Throughout her pageant journey, Maya has had the support of many people, including her family and friends, who have encouraged her from different states and countries. “Everyone's support, prayers and positive wishes mean a lot to me,” she says. “Two of my biggest supporters are my grandparents. They have traveled and been there for all of my performances in theater, concerts for choir, state competitions in cheer and dance, and now they will be meeting me in Florida to cheer me on!” When it comes to what advice she would give to other young girls interested in participating in pageants, she says, “The biggest piece of advice that I can give to girls interested in pageantry is to be 100-percent authentic. When you are yourself, it's genuine and builds a good foundation, rather than pretending to be something you're not. Believe in yourself, and you will go far!” A senior at Bonners Ferry High School, Maya will be attending university next fall to study psychology, pursuing her doctorate with business and early childhood development as minors. Though college is her main focus, Maya plans to continue with American Pageants. “I love helping others, and pageantry presents numerous opportunities to make a meaningful difference,” she says. When not busy with academics and her duties as Miss Teen of Idaho, Maya spends her time playing with her little brother Kadyn, giggling with friends and volunteering. With the accomplishments this year has brought, Maya is truly grateful for the encouragement she has received from the local community: “I would like to thank Bonners Ferry for supporting me. I can't wait to make Idaho proud at Nationals and beyond.”

Beck’s Furniture Save BIG on Quality

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

JULIA COMMINGS:

JULIA CUMMINGS HAS A competitive nature, a trait that has served her well in academics and athletics. She is enrolled at Bonners Ferry High School and K12 virtual academy part time while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. “My goal is to graduate in the top 10 of my class,” said the Bonners Ferry sophomore. Julia began to swim competitively at the age of 8 when she lived in South Carolina. She swam for a club team for three years and placed eighth in the state at the age of 11. She took a break from swimming for a year when her family moved from South Carolina to Bonners Ferry, something that she said proved to be challenging. In August of 2016 she joined the Sandpoint swim team. “I swam for SWAC [Sandpoint West Athletic Club] throughout that season under Mike Brosnahan. When high school season for swimming began in September of 2017, I wanted to swim in high school somehow, whether that meant I swim for Sandpoint High School, be an unattached swimmer or swim for Bonners Ferry High School,” said Julia. “After a few board meetings, it was decided to make swimming a cooperative sport for BFHS, and that I would be the first swimmer for and to represent Bonners Ferry.” Throughout September and October, Julia traveled with the Sandpoint High School swim team to meets in Idaho, including districts and state. In early November she competed at state in Boise in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke. “With a personal best in both events [at prelims], I qualified for finals the next day,” said Julia. In the finals, she swam the same

two events and came in 10th in the state in 50-meter freestyle and second in the state for 3A girls. “In the 100 meter I placed 16th in the state and was first in state for 3A girls,” she said. Julia plans to attend Whitworth University and pursue a degree in nursing while swimming for Whitworth as well. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, exploring Bonners Ferry, being with her friends and family, hunting, ATV riding, photography, youth group and participating in other sports. “I enjoy doing these things because I get to do them in a beautiful town, and I get to enjoy them with the people I love most,” said Julia. She has had many memorable moments over the years while competing but said it is the meets she enjoys the most. “Going to swim meets is always a fun and enjoyable time, especially with a team,” said Julia. “I really enjoy the competition with swimming. Always having someone to beat in a race— or even trying to beat your own personal record—makes swimming very much enjoyable and a career I won't ever want to give up on.” Swimming has taught Julia more than just what it means to be part of a team. “A big life lesson that I have learned is to never give up on something you want or love,” she said. “Another is whatever you put in is what you’re going to get out of it. I was always taught by my coaches and parents to always give 100 percent, and everything requires effort and hard work.”

Get Outside! • By Alison Henslee hotos by Kale Semar, Jim Tucker P & courtesy of Pam Hittle

Snowmobiling is a more expensive winter sport, but there are a number of dedicated riders in Bonners Ferry.

GOT CABIN FEVER? BOUNDARY COUNTY IS SUCH a beautiful place, there’s hardly ever a bad time to be outside. And while some people think of winter as the season to hibernate in the house with a good book, many others see it as a prime opportunity to get out and enjoy activities that are only available during these chilly months. Winter sports are all excellent methods of exercise which range from beginner to expert levels and have price tags depending on how involved one wants to be (think yard sales and thrift stores for used equipment when trying out any new sport). With many wonderful hills, lakes and ponds around Bonners Ferry, sledding and ice skating are great ways to get outside with family and friends. Ice climbing and snowmobiling take people to harder-to-reach places while snowshoeing and cross-country skiing can be enjoyed in any snowy location. Local Zumba teacher, Pam Hittle, raves about her favorite winter sport—cross-country skiing. “I’m fairly new to it in the past five years and have wondered how I missed out on this all my life,” she says. “It’s great exercise

ICE CLIMBING IS A WINTER SPORT THAT’S gaining popularity. Local climber, Kale Semar, has been ice climbing in Boundary County for years; he finds local waterfalls beautiful any time, but when they freeze, they create amazing formations.

and a great time with family and friends.” Cross-country skiing is a full-body workout, burns calories and keeps one moving. “Being fit is very important to me, and I enjoy activities and sports that are active but without the thrills and risks that other people may enjoy. I prefer flat ground with a few rolling hills rather than steep mountain skiing, and cross-country skiing brings all of that as well as easy to just get out for a couple hours or go ski down county roads.” Pam started out with gear from a thrift store and then gradually upgraded as she became more experienced. She recommends dressing in light but warm layers to avoid sweating, which makes a person feel colder. Start with a nice base layer, then add a thin breathable but waterproof jacket and pants. Leg gators keep snow out of boots and gloves, and hand warmers are, in her opinion, the most important part to any ski trip. Since she’s a group exercise instructor, Pam usually has other skiers along. “My favorite part of cross-country skiing has been that it’s another adventurous sport I get to enjoy with my daughter-in-law and girlfriends,” she says. “We go almost every weekend in the winter.” Her favorite local spot is the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge. (The Refuge trails and the auto tour route are open to cross-country skiers; while grooming isn’t done as a general rule, they will use a snowmobile to pack down trails if the snow gets too deep.) After using groomed trails at Western Pleasures Guest Ranch and Schweitzer, Pam hopes for a local designated cross-country ski area someday with maintained trails so more people can enjoy the sport locally. Snowmobiling is a more expensive winter sport, but there are a number of dedicated riders in Bonners Ferry. Although the local snowmobile club hasn’t been active for several years, group riding is still common, often using social media to plan outings. Groomers from the Sandpoint snowmobile club come to Boundary County a few times a year, depending on snow levels, and open up miles of trails for riders. They typically groom trails up to Roman Nose Lake and in the Ruby Creek and Deer Creek areas. Local resident Jim Tucker should hold the title for most dedicated snowmobiler with 50 years of experience under his belt—and he plans to keep riding for another decade! When asked what fuels his passion for snowmobiling, he answers, “Deep snow and climbing.” Jim enjoys “boon-docking” (traveling cross country) as long as there’s a nice bowl to explore along the way. His favorite trail is Deer Creek to the top of Canuck Basin, an area with plenty of room to ride accompanied by great views. Jim also maintains that riding a snowmobile is good exercise; from steering through deep powder to shoveling out a stuck machine. In his opinion, “If you’re not getting stuck, there’s not enough snow!” There’s plenty of body movement, and even the act of staying warm helps burn calories. During adequate winters, Jim aims to ride at least two days per week.

Ice climbing is a winter sport that’s gaining popularity. Local climber, Kale Semar, has been ice climbing in Boundary County for years; he finds local waterfalls beautiful any time, but when they freeze, they create amazing formations. “Even small water seeps, which are not significant most of the year, can turn into spectacular formations,” Kale shares. His favorite part of the sport? “Climbing allows you to focus on the moment, the beauty and the movement rather than the scattered hectic-ness of everyday life.” Kale got into ice climbing as a way to train

for alpine climbing in the mountains and finds many of the local ice climbs to be rewarding in their own right. And just like any other winter sport, weather has an impact. Most winters though, Copper Creek Falls forms into a fun ice climb. Sunshine Bartlett got into the sport when she started dating Kale. “I enjoyed climbing in the summer at local rocks and was curious to try ice,” she says. “I have always enjoyed the vertical dance of rock climbing. Ice had another aspect that I had not experienced." While rock climbing involves using one’s hands and feet, ice climbing is

done by wearing crampons on boots and swinging ice tools to gain altitude. “The first time I went climbing with Kale, I expected to be cold, wet and miserable,” Sunshine says. “The ice itself is beautiful. I was so focused on the fun and the beauty, I forgot to be cold!” Another winter sport fan, Paul Bonnell has climbed with Kale, Sunshine and other local climbers and shares this: “Sometimes, swinging the ice tools, or laughing at the absurd simplicity of climbing up and coming back down, or packing the gear through the snow only to be turned back by unfavorable conditions … I just have to smile at how happy I am to be there, with friends, moving through the mountains in winter.” For anyone interested in moving through the outdoors in winter, Facebook is a great way to get involved in different activities or share an event so more people can participate. B-Town Heroes is a Facebook page created by outdoor enthusiast, Levi Bennett, as a way to encourage folks to get outside and share photos of their outings. Winter sports fans of any level are encouraged to join the B-Town Heroes page and use it to invite people out to play in the great North Idaho outdoors. So put down that book, put on some warm clothes and go try something new this winter. Just remember: Be safe, and don’t forget to share those spectacular pictures!

A PERFECT MATCH Program helps match volunteers with nonprofits By Patty Hutchens “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” - William Shakespeare WITH DAILY LIVES FILLED balancing work and family, it is inspiring to know that people in Idaho can still find time to give to others. In fact, in 2014, Idaho was ranked No. 2 in the country in volunteerism, with 35.8 percent of its residents logging 51 million hours of service in one year. One of the keys to finding an effective and enthusiastic volunteer is to match someone with opportunities that best utilize his or her talents. And if you are involved in any of the several hundred nonprofit groups in Boundary and Bonner counties, you know finding volunteers is never an easy task. Fortunately, Volunteer Idaho Panhandle Coordinator Elise Boyce has successfully matched volunteers with the needs of numerous nonprofit groups over the last several months.

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

22

“Sandpoint Community Resource Center works to bridge the gap with needs of the community with service providers,” said Boyce. “One way to further meet the needs is to fill the gap and connect volunteers with the needs [of the nonprofits].” The mission behind Volunteer Idaho Panhandle is to have one central place where volunteers can go to get connected with volunteer opportunities. The Volunteer Idaho Panhandle project features training and registering organizations and volunteers on VolunteerUnited.org, a website that utilizes a matching tool for volunteers and nonprofits. The project also has a marketing campaign to help promote volunteerism is both Boundary and Bonner counties, provides monthly Volunteer Idaho Panhandle orientations, volunteer management training, tracking and reporting on local volunteer activities, and they also host an annual volunteer fair in both Bonner and Boundary counties. The online matching tool is run by the United Way and Serve

Idaho and can be accessed by logging onto VolunteerUnited.org. But that is just one way to connect volunteers with organizations. “We can also meet face-to-face with people who would like to volunteer, and we hold monthly ‘mini fairs’ to help volunteers find their perfect match,” said Boyce, who adds that she also works closely with realtors who can assist some of their clients who are moving to the area get plugged into opportunities where they can connect with others. The impact of engaged volunteers in the community cannot be understated. When working with various nonprofits, Boyce said she emphasizes that it is important to find a variety of people to volunteer in each organization so everyone can utilize his or her own talents. “Also, each organization should have a volunteer coordinator,” said Boyce of maximizing the benefits of having people give of their time and talent. “A lot of organizations experience volunteer burnout, therefore, make sure the volunteer is a good fit and clarify their role.” The online matching tool in the two northern counties has already had 2,000 views in the six months it has been up and running, and Boyce hopes that is just the beginning. She has filled her days with attending events, meeting one-on-one with organizations and enthusiastically welcomes any opportunity she has to help spread the word. According to Boyce, Sandpoint Community Resource Center has found there are three major gaps when it comes to meeting the needs of the community. Those gaps are transportation, housing and financial challenges. “The needs are great, and finding the volunteers can be challenging,” she said. Boyce shares that her role is fulfilling and she appreciates the support she has received from the community. She took on this task of working on Volunteer Idaho Panhandle for a period of one year as a member of AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service To America), a program that originated with an idea from President John F. Kennedy and was officially formed in 1965. With a minimal salary, AmeriCorps VISTA members serve for one year and help to build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level and empower individuals and communities.

The mission behind Volunteer Idaho Panhandle is to have one central place where volunteers can go to get connected with volunteer opportunities.

Erin Binnall is the community engagement specialist and foundation coordinator for Bonner General Health and is a member of Volunteer Idaho Panhandle’s advisory board. “Volunteering can provide both physical and mental rewards to individuals. It allows new and old community members an opportunity to get to know the valuable resources we have here in Sandpoint,” said Binnall. “Volunteer Idaho Panhandle is a great way for volunteers to be matched with volunteer opportunities. Many times, some of us want to volunteer, but we are just not sure where to begin or do not want to be sucked into long-term commitments. VolunteerUnited.org can give individuals, families, groups of friends interested in giving back, dates and community events that may meet their needs and wants in both short-term and long-term. I believe volunteering is a healthy and fun way to strengthen our community.” She said her role as an advisory board member has been to support the efforts of the project through community awareness and volunteering. “We met weekly in the beginning supporting Elise and Becca [Orchard with Sandpoint Community Resource Center] with brainstorming, branding, marketing and more.” VolunteerUnited is not just touching people in North Idaho. There are people working throughout the entire state, and the results have been amazing.

Health & Lifestyle QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Does Your Fitness Make You Fit? By Susan Moore

IT’S NOVEMBER, AND THE YEAR IS coming to an end. Within two months we celebrate—and indulge—with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is when Americans gain the most weight, which they plan on taking off once the new year hits. Every year millions of people make getting in shape their New Year’s resolution. It’s the “I’ll start Monday” mentality that we battle the rest of the year but on a much larger scale. But what exactly does getting in shape mean to us? What is our motivation? What are our goals exactly? Asking the “why” is probably the most important question to think through in order to optimize success. Learning the “how” to facilitate the “why” and subsequently devising a

productive plan could turn this year’s resolution into next year’s reason to be thankful. It’s actually easier than you could have ever imagined. First you need to write down your goals and how you think you can accomplish them. Spend some time researching people who have done what you plan to do and how they did it. What were their struggles? One of the most crucial things to consider is safety. You need to make sure that the exercises you decide on are not inherently dangerous. Are you going to be using a video, going to a class, hiring a trainer or even buying a piece of equipment? Do your due diligence. I don’t typically

Alpine Family

Medicine Sandpoint’s Newest Hometown Family Medical Clinic Look for training that makes you feel better versus worse. recommend any videos that have strength training exercises in them like push-ups, pull-ups, lunges or squats. If you haven’t been exercising regularly, chances are your body needs a refresher on the proper mobility, flexibility, strength and reflexes to do these movements under qualified guidance.

If professional guidance is absolutely off the table, video yourself doing the movements and watch the videos. If anything about the movements doesn’t look right, it isn’t. We were all born with the ability to know what right/wrong looks and feels like, but unfortunately we all have to sit for long periods of time in our society, so we tend to lose the ability to know what right/wrong feels like. Thankfully we never lose the ability to know what right/wrong looks like. If when you watch the video and it doesn’t look like the movement you were trying to do, do some more research and continue to work on these movements like you would when learning any new skill. This is the skill of strength. Keep videoing and keep refining. You should eventually learn how to do the movements correctly and in the process get stronger, healthier and burn some calories. If you feel like you would have more success in a group setting (my personal favorite) or want to join a class, make sure the instructor is a subject matter expert in what they are teaching. If you don’t feel comfortable

BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com

28

asking for their qualifications, Google is a beautiful thing, and you can usually get all the information about your instructor you are looking for. I’m pretty good with instructing TRX, and if you go to their website you’ll find that I can back that up with the amount of education I have in it. Most instructors don’t know what they don’t know, and just because they look fit doesn’t mean they know how to instruct, correct, modify or when to refer people to a medical professional. I teach a lot of professional education around the country to health and fitness practitioners, and approximately 80 percent don’t know how to properly teach or even do a squat themselves. The main reasons people don’t stay motivated is they lack direction or get injured. If you are in a class, make sure quality of movement is more important than quantity. The only thing a lot of bad movements will get you is an eventual injury. You should feel like you are ready to take over the world most days after training, not like you need a nap. Look for training that makes you feel better versus worse. There seems to be a surge of fitness masochism where a training session isn’t good unless you get annihilated. Remember, adaptation is what a training protocol should provide, not just fatigue. Anyone can make you tired, but can they make you stronger? If you are bargain shopping for fitness instruction, you will get what you pay for. The more education your trainer/instructor invests in, the more they are investing in your success. Set a goal, ask questions, get moving and enjoy every second of it!!

And when it comes to snow, you are either a phobe, euphore or a phile. A chionophobe is someone who doesn’t like snow and avoids it. Chioneuphores tolerate snow and chionophiles look forward to, and enjoy, snow and the winter months. As the days get shorter and nights get longer, fight the urge to hibernate. Instead of enduring the cold temperatures and snow by staying indoors wrapped in a cocoon of blankets, spread your winter wings and make the most of the nivean (snow) environment. Now is the time to ditch that bikini and break out the snowshoes!

about in the winter was critical for our ancestors’ survival. However, with our relatively small feet and big bodies, traveling in snow was a substantial challenge. At some point, probably when post-holing through thigh-deep snow, our human ancestors may have observed a snowshoe hare (or other big-footed chionophile) moving effortlessly across the top of the snow thanks to its big feet. Well, we humans may not have big feet, but we do have a big, creative brain; a brain that recognized the benefits of big feet and translated that knowledge into simple yet efficient devices that imitated the bunny’s big feet—snowshoes.

A few thousand years ago, being able to travel and move

SNOWSHOEING AS A WINTER ACTIVITY HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY POPULAR, AND WHY NOT? IT’S EASY AND INEXPENSIVE, AND THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN PARTICIPATE.

evolved into a few functional shapes and sizes, which were influenced by location, type of use and snow conditions. Initially, skis were called long snowshoes and snowshoes were called raquettes by French Canadians, because of their similarity to tennis rackets, and webs by Europeans who recently arrived in America. But, by the early 1900s, raquettes and webs became snowshoes, and long snowshoes were known as skis. Snowshoes were indispensable winter survival gear for Native Americans, trappers and explorers but were also used for winter sports. In the mid-1800s, several snowshoe clubs on the eastern side of Canada conducted racing competitions. Recreational snowshoeing was born. Snowshoeing as a winter activity has become increasingly popular, and why not? It’s easy

and inexpensive, and the whole family can participate. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Aluminum frames and neoprene decking make moderns snowshoes lightweight and maneuverable. Also, bindings have improved. Rotating-toe cord bindings allow the tail of the snowshoe to drag instead of being lifted, which requires less energy. The fixed-toe cord binding allows the whole shoe to be lifted, which makes it easier to step over obstacles or run on packed trails, but requires more energy. Crampons can be added for extra traction and stability; however, if you are moving through downfall, you may want to remove them because they easily catch on wood and can trip you up. Insulated boots that support your ankles and hiking poles provide additional stability. The increased popularity of snowshoeing has seen recreational programs pop up everywhere in snow country. programs, colleges, ski resorts and park facilities offer workshops, demonstrations, clinics and races. Some national parks and ski resorts loan out snowshoes for day use. State Park and Recreation agencies have designated snow-park locations (large parking lots kept clear of snow) for winter recreationalists. Some snow parks have groomed trails dispersing from the parking lot and are typically intended for cross-county skiers and snowmobilers. However, with the continued popularity of snowshoeing, trails nowadays often have a designated side for the shoeing crowd. Snow conditions dictate the style and size of snowshoe best suited for the day’s travel. That fluffy white stuff isn’t always fluffy; the snowpack has different densities. If you are venturing out on dense, compact snow, a smaller snowshoe is adequate. In some instances, if you are smaller and don’t weigh a

lot, you can walk without snowshoes on top of this type of snow. However, if you are looking to trek through some champagne powder, that beautiful light, fluffy stuff, you will need to go with a bigger snowshoe. Even with a larger snowshoe you will still sink a few inches, and breaking trail in powder is quite a workout. Go with a few friends so you can switch off trailbraking duty. Most dogs enjoy the snow, and snowshoeing is a great activity for many fur-faces. My furry four-legged companions love the snow. However, they usually are not allowed on groomed trails. No matter, they will gladly follow you as you break trail on any snowshoe adventure. They figure out very quickly that it is easier to bring up the rear while you do all the hard work. Once the trail is established, they will happily run ahead investigating the nivean environment. Dogs are quick to pick up the scent of any wild critter that has crossed your path. If you are out and about after new, sparkling snow has settled, usually 24 to 48 hours, you are likely to see a variety of animal tracks. I spent years snow-tracking

on various wildlife research projects and still enjoy spotting and trailing tracks to identify what kind of chionophile was out and what they were doing. If you do have your pups with you while exploring the nivean environment, keep in mind, particularly if you are on public land, winter is when trappers are out setting their trap lines. Watch for boot tracks or snowshoe trails. Pay attention to your dog’s behavior, especially when they pick up an unusual scent. Different attractants are used—sometimes a can of sardines, sometimes a lure that smells like skunk. If you notice other human tracks, smell skunk or see your dog overly focused on a specific spot, rein them in and move on because there is likely a trap or traps set in the area. There are numerous guide books that describe routes (some are summer hiking trails), from easy to extreme, and give advice for trekking during the winter. On the other hand, you may want to go it on your own and enjoy the freedom of making your own path. Keep in

mind that landmarks look different in the winter, so having some navigation savvy is wise. Additionally, if you are following tracks made by some other adventurer, you should have a good sense of where the tracks lead—the route may be an avalanche hotspot that you should avoid, or you may be following someone with more extreme genes than yourself. Always take plenty of food and water. Most importantly, always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back—cell phones don’t always have reception in the backcountry. Safety first! Still resisting breaking out of your cocoon and committing to living the life of a chionophile? Here’s some additional incentive; you can burn about 450 calories per hour while snowshoeing! A lot more if you are breaking trail in powder. Snowshoeing will keep you trim and fit throughout the winter and come spring, when the sun is shining warm and bright, you can confidently don that bikini that has been hibernating since last fall.

Q&A with the Shook Twins Concert Friday, November 24, 2017, 7:30pm, The Pearl

WE LOVED YOUR SHOW LAST YEAR AT THE PEARL. WE KNOW THAT YOU HAVE A HUGE FOLLOWING. WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO KEEP COMING BACK TO THE PEARL? We really like playing The Pearl. It's so intimate and special. We like that a lot of the people know us from the little blond twins with mullets that used to be in the Badger Den. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING SINCE THE LAST TIME YOU VISITED US, AND WHO ARE YOU BRINGING TO PLAY WITH YOU? We have been touring around the country just doing what we do. We've been recording a lot as well and releasing some new music into the world. It's tiring and tedious at times, but it's shows like these home court ones that make it all worth it. John Craigie will open the show, and we'll have Niko Slice and Josh Simon, and Justin Landis as well. We are so lucky to get to play with these fine fellas.

HIGHLIGHT EVENT

YOUR SHOW IS CALLED “GIVING THANKS,” AND WE AS A COMMUNITY APPRECIATE ALL THAT YOU GIVE TO US EVERY YEAR. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’RE GIVING THANKS FOR THIS SEASON? We always give thanks for our family—our village that surrounds us here in North Idaho. Every Thanksgiving we have a big family dinner with all our extended family friends. … We are incredibly lucky, and we are who and where we are today because of all the wonderfully supportive people in our lives. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE FOR OUR AUDIENCES TO KNOW ABOUT YOU OR THE PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE YOU? We still can't believe that this is our job—making and playing our songs for wonderful people! It’s better than any job we can imagine. Music does so much for people, and it's so important. We are lucky to be a part of that and strive to make music that can make a positive difference somehow.
